Owner: My Dog’s Poop Not My Responsibility

Or Leave Message

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * Pineapple works as a natural meat tenderizer. It’s packed with the enzyme bromelain, which breaks down protein chains.

Come in for your cleaning! WHITENING SPECIAL: Opalescence Bleach Kits $79.95 for 10 night supply $40.00 for 4 night supply

www.drkubiniec.com (585) 343-5865 180 Washington Ave, Batavia NY

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I see no reason to pick up my dog’s poop, and I’m tired of being told that it’s my responsibility. I’m a taxpayer, and part of those taxes go toward cleaning the streets. If my dog poops on the curb or the sidewalk, the city should clean it up. That’s what I pay for. I also don’t see why my neighbor gets so upset when my dog poops on her front lawn. It’s all fertilizer. It’s time for big government to do its job and stop making us pick up after our dogs. -- Bill in Burlington DEAR BILL: Well, that’s a poopy attitude. Here’s the simple fact: You are responsible for your dog. Not the city, not your neighbor. Where your dog’s actions impact other people, animals or the environment, it’s your responsibility to minimize or prevent that impact. Dog poop left on the sidewalk, curb or street eventually breaks down, right? Wrong. It gets stepped on by other animals or people, who track fecal bacteria all over the place. It washes into the wastewater system and introduces new bacteria into natural waterways, sickening wildlife. The neighbor’s yard is a no-go zone because it’s their yard, plain and simple. Dog poop or urine can discolor or even burn their grass. Your dog is trespassing. And if you think that letting your dog poop in a park is OK, think again. Would you want a little kid running barefoot in the park to step in that poop? All those problems are minimized when you take along a little baggie (preferably a compostable one), pick up that poop and dispose of it properly. There’s no need to debate this. Pick it up. Send your comments, questions or tips to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

Hi! My name is

MaryJane.

I’m an 11 year old Tug (Terrier & Pug) rescue pup! Here I am having my first driving lesson, I love to go in the car! As soon as I get a dress on I know it’s time for a road trip. I used to visit folks in the nursing home, showing them my tricks. I can shake, high 5, dance and for a blackberry (my favorite treat) I’ll spin around on 2 feet! I’m retired now and spend my days napping, watching tv, barking at anything that moves and eating popcorn.

HEALTH BENEFITS OF AVOCADOS Avocados can promote healthier bones. Because they’re high in vitamin K, a nutrient that is crucial for bone health, avocados may help reduce a person’s risk of developing osteoporosis, a condition characterized by bones becoming fragile and brittle due to loss of tissue. Vitamin K may help improve the intestinal absorption of calcium. That’s a significant benefit, as calcium deficiency has long been associated with a greater risk for osteoporosis.

Cart courtesy Is this a new trend? The last few time I’ve been to the grocery store I see people parking their cart at the end of an aisle (or worse yet in the middle) while they walk away to shop down the aisle. I don’t really get how this is an advantage to them but it certainly is an inconvenience to the rest of us. I don’t feel comfortable touching and moving your things, but I’m not happy waiting for the traffic jam to clear either, so please take your cart with you.

S E V RA Mom, you rock! To my mom and best friend, thank you for giving me the best gifts of all: love, trust and friendship. You rock! Love, Christine You're one great Mom! Thanks for always being there, Mom. We are who we are today (successful, crazy, beautiful, and great moms in our right) thanks to all you taught us. You have our eternal love and gratitude - Squirrel and Moose. To My #1! Mom, every day I wonder how I was blessed with you as mine. You’re the one I aspire to be for my kids. Love you and thank you for everything! -Carmen

Garbage in the fields Anyone traveling on (local road) in (local town) has the joy of seeing all the trash blown into the fields on the east side of (local store). If all this trash were blowing down (local street) in (local town) you know something would be done about it. Local officials do not seem to want to do anything about this, most of them do not even return my phone calls. Where is the public outcry? Where are the environmentalists? This plastic trash will remain in the fields for years to come and the farmer who works these fields could face issues with the trash getting caught in the equipment. Let’s get someone in office who will enforce our local laws. Shame on local officials for not addressing this ongoing problem. - G.G. Update Campaign Signs I wish all those Trump 2020 signs were replaced with Trump 2024. That election is over. You can see how our country is going since the new year started. I’d be happy to see more Trump signs for 2024.

