HOLIDAY HOSTING IN SMALL SPACES Pare down the menu. Holiday feasts don’t have to resemble medieval banquets with excessive amounts of food and drink. Hosts with small kitchens and tiny dining quarters can pare down the menu, limiting offerings to just a single entree and a few simple side dishes, so everyone feels comfortable at the table and has ample room to eat. A small menu also gives hosts more time to spend with their loved ones during the festivities.

BE SMART WHEN SHOPPING ON YOUR SMARTPHONE Holiday shopping is an annual tradition for many people. But while it may be customary to exchange gifts with loved ones during the holiday season, how those gifts are purchased has changed dramatically over the last decade and a half. Thanks to advancements in technology, many holiday shoppers get their shopping done without ever setting foot in malls or shopping centers. And data indicates more and more shoppers are using their smartphones to do their holiday shopping. According to Nielsen Mobile Measurement, the number of mobile shoppers in December 2014 rose to 138.1 million users, an increase of nearly 14 million users from the same period just a year earlier. And mobile shoppers averaged nearly a full hour more shopping on the Web from their mobile phones in 2014 than in 2013. Convenience often drives shoppers’ decisions to use their mobile phones during the holiday season. But it’s important that shoppers not sacrifice security for the sake of convenience.

I have always thought of Christmas time, when it has come round, as a good time; a kind, forgiving, charitable time; the only time I know of, in the long calendar of the year, when men and women seem by one consent to open their shut-up hearts freely, and to think of people below them as if they really were fellow passengers to the grave, and not another race of creatures bound on other journeys. ~Charles Dickens

HOST A DELICIOUS HOLIDAY BRUNCH
585-584-9250
Many people host friends and family during the holiday season. Holiday dinners may garner the bulk of hosts’ attention, but overnight guests need to eat breakfast and lunch as well. Brunch can save hosts some work and give families a great opportunity to break bread without some of the formalities that may accompany holiday dinners.
THE MOST DOWNLOADED HOLIDAY SONGS SIMPLIFY COOKING FOR A CROWD THIS HOLIDAY SEASON Start early. If the big party is on Christmas Day, that does not mean hosts have to start cooking while everyone unwraps their presents. Hosts who are uncertain about what to cook can look for meals that can be prepared in advance so come the big day all they need to do is turn on the oven and let meals cook while the family spends time together.

It was one of those perfect English autumnal days which occur more frequently in memory than in life. The rich colours of grass and earth were intensified by the mellow light of a sun almost warm enough for spring... ~P.D. James, A Taste for Death
NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Got plastic packaging that’s a pain to get open? Use your can opener. Run it around the sides to break into your packages. It works! * For every side dish that requires extra preparation time, plan for one or two that don’t. For instance, if you are preparing a casserole with many ingredients and complicated instructions, serve a package of vegetables that require nothing more than steaming. * Wine buyers tip: Experts say to multiply the number of adult guests by a half bottle to determine how many bottles of wine to buy for your holiday gathering. Add an additional glass of wine per guest for every hour after dinner you expect guests to linger. * How to peel potatoes: Boil whole potatoes with skin on for 20-30 minutes (depending on the size of your potatoes). You should be able to stick a knife all the way through without resistance. Then remove them to an ice bath for 10 seconds each. The skin will slip right off. * “Have kids make their own whipped cream with a jam jar! Fill a screw-top jar (glass, chilled, works really well) halfway with heavy cream, a little sugar and any flavoring extracts you like, then seal and shake. Kids also can make butter with cream in a jar. You may add a pinch of salt instead of sugar, and shake longer.” -- A.A. in Florida * Researchers tell us that the best time to interview is late morning on a Tuesday. You will avoid the interviewer’s likely Monday/Friday crunch, and have his or her full attention. Do your homework on the company, and get ready to shine!

Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment Visit consignment stores: Consignment shops and Goodwill(R) stores are popular places to buy preowned items. These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale. When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles
Christmas Dinner Moves Indoors Those in power at the senior center have now decreed that we will have the annual Christmas dinner indoors instead of out in the parking lot. This flash of brilliance came after they received a number of responses that were more along the lines of “Are you crazy?” rather than the expected RSVPs. The original plan was to spread tables across the asphalt outside, with culinary arts students bringing food and drink out from the kitchen in the center, and to park a bunch of senior citizens outside in the cold in the middle of December in New England to eat that dinner. Saner heads prevailed, I hear, when a retired nurse posed the question: “And just how many of our members do you suppose are going to end up in the hospital after two hours of exposure to outdoor December temperatures?” The student chef, I also hear, claimed that he’d been asked to provide a “hot dinner” and wasn’t thrilled about having to work for hours over hot stoves only to have his creations subjected to icy temperatures. As of now, the dinner will be indoors with fewer tables. Santa will still arrive via limo, and the high-school chorus will still sing (although they’ll be out in the hall as there is no place for all of them in the actual room). Watch this space, however, because I hear there is a movement afoot (as well as a petition from members) to ditch the sit-down dinner completely and instead have a standup event with finger foods arrayed on tables and a cash bar over in the corner. “We want to see our friends and mingle” has been the cry (as well as what is written on the petition). “We want some good dance music” penciled in one signer. In a perfect world, the powers-that-be would have asked the members first. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

Pay attention to brake pads. Brake pads that are allowed to wear down can cause damage to the brakes’ rotors and calipers. That damage can prove costly and make things harder on your vehicle. Keep an eye on your vehicle’s brake pads, which are far less expensive to replace than rotors and calipers, and do not allow them to wear down to metal.

DEAR SARA: I’m a fan of harnesses, especially for dogs that like to pull at the leash. A harness fits around a dog’s front legs and torso, and has a top strap with a clip ring for the leash located between the dog’s shoulders. It’s secure and sturdy, it stays on your dog, and he won’t injure himself trying to pull away from you. (You can also keep his collar on, mainly so his license tag is always visible.) Some dog harnesses come with a sturdy handle sewn onto the top strap. It’s not so much for picking up the dog but is an additional point of control if you’re worried about your dog bolting or jumping up on other people. For the long term, of course, your Lab needs to improve his basic obedience skills. He should never tug at his leash, but should walk next to you. Putting him into a harness will give you more control. Dogs tend to respond more often to a tug on the harness, which applies pressure at several points rather than just around the neck. Those multiple contact points disperse pressure around the dog’s torso so that he remains comfortable and uninjured, reducing anxiety and hopefully making him more receptive to training commands. Harnesses are not as cheap as collars, but they’re well worth the investment, especially when dealing with a strong, independent thinker like your Lab.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * If you had to pick a “standard” pencil color, you’d probably think of a yellow-gold shade -- and that’s no accident. When pencils went into mass production in the 1890s, the finest available graphite fillings came from China. Manufacturers wanted everyone to know that they used only the best Chinese graphite, so they painted their pencils yellow, the traditional color of Chinese royalty. Honeybees are a popular pollinator of apple trees.

