DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My toddlers will not stop tormenting our pets! They chase the cat and pull his tail; they dive-bomb the dog and scare her every time she lays down for a nap. I’m tired of chasing after them and trying to stop them. What else can I do? Lock the pets in another room? -– Susanna Y., Ogden, Utah

Cooped Up Toddlers Keep Tormenting Pets
●
GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111
Page 2
DEAR SUSANNA: Let me ask you this: Why should the pets be punished every time your toddlers misbehave? Your dog should be able to nap peacefully in her own doggie bed, and the cat should be able to sit quietly at the window. That’s the ideal, anyway. I know it’s difficult, especially since all of us are cooped up right now. But, consider that toddlers tend to react just as well to a punishment/reward system as most dogs (and some cats) do, if not more so. Make it clear that your kids are not to torment the pets -- and that if they do, there will be consequences. As to the consequences: What are their favorite things to do? Play with specific toys? Watch certain Netflix Kids cartoons? Eat candy? They may be very young, but threatening to (temporarily) remove one of their favorite activities or snacks can be effective. And of course, there’s always the tried-and-true time out. I wish I had more advice to give you. Chasing around toddlers is truly exhausting. Just try to be firm and make it clear that it’s wrong for them to torment the pets. We’ll all be able to get out of the house soon. Currently, with all the problems that we have, it is good to know that there are good people out there willing to do good. We read or hear about scammers and other people who take advantage of others. Fortunately, they are the minority, even though it does not seem that way. This country is full of good people who are willing to step up and do whatever needs to be done to help their neighbors.
Regarding Painted Rocks. Let me vote for “Tacky”. My neighbor has them, and I get to see them daily. The public park is not the place for them. Keep them in your yard. Not everyone finds them beautiful. A rock in its natural state in a natural setting has a beauty all its own. A pink painted rock, not so much! available for gift ideas, we discovered a great local option. We ordered a custom sign from Metal Monograms and Signs in Springwater, NY. We found them in the Facebook Marketplace and thought that one of their signs would make the perfect gift for a friend. From the moment we contacted them, they were wonderful to work with making the experience easy and enjoyable. We loved that we could order a handcrafted in the USA sign locally and have it completed in a week at a reasonable price. They helped create a perfect metal sign that we know our friend will love and enjoy for many years. If you are looking for a unique creative gift for a special occasion, event or just want to advertise some love, one of their signs would be a great gift idea! it just makes my lawn look that much better. So, keep up with your yard no matter what, and take solace that you are doing what you should be doing. This is for all those people who have such huge egos that they are choosing not to wear masks when in public even though it is now a requirement by the state to do so. You may not care about your own health and well-being, but you have no right to threaten mine with your choices. I can only hope that you or your loved ones do not suffer with this dangerous illness or die from it! How hard is it to cover your nose and mouth when you are outside for a short time? You are nothing more than selfish people who have no concern for anyone but yourself. So sad! To all those people who are wearing the masks---thank you for caring.

Yancey’s Fancy Finds Opportunity for Generosity By Amanda Dudek
E
very year around Mother’s Day, Yancey’s Fancy holds its much anticipated Tent Sale, a huge event held under a very large tent filled with their artisan, gourmet and award-winning cheeses. These delectable delicacies are sold at a hefty discount, $1 a wedge, for example, rather than their $5 or $6 average retail price. This year, due to coronavirus restrictions, Yancey’s Fancy will be not be able to have a tent sale, so they are putting their cheeses to even better use.
Yancey’s Fancy staff crafting its award-winning cheeses! “We have been looking for a better way to utilize the cheeses we usually include in our Tent Sale,” shared Michael Best of Yancey’s Fancy, a New York artisan cheese maker for over 60 years. “This year, the COVID-19 situation has made it impossible to sponsor a large gathering like our annual tent sale. We realized that restrictions on large gatherings are likely to go into the rest of the spring and into early summer and quite possibly, it could go beyond that.” In the face of this loss, Yancey’s Fancy decided to do something they had been wanting to do for years: they decided to donate this enormous amount of cheese to those in need. “We have wanted to get this cheese into the hands of food banks for a while now,” said Best. “We know there are a lot of people out of work and in need right now, so we thought it best to donate what we would have sold at the tent sale to the local food banks and pantries and other charitable organizations that can put the cheese to good and immediate use.” Yancey’s Fancy reached out to FeedMore, an organization which includes food banks in Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Erie, and Niagara Counties and FoodLink. “We saw there was a need and that food banks were starting to ask for donations, so I made a call and asked if we could talk to someone about donating some product,” said Best. “We were referred to FoodLink Rochester. They realized Yancey’s Fancy products include many the amount we had to give, unique and delicious flavors like its and they were more than Steakhouse Onion Aged willing to share with others Cheddar Cheese! like their sister branch in Buffalo.”

