CREATIVE WAYS FOR SMALL TOWN RESIDENTS TO GIVE BACK

Hometown Events ____________________12

Giving back to one’s community is a great way for men and women to make use of their talents and foster strong towns and cities. Volunteering opportunities abound in big cities, but small town residents may not have as many options as they look for ways to give back.

Kidz Korner ____________________33

Small town residents looking to give back may need to create their own opportunities if the options available to them do not suit their fancies. Contact local schools. Teachers, afterschool caregivers and coaches can always use some helping hands. Contact local schools to determine if there is any way to help out. Prospective volunteers might be able to read to young children, serve as assistant coaches for youngsters’ sports teams or even help tend to playing fields. Small town school budgets tend to be stretched thin, so chances are local educators will welcome citizens looking to pitch in with open arms.

Passages ____________________32 Pet Place ____________________31 Puzzle Answers _____________________11

Start a program through your place of employment. Another way for small town residents to give back to their communities is to begin a mentoring or internship program through their places of employment. Once their employers give the go-ahead, men and women can begin working with local high schools and/or colleges to develop programs that encourage youngsters to gain professional experience that can benefit them as they apply to college or graduate school or prepare to begin their own careers.

Sip & Dine ____________________18 Vibes & Rants ____________________30

Start a volunteering group. Small town residents without much access to volunteering programs can organize groups through their offices or neighborhoods. Organize groups willing to pitch in with charities such as Habitat for Humanity®. Group leaders can arrange transportation to work sites for members of the group while working as liaisons between their community groups and the organizations they choose to work with.

Worship ____________________36

Work with area hospitals. Similar to school districts, many hospitals would struggle to meet their missions of providing compassionate care if not for the contributions of volunteers. Contact area hospitals to learn about volunteering. Some may need volunteers to read to sick children, while others may need help keeping elderly patients company. Small town residents may not have a wealth of volunteering opportunities at their disposal. But with a little creativity, such men and women can still give back to their communities. More and more gyms are taking steps to reduce their carbon footprints, and eco-friendly fitness enthusiasts can look for such facilities before purchasing or renewing their gym memberships. Some efforts gym owners make to reduce the carbon footprint of their facilities include using only ecofriendly, biodegradable cleaning products; installing low-flow toilets, faucets and shower heads in facility restrooms and bathing areas; and installing user-powered cardiovascular machinery that consume considerably less energy than traditional machines. Inquire about a facility’s carbon footprint before purchasing a membership.

Cancer Screenings Save Lives!

LIP CANCER Lip cancer, a type of oral cancer, is most common on the lower lip. While its risk factors include excessive sun exposure (ultraviolet, or UV, light) and tobacco use (particularly pipe smoking), there are “photosensitizing” medications that can also make skin more susceptible to the effects of ultraviolet light. One notable example involves several widely prescribed hypertensive drugs that have been shown to increase the risk of lip cancer as much as four times with long-term use. The five drugs identified as being linked with increased lip cancer risk are lisinopril, nifedipine, and atenolol, as well as hydrochlorothiazide (alone or in combination with triamterene). Patients taking

these drugs may want to step up their sunscreen protection. Your total health is always our concern at BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL. That’s why all new patient exams are so thorough, so we can establish a baseline against which we can measure your future oral profile and progress. And regular professional checkups make it possible to watch for developing concerns and address them while they are still small, before they can turn into something more serious. For an appointment for advanced, gentle dental care, please call us at 585.343.4246, 6 Batavia City Centre.

If your mom is age 40 or older, talk to her about making the time to get her life-saving cancer screenings. No Health Insurance Right Now? We Can Help! Breast, cervical and colorectal cancer screenings are available at NO COST through the Cancer Services Program of the Finger Lakes Region for uninsured women ages 40 and older (& colorectal cancer screenings for the uninsured men they care about, ages 50 and older).

