While many people visit yard sales looking for antiques or other unique items that likely can’t be found at traditional retailers, yard sale shoppers should know that their efforts can be great for the environment. Shoppers can browse through gently used items that no longer serve utility for the seller but may be just what buyers are looking for. Rather than throwing out belongings that get little use, people who organize a sale are reducing their contributions to nearby landfills.

BEE SAFE W HILE GARDENING TO PROTECT POLLINATORS Stinging insects such as bees and w asps play a vital role as pollinators that maintain the national food supply. How ever, a multitude of factors, including the lack of available natural habitats for foraging pollinators, diseases, harmful mites and improper pesticide usage, have threatened pollinator health in recent years. As a result, many people have realized the importanc e of protecting pollinators and even developed gardens geared tow ard providing safe sources of nectar and pollen. The National Pest M anagement Association (NPM A) w ants to remind homeow ners that w hile creating pollinator-friendly habitats is largely beneficial for both people and pollinators, it is important to keep in mind that some stinging insects can pose significant health and safety risks. In fact, stinging insects send an estimated 500,000 people to the hospital every year. People w ith know n allergies to insec t stings or w ith asthma should be espec ially c areful around pollinators, as stings could trigger a potentially lifethreatening reaction. There is also a common myth that bees and w asps can only sting once before they die. This only holds true for some species of stinging insects, and people should alw ays be cautious around hives and nests. If a person comes in close contact w ith a stinging insect, sw atting at it w ill often provoke it to become more aggressive. The best course of action is to remain calm and slow ly w alk in one direction until the insect loses interest. M aintaining a garden that serves as a w elcome oasis for w ild bees or community bees that are being raised by local professionals is a great w ay to protect pollinators. W ithout proper beekeeping training, how ever, homeow ners should never allow stinging insects to take up residence on their property. If a hive is spotted in or around the yard, a pest management professional or professional beekeeper should be contacted to safely remove it and, if possible, move it to a safe location w here the bees can be allow ed to thrive w ithout posing any dangers to the public. If the hive is located in a building, utilizing a professional is also critically important to ensure every part of it is removed; any leftover combs could contain honey that can ferment and cause serious damage, as w ell as attract pests to the property. Use a pencil to sketch your design and then add some color.
Don’t be afraid to use your RUBBER ERASER to design the coolest Easter eggs EVER!
Before the invention of rubber erasers, people used tablets made of wax to remove lead or charcoal marks from paper. Even materials such as sandstone and bread have historically been used to undo writings or scribbles. In 1770, Edward Nairne, an English engineer, went on to develop the first rubber eraser and sold it for three shillings per half-inch cube.

SMART TECHNOLOGY
HOME HEATING & AIR CONDITIONING
Home security: Wi-Fi enabled doorbells with video capabilities allow residents to see who is at the door without having to open it. Cameras can even be accessed remotely, simulating that someone is at home at all times. Never wonder if you’ve locked the door again with smart locks that can be engaged via a smartphone. Make sure that homes are secured or that pets are behaving while out with smart cameras.
NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * A great idea for mini ice packs: Freeze ketchup packets you get from takeout food. They are great for icing small bumps or bug bites.
Reduce energy costs and improve the safety of your home through energy efficiency measures in owned or rented property.
* Spread a teaspoon of peanut butter thinly on a paper plate. Then when the dog is busy with its treat, you can trim its nails. Or sometimes just having it nearby as a promised treat can do the trick to distract your pet. Good luck!

CARE FOR TOOLS PROPERLY Homeowners often choose to save money and learn valuable skills by doing their own home improvement projects. These minor or major renovations are made much more successful by having the right tools for the job. Investing in good tools can be smart, but those tools are only effective if they are accessible and in good repair. Homeowners who emphasize taking care of their tools can make DIY projects that much easier and more rewarding. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