Yancey’s Fancy has also been able to help the Meals-on-Wheels program in Alden, which currently serves approximately 80 clients. “Not all Meals-on-Wheels programs are covered under public funding,” explained Best. “The program in Alden is primarily funded through fundraisers. They go and purchase the food themselves. We are hoping they will not have to go Yancey’s Fancy hand dips its and purchase so much of it specialty artisan cheeses! now, resulting in more product on the shelves for others and fewer, shorter trips to the stores for them.” The Alden Meals-on-Wheels program picked up several cases of Yancey’s Fancy cheeses just weeks ago. “They are taking our donated product and cooking with it,” shared Best. “They can turn that product into a lot of meals. They make macaroni and cheese, soups, sandwiches, potato dishes and more. We’re told recipients have been thrilled to receive a premium product.” Yancey’s Fancy isn’t finished giving. FeedMore picked up their first load of donated cheeses two weeks ago, and FoodLink picked theirs up last week. These agencies will continue to pick up while there is need. While recognizing that many are already caring for those in need, Yancey’s Fancy hopes to encourage other companies which have product to reach out and give generously. “We know that our product is going to good places,” said Best. “We are grateful for these opportunities to help those in need during this crisis, and we hope others are inspired to do the same.”

These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale. When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available.

Volunteers… We Need Your Help! Featured Nonprofit: “Our fathers teach us what we should become; our mothers teach us what we are…” ~ Peter Davidson
Bri-Pen Senior Rides
Lucky is the child who has two devoted parents. Guidance from both mother and father may be equally important, but it’s apt to come from slightly different viewpoints. It’s perhaps natural that a father wants to help us amount to something and avoid the troubles that could damage our lives. Mothers want that for us, too, but they’re more likely to be realistic. They are better at helping us to recognize our strengths and weaknesses… to understand our potential in terms of what we really are. You may call on us for advice and guidance such as you would expect from your closest friends. Our goal is to be worthy of your trust. A Happy Mother’s Day to all mothers, from our staff.

Stinging insects such as bees and w asps play a vital role as pollinators that maintain the national food supply. How ever, a multitude of factors, including the lack of available natural habitats for foraging pollinators, diseases, harmful mites and improper pesticide usage, have threatened pollinator health in recent years. As a result, many people have realized the importanc e of protecting pollinators and even developed gardens geared tow ard providing safe sources of nectar and pollen. The National Pest M anagement Association (NPM A) w ants to remind homeow ners that w hile creating pollinator-friendly habitats is largely beneficial for both people and pollinators, it is important to keep in mind that some stinging insects can pose significant health and safety risks. In fact, stinging insects send an estimated 500,000 people to the hospital every year. People w ith know n allergies to insec t stings or w ith asthma should be espec ially c areful around pollinators, as stings could trigger a potentially lifethreatening reaction. There is also a common myth that bees and w asps can only sting once before they die. This only holds true for some species of stinging insects, and people should alw ays be cautious around hives and nests. If a person comes in close contact w ith a stinging insect, sw atting at it w ill often provoke it to become more aggressive. The best course of action is to remain calm and slow ly w alk in one direction until the insect loses interest. M aintaining a garden that serves as a w elcome oasis for w ild bees or community bees that are being raised by local professionals is a great w ay to protect pollinators. W ithout proper beekeeping training, how ever, homeow ners should never allow stinging insects to take up residence on their property. If a hive is spotted in or around the yard, a pest management professional or professional beekeeper should be contacted to safely remove it and, if possible, move it to a safe location w here the bees can be allow ed to thrive w ithout posing any dangers to the public. If the hive is located in a building, utilizing a professional is also critically important to ensure every part of it is removed; any leftover combs could contain honey that can ferment and cause serious damage, as w ell as attract pests to the property. The tradition of Mother’s Day in the United States dates back more than a century to 1908, when West Virginia native Anna Jarvis held a memorial service to honor her mother, who had passed away three years earlier, and all mothers in Grafton, West Virginia. Mother’s Day would ultimately become a national holiday in the United States in 1914, thanks in large part to Jarvis’ campaigning. As Jarvis, who never married and never had children of her own, grew old, she criticized Mother’s Day as overly commercial, even trying to have it removed from the calendar. Those efforts failed, and Mother’s Day remains popular now, more than 100 years after the idea for it was conceived. Page 16