You're a blessing, Mom! Thank you, Mom, for being such a patient teacher, Godly example, great listener, and most of all, for loving me so much! I love you! - Amanda Congrats, COVID vaccinators! For far too long, it was (and still is) a very scary situation with the threat of COVID. Hoping and praying for a vaccine that was on its way and would work was our reality. We now have at least 3 solutions, and yet some people feel that they don't need a vaccine. How quickly our minds change once the threat of extinction eases. Cheers to all who have gotten vaccinated or are about to. That's how we'll get our lives back!

Representatives What about the people/homeowners that don’t have children or a second income to fall back on during this pandemic?

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * C.S.R. in Florida sends this reminder: Pull out the plugs on toasters, microwaves, etc. Appliances still draw a bit of power when not in use but plugged in. * Fasten buttons, zippers and other closures before laundering a garment. This is especially important for any item that includes a hook-and-loop closure. The hooks will catch on other garments, and best case will be filled with lint. Worst case: They can tear at the threads of other items of clothing. * If you have a bunch of your family’s historical documents, make sure you scan them and preserve them for future generations. It’s always nice to forward copies to relatives -- you never know when someone will get involved in genealogy and really want to see those birth records, baptism certificates and baby photos. * You can sharpen knitting needles with a pencil sharpener. You also can use an emery board. Sharp needles work best! * “If you have two pairs of similar slacks -- one navy and one black -- you can put a safety pin through the tag on one of them so you can tell them apart. I have a pin in the navy slacks. They really do look similar until you’re out in the light.” -- T.L. in Virginia * Make chopping walnuts easier: Put some in a bowl, and nest another bowl into it, then rock the top bowl back and forth to crush the walnuts. Pay attention to brake pads. Brake pads that are allowed to wear down can cause damage to the brakes’ rotors and calipers. That damage can prove costly and make things harder on your vehicle. Keep an eye on your vehicle’s brake pads, which are far less expensive to replace than rotors and calipers, and do not allow them to wear down to metal.

RECOGNIZE AND AVOID YOUTH SPORTS INJURIES Repetitive use activities: Swimmers, tennis players, pitchers, and quarterbacks may experience something called a repetitive use injury. This is pain in an area of the body that is used over and over again. Inflammation of muscles and tendons may appear, but repetitive use injuries also may result in stress fractures, which the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases defines as hairline fractures in bones that are subjected to repeated stress. Rest between exercises can help alleviate these types of injuries. Ice, compression, elevation and immobilization may be used if pain is persistent.

IT’S NEVER TOO LATE TO ACHIEVE A HEALTHY WEIGHT (NAPSI)—People often think of the New Year as a time to set new goals for healthy eating and physical activity. But weight management requires ongoing effort, during the holidays and every day. That’s why the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), part of the National Institutes of Health, is promoting simple tips and tools to help Americans start and maintain healthy habits. “Why wait to start improving your health when you can start today?” NIDDK Director Dr. Griffin P. Rodgers said in a statement. “It’s never too soon or too late to achieve a healthy weight.” Reaching and maintaining a healthy weight through healthy food choices and regular physical activity may help lower the risk of developing health problems associated with obesity, such as heart disease, kidney disease and Type 2 diabetes. About 40 percent of adults and 19 percent of children and teens in the United States have obesity, according to recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Continue or establish healthier eating habits, such as reducing the overall calories you consume and limiting your intake of foods and beverages with added sugars, fats and salt. Bringing healthier versions of your favorite dishes to holiday gatherings, and choosing smaller portions of holiday treats and alcohol, may help with managing weight during this time of year. The NIDDK recommends making physical activity a priority for the whole family. Choosing a set time for physical activity and sticking to it may help you manage stress, improve your mood, and give you the energy to tackle your busy schedule. If it’s too cold to walk or run outdoors, take your workout to your favorite mall or indoor sports field. Even if you’re pressed for time, doing some physical activity is better than skipping your workout and doing nothing. Another tip to consider during the holiday season and every day to improve health and manage weight is to reduce screen time and time spent sitting. Watching TV for more than two hours a day has been linked to overweight and obesity. Try creating a holiday-themed playlist and having a dance party. You can have fun dancing alone or with family or friends. To further encourage adults and youth to be active, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services also recently released new Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans. The new Guidelines recommend that adults aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity each week, such as brisk walking or dancing. Youth ages six through 17 need one hour each day, and children ages three through six should be active throughout the day.

Lisa M. D’Angelo

By establishing and sticking to healthy habits, parents, caregivers and youth may achieve better health together during the holiday season and beyond.

Holistic Health Center

To find more tips and resources for weight management and healthy living during the holidays and every day, visit the NIDDK website: https://www. niddk.nih.gov/health-information/weight-management.

CURE!!

