PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
585-343-2910 Q: DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My new cat, “Corky,” is absolutely shredding the fabric legs of my sofa! I buy plenty of toys for him, so why is he so attracted to my expensive furniture? -- Leo in Little Rock, Arkansas
INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT FALL The colors of fall foliage are actually present year-round. Fall is known for its colorful foliage. But the pigments responsible for those colors are actually present year-round. According to the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry, green, yellow and orange pigments are present year-round. However, during spring and summer, the leaves serve as factories where many foods necessary to help the tree grow are manufactured. That process takes place in the leaf in cells containing chlorophyll, which gives the leaves their green color. This process ceases as hours of daylight decrease and temperatures drop. As a result, chlorophyll breaks down, the green color disappears and the vivid colors of fall foliage begin to appear.

DEAR LEO: Welcome to cat ownership! Shredded furniture frequently comes with the territory. But please don’t think I’m telling you to get used to it. This is a common problem. You will find plenty of advice online on ways to stop your cat from scratching up all of the vertical surfaces in your house. Cats adore fabric sofas; they are ideal because the wood underneath sharpens their claws while the fabric provides just the right amount of resistance. You’ll need to attack this problem from a few angles. First, by teaching Corky not to scratch furniture. Put a scratching post next to the sofa. When he reaches up to the sofa leg, gently reach under his paws and lift them up and away. Then, place Corky in front of the scratching post and pet him. Repeat this every time. A faster way to stop the problem is to shake a can of coins or hiss loudly, but this is negative reinforcement that provides no alternative for his scratching. And cats need to scratch! Once Corky starts going to the scratching post first, gradually move the post away from the sofa. To save your sofa fabric during this time, cover it with a thick layer (or multiple layers) of plastic sheeting either stapled or duct taped into place. The added benefit is that plastic is not a pleasurable scratching material, so Corky will eventually start ignoring it. Send your tips, questions or comments to ask@pawscorner.com. PEOPLE TO TIP AND GIFT THIS HOLIDAY SEASON Are you making a list and checking it twice? If so, don’t forget to add a few extra people to that list who are worthy of a gift this holiday season. Certainly friends and family are in mind for presents, but what about the service providers in your life? After a challenging year, people in the service industry might benefit from a holiday boost this year more than ever. Here’s who you may want to spread some cheer to this holiday season. Hairdressers and nail techs: It takes a lot of effort to look one’s best, and these individuals help people put their best selves forward. Consider tipping the amount you would normally spend on one visit. If you get your hair or nails done frequently and consider this person a friend, opt for a gift instead, such as a gift card to a nice restaurant or a pampering service for him or her. Babysitter or caregiver: This person is likely close with the family and may be deserving of more than a tip. Pick an age-appropriate gift you know this person will love. What about a coveted pair of Bluetooth-enabled earbuds or headphones? A gift card to a store you know this person frequents also can be fitting, or a year-long subscription to a streaming music or movie service. Landscapers: If the same person or crew services the lawn most of the time, a tip of $20 each is an appropriate amount.
PURCHASE A $25 GIFT CARD & RECEIVE A FREE $5 GIFT CERTIFICATE
Teachers: Class parents may take up a collection for the teacher and offer one class gift. If your student is educated by multiple teachers and the school staff is top-notch, consider stocking the staff lounge with snacks and beverages or cater a lunch.
Teleflora‛s Rosy Sleigh Bouquet

Mail carrier: The mail is delivered six days of the week in any and all weather. Treat your mail carrier to a nice gift, but stick to the rules of the U.S. Postal Service. Mail carriers are not allowed to accept cash, checks or gift cards that can be used like credit cards. Stick to a gift of no more than $25. Cleaning person: You rely on this person to keep your home tidy and clean. He or she is deserving of the cost of one visit, according to Roseanne Thomas, author of “Excuse Me: The Survival Guide to Modern Business Etiquette.” Individuals can use their discretion concerning service providers in their lives who may be worthy of some extra cheer this holiday season.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * Between 1970 and 1973, four Israeli fighter pilots held as POWs in an Egyptian prison passed their time by translating J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Hobbit” from English into Hebrew. The book was sent to them by their family members via the Red Cross. The pilots’ version was published commercially in 1977 and is still considered by many to be one of the best Hebrew translations available.
NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Looking for a great cause for gifting this year? Go to www. charitynavigator.org to find out more about how your prospective charities rank in areas like CEO pay, money spent on fundraising, etc. * Need a quick batch of cookies? Keep a box of cake mix on hand. Instead of the listed ingredients, add two eggs and a half-cup of oil to the mix. Mix and shape, then bake at 350 F for 10 minutes. They are really good, and you can get pretty creative.

