HOME FIRE RISKS INCREASE AS WEATHER COOLS (NAPSI)—The fall and winter seasons bring cooler temperatures, holidays, and images of cozy nights by the fireplace. Yet the change in seasons also comes with the chance of severe weather and an increase in fire risks. According to the U.S. Fire Administration, more home fires occur in winter than in any other season. “Holiday decorations, space heaters, generators, and fireplaces all present fire hazards if not properly used and maintained,” said Steve Hirsch, chair of the National Volunteer Fire Council. “Residents should be aware of the dangers and take the steps to make sure their families and homes are protected.” Follow these tips to minimize home fire and safety risks: • Install smoke alarms in every sleeping room, outside each separate sleeping area, and on every level of the home. Test monthly to ensure they work. • Install carbon monoxide alarms and test them at least once a month. • Know where the gas, electric, and water main shut-off controls are and how to use them. • Place fire extinguishers in the kitchen, garage, and living room, and make sure all household members know how to use them. • Develop a home fire escape plan and practice it with the entire family. • Keep portable generators outside and away from the home. • Install a screen in front of each fireplace or wood stove. Store cooled ashes in a metal container outside the home. • Have chimneys professionally inspected and cleaned every year. • Keep anything that can burn at least three feet away from fireplaces, radiators, space heaters, or other heat source. • Never leave lit candles unattended, and keep them out of the reach of children and pets. • If using a live Christmas tree, keep it adequately watered and get rid of it after Christmas or when it gets dry. Residents can also take an active role in protecting their communities from hazards such as fires, medical emergencies, and much more. Fire departments across the country are looking for volunteers to serve as firefighters, EMS providers, and auxiliary members. “The majority of firefighters in the U.S. are volunteers—neighbors helping neighbors in an incredible and rewarding way,” said Hirsch. “We need more people to answer the call to serve.” Training is provided by the department, and volunteers can serve in a variety of roles, from providing life-saving emergency response services to conducting fire prevention programs and disaster preparedness planning. Older properties tend to have a sense of charm that new ly built homes may lack. Perhaps it’s their lived-in feel or design elements that remind homeow ners of yesteryear that make older homes so popular among home buyers. W hat older homes have in character they may lack in modern amenities. For example, w hereas many homes are now built w ith energy efficiency in mind, older homes may not be so eco-friendly. Fortunately, there are many w ays for homeow ners w ho love their older homes to keep that love going strong w hile making their homes more energy efficient at the same time.

LAWN & LANDSCAPING REMEDY LANDSCAPE DRAINAGE PROBLEMS When confronted with drainage issues that cannot be remedied by other methods, homeowners may need to install drainage systems. Such systems often employ French drains that are built through or around the perimeter of a property. French drains are typically a trench that contains perforated plastic pipe and is backfilled with gravel. Water runs into these channels and gets swept away by the piping. Do-it-yourselfers may want to try installing drainage systems themselves. However, because excavation is necessary, it’s often best to have the property inspected and marked for utilities, then have the drainage system installed by professionals.

MAKE THE HOLIDAY SEASON MORE MERRY EQUAL HOUSING OPPORTUNITY

If weather permits, go sledding, build a snowman or have a snowball fight.

NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Candles will burn more evenly if you refrigerate them for a few hours before lighting. * “I have drafty windows. I took a plastic shower curtain and cut it to fit the windows. Then I secured it with tape. It’s worked well to keep out the drafts, and I just remove it once a week and clean the windows with vinegar to discourage any mold from growing. It will work until next spring, anyway.” -- P.S. in Michigan * There is a reason that most refrigerators have more than one crisper drawer. Some items need to be stored separately. For example, keep apples and carrots in different compartments. The apples give off a gas that can give the carrots a bitter taste. * A great tip from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals: During the winter, outdoor cats sometimes sleep under the hoods of cars. They can be injured or even killed by the starting of the motor. Before you start your car in the morning (or any time of day, really) give your hood a nice loud rap to give the cat a chance to escape. * “To keep melting snow, mud and leaves out of your house and off of your floors, line a wide, shallow box bottom with plastic wrap or a kitchen-size garbage bag. Place the lined box near the front door to hold dirty shoes.” -- R.I. in Ohio * Mix some salt with a little bit of water and rub the mixture over your hands for a few minutes to get rid of the smell of garlic or onions from cooking. Rinse under cold water.” -- J.J. in Nevada

