DON’T CALL IT “PATTY’S” DAY
Classifieds ____________________42
St. Patrick’s Day is a time for celebration. Celebrants look forward to the festivities every March. In this time-starved society, brevity in writing and conversation has become par for the course. So in their hurried text messages, posts and tweets, people unknowingly may refer to St. Patrick’s Day in a shortened, albeit incorrect, manner. According to experts on Irish culture, the shortened “Paddy,” and not “Patty,” should be used when referring to St. Patrick’s Day. Paddy is derived from the Irish name “Pádraig,” which is the equivalent of the English “Patrick.” “Patty” is actually a shortened form of Patricia, which happens to be a woman’s name. One individual has gone on his own personal crusade to correct people around the world as to the correct way to refer to St. Patrick’s Day, should the name need to be shortened. Marcus Campbell has copyrighted the website PaddynotPatty.com to inform people why “Paddy” is the correct way to shorten the name. Campbell goes on to state that Paddy, Pat, Packie, Podge, Pád, and Pod are all perfectly acceptable substitutions for Patrick. Just steer clear of Patty. It is important to point out that some people are offended by the name “Paddy,” which has been used in the past as a derogatory name for persons of Irish descent. However, there are many who still stick to the facts that Paddy has long been used as a nickname or term of endearment for Pádraig or Patrick. Whether one prefers to call it St. Patrick’s Day or Paddy’s Day, it’s best to steer clear of using Patty in any reference to Ireland’s patron saint.

SNAKES AND ST. PATRICK
Miller Brothers
BUILDERS Complete Carpentry Service Daniel 585-409-3193
For many years, one of the prevailing stories about St. Patrick involved the patron saint of Ireland driving snakes out of the Emerald Isle. Today, visitors to Ireland likely won’t see a snake while traversing the country’s rolling green hills or idyllic countryside. However, that absence of snakes has little to do with St. Patrick and more to do with geography. According to History.com, water has surrounded Ireland since the end of the last glacial period. That water has kept snakes out of the country. And prior to that most recent glacial period, Ireland was covered in ice, making the country uninhabitable for cold-blooded creatures, including snakes. The story of St. Patrick banishing Ireland’s snakes into the surrounding seas is likely an allegory that highlights his role in bringing Christianity to Ireland. In that version of events, the “snakes” are actually the pagan ideology that natives to Ireland had embraced for centuries.

585-802-1544 BRAIN-HEALTHY HABITS TO EMBRACE Cognitive decline is a condition that is often associated with aging, but even middle-aged people can experience memory loss or cognition issues. The Alzheimer’s Association says that more than five million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. By 2050, that number could rise to as high as 16 million people. More than 747,000 Canadians are living with Alzheimer’s or another dementia, says the Canadian Alzheimer’s Association. Although there is no definitive way to prevent dementia, living a long, vibrant life may be possible by encouraging some healthy habits for the brain. It is never too late or too early to begin health and lifestyle changes. Exercise: Becoming more active can improve brain volume, reduce risk for dementia and improve thinking and memory skills. The journal Neurology found that older people who vigorously exercise performed better on cognitive tests than others of the same age, placing them at the equivalent of 10 years younger. Increased blood flow that occurs with physical activity may help generate new neurons in the hippocampus, an area of the brain involved with learning and memory. The Harvard Medical School says aerobic exercise may help improve brain tissue by improving blood flow and reducing the chances of injury to the brain from cholesterol buildup in blood vessels. Quit smoking: The Alzheimer’s Association indicates that evidence shows smoking increases the risk of cognitive decline. Smoking can impair blood flow to the brain and cause small strokes that may damage blood vessels. Eat healthy foods: Foods that are good for the heart and blood vessels also are good for the brain. These include fresh fruits and vegetables, GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