CORRAL ENTRYWAY CLUTTER The entryway to a home is the first thing guests experience when coming inside. It also can be the first place residents drop their belongings after long days at school or work. As a result, entryways can quickly be consumed by clutter. Taming such messes takes a mixture of ingenuity and planning. Homeowners hoping to clear their entryways of clutter must first decide what they want to get out of the space. Will it simply be a decorative spot with photos and other home decor on display? Or is functionality the primary goal? Once that decision has been made, take inventory of which items, such as shoes, keys, umbrellas or coats, need to be in the area, which don’t (i.e., old mail). To make things more organized, rearrange the former while removing the latter. Next it is time to assess storage needs and what’s already available. User-friendly storage items may need to be purchased to make the room as functional as possible.

HOW TO SUPPORT BUSINESSES DURING MANDATORY RESTRICTIONS Recognize that more than food is available for takeout. In response to the COVID-19 outbreak, Governor Andrew Cuomo of New York announced relaxations on laws governing what can and cannot be obtained via takeout, allowing takeout on goods that were previously restricted in regard to takeout. For example, Cuomo announced that the New York State Liquor Authority intended to temporarily relax regulations regarding the takeout and delivery of alcohol. Utilizing such services can be a great way to support local businesses while still adhering to recommendations designed to slow the spread of COVID-19.

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles
Marigold Seeds
Common Warning Signs Of Arthritis Arthritis has name recognition, even among people who are not suffering from it. But despite that recognition, arthritis is not as well understood as one might think. According to the Arthritis Foundation, arthritis is not a single disease, but rather an informal way of referring to joint pain or joint disease. In fact, the term “arthritis” is so wide-ranging that it actually refers to more than 100 types of conditions. Despite that complexity, arthritis often produces four important warning signs, regardless of which type of arthritis a person may have.
How are you doing with your time-filling activities now that so many of us are locked up inside and told not to go out? Have you been able to complete any of your projects? Part of my plan to fill some of the hours in my stay-at-home time was to get a start on flowers for this summer. I planned to get a small seed starter kit and a packet of marigold seeds. I looked forward to seeing the little greenery coming up, a sign of life. My plan went nowhere. Where are all the marigold seeds? While I almost understand why the stores are out of bread and canned beans, who is buying all the flower seeds from nurseries and gardening centers? Granted, I only tried to order from locations in my growing zone, but still ... how can they all be out of stock? Learning how to solve the Rubik's cube didn't go well either, even with the help of multiple YouTube videos that promised to teach how to solve within 30 seconds. Not all my plans have failed so miserably, however. I did manage to finish three French lessons on Duolingo.com. Encouraged by how fast it came to me, I decided to read children's books in French as a way to learn more. The French Experiment (www.thefrenchexperiment.com) offers not only books in French but lessons. As I write this, there are still a handful of states where the governor has not issued mandatory stay at home orders. If you're in one of those states, pretend that you are under restrictions. Your job is to keep yourself healthy. To do that you need to stay at home. Imagine that every other person outside has the virus, because there's a chance that they do and no one knows it yet.
1. Pain The Arthritis Foundation notes that arthritis-related pain may be constant or intermittent. One common misconception about arthritis pain is that it only occurs during or shortly after a body is at rest. However, arthritis-related pain can occur while the body is at rest and is not always triggered by an activity that incorporates a part of the body affected by arthritis. In addition, pain from arthritis can be isolated to one area of the body or affect various parts of the body. 2. Swelling Skin over the joints affected by arthritis may become red and swollen. This skin also may feel warm to the touch. The Arthritis Foundation advises anyone who experiences this swelling for three days or longer or more than three times per month to contact a physician. 3. Stiffness This warning sign is, along with pain, the one that is most often associated with arthritis, even by people who don’t suffer from the condition. Stiffness when waking up in the morning or after long periods of being sedentary, such as sitting at a desk during the workday or taking a long car ride, can be symptomatic of arthritis, especially if the stiffness lasts an hour or longer. 4. Difficulty Moving A Joint The Arthritis Foundation notes that people should not experience difficulty moving, such as when getting out of bed. People who experience such difficulty may have arthritis. People who recognize any of these warning signs should report them to their physicians immediately. Be as specific as possible when describing these symptoms, as specificity can help physicians design the most effective course of treatment. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