Place inside a gallon-size zippertop bag, tie with a ribbon, then trim off the zipper-top, leaving just the plastic. Looks nice.

Small businesses have such a big impact on their communities, and the world at large, that it might be time to reconsider refering to them as “small.” According to the World Bank, small businesses have a major impact on the world economy, especially in emerging countries. In such nations, small and medium enterprises contribute up to 60 percent of total employment and up to 40 percent of national income. Small businesses figure to frame their economies in emerging countries in the coming decades, and they’re already doing so in developed nations, such as the United States and Canada.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Questions About COPD ---
Lakeville 3513 Thomas Dr., Suite 2 Henrietta
DEAR DR. ROACH: I was diagnosed with COPD a year and a half ago and have several questions. I seem to be unable to get answers from my pulmonary doctor, as he is always busy and doesn’t have a lot of time to spend with me. How fast does COPD progress? I’m 78 years old, in reasonably good health and exercise regularly. I have chronic bronchitis with a slight amount of emphysema. I had been coughing a little during the day, had mucus in the morning and coughed at night for two to three hours after bedtime -to the extent of having to use a rescue inhaler to settle down and get back to sleep. After he put me on Trelegy, all of those symptoms disappeared, and I feel perfectly normal except for shortness of breath. My other question is what is the life expectancy of a person diagnosed with COPD? I’ve read about answers to this all over the map, from two or three years after diagnosis to 15 or more years. I would presume that it depends on other factors such as physical condition, exercise, weight, etc. But I would like some kind of guideline for someone in my condition. -- T.J. ANSWER: There are two major types of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: chronic bronchitis, where the primary problem is productive cough; and emphysema, which is destruction of the small airways. Shortness of breath is a common feature of all types of COPD. The most prevalent cause is smoking. I can’t answer your questions on rate of progression and overall prognosis without much more information, but it is certainly a good sign that many of your symptoms are well-controlled on treatment. The single biggest factor in rate of progression of COPD is whether you are a smoker, but not being able to exercise, being male and being very underweight are additional risk factors for faster progression. Lung function falls inexorably over time. In people who have no lung disease, the normal decline with aging is never enough to cause symptoms during normal activity. In someone with COPD, the decline over months to years can cause symptoms to occur first with exercise, and then when at rest. Once people have severe symptoms at rest, the prognosis becomes quite poor. No medication can reverse lung damage. Inhaled steroids reduce inflammation and can slow progression somewhat. Inhaled bronchodilators open airways and make breathing easier. Inhaled anticholinergics reduce secretions. Your medication, Trelegy, contains all of these medicines, and is appropriate for people with severe COPD or those who do not have good symptom control with a less intensive regimen. An online calculator for prognosis can be found at https:// bit.ly/2N1UEoy. It can be used if you know how far you can walk in six minutes and the results of your breathing test (specifically, the FEV1%). ***
Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2020 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

We Care About
Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy
IS IT YOUR TOOTH OR YOUR SINUSES? Sinus infections can cause a runny nose, headaches, pressure, and tooth pain. This is because the sinuses, teeth, and gums all have similar nerves that transmit pain signals to one another. The maxillary sinuses are situated behind the cheekbones on either side of the nose and are the largest sinus cavity. Their size and position make them the most likely to cause tooth pain when they are infected. If your dental pain is caused by a sinus infection, it will lack symptoms of tooth problems such as swollen gums, tooth pain from contact with hot or cold food or drink or items, and swelling in the jaw area. Swelling in the upper cheek area can be caused by tooth and sinus infections.

