* Yard sales sponsored by churches and other charities can be a great source of bargains, especially at this time of year. Since they are a fundraiser, usually with donated items, they are motivated to sell, even if it’s at a lower price. Oftentimes you can get items that still have tags, which make great gifts. * “If your toothpaste is almost done, just snip off the top and dip your brush in the container. There’s usually more in the tube.” -- T.D. in Kentucky * If someone has written on your dry erase board with a permanent marker, try writing over it with a dry erase marker. Sometimes this works to remove the permanent marker.

Do you have HEEL pain or ARCH pain? HEEL SPUR SYNDROME/PLANTAR FASCIITIS is a common problem among people who are active. It starts as a dull intermittent pain in the heel and progresses to a sharp persistent pain. Classically, it is worse in the morning with the first few steps, after sitting, after standing or after walking. • Plantar fasciitis often begins with irritation and tearing of the fibrous band of tissue on the bottom of the foot, which may eventually result in the formation of a heel spur. • Contributing factors: Flat pronated feet, high arched feet, poor shoe support, increase age, sudden weight increase, increased activity level, family tendency. • 95% of our patients’ symptoms are resolved with conservative treatment, avoiding surgical intervention. • We also offer surgical procedures with the best post op success rates using Endoscopic Plantar Fasciotomy techniques (minimal incisions and scarring; often back in a shoe in 1 week).

CPAP Could Help With Sleep Apnea --DEAR DR. ROACH: How are sleep apnea, sighing and heart failure related? Recently, I was told that I have severe sleep apnea and that I must use a CPAP machine. I have noticed that during the day I frequently take a spontaneous deep breath. Is that sleep apnea while awake? I have coronary heart disease and have three stents. Will the CPAP machine help me in any way? -- A.P. ANSWER: It’s complicated. By far, the most common type of sleep apnea is obstructive sleep apnea. This happens in people who are overweight, or in people whose neck anatomy predisposes them to the condition. During sleep, the upper airway collapses, preventing proper inspiration. This can be noticed by a sleep partner as choking, gasping or just not breathing for a prolonged time. The person eventually will wake up enough, due to lack of oxygen, to be able to take in a good breath, but will then fall back asleep. The process may happen hundreds of times a night, with the person often unaware. Sleepiness during the day (from never sleeping properly at night) and snoring are the most common symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea. A CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) machine, which uses high pressure to keep the airway open, is the most common initial treatment for obstructive sleep apnea. In severe sleep apnea, the oxygen level in the blood can be so low for so long that the heart and lungs can be damaged, eventually leading to a type of heart failure of the right side of the heart. However, the situation is even more complex. People who have other kinds of heart failure, such as from repeated heart attacks, can develop the less common form of sleep apnea, central sleep apnea. Although this also may be treated by CPAP, it is critical to treat the underlying heart failure as well. Your doctor can tell you whether you have central or obstructive sleep apnea. Spontaneous deep breaths (sighs) are a part of normal human physiology. Sighs have several purposes, but the most important is to help keep the lungs properly expanded. Sighs might be more common in people with heart failure, but I do not know of any correlation with sleep apnea. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: Are deodorants containing aluminum safe to use? The brands that do not contain aluminum are much less effective. I am concerned about absorbing the aluminum from the deodorant and its effect on the brain. -- D.M. ANSWER: That’s a myth. The amount of aluminum in antiperspirants is negligible. Deodorants that aren’t also antiperspirants don’t contain aluminum. The aluminum mechanically blocks the sweat glands in the armpit, and 99.99% of it is not absorbed into the body. Longterm studies of people taking aluminum-based antacid (which is also poorly absorbed) have shown no increased risk of dementia. The body has several ways of removing the small amounts of aluminum we absorb, mostly via the kidneys. Aluminum toxicity IS a potential problem for people with kidney disease on dialysis, but the small amounts of aluminum in antiperspirants is too small to worry about even in those cases. There is absolutely no reason to be concerned about the health effects of aluminum on the brain. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. DON’T AVOID FLUORIDE There has been a surge in natural tooth cleaning products hitting the shelves lately, and while there is nothing wrong with going the chemical-free route, most natural dental products lack fluoride, a naturally occurring mineral that is safe and effective at fighting cavities. Avoiding fluoride could lead to problems. Fluoride already resides in the foods we consume, and additional amounts have been added to almost all of America’s drinking water. In fact, after adding fluoride to the water in Grand Rapids, Michigan, tooth decay in children dropped by over 60 percent. Fluoride strengthens tooth enamel and helps to avoid tooth decay, both of which are important in children as well as older adults.
decay and periodontal disease. This can include a healthy diet, fluoride treatments, conscientious brushing and flossing, and periodic professional cleanings and exams. Research repeatedly demonstrates that those people who own better dental health live longer, stay healthier longer, and enjoy a better life. If you’d like to maximize your oral health, thereby enhancing every day of your life, why not call BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, 6 Batavia City Centre, for an appointment? PH: 585.343.4246.
No referrals needed for most insurances. NATURAL WAYS TO FIGHT FALL ALLERGIES Wear a mask. When doing housework or yard work, wear a mask to reduce the inhalation of specific allergens.
P.S. If you are using a natural toothpaste that does not contain fluoride, consider using a fluoride rinse after brushing. You can also ask your dentist about extra fluoride treatments.

