Volunteers… We Need Your Help! Featured Nonprofit:

Aurora House Comfort Care Home

Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment Visit consignment stores: Consignment shops and Goodwill(R) stores are popular places to buy preowned items. These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale. When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available.

1 pound farfalle 1⁄2 pound asparagus, trimmed and sliced diagonally, 1⁄4-inch thick 10 extra-large eggs 4 tablespoons unsalted butter 1 garlic clove, minced 1⁄4 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese, plus more for serving 2 tablespoons heavy cream 1⁄2 pound cooked lump crabmeat, picked over to remove any bits of shell or cartilage 1⁄4 cup finely chopped fresh chives 2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh Italian parsley Freshly ground black pepper Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Add the farfalle and cook until al dente, following the manufacturer’s suggested cooking time. About 2 minutes before the pasta is done, add the asparagus. Meanwhile, in a mixing bowl, beat the eggs with a fork or whisk until slightly frothy. Set aside. When the pasta and asparagus are done, drain and set aside. Immediately melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the garlic and sauté until fragrant, about 1 minute. Add the pasta and asparagus and toss briefly to coat them with the butter mixture. Pour in the eggs, add 1⁄4 cup Parmesan and the cream, and stir and toss the mixture until the eggs just have begun to form moist curds, about 2 minutes. Add the crabmeat, chives and parsley and continue cooking and tossing until the eggs have formed more solid curds that cling to the farfalle, 1 to 2 minutes more. Serve immediately, passing grated Parmesan and black pepper for guests to add to taste.

PALM SUNDAY On what is now called “Palm Sunday,” Jesus Christ rode a donkey into Jerusalem while villagers welcomed him and waved palm branches. This is mentioned in each of the Biblical Gospels and occurs a week before His subsequent resurrection. Jesus possibly rode a donkey rather than a horse as a sign of peace, as a war-waging king might ride a horse. The “Passion of the Christ” is typically read during Palm Sunday masses.

NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson

Sunday, April 4th at 10am - Celebrate the gift of Easter and the promise of hope being born in us again.

* Buff out small scratches in glass with toothpaste. Apply a small dab and rub in circles lightly, then wipe away.

You can connect to the livestream (10:00 am) worship through our website at: https://fpcbatavia.org/ or by using this link:https://www.facebook.com/fpcbatavia/videos/ For the in-person worship at 10:00 am, we practice coronavirus courtesy.

* “Establish a family lost and found for small items that are discovered in places where they don’t belong. It can be as simple as socks or hairbrushes to money and electronics.” -- P.O. in Virginia * If an egg spills on the floor, sprinkle it with salt. Egg can be very slippery, and the salt will help keep it in place so that it is easier to clean up. * Give your garbage disposal some love and clean her out! Add a handful of baking soda and some crushed ice, then a cup of vinegar or lemon juice and follow up with hot water.

SPRING CLEANING PROJECTS YOU DON’T WANT TO FORGET BASEBOARDS: Though baseboards might not seem all that dirty, upon c loser inspec tion homeow ners might notic e substantial ac c umulations of dirt and dust. Suc h dirt and dust many not be removed so easily, so homeow ners might need to use hot w ater and a sponge to remove any debris that is c linging.

* “Label storage bins on all sides so that no matter how you stack them, or which direction you shove them in, you can always see at a glance which are which. Recently, I went searching through my attic for a particular box, and several boxes were moved out of the way. I had to spend much more time turning them to face the right way so that the labels would be visible.” -- R.F. in Ohio * If a glass breaks, here’s a tip to get up those tiny glass shards that are impossible to pick up or sweep up: Use the inside of a slice of white bread, wadded up. No bread? You also can use a blob of play dough.

PAW’S CORNER

Page 10

A Runner’s Plea to Dog Owners DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I witnessed an incident on my morning run that illustrated the reason why dogs need to be on a leash at all times in residential areas. A runner ahead of me on the side of the road approached a dog owner and his Collie ambling along the sidewalk. The owner had unfastened the dog’s leash so that it could explore ahead. The dog seemed calm, but as the runner drew near to them, it suddenly bristled, snarled and then leaped at the runner. Before the owner could grab the dog’s collar, the runner was bitten on her cheek and hand. The injuries were serious enough to require stitches. There is no excuse for an owner to allow their dog off the leash except where it’s expressly permitted, such as dog parks. Even when an owner has trained their dog to respond to verbal commands, the command might not be given fast enough to stop the dog. Runners are attractive targets to many dogs. As we run past, a dog may take our movements as a signal to chase. I have two dogs myself. They’re both too old to run with me now, but in their younger days, I frequently took them with me -- both on a leash. They’ve always responded quickly to verbal commands, but I do not rely on those alone to keep them from darting into traffic or annoying other runners. Please tell your readers to keep the leashes on their dogs. It keeps others safe, it keeps the dogs safe, and it protects owners from legal issues. It’s also the law. -- Rick in Dracut, Massachusetts DEAR RICK: You told them, and I thank you. Readers, take heed and keep your dogs on a leash and under your control when outdoors. Send your tips, comments and questions to ask@pawscorner. com.