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My state has stopped its reopening plan and stepped back to phase 2, which limits business hours, puts a curfew back in place, and essentially puts us into lockdown again. My dog “Custer” is supposed to visit the vet every six months due to a chronic condition, but we haven’t gone all year because I don’t know if it’s safe or if lockdown rules apply. Should I just hold off on Custer’s visits until next year? -- Taylor C., Brockton, Massachusetts DEAR TAYLOR: Give the veterinarian a call today, because he or she will have the best, most up-to-date guidance on opening and operating as this pandemic continues. The situation with business openings and lockdowns is very fluid right now, and rules are different from state to state and even between cities. When the first lockdown rules began to ease, back in June, the guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to veterinary offices was to prioritize emergency and urgent visits first, followed by routine visits. Some states explicitly designated veterinary practice as an essential service, allowing them to remain open even during strict lockdown phases. Custer’s veterinarian will be able to tell you when the next routine appointment is available. Scheduling may be tight, not because there are many urgent cases ahead of you, but because the practice is limited to a certain number of visitors in the building at one time. Keeping up with Custer’s visits is very important. I am almost certain that the vet will want to see Custer soon, and will probably make his visit a priority because of his ongoing health issue. WINTERTIME CAN BE ‘SNOW’ MUCH FUN TO DISCOVER Winter storms are on the way. While many people are anxious to see landscapes covered in white, others already are counting down the days to spring blooms. Weather can be awe-inspiring and interesting, and learning the secrets about snow is no exception. Snow forms when water vapor in the atmosphere freezes into ice crystals. Snow falls as snowflakes, which come in a variety of shapes. However, according to Mental Floss, snow also can precipitate as graupel or sleet. Graupel are pellets of opaque ice particles that fall through freezing cloud droplets. They are not the same as sleet, which are drops of rain that freeze into small, translucent balls of ice. Snowflakes are generally small and accumulate to form visible snow coverings. However, snowflakes can be large. The largest snowflake on record was reported to be 15 inches across and eight inches thick. According to “The Guinness Book of World Records,” this giant snowflake was discovered at Fort Keogh, Montana, on January 28, 1887. Although it appears white, snow is actually clear and colorless. The National Snow and Ice Data Center says the complex structure and many facets of snow crystals results in visible light being reflected. Light is absorbed uniformly over the wavelengths of visible light, which gives snow its white appearance. Even though snow is more common in northern elevations and cold regions, snowfall is not exclusive to frigid climates. In the United States, snow has fallen in cities most often associated with sun and warmth, such as San Diego, Miami and Hawaii. The southern Italy town of Capracotta received 100 inches of snow in 18 hours on March 5, 2015. In spite of its location, Capracotta has been known to receive enormous one-day snowfalls. While snow can fall even in warm climates, the world record holder for the most snow belongs to a northern area. Mt. Baker ski resort in Washington state experienced 1,140 inches in the 1998/1999 winter season. Snow can fall at temperatures well above freezing. According to ScienceBits.com, snow can still fall at temperatures as warm as 46 F. For snow to fall when temperatures are warm, humidity has to be very low. Even though there’s a common perception that no two snowflakes are alike, this isn’t completely accurate. A scientist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research found two identical snow crystals in 1988. Also, similar results have been produced in laboratories. Snow is an interesting form of precipitation. It can be scarce or plentiful, and may feature tiny snowflakes or extremely large ones. Snow also may take on the color of its surrounding environment. THE HISTORY OF HOLIDAY LIGHTS Thomas Edison, the inventor of the first successful practical light bulb, also created the first strand of electric lights that would be used in holiday decorating. By 1880, Edison had standard incandescent light bulbs well sorted out and desired a way to better advertise his invention, so he decided to make the most of the holiday season and put his light bulbs on display. According to a 2003 article in American Heritage magazine titled “The Wizard of Your Christmas Tree,” Edison strung incandescent bulbs all around the compound of his Menlo Park, NJ, laboratory. Edison constructed an eight-mile underground wiring system in order to power this grand light display. Because the laboratory was situated along the railroad that passed between Manhattan and Philadelphia, thousands of people were able to see the display. The concept of electric holiday lights took a bit of time to catch on. Edison’s friend and associate Edward Johnson was tasked with stringing together colored lights in 1882 and placing them on an evergreen tree. Johnson hand-wired 80 red, white and blue light bulbs. In 1895, President Grover Cleveland requested the White House family Christmas tree be illuminated by multi-colored electric light bulbs. In 1903, when General Electric began to offer pre-assembled kits of holiday lights, stringed lights were reserved for the wealthy and electrically savvy. For example, in 1903 a single string of electric lights cost $12, or around $300 today. It would take several more years before holiday lights became a national tradition. On Christmas Eve 1923, President Calvin Coolidge began the country’s celebration of Christmas by lighting the National Christmas Tree on the Ellipse located south of the White House with 3,000 electric lights. Today, illuminated strands of lights have become a large part of holiday celebrations and have even been adopted for use during various year-round events. Such lights can be a beautiful and festive addition to many celebrations.