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH

• Were you embarrassed this summer to wear sandals or go barefoot because of thick, yellow nails? Now’s the time to get treatment. • If left untreated, fungal toenails can cause: recurring athlete’s foot, infected ingrown toenails (requiring surgery) and discomfort wearing shoes, not to mention their unsightly appearance. • Recent studies show that fungal nail infections lead to a weakened immune system. During times like this we all need to keep our immune systems functioning optimally. • Patients with diabetes, poor circulation, and numbness to their feet can develop more serious complications. • There are safer, new topical medications available to help cure fungal toenails. • A simple one a day pill for 3 months will usually cure fungal toenails within 6-9 months from the start of treatment. • Treatment now may result in clear, thinner nails. • Call now for an appointment to determine if you’re a candidate for this newer treatment.

By Keith Roach, M.D.

There’s No Such Thing as ‘Cure’ for Autism ---

DEAR DR. ROACH: A friend took her autistic son to a clinic in Mexico where he was fed a bleach solution that was supposed to cure his autism, but instead it made him very sick. He was deeply distressed and regressed in his behavior, and there was nothing my friend could do because in Mexico these kinds of clinics are allowed to operate with impunity. Isn’t there some way to stop this kind of thing? -- P.P.L. ANSWER: Before I get into why this story makes me both sad and angry, I want to address autism. Autism is an increasingly diagnosed condition that includes difficulty with social interactions, stereotyped repetitive movements and delayed language skills, although there is a subset of people with autism with no language delay. It’s absolutely critical to recognize that autism is a spectrum condition, ranging from people with profound disabilities to those who are so mildly affected that the diagnosis is very subtle. Correct diagnosis is complicated, even for an expert. Intellectual abilities in autism range from severe cognitive impairment to far abovenormal intelligence. As such, the proper medical care of a person with autism depends on his or her unique situation. Although most people on the autism spectrum need some extra empathy and understanding in order to have the best possible life, people with autism do not need to be “cured.” There is no “cure” for autism, so when you hear a professed “cure,” you should be deeply suspicious. In the case of the bleach solution, it is sadly not just in Mexico where this happens. The Food and Drug Administration had to warn consumers against the use of a product called “miracle mineral solution,” “chlorine dioxide” and other names. It is hard for me to believe the FDA has to warn people not to drink (or make your child drink) a powerful bleaching agent, but there are increasing reports of its use. It causes damage to the intestines, as you correctly note, but may also cause liver failure, nausea and vomiting, and dehydration. There is no evidence that this “treatment” is effective for any condition, even though it is marketed for cancer and HIV as well as autism. This is what makes me angry: I cannot imagine a crime much worse than profiting off of a treatment known to be both dangerous and ineffective. What makes me sad is that I can empathize with parents who have a child with autism who want their child to be more like other children, more “normal.” It takes time to come to grips with the fact that your child is not like others, but that he or she is a unique person who should be loved and accepted for who he or she is. That means finding creative ways to really help your child. There is a wide range of appropriate treatments for people with autism, preferably considered as early as possible, which is why it is so important to make the correct diagnosis quickly in a child with autism. ***

Batavia • 2 State Street • 343-8150 DID YOU KNOW? Testicular cancer is not common, but it does affect about one out of every 250 males at some point in their lifetimes, states the American Cancer Society. The average age at the time of diagnosis of testicular cancer is about 33. Unfortunately, the rate of testicular cancer, at least in the United States, increased over the last several decades, particularly in seminomas. It is important to note that testicular cancer can usually be treated successfully, so the risk of dying from the disease is very low. Still, it is important to discuss risk factors with one’s doctor, alerting physicians to any abnormalities in the testes or during urination, which may indicate a problem.

We Care About

Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy

MOUTH ULCERS Mouth ulcers, small lesions inside the mouth, can be intensely painful. They make eating, drinking, and even talking uncomfortable, so determining the triggers that promote them is important to those who suffer sores frequently. Dental hygiene products that contain sodium laurel sulfate and sensitivity to acidic foods such as citrus, berries, and coffee are known ulcer triggers. Hormonal shifts and deficiency in vitamin B12, zinc, folate, and iron are also possible culprits. Unfortunately, mouth ulcers can also be a sign of more serious conditions including HIV/AIDS, diabetes, celiac disease, or inflammatory bowel disease. Most sores are temporary and heal on their own in a day or so, but others can linger for several weeks.

At BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, our philosophy is not only to treat dental needs, but more importantly, to educate our patients to prevent future problems. To this end, our mission is to provide open and free communication and the highest standard of care in an environment of health, mutual understanding, and respect. We offer complete general dental care, from cleanings to full mouth reconstruction to repair of any damage done by neglect or trauma. We also provide cosmetic dentistry here at 6 Batavia City Centre, for the sunniest smiles possible. Call us at 585.343.4246 for an appointment.

P.S. Repeated, accidental bites to the same place in a person’s mouth or on the tongue can cause mouth ulcers that heal very slowly and leave scar tissue behind.

HOW TO SUPPORT BUSINESSES DURING MANDATORY RESTRICTIONS Recognize that more than food is available for takeout. In response to the COVID-19 outbreak, Governor Andrew Cuomo of New York announced relaxations on laws governing what can and cannot be obtained via takeout, allowing takeout on goods that were previously restricted in regard to takeout. For example, Cuomo announced that the New York State Liquor Authority intended to temporarily relax regulations regarding the takeout and delivery of alcohol. Utilizing such services can be a great way to support local businesses while still adhering to recommendations designed to slow the spread of COVID-19.

UNDERSTANDING LIFE INSURANCE When choosing coverage, you will no doubt be asked if you prefer term insurance or permanent insurance. Term insurance is the least expensive life insurance, and such policies only last for a predetermined number of years. Men and women may purchase life insurance policies if they only want life insurance until they retire or until their children reach adulthood. Permanent insurance is more expensive and will last from the moment you purchase the policy until your death. Many people choose permanent life insurance policies so the money their beneficiaries receive upon their death can be used to pay estate taxes. In addition, there is an investment component to permanent insurance policies, as a portion of the premiums on such policies is invested (policies will spell out how the money is invested) and allowed to grow tax-free so long as the policy is open. Term insurance only provides protection with no investments.

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On May 18, 1917, six weeks after the United States formally entered World War I, Congress passes the Selective Service Act, giving the president the power to draft soldiers. “If you observe people, you’ll realize that the self-made ones have an abundance of working parts....” ~ Bob Talbert Probably everyone admires the self-made person… the one who had a lowly start and no special advantages, yet became a big success by his own, unaided efforts. What is the secret of such achievement? Well, they probably had quick minds and enjoyed good health, but the one thing that always characterizes successful people is their willingness to apply themselves, to work! Without work, few of us would amount to much. It helps to have “an abundance of working parts”. If tragedy should strike at a distant location, call us first. Atrial fibrillation is the most common type of arrhythmia, w hich is a problem w ith the rate or rhythm of the heartbeat during w hich the heart can beat too fast, too slow or w ith an irregular rhythm. Atrial fibrillation, or AF, occurs w hen rapid, disorganized electrical signals cause the atria, w hich consists of the heart’s tw o upper chambers, to contract very fast and irregularly. According to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, w hen a person is suffering from AF, blood begins to pool in his or her atria. W hile that blood pools in the atria, it is not being pumped completely into the heart’s tw o low er chambers, and this prevents the low er and upper chambers from w orking together effectively. Though AF does not alw ays produce noticeable symptoms, some people w ith AF experience chest pain or heart failure, especially w hen the heart rhythm is rapid. AF can increase a person’s risk of stroke, and it may surface periodically or become an ongoing problem that lasts for years.

HOMETOWN SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles What Will We Do With Our Time? What did we really accomplish this past year? We’ve had time, certainly, with all these lockdown days, weeks and months, to do any number of things. After reviewing my year of COVID, I realize that I could have done so much more, had I only known just how long “flattening the curve” was actually going to take. By my calculations, I could have accomplished the following: • Painted every room of the house three times. Yet here I sit with color swatches still taped to the wall where I put them last spring when I thought that interior painting would be a good summer project. • Written 1.25 novels, judging by how long it took to produce the others I never started. Too many other things to do, too many fun events coming up, I thought. Had I known just how much free, quiet and solitary time there was going to be, I would have started on Day One. • Become fluent in French with Duolingo free online lessons. I misjudged the coronavirus, seriously misjudged just how long it would be with us. I was certain that it would be gone by June. Then by September. And here we are, 15 months later, still wearing masks and staying home. I’m determined not to let another year go by with so little to show for it. I’ve picked an interior paint color. Now I’ll order the paint and go collect it curbside at the hardware store. The first file of a new novel is ready, with “Chapter 1” and a first paragraph. It’s a start. My Duolingo account is still there, holding my place where I left off long ago. It’s possible that in a year, we’ll be right where we are now. What will you do with the time?