Byron-Bergen Senior is Full STEAM Ahead BY GRETCHEN SPITTLER

Students play robot soccer!

Students test their successful project!

n 2013, a fifth-grade Byron-Bergen student entered the school science fair. Her project tested different types of lip gloss. She developed a system of criteria for subjects to rate each sample. There were over 150 entries that year. She won. The next year, she won again. Now a senior, Hope Hersom has her sights set on becoming a mechanical engineer and helping promote STEAM (Science Technology Engineering Art Mathematics) fields to other young women. Hersom and several of her classmates volunteered to assist at the sixth-grade Day of STEAM activities on March 10. “Hope was very interested in helping with this event in the hopes that opportunities like this will get more girls “I want to help rural interested in STEAM,” said Byron-Bergen STEAM Lab women get into the teacher Craig Schroth. “She STEAM fields – especially kids at this mentioned that many of the age – because only 13 younger girls shared with her how much fun they percent of engineers had with each challenge, are women.” including the rocket activity - Hope Hersom she was leading. I thought it was awesome that a future mechanical engineer was leading our sixth-graders with their rocket designs.” Hersom said, “I want to help rural women get into the STEAM fields – especially kids at this age – because only 13 percent of engineers are women.” She attributed her drive to take advanced technology courses in high school to her elementary school science fair experiences. When the STEAM Lab was launched in 2015, the current sixth-grade class was in first grade. Since its inception, it has been a way for all kids to build confidence and find interest through science-related topics. All of the Day of STEAM activities utilized

trial and error and problem-solving techniques from discovering the right combination of coding blocks and changing variables to working with limited resources. One of the most popular activities was 5-on-5 robot soccer. It required team work and collaboration, two ideas that Schroth promotes in the STEAM Lab. “I thought today was a fantastic reminder of not only how STEAM can bring people together through collaboration and problem solving, but of the importance of providing these activities to students during their formative years,” said Schroth. “Who knows, today may have inspired a few more young people to become mechanical engineers or, at least, maintain an open mind towards science.”

Inspiration: One oft-overlooked benefit of working with professional contractors is the likelihood that they can draw up ideas for projects that homeowners might otherwise never have thought up on their own. Homeowners without specific ideas in mind can ask contractors to come up with various scenarios before committing to a particular one. Veteran contractors can draw on years of experience to create designs that DIYers might be incapable of coming up with and/or incapable of seeing through to completion.

Give rugs and floors a deep cleaning. Recirculated air may be full of dust and other microscopic particles that end up blow ing throughout your home. Also, it’s easy to track in dirt and other materials on your shoes that become imbedded in carpeting. At least once a year, rent or enlist the surfaces of carpet and upholstery cleaners to give floors a thorough cleaning. You may be surprised at how clean and fresh a home looks and smells once rugs and carpets are deep-cleaned. You also can make a dry carpet cleaner using baking soda, corn starch and desired fresh herbs for fragrance. Sprinkle and then vacuum up after a few hours. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

TYPES OF FIREPITS FOR YOUR BACKYARD OASIS Gas firepit: Gas firepits are touted for their convenience, as they don’t require homeowners to carry wood and build fires. Upon being connected to a gas source, gas firepits provide fire at the click of a switch. Gas firepits are also appreciated for their safety, as there is little or no risk that flames from gas firepits will grow too large and become difficult to control.

POTENTIAL CULPRITS BEHIND THINNING GRASS Leaf spot The Center for Agriculture, Food and the Environment at the University of Massachusetts Amherst notes that leaf spot diseases affect both cool- and warm-season turfgrasses. Various fungi can cause leaf spot. Symptoms and the timing of the appearance of leaf spot will vary depending on which fungi is causing the problem. For example, bipolaris sorokiniana, which affects grasses in warm, wet summer months, produces small spots that are dark purple to black. Dreschslera poae is another fungi that causes leaf spot, and it also produces dark purple to black spots. However, it tends to appear in the spring when the weather is cool and moist. Understanding the different fungi and when they typically strike can help homeowners identify what is causing their grass to thin. In such situations, professional landscapers can be invaluable resources as well.

