PLEASE Please don’t sit in your car using a handicap spot waiting for your person. It takes away from those who truly need it. You can drop them off in front of the store and then sit in the front and wait for them. You can see them come out. It’s okay as long as you stay in your car. It’s so hard for me and others truly walking disabled, especially coming out of the store after being on my feet to have to walk any distance whatsoever. And when I see people sitting in the closest handicap spots just upsets me. It’s bad enough we know that there’s people who truly don’t need a handicap spot. I know many of them who do lots of yard work very easily then have a handicap sticker.
Thank you I live in Henrietta and I want to thank the CHS Ambulance crew that helped me Saturday, January 27th around 5:00 PM. I am grateful not only for their knowledge and expertise, but how they treated me. They were both great. Thank you CHS. Thank you Thank you! On Thursday, Feb. 1, I ate lunch at a local restaurant in Clifton Springs. I had soup, sandwich, and coffee -- all delicious. When I asked for the bill, I was told it had been taken care of and I was all set. To whomever paid my bill, thank you! It was very thoughtful and much appreciated!

WHEN A ROOT CANAL IS NEEDED A root canal is used to treat and fill an advanced cavity and relieve pain from an infected or abscessed tooth. When a cavity goes untreated, bacteria can invade the tooth’s pulp and cause a painful infection. Pus may collect around the infected tooth, causing swelling and sensitivity. If the pus doesn’t drain properly, it can lead to swelling in the face and jaw. Tooth sensitivity, discoloration, a loose tooth, and constant pain are all signs that a root canal is needed. During a root canal, the tooth’s infected pulp is removed, and the empty space is cleaned and filled. Most root canal procedures require two visits: the first to remove decay and the second to install a crown. Root canal therapy may have had a bad reputation in the past as being painful; however, as most anyone who
has experienced this procedure can attest, today’s techniques make root canal a virtually painless, effective treatment. If you are experiencing pain or have unusual symptoms, call your dentist. Be aware of threats to your health, and take steps to prevent problems from occurring in the first place. If you don’t have a family dentist at this time, we invite your call at BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, 585.343.4246. You’ll find our full service dental practice at 6 Batavia City Centre. P.S. Getting a root canal is not painful, and many people find, once the anesthesia wears off, that removing the infection provides immediate relief from previous pain.

typical atrial flutter two years ago, but I haven’t had any symptoms that I am aware of. I don’t have a history of heart problems. My heart rate was 117 bpm while experiencing atrial flutter. My cardiologist recommended an ablation, as that can be curative. He specializes in electrophysiology. The ablation was successful, and my heart rate was in the low 60s afterward. Six months ago, atrial fibrillation (AFib) showed up, but again, there weren’t any real symptoms for me. My heart rate is nice and low, and I never really feel any problems ... perhaps some fatigue. But at 67, I can’t always distinguish this from the feeling of getting older. I’m on Xarelto and a low dose of carvedilol. My blood pressure is good. Is it worth having an ablation of the pulmonary veins to try and stop AFib? Or is it better to just live with an irregular heartbeat? Apparently, it’s best to have an ablation sooner rather than later, so I’ll need to decide as soon as possible. -- D.S. ANSWER: Atrial flutter is an abnormally fast heart rhythm that starts in one of the top chambers of the heart, usually the right atrium. The heart rate in the atria is very fast, typically 240-300 bpm, which is faster than any adult heart can beat. It is common that every other impulse in the atria gets transmitted to the ventricle, so a pulse rate in the range of 120-150 bpm would be typical. Catheter ablation prevents the progression of the fast impulse to the rest of the heart, and it is successful 65% to 100% of the time in various studies. Unfortunately, studies have also shown that somewhere between 7% and 44% of those who had a successful catheter ablation for atrial flutter will later have a recurrence -- or more commonly develop AFib. This is called a chaotic arrythmia and can cause a fast heart rate, but more importantly, the lack of coordinated heart contractions in the atria can predispose people to the development of a clot in the atrium. The clot can then float downstream where it can lodge and cause damage, specifically a stroke. Each year, a percentage of 5% of people with AFib will develop a stroke without treatment. Treatment is designed to relieve symptoms and reduce stroke risk -- your cardiologist has already achieved both of these aims pretty well. The carvedilol is a beta blocker that helps keep the heart rate under control, and Xarelto is effective at reducing stroke risk. In my opinion, there isn’t a need to consider another treatment like an ablation, which has a small but real potential for serious side effects. In fact, it is not 100% effective; about 70% to 75% of patients are symptom-free a year after the procedure. Many people need to continue anticoagulants like Xarelto even after a successful catheter ablation. I recommend ablation for people who cannot tolerate medication treatment for their symptoms.