CHALLENGES OF GOING REMOTE WITH YOUR BUSINESS CUSTOMER SERVICE: Ensuring customers can seamlessly connect with your business, and your customer service staff in particular, should be a priority when switching to a remote work setting. Remote customer service employees won’t have the direct access to management and fellow team members that they had when working on-site, so business owners can employ central management platforms that make it easy to access information regarding new products and services and previous interactions with and responses to customers. That access can help solve issues while reducing the likelihood of substantial lag time as customer service employees wait to hear from coworkers and managers about how to respond to certain issues.

CHALLENGES OF GOING REMOTE WITH YOUR BUSINESS COMMUNICATION: Communication issues between remote workers can be an easy fix. Even businesses that are facing sudden and forced transitions to remote workerplaces can utilize instant messaging apps like Slack to facilitate immediate communication between employees. This can drive greater efficiency and promote the sense of community among staff that many companies are proud to have fostered.

NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Free up space on your smartphone by setting text messages to auto delete after a certain amount of time, like 30 or 60 days. If you have a friend who loves to send you gifs or endless bitmojis, you might want to have your chuckle, then delete. These image files take up much more space than a text message. * “Baking soda can have a whitening effect on some fabrics and is a good alternative for items that might be sensitive to the harshness of bleach in the washing machine. It’s fantastic for musty items as well. Add a cup of baking soda to a load of towels, then add a cup of vinegar to the rinse water.” -- T.H. in Kansas * Periodically take down curtains and run them through the clothes dryer to dust. If they are not delicate, you can add a couple wool dryer balls to help loosen the dust. Rehang as soon as they are finished to avoid unsightly wrinkles. * “Drop a small item in a hard to reach place? Slip a sock over the end of a vacuum hose attachment and hold to secure. Turn on the vacuum and “suck up” the small item. The suction will hold it in place, but it will not go into the vacuum. Rather, it will be held captive in the sock, which you can simply slip off for retrieval.” -- A.F. in New York * Pet treats for fish? Sure! If you have lettuce in your vegetable crisper, most varieties of fish would enjoy a nibble on a floating piece. Just make sure that you remove any uneaten bits after a day. * “Tired of waiting for that frothy head on your beer or root beer to go down? Stick your finger in it and watch it disappear like magic.” -- K.E. in Idaho

Carnations are popular Mother’s Day flowers, perhaps because they are available in a number of colors. That means it’s highly likely sons, daughters, husbands and others gifting moms this Mother’s Day can find some carnations in Mom’s favorite color. Ask your florist about what each carnation color symbolizes, as each has its own unique meaning. Pink carnations, for example, are believed to symbolize a mother’s love.

