SPICING UP COLD-WEATHER DESSERTS WITH SPIRITS
Talk about a dessert that hits the spot -- especially as the weather turns chillier. You’ve heard of “pairing,” right? Well, in shaking up the concept’s traditional definition -- matching wines to dishes they most complement -innovative chefs are now using spirits like cognac to create even more tempting culinary experiences.
Cognac’s spicy and aromatic characteristics have always made for perfect drinking this time of year.

DatafromtheUnitedStatesDepartment of Justice indicates that partner violence accounted for 20 percent of all violent crime in the U.S. in 2018. The World Health Organization defines intimate partner violence as behavior within an intimate relationship that causes physical, sexual or psychological harm. Such violence can include acts of physical aggression, sexual coercion, psychological abuse, and controlling behaviors. Violence perpetrated by both current and former spouses and partners falls under the umbrella of intimate partner violence. Domestic violence is so prevalent that the National Network to End Domestic Violence reports that it fields more than 19,000 calls on a typical day. Anyone who is a victim of domestic violence or suspects a loved one or acquaintance is being abused is urged to call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233 (SAFE) or 1-800-7873224 (TTY) right away.
HOW TO AVOID THE COLD COMFORT OF A DRAFTY HOUSE
For those who live in older homes, the transition to colder weather can be extra disheartening, as the vision of expensive heating bills, chilly rooms and drafty windows dance in their heads. However, it’s easy to change the outlook fromcoldtocozywithafewsimple DIY solutions.
The most effective way to improve the comfort level in your home is to properly insulate. Insulation can beinadequateinolderhomes.Over time, it can settle and compact, creating gaps. Topping up attic insulation will help keep the warm air in, reducing heating bills and preventing stress on your furnace. For easy installation, homeowners andprofessionalsalikerecommend a stone wool batt insulation. For attics, aim for an r-value of R-50 or adepthof16inches.
A little preparation can go a long way to keep the cold at bay. Seal out drafts by replacing worn weatherstripping and caulking along windows, doors, baseboards, and trim. For other ways to beat the cold, consider inexpensive window insulation kits along with thicker drapes, and don’t forget to reverse ceiling fans to push warm air back down.
WAYS TO MAKE HOMES SAFER
Remove unnecessary items and furniture from rooms to free up more space to get around. Be sure there are no obstructions in walkways, entryways and near doors. Keep staircases clear at all times.

RESTORE RUSTY TOOLS
Many people may be tempted to discard rusty tools that have gone unused and sat in a garage or shed for a significant period of time. But tools encrusted with rust do not need to be relegated to the trash bin, nor do gardeners have to toil for hours scraping and sanding off the rust. There’s a much easier way to restore rusty tools that relies on a common household ingredient: vinegar. Pour vinegar into a deep enough vessel to submerge the metal part ofthetool.Soakthetoolovernight. The next day, use a scouring pad to rub off the rust. If the tool is too big to fit into a can or bucket, simply wrap it with a vinegarsoaked rag and cover the whole tool with a tightly secured plastic bag. Follow the same procedure the next day. After all the rust is gone, rinse the tool in cool water and dry thoroughly. Then return it to regular usage.

SIGNS COMMON INSECTS ARE INFESTING A LAWN
Chinch bugs: The experts at BobVila.com report that chinch bugs are not necessarily problematic when their populations are limited to around 10 to 15 bugs per square foot of lawn. In such instances, chinch bug populations are generally controlled by ants and ladybugs. However, extreme heat and drought, problems that have plagued various regions in North America in recent years, reduce the populations of bugs that feed on chinch bugs, thus increasing the population of these unwanted guests that feed on grass.GardenTech® indicates that damage from chinch bugs is most visible between June and September. That damage begins with grass taking on a purple tinge before it turns yellow and then brown after wilting.

DID YOU KNOW? According to the ASPCA, the number of dogs and cats euthanized in United States animal shelters has declined significantly since 2011. The ASPCA reports that approximately 1.5 million shelter animals are euthanized each year. That number is high, but it marks an improvement over 2011, when roughly 2.6 million dogs and cats were euthanized. The ASPCA credits part of this decline in euthanizations to an increase in animal adoptions and greater success at returning stray animals to their owners. Recent data indicates that roughly 3.2 million shelter animals are adopted each year, with a 50/50 split between dogs and cats. A greater emphasis on adoption can help reduce euthanization statistics even further.