whole grains, fish-based proteins, unsaturated fats, and foods containing omega-3 fatty acids. Neurologists state that, while research on diet and cognitive function is limited, diets, such as Mediterranean and Mediterranean-DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension), may contribute to a lower risk of cognitive issues. Consume caffeine: Caffeine may help boost memory performance and brain health. A Journal of Nutrition study found people ages 70 and older who consumed more caffeine scored better on tests of mental function than those who consumed less caffeine. Caffeine may help improve attention span, cognitive function and feelings of well-being. Information from Psychology Today also indicates caffeine may help in the storage of dopamine, which can reduce feelings of depression and anxiety. In addition, compounds in cocoa and coffee beans may improve vascular health and help repair cellular damage due to high antioxidant levels. Work the brain: Engaging in mentally stimulating activities can create new brain connections and more backup circuits, states Dr. Joel Salinas, a neurologist at Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital. Working the brain through puzzles, reading and participating in social situations can stimulate the release of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a molecule essential for repairing brain cells and creating connections between them. A good way to combine these lifestyle factors is to take an exercise class with friends, mixing the social, stimulation and exercise recommendations together. Cognitive decline can come with aging, but through healthy habits, people can reduce their risk of memory loss and dementia.

Do-ityourselfers are inspired by designs showcased in magazines, websites and their own communities. When DIY enthusiasts see a design they like, it’s understandable that they may want to emulate these looks at home. Remodeling is one of the larger DIY undertakings, and it goes beyond simple carpentry. Considering demolition, reconstruction, electrical, plumbing, and masonry work may be part of the DIY package, homeowners who are thinking about renovations must first stock up on the tools and other supplies of the trade. PROBLEMS THAT CAN LEAD TO LAWN DAMAGE Vice President
Foot traffic: Lawns can take a pounding from foot traffic, leading to compaction and spots of dead lawn. Try to redirect the traffic elsewhere to give worn down areas a break. Aeration can relieve soil compaction. If a certain area has become the de facto pathway, install a paver, gravel or concrete walkway in that spot.

THE CONNECTION BETWEEN BEER & LENT In the weeks leading up to Easter, practicing Christians commonly commit to a period of fasting and abstinence known as Lent. This commitment commemorates Christ’s 40-day journey into the desert, and the sacrifices modern day Christians make are meant to replicate those made by Christ during that period. Many Christians abstain from alcohol during Lent, but those who do may not realize that beer played a significant role in helping a small community of 17th century monks survive the Lenten fasting season. Monks from the Order of St. Francis of Paola, often referred to as “Paulaner monks,” fasted from all solid foods throughout the season of Lent during the 1600s. According to the Paulaner Brewery, the monks, originally from southern Italy, relocated to Bavaria, once an independent country but now a southern state in Germany, in the 1600s. Their strict religious orders forbade the monks from consuming solid food during Lent, but they still needed nutrients to sustain them. So the monks concocted a strong brew loaded with carbohydrates and nutrients. The monks must have liked the beer, as they continued to brew it and even began selling it in their community. An early doppelbock, the beer was one of the first offerings from the Paulaner Brewery, which opened its doors in 1634 and remains open today.

RESOLVE TO REDUCE SCREEN TIME Put away the phone or tablet. Simply moving a device out of sight may reduce the temptation to send a text or hop onto an app.
STRANGE BUT TRUE CORRAL ENTRYWAY CLUTTER The entryway to a home is the first thing guests experience when coming inside. It also can be the first place residents drop their belongings after long days at school or work. As a result, entryways can quickly be consumed by clutter. Taming such messes takes a mixture of ingenuity and planning. Homeowners hoping to clear their entryways of clutter must first decide what they want to get out of the space. Will it simply be a decorative spot with photos and other home decor on display? Or is functionality the primary goal? Once that decision has been made, take inventory of which items, such as shoes, keys, umbrellas or coats, need to be in the area, which don’t (i.e., old mail). To make things more organized, rearrange the former while removing the latter. Next it is time to assess storage needs and what’s already available. User-friendly storage items may need to be purchased to make the room as functional as possible.

