Neighbor Lets His Dog Poop in My Yard DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My neighbor constantly lets his dog come into my yard and do his business. Sometimes the dog is off leash, and other times he is on the leash while the neighbor just stands there. I’m tired of picking up after this dog! What can I do? Should I go out and squirt the dog in the face with water? -- Frustrated in White Plains, New York

Send in your entries for weeks 1-4. All entries due by Wednesday, March 24th!

Office - 538-2745 Cell - 585-259-5117 Pager - 527-7437

DEAR FRUSTRATED: This isn’t the dog’s fault at all -- it’s the fault of the owner for allowing his dog into your yard. Squirting the dog in the face (or the owner) will not help things and will only escalate the situation. The next time the owner comes by, talk to him -- calmly -- and ask him not to let the dog poop in your yard, to keep the dog on a leash, and to pick up after the dog. Explain that keeping him on a leash keeps the dog safe. If the neighbor keeps letting the dog into your yard, or if you don’t feel safe talking to this person, then contact the city. White Plains, like many municipalities in the U.S., has a leash law and imposes fines on owners who don’t keep their dog on a leash, who don’t pick up after their dog, or who allow their pet to go onto someone else’s property without permission. And please, whatever you do, don’t take this out on the dog. Pets are unaware of boundaries unless they’re trained to stay away from certain areas. They don’t realize they’re doing something wrong, especially if the owner is not correcting them. It’s up to the owner to control his dog while outside. Send your questions, tips or comments to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * “Shaving cream can be used as a spot remover for many carpets. Use only a small amount, and follow up with a damp cloth.” -- D.L. in New Brunswick, Canada * Here’s a great rule of thumb in the kitchen: The quicker it cooks, the more direct the heat. So, for a thin piece of steak that’ll cook quickly, a cast-iron pan fry will do nicely. For a thicker cut of, say, chicken, you should bake at a lower temp for a longer time. * To rid a shirt of a deodorant stain, sponge plain white vinegar onto the residue and rub briskly. * “Need sliced mushrooms for your salad or recipe? They are hard to cut, but you might already have the perfect tool for the job in your kitchen. If you have an egg slicer, get it out. It works very well for mushrooms, and it’s easier to use than trying to cut those slices yourself.” -- J.R. in Utah * Got an ink stain? Try using the ubiquitous nowadays (thankfully) hand sanitizer! Apply a little sanitizer to the ink stain, then use a clean, dry white rag to blot, checking the rag often and moving to a different spot on the rag as it takes up the ink. * To get clothing really clean, don’t overfill your washer. Oftentimes, we want to get the laundry done quickly by stuffing in as much as possible, thereby reducing the number of loads. But if there isn’t enough space for everything to move about, it can actually keep the clothing from getting clean. Never fill more than three-fourths full. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Crowd control: Local restaurants tend to be smaller and more intimate than many chain restaurants. This can translate into a calm dining experience. When crowds are small, the noise level inside the restaurant may be muted and service may be fast because there aren’t as many tables to serve. Furthermore, local establishments, although concerned about making a profit, may be less worried about table turnover rate, preferring to let diners linger if it means repeat business.

HOMETOWN Penny Saver

My name is Kitten and I turned 6 years old in March. For my birthday last year my mom and dad got me a little brother, toys, and gourmet cat food. Although I loved the toys and food, I am not enjoying my crazy little brother Elmo. He likes to copy everything I do, chases me to play, and cuddles me when I’m sleeping. I love to watch the birds on my perch every morning and my little brother sometimes steals my spot before I get there. I know one day when he is a little older and calmer, we will be the best of friends. Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

WHAT TO DO WHEN A PROJECT STALLS Ask for help. There’s no shame in asking for help to complete a project. Some homeowners may underestimate the scope of a project until it’s too late. Asking family, friends or neighbors for help might be the only way to get a stalled project back on track. Certain home improvement projects may not require advanced skills, and even friends or family with little or no home improvement experience can pitch in to complete such projects. When more advanced projects stall, homeowners may want to hire contractors to complete the work. If budgets have not left much room for hiring a contractor, homeowners can perform some of the labor on their own.

HOW TO CONSERVE WATER AT HOME Wash your car at a commercial car wash. Some vehicle owners may enjoy washing their cars at home in their driveways. But getting a car washed at a professional car wash can conserve substantial amounts of water. That’s because many new car wash facilities employ water reclamation systems that reuse water. According to San Diego Car Care, a professional car wash that employs water reclamation technology, each car washed at their facility consumes just nine to 15 gallons of water per wash. That’s a considerable savings compared to washing at home, as the State of Maryland’s Department of the Environment estimates that 100 gallons of water are consumed during a single 10-minute car wash at home using a garden hose.