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles

Make Getting Fit Your Yearlong Goal Where do you want your fitness level to be a year from now? To get to that point, we need to take the first step. For most of us, that’s going to mean exercising at home. Here are some resources: Sit and Be Fit (www.sitandbefit.org) can be found on your PBS station (if it’s not, call the station and ask for it) and on the internet on YouTube. All Sit and Be Fit exercises are done sitting in a chair. SilverSneakers (silversneakers.com), sometimes covered by Medicare plans, holds classes in gyms across the country, but at this point few people are going to gyms. Do a location search and find a facility near you. Ask whether they have video or online classes and see whether your Medicare plan covers it. Look for “Growing Stronger,” the free 126-page strength-training book for seniors, on the website cdc.gov. Follow the suggested timeline, starting with reading the book and setting goals. Leave a message for your doctor and ask if it’s OK for you to start this or any program, especially if you have heart, bone or blood pressure conditions. Remember what being physically fit can do for us: reduce our risk of falls, maintain independence, build strength and keep bones strong. That’s a goal worth striving for. Doing so can provide the motivation you need and partners can serve as safety nets should you need assistance completing an exercise or suffer an injury and require medical attention. Personal trainers can serve as your partner, and many gyms offer discounts to seniors on personal training services.

Discover The Human Touch In Hearing Technology

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Learn Right Way to Use a Cane ---

Lakeville 3513 Thomas Dr., Suite 2 Henrietta

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have Parkinson’s disease, and balance

20 Finn Road, Suite C

is an issue. I have been using a cane on the right side, my weak leg side. I have seen videos that say a cane should be used on a person’s uninjured side. I tilt to the right and catch my balance without cane support in most cases. Which side do you suggest I use for better and faster movement? -- J.C.A. ANSWER: A cane is normally used on the “good” side, the side opposite of the one that needs support. However, I refer every patient with a cane to a physical or occupational therapist, since the cane should be the proper type, the proper height and used in the correct hand. Also, people need to be instructed on how to use it properly. Up to 70% of people with canes don’t use them properly, and as such won’t get the help they could be getting. Almost half of people will abandon them. A skilled therapist can help you get the most benefit from the cane. I have read that canes with built-in laser lights can be particularly helpful for people with Parkinson’s. This might be something to look into as well. These are valuable for people with “freezing” of gait.

Caring for you and the community since 2001.

DEAR DR. ROACH: You put my life into disarray as I read your column on the risk of recurrence with respect to breast cancer! I promptly grabbed my retired pathologist husband, and he was floored also. He accessed respected medical sites online, and we cannot find any stating that “women with estrogen receptor positive, progesterone receptor positive and HER2 negative tumors are more likely to experience recurrence.” What research are you looking at? I was told by my breast surgeon, oncologist and radiologist that I am in the best possible position with breast cancer. If this is an actual error, you’ll have a whole nation of readers and breast cancer survivors in an anxious state and the phones of providers ringing off the hook! Please tell me that this was a misprint. -- T.W. ANSWER: It is not a misprint. The issue is that risk factors for late recurrences are different from overall prognostic findings. Because fortunately late recurrences are relatively rare, they don’t have a major effect on overall prognosis, which is where I think you and your husband may be looking. Specifically, triple-negative tumors (ER negative, PR negative, HER-2 negative) have a worse overall prognosis, but survivors have a low risk of recurrence if they get through the first five years. I am putting some of the original research onto my page at facebook.com/keithroachmd1. I must note that there are more sophisticated genetic markers that can help predict recurrence. My column lacks space to go into those, but your oncologist can speak to you about them. I am sorry your life is in disarray. I don’t mean to increase your anxiety. Perhaps it would help if I noted that according to one of the studies I am posting, recurrence rate in the 20 years after diagnosis is only 1.4% per year for ER+ women with no lymph nodes positive for cancer. ***