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Blood Pressure Drops When He Stands Up ---

DEAR DR. ROACH: Will you write about orthostatic hypotension? I’ve been told I have this disorder. I’m a retired 86-year-old man in fairly good medical shape. I want to regain my regular activities. My regular doctor put me on labetalol. I think he is researching this a bit himself. This apparently is not a frequent problem. I have found articles about it on the internet, but the medical language is not easy to understand. -- R.T.F. ANSWER: “Orthostatic hypotension” literally means “low blood pressure on standing upright.” It is a symptom, not a diagnosis. There are many medical conditions that can lead to the symptom of orthostatic hypotension, but many people, especially those over 65, have no discernable cause that can be found. On standing, the blood pools in our veins, and the heart and blood vessels need to rapidly adjust to prevent blood pressure from falling too much. Even a brief drop in blood pressure can lead to a sensation of lightheadedness, and to fainting if it is more severe and prolonged. Normally, blood pressure drops about five points, but the body compensates by increasing heart rate and by constricting blood vessels. As we get older, our body’s ability to adapt to rapid changes in position can diminish. Medications, especially beta blockers and antidepressants, interfere with the body’s coping mechanisms. So I am surprised that your doctor is trying labetalol, since it is both a beta and alpha blocker, and it is one of the most notorious causes of orthostatic hypotension. But it can be difficult in older people with high blood pressure to find a medicine that doesn’t make orthostatic hypotension worse. Some general advice may be of benefit. First, don’t try to get up too quickly. If lying down, sit up for a few minutes before trying to stand, to give your body time to adapt. If your doctor says it’s OK, increase salt and water intake. In your case, it might be worth finding someone, like a hypertension expert or a cardiologist, with more expertise in managing orthostatic hypotension. I assure you it is far more common than you might think.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have been experiencing shortness of breath whenever I vacation and walk in the mountains. I was a smoker, but I quit 31 years ago. My doctor sent me for the lung capacity breathing test, and I passed with flying colors. The technician said my number was one of the highest she has seen. This concerns me. Why is it happening? -- N.L. ANSWER: I have two concerns. The first is that lung capacity is a measure of just what it sounds like -- how big the lungs are. When the technician says it’s among the biggest she’s seen, I worry that it’s too big. An elevated lung capacity can go along with emphysema, which can be related to distant smoking or can be due to a condition called alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency. Emphysema can be diagnosed by other components of pulmonary function tests, particularly a test called the DLCO, and confirmed by X-ray or CT. However, breathing problems also might indicate heart problems and anemia, so you might need another visit. On the other hand, there is less oxygen in the thin mountain air, so some degree of shortness of breath might not be abnormal.

THE BIBLE SAYS “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.” (Genesis 1:1) “All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.” ( John 1:3) “For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.” (Colossians 1:16,17) “Know ye that the LORD he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.” (Psalms 100:3) “For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.” (Luke 19:10)

Mother’s Day is right around the corner, and this special holiday serves to honor all those women who devote so much time and effort to their families. While gifts and other trinkets are certainly part of the celebration, a vast majority of children opt to treat Mom to a night out on the town come Mother’s Day. Not only does this give mom a night off from cooking, but also it presents an opportunity to get dressed up and spend time together as a family.

1979 Miss USA Mary Therese Friel Remembers Growing Up In The Finger Lakes By Amanda Dudek

I

f you are looking for 1979 Miss USA Mary Therese Friel, skip London, New York City, Paris and Milan. Most days find Friel in Mendon, a town nestled in the Finger Lakes of Upstate New York. Mary and her husband, Kent, make their home in a renovated barn, complete with a glorious stained-glass window. It is somehow fitting that something so beautiful and serene now fills Friel’s home with the same radiant light it once spread over prayerful worshippers. “I love my home and this area,” said Friel. “This place is magic to me.” Friel traveled extensively upon being crowned Miss USA. “I visited so many places and have seen so much,” said Mary. “From London to Paris, Milan and the beautiful skies of Spain. I have journeyed on camelback to Saudi Arabia. I approached awe-inspiring Pompeii Mary Therese Friel as the 1979 Miss USA in a yacht, sailing with the richest man in the world.” Yet, for all the majestic sights she has seen, Friel prefers the New York countryside. “It is great to go to Brazil and walk the beaches, but I would miss a good snowfall!” she quipped before adding more seriously, “I feel that people who raise their families here – in towns like Canandaigua, Naples, Dansville, Avon – give their children the greatest gift.” She may be a bit partial, being a Pittsford native. “I loved growing up in the Pittsford and Greater Rochester area,” said Mary. “There was always so much to do! We used to go horseback riding. We also would ski, ice skate and build snowmen, especially when I would go with my family to the Adirondack Mountains. We loved watching my father plant his garden each spring.” Friel also fondly recalled another local feature which she still enjoys today. “I loved the Genesee Valley Penny Saver,” Mary said. “I would read it as a child, and it is still one of my favorite papers! I especially enjoy checking Give & Take and leafing through its pages, hunting for leads to vintage finds.” When she was crowned the 1979 Miss USA, Friel rocketed to national prominence. “I was in shock,” Mary recalled. “I didn’t go into it knowing I would win. For me, it was simply what I was meant to do.” She described her pageant beginnings as a Kodak Girl at age 11. “I later entered Miss Finger Lakes and was 1st runner up,” Mary explained. “After returning from college in Miami, I found a letter waiting for me, asking me to be in it again.” She agreed. Ten girls, including Friel, placed in Miss Finger Lakes and were sent to the State of New York pageant in the Catskills. “Another girl was already “Miss Pittsford,” so I became ‘Miss Barge’ for the Erie Canal,” said Mary. Friel’s father quickly pointed out that she had the only one syllable title, and when she was upset over her green bathing suit, her father noted how well the green would complement her hazel eyes. “He could take anything and make it a positive,” said Mary.