Here’s a Tip
* When putting in new plants, you can tear strips of tin foil, then use toothpicks or small stakes to pin them to the ground in your new garden. It will keep the cats out, and can even discourage birds.
* “My kids are long past wagon size, but their wagon isn’t done hauling yet. I put it to good use in the garden. I can park it in the shed stocked with all the things I might need. It’s very handy.” -- A.A. in Florida
* To sharpen a pair of worn scissors, try cutting through a piece of aluminum foil that is doubled or tripled over. Be sure to clean and dry scissors you use in the kitchen.

I prefer winter and Fall, when you feel the bone structure of the landscape — the loneliness of it, the dead feeling of winter. Something waits beneath it, the whole story doesn’t show.

DID YOU KNOW? Spinal muscular atrophy, or SMA, is the most common cause of mortality in infants. According to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, SMA is a motor neuron disease that affects the central nervous system, peripheral nervous system and voluntary muscle movement. WebMD notes that the severity of SMA varies widely, but the disease is known to weaken muscles and can cause difficulty eating, breathing and walking. In the past, infants diagnosed with SMA typically did not survive more than two years, but the MDA notes that doctors now prefer to avoid making rigid predictions on life expectancy based strictly on age of onset.

Town Workers
Wing Woes in Western NY
Thank you to all the workers who put in the time and effort to keep our roads clean and safe when it’s snowing. Although we haven’t had much snow (yet) this year comparatively, the dedication is there and appreciated!
I left the PNW for [local region], lured by tales of legendary [chicken] wings. What a letdown! Here, in [location], I’ve faced nothing but one culinary catastrophe after another. [Other state]’s wings were a crispy, saucy revelation, but here, they’re as lackluster as a foggy day in Seattle. I’ve searched high and low in [local town], expecting each wing joint to redeem this city’s saucy honor. Instead, I’ve been met with wings that are to authentic [chicken] wings what instant coffee is to espresso— merely a shadow. They lack the crunch, the kick, the soul. The question nags at me: How can the home of the [chicken] wing serve up such pale imitations? I’m on a quest for that perfect bite, the one that transports me to wing nirvana, but alas, I find myself lost in a wilderness of wing disappointment. My plea is simple: Give me the fiery, the tangy, the transcendent wings I know exist somewhere in your midst.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH
By Keith Roach, M.D.
COVID Vaccines Do Not Increase the Risk of Cancer
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am looking for your opinion regarding the new COVID booster. I am not opposed to vaccinations, as I have had the initial two shots and one booster. About 18 months ago, I was diagnosed with prostate cancer and have since had my prostate removed. My current PSA readings are undetectable, for which I’m grateful. I was also diagnosed with melanoma 12 months ago (along with multiple basil spots). Biopsy results showed that all were successfully removed and were within positive margins, for which I’m also grateful.
I want to get the new COVID booster for obvious reasons, but I’m reading that the boosters are creating cancer recurrence (including prostate cancer and melanoma) in some patients. Clearly, I don’t want either to return, but I also don’t want to get COVID. Can you help with my dilemma and offer a recommendation? -- T.I.
ANSWER: I have also heard people making that claim, but it isn’t supported by evidence. Both the National Cancer Institute and the American Cancer Society agree that there is no evidence, nor a scientific reason, suggesting that COVID-19 vaccinations increase the risk of cancer growth, whether it was the first one or an additional one. (By the way, if you saw, like I did, the term “turbo cancer,” you can safely disregard the claim, since this isn’t a real entity. That’s fearmongering.)
The COVID vaccine, whether it’s an mRNA or a traditional vaccine (like the Novavax), is a very limited exposure of a critical protein in our immune system to help “teach” the immune system how to recognize a COVID infection. The vaccine provides pretty good protection against infections for a few months and excellent protection against severe infections (including hospitalization and death) for close to a year. Yearly vaccination seems like it might be reasonable, although public health experts have not decided on a longterm COVID vaccination plan.
People with cancer are particularly recommended to get vaccinated, since both cancer and its treatments may affect the immune system and make infections more serious. However, chemotherapy may affect the body’s ability to successfully react to the vaccine, so your oncologist can help you decide the optimal time to get the vaccine if you are undergoing chemo.

