TIPS TO HELP REALIZE YOUR GOALS THIS YEAR Make note of potential obstacles. Recognizing potential hurdles in advance of their appearance can help you overcome these obstacles and stay the course toward achieving your goals. For example, men and women hoping to lose weight can look ahead to occasions that might compromise their efforts, such as a loved one’s wedding or backyard barbecue. Recognizing these obstacles in advance gives people a chance to develop a plan to overcome them. In the weight loss example, men and women can choose vegetarian options from reception menus or resolve to avoid alcohol, which tends to be high in calories.

HOW TO SUPPORT BUSINESSES DURING MANDATORY RESTRICTIONS ORDER DELIVERY: It’s still possible to enjoy foods from your favorite local restaurants. Many restaurants that had not previously done so have begun to offer delivery services, be it curbside or at-home, and this can provide a great respite for families who have had to cook three meals a day at home for their entire families for extended periods of time. Curbside delivery has made it possible to get takeout meals without compromising social distancing recommendations.

We Care About
We make your smile our number one priority!
Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy
A SIMPLE SOLUTION FOR GAPPED TEETH Gaps between teeth are fairly common, and for most people they are not worth the time, expense, and discomfort involved in getting braces or aligners. However, there is another option available for those with a gap they are unhappy with. Although dental bonding is often used to fix or conceal minor discoloration, cracks, or chips in teeth, it can also be used to fill in small gaps between teeth to create a more even smile. After a thorough cleaning and assessment of the problem area, bonding material is applied to the side of one tooth and then shaped to look natural and uniform with the rest of the teeth. Finally, it is hardened with a special light tool.
Although gaps between your teeth may not be a big issue for you, when missing, neglected, damaged, or otherwise unattractive teeth prevent you from smiling, take care of the problem with the help of your dentist. Here at BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, we care about how you feel, and we’ll work with you to help you achieve optimal oral health, from cosmetic enhancements to complete restorations and routine preventive care. For gentle dental care for everyone in your family, using the leading-edge techniques, equipment, and materials available today, please call us at 585.343.4246, 6 Batavia City Centre.
P.S. While dental bonding material is not as strong as natural teeth, it is less likely to chip than fillings, crowns, or veneers, making it optimal for filling gaps.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Neighbor’s Dog Is Giving Him the Eye DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My neighbor’s dog, every day since I moved into this house in rural New York, has a habit of coming up to the property line when I go out to check on my garden. She will stand right at the edge, lift a paw, bark at me, then turn around and leave. What’s up with that behavior? -- Jim G., via email DEAR JIM: That sounds like a well-behaved, well-trained dog. Or, your next-door neighbor has, or had, a low-power wire along the property edge that delivers a shock to a dog when it crosses the line. Whatever it is, she was trained not to cross into the neighbor’s yard. I like that you noted her body mannerisms. Raising a paw is a signal that she is alerted and checking you out. A nonaggressive bark is an attention signal. It’s something like, “I see you, and I want you to know that I’ve got my eye on you.” And her turning back after that bark is a good sign. She doesn’t see you as a threat. She’s said her piece, and now she’s off on her way. Being aware of a dog’s body language and barking is important even if you don’t own a dog. A bark followed by a growl (or vice versa) is a warning signal meaning “back off.” A raised paw and an intent stare at a specific object is typical of an alert and energetic but calm dog. A dog that charges and stops is being aggressive and there’s a good chance that behavior can escalate into an attack. If you get the opportunity to meet your neighbors, compliment them on their dog’s good behavior.

CLEANING MAKE LIGHTS SPARKLE Dust regularly. Dusting regularly can prevent the buildup of grime that’s difficult to wash off. Try to dust light fixtures weekly or biweekly. The more frequent the fixtures are dusted, the less time each cleaning session will take. Soft cloths can remove the dust from most bulbs and exterior surfaces. Lamp shades may need more attention. Use a lamb’s-wool duster to attract dirt so it doesn’t leave a residue on the lampshade.