In ancient Ireland, the shamrock symbolized rebirth, particularly the rebirth of warmer weather. But the shamrock also has more specific ties to St. Patrick, and remains one of the most recognizable symbols associated with his feast day. Historians believe that, on his return to Ireland (a native of Great Britain, St. Patrick was first taken to Ireland after being kidnapped by pirates, later returning as a Christian missionary after his release), St. Patrick used the shamrock to teach the natives about the Holy Trinity. In fact, an image of St. Patrick holding a shamrock first appeared on coins in 1675. The shamrock’s status as a symbol would continue to evolve when it became a figure of Irish patriotism during the Irish Rebellion of 1798. In 2003, the shamrock was registered as an international trademark by the Irish government.

Deep Vein Thrombosis Usually Due to Surgery ---
Discover the Human Touch in Hearing Technology
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 47-year-old woman. Five years ago, I developed a blood clot in my left leg after fracturing my ankle and being immobilized for several months. I was put on a blood thinner, and my ankle healed. Recently that leg started swelling again, and I went for an ultrasound. I was told that I have a chronic DVT, but that I don’t need blood thinners. Why do I not need a blood thinner now when I did before? What does “chronic” mean? Why am I getting swelling again five years after the first clot? -- L.S.B. ANSWER: Blood clots can happen in veins or arteries, but the type that happen due to surgery and immobilization are almost always in the vein. That’s the “V” in “DVT,” which stands for “deep vein thrombosis.” A brand-new blood clot has a high risk of propagating further up the vein, and also of breaking off and traveling through the vein into the heart. Most often, the clot will go on into the lungs, then called a “pulmonary embolus.” But in the rare case, the clot can go through a patent foramen ovale, which is sometimes called a hole in the heart, and cause a stroke. Because of the risk of life-threatening complications, acute DVTs are treated with anticoagulants, such as warfarin (Coumadin) or apixaban (Eliquis). This stabilizes the clot, and after a week or two the risk of propagation or embolization becomes much lower. Most people are treated for at least three months for maximum benefit. Treatment does not dissolve the clot, and a follow-up ultrasound will detail changes that show the clot is no longer acute, hence “chronic.” The vein itself is scarred and damaged, and never returns to normal. “Chronic DVT” isn’t the best term, since it confuses many, both patients and physicians alike. I prefer scarred, and some experts use “chronic luminal changes” to differentiate it from an acute clot. Whatever it is called, it may still be symptomatic. Most people with a history of a large clot in one leg will notice that leg swells more than the other in heat or with a large salt load. Even so, anticoagulant treatment is neither necessary nor helpful. Effective treatment for swelling associated with previous DVT includes salt restriction, compression stockings and leg elevation several times during the day. People with more severe symptoms that do not respond to conservative management may benefit from more aggressive therapies, such as placement of a metal stent to let the blood flow better through the damaged area. ***
Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2021 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

LONG-DISTANCE CAREGIVING (NAPSI)—Chances are, at some point you will be a caregiver to a friend or family member. Providing care and support can be challenging in any circumstance, but caring for a loved one who lives far away presents a unique set of challenges. When providing care for loved ones who do not live nearby, keep the following three tips in mind. Plan ahead. Learn your loved one’s medical wishes, contact information for doctors as well as important financial and insurance information. Research community options. Many older adults need a little help to stay healthy and independent. Area Agencies on Aging and other communitybased organizations can connect caregivers to programs that help with transportation, personal care services, nutrition, home modification and repairs, legal services, falls prevention programs and more. Care for yourself. The Eldercare Locator can connect caregivers to local resources that can help, including caregiver support programs that can provide training, and support groups and other resources that help caregivers better support their loved ones—and themselves. The Eldercare Locator can help both care recipients and their longdistance caregivers. Through its website, www.eldercare.acl.gov, and national Call Center at (800) 677-1116, the Eldercare Locator connects long-distance caregivers to resources that can provide assistance where it is needed most—in the care recipient’s own community. The Eldercare Locator is funded by the U.S. Administration for Community Living and is administered by the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging.

