HOLY THURSDAY Holy Thursday is sometimes referred to as “Covenant Thursday,” “Maundy Thursday” or “Thursday of Mysteries.” Holy Thursday commemorates the Last Supper of Jesus Christ with the apostles. According to Catholic News Agency, Holy Thursday might be one of the most important, complex and profound days of celebration in the Catholic Church. Holy Thursday celebrates the institution of the Eucharist as the true body and blood of Jesus Christ and the institution of the sacrament of the priesthood.

Christians believe that Holy Communion is the receiving of Jesus Christ through the sacrament of the Holy Eucharist. The Eucharist is comprised of bread and wine, although some denominations believe that it is not necessary to receive the Lord’s body and blood in each, instead feeling that Christ is present fully in either the bread or wine. Catholics believe that through the process of transubstantiation the bread and wine before the priest becomes the body and blood of Christ. According to catechism and the liturgy, as soon as the Institution Narrative begins, the Lord is present in the elements of bread and wine. The institution of Holy Eucharist occurred during the Last Supper. As stated in 1 Corinthians 11:23-26, Jesus instructed His followers to use bread and wine to remember the sacrifice He was going to make when He died on the cross for people’s sins. While much fanfare is understandably afforded to First Holy Communion, Christians receive the Eucharist every day at church services all over the world. Receiving communion is not a singular act. People recognized that every time they gathered around a table to eat and drink, it provided an opportunity to recognize and thank Jesus. Adults can reinforce this concept to children by explaining that receiving Communion each week at Mass is just as special as receiving it that first time in spring. Holy Communion is an opportunity to enter into an intimate union with Jesus Christ, who Christians believe provides holiness and grace to all who are willing to receive Him.

COPING WITH THE LOSS OF A LOVED ONE Reach out to others. Grief often can turn a person inward, and your feelings may be bottled up. Talking about your emotions, whether it’s with a trusted friend or even a therapist, may help. Online message boards that cover grief and loss may provide the support you need. Leaning on others who have been in your shoes may help you recover more quickly.
“The obscure we see eventually. The completely obvious, it seems, takes longer.....” ~ Edward R. Murrow
In our interpersonal relationships, how often we suddenly wake up to a situation that should have been obvious from the beginning. In some cases, we may not want to face up to an unpleasant fact so we ignore it and pretend to search for other solutions. For some reason, the more obvious a thing or an idea may be, the easier it avoids detection. The lesson here is that, when we must find an answer, we should check out the obvious first, rather than come to it as a last resort. Over the years, we have served a great number of families in this community. Most of them came to us on the recommendation of other families who appreciated our thoughtful consideration.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Roommate Stuck With Unwanted Kitten DEAR PAW’S CORNER: The local shelter in our college town does not allow college students to adopt pets. However, my roommate managed to get around the rule by using her boyfriend’s address, and she brought a kitten into our dorm. I told her to take it back, as pets are not allowed in the dorm (except for service animals). She ignored me. Two weeks later, she dropped out of school and moved in with her boyfriend, leaving behind most of her stuff -- and the kitten! If I tell our R.A. I could get in trouble. What can I do? I don’t want anyone to know what college I’m at, so sign me -- Beth in Boston DEAR BETH: Honesty is the best policy here, and the welfare of the kitten is at stake. Contact the shelter right away. Explain what happened with your roommate, that you’re caring for the kitten as she’s abandoned it, but that you aren’t allowed to keep it. Next, tell your R.A. what happened. Call your parents, too, so they’re aware of the problem and will support you if there’s an issue with the school. Your roommate used either her name or her boyfriend’s name and his address. The shelter will have this on file, so they can verify that you’re not the one who’s responsible for the kitten. They’ll give you instructions on how to bring the kitten back and surrender it to them. If there’s a surrender fee, they should bill the boyfriend and your ex-roommate. Likewise, any penalties assessed by the college should fall on your ex-roommate. Send your tips, comments or questions to ask@pawscorner. com. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