TIPS TO HELP MEN LOOK THEIR BEST: Maintain your beard. The beard boom continues, but men who want to look sharp and well-groomed should make an effort to trim any wild facial hair they may have. Beard combs are designed to minimize damage to facial hair when used and can help to smooth facial hair that can appear unkempt. Some barbers even specialize in grooming beards, which can be helpful for men who are short on time or those with especially long beards that could use a little love and attention.

It is the first mild day of March: Each minute sweeter than before... There is a blessing in the air, Which seems a sense of joy to yield To the bare trees, and mountains bare, And grass in the green field... We from to-day, my Friend, will date

Can Mushroom Microdose Help With Depression?

Discover the Human Touch in Hearing Technology

Sue DeBruyne, Au.D. Doctor of Audiology

Lakeville 3513 Thomas Dr., Suite 2

---

Henrietta

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am battling depression and have a question about psilocybin. I stopped taking Effexor for my depression because I did not like the side effects. I also tried SAM-e, which had only a small effect. So, for the past three months I have been trying cognitive behavioral therapy, using certain tactics. I’ve cut back my days of work and avoid all news when not on the job. I stringently avoid social media. I don’t put myself into situations that I know will upset me. I am also limiting my alcohol consumption. Lately I’ve been reading about how microdosing the psilocybe mushroom can elevate or change moods for the better. I would like to know your opinion on the use of psilocybin for depression. It seems to be gaining traction, but my fear is that it can bring on degrees of psychosis. -- S.M. ANSWER: I found two studies on psilocybin, a naturally occurring chemical in 200 or so species of mushrooms, especially those of the genus psilocybe. One study from 2016 was in 29 people with cancer, and anxiety and depression: 60%-80% had “clinically significant reductions in depression or anxiety.” Another study (also from 2016) treated 12 patients with treatment-resistant depression with two doses of psilocybin, and their depression scores were reduced by more than half at five weeks. All 12 patients had adverse effects, usually mild, such as headache, nausea or confusion. Two patients had paranoia. All adverse effects lasted less than a day. While I am optimistic that this might lead to an additional option for therapy, these are very small studies. Further, the authors of the second study note “patients have taken pharmaceutical grade compounds of known strength and purity, under the supervision of trained therapists.” The authors and research institution “cannot advise on the procurement of illegal psychoactive substances, nor can we recommend self-medication.” I can’t emphasize that enough.

HOW TO OVERCOME WORKOUT FATIGUE Use proper form when exercising. Improper form can lead to injury and/or muscle fatigue. Men and women who cannot adhere to proper form when working out may need to reduce the amount of weight they’re lifting. As activities are performed using proper form, people may find they’re building muscle without growing fatigued. As workouts progress, weight can be added.

Grateful To the person(s) who paid for my lunch at Canal View Restaurant in Newark on Wednesday, March 4, about 11:00am, thank you! It was very thoughtful and much appreciated, and the lunch was delicious A grateful customer Thank you! While traveling up Rochester Street in Avon, I wasn’t paying attention to my speed.... which I believe was increasing. An Avon police officer was sitting along the street, and upon noticing me, he flashed his lights as a warning. This was much appreciated as I wasn’t way over the speed limit, and driving a minivan, I wasn’t exactly racing! Thank you for the warning as I believe it’s a great way to slow traffic without giving a ticket. Very professional!

Local COVID clinic I took my mom to the Rochester Regional Health Covid mass vaccination site, a drive thru clinic, at Unity Hospital on Long Pond Rd., Gates/ Greece. It was very well organized, and the nursing staff, which they all were, were very friendly and explained the procedure and the necessary paperwork very well. They set up garage-like pole barns to drive in, and you didn't even need to get out of the car, which is excellent for those with mobility issues. The vaccines were well protected to keep them fresh. It took a total of 30 minutes from the time we got there to the time we left, and that includes the time they had us wait after the shot was given to make sure no negative reaction occurred. This should be the example to use for all future mass vaccination sites. We go back in 3 weeks.

Let it go? I wish I could say your rant surprised me. But it was expected. Do you also make the same demands of your fellow Americans when they leave holiday decorations up on their personal property once the holiday is past? The level of control you yearn for is available...just in other countries. Keep hope alive though; [the government] is working diligently to procure the level of personal control you desire. Campaign flags A flag that says 'Vote 2020" with a name is not just a flag. Those flags are 'campaign' flags and are supposed to have been removed within 7 days of said election. Trump lost. Cut out the 'vote 2020' and keep your flag flying; otherwise, remove the flag! Election people should be asking for removal of said flags after almost 4 months. There is as difference!