* “One of the things I do each spring (and fall) is to go through my makeup and toss the old items. I also restock my first-aid kit and get new bottles of sunscreen and bug spray to keep in my car kit, so I will always have it around.” -- E.A. in California * Love beans but trying to save a little money? Don’t be intimidated by dry beans; just rinse them and chuck them in the slow cooker. Add water according to package directions and cook on low for up to eight hours. After they cool, you can bag them in freezer-safe, zipper-top bags and freeze them for easy use later. * “On a health kick: Step one is to keep a food and activity diary for a week. You can get an idea of what you eat, what times of the day you are overeating and the areas where you can make improvements. Knowledge is power!” -- V.R. in Oregon * J.D. of Massachusetts writes: Mix 1/2 cup vinegar and a chamomile tea bag in a pan of medium hot water. Let cool slightly and soak feet for up to 10 minutes. When confronted with drainage issues that cannot be remedied by other methods, homeowners may need to install drainage systems. Such systems often employ French drains that are built through or around the perimeter of a property. French drains are typically a trench that contains perforated plastic pipe and is backfilled with gravel. Water runs into these channels and gets swept away by the piping. Do-it-yourselfers may want to try installing drainage systems themselves. However, because excavation is necessary, it’s often best to have the property inspected and marked for utilities, then have the drainage system installed by professionals.
BUILDING PERMITS PROTECT HOMEOWNERS Sometimes work goes as planned even for homeowners who did not obtain the necessary permits. However, years later, when other work needs to be done, inspectors may discover homeowners never secured proper permits and inspections years earlier, leading to fines. Furthermore, if work is done without a permit and an accident occurs, any damages or injuries may not be covered by a homeowner’s insurance policy.

LAWNS BENEFIT FROM AERATION Our 9 editions are published weekly with a total circulation of over 147,000
Compacted soil can have a dramatic effect on grass. Compacted soil blocks oxygen, water and nutrients from reaching the root systems of the turf. That creates a lawn with weak roots, which make grass more vulnerable to disease and compromising its ability to withstand harsh weather, such as summer heat. The buildup of thatch, which is a matted layer of grass clippings and other organic debris that collects on the top of the soil, is one indicator that a lawn could benefit from aeration, a process in which the surface of the lawn is perforated to break up compacted soil and allow oxygen, water and nutrients to reach root systems. Other signs that aeration may be necessary include patches of thin grass, brown spots and a high concentration of clay in the soil.

Aerators can be operated manually, though professionals tend to use motorized aerators. The machines are often heavy, so homeowners should consider their health and physical ability before deciding to aerate on their own. Hiring a professional landscaper who has experience aerating may the quickest and most effective way to restore a lawn to full health.

6772 Route 237 • Byron, NY HOW TO CONSERVE WATER AT HOME
Conservation is an essential component of an eco-friendly lifestyle. Conserving the planet’s natural resources can have a profound impact on the planet, and conserving at home is a great way for men and women to get the ball rolling on their conservation efforts. One of the most effective ways to conserve at home is to reduce water consumption. Few people give much thought to how much water they consume at home, as water bills tend to be considerably lower than other utilities like energy and phone. But even if efforts to conserve water at home may not make a dramatic impact on monthly utility bills, many measures can go a long way toward preserving one of the planet’s most precious resources.
PWRcell, Generac’s fully-integrated solar + battery storage system, stores solar energy that can power your whole home during utility power outages and save you money on your electric bill.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles COVID Phone Scams Thieves and scammers will do nearly anything to help us part with our dollars. In the latest one, as I write this, the thieves want to help me get the free COVID tests the government is sending out. I signed up months ago and received my shipment of four tests. The scammers, however, think I should have more on hand and have offered to help me order them ... for a small handling fee. That handling fee for the free tests? Thirty dollars, and giving them my banking information. No, I don’t think so. We need to be on our toes with these thieves. No matter what topic is on the news, they’ll find a way to turn it into a scam. You might get a call supposedly from a COVID contact tracer who asks too many personal questions, such as for your banking information. You might get a call saying we’re now supposed to get an additional booster and you can be put at the head of the wait list for a small fee. Or you might get a call saying you’re due to get another government relief check, but you have to pay the taxes first out of your checking account. Why, oh why do they target seniors? The answer is that we are perceived to have lots of money and that we’re not likely to report fraud. We’re also, unfortunately, too trusting and too polite. If you don’t recognize the phone number when someone calls, don’t answer. If someone hasn’t left a message, don’t call them back. If someone does get you on the phone and the conversation involves any pressure, time-limited offers or questions about your personal information, hang up. Remember, you are not obligated to be polite! (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

Hello, My name is
(formerly Ani). I was found outside in the winter snow when I was a tiny kitten. My “mom” adopted me through Lollypop Farm four years ago, and now I’m a beautiful, healthy, and happy cat. I love to play and am very inquisitive. I have to know what’s going on in every room of the house. I have a stuffed kitten toy that I love. I often carry her upstairs to the bedroom at night and bring her back down in the morning.