Spring is a Great Time to Bird Watch - Here’s How! B Y M A K AY L A H O L L I M A N
S
pring is here, and what better way to start th season thee se seas ason as on than with Nature Walks and Bird Watching? The G Gen Geneeneen esee County Park & Forest provides good opportunities es tto o ge gett ou outt enjo joyy lo jo love vely ve ly there and experience the good weather and also to en enjoy lovely spring activities.
From my interview with Shannon Lyaski, the Conservation Education Program Coordinator at Genesee County Park & Forest, I’ve learned she has a unique view on bird watching that is as fascinating to hear as her knowledge about birds! “I enjoy watching wild animals in nature,” Lyaski said. “I also love their songs and their colors. It is very exciting to see birds that migrate through our area seasonally. It’s a special moment to catch them here, knowing they won’t be here a month from now. It is also exciting to see a bird that is on a rare bird list or is not as abundant as it was known to be in past years.” “It is also lots of fun to watch them in their courting behaviors, nesting and baby raising, and hiding food for the winter,” Lyaski continued. “Birds generally only sit still for a minute, then fly away. Wrens tend to be an exception; they will stay in one place and sing all day long!”
Participating in the Birding Walks program will most likely include going through wetlands, meadow, and forest habitats while learning how to identify birds by sound and sight. It sounds complicated when you first star one of Lyaski’s pro tips is to go on the ornithology lab website and search for a list of “common backyard birds,” pick a bird, and type the bird of choice into the “all about birds” page. Find the bird’s song of that bird and listen to it on repeat, and and the next time you’re outside see if you can hear it. As soon as you’ve mastered them all, you can move on. If you can learn your favorite songs, you can learn bird songs. Some birds often seen in New York State are the Eastern Bluebird, Canada Geese, Mallard and Wood Ducks, and Redwinged Blackbirds, to name a few. The best time to go bird watching is during the morning. Consider taking the opportunity to go participate in the Birding Walks program for beginners and experienced bird watchers alike; all are welcome. Walks are hosted on Saturdays, April 9th, April 23rd, and May 14th from 7am to 10am at the Genesee County Park & Forest and are led by volunteer Tom Clark, a great birder. It’s a perfect way to enjoy a lovely spring. Enjoy this article? Check out this week’s other great stories online at www.gvpennysaver.com: • Counting the Cost: Victor Farmington Library • March 29th Proclaimed Vietnam War Veterans Day in Livingston County
As a kid, Lyaski became interested in bird watching from being bored at her grandmother’s house one day. Unfortunately, she doesn’t go bird watching as often as she would like today, but it doesn’t decrease her enjoyment of the activity nor lessen her knowledge. Some of her favorite birds include the Male Indigo, Wood and Hermit Thrush, the Veery, Bitterns, and Owls— mostly Snowy Owls.

DID YOU KNOW? Getting out and about is a vital component of many seniors’ daily lives, but it’s important that aging men and women recognize how much exercise is healthy for them. The Department of Health & Human Services notes that adults need a mix of physical activity to stay healthy. That mix should be a combination of moderate-intensity aerobic activities, which can include golfing, swimming and even gardening, and muscle strengthening activities like weightlifting that make the muscles work harder than usual. The DHHS recommends adults combine 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity per week with at least two days of muscle-strengthening activities. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that these guidelines are safe for individuals who are 65 and older, generally fit and have no limiting health conditions. Individuals who do not fit that criteria should consult with their physicians before beginning a new exercise regimen, as it’s possible that they could be putting their health at considerable risk if they attempt to follow guidelines designed for people who are generally fit. It’s also important that healthy seniors avoid overdoing it in regard to exercise. Though the DHHS suggestions are the minimum recommendations, going too far beyond those guidelines without first consulting a physician could increase seniors’ risk for injury, illness or even death. DEAR DR. ROACH: I have a strong history of premature heart disease in my family, and I have been having some unpleasant side effects of blood pressure medicine. I decided to try a completely plant-based diet: grains, vegetables, legumes, fruit, seeds and nuts. After about a month on the new diet, my total cholesterol dropped 44 points to 159, and the other numbers went from borderline to normal, as measured by my cardiologist. My blood pressure, which was often high in the mornings (typically 150+/90), was 118/68 this morning. I’ve only lost about 5 pounds in the past couple of months, and I’m probably still 8-10 pounds overweight. I am pleased with the results, but why didn’t any of my doctors recommend this? -- J.S.B. ANSWER: Diet is a powerful tool for improving overall health, especially heart health. I believe it is underemphasized by most physicians. Changing from a meat-based diet to a mostly plant-based diet often prompts improvements in blood pressure, cholesterol and weight. Your results are better than most, but by no means unheard of. You haven’t said how you feel, but many people feel more energetic as well. Many others are able to come off of some (occasionally all) of their medications, which of course reduces side effects. Why don’t physicians recommend it? I think it’s a combination of reasons. Some doctors don’t realize how powerful the effects of dietary change can be. A good deal of patients are highly resistant to making changes, so physicians are used to their dietary advice failing. Also, taking the time to get an accurate diet history is hard, personalizing dietary advice is harder, and writing a prescription is easy. It is not necessary to have a 100% vegan diet like yours to experience a benefit. A mostly plant-based diet has substantial benefits. It’s easier for some people to make incremental changes. ***
Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2022 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