Tired teacher To the reader who wrote, "There is no way teachers are doing their full jobs when schools are barely open" - you are wrong! Teachers are working harder than ever. Many teachers have students in front of us and students virtually at the same time! On the occasions when all students can't be taught at the same time, we are pre-recording lessons for those at home to view independently and then teaching it to the students in the classroom. In classes such as science, teachers are having students at home do one thing and students in the classroom do something hands-on and then flipping the work when the kids flip later in the week. Then there are some kids that attend 4 days a week, so that is another thing to manage. Until you have been in our shoes, don't you dare say, "teacher vacation."

‘BREATHE EASIER’ HEALTHCARE DONATION PROGRAM (NAPSI)—Healthcare workers on the front lines of the pandemic are in desperate need of creative solutions to the lack of personal protective gear and supplies that help block harmful airborne pathogens. But civic-minded companies can help. For example, NasalGuard Airborne Particle Blocker, an electrostatic topical nasal gel that prevents airborne particles from entering the nose, created the “Breathe Easier Healthcare Workers Donation Program.” The firm offers free nasal gel to any healthcare professional who’d like to try it. Requests can be sent via www.NasalGuard.com.

Expert Masonry with attention to every detail!

“NasalGuard is drug-free and safe for children, the elderly, pregnant or nursing women, and those concerned about potential drug interactions with other medications,” says Kanika Wahi, a biomedical engineer and co-inventor of the micriofiltration technology. “As people take protective measures to help themselves during this time, NasalGuard is another tool in their arsenal of prevention. We at NasalGuard are proud to support the frontline healthcare workers as well as anyone else in need of preventative products.” The company has long believed in giving back and has donated thousands of units of NasalGuard Airborne Particle Blocker nationally and internationally through a number of well-known charitable organizations. POLL According to the IRS, the latest round of stimulus checks is “in the mail.” Do you have any special plans for this extra cash? • • • • •

Congress has all but passed a new stimulus package which would see many American households receiving $1,400 per adult and per dependent. What do you think of the size of these stimulus checks?

Begin Again Horse Rescue (BAHR), of Lima New York, is pleased to announce that it has received a generous grant from the Kenneth A Scott Charitable Trust. This grant will allow the organization to run a pilot project to microchip all the equine in its program during 2021. In its 11 years dedicated to local equine rescue, BAHR has placed more than 270 of them and helped hundreds more to find safe haven in permanent homes. If the project proves successful, the rescue hopes to expand the program to include local community equine next year. For the first year of the pilot project, BAHR has obtained 200 microchips and two chip readers from Pet Link Inc. Included in the grant is a twenty-dollar honorarium for each equine earmarked to pay for veterinary implantation. It is hoped that all adopters and fostered caregivers will agree to take part in the new program during spring vaccine veterinary visits, so there should be no additional charges to the adopters for this service. “I am so thankful to the Kenneth A Scott Charitable Trust”, said Harriett Rubins, BAHRís Executive Director. “It makes possible one more level of safety-net to safeguard these equines that have had such bad experiences. We never want them to suffer again.” Additionally, Begin Again Horse Rescue is working to educate its surrounding equine communities to the benefits of microchipping. Microchipping affords an animal a permanent identification that cannot be separated or altered. The chips, painlessly embedded beneath the skin on the left side of the neck, are the size of a grain of rice and take seconds to implant. The chip numbers are registered with Pet Link online data base. They help prevent theft, aid identification and recovery during disasters, provide a mobile link to online health certificates and medical records, and they provide correct identification of equine at competitions to prevent fraud. Other benefits include traceability in disease outbreak scenarios, and they allow for rapid and efficient management of investigations into diseases or to missing animals. Most veterinarians have the chip readers. Begin Again Horse Rescue now has two, which we will use to help others identify their horses. It is through the generosity of volunteers, donations and grants that BAHR can support regional equine in need. For more information about microchipping or to donate to support Begin Again Horse Rescue’s on-going work, please visit the website at: www.beginagainrescue.org or follow us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/Begin Again Horse Rescue. SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles Seniors Raising Grandchildren For many seniors, retirement plans can change instantly when it becomes apparent that they’ll need to raise their grandchildren. The reasons this can happen are many, and none of them good: parental drug use, arrest and incarceration, a dangerous military assignment, alcoholism and even death of the parents. The potential complications can be immediate: You have no extra room because you downsized, you’re in a strict 55-plus seniors community, you’re on a very limited Social Security budget, your health isn’t great ... and so much more. If you’re a senior who’s now in this position, you’re not alone. It’s estimated that 3 million children are being raised by grandparents. But help is available. Start with the Child Welfare Information Gateway (www.childwelfare. gov) and scroll to your state. Ask about Medicaid for Children, SNAP benefits, TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families) and Supplemental Security Income for children. Raising Your Grandchildren (www.raisingyourgrandchildren.com) has a wealth of information. State Resources, for example, will take you to social workers, support groups and programs in your state. The legal aspect of raising your grandchildren can’t be ignored because it will impact all parts of your life. What you’re providing is called Kinship Care. Be sure you understand the differences between Formal, Informal, Temporary and Voluntary. Formal Kinship Care, for example, means the state has legal custody of the child but he lives with you. State laws vary, and you’ll have caseworkers, court appointments and more. Informal Kinship Care, on the other hand, leaves the courts and caseworkers out of your lives, but legal custody remains with the parents. That can be a problem when it comes to getting the child medical care and enrolling them in school. The only financial assistance you might be eligible for is TANF. Raising grandchildren is not easy. Get all the help and support you can.