(585) 533-1530 HOW TO KEEP DOGS SAFE AND CONTENT Socialize the pet. Learning how to respond to other dogs and people is an important aspect of canine life. If the pet is to get along with other dogs, it needs to have high exposure to other animals every day and in various scenarios. Socialization can begin as soon as a puppy is immunized and able to venture out with others.
PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM Vets advise that dog owners should be able to easily feel and count dogs’ ribs when they run their fingers across the side of the animal. Pets viewed from above should display an hourglass figure that includes an indentation near the midsection. The absence of this “waist” may indicate a problem. When observing a pet from the side while he or she is standing, a slight upward slope of the stomach should be visible. A low-hanging abdomen means abdominal fat may be present. DEAR GERRY: On the surface, it seems like a good idea. But there are some dangers involved in rehoming cats using these routes. In fact, many publications and some social media sites -- most notably, Facebook -- do not allow posts about pets being available for free or for sale. The danger for pets is that they could go to a home that’s not going to meet their needs, where they may be abused. They may not even go to a home -dogs, puppies and even kittens have been obtained this way by promoters of illegal dog fights, or by others with bad intentions, where they meet a terrible end. For humans, the danger with rehoming via the internet is that the person they’re meeting may be setting them up as a target. Whether to rob them directly or initiate a con job to get even more money out of them, the danger is real. The best ways for Sherrie to get the word out about needing to rehome the cats is to talk directly to friends and relatives, let the veterinarian know and contact the local shelter. More information can be found by searching for “rehoming your pet” at the national Humane Society website (www.humanesociety.org). Send your questions, tips and comments to ask@pawscorner. com. Reborn
Find a Fresh Start this Easter BY AMANDA DUDEK
I
f grocery store shelves are any indication, Easter is here once again. After two pandemic Easters, it is hard not to feel a bit apprehensive at the prospect of a more “normal” holiday. Yet, despite lingering concerns, I believe many of you, like me, are doing your best to prepare for celebration and time together with friends and family. In many ways, new beginnings are what Easter is all about: new life and renewal. Even nature presents a spring slate wiped clean by winter. Still, starting fresh can be hard, especially after negative events and experiences in our lives. The past two years have brought isolation, unexpected loss, and general upheaval. It will take courage, hope, and a heaping dose of optimism to both recover from the last two years and to leave fear in the past, reborn with perhaps a heightened appreciation of everyone and everything we love most.
Struggling to enjoy this festive season? Try these 9 tips! • Recognize healing can’t be rushed. Give yourself time to adjust, noting that it will take time before a sense of safety and security returns. It could be a while before you feel like yourself again, and that’s not only acceptable, but normal. • Ask for help. The pandemic was proof that it’s impossible to go it alone through difficult situations. Don’t hesitate to rely on loved ones as you recover. The MHA notes that social support is crucial when healing from trauma and touts the value of sharing one’s story. Such sharing enables individuals to process their thoughts and feelings. • Embrace healthy behaviors. During the pandemic, many individuals, even those devoted to healthy living prior to 2020, found it difficult to continue engaging in behaviors and activities that promoted their overall health. Embracing these behaviors, which can include eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly and getting sufficient sleep, improves individuals’ ability to cope with stress. Re-establish old routines to restore a sense of structure to daily life that might have gone missing over the last two years.
• Seek professional health care help if necessary. Putting in the work but still struggling? Contact a health care professional. Hundreds of millions of people across the globe have had to confront issues affecting their mental health during the past two years, and health care professionals are prepared and ready to help individuals overcome those issues as the world returns to normalcy. • Dealing with loss? Discuss the death of your loved one. The American Psychological Association (APA) notes that avoiding talking about a deceased loved one can lead to isolation and a disruption in the healing process. Speaking about the death of a loved one can help you understand what happened, and that understanding can facilitate the healing process. • Accept your feelings. The APA notes that it’s normal for grieving individuals to experience a range of emotions, including sadness, anger, and exhaustion. Consider speaking with a licensed mental health professional. Such professionals can recommend various strategies to cope with emotions that can sometimes feel overwhelming. • Celebrate your loved one. The APA recognizes that many people find the anniversaries of a loved one’s death to be especially difficult. The APA recommends individuals use such anniversaries as opportunities to celebrate their loved one’s life. Plant a garden in a loved one’s memory or honor them with a donation to a charity they supported. Such gestures can add some positivity to the anniversary and help in the healing process. • Take part in an activity that meant something to you and your deceased loved one. Doing something in memory of a loved one can help people cope. For example, plant flowers in honor of a deceased parent with whom you shared a love of gardening.
Have a safe, happy, and healthy Easter!