ROOT CANALS ARE NO JOKE Root canals have often been used as a punchline in jokes to illustrate something unpleasant and painful. Although that may have been the case decades ago, with today’s advancements in technology and anesthetics, root canal treatment is a routine, straightforward procedure that relieves dental pain while saving a tooth from extraction. Root canals become necessary when there is inflammation or infection in the roots of a tooth. During the procedure, the pulp inside the tooth is removed, the root canal is cleaned and disinfected, and a filling is placed to seal the spaces. Saving a natural tooth is always preferable to extraction, making root canals a safe and suitable option since root canal-treated teeth can last a lifetime. Although root canal therapy once had the reputation of being painful, almost anyone who has experienced this
procedure recently can affirm that today’s techniques make a root canal a virtually painless, effective treatment. If you are experiencing oral pain or have unusual symptoms, call your dentist. Be aware of threats to your health, and take steps to prevent problems from occurring in the first place. If you don’t have a family dentist at this time, we invite your call at BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, 585.343.4246. You’ll find our full service dental practice at 6 Batavia City Centre. P. S. The first recorded effort of treatment with a root canal dates back to 1776 when English dentist Robert Woofendale developed a method of treating diseased teeth by cauterizing infected pulp to close off the tooth from infection.

THE MEANING BEHIND EASTER SYMBOLS Clothing: New clothing is another symbol of Easter that traces its origins back further than many Christians may realize. It’s customary for present-day Christians to don their Sunday best when attending Easter Sunday Mass, and the tradition of looking sharp on Easter can be traced to the early Christians, who would wear new white robes for baptisms during Easter services. Eventually, all Easter celebrants began to wear new clothes during Easter services. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles
Living on Social Security
We’ve now experienced our 2022 Social Security benefit amount for a couple of months, the 5.9% increase. How are you doing? The problem is that the COLA (Cost of Living Adjustment) is calculated from July to September the year before. Yes, prices were inching up then, but by December, we were seeing the writing on the wall when the annual Consumer Price Index was already up 7%. Add to that the hefty Medicare Part B increase to cover the cost of Aduhelm, the Alzheimer’s drug most of us will never take. Even though the price was forced down (from $56,000 per patient per year to $28,200 per year), our increased Medicare cost per month won’t come down. Seniors, especially those who only have Social Security for income, are struggling, and not only at the grocery store. Heating costs, gas for our vehicles, furniture, clothing ... they’ve all gone up. The dilemma, some say, is that the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (which establishes the Cost of Living Adjustment) doesn’t take into consideration our spending patterns. We don’t have the same needs as wage earners and clerical workers, and spend much more on medical and housing, for example. If you haven’t retired yet or if you still have a paycheck coming in, reconsider any plans you have for retirement until your savings are substantial. When you think you have enough, do an experiment before you stop working: Calculate your expected Social Security benefit per month and live on that amount for a long time, at least several months. Six months would be better. What looks fine on paper might not actually be fine when it comes to living on those limited dollars. And remember that the longer you wait before claiming Social Security, the higher your benefit will be when you do. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

STELLA COLLISION
STAY SAFE IN BRIGHT DRIVING CONDITIONS Weather often contributes to motor vehicle accidents. Snow, rain and other factors that compromise drivers’ vision can make driving hazardous, but there’s a dark side to sunny skies as well.
The spirit that inspires travelers to take to the open road still exists, but nowadays drivers can make their road trips even more fun by taking along the appropriate tech.
Glare from the sun can compromise drivers’ vision and lead to driving mishaps, regardless of drivers’ experience or skill level. The sun can pack a powerful punch any time during the day, but can be especially hazardous in the early morning sunrise and late-afternoon sunset. A 2017 study published in the journal Medicine titled, “Life-threatening motor vehicle crashes in bright sunlight” looked at the risks posed by bright sunlight. Researchers found that the risk of a life-threatening crash was 16 percent higher during bright sunlight than during normal weather. Researchers concluded that bright sunlight may create visual illusions that lead to driver error, including poor distance judgement.
AUTO SECTION
Plentiful sunlight is often a hallmark of spring and summer, but sun-blindness is a real concern for drivers. As anyone who has turned into blazing sun only to discover their windshield has been rendered opaque by sun glare can attest, driving on sunny days can be challenging. Unfortunately, the sun might create substantial glare during rush hour, making driving during these times more dangerous and accidents more likely.