TIPS TO HELP MEN LOOK THEIR BEST: Protect your face. Skin dries with age, but men can take steps to protect their skin and keep it glowing as they grow older. When spending time outdoors, always wear sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 30 and, ideally, one that includes moisturizer as well. Exposure to the sun without adequate protection can lead to the formation of lines and wrinkles while increasing a man’s risk for skin cancer. Night creams that contain retinol can help smooth wrinkles and give skin a more even-toned look. Prescription night creams tend to be considerably more potent than over-the-counter alternatives.

TECH TO TAKE ALONG ON YOUR NEXT ROAD TRIP Apps: The right apps can make all the difference, especially for travelers whose road trip itinerary is not set in stone. GREAT SONGS FOR YOUR PADDY’S DAY PARTY “The Broad Majestic Shannon,” The Pogues: This song, from the legendary Celtic punk band’s 1988 album, was inspired by the River Shannon, the longest river in Ireland, and is sure to invite people to the dance floor with its opening notes. Lead singer Shane MacGowan, widely regarded as one of the most accomplished lyricists of his time, said the song is about an Irishman returning to his home along the Shannon after many years spent in London. That gives the song a somewhat autobiographical tilt, as MacGowan himself spent time living in London and Ireland.

Spread Your Wings with Positive Things - a LIVES Book Project BY MAGGIE FITZGIBBON "I felt good reading the book that my class made for the kids. The students' responses were great; they all loved the book. I really enjoyed working with all the younger students in the elementary school," Kailin said. "My favorite part about being in a class was working with the younger students." "Kailin's reaction was great, she was so pleased to share this book with the first graders. Our class was able to watch via Zoom as she read the book," Schnitter said.
Kailin Footer (center) with Sarah Wilcox’s first grade class at Geneseo Elementary School.
W
hen an idea becomes a reality, it's a win-win! A recent project came about when Marcy Wolcott, LIVES Teaching Assistant, shared an idea for LIVES students to compose and illustrate a book that would feature elementary students. LIVES student Kailin Footer had been interning in Sarah Wilcox's first-grade classroom at Geneseo Elementary School for several months, and when both were approached with the idea, everyone knew it would be welcomed from cover to cover.
Wilcox commented on how the book was received by the students. "Without planning it, some of the animals that the LIVES students picked to write about are some of our favorite classroom animals. When Jack’s name came up in the book as a flamingo it was a fun coincidence. After the story was over, everyone agreed Jack had to wear Pinky (the flamingo) and take a picture with Miss Kailin and the book," Wilcox shared. "Every page she turned had the students hanging on to find out which student would be featured. Even after their names had been read they were just as excited to hear their classmates' names." The LIVES Program incorporates a college course schedule, with student internships, employment training and readiness, and community service opportunities. Kailin's internship in Wilcox's classroom was an example of work experience as both the first-graders and Kailin were the true benefactors.
The LIVES (Learn Independence, Vocational and Educational Skills) Program is a four-year transitional program located on the campus of the State University of New York College at Geneseo in collaboration with the Genesee Valley BOCES. Students, ages 18-21, with intellectual and/or other developmental disabilities, are provided with an inclusive educational community. Due to the pandemic, this school year, this program is set on the Genesee Community College Campus, located in Dansville, New York.
"The first month of school is built around creating a classroom community and building trust - it’s something we as teachers work at every day. Kailin came into our classroom and gained the studentsí trust so quickly and I think it really speaks to her ability to connect with others," Wilcox said.
"We thought this might be a good idea to present to the class and believed that this would be a great way for our class to connect with these first graders. It was a fun project," said John Schnitter, LIVES Instructor.
Schnitter echoed Wilcox's thoughts and also shared how cooperative learning opportunities like these have cumulative effects.
In December 2020, LIVES students began the process of writing the book and creating artwork to correspond with each page. The title of the book is "Spread Your Wings with Positive Things." Each student in Wilcox's class is featured in the book as a different character, some type of animal that has wings, which includes birds, bugs, and flying fish. LIVES students illustrated the book and also wrote the text that corresponds with each drawing.
"Last school year before the pandemic hit, the LIVES students were able to visit classrooms at Geneseo Elementary and read books to small groups of these young students. This laid the groundwork for Kailin's internship. Our LIVES students learned much from this project; how to inspire and bring joy to others," Schnitter said. "It was very meaningful to our LIVES students, and especially Kailin, to witness the students' reactions to the book."
This project took several weeks to create and some LIVES students crafted multiple pages. They sketched out their concept, added some color, and drafted their text. Wolcott typed up the manuscript. LIVES students crafted their pages which were then bound into a book.
The LIVES (Learn Independence, Vocational and Educational Skills) Program is a program of the Genesee Valley BOCES. GV BOCES operates as a Board of Cooperative Educational Services offering shared programs and services to 22 component school districts located in Genesee, Wyoming, Livingston and Steuben counties in New York state.
Wilcox shared how Kailin assisted with the first-grade students. "Kailin volunteered in our classroom for approximately 10 weeks. She took on the role as an aide to me and was a support person for students. She practiced sight words, read books, and helped students cut and glue projects related to reading and phonics. She would mostly work one-onone with students," Wilcox said. Once the book was completed, Kailin made a surprise presentation to the class. "The students knew that we had planned a celebration for Kailin as a thank you for her help. The morning of the presentation, I let students know what was going to be happening, both the students attending school in-person and the remote learners," Wilcox shared. Excitement filled the air in the classroom as Kailin read the book to the in-person and remote first graders. Students waited for her to read each page as they listened for their name to be read.