www.salmonorthodontics.com WHAT CAUSES DEPRESSION? Although the cause of depression remains a mystery, certain distinguishing factors are common among those who have the condition. People with clinical depression appear to have physical changes in their brains. In addition, naturally occurring brain chemicals known as neurotransmitters likely play a role in depression. The Mayo Clinic states changes in the function and effect of these neurotransmitters and how they interact with neurocircuits involved in maintaining mood stability may play a significant role in depression and its treatment. In addition to biological factors in the brain, hormones can impact rates of depression or even trigger it. These hormone shifts may be a leading reason why women have higher incidence rates of depression than men. Depression is more common in people whose blood relatives also have the condition. Therefore, those with a family history of depression may be more likely to get it than those without such a connection.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Treat Leg Swelling With Horse Chestnuts? ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 75-year-old male who was diagnosed two years ago with superficial venous insufficiency. Venous ablation was considered, but my cardiologist informed me that it most likely would not improve my condition. Therefore, the best treatment is to wear compression socks and elevate my legs as much as possible. I am following my cardiologist’s advice. I recently read a recommendation to take horse chestnut seed extract (Aesculus hippocastanum) and to look for products that have had the toxic substance esculin removed. I discussed this with my cardiologist’s physician assistant, and she saw no reason not to try it. What do you think? -- M.P. ANSWER: Some years ago, I saw a well-done study showing that horse chestnut extract is an effective treatment for the swelling associated with venous insufficiency. The dose usually studied has been 300 mg of the extract, standardized to 50 mg of escin, twice daily. The side effects noted in studies have been both infrequent and mild, and I have had several patients try it. Unfortunately, my patients’ experiences have not been successful. I don’t know whether that was just bad luck that I had patients who didn’t respond, or whether they did not get an effective medication. One big problem with herbal treatments in the U.S., which are sold as dietary supplements, is that the purity and standardization cannot be guaranteed. They are not well regulated, as compared with pharmaceuticals. I am sure there are ethical manufacturers who follow good practices, but the literature on supplements in general has shown that some products for sale do not contain the amount of the substance they purport to. There is no brand I feel comfortable recommending. Nonetheless, I think it is reasonable to try, especially in combination with standard therapy, which includes compression stockings during the day and at least three sessions of raising the legs above the heart for 30 minutes at a time. ***
Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2022 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

WISDOM TEETH: A WORD TO THE WISE Generally, a person has four wisdom teeth. Although not everyone develops these extra molars, 90 percent of those who do endure an impacted wisdom tooth that cannot break through the gums. Ignoring problem wisdom teeth is inadvisable. Patients may experience symptoms such as swelling in the back of the mouth, restricted jaw movement, and painful chewing. Although the majority of people with wisdom teeth are asymptomatic, wisdom teeth often cause infections, lesions, cysts, tumors, damage to adjacent teeth, and the development of gum disease. Untreated, conditions can escalate and become serious. During a routine office visit, a dentist can detect an erupted or impacted wisdom tooth and may recommend a visit to an oral surgeon who specializes in wisdom teeth.

UNDERSTANDING DEMENTIA Dementia presents itself through various symptoms, and memory loss alone is not enough to lead to a dementia diagnosis. Dementia can affect thinking and social abilities, but the Mayo Clinic notes that some dementias may be reversible. The following are some common symptoms of dementia: • Trouble communicating or finding words. • Difficulty completing complex tasks. • Challenges with planning and organization. • Episodes of confusion and disorientation. • Memory loss, which is often noticed by a third party. • Personality changes that can include agitation, anxiety, inappropriate behavior and even hallucinations. Apart from Alzheimer’s disease, which is a progressive disorder most common in people age 65 and older, there are other types of dementia. The second most common is called “vascular dementia.” This results from damage to vessels that supply blood to the brain. This damage can be the result of stroke, smoking and other blood vessel conditions. Brain imaging can often detect blood vessel problems implicated in vascular dementia. Dementia with Lewy bodies, or DLB, is another dementia that laymen may mistake for Alzheimer’s disease. The Alzheimer’s Association notes that people with DLB often have not only memory loss and cognitive problems common in Alzheimer’s, but they also display initial or early symptoms such as sleep disturbances, well-formed visual hallucinations, slowness, gait imbalance or other Parkinsonian movement features, which can lead to misdiagnosis.

CONSERVE FUEL DURING YOUR DAILY COMMUTE Keep tires properly inflated. Properly inflated tires reduce drag on the engine. Engine drag makes the vehicle work hard to move, and that wastes fuel. But the type of tires a vehicle has also can affect how efficiently it uses fuel. According to the Transportation Research Board, tires that reduce rolling resistance by 10 percent can improve gas mileage by as much as 2 percent. While that figure might seem insignificant, that 2 percent savings can add up to a substantial amount of money for commuters who spend 50 minutes every day getting to and from work.