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On Feb. 15, 1965, in accordance with a formal proclamation by Queen Elizabeth II of England, a new Canadian national flag is raised in Ottawa, the capital of Canada. The search for a new national flag began in 1925.
Serves 10 to 12 Amaretti Base 5 ounces amaretti 1/2 stick (4 tablespoons) unsalted butter 5 tablespoons sugar Cardamom Truffle Filling 2 1/3 cups heavy cream 4 to 6 green cardamom pods, lightly bruised to open them 25 ounces dark chocolate (60-70% cocoa solids), grated 1/2 stick (4 tablespoons) unsalted butter, cubed 4 tablespoons chocolate liqueur Cardamom Cocoa Sugar 3 green cardamom pods 1/4 cup sugar 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa 1 10-inch cake pan with a removable base, base and sides lined with nonstick parchment paper To make the amaretti base, finely crush the amaretti in a food processor or put them in a plastic bag and crush with a rolling pin. Melt the butter and sugar in a pan over low heat, then stir in the amaretti crumbs. Press the mixture evenly over the base of the prepared cake pan and refrigerate for 20 minutes. To make the cardamom truffle filling, put the cream and cardamom pods in a pan and heat until almost boiling. Remove from the heat and set aside to infuse for 20 minutes. Meanwhile, put the chocolate and butter in a saucepan. Strain the infused cream through a fine strainer onto the chocolate (the cream will be warm enough to melt the chocolate). If it doesn’t melt, warm over very low heat, stirring occasionally, but do not allow to boil. Stir in the liqueur, then set aside until almost cold, but not set. With an electric mixer, beat the chocolate mixture for a couple of minutes - this will give the cake a lovely airy texture. Pour onto the amaretti base. Let cool, then cover and refrigerate for at least 6 hours, or up to 48 hours before serving. To make the cardamom cocoa sugar, remove the black seeds from the papery cardamom pods and put the seeds in a spice grinder with the sugar and cocoa. Grind to a powder. Carefully remove the cake from the pan and peel off the lining paper. Set on a chilled serving plate and sift the cardamom cocoa sugar evenly over the top. Serve immediately, cut into very thin slices.

Cultivating Art, Culture, and Community: The Visionary Leadership of Gregory Hallock BY SUZIE WELLS
“I
f you take ART out of EARTH, you get EH.” In the realm where art meets community, Gregory Hallock, Executive Director of the Genesee-Orleans Regional Arts Council (GOArt), has become a driving force behind the development of a cultural hub that showcases art in all forms and intertwines it with the rich tapestry of diverse cultures. Hallock bubbles with pride talking about the center. He says, “I love what I do. When I talk to kids nowadays and ask about their dream jobs, they’re so surprised that there is a dream job. I live my dream job. I love making art happen.” Hallock’s journey into the world of arts and culture is fueled by a deep-seated love for his work. A firm believer that everyone should have access to transformative cultural experiences, he tirelessly seeks out opportunities and secures grants to bring a wide array of artists to Western New York. His dedication stems from a desire to share the intrinsic joy of experiencing ballets, theater, and other cultural events with as many people as possible. Raised in Delvin, NY, Hallock cherishes the small-town atmosphere of Western NY, where he believes he can make a more significant impact than in the bustling arts and culture scene of New York City. Balancing the charm of small-town living with a commitment to exposing his own children and the community to diverse arts and cultures, Hallock exemplifies the fusion of tradition and innovation. Hallock’s personal and professional ethos intertwine seamlessly. His role as a father is as crucial to him as his official responsibilities. Growing up in a family that embraced diversity, he aims to instill the same values in his adopted children, ensuring they connect with their respective Puerto Rican and Dominican roots while exploring a multitude of cultures. A proponent of travel as an educational experience, Hallock emphasizes the importance of learning beyond textbooks. Having studied abroad and traveled extensively, he advocates for exposing children to various cultures through travel. Hallock embarks with his family on an annual cross-country road trip, immersing themselves in the cultural fabric of each state, creating memories to last a lifetime. An Eagle Scout and a lifelong volunteer, Hallock’s dedication to giving back is ingrained in his character. While his role as the Director of GOArt prevents direct involvement in Batavia’s Pride Center he helped create, he remains actively engaged in volunteer work with Batavia’s Historic Preservation Commission and Shea’s Performing Arts Center.
through dance. She then created a musical about her own life story and performed it at Shea’s. When asked what role arts and creative expression play in culture, Hallock offers a resounding, Gregory with his kids “Everything,” explaining that from the moment we wake up in the morning with alarm clocks created by humans, dressing in clothes designed by humans and selected by us for a day based on our mood, the day’s plans, etc. From architecture and design of every building, furniture piece, landscaping, food, beverage, light displays, car designs – “everything that puts a smile on your face” – that’s art, Hallock says. Humans need to create and experience art. It’s integral to our emotional well-being. We must do what makes us happy, what recharges us, and that’s often art. He cites art therapy used in hospitals, children’s programs, and mental health facilities, as well as theater/film and paint & sip classes at which we can escape challenges of our own lives and slip into another mode. We need art, he says. “I don’t know how we would exist as a world without it. That’s why it works for me. We can’t escape it.” The community’s overwhelming support for GOArt reflects Hallock’s successful efforts in building a thriving cultural center. With over 100 events annually, GOArt includes a performance space, a library, a music recording studio, a dance studio, a culinary kitchen, multiple galleries, a working bar dating back to the building’s men’s club days, as well as “the coolest bathrooms all around the world,” Hallock says. The organization has grown so much and the building is historic, so when they ran out of room but had more ideas to expand, they had to dig down. They’re now raising the building slowly to add another level for a pottery studio, woodworking space, another gallery, hopefully a bakery, and hopefully a coffee shop as well as storage space and space to expand as ideas flow. Gregory Hallock’s unwavering commitment to enriching the community through arts and culture extends beyond the walls of GOArt, shaping the cultural landscape of Western New York and leaving an indelible mark on the hearts and minds of those who have experienced the transformative power of art and diversity under his leadership.
Hallock’s favorite moments have included witnessing artists’ growth in their craft, or in watching cultural projects flourish. He recounts stories of artists like Gaitrie Subryan of Devi Bollywood Dance in Buffalo, who, through a NYS Create grant, came to GOArt and collaborated with students to express their own stories