DOES MY IMPACTED TOOTH NEED TREATMENT?
An impacted tooth is an adult tooth that doesn’t emerge or only partially emerges. Wisdom teeth are the last to emerge and become impacted more frequently. Several issues can make a tooth become impacted in gum tissue or bone. Overcrowding may not allow another tooth to emerge, or the jawbone may be too small. Sometimes teeth twist and tilt as they try to emerge and become displaced. Many people routinely have wisdom teeth removed to avoid complications, but not all impacted teeth require removal. An impacted tooth can push on the adjacent tooth, which pushes on the next tooth, causing overcrowding and a misaligned bite. If the impacted tooth isn’t affecting surrounding teeth and gums, it may only require monitoring.
Whether you come to us for examination of your wisdom teeth,
cosmetic work, simple fillings, or complex restorations, any program we suggest for your dental health will be thoroughly discussed with you before we begin. When you are looking for state-of-the-art, personalized dentistry from people who really care, welcome to BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL. Our dental team works smoothly and efficiently together, devoted to making your dental experience comfortable as well as enhancing. Call us at 585.343.4246 for an appointment at 6 Batavia City Centre
P.S. If an impacted tooth is toward the front of the mouth, braces can sometimes be used to move the tooth into proper position.

EXPLORE HOSPICE OPTIONS FOR END-OF-LIFE CARE
Hospice care often begins when the individual receiving care and his or her family members feel the end of life may be near. According to Relias, a healthcare advisory organization, most patients enter hospice during the last six months of life. Care providers are interdisciplinary. Doctors, nurses, social service providers, bereavement therapists, dietitians, spiritual counselors, and physical or occupational therapists may be included in hospice treatment.

PAW’S CORNER
By Sam Mazzotta
“Youth is happy because it has the ability to see beauty. Anyone who keeps the ability to see beauty never grows old…” ~ Frank Kafka
Kafka was an Austrian writer who was only 40 years of age when he died in 1924. He may, therefore, have been overly enthusiastic about the advantages of youth. However, his thought merits attention.
If we develop the habit of looking for beauty in everything, we might be surprised at the various places where beauty manifests itself and how often we can find it. This may not keep us from growing old but it should at least make growing old more enjoyable.
Families of all faiths and creeds can be certain of fully appropriate services when they put their trust in us. Our many years of experience enable us to anticipate every need.
When Dog Walking is a Tug of War
DEAR PAW’S CORNER:
My dog Trey is a 3-year-old mixed breed, mostly Lab, who pulls at his leash every time we go out for a walk. I don’t want to use a choke collar, because it seems painful and counterproductive to punish him every time he tries to pull ahead. How can I get Trey to walk next to me and not tug all the time? -- Bill in New Orleans
DEAR BILL: Dogs love being outside and exploring. at’s a big reason why Trey is tugging at his leash -- he wants to run and explore everything in the world. But that’s not possible in the city. And for the sake of your leash-holding arm, getting Trey to relax is a big deal.
You’re probably saying, “Oh, this is where Sam tells us to reinforce basic obedience training.” And you’re right. It’s important for Trey to follow your commands, especially if he pulls the leash out of your hand. But that’s just one element to leash training a dog.
When you pull on the leash to slow Trey down, he will automatically pull in the opposite direction. is is a reflex action. e more you pull, the more they dig in.
So instead, try a misdirection-reward strategy. Give the command “heel” and have Trey walk calmly beside you, with the leash slack. Whenever he gets ahead of you (before the tug of war starts), stop and change direction. He’ll turn to go in the direction you’re heading, and when he does, give him lots of praise and maybe (at first) a little treat. Do this every time he tries to move ahead of you.
If Trey tends to pull really hard, change from a collar and leash to a chest harness. is prevents injury and can make it easier to control him.