Discover The Human Touch In Hearing Technology
TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Off-the-Charts Pain ---
Lakeville 3513 Thomas Dr., Suite 2 Henrietta
DEAR DR. ROACH: Why is pain measured by numbers? I have severe pain, and doctors do not know what to do when I say it is an 11 on a scale of 1-10. My pain can’t be measured by numbers. It depends on the time of day, what I have done during the day and the weather. I have arthritis in most of my joints, specifically my spine and hips. Having had five spine surgeries, epidurals and hip shots, I have pain every day. There is not much more that can be done but to take opioids. It can be hard to make the decision either to take an opioid and go out shopping or for coffee feeling like I am in a vacuum, or to go out in pain. There is no chronic pain support group in my area, and no one can understand how I feel, even the professionals, unless they have gone through it. So when asked how I am, I say “fine.” Other people don’t want to hear about my pain. Why is there not another way the doctor can measure your pain? I have given up everything I love to do in life because of pain. There’s no way to get “better” from pain. -- M.L.D. ANSWER: I am very sorry to hear your story, as it is similar to those I have heard before from people with chronic pain due to many different causes. It is disappointing for me to hear that you haven’t found a pain specialist in your area who seems to care about helping you. Although the 1-10 pain scale is thoroughly entrenched, it has its flaws. The biggest one is that what one person might consider a two, another person might consider a nine. I’ve seen people with horrifying injuries gritting their teeth and saying their pain is a 3 while other people claim their pain from what seems to be a minor condition is a 10 (I had one person tell me the pain from getting his blood pressure taken was a 10). Because pain is subjective, there is no way of standardizing what a person means with their pain rating. However, a 10 on a scale of 1-10 is supposed to be the worst pain imaginable.

Give Back And Feel Rewarded
***
DEAR DR. ROACH: My father, 90, has neuropathy in his feet and legs, and it is very painful. He recently talked to a clinic that is offering stem cell treatment to relieve the pain. The clinic says it helps 85% of those who get the treatment; however, because of HIPAA laws, they don’t provide any referrals. The treatments are very expensive ($16,000), and results are seen in six weeks to six months. Are you familiar with this treatment, and is it effective for most people? Is this something you can recommend? -- D.B. ANSWER: I also have seen advertisements for stem cell treatments for many conditions. For neuropathy in particular, there are no good studies that give an estimate of effectiveness. It may be the case that 85% of people treated at the clinic report improvement. But the risk of a placebo effect is very high with this kind of procedure, and I could not recommend stem cell treatments for neuropathy without better information about the risks, the benefits and how long those benefits might last. ***
Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2020 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Walk away. The APA notes that taking a break from a stressor is one of a handful of healthy techniques that research has indicated is a successful way to reduce stress, both in the short- and long-term. If a project at work is proving especially stressful, step away for a short period of time to do something else, whether it’s to go for a brief walk or converse with a coworker about something unrelated to the project. Avoiding the stress entirely, especially if it’s a work project or a bill that must be paid, is not the answer. But a short break from the stressor and thinking about it can provide a new perspective and time to calm down. The real religion of the world comes from women much more than from men — from mothers most of all, who carry the key of our souls in their bosoms. ~Oliver Wendell Holmes

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) The Lamb is usually excited about taking on a new challenge. But if that’s a touch of doubt you’re feeling, maybe it’s you telling yourself to go slow on this until you learn more about it. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Accepting new commitments when you haven’t yet finished the batch on hand could be a bit rash. Better to ease up on the new ones until you get further along with your current lot. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Try to be more open-minded in working toward a resolution of that standoff between yourself and a colleague or family member. A little flexibility now could work to your advantage later. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Some people might be anxious about your plans. So you need to take time to explain what you expect to do and how you expect do it. And don’t forget to ask for suggestions. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Dealing with an unfamiliar problem can be difficult. The wisest course you can take is to ask for advice from those who have been where you are and have come through it. Good luck. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Tackle a frustrating job problem by considering possibilities you might have ignored before. This reassures colleagues you’re serious about finding a solution, even if it’s not totally yours. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Your balanced approach to life proves to be helpful this week when someone you care for needs your spiritual comfort, while someone else benefits from your toughlove practicality. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Once again, you’re likely to be asked to keep a secret for someone. But do you really want to do so? Be honest with yourself and with your needs before you make any such commitment. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Taking a more direct approach from the more diplomatic one you’ve used before could make a difference in finally resolving a too-long-held disagreement. Try it. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Being asked for advice is flattering to the Sea Goat, who has a habit of saying the right thing. This time, expect someone to be especially impressed and to act on that sentiment. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) With a number of pressures easing, your project could be making a lot more progress than you expected by this time. That’s great news. But don’t let yourself be distracted; stay with it. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) An interesting challenge looms that could be exactly what you’ve been looking for. Discuss this with colleagues who could have much to contribute and who might want to join with you. BORN THIS WEEK: Your heart is always open to offer loving concern for others. And they, in turn, reach out to complete the circle. © 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.