WAYS TO IM PROVE INDOOR AIR QUALITY ALL YEAR LONG
PLUMBING
As w inter w ears on, it’s not uncommon for people living in cold w eather climates to experience some cabin fever. W inter w eather confines many people to their homes, making many antsy to get out once the first signs of spring begin to appear. In addition to contributing to cabin fever, w inter w eather can have a negative impact on indoor air quality. W hile air pollution is something most often associated w ith densely populated cities, the air inside homes is not immune to pollution, especially during long w inters w hen w indow s are often closed for months at a time. Though open w indow s in spring and summer can vastly improve indoor air quality, there are w ays to ensure that air stays fresh and healthy regardless of w hich season it happens to be.

Homeowners who like to entertain outdoors may want to make their outdoor living spaces more private. Pergolas allow light to filter through but obstruct direct view of patio activity, especially when combined with some gauzy draperies hanging on the sides. An enclosed patio or threeseason room can be a worthwhile addition for homeowners who like to enjoy the great outdoors without being in the elements or on display for neighbors. Structures vary from screened-in porches to greenhouses to removable gazebos. Potted plants or trailing vines can soften the structural edges and help the privacy devices blend in with the natural surroundings. Page 9

Congratulations to our
Winner, Joanne Mistler The year is new, the Past is gone, the best is yet to come. Out with the old, out with the bad now a lesson to learn from... You can't change the past, you can't stop the rain, you can't bring back the words... So let us all learn from the makings of God... the flowers, the creeks and the birds.... When the sun shines above, the flowers will grow, and the birds will all sing, and the creeks will all flow... So my dear friends, let us all learn from this... enjoy all the things with such wonderful bliss.... Tomorrow's not given, Today is part gone, The darkness will follow.... But so will the dawn.....
Thank you to every one that submitted an entry! Over 100 entries were received!

Milton Hershey dabbled in commercializing chocolate. Hershey began as a caramel maker, but experimented with covering the caramels in chocolate in 1894. Hershey would go on to develop one of the most successful brands of chocolate in the United States, which included the famous Hershey bar. In 1907, Hershey launched production of tear-drop shaped “kisses.” (The chocolates were given their unusual name because of the “smooching” noise made by the chocolate when being manufactured.) The kisses became wildly popular and made for affordable chocolate gifts on Valentine’s Day. Many other chocolate manufacturers soon began packaging their chocolates in special boxes for Valentine’s Day. Russell Stover and Whitmans are two such manufacturers who have long specialized in heart-shaped boxes or other decorative Valentine’s gifts.

BEST BUYS FOR THE NEW YEAR
Upcycling: Transforming the ‘Old’ into a Better ‘New’ Turn old or discarded furniture, cabinets and doors into fresh new creations through “upcycling” -- high-end “recycling” that reduces trash at landfills by refurbishing or repurposing existing pieces, often enhancing the value. Doors and more: Solid wood doors make great tops for tables and kitchen islands, old-fashioned screen doors hung from the ceiling can store pots and pans, and old windows make attractive wall hangings used “as is” or with additions, such as photos.
Clothing: Post-Christmas sales are booming, and stores are looking to sell w hat’s left of their inventories to make room for spring and summer selections. Even though the w eather outside is still cold, sw eaters, pants, coats, and more are usually available at a discount come January. It may take some digging through the racks, but there’s an excellent chance to discover some great items.

NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Fruit math: A tomato or an apple plus green bananas in a paper bag equals ripe bananas. * Empty tissue boxes have so many uses. Try lining one with a plastic grocery bag and keeping it in your car for stray trash. Or you can use it to corral all of those plastic grocery bags until you need them -- just stuff them in one at a time. Lastly, and probably my favorite: Cut out doors and windows to use as houses for kids’ toys. Imagination makes the possibilities endless. -- JoAnn * “Jazz up your pancakes by adding pureed frozen blueberries or strawberries. It turns the mix either blue or red, and it’s fun for the kiddos.” -- V.R. in Florida * “We are always prompted to choose strong passwords, but a random collection of letters, numbers and special symbols can be hard to remember. I make a strong password by using a coded phrase, like “My three boys are No. 1,” which might be “MY3boysR#1.” Just thought I’d share my trick, but not my password!” -- R.W. in Iowa * Keep a bottle of club soda handy for spot stains on carpets or upholstery. It’s good for more than just drinks.

s e v Ra Thank you for your kindness! Thank you to the man who paid for our order after we let him in line in front of us. This was in the drive thru at the Dunkin Doughnuts in Batavia. Sad & Mad To the people that leave their dog out in the freezing cold. At least you could put the small doghouse closer to your house for added protection. Doesn’t seem that you ever let the dog inside. Why do you even bother having a pet? All the extra straw/hay doesn’t really help. This has been going on for years. You should be ashamed. Thankfully, the gentleman at Dogwood Trading Company not only kept it safe for her, but he had gone down the street to try to find us, also. When he couldn’t, he’d left a note on the door to let us know he had it in case we came back after store after hours. When I called, he said he’d even meet us to return it if
we couldn’t get back before the store closed. We were so thankful for his kindness and helpfulness. This type of thing wouldn’t happen in a big box store.