THE EFFECTS OF STRESS ON YOUR BODY
TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Twisted Colon Is a Surgical Emergency
Physical side effects Stress affects more than the mind, manifesting itself physically in various ways. The Mayo Clinic reports that common physical side effects of stress include headache, muscle tension or pain, including chest pain, fatigue, and a change in sex drive. Upset stomach also may be a byproduct of stress. People dealing with stress may even have trouble sleeping.
We Care About
---
DEAR DR. ROACH: This past weekend, during my son’s wedding festivities, I experienced a sigmoid volvulus. Doctors recommended surgery, but I opted for a colonoscopy, which was performed successfully. Thank goodness. I was immediately a new woman, and no one would have dreamed I went through this emergency. The surgeons recommended I have my sigmoid colon removed in order to decrease the risk of recurrence. Ideally, this would happen as soon as possible. What could have prompted the sigmoid volvulus? Is it an absolute that I must have my sigmoid colon removed? What are the odds of it recurring? If I do need the surgery, how can I best prepare for it, and what are the side effects? -- M.B. ANSWER: A volvulus is the twisting of a hollow structure in the body around its long axis (imagine holding one end of a sock in each hand and flipping the middle so it twists on itself). The sigmoid colon is the most common location. It is a surgical emergency, as tissue death and gangrene may follow. The biggest risk factor for volvulus is chronic constipation, but some people just have anatomy that predisposes them to get a volvulus. Surgery is the definitive treatment, but colonoscopy or sigmoidoscopy may be used to untwist the colon; medical professionals use the term “reduce.” However, your surgeon was right that you are at risk for this happening again. In those people with a history of volvulus, 50% to 60% will get another, and if you have two, the recurrence rate is even higher. For a person in generally good health, I would recommend definitive surgery to prevent recurrence of volvulus. There are no specific instructions to prepare for surgery, beyond taking good care of yourself and following your surgeon’s instructions about your medications (if any). Any abdominal surgery has the risk of bleeding, infection and adhesions (connections between loops of bowel that can lead to painful obstruction later); however, these risks are quite small. ***
Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2021 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy
ORAL HEALTH AND MENTAL HEALTH Oral health has often been linked to overall health. Recent studies have focused on the connection between individuals suffering from depression, anxiety, and stress and their loss of motivation to maintain good oral health habits, resulting in significant oral health concerns. The stress of mental health conditions creates cortisol, a hormone in the body that weakens the immune system, leading to gingivitis and periodontitis. Medications for mental health issues can also cause dry mouth, which can reduce the body’s defense mechanisms and make an individual susceptible to cavities and gingival inflammation. Because the oral cavity is the body’s most accessible environment for bacteria, dental professionals have
long been aware of how mental health can affect oral health. Everyone can benefit from preventive dental care. Experience proves it is to your advantage to take time for your oral health no matter how busy your personal or professional schedule. A few minutes spent each day on your teeth can not only help preserve good dental health, but it can also help safeguard your overall health. Nothing is more economical than regular dental checkups, so please let us help you take care of your oral health. You can reach BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL at 585.343.4246 for an appointment for comfortable, convenient dental care at 6 Batavia City Centre.
P. S. The most common cause of gingivitis is poor oral hygiene that allows plaque to form on teeth, causing inflammation of the surrounding gum tissues.

SCHOOLS, PARENTS AND COVID-19 (NAPSI) — K–12 education has gone through a seismic shift in the wake of COVID-19. Parents are finding themselves thrust into homeschooling, and educators, into virtual schooling. EdChoice, a national nonprofit, nonpartisan organization, teamed up with Morning Consult to release results of a recent poll to find out how it has affected families and teachers. They found that parents are clearly anxious about sending their kids back to school; 66 percent said they were concerned their children will be exposed to the virus in school. The majority (68%) are also concerned their child is missing important instruction time. The silver lining to so many states having closed down brick and mortar schools: A solid majority of parents said they felt at least somewhat prepared for the transition to e-learning and distance learning. Parents are slightly more likely to say they felt very or somewhat prepared (70%) than were teachers (67 percent). There is only one type of school choice program that allows families to receive funds into a flexible spending account to customize an education for their child. They are called education savings accounts, or ESAs. And according to EdChoice’s Public Opinion Tracker, 67 percent of Americans support them. These results are part of a new, larger polling project, the EdChoice Public Opinion Tracker. is new dashboard updates every month with results of public survey questions not only on COVID-19 but also on K–12 education topics such as schooling, testing, spending and school choice. STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * On Feb. 1, 2005, the Emergency Alert System was accidentally activated in portions of Connecticut, calling for the immediate evacuation of the entire state. Later studies showed that citizens’ common sense prevailed, with the typical response being to “change the channel” or seek other confirmation. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