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2020 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

We Care About

Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy

DEALING WITH A DENTAL DISASTER Dental disasters do not always occur at a time when you can immediately get to the dentist. Chipping or breaking a tooth can be painful, but it can also create other problems if not dealt with quickly. A broken or chipped tooth should be rinsed with warm water, and any bleeding can be stopped with pressure. If the break or chip is very jagged, dental wax can be used to cover the tooth to avoid cutting the inside of your mouth and tongue. Deep cracks can go all the way down to the roots and cause severe pain, but smaller cracks may be painless and invisible. They should still be seen by a dentist, although they may not require treatment.

At BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, we dedicate ourselves to keeping our patients out of the dental chair with our focus on education and prevention. We provide the highest quality oral care services so that you’ll spend less time in treatment and more time enjoying your healthy smile. We offer complete general dental care including repair of damage caused by trauma or neglect, periodic cleanings, cosmetic dentistry, and full mouth reconstruction. Please call for an appointment at 6 Batavia City Centre, 585.343.4246.

P.S. While the temporary tooth repair kits available in most pharmacies should never be used as an excuse to put off dental care, they can be very handy to have around for quick fixes if you need a day or two to get to the dentist.

Wheatland-Chili Girls Soccer Coach Gary Ward to Retire BY AMANDA DUDEK

A

fter 550 wins, three State Championships, nine Section V Titles, and hundreds of lives impacted, Coach Gary Ward is hanging up the clipboard for good. For the last 39 years, Ward has coached the Girls soccer team at Wheatland-Chili, guiding the Wildcats to incredible heights and sustained success. Now, as he prepares to retire, he has an opportunity to reflect on his career and how far the game has come. A Changed Landscape When he first started coaching the varsity team in 1982, he was only the 2nd Girls Soccer coach at Wheatland-Chili. Six years had passed since Title IX ensured equal access to opportunities for female athletes, but legal access didn’t always translate immediately to tangible access. “The early kids were real pioneers and they took some risks,” Ward says. “We had to fight for field time, we had to fight for equal facilities and participation... They knew how lucky they were to be playing.” Over the years, the Girls Soccer program improved dramatically. With increased access to fields and facilities, improved training methods, and consistent offseason playing time, the game became much more competitive. Through his coaching career, Ward was continuously impressed by the increased strength, speed, and skills of the female athletes. The 2020 team is as resilient as any Ward has seen in his 39 years, due to the challenges resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. Like every other facet of society, the pandemic has kept people from gathering in groups, so the team has had few opportunities to train, practice, and even bond together as a team. Injuries took a toll this season, and despite requirements that players must wear masks during practices and games, Ward says proudly that “our kids have been great. They haven’t complained. We made it clear what the mask rule is and they didn’t bat an eye. I couldn’t say more about them.” Looking Back When asked to pick just one moment out of his celebrated career that stands out, Ward struggled. “There were so many highlights, and so many great kids,” he said. “I guess one of the most exciting moments would have to be the 2017 State Championship,” which the Wildcats won on a Golden Goal after double-overtime. He also pointed to the other two State Championships in 1991 and 2016 as well.

Wheatland-Chili Girls Soccer Coach Gary Ward at the 2016 New York State Championship