FACTS ABOUT FEBRUARY
Despite being the shortest month of the calendar year, February has an interesting history. Early calendars marked the start of the new year in March, but when the second king of Rome, Numa Pompilius, rose to the throne in 713 BC, he synchronized the calendar to the lunar year. That required the addition of January and February.

is experience also ignited a passion to pursue a career in nutrition, and she earned a Bachelor’s degree in Nutrition and DieteticsfromBuffaloStateCollege.Walkeraimsforcertificationasa dietetic technician to bolster her own education and knowledge.
In her position at CCE Monroe and the USDA grant-funded SNAP-ED,Walkerloveshelpingpeople,meetingthemwheretheyare, to help them find ways to improve their health and lifestyle. She says people overwhelmingly enjoy learning practical ways to incorporate new foods and new ideas into their daily lives.
Walkergoestodifferentorganizations, schools, recreationcenters, and senior housing facilities, and teaches cooking classes, gives food demonstrations, and shares information about healthy eating and lifestyle choices across Monroe County, specifically low-income, food-insecure communities. Largely serving the city of Rochester and the county’s westside, Walker says the topics they focus on tend to be new to the audience, such as how to read nutrition labels and make active dietary choices when they can.
Walker keeps current with nutritional research and recommendations, and she acknowledges that changing research can be confusing, such as that on whether butter or margarine is better, or whether eggs are good for you or not. Walker encourages that most guidelines and recommendations should be individualized based on your specific dietary needs, your health history, your sensitivities, and even your stage of life. She says, “Everyone is different and needs different things with their nutrition.”
She says the common refrain is to eat more fruits and vegetables, preferably half of each meal, and preferably eating naturally colorful meals throughout the day and week. She loves sharing sessions on
current USDA MyPlate guidelines and recommendations with area youth and their families.
However, she says people should not completely avoid the less healthy choices altogether. “It’s okay to allow yourself to have a cookie now and then, it’s not a terrible thing, just not ten cookies at one time.”
It’sallaboutbalanceandhealthfulchoices.Olderpopulationswho were used to the previous food pyramid o en find the MyPlate visual easier to follow in real life, Walker adds.
ough Walker loves educating the array of ages, she particularly enjoys offering nutrition education classes within City of Rochester schools because students are o en eager to meet role models as much as they are eager to try new things.
She and her colleagues offer different curricula for different ages. For classes and sessions with youth and teens, Walker has interactive sessions with games related to food and healthy choices help concepts better resonate. She’ll visually measure out the sugar content in various sodas and juices to illustrate the concept instead of just telling participants about the sugar content. Participants practice making MyPlate meals and snacks to visualize the goal, and recent cooking classes such as at Cameron Ministries teach participants easy recipes they can immediately take home.
WalkerlovesworkingwiththeteamofnutritioneducatorsatCCE Monroe, with its welcoming, team-spirited work environment, and she loves building connections with different organizations, such as at farmers markets.
Laurencé Walker dedicates her career to spreading knowledge and practical advice on maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Drawing on personal experiences and academic expertise, she emphasizes the importance of individualized healthful dietary choices. With a commitment to ongoing learning and community engagement, she is dedicated to empowering others to make informed nutrition choices.

Why PlantPaper?
Replacing 10,000 rolls of conventional TP with PlantPaper means:
• Keeping 10,000 gallons of bleach out of our bodies and ecosystems.
• 2,000 square feet of single use plastic out of our landfills.
• 120,000 gallons of fresh water free from contamination.
• 750 trees kept in the ground.
PlantPaper is free of: bleach, formaldehyde, fragrance, dyes, BPA and microplastics
PlantPaper is made with 100% FSC-Certified bamboo. This certification ensures that bamboo is harvested from naturally occurring forests, not from monocrop plantations on previously clearcut lands.

DID YOU KNOW?
Nursing is one of the fastest-growing and longest-running occupations in the United States and Canada. The New England Hospital for Women and Children, established in 1862, was the first nursing school in the United States. The first formal nursing training program in Canada was established in 1874 at the General and Marine Hospital in St. Catharines, Ontario. The American Nurses Association was started in 1898. The CanadianNurses’Association, formerlytheCanadianNationalAssociation of Trained Nurses, was developed in 1907. These associations are national professional associations representing the hundreds of thousands of nurses across the country and are instrumental in legislative policy and the influences of health care on nursing professionals today.

EFFICIENCY AT WORK
Schedules can help professionals in much the same way that grocery lists help consumers at the grocery store. When visiting a grocery store without a shopping list, shoppers are bound to forget items, necessitating follow-up visits to the store, and waste time wondering what they need. Without schedules in an office environment, workers may allow time to idle away because there are no deadlines motivating them to complete projects.