CURE!!
YOUR FUNGAL TOENAILS
• Were you embarrassed this summer to wear sandals or go barefoot because of thick, yellow nails? Now’s the time to get treatment. • If left untreated, fungal toenails can cause: recurring athlete’s foot, infected ingrown toenails (requiring surgery) and discomfort wearing shoes, not to mention their unsightly appearance. • Recent studies show that fungal nail infections lead to a weakened immune system. During times like this we all need to keep our immune systems functioning optimally. • Patients with diabetes, poor circulation, and numbness to their feet can develop more serious complications. • There are safer, new topical medications available to help cure fungal toenails. • A simple one a day pill for 3 months will usually cure fungal toenails within 6-9 months from the start of treatment. • Treatment now may result in clear, thinner nails. • Call now for an appointment to determine if you’re a candidate for this newer treatment.
DID YOU KNOW? A report published in the Lancet in 2012 suggests that a lack of exercise now causes as many deaths across the globe as smoking. A team of 33 researchers representing centers around the world contributed to the study. It was determined that about onethird of all adults are not getting enough physical activity to keep them healthy and to prevent the nearly 5.3 million deaths per year that can be linked to sedentary lifestyles. The United States Department of Health and Human Services recommends that adults get 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity per week, or 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity. It’s also beneficial to do a combination of activities for exercise variety.
What’s Being Done For example, one major American corporation with a long, proud history of environmental sustainability and a strong track record of action and success has raised the bar on its environmental commitments and accelerated the progress of short- and long-term goals that meet or exceed environmental regulations. As Marc Bitzer, Chairman and CEO of Whirlpool Corporation put it. “As we continue to navigate the impact of COVID-19, the health and safety of our employees and communities remain our priority. We strongly believe that our sustainability efforts are as important now as ever. These efforts are guided by a clear mission to earn trust and create demand while in constant pursuit of improving life at home.” To that end, the company has: • Reduced its absolute plant emissions by 18% by investing in efficiency and renewable energy; • Achieved zero waste to landfill in eight plants across three regions; • Accomplished a global waste-torecycling rate of 96%; and • Developed an innovative solution to reuse water from an existing chiller that saves 31 million gallons of water each year.

HOW TO SUPPORT BUSINESSES DURING MANDATORY RESTRICTIONS Recognize that more than food is available for takeout. In response to the COVID-19 outbreak, Governor Andrew Cuomo of New York announced relaxations on laws governing what can and cannot be obtained via takeout, allowing takeout on goods that were previously restricted in regard to takeout. For example, Cuomo announced that the New York State Liquor Authority intended to temporarily relax regulations regarding the takeout and delivery of alcohol. Utilizing such services can be a great way to support local businesses while still adhering to recommendations designed to slow the spread of COVID-19. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles Great Gift Idea - Chocolate-Dipped Pretzels These pretzels are super easy to whip up to give as a gift. Dip them a day ahead, and pack them in a box lined with waxed tissue paper. Don't forget to remind your friends that pretzels are best eaten within a week -- if they're even around that long! 8 ounces milk chocolate, broken into pieces 27 (8-inch long) pretzel rods Flaked coconut and/or green, red and white sprinkles (for topping) 1. Place chocolate in microwave-safe measuring cup or mug. Heat, covered with waxed paper, in microwave on High 1 to 2 minutes or until chocolate is almost melted, stirring occasionally until smooth. 2. Meanwhile, place each topping choice on separate sheet of waxed paper or on individual plates. 3. Holding 1 pretzel rod at a time, dip in melted chocolate, tipping cup to cover about half of rod with chocolate. Allow excess chocolate to drip off pretzel back into cup. Immediately sprinkle coated pretzel with choice of topping. Carefully place coated pretzel rod in pie plate or shallow bowl, leaning uncoated portion on edge. 4. Repeat with remaining pretzels (try to keep pretzels from touching one another in pie plate) and refrigerate about 20 minutes to set coating. Store pretzels in tightly sealed container, with waxed paper between layers, at room temperature up to 1 week. Makes 27 pretzels. * Each serving: About 135 calories, 6g total fat (3g saturated), 3mg cholesterol, 165mg sodium, 18g total carbohydrate, 1g dietary fiber, 3g protein.

Thank you & Best Wishes! Thank you with all my heart to Habitat for Humanity of Livingston County. Thanks to them with the support of many volunteers and my family, my children and I are safely and happily moved into our new home. A special thanks and extra well wishes to John Marks, Butch Erbe and Ron Walker as they “retire” from Habitat. I am so thankful for all you have done and for the chance to get to know you all! God bless you richly. Amanda D. & Sons
Thanksgiving I just finished reading Amanda Dudek’s Hometown Story about Thanksgiving from November 20th and want to thank her and GVPS for sharing such an uplifting and positive message with your readers.
For the birds To those maintenance people in parking lots that chase people down who feed the starving seagulls: Seagulls are scavengers – they actually clean up garbage from parking lots and the environment. I always pick a remote corner to feed them. After they eat bread, Tostitos, and popcorn, there is nothing left to clean up. Man has burned their
trees, and polluted their drinking water with climate change, paved their space and run over them with traffic, and stolen their habitat with commercial development. Half of all-American birds are gone. Yet you threatened to kick me off the property if I fed them. Another man told me it was illegal to feed them. Where is your heart and sense of justice for birds and animals?