DID YOU KNOW? Broadening one’s horizons through crafting can be a worthwhile pursuit. Crafting can serve as a relaxing pastime and provide an opportunity to learn rewarding skills. Learning to crochet is one way for men and women to combine creativity and practicality. Crochet is a form of handwork using yarn and a crochet hook. According to the Crochet Guild of America, there’s no way to know just how old the art of crochet is. However, crochet expert Annie Potter has said the modern form of the art originated in the 16th century, primarily in France and England. Others surmise crocheting traces its origins to Arabia before it spread westward through various Mediterranean trade routes.

THE MEANING BEHIND EASTER SYMBOLS Palm fronds: Palm Sunday is the final Sunday of Lent, taking place one week before Easter Sunday. Palm Sunday commemorates Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem. According to the Gospels, Jesus rode a young donkey into Jerusalem, where the townspeople threw palms in front of him in homage. That practice was a customary sign of respect in Jerusalem, and today Christians believe the palm is a sign of peace. Palms continue to be distributed to the faithful during Palm Sunday Mass. MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On April 3, 1936, Richard Bruno Hauptmann, convicted in the kidnapping and murder of the 20-month-old son of Charles Lindbergh, is executed by electrocution. In 1932, Charles Lindbergh Jr. was kidnapped from the nursery of the Lindbergh home.
* When you make a meringue, be sure to spread it all the way to the crust on all sides. If you do, it will not shrink. * After your dishwasher has run its course, open up the door and let the dishes air dry. On cold days, there’s the added bonus of humidifying the house with the steam that escapes. * Research says that the best time of day to exercise is in the morning, but the truth is that the best time for YOU to exercise is when you will go through with it. So, try out different times of the day, and when you find one that fits, schedule it in your daily planner and block the time out at least three times per week. * Making your own flavored yogurt is cheap and much better for you. You can avoid a lot of added sugar. Start with plain, unflavored yogurt and add: pureed fruits, toasted oats, honey, vanilla or almond extract, or plumped-up raisins (add enough hot water to cover a tablespoon of raisins and let sit for a minute or two). Yummy. * “If you stick the end of your celery stalks in a cup of water and rocks (or in some very damp dirt), they will begin to regrow. This is a great way to have a never-ending supply of celery. HOME SERVICES
Moss: Moss on a rooftop may give a home character, but that added character is costly. Shady areas of a roof can be susceptible to the growth of moss and fungi because moisture can be trapped in such areas. If possible, remove moss or fungi from a roof with a stiff brush or hire a professional to do the job instead. Moss may come back even after brushing it off, so homeowners should keep an eye on areas of their roofs that get little sunlight. In addition, trapped moisture can be very harmful to a roof, so it may be wise to exercise caution and have roofs with mold or fungi growths inspected.

I had another area that water would come in where the concrete floor met the concrete wall. I thought this type of leak would be very difficult to correct. I was surprised how easily and fast this problem was solved. Great work!” Arthur Batavia, NY

Keep private conversations private. When the phone rings while you are in public and you don’t want to allow the call to go to voicemail, answer the call and immediately and politely explain that you are in public. This indicates to the person on the other end of the line that you do not want to broadcast potentially sensitive information to strangers, while also showing those around you that you respect them enough to reserve such conservations for private settings.

DID YOU KNOW? The terms “hospice” and “palliative” are not interchangeable. Hospice care is a form of palliative care geared toward patients with terminal illnesses facing their final months or weeks of life. Palliative care, according to WebMD, aims to ease pain and provide help to people confronting a serious illness, even if it’s not necessarily life-threatening. Palliative care may include assistance for those with cancer, kidney disease, multiple sclerosis, or any number of conditions. Illnesses can make it difficult to live life fully, and palliative care is used in conjunction with other treatments to improve quality of life.

HOMETOWN Penny Saver
Hello I am Pixie. My mom usually just calls me a freeloader. She’s all mad she had to go to Wegmans to buy eggs this winter. I’m not a machine, lady. Sheesh. I like to spend my days rolling in a sunny dirt pile, eating bugs, snacking on my moms vegetable gardens, and pretending I’m tough to my friends. I may be the smallest but I’m a boss! I’m sick of all this white stuff and looking forward for some greenery to snack on. Happy Spring!
Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340, Avon, NY 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * A newly sworn-in Barack Obama visited the U.K. in 2009 and presented some rather curious gifts to the prime minister and queen: 25 DVDs to David Cameron, and an iPod Classic to the then-octogenarian Elizabeth II. Cameron returned the gesture with some “wellies” and Hobgoblin ale.