DID YOU KNOW? Traffic can be bad for your health and also bad for your car. According to a University of Surrey study published in Science Daily, pollution levels inside of cars were found to be 40 percent higher while sitting in traffic jams or at red lights compared to levels in free-flowing traffic. The World Health Organization considers interior car pollution one of the top 10 health risks faced by humans. Health implications are not the only hazard posed by traffic jams. Stop-and-go traffic also takes its toll on vehicles. When idling, engine ventilation systems are at their weakest, warns Road and Travel. As a result, acidic combustion products and incompletely burned fuel in the engine can start to form engine deposits. Over time, such deposits may clog fuel injectors and interfere with the flow of fuel to the combustion chamber. Traffic can age vehicle engines and their braking systems. Using brake fluid and oils for extreme driving conditions may help prevent some damage. Avoiding rush hour is another way to improve personal health and safeguard the condition of the vehicle.

S E V RA Congratulations! Congratulations to the Village of Lima for earning the top Clean Energy award (one of only two in the Finger Lakes Region, the other being Canandaigua)! Not only can these clean energy achievements save village residents money, but the changes will also benefit the environment, helping to move the country into a sustainable future. I believe this was accomplished through bi-partisan efforts of the village board, which shows that beneficial things can happen when people work together. I hope other towns will be encouraged to do the same. The egg hunters met at the Churchville Commons and, led by the Easter Bunny, went up Main Street to Buffalo Road before they proceeded to the Village of Churchville’s Steedman Gazebo. They were then given Goodie Bags, could get an airbrush tattoo, and could guess how many jelly beans were in a gigantic water bottle. We live near the local town fire station. The siren is still activated and blows on average of 10 times each month. It seems that in this day and age of digital devices to be unnecessary noise pollution. We understand that firefighters and police receive alert messages on their phones or devices. The siren can only be heard in the neighborhood of the fire station and no longer serves a purpose. The siren is extremely loud, disturbing neighbors, sleeping babies, animals, and patrons eating at a nextdoor restaurant. It is especially disturbing to those with hearing aids, auditory sensitivity and other medical disorders such as those on the autism spectrum. To some, it is physically painful. Please consider shutting this down. Dear Shopping Fear, While it is sad that you didn’t feel safe enough to speak up when you witnessed something that was wrong, you are focused on the wrong issues. Perhaps instead of focusing on your fear of fellow citizens, you should ask why they needed to steal? Perhaps the cashier decided to keep quiet because she works a full-time job and still can barely afford to feed her family? Between inflation and stagnant wages, the ability to cover basic needs has become impossible for some fellow citizens. On the other end of the spectrum, there are business owners with steadily rising overhead and restrictions that are making it hard to justify remaining in business. Instead of allowing your fear to paralyze you and complaining, perhaps it’s time to pick a side: report the people stealing or ask if you can help cover their tab. Either one of these actions could have a potential ripple effect of positive change in your community.

Puzzle Answers This Week “Hometowns seem to be loved most by the people who used to live in them....” ~ William D. Tammeus
Maybe absence does make the heart grow fonder. We constantly hear celebrities of all kinds referring to their idyllic early years in their hometown. To hear them, one has to wonder why anyone would ever leave such a friendly, fun-filled place. Whatever hometown we come from, of whatever size, we tend to think our future lies elsewhere, in greener pastures beyond a distant fence. Only later do we realize that it wasn’t too bad at home and our affection for the place of our youth increases as the years go by. We believe that a funeral service should be a beautiful experience, helping the bereaved to make a satisfactory adjustment to their loss.

HOW ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGIES ARE HELPING THE DEAF Cochlear implants The NDC notes that cochlear implants are electronic devices that are surgically implanted under the skin behind the ear. Cochlear implants utilize electrodes placed in the cochlea, or inner ear, to stimulate the auditory nerve of individuals who have substantial and permanent hearing loss. The NDC reports that cochlear implants are not necessarily ideal for everyone with significant hearing loss. That’s because no two brains are the same, and it’s difficult to predict how well a given person’s brain will interpret the new auditory signals the implant is sending. In addition, the NDC notes that certain types of hearing loss cannot be remedied with cochlear implants. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

The games were the brainchild of Eunice Kennedy Shriver, who first proposed the idea of nationwide sports contests for young people with intellectual disabilities in November of 1966. Kennedy Shriver had spent years advocating for young people with intellectual disabilities, even opening a summer camp for such youngsters at her home in suburban Washington, D.C. in June of 1962. More than 200 events were offered at the first Special Olympics, including water polo, the 100-yard swim, the 50-yard dash, the broad jump, and the high jump.