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles Social Security Increase for 2021 The news is out. Our Social Security benefit increase starting in January 2021 will be less than it was for 2020. Instead of the 1.6% increase we received this year, they're cutting us back to 1.3% for Social Security benefits and Supplemental Security Income. For the average recipient, this comes to a whopping $20 per month. The average benefit will be $1,543 per month and $2,596 for a couple. The retirement earnings test exempt amount will change in 2021 as well. If you're not yet at full retirement age, the annual exempt amount will be $18,960 per year. During the first year you reach full retirement age, the limit will be $50,520 per year (before the month you reach that age). The way this is supposed to work is that when the annual inflation rate goes down, our cost of living adjustment also goes down. We allegedly don't need as much money to get through the month. (Although the cost of our groceries has gone up, the price of gas has gone down because no one is going anywhere now.) The Senior Citizens League guesstimated correctly a few months ago that our increase would be 1.3% -- the second lowest increase ever. Meanwhile our Medicare Part B premium continues to climb. The good news there is the "hold harmless" clause in the regulations. If the Medicare premium rises enough that it overtakes our Social Security increase, the dollar amount of the Part B premium will be reduced so we don't end up with fewer Social Security dollars than we received this year. This applies to most but not all of us. Keep an eye on the Senior Citizens League (seniorsleague.org). They fight for us when it comes to drug costs, veterans benefits, Medicare, Social Security and more. They're in Alexandria, Virginia, right across the river from Washington, D.C., and the halls of Congress.

Recognize that more than food is available for takeout. In response to the COVID-19 outbreak, Governor Andrew Cuomo of New York announced relaxations on laws governing what can and cannot be obtained via takeout, allowing takeout on goods that were previously restricted in regard to takeout. For example, Cuomo announced that the New York State Liquor Authority intended to temporarily relax regulations regarding the takeout and delivery of alcohol. Utilizing such services can be a great way to support local businesses while still adhering to recommendations designed to slow the spread of COVID-19.

TECH TO TAKE ALONG ON YOUR NEXT ROAD TRIP Road trips hold a special place in many people’s hearts. The open road and the freedoms it represents have been romanticized by writers and travelers since automobiles became accessible to the masses. While many drivers still take to the road looking for adventure, road trips have changed considerably since Jack Kerouac penned his seminal novel “On the Road” in the 1950s. The spirit of the open road is still there, but the way travelers approach road trips has changed considerably, most notably with regard to the technology that motorists now take along for the ride. Drivers about to embark on a road trip, whether it’s their first such venture or their fiftieth, can make trips even more enjoyable by taking along the right tech.

Refrigerators that inform their owners when it’s time to buy more eggs and thermostats that learn homeowners’ heating and cooling preferences may once have seemed like futuristic ideas straight out of a sci-fi movie. However, such products are no longer a dream but a reality. The term “smart home” refers to a residence that has appliances, HVAC, lighting, entertainment systems, security, and many more devices that communicate with one another. Such devices can be controlled remotely, according to SmartHomeUSA, an automation product retailer. Proponents of smart home technology say features can help people save money on utilities and conserve natural resources, all the while providing peace of mind to homeowners. In 2016, 80 million smart home devices were delivered worldwide. That marks a 64 percent increase from 2015, according to the research data firm IHS Markit. The smart home trend is only expected to grow in coming years. Although there’s interest in smart home technology, the industry remains fragmented. Consumers are trying to figure out which devices are simply fun and which provide practical benefits. Furthermore, the range of smart devices is expanding rapidly, making potential compatability issues a concern. Companies that plan to educate consumers further about the advantages of smart home features and are open to standardization may have the best chances of survival. Smart technology is taking over and is likely to continue changing the way people live and work.