Even with Beauty Queen status, success hasn’t changed what is important to Friel. “God, church, family, animals, community, education – all of that was first for me growing up,” said Mary. “I felt like participating in pageants was for them because these things are a gift.” Self-identified as “down to earth,” Friel’s compassion reveals a deeply empathetic soul. “I care so much about everything,” she confided. “I love children, seniors, animals, veterans, the homeless – everyone! God made this world, and we are blessed to live in it. If we were all good to each other, we would take care of the world.” Friel’s life reflects the sincerity of her words. “We support many charitable causes,” she stated. “Through our Comfort Campaign, we annually support FoodLink, Pittsford Food Cupboard, Gary the Happy Pirate, Toys for Tots, Lollypop Farm, Salvation Army, the Red Cross, the Center for Youth through Fashion Week of Rochester, Veterans... It seems like we are always loading up our 1-ton truck to help!” Friel also operates the Mary Therese Modeling Agency’s program You Can Be... as well as its Goodwill Ambassador Program. Along with her faith and her upbringing, an encounter with Mohammed Ali greatly impacted Friel’s life. “When I met Mohammed Ali in 1980, he said, ‘Service to others is the rent we pay for our room in the hereafter.’ That really stuck with me,” said Mary. “He said when you are given the gift of fame or acknowledgement, what really matters is how you use it to help others.” Even Friel’s pets, her “children,” give back to the community. “My rat, ferret, rabbits, two dogs and two cats are all participants in Lollypop Farm’s pet therapy program,” Mary shared, adding that While she has no child of her own, she and Kent work with children all day at their modeling agency. “It is the highlight of our lives,” she said. Friel hopes to encourage other young women with her story. “I hope they read this story and think, ‘If she did it, I can do it, too.’” To learn more about Mary Therese Friel, visit her agency website at www. mtfmodels.com. A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel • On May 9, 1926, according to their claims, American polar explorer Richard E. Byrd and pilot Floyd Bennett fly over the North Pole in a triple-engine Fokker monoplane. However, the discovery in 1996 of Byrd's diary suggests they may have turned back short of the pole because of an oil leak. • On May 8, 1973, in South Dakota, armed members of the American Indian Movement surrender to federal authorities, ending their 71-day siege of Wounded Knee, site of the infamous massacre of 300 Sioux by the U.S. 7th Cavalry in 1890. • On May 11, 1988, Kim Philby, a former British intelligence officer and double agent for the Soviet Union, dies in Moscow. Philby was perhaps the most famous of a group of British government officials who spied for Russia from the 1930s to the 1950s. • On May 7, 1994, Norway's most famous painting, "The Scream" by Edvard Munch, is recovered almost three months after it was stolen from a museum in Oslo. It was recovered undamaged from a hotel about 40 miles away.