Despite his record of success, Ward makes very clear that winning isn’t everything. His coaching philosophy is actually quite simple: “I never set out to worry about winning. We try to teach them how to play and approach the game properly. What we say is ‘Go out and give it your best, play the way you’ve been taught, and at the end of the day we’ll look at the scoreboard to see who won.’ We try to take the pressure off the kids. We want to teach them to compete in a healthy way.” He emphasized that he never saw himself as solely a soccer coach, either. “To me, coaching is teaching. We’re trying to use [soccer] as a vehicle to help our kids grow and be good people.” His players saw that principle firsthand. Abby Jones played for Ward from 1988-1991 and led the team to a New York State Championship Title in 1991. “He was always so positive, guiding everyone, and brought out the best in us,” Jones said. “The lessons he taught on the field were so

relevant in life. He improved your game, certainly, but he also improved your life.” “He was very compassionate and caring for his players, above and beyond coaching on the field,” recalled Jill Farrell, former player in the 1980s and a current kindergarten teacher at T.J. Connor Elementary School. “A lot of us had him as a teacher too and he wanted to make sure we were doing well in our studies. He was always really supportive.” This season, Ward coached Farrell’s daughter – not the first time he has coached a second generation player. “It was cool to see it come “There were full circle,” Farrell said. “I’m glad that they had that opportunity to so many play together.” She humorously highlights, recalled how earlier this year, her daughter came home after the and so many practice in which Coach Ward great kids!” finally referred to her by her mother’s name. “He finally did it! - Coach Gary Ward He called me Jill!” her daughter had laughed. The impact he has had on players, parents, and the community is unmatched. He has stayed close with countless individuals over the years. For Jones, when she lost family members, Coach Ward was right there, attending the funeral, still serving as a shoulder to lean on. “I hope he knows how many people love him and cherish him.” Highlight of a Lifetime After nearly four decades, Ward is stepping away from the sport that has come to define his career. He’s looking forward to spending time with his wife, JoAnn, and hopefully getting back to showing his horses. He plans to continue attending Wheatland-Chili soccer games as a spectator. “I hope I get a free pass,” he joked to Todd Grimes, the Wheatland-Chili Athletic Director. “We’ve got some great young kids on the team that I think are going to be great players.” Why now? Ward says that after 39 years of coaching and 50 years of teaching, it’s time. He’s had a great career, and as much as he’ll miss it, sometimes you have to move on. But when he reflects on his coaching career, he doesn’t hesitate. “This has been one of the highlights of my life. Man, it was a ride.” Enjoy this article? Thank you, Production! A huge shoutout to our Production Team here at Genesee Valley Penny Saver and Penny Lane Printing! Each week, they are responsible for thousands and thousands of Penny Savers getting printed, saddle-stitched, inserted, and ready for delivery. Our crew is essential and has been way before the term “essential” was used to define the need for a business to stay open. They love what they do in bringing our readers one of the most well-read community papers in America! - Steve Harrison, Publisher Thank you, Tops Pharmacy! It is so comforting to know that

you have pharmacists who are concerned about you. Everyone works so hard trying to take care of all our needs. Today, when I went to Top’s pharmacy, Michelle made it a point to greet me, even though she was not on the front line. As we chatted about the coronavirus and the vaccine, she assured me that they would take good care of me. How nice is that? Aubree is also very nice each and every time I am there. Thanks for all the hard work that you do for us as customers. The team at Top’s Pharmacy in Hamlin is the best.

Throughout life people w ill make you mad, disrespect you and treat you bad. Let God deal w ith the things they do, cause hate in your heart w ill consume you too. - W ill Smith

“Goodwill is earned by many acts; it can be lost by one…”

~ Duncan Stuart Goodwill is priceless. It can exist between individuals, such as neighbors and friends. A company needs the goodwill of those with whom the company does business. When goodwill exists, each party regards the other in a friendly way. Every action is assumed to be motivated by good intentions. Goodwill is built gradually by a long series of transactions in an atmosphere of trust and friendship. A single act which betrays a confidence or takes an unfair advantage can shatter a relationship which has been built slowly over a long period. We believe that a funeral ceremony should be a beautiful experience, helping the bereaved in their first step towards adjustment to their loss. Call us first.

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On Dec. 25, 1880, Layne Hall is born in Mississippi. When he died in 1990, Hall was the oldest licensed driver in the U.S. In nearly 75 years on the road, Hall never got a speeding ticket or citation of any kind. * On Dec. 26, 1917, President Woodrow Wilson announces the nationalization of a majority of the country’s railroads under the Federal Possession and Control Act due to World War I. Two days later, the United States Railroad Administration seized control. * On Dec. 27, 1932, at the height of the Great Depression, thousands turn out for the opening of Radio City Music Hall in New York City. Designed as a place where ordinary people could see quality entertainment, it remains the largest indoor theater in the world.