LeRoy Principal Tim McArdle Talks Education, COVID & Hometown Pride BY AMANDA DUDEK
T
here are times when a principal, a school and its community come together in a perfect match. That certainly seems to be the case with LeRoy Jr.-Sr. High School Principal Tim McArdle. Eight years ago, McArdle and LeRoy found each other, and what an exciting journey it has been! McArdle began his career in education as a Physical Education and Health teacher in New York’s Southern Tier before taking a middle school position with Honeoye Falls-Lima. While teaching there, he completed his school administration degree and became the Dean of Students. McArdle then spent four years as Assistant Middle School Principal in Batavia. In 2009, Tim McArdle and his wife, Vicki along with their four children – Liam, Avalyn, Keegan and Violet, moved to nearby Caledonia, Vicki’s hometown. When a position opened up in LeRoy, McArdle leapt at the opportunity, a decision which has become the source of what McArdle refers to as a “fun rivalry” between himself and the other members of his family which, he notes, outnumber him. “There are so many great things that happen in LeRoy, from our two school campuses to our local businesses to the Oatka Fest,” said McArdle. “People take care of each other here, and we have a very caring and empathetic community. Whether it is shown by the Rotary Kitchen or what our students do for the community, it is that ‘Knights Serve’ mentality, and it is so inspiring!” The LeRoy community quickly embraced Principal McArdle eight years ago. “I am a high energy, high octane guy, and they loved that energy and welcomed me with open arms,” recalled McArdle. “I relished the challenge of being a 7-12 grade principal in a community with such high expectations. My experience has prepared me to capitalize on the solid foundation that was set before I arrived, work hard to create something very special, and lead the school to new heights. It has been a wonderful experience.” The ties between LeRoy’s schools and its community remain close. “LeRoy is a town of immense pride and passion,” he explained. “Many residents are also alumni, and now their kids and grandkids are in school here. They are proud of their school with a hometown pride that runs deep in LeRoy,” he added. “Right through the Oatka Creek.”
Tim McArdle proudly snaps a photo with LeRoy’s Class of 2020!
While COVID-19 certainly brought with it new complexities for education, McArdle believes LeRoy is rising to the challenge. “As a school, we have been constantly looking in the mirror as far as how our hybrid model is going, making sure what we are doing is working and remaining flexible and fluid. Our goal has been to continue to foster a great presence with the community. Our mantra has been to keep that important connection going in a socially distant and safe manner.” According to McArdle, students, teachers, staff and parents have all played a role in successfully navigating COVID waters. “I am so proud of everyone for learning how to be safe and executing what they have learned,” he said. “Our unbelievably dedicated team as well as our town and village leadership have been working so hard to

keep our case numbers down while still keeping life moving. I can’t emphasize enough how proud I am of our teachers, their dedication and long hours, as we redefine education in real time.” Although the process may have changed, education remains the same. “School is all about connections,” shared McArdle. “The connection in our community has helped us to be strong during this time. For example, we created a special livestream event to carry on our beloved homecoming traditions at Hartwood Park this year. Our students still brought with them the same pride and school spirit they always do during the week. As a school, we will never just settle for good; we will always strive to be great, to produce graduates who are ready for success wherever the next chapter of their lives takes them.” McArdle traces his ongoing passion for education to his father. “My dad was my high school principal who went on to be superintendent,” he explained. “He was all about leadership with a heart, and it is an honor to carry on my dad’s legacy.”

Graduation gives a glimpse of McArdle’s heart for his students. “It doesn’t get much better than Graduation Day,” he said. “I very much enjoy supporting our students, and this is the culmination of all those years, of all that we have poured into them. It is sad to see our Knights leave, but we have invested so much in these kids, and this graduation launching pad is the beginning of so many new adventures. I love that day so much, and I can’t wait to see what our students are going to do next, but we always remind them, once a Knight, always a Knight!” Reflecting on his time at LeRoy, McArdle was filled with gratitude. “I am so appreciative of the support we constantly receive from our entire school community,” he said. “It sets us apart and fuels our success. Serving as principal has been a labor of love for me, and I do not take it lightly. It is magical to be a part of our community, and I am proud to wear the red and black!”

Attention
Genesee County Veterans Soon the Western New York Veterans National Cemetery in Pembroke will begin taking veterans for burial. The Joint Veterans Honor Guard of Genesee County, along with other honor guards from across the region, will be helping in providing honors for these fallen heroes. In addition, the JVHG will continue to provide honors for veteran burials in local cemeteries. This takes members to provide this vital service to the families of these deceased veterans. Recently, our organization has been hit hard by a combination of members “aging out,” medical issues, relocations, deaths, etc. This has left us short of people at times. But, we are determined to continue on with our mission. This is our 13th year providing this needed service to the veterans’ families of this area. We have provided honors for nearly 600 funerals during that time. However, it is getting more difficult to meet what we consider our sacred obligation. We are calling upon the veterans of Genesee County for help. We need individual veterans to step forward and serve once again.
I cannot write of things which even impassioned breath cannot utter. Autumn is coming with its days of gold, its days of reverie and of you—oh, such delightful hours that my heart burns within me at the anticipation.
We accept any veteran regardless of age, employment status, gender, branch or period of service, or veterans service organization membership. If you honorably served and can donate some time we could use your help. There are no fees or dues - just commitment to serve.