Lowe’s In Brockport Rocks! On Black Friday, we spoke to Derik, the store manager, over the phone concerning a price drop in something that we had just purchased. He said we were within the 30-day price match

and gave us the credit for the difference in the price we had paid. He was nice enough to do it over the phone, (we had our receipt with all the needed information), so that we would not have to go to the store. He was kind, quick, and efficient. No hassles! Thank you so much for painlessly handling the matter. We appreciated it.

Scottsville Cancer Patient Adopted for Christmas by Cal-Mum Community Members BY AMANDA DUDEK
I
t began as a cry for help. Out of options, Scottsville resident, Lou Stout, turned to the Facebook page of nearby Caledonia and Mumford. Is anyone willing to adopt a 52-year-old terminally ill cancer patient for Christmas? she posted. I am unable to do much of anything for him, and not knowing how much time he has, I really want him to have a special Christmas. She concluded with their location and a quiet prayer. Lou Stout has been with terminally ill cancer patient, Michael, for 15 years. They have been married for nearly seven. “He is my world, my everything,” she said. “I have been through some really bad relationships to get to where I am, and I don’t know what I am going to do when I lose him. My focus is on him.” Michael Stout has been diagnosed with stage four prostate cancer and stage four bone cancer. He was given one to two years to live in January 2018 after lengthy bouts of doctors’ visits and tests. “It took about two and a half years to figure this out,” said Lou. “I have been his advocate from day one. We saw so many specialists, but when his toes on one foot turned black with no skin color whatsoever, I insisted on an ultrasound.” The doctors found a blood clot running the length of his leg. Michael needed surgery. The large blood clot had blocked his iliac artery, affecting his walking. During the surgery, the doctors found cancer. “We had lost everything,” said Lou, explaining that Michael, a former truck driver, could no longer sit for long hours at a time. “He couldn’t work before the surgery, and with his diagnosis, he couldn’t work after the surgery either. We lost our home, our motorcycle, everything.” The Stouts, originally from Phelps, had no choice but to move, staying briefly in Honeoye Falls before finding a place in Scottsville. “It was something we could afford,” Lou explained. “We have been here for a year and a half. We have had to be very careful,” she added. “Michael quarantined himself before the quarantine went into effect. The only time he leaves the house is for his doctor’s appointments, and he doesn’t even like to do that.” While Michael’s circumstances are isolating enough, sadly, he is also estranged from his family. “We have no family support,” said Lou as Michael agreed. “His family doesn’t reach out to him, so everything is on my plate. I am trying to make every holiday as special as possible, and I would like him to have a great Christmas to hold onto when his time comes.” “I couldn’t care less about my holiday,” Lou continued. “Every holiday that I get to be with him is my gift. I figured I would do what I could to make this Christmas as special as it could be.” Immediately, the communities of Caledonia and Mumford responded with unbridled generosity. Please message me something he would like, said one. I can send a Christmas card! said another. This is so sweet! How can I help?

Michael and Lou Stout, who were married on Valentine’s Day in 2014, renewed their vows this year on Halloween, their originally intended wedding day.
What can I do to help? I want to help give him a great Christmas! My family would love to! I’m willing to pick up and deliver from the Caledonia area! Let me know what he needs or wants. I’d like to help! The overwhelming number of responses took Lou’s breath “In this away. “It’s wonderful!” she said. world that “There are no words to describe the gratitude we have and the love is so we feel from the Caledonia and isolating Mumford communities.” and closed Incredibly, Michael and Lou off, we do not know those who have don’t feel responded. “They are complete alone strangers,” said Lou, her voice anymore!” thick. “Just the thought of someone thinking about him... We feel - Lou Stout so blessed and so loved by the incredible amount of people who have expressed their desire to help us. HOME SERVICES
FINDING THE RIGHT FENCING Aluminum fencing is ideal for those looking for something that’s both ornamental and functional. Aluminum fencing may not appeal to those homeowners whose biggest priority is privacy, as aluminum fences are not solid walls. But aluminum fences are typically low maintenance, and they can be effective at keeping both kids and pets in the yard. Aluminum fences painted with a rust-inhibiting primer may require even less maintenance than aluminum fences painted without primer.