DID YOU KNOW? Down syndrome is the most common chromosomal condition. People with Down syndrome may have mental impairment and a higher risk for various illnesses. While the public may be familiar with the hallmarks of Down syndrome, many people may not be aware that there are actually three different types of Down syndrome. · Trisomy-21 (nondisjunction): This is the most common type of Down syndrome and is the result of an error in cell division called “nondisjunction.” The National Down Syndrome Society says nondisjunction results in an embryo with three copies of chromosome 21 instead of two. As the embryo develops, the extra chromosome is replicated in every cell of the body. This type of Down syndrome accounts for 95 percent of all cases.
Reduce energy costs and improve the safety of your home through energy efficiency measures in owned or rented property.
· Mosaicism: This is diagnosed when there is a mixture of two types of cells, indicates the NDSS. Some contain the usual 46 chromosomes, while the others contain 47. The cells with 47 chromosomes contain an extra chromosome 21. Research indicates people with mosaicism have fewer characteristics of Down syndrome than those with other types, but this form is the least common, accounting for roughly 1 percent of all cases.

· Translocation: Accounting for 4 percent of cases of Down syndrome, translocation is marked by 46 chromosomes in all cells. However, an additional full or partial copy of chromosome 21 attaches to another chromosome, usually chromosome 14. The presence of the extra full or partial chromosome 21 causes the characteristics of Down syndrome, says the NDSS. No matter which form is diagnosed, people with Down syndrome have an extra portion of chromosome 21 present in some shape or form. This extra genetic material alters normal development in the body.

S E V RA Pavilion girls volleyball A great Pavilion Central School community and alumni has supported and contributed to our Pavilion Girls Volleyball Team! A big thank you to the Pavilion Central School administration, teachers, staff, and students that came and cheered us on. While winning the Class D Sectional Title and the Far West Regional, we had the largest crowd, always giving the team a standing ovation at match point. They also followed the team to Glens Falls for the State Tournament. Even though we had to travel the furthest of the Class D teams, we had the largest crowd with the loudest and proudest fans. Everyone in the Pavilion Central Community made an amazing experience even better. Thank you!
Wallet return On November 9th, my wallet dropped out of my car when I went to go into Target in Batavia. I didn't realize I had dropped it. A man saw it had been dropped and brought it to the desk intact. A relative working at the desk knew me and brought it to me. I appreciate your integrity more than you know, and I am very grateful! - A very thankful neighbor
School violence I have been hearing rumors of [local] school district having a bullying problem again. My two great grand children, plus other kids are being bullied, as well. My one great grandson was pushed into a "pond." Why are these bullies being tolerated again? My granddaughter went through this school district in the 1980s, and she was beaten on her head. Why? If you have surveillance cameras, please review them. Stop the violence. This behavior is not acceptable! Manchin makes sense Joe Manchin stood up against his own Democratic party. This new bill will cost a lot, although [some] say it costs nothing. The biggest polluters in the world did not attend the Climate Summit, and Sleepy Joe lived up to his name. Shutting down America's coal, natural gas and oil industries kills our jobs and our independence from other countries. If we don't produce it for ourselves, other countries will produce it for us. This does not help America or the climate. Hope you enjoy the price of gas and your upcoming heating bills. Pull together If there were ever a time in the history of our world that everyone needs to be pulling together, it is now. But it seems that instead of pulling together, we in the United States seem to be finding more reasons to find fault with one another. Neither the far right nor the far left are where we should be. With all the problems Covid has caused because of businesses having to temporarily close down all over the world, we are experiencing major supply shortages. Many companies find themselves forced to raise their prices to stay in business. Things will eventually get better, and if we all work together, it will happen sooner rather than later.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * Had Georgie Fletcher of Australia never signed on to play the mobile game “Words With Friends,” her husband, Simon, might be dead. Georgie struck up a friendship via the game’s chat feature with frequent opponent Beth Legler from Missouri. One day, Georgie told Beth that Simon hadn’t been feeling well. Beth relayed his symptoms to her husband Larry, a doctor, who insisted that the Fletchers go to the hospital immediately. A 99% blockage was discovered near his heart, which, left untreated, would have certainly been fatal.