Celebrating 20 Years
TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH
Serving Our Community!
By Keith Roach, M.D.
Childhood Vaccinations Still Mostly Effective --good health (I don’t take any medications). I rarely get sick with colds or flu. I have been vaccinated with all the common vaccinations for our childhood. With all the immigrants coming into our country, I am wondering if any have been given childhood vaccinations in their countries. I fear that chickenpox, measles, etc., could re-enter this country. If so, do our childhood vaccinations still protect us from these diseases? Should seniors be re-vaccinated or is that harmful at our age? -- C.S. ANSWER: Legal immigrants into the U.S. are required to have all vaccinations as recommended by the Advisory Committee for Immunization Practices. Undocumented immigrants are more difficult to study, but what data there is suggests that vaccination rates are roughly the same in the countries of origin of many undocumented immigrants as in the United States. In fact, several Central American countries have higher vaccination rates than the U.S. currently. Analysis of outbreaks of vaccine-preventable diseases have suggested that most of these outbreaks have come from visitors (Americans or foreign visitors) from countries with high levels of ongoing transmission who spread the disease to others during their infectious period. Because there are some communities where there are enough unvaccinated people due to medical reasons, personal choice or ineffective vaccination to allow spread of the disease, there continues to be ongoing infection in the U.S. This is especially true of measles. People born before 1957 are generally considered to be immune to measles, and the vast majority have had chickenpox. People born between 1963 and 1967 (that might be you) are at risk for having had ineffective measles vaccination, and those at risk should check their immunization status and may need revaccination, especially those in an area near an outbreak.

HEALTH BENEFITS OF AVOCADOS Avocados can benefit vision. Avocados contain lutein and zeaxanthin, a pair phytochemicals concentrated in the tissues in the eyes. Lutein and zeaxanthin are believed to block blue light from reaching structures in the retina, thereby reducing a person’s risk of developing macular degeneration. In fact, studies published in the American Journal of Epidemiology, the American Journal of Ophthalmology and The Archives of Ophthalmology found that diets high in lutein and zeaxanthin are associated with a lower risk of macular degeneration, which the American Macular Degeneration Foundation notes is the leading cause of vision loss in the United States.

DID YOU KNOW? Pizza continues to remain a popular comfort food and go-to staple for quick, family-friendly meals. Statistics Brain reports that 93 percent of Americans eat at least one piece of pizza per month. Five billion pizzas are sold worldwide each year, and the United States accounts for three billion of those pizzas. The average person will eat 46 slices of pizza each year. The world can thank Raffaele Esposito for creating the first pizza that resembled the pizza the world knows today. Esposito created the pizza for Italy’s Queen Margherita when she visited Naples in 1889. The crust was garnished with tomatoes, mozzarella and basil to represent the national colors of Italy: red, white and green.

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles Another COVID Scam You know it’s getting bad when local police chiefs go on the nightly news to warn against scams. That’s what is happening in my area, and possibly in yours. Scammers are going all out to steal your information, money and identity, and they’re using the COVID vaccine as their tool. A few weeks ago, the scammers’ tactic was to claim we were eligible for a special COVID Medicare card. The card doesn’t exist. So many of us might have said that in response to the frequent phone calls that the scammers changed tactics. Now they claim to have an appointment for you to get the COVID vaccine. Here’s how it works: A scammer will claim to be calling from your doctor’s office, without actually naming the doctor. All they need from you, they say, is your Medicare card number and possibly your bank account or Social Security number “for identification.” Your best bet is to just hang up. But if you ask for the name of the doctor, they won’t know it. It’s the same with hospitals and clinics. If you’re not sure whether the call is fake, hang up and call your doctor, the hospital or clinic, and ask if they’ve tried to contact you. Scammers also are using different tactics: telling you they can fit you into a quick appointment, saying they’re from Medicare or your insurance provider, sending you an email that indicates you can get a fast appointment reservation by calling their special phone number, or offering you the vaccine at a “reduced cost” (the vaccines are free). Some of them actually offer to mail the vaccine to you. Don’t fall for any of these scams. If you need help signing up online for an appointment, call your doctor’s office or the senior center. Don’t give scammers any information, not even your name. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