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles Here Are 2 New Scams to Watch Out For They never stop. Scammers are continually busy, and so must we be to stay one step ahead of them. Here are two more scams they’re trying to foist on us. If you’re still working and receive W-2 or 1099 forms, look them over very carefully. If it’s a 1099-G, that’s for unemployment benefits. Did you receive those benefits? If not, it means that a scammer has used your identity to collect benefits. Those 1099-G forms go to the IRS, and that income is taxable. Contact the unemployment office that issued the 1099-G and have them send a corrected form showing zero unemployment income. If you can’t get the corrected form in time, file your taxes without using that 1099-G dollar amount and enclose a note saying you didn’t receive unemployment benefits. The IRS is well aware of this problem. Then send for your credit report, check it and put a freeze on your credit. In another new scam, if you do an online search for a big box store and the first result on the list says “Ad” in front of the store name, don’t click it. This scam is especially sneaky because if you click on the “Ad” link, you’ll initially go to a page that looks very real. It isn’t. Clicking it will take you to a site that may freeze your screen ... and provide you a handy phone number to call to have the problem fixed. The person at the other end is a scammer who will ask for permission to access your computer remotely. If you allow it, he’ll put a bug in your computer that locks everything up, and you’ll have to pay to get it released. Instead of doing a search, type in the Internet address of the store you want (call them if you’re not sure what it is) and go directly there.
This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

BREAKING DOWN THE LEPRECHAUN MYTH
Friday: Baked Breaded Fish/Tartar Sauce/Bun, Sweet Potatoes, Broccoli Florets, Bel Vita Cookies
To know how to grow old is the master work of wisdom, and one of the most difficult chapters in the great art of living. ~ Henri Frederic Amiel
Now widely depicted as tiny, bearded and mischievous men clad in coats and hats, leprechauns have been traced to ancient Ireland. The precise etymology of the word “leprechaun” is unknown, though many scholars believe the word we use today is derived from the old Irish “Lú Chorpain,” which means “small body.” Some scholars point to the 8th century word “luchorpán,” meaning “sprite” or “pygmy,” as the origins of the word leprechaun. Another word, “lubrican,” which first appeared in the English language in a 1604 play written by Thomas Middleton and Thomas Dekker, also has been linked to the modern word leprechaun.