See Your Eye Doctor (NAPS)—During May, the National Eye Institute’s (NEI) Healthy Vision Month—or anytime—it’s important to keep your eye on your vision health. After all, the NEI, part of the National Institutes of Health, points out that your eyes deliver 80 percent of the information you take in every day. Keep Your Eyes Healthy To help, Henry Schein Medical and Welch Allyn encourage patients to talk to their primary care physician and ophthalmologist about eight suggestions offered by NEI: • Get an eye exam: Many serious eye diseases don’t have any warning signs—so you could have an eye problem and not know it. Plus, you may not realize you could see better than you do. Getting a comprehensive dilated eye exam is the best way to stay on top of your eye health. • Know your family’s eye health history: Many eye diseases run in families. Talk to your relatives about their eye health. • Protect your eyes—at work and play: About 2,000 people in the United States get a serious work-related eye injury each day. People with sports-related eye injuries end up in the ER every 13 minutes. Wear protective eyewear, such as safety glasses, goggles and safety shields. • Give your eyes a rest: If you spend a lot of time at the computer (or focusing on another specific thing), you may sometimes forget to blink—which can tire out your eyes. Try the 20-20-20 rule: Every 20 minutes, look away and focus about 20 feet in front of you for 20 seconds. • Wear sunglasses (even on cloudy days): They can protect your eyes from the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays. Get a pair that blocks out at least 99 percent of both UVA and UVB radiation. • Eat eye-healthy foods: A diet rich in fruits and vegetables— especially dark leafy greens, such as spinach or kale—is important for keeping your eyes healthy. Research also shows that fish high in omega-3 fatty acids—salmon, tuna and halibut—can help protect your vision. • Stay at a healthy weight: If you’re overweight or obese, you’re more likely to develop diabetes and other health problems that can lead to vision loss. • Get plenty of physical activity: Regular physical activity can protect you from serious eye disease. To help make eye health care easier for everyone, and advance vision health education, patients can benefit from new solutions available to doctors from Henry Schein Medical. One, the Welch Allyn® RetinaVue® 100 Imager care delivery model, helps preserve the vision of patients with diabetes with a simple five-minute eye exam during routine primary care visits. The other, the Welch Allyn Spot™ Vision Screener, is an instrumentbased screening device that can help physicians detect early signs of nearsightedness, farsightedness, blurred vision, unequal refractive power, eye misalignment and unequal pupil size among children as young as 6 months old. Learn More For more information about Healthy Vision Month and other resources, see https://nei.nih.gov/hvm. How t o handle car t rouble w hile driving

AUTO SECTION

Pull over. Don’t panic if an issue arises suddenly. Remain calm and pull over onto the shoulder. The right shoulder is the area for pulling over on most roads, but you may also use the left shoulder on multilane highw ays w ith medians. Try to get as far aw ay from traffic as possible w ithout driving off of level ground, and alw ays use your signals w hen pulling onto the shoulder. If the vehicle can’t make it to the median, put your emergency flashers on and get out of the car, moving aw ay from both the vehic le and traffic . Immediately call for emergency roadside assistance, alerting the authorities if need be.

Inspect t ires bef ore road t rips Look for stow aw ays. Uneven w ear is not the only thing drivers can detect w ith their eyes. In the cou rse of your travels, your tire might have picked up a few stow aw ays, such as nails and screw s that are poking in to the tire. If you find any freeloaders, take your car to your mechanic, as your tires may need to be replaced.

DEFENSIVE DRIVING TIPS (NAPSI)—These five tips can help you be prepared for the perils of the road. 1. Know Your Car. Like people, each car has a unique personality. Some features work better than others, and conditions can cause a vehicle to react a certain way. Knowing your car’s limits and behavior patterns can help you predict how it will respond in certain situations. How long does it take you to stop and how much pressure is required on the brake pedal? What’s your turn radius? Does your vehicle lean when you round a corner? Does it quake when you hit a certain speed? Knowing the answers can help you avoid accidents. 2. Use Extreme Caution During a Lane Change. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that one of the most common causes of two-lane auto accidents is unsafe lane changes. 3. Know Your Blind Spots. Most cars have at least one line of vision that’s not clearly evident in the rearview or side mirrors. Even carefully placed mirrors often cannot cover every possible angle. Move the side mirrors far outward so that the angle of view barely overlaps the view of the rearview mirror. 4. Keep Your Hands on the Wheel. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration now advocates keeping your hands at the 9 and 3 o’clock positions instead of 10 and 2 because of air bags. 5. Keep Up on Maintenance. Routine work on your auto, like oil changes, fluid refills and tire rotations, can make all the difference in your car’s drivability.