Trip over love, you can get up. Fall in love and you fall forever. ~Author Unknown
“The best way to make your dreams come true is to wake up…” ~ J. M. Power What a dreary world it would be if we had no dreams of the things to which we aspire. It is our dreams that shape our goals. We imagine the situations that would make us happy, then direct our efforts toward making those dreams come true. The important thing is that we recognize that achievement is a two part program. First, we dream of the goals we desire. Then we work as hard as we can to make those dreams come true. Unless we wake up and put part two into effect, our dreams are worthless. Our years of experience enables us to provide funerals that are beautiful as well as comforting. You can safely place your trust in us.

HOW AGING ADULTS CAN MAINTAIN THEIR MENTAL ACUITY Aging is associated with or linked to a host of mental and physical side effects. For example, many adults expect their vision to deteriorate as they grow older. Such a side effect can be combatted with routine eye examinations that may indicate a need for a stronger eyeglass prescription, a relatively simple solution that won’t impact adults’ daily lives much at all. While physical side effects like diminished vision might not strike much fear in the hearts of aging men and women, those same people may be concerned and/or frightened by the notion of age-related cognitive decline. Some immediately associate such decline with Alzheimer’s disease, an irreversible, progressive brain disorder that gradually destroys memory and cognitive skills, ultimately compromising a person’s ability to perform even the simplest of tasks. But age-related cognitive decline is not always symptomatic of Alzheimer’s disease. Learning about Alzheimer’s and how to maintain mental acuity can help aging men and women better understand the changes their brains might be undergoing as they near or pass retirement age.

Here’s a Tip
* To get a really good shine on your windows, try using newspaper instead of a paper towel. Spray the window with your cleaner and just use the paper like a towel. Practically no lint! * “We save the bread ends and any too-hard or molding bread in our freezer until we can get down to the lake and feed the birds and fish. The ducks especially love it.” -- E.F. in Wisconsin * Drop a couple of crackers (saltines) in your sugar canister if you have problems with clumping. The crackers will keep it from clumping. Just remember they are there if you dip a measuring cup in the canister. You don’t want a bunch of cracker crumbs in your sweet recipe! DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My cat, Buster, has been scratching under his chin for days, and the skin underneath the fur there is getting raw. What is causing this, and how do I stop the scratching and treat the injured skin? -- David G., Buffalo, New York DEAR DAVID: It’s clear that something is aggravating your cat and causing him to scratch in just one spot. The problem could be dry skin -- not unusual for pets or humans in the middle of winter -- or allergies. It may also be an infection, a parasite (mites or ringworm) or an allergic reaction to fleas. If the area that Buster is scratching is not infected, you can try a few home remedies to try to relieve the itching. Oatmeal, cooked and then cooled, is one option. Plain yogurt is another. And coconut oil may help moisturize and protect the skin. Dab one of these gently onto the itchy area. (Just a very thin coat; don’t pile it on.) Repeat as needed. If fleas are an issue, treat both your cat and your home to reduce and eliminate these little pests. Vacuum carpets thoroughly. Sweep all the corners and underneath furniture to remove dust bunnies, where fleas and their eggs can hide. If these remedies don’t work within a couple of days, or if your cat exhibits signs of infection or illness, contact the veterinarian. They need to take a look and see what exactly is causing the itching. They’ll also have medication on hand to combat the itch (hydrocortisone, for one) and treat infection. If Buster is scratching compulsively, they may put him into an E-collar (aka the “Cone of Shame”) for a few days to let the spot heal fully. (c) 2024 King Features Synd., Inc.

GET A HANDLE ON WORK-RELATED STRESS R u s h -H en r i etta Cen tr a lSc h o o lD i s tr i c t I s H i r i n g ...
Speak up about your stress. As noted, stress at the workplace can affect workers’ performance, which employers are looking to optimize. Workers can speak to their employers if they feel their work environments are conducive to stress. Work in tandem with an employer to develop time-saving strategies that make it easier to get work done on time. Supervisors may encourage employees to delegate more often, freeing up time to get their work done. Employers may also direct employees to wellness resources that can help them more effectively combat stress. The outcomes of such discussions may never be known if workers never take the initiative and speak up about their stress.