rob@tra-mac.com THE MEANING OF GOOD FRIDAY Good Friday is a Christian holiday that is celebrated every year on the Friday preceding Easter Sunday. Good Friday commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and his death at Calvary, the location outside of Jerusalem’s walls where the crucifixion took place. Though Good Friday is considered a holiday and is a legal holiday in many countries across the globe, the commemoration is not characterized by the festive atmosphere many holidays inspire. In fact, in the fourth century, the Apostolic Constitutions described Good Friday as a day of mourning and prayer. In addition, many Christians fast on Good Friday, eating only one full meal and two smaller meals that do not add up to a full meal. Christians believe that commemorating the death of Christ helps to remind them of the sacrifices that Christ made and the human sin that contributed to his death. The observance of Good Friday has existed for centuries. According to Catholic Online, the Catholic Church does not celebrate Mass on Good Friday, though church services held on Good Friday correspond to the divisions of a traditional Mass. These services include the Liturgy of the Word, during which the Passion of Jesus Christ is read; the intercessory prayers for all people, including nonChristians; the Veneration of the Cross, during which the crucifix is unveiled to the congregation; and the Holy Communion. During these services, the church organ and bells are silent. EMPLOYMENT

Alco offers excellent benefits and career stability. Interested candidates should email:
HR@Kaddis.com
According to a 2018 report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average person changes jobs between 10 and 15 times during his or her career. In addition, many workers spend five years or less in each job.
Conservation methods can help save energy and preserve natural resources, but business owners may also be intrigued by the potential cost-savings of conservation. Utility costs vary depending on the size of a business, but the U.S. Small Business Administration notes that prospective business owners must estimate and include such costs when seeking loans to start their businesses. Estimated utility costs can be intimidating, especially for those owners who have never before owned their own businesses. Traditional conservation methods like recycling and reusing are great ways to conserve and save around the office, but business owners also can embrace some other ways to lower their office energy costs while benefitting the planet at the same time.

BRAIN-HEALTHY HABITS TO EMBRACE Cognitive decline is a condition that is often associated with aging, but even middle-aged people can experience memory loss or cognition issues. The Alzheimer’s Association says that more than five million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. By 2050, that number could rise to as high as 16 million people. More than 747,000 Canadians are living with Alzheimer’s or another dementia, says the Canadian Alzheimer’s Association. Although there is no definitive way to prevent dementia, living a long, vibrant life may be possible by encouraging some healthy habits for the brain. It is never too late or too early to begin health and lifestyle changes. Exercise: Becoming more active can improve brain volume, reduce risk for dementia and improve thinking and memory skills. The journal Neurology found that older people who vigorously exercise performed better on cognitive tests than others of the same age, placing them at the equivalent of 10 years younger. Increased blood flow that occurs with physical activity may help generate new neurons in the hippocampus, an area of the brain involved with learning and memory. The Harvard Medical School says aerobic exercise may help improve brain tissue by improving blood flow and reducing the chances of injury to the brain from cholesterol buildup in blood vessels. Quit smoking: The Alzheimer’s Association indicates that evidence shows smoking increases the risk of cognitive decline. Smoking can impair blood flow to the brain and cause small strokes that may damage blood vessels. Eat healthy foods: Foods that are good for the heart and blood vessels also are good for the brain. These include fresh fruits and vegetables,
whole grains, fish-based proteins, unsaturated fats, and foods containing omega-3 fatty acids. Neurologists state that, while research on diet and cognitive function is limited, diets, such as Mediterranean and Mediterranean-DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension), may contribute to a lower risk of cognitive issues. Consume caffeine: Caffeine may help boost memory performance and brain health. A Journal of Nutrition study found people ages 70 and older who consumed more caffeine scored better on tests of mental function than those who consumed less caffeine. Caffeine may help improve attention span, cognitive function and feelings of well-being. Information from Psychology Today also indicates caffeine may help in the storage of dopamine, which can reduce feelings of depression and anxiety. In addition, compounds in cocoa and coffee beans may improve vascular health and help repair cellular damage due to high antioxidant levels. Work the brain: Engaging in mentally stimulating activities can create new brain connections and more backup circuits, states Dr. Joel Salinas, a neurologist at Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital. Working the brain through puzzles, reading and participating in social situations can stimulate the release of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a molecule essential for repairing brain cells and creating connections between them. A good way to combine these lifestyle factors is to take an exercise class with friends, mixing the social, stimulation and exercise recommendations together. Cognitive decline can come with aging, but through healthy habits, people can reduce their risk of memory loss and dementia.
STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * Lisa Jakub, who played teenager Lydia Hilliard in “Mrs. Doubtfire,” was kicked out of her Toronto school for taking the five-month-long film gig. When co-star Robin Williams found out, he wrote a letter to the school asking them to reconsider. School officials framed his letter, but didn’t change their mind about Jakub. EMPLOYMENT