A LASTING TRIBUTE TO AMERICAN SOLDIERS (NAPSI)—More than 30 million Americans have served in the United States Army. If you or someone you care about is among them, you can now order a personalized, commemorative brick that will be permanently placed along the pathway to the future National Museum of the United States Army. Making a Museum The National Army Museum is rapidly taking shape at Fort Belvoir, Virginia, just south of Washington, D.C. This national landmark will be the first museum to tell the entire history of the nation’s oldest and largest military service. The massive 185,000-square-foot building will display a collection of Army artifacts, historic documents, and Soldier artwork. The vast majority of these priceless selections have never been seen by the public. “For those who served, the Museum will provide a place of reflection,” said retired Army Chief of Staff, General Gordon R. Sullivan, chairman of the Army Historical Foundation. “For the rest of America, it will be an educational institution that conveys American history through the eyes and stories of Soldiers, teaching our nation how the U.S. Army has shaped nearly every major event in our country’s history.” In the two years since groundbreaking, the building’s frame has been completed, and crews have installed the stainless-steel panels that make up its exterior. Inside, the circular walls of the 300-degree Army Theater are set, and four of the Museum’s largest artifacts are in place. How You Can Be a Part of It The U.S. Army designated the nonprofit Army Historical Foundation to lead the campaign to build the Museum. The Foundation developed the Commemorative Brick Program to raise funds for construction and offer serving Soldiers and Army veterans and their families a way to forever be part of the historic national landmark. The personalized bricks are currently being installed along the pathway leading to the Museum’s main entrance. Made of Mesabi Black granite, the impressive tributes will set the stage for the Museum experience. Individuals and organizations can still order bricks at www.armyhistory. org/bricks. LAWN & LANDSCAPING HOROSCOPE

for the latest deals, behind-the-scenes, sneak peaks, hometown photos & more! @gvpennysaver

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Untangling personal problems might take more time than the impatient Lamb expected. But it’s important to hang in there until all those knotty situations are straightened out. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) You still need to work out last-minute snags in your dealings with a rival. Hold your ground despite a perceived lack of support. Things should turn around before you know it. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Best not to delay preparing for that upcoming family event. The sooner you get things started, the better chance you have of finding potential problems and making needed changes. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) The romantic Moon Child might be reluctant to see the reality behind that “ideal” situation. But by midweek, the practical Crab emerges to help clear away the moonbeams. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Although the Big Cat might be receptive to more “purrsuasion” to get you to agree to a workplace change, make sure you can distinguish the fine line between facts and flattery. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Your positive attitude in the workplace helps to get you noticed by the right people. Now go ahead and use some of that new selfconfidence to help shore up a personal relationship. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Although you might still have to work out some problems with a business partner, things go more smoothly on the home front. An investment opportunity might need more study. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Don’t be reluctant to act on your suspicion. Even if others see nothing wrong, the astute Scorpio could sense an underlying problem that isn’t always obvious on the surface. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A new opportunity presents some obstacles that need to be dealt with as soon as possible. Delaying action in hopes that the problems will go away could be counterproductive. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A friend or family member’s request might carry some hidden factors that could later create problems. Be sure you know all the facts before you make your decision. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A setback in implementing a plan could turn out to be a blessing in disguise. Use the downtime to rework your original concepts and see where changes could be made. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) You might not be consciously fishing for compliments, but admit it -- won’t you feel great when your efforts are noticed? So accept the praise gracefully. You earned it. BORN THIS WEEK: Your love of beauty in your personal life extends to your efforts to protect and preserve the natural world around you. (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

Hand tools and gardening tools usually can be cleaned with rags. If these tools are especially dirty, give them a wash with soap and water. Just be sure to dry the tools thoroughly after washing them. LifeHacker advises wiping down wooden handles on tools with linseed oil to keep them in good repair. Power tools may benefit from compressed air being blown into smaller crevices to dislodge sawdust and other debris. Lubricate any moving parts with a product recommended by the manufacturer. Keeping tools clean and in good repair goes a long way toward safer, more efficient home improvement projects.

On Friday, March 15th, we went to Krony’s as part of our weekend celebration for our 45th anniversary. As usual, the food is mouth-wateringly delicious! I have to credit the fine, outstanding staff that work diligently in the kitchen,

To the person who mentioned political correctness, insensitivity to the majority and the spirit of the season regarding wishing others a Merry Christmas. Acknowledging and respecting the beliefs of others during December is not about being “politically correct.” It is generally accepted that the spirit of the season is about love and generosity. Imposing one’s own personal beliefs on others flies in the face of this spirit. Further what one believes and how one expresses those beliefs is not subject to the “majority rules” system which only applies to elections. By wishing others “Happy Holidays” everyone is included and no one is excluded. It has nothing to do with being offended either, it has to do with equal treatment. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

preparing our food. It was a Friday, so it was busy with quite a steady flow of orders to go. I have to start off with JOEY who always has such a charismatic personality. He takes the time to greet me, no matter how busy he is. Cindy is an inspiration. Charlie was friendly, and as for the rest, I don’t have your names, or can’t recall them. Sorry! Unlike another pizza establishment, you can expect CONSISTENTLY DELICIOUS food, coupled with FAST, COURTEOUS service from a FRIENDLY staff at KRONY’S. It

doesn’t get any better than that!!! THANKS!