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles Senior Center Closed? Meet Up in Parking Lot Is your senior center still closed? Most of them are, which means that we haven’t experienced our typical routines for a very long time. Mostly it’s the social aspect we miss. A show of hands: How many of us, if given the opportunity, would show up at the senior center for an in-person gathering even if it was held outside? In the parking lot? It’s being done in some parts of the country, even in cold weather, so it’s possible if those who run your senior center are willing to do the work of spacing chairs 6 feet apart and making coffee in thermoses so it stays hot and pushing around a trolley of cookies. With spring officially here, chances are that if you and others approach the staff of the senior center to express interest, social gatherings like these could be made to happen. An hour once a week would go a long way toward reconnecting with friends and checking in with others to see -- in person -- how they’re really doing. Besides the loss of social interaction, it’s the classes many of us miss: budgeting for living on Social Security, cooking for one, journaling ... and especially the hands-on classes about electronic devices. Those device classes are the very classes we need now that could help us to interact with others on video calls. To their credit, some senior centers have figured out that, if nothing else, they can show video exercise classes we can follow from home. And many of them have stepped forward with volunteers who can help get us signed up online to get the COVID vaccine. From what I hear, though, it’s the in-person social interactions that we seniors miss the most. Even a once-a-week gathering, in a parking lot, would be very welcome. HOW TO MAINTAIN MENTAL ACUITY Stay socially connected. Maintaining social connections with family, friends and community members also can help women prevent cognitive decline. Epidemiologist Bryan James of the Rush Alzheimer’s Disease Center studied how social activity affected cognitive decline, ultimately noting that the rate of cognitive decline was considerably lower among men and women who maintained social contact than it was among those with low levels of social activity.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m a 91-year-old male who makes frequent visits to the bathroom to urinate. I am in good health and I wonder what causes this. Where does all that liquid come from? -- A.R.N. ANSWER: What goes in must come out. All the liquid you urinate came from fluid you consumed when drinking and eating food. But it may be more about perception than volume. Frequent urination is extremely common in both men and women, and although some causes are the same, such as an overactive bladder, men have an additional anatomical structure that can lead to urinary problems as they get older: the prostate, a normally walnut-sized gland that may increase in size as men age. It is through the prostate that the urethra, and thus all the urine, has to flow. If the prostate is enlarged, the urinary flow slows down. As the prostate obstruction becomes worse, men may have trouble emptying the bladder completely. This has the effect of making men go to the bathroom more frequently, since the bladder has less functional size. In this case, you aren’t urinating any more volume than before, just more often in smaller amounts. Treatment needs to be directed at the underlying cause. Overactive bladder and enlarged prostate have similar symptoms and different treatments. It is possible that you really are having excess volume, however. Diabetes is the biggest concern here, and you should be tested if you have truly large volumes of urine. ***

Sm oking decreases the blood flow in the kidneys, decreasing their ability to function at optim al capacity. Sm oking also increases a person’s risk of high blood pressure and cancer of the kidneys. • Eat healthy. A healthy diet decreases a person’s risk for high blood pressure and diabetes. Ban dogs from parks Is banning dogs from parks what it is going to take to stop dog owners from leaving plastic bags of dog poop around the park? Dog owners, it is your job to remove your dog’s poop, not leave it in the park for other people. Banning dogs from parks may be the only solution to this problem! Now that spring is here and more people are walking their dogs, the plastic poop bags line the park walkways. It’s disgusting.

ter you. No wonder hunters have trouble getting permission when finding private land to hunt on when those like you do not respect private property landowners. Disgusting language I know and understand the First Amendment: Freedom of Speech. I also understand that we have a choice of what kind of language to use. I live in a very small community. One resident in this community has chosen to use the most vulgar, obscene word in our language on a very large sign in his front yard to insult our President. Any child old enough to read can see this and decide it is all right to use that word. I wonder if he uses this word with his children and grandchildren? Can his parents be proud of that sign? I don’t know what he hopes to accomplish by doing this, but what he has accomplished is to show that he has no dignity or class. How sad!

HOW COUPLES CAN BENEFIT FROM HIRING LOCAL WEDDING VENDORS: Individuals who take great strides to conserve resources by reducing their energy consumption and protecting the environment often find that shopping local is beneficial. Local vendors are more likely to source their materials from other local businesses, reducing their carbon footprints along the way. For example, local caterers may rely on local farmers for their foods, affording couples the chance to host eco-friendly or even farm-to-table weddings.

3 days per week to start, with potential to expand to 5 days per week. Must be willing to work at both locations: Lakeville and Henrietta. Duties to include (but not limited to): checking patients in and out, filing and recordkeeping, scheduling and confirming appointments, answering inbound and making outbound calls, opening and closing up the office, and maintaining office presence. Must be available to assist providers at all times, while also being able to work independently. Qualifications: Experience as a medical receptionist or secretary highly desired, along with experience using medical office management software and good understanding of health insurance terminology.