FACTS ABOUT FEBRUARY February was named after an end-of-year celebration called “Februa,” also known as “Februalia” or “Februatio.” Februa was a Roman festival of ritual purification and washing - a spring cleaning of sorts. This festival was later incorporated into Lupercalia, another Roman celebration that has ties to Groundhog Day. January was actually added after February and was named after Janus, the Roman god of beginnings and endings.

High Schools Sports Resume; Children to Benefit BY SCOTT WURTZEL
L
ocal high school sports are resuming; what do they need to do to stay open? Dr. Steven Schulz, a pediatric medical director for Rochester Regional Health, discussed the benefits of resuming these sports, and how to stay safe moving forward. February 1st was the first day local, high risk, high school sports being allowed to compete. During that day, Dr. Schulz answered multiple questions that pertained to the risks and benefits of student athletes being able to compete again. What are risks that come with lack of socialization? “We do know we are social beings, and socialization does benefit children,” Dr. Schulz stated. “Obviously, we have had our limitations with that because of Covid but there are smart and safe ways to allow that to resume, and we are definitely seeing concerns with mental health from kids who have been struggling, but these guidelines and updated recommendations reflect our improving rates of Covid in the region and the state.” What are mental and emotional benefits of resuming these sports? “Besides just the socialization and the positive self-esteem comes from doing well with sports, we all know with exercise we release endorphins that help our well-being,” says Dr. Schulz. “Hopefully kids will be sleeping better with some of those activities as well. We know from the physical side of things inactivity leads mostly to problems with obesity and bone density and all those sorts of things. We’ve seen weight increase throughout the pandemic, as folks have not been as active. Again, as this is all done safely, increasing physical activity and allow sports to resume can have a beneficial impact.” Dr. Schulz also explained that these benefits are possible because of how schools are handling safety. “We know the schools have been doing that safely: because they are using the screening protocols, because kids are staying home when they are sick, because kids are being identified quickly if they are not, because everyone is wearing masks, and following proper social distancing, making adjustments to classroom sizes and lunchroom sizes, and those kinds of things.”
“All sports are not the same in terms of risk, so that’s something else we definitely need to keep in mind,” Dr. Schulz pointed out. “The closer the contact, the more concern there is for potential spread of Covid. Indoors are of higher concern than outdoor activities. The more spectators, teammates, and people involved, the higher risk as well because the higher the chance any one person might be infected with Covid. There is definitely still risk there. There are new variants of the Covid virus out there in the community.”
Dr. Steven Schulz
Dr. Schulz followed it by saying, “With the precautions, the American Academy of Pediatrics has recently come out with updated guidelines on youth sports and the CDC has as well. One of the biggest things is that we are now recommending that all student athletes—with the exception of certain sports—wear a mask during competition.” Dr. Schulz went into further detail about minimizing risks. “During these competitions and during these practices, it’s really important that we limit who is there only to those who really need to be there, and that any kind of training that can be done without physical contact is ideal, and socially distanced as appropriate.” Spectators at these events also have rules to minimize risk. “There are regulations around spectators as well, limited to only two per athlete. The spectators should be masked, socially distanced, and staying home if they are not feeling well.”
We know that we can do this safely!
As for whether he has any advice for student athletes - Dr. Steven Schulz resuming sports, Dr. Schulz replied, “Some student athletes have been out of condition for a while. We can’t just jump in and expect you to do what you did a year or two ago, when you were training regularly.” He also mentioned, “There is going to be some buildup and it’s important to continue with stretching and following with coaches and trainers that are available to make sure you are doing everything in a safe way. Start small and build your stamina and endurance and your strength over time to prevent muscle injuries.”
With the effort the schools and students are putting in, there is data that reflects the reduced rates of COVID-19 in the area. “Schools have been successful in keeping Covid rates low,” Dr. Schulz says. “We recently just looked at the period from January 6th through the 22nd with the return of school, and the rate with orange zone testing in Monroe county schools was only 0.72%, compared to that of the population at 7.3%. We know that we can do this safely, and the hope now is that we can extend that to sports in addition to what the schools have been doing safely thus far.” What are risks that people should be aware of and how do they minimize those risks? As long as COVID-19 is still a factor, there are still risks to be on the lookout for when it comes to these high school sports.