A Kind Gesture Goes a Long Way A few weeks back, my husband dropped his vehicle off for some work. Just prior to the business closing, they contacted him and stated they lost his keys, and the work did not get performed. As you can imagine, he was very upset. The next morning, we went to pick up his vehicle with our extra set of keys. (The business did offer to replace the key.) Later that afternoon, a kind and very thoughtful person knocked at our door with the paperwork and keys. We thanked him several times, but I wanted to share this story, because there are wonderful people out there, and they do make a lasting impression on others. He could have simply dropped them off to the place of
service, but he knew that key fobs are very pricey to replace. You went above and beyond! Thank you for renewing my hope in the human race.
Bad Driveway Recently, I had my driveway black topped. Before it was started, I asked the owner, who came out and gave me the estimate, if it was going to be a smooth finish. He assured me it would be. After I got it done, it was not a smooth finish. You can see all the stones almost as if it wasn’t rolled enough. It had a couple holes in it, and now there’s even grass growing up through it. The driveway is not even close to being level or a pitch away from my garage. I also said I didn’t want any rain coming into it and again was assured it would not happen. Guess what? I’m getting a lot of water into my garage now. Also, when they were rolling the driveway close to my garage, they damaged the trim and left. Now, they won’t fix that either.
To Daycamper In response to your annoyance with “noisy” neighbors who are bothering you with lawn mowing, power tools, etc.: Did it occur to you that the reason your neighbors are so noisy is because they can’t go anywhere! Due to Covid-19, everyone was stuck at home all summer for the most part. There were no vacations or festivals or carnivals or any kind of entertainment available the entire summer. I know we took advantage of the home time by doing home improvement projects and so on, and I’m sure we were probably noisy, as well. You can’t fault your neighbors for living their lives. Perhaps if you are so bothered by neighbors, you should consider relocating to the country away from all those annoying people.

Pleasant Surprise To the person who was at the Canandaigua McDonald’s drive through on Friday, October 23 at 4:45pm. What a pleasant surprise when we were told you paid for our order. Thank you for your kindness.
I agree! To the person who responded to Daycamper who complained about noise: I wholeheartedly agree with your logical comments. What gives lately? Neighbors complaining about noise.... having something to say about music and everything else. They need to wake up and smell the roses and stop pointing a finger. They need to get a life or move in the country where they will only be able to hear their own noise. I feel sorry for people like that who are apparently so lonely and unhappy that they have nothing better to do than to complain about trivial matters.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’m driving from New York to Colorado for a long-term contract job, and my two dogs will be coming with me. My roommate in New York is flying with my cat about a week later, because I don’t think my cat will do well on a long car trip (and I’m worried about her escaping). Are there any restrictions on pets traveling by plane or staying in hotels at this time? -- Beth G., Brooklyn DEAR BETH: It sounds like you’re doing your planning well in advance, and that’s great. Your dogs should be secured in the car while you’re traveling. Depending on their size and the type of car, they can be placed in a large kennel cage in the cargo area (with comfy beds, chew toys and access to water). Or they can stretch out on the back seat -- use a restraint device designed to keep dogs from sliding around the car or escaping from the vehicle. Many hotels are pet-friendly and have modified their cleaning procedures so that the hotel rooms will be clean and ready for the next guest. And more good news: Your friend and your cat can probably travel together in the airline cabin, as long as your cat is in a carrier (hard or soft sided) that will fit underneath the seat in front of your friend. (Some airlines are no longer shipping pets in the cargo area due to the disrupted flight schedules.) Book the airline seat with a pet option as soon as possible. Airlines allow a limited number of pets to travel in the cabin, even in a carrier. Those slots may fill up fast. Likewise for hotels: Book the rooms as soon as possible so that you know a pet-friendly room is waiting for you and your dogs.

GET A HANDLE ON WORK-RELATED STRESS
Bubba’s Landscape
Take more time off. According to the “State of American Vacation 2016” report from Project: Time Off, American workers failed to use 658 million vacation days in 2015. Vacation is not just a time to get away, but a valuable, effective way for workers to recharge. The APA notes that avoiding the negative effects of chronic stress and burnout requires workers to take time away to replenish and return to their pre-stress level of functioning. Taking time off to disconnect from work and avoid thinking about work can be just what workers need to overcome their work-related stress. And plenty of workers have the time to take off; they just need to take it.

Figures from the U.S. Census Bureau indicates that the average worker spent 26 minutes traveling to work, the most recent year for which the USCB has data. That marks a nearly 20 percent increase in average commute time since 1980. Things aren’t much better in Canada, where the National Household Survey found that the average commuter spends just over 25 minutes traveling to work each day. People who commute via public transportation can use the time they spend going to and from the office to answer emails, review schedules or even work on projects. Commuters who drive themselves to work can consider switching to public transportation or, if possible, move closer to their offices so they spend less time sitting in their vehicles, where they have no choice but to be unproductive.