* The process of things being stretched out and torn apart as they enter a black hole is called spaghettification. * Our senses of taste and smell are cut by 50% and 20%, respectively, during flights, which is why airplane food has never tasted so hot. (“That’s what I’ve been telling you!” said every airplane food chef, ever.) *** Thought for the Day: “A mind that is stretched by a new experience can never go back to its old dimensions.” -- Oliver Wendell Holmes GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

COMMUNITY HYGIENE BANK FINDS A BY KIMBERLY LONG
W
e may not realize this, but ma many individuals and families livingg in the Brockport area struggle with th obtaining the necessary items to maintain n hygiene! This is a difficulty for individualss and families that are in need. Food stamps are a wonderful resource for community members in need, but they do not cover hygiene items! This includes toothbrushes, ng paper towels, toilet paper, cleaning ine in products, adult necessities, feminine products, and a list of other products.. The Community Hygiene Bank (CHB) of Brockport supports their community by providing these important items to those in need. Before the pandemic, this organization was able to provide not just hygienic items, but also offer food and drink, social support, and even prayer while these individuals waited on intake. Intake is the process in which each person in need goes through to ensure that they get what they really need, and that they qualify for this support. Now, things are a bit different. There are no longer large groups of people sitting and chatting in one area; instead, single families and individuals come in one at a time to go through intake and evaluation. Rather than having a runner take their items to their vehicles for them, the CHB uses a drive-up system where the items are loaded directly into the vehicles. Support from
United Way during the pandemic also largely assisted the group in continuing their efforts in supporting their community, and they are extremely grateful for this contribution, among others. Scarlett Aeckerle noted, ‚“This was the only thing these people came out of the house for!‚“ The only social contact they had seen since the shutdown was when they pulled up to the hygiene bank to receive items they desperately needed. This time was especially hard for those who had lost their jobs. This, unfortunately, included many elderly people in the community. However, these changes did not limit the help these people received, and if anything, it gave them the social interaction that they were lacking during this time. Having gone through

upheavals upheaval up al of its own, the Community Hygiene Bank presses on, and continues to assist their co community at Jubilee Christian Church, th their new location at 3565 Lake Rd! The Community Hygiene Bank will hold its next ‚“Personal Care Blessings Bag‚“ Distribution at 12:00pm (noon) on January 8th, 2022! All are welcome to join in the efforts of helping their community. Thi This distribution will be a drive-up system, and th an those in need must be present to receive a bl bles essi si bag. These bags will include things blessing such as soap, shampoo, razors, feminine products, toothbrushes, toothpaste, paper products, dish and laundry detergent, and cleaning items. Starting at 11:30 am, an entry ticket will be given to each car that enters the Jubilee Christian Church parking lot. These items are available to Brockport area residents of any age who are in need. When the CHB held its first event in The Community March of 2017, they served 11 families. Now, in 2021, they are Hygiene Bank has serving 150 families, and that found a new number is still growing! Because home at Jubilee of this, the need for donations, Christian Church! products, and volunteers is dire! A large majority of the volunteers in the past have been elderly, so they are at risk if they continue to volunteer under current conditions. The CHB urges anyone who is healthy and ready to consider serving those in need in their community. More information can be found on their Facebook page, or by emailing communityhygienebank@gmail. com. The CHB can also be reached at (585) 6378530. The Brockport community has often thanked the CHB for all of its hard work and faith throughout the hard times of COVID-19, and they appreciate the ongoing support that the CHB has given to community members in need.