“Woke” culture only have a simple solution: “Get Woke, Go Broke!” You have no idea what Freedom of Speech and Free Enterprise is all about. They teach misinformation in many educational institutions now. You all have your own brains to use; don’t be like fools following blindly to doomsville! Get the cobwebs out of your heads and start thinking for yourselves and stop listening to the media’s propaganda. You can never truly believe everything you hear. This is me exercising my Freedom of Speech, speech that comes from experience, not believing everything I hear or read. Social media is now more evil and hatefilled than it was originally designed to be. Stop it and start talking in person again.
Serving local businesses! ”Nothing happens until a sale is made” is an old adage but so very true. Our Ad Consultants have answered the call (and made a quite a few of their own), to help our customers continue to reach theirs. It’s our mission statement: “Reaching Your Customers,” and thanks to our dedicated sales staff, they’ve met this COVID challenge head on and continue to be essential for our advertisers! Well done! Steve Harrison A big thank you! Thank you so very much to the mother and son who found my driver’s license at Mendon Ponds Park and drove to my house to return it! You went out of your way to deliver it and saved me a lot of anxiety and hassle to
get it replaced. Your efforts are very much appreciated. So glad that there are nice people in the world like you two! COVID Immunization Clinic Thank you Livingston County Department of Health and Office of the Aging for holding a clinic for senior citizens. The clinic was extremely well organized and the shot was painless. Pay it forward I would like to thank the few who reached out recently at my request in search of a bike for rehab during our COVID situation with my COPD. In these rare times, it is good to see that there is still some good left in our communities and our neighbors who help one another.
Teacher vacation There is no way teachers are doing their full jobs when schools are barely open. It’s not their fault; they did not close schools. However, the school budget should be drastically reduced along with school tax bills. Don’t worry In response to Let It Go: There is no law or ordinance restricting any type of flag or flags you can fly on your
personal property. The only restriction or rule is that the American flag is the higher flag on the pole. Therefore if we choose to fly a Trump flag it is our right as American citizens. Would you go to someone’s residence to complain they are flying a flag from [another country], which, by the way, are all over in [local town]. Why does this bother you? I am using my first amendment right. Flags To the person ranting about the Trump flags: Leave it alone. If people can still drive cars with Obama and Hillary stickers years after the fact, people can have their flags. Trump supporters can’t have a bumper sticker as the crazies try to run them off the road. Trump flags are on private property. Stop the cancel culture.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Taking Your Dog for a Winter Hike DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I love hiking with my Border Collie mix, “Jess.” Even in the dead of winter, we are out in the snow. Jess carries her own supplies in saddlebags sized just for her. The problem is, my girlfriend keeps saying it’s dangerous for Jess to be out with me in the wintertime. That she could get hypothermia, or injure her paws on jagged ice and have to be carried out. I really have never had a problem. What’s your take? -– Tim Y., Manchester, New Hampshire DEAR TIM: Each dog is different, and a dog that is outdoors frequently can acclimate as the seasons change. It sounds like Jess is pretty well acclimated to the cold, and you probably keep a close eye on her while on the trail to make sure she’s not shivering or in distress. Hiking is an activity that keeps you both warm, even on snowy days. I do understand your girlfriend’s worries. Much bigger dogs than Jess have suffered hypothermia from spending just a few hours in the backyard, unsupervised. And that term, supervision, does make a difference. Assure your girlfriend that because Jess is with you on the trail, she is under your supervision at all times. If she does get chilly or injures a paw, you’ll know about it right away, and will make sure that Jess is safe and that she’s warm enough. Her saddlebags should carry food, a drinking bowl, a doggy sweater or emergency blanket, and a small first-aid kit to deal with scraped paws and splinters. My advice: Keep hiking and enjoy the time spent with Jess! Send your tips, comments and questions to ask@pawscorner. com. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.