This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

Daniel P. Merritt “Dan” March 12, 2021 West Henrietta: Dan passed away after a courageous battle with cancer on March 12, 2021 at age 57. He was predeceased by his father, Donald Merritt. He is survived by his loving wife of 9 years, Nancy P. (Steele) Merritt; children, Ashley Rose, A.J. Rose, Andrew Rose and Allissa Merritt; mother, Ronalee Merritt; brother, David (Katherine) Merritt; sister, Donna (David Wright) Merritt; nieces, nephews, a large loving extended family and many friends. Dan had an over 3-decade career in the bread/bakery industry and was recognized as an award-winning leader, innovator, and experienced forecaster of market needs. In his spare time, he was an avid golfer, bowler, fisherman and corn hole player. His kind, fun-loving and generous spirit was evident in everything he did. Dan touched many lives and will be sorely missed by all who were fortunate enough to know him. Family and friends are invited to call on Thursday, March 18th from 3-7 PM at Miller Funeral and Cremation Services, Inc., 3325 Winton Road South. Due to COVID-19 limitations, we ask that you sign up for a time spot for calling. A Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, March 19th at 10AM at St. Marianne Cope Parish at Guardian Angels Church, 2061 East Henrietta Road. Interment, St. Rose Cemetery, Lima, NY. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Wilmot Cancer Center by mail, 300 E. “Nine of every ten people improve on acquaintance…” ~ Frank Swinnerton Although we will never know the identity of Swinnerton’s acquaintances, we can readily see the truth in his statement. We may not react favorably to everyone when first we meet them. Some people, in fact, may strike us initially as being quite unlikeable. When we get to know these people better, for whatever reason, we discover hidden qualities that we like and admire. We find that their unpleasant aspects are not really too objectionable after all. It is wise to give every new acquaintance a chance to improve in our estimation. You can spare your loved ones the burden of making painful decisions under stress by making your own funeral arrangements prior to need. Ask us to explain the advantages.

EMPLOYMENT

GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

Unemployment isn’t easy for anyone, regardless of their age. But unemployed men and women over 50 may find it especially difficult to find work. Whether it’s a byproduct of age-related discrimination or any of a host of additional variables, jobless older workers often struggle to find work. In a 2016 analysis of government figures, the Schwartz Center for Economic Policy Analysis at the New School estimated that the jobless rate for workers 55 and older in August of 2016, six years after the Great Recession, was nearly 9 percent. At the time, the national jobless rate hovered around 5 percent. Unemployed men and women over 50 who are struggling to find work can consider the following strategies as they look to rejoin the workforce. Revisit your résumé. Unemployed men and women over 50 have no doubt updated their résumés to reflect their most recent professional experience. But they may need to trim some of the fat in regard to their work life 10 or more years ago. Today’s hiring managers may only be concerned with recent experience that illustrates skillsets that are relevant to today’s jobs. Men and women over 50 may consider their experience from 20 years ago invaluable, but if that experience does not meet the specific needs of the jobs they’re now seeking, then they should remove it from their résumés so hiring managers can quickly access the more relevant information from their work histories. Embrace 21st century job hunting. Finding a job in the second decade of the 21st century is unlike job hunting in decades prior, and wholly different from how men and women over 50 looked for jobs upon beginning their professional lives. Networking can mean the difference between unemployment and landing a job. Go to job fairs attended by hiring managers and join professional organizations that host events where professionals in your field can gather. Turn your age into a positive. Men and women over 50 should accept the likelihood that their new managers and/or hiring managers will be younger than them. When interviewing for a job, men and women over 50 should make an effort to showcase their enthusiasm about working with and learning from younger colleagues, while also noting their desire to commit long-term to a company. Some hiring managers may surprise older applicants, viewing them as potentially more reliable than younger workers simply looking to gain some experience in a particular industry before moving on to the next opportunity. Make use of your existing down time. Another strategy unemployed men and women over 50 can try as they look for work is to make better use of their existing downtime. Enrolling in online courses can give prospective employers the impression that applicants over 50 are both tech-savvy and willing to learn new things. Each of those things can help men and women over 50 overcome any unjustified, tech-related stigmas that hiring managers may attach to older job candidates. Finding work after 50 is not always easy, and job seekers may need to adjust their approach before they can get back in the workforce.