In regard to student athletes who have gotten Covid after Dec 4th, Dr. Schulz explained they “should have an evaluation with their pediatrician or primary care physician to ensure that there are not any potential cardiac issues that would preclude them from returning to sports and that would prompt a more additional work up.” Dr. Schulz concluded, “It’s up to each person involved to do their part to maintain safety for everyone.”

“Great actions are not always true sons of great and mighty resolutions…”

THE ONLY WATER THAT SHOULD BE IN YOUR BASEMENT IS... BOB WATERS!
This is the season for great and mighty resolutions. We analyze the nature of our lives and the direction they are taking, and decide how we could make improvements. We resolve to do better, either by eliminating some habit that is unworthy of us or by developing a practice that will enrich our lives. Johnson tells us that we also may be inspired to great action by circumstance rather than by resolution. When an opportunity arises, we may rise to the occasion with acts that do us credit and without the benefit of planning or high resolve. Arrangements made prior to need may include the assurance that adequate financing will be available. Our entire staff wishes all of our friends a happy, healthy and prosperous new year.

CHALLENGES OF GOING REMOTE WITH YOUR BUSINESS CUSTOMER SERVICE: Ensuring customers can seamlessly connect with your business, and your customer service staff in particular, should be a priority when switching to a remote work setting. Remote customer service employees won’t have the direct access to management and fellow team members that they had when working on-site, so business owners can employ central management platforms that make it easy to access information regarding new products and services and previous interactions with and responses to customers. That access can help solve issues while reducing the likelihood of substantial lag time as customer service employees wait to hear from coworkers and managers about how to respond to certain issues.

FINDING WORK AFTER 50 Unemployment isn’t easy for anyone, regardless of their age. But unemployed men and women over 50 may find it especially difficult to find work. Whether it’s a byproduct of age-related discrimination or any of a host of additional variables, jobless older workers often struggle to find work. In a 2016 analysis of government figures, the Schwartz Center for Economic Policy Analysis at the New School estimated that the jobless rate for workers 55 and older in August of 2016, six years after the Great Recession, was nearly 9 percent. At the time, the national jobless rate hovered around 5 percent. Unemployed men and women over 50 who are struggling to find work can consider the following strategies as they look to rejoin the workforce. Revisit your résumé. Unemployed men and women over 50 have no doubt updated their résumés to reflect their most recent professional experience. But they may need to trim some of the fat in regard to their work life 10 or more years ago. Today’s hiring managers may only be concerned with recent experience that illustrates skillsets that are relevant to today’s jobs. Men and women over 50 may consider their experience from 20 years ago invaluable, but if that experience does not meet the specific needs of the jobs they’re now seeking, then they should remove it from their résumés so hiring managers can quickly access the more relevant information from their work histories. Embrace 21st century job hunting. Finding a job in the second decade of the 21st century is unlike job hunting in decades prior, and wholly different from how men and women over 50 looked for jobs upon beginning their professional lives. Networking can mean the difference between unemployment and landing a job. Go to job fairs attended by hiring managers and join professional organizations that host events where professionals in your field can gather. Turn your age into a positive. Men and women over 50 should accept the likelihood that their new managers and/or hiring managers will be younger than them. When interviewing for a job, men and women over 50 should make an effort to showcase their enthusiasm about working with and learning from younger colleagues, while also noting their desire to commit long-term to a company. Some hiring managers may surprise older applicants, viewing them as potentially more reliable than younger workers simply looking to gain some experience in a particular industry before moving on to the next opportunity. Make use of your existing down time. Another strategy unemployed men and women over 50 can try as they look for work is to make better use of their existing downtime. Enrolling in online courses can give prospective employers the impression that applicants over 50 are both tech-savvy and willing to learn new things. Each of those things can help men and women over 50 overcome any unjustified, tech-related stigmas that hiring managers may attach to older job candidates. Finding work after 50 is not always easy, and job seekers may need to adjust their approach before they can get back in the workforce. Page 41