Don’t you just love when your doctor’s office calls or leaves a message to verify the day and time of your appointment? It’s nice of them to remind us BUT it’s always followed by, “If you don’t cancel before 24 hours, you’ll be charged a late fee,” or “if you’re 5 minutes late, your appointment will be canceled and rescheduled at a later date.” Remind them of that courtesy call next time you are seen 1 to 2 hours past your appointment time. Suggest maybe a free coffee gift card if they can’t meet their appointment times. Bet you’ll get the “deer in the headlights look.”

Species are dying, and the ozone is damaged. What are we leaving for our children and grandchildren, if anything at all? Recycling and using reusable bags are all well and good, but it will be for nothing if we don’t hold those accountable who are content to kill the earth for the sake of profit. Now, is not the time for complacency; it is time for outrage.

It is so awful to go about everyday tasks with the knowledge that our earth is being destroyed, and all for the sake of greed.

in the doorway of Wal-Mart on Monday, April 29th. I’m so grateful that you were my angels. God Bless You!

I want to thank the secret snow angel in the black truck in Wheatland, who plowed the end of my driveway out all winter. It made it much easier for my regular snow removal person to finish the job-and thank you for cleaning his driveway out to make it easier to get to mine. A BIG THANK YOU to you both!

Thank you to all those who braved the awful weather on Saturday, April 27th, to clean up their community as part of the Livingston County Cleanup Event. Your efforts were noticed and are appreciated. Thank you and kudos!

I would like to thank the kind gentleman and women who helped me up when I fell

a local organization and reporting the inhumane treatment of this defenseless dog.

It is the middle of April, and we are still debating the appropriateness of “Happy Holidays” versus “Merry Christmas?” Let’s move on, people. I appreciate your concern for this mistreated animal, but nothing will change for the poor creature unless someone defends him. Please consider contacting

Greetings... My name is Mister! I’m 11yrs old. I came from Hearthside Cat Rescue. I am king of my castle... just ask my 2 sister dogs. I even play fetch. My favorite thing is to perch on the highest places in the house and get plenty of beauty sleep. It shows doesn’t it?!

PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM

Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

We make it easy for you to GO GREEN… We will recycle your old phone books and magazines.

Many pet owners would never intentionally harm their companion animals. In fact, pet owners often go above and beyond to ensure their animals are well cared for and content. However, many well-meaning people may be inadvertently harming their pets with something they provide each and every day: food. Obesity is on the rise among pets. The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention says that 54 percent of dogs and 59 percent of cats in the United States were categorized as overweight or obese in 2016. That marks an increase from 52.5 percent and 58.3 percent, respectively, from four years ago. The majority of veterinarians think that pet obesity is a significant problem and nearly half of pet owners admit that their vets have discussed a pet’s ideal weight with them during pet health visits.

Simply bring them in to our Avon Office only during regular business hours. Our production team will shred and bundle this paper for trucking to the mill.

Understanding food labels is a great first step toward eating healthy.

“Education is that which remains when one has forgotten everything he learned in school....” ~ Albert Einstein Obviously, Einstein was speaking of so-called higher education. Our basic primary schools teach us to read, write and calculate.... the foundation of all future learning.... and these skills cannot be underestimated. Perhaps the most important thing we learn as we advance in our studies is that we have much more to be learned. The more we learn, the more we appreciate the value and the power of knowledge. We learn that we can never know everything but we also learn that we can find out, from various sources, what we need to know. We recognize that there is sometimes a need for a non-traditional, minimum service. We can supply whatever a family desires at whatever price they feel to be appropriate.

INFLUENTIAL JAZZ MUSICIANS Miles Davis (1926-1991): Compared to other jazz legends, Illinois-born Miles Davis was introduced to music rather late. It wasn’t until Davis was 13 years old that his father introduced him to the trumpet, an introduction that would dramatically alter the course of jazz music. Under the tutelage of local music school director Elwood Buchanan, Davis learned to play the trumpet without vibrato, which Biography.com notes marked a departure from the style of trumpet-playing popular at the time. A true pioneer, Davis is considered one of the most influential figures in the history of jazz and 20th century music.

However, it is helpful to customize your résumé so that it is geared toward the position for which you are applying. A career objective may reflect how you are a strong candidate for each specific job you apply for. Use some specifics that tie into to the particular job or company and you may catch the hiring manager’s attention in the process.