SOUND CONTROL KEY TO A CALM, RELAXING HOME Inside and out, life can be loud. Retreat from the hustle and bustle of the world by making your home, or specific rooms within it, a calm, relaxing sanctuary. There’s a room in every house that could benefit from greater sound control, whether it’s a home theater, music room, studio, home office, children’s play room, bathroom, mechanical, or laundry room. Insulating properly will allow you to really enjoy your home that much more and achieve a higher level of comfort. Experts suggest selecting a dense insulation with a non-directional fiber structure to combat airborne noise such as music, speech and foot traffic. This insulation material creates an excellent sound barrier that effectively absorbs noise and reduces the transfer of sound waves from one room to another. Its resistance to fire is an added benefit that also adds passive fire protection to your home, a type of fire precaution that is part of the core of the building and will help control fire by limiting its spread. Certain sound dampening measures, such as carpeting, might also help alleviate echo and reverberation, as will acoustic panels that prevent sound reflections throughout a room. With basic DIY skills, you can simply and affordably construct your own acoustic panels using a stone wool rigid board which is effective at reducing the intensity and propagation of noise.

Hesitant to Get a COVID Vaccine? Consider these 5 Vax Facts! BY AMANDA DUDEK

“Should I get a COVID vaccine?”

I

t is a question that everyone seems to be asking themselves these days. We understand that health care is deeply personal (Hello, HIPAA laws!). At the same time, we would like to help our readers make the most informed decisions they can with the most up-to-date information available. We hope this most current information (pulled from the CDC, Yale Health [Yale University], and John Hopkins Medicine [The Johns Hopkins University]) will be helpful as you navigate this new pandemic landscape. As always, consult your health care provider before making any medical decisions, including those related to COVID vaccines. Vaccination protection reduces COVID-19 deaths. Getting vaccinated severely reduces the likelihood that you will contract COVID-19, and even if you do, it greatly reduces the likelihood of severe infection, hospitalization, and death due to COVID-19. According to the CDC, given that the effects of COVID-19 can be so severe, whether to the person who contracted the virus or to those with whom that person comes into contact, the benefits of avoiding infection, or at least lessening it to a great extent far outweigh the “known and potential risks” of the vaccines. While it is true the science studying the effects of COVID-19 vaccinations is young, it does not follow that that science is inaccurate. In fact, as studies continue, the evidence shows that not only are all of the currently authorized vaccines very good at preventing the severe COVID-19 cases, but also that “fully vaccinated people are less likely to be infected without showing any symptoms,” which should reduce the spread of infection. Vaccines create and maintain immunity. Many people are under the impression that if they have already contracted COVID-19, they are immune from future coronavirus infection and do not need a COVID-19 vaccination. However, we just don’t know. Because the virus is new, the CDC finds the length and strength of immunity from infection to be unknown. Furthermore, adds Yale Health, “it’s not known what antibody levels are needed to protect against reinfection.” The most up-to-date information suggests that, “reinfection with the virus that causes COVID-19 is uncommon in the months after initial infection but may increase with time.” In other words, post-coronavirus immunity may weaken, leaving one susceptible to infection. The need to vaccinate for COVID-19 may be similar to the need to vaccinate for the flu: regular and reoccurring to prevent sickness or at least reduce the severity of infection. It should also be noted that one cannot get sick with COVID-19 from a vaccine. “None of the COVID-19 vaccines contain the live virus that causes COVID-19, so a COVID-19 vaccine cannot make you sick with COVID-19,” states the CDC. Johns Hopkins concurs. In fact, this is common among many vaccines. A “dead” sample of the offending virus or disease is introduced into the body. The body, recognizing an intruder, designs and manufactures antibodies to fight it. Should your body ever be introduced to a “live” sample of that same intruder in the future, it is armed and prepared to destroy it. COVID-19 vaccines have been well tested. It has been suggested that since COVID-19 vaccines have received Emergency Use Authorization (EUA), they have not been soundly tested. The CDC insists that it did not skip necessary steps, but rather, that all “routine processes and procedures remain[ed] in place to ensure the safety of any vaccine.” This includes careful testing and continuous monitoring for problems and side effects. None of the original vaccine trials, which have fully independent safety monitoring boards, have reported any serious safety concerns. While the Johnson & Johnson vaccine was temporarily paused on April 13th to investigate a small number (6) reports, the CDC and the FDA announced that this vaccine could resume on April 23rd. The CDC has further determined that people with common allergies “can safely receive the COVID-19 vaccine,” unless the person who

GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

is allergic to specific ingredients within the vaccine itself. Clinical trials for COVID-19 vaccines did not include pregnant women, women who were breastfeeding, or children under 12. However, according to Yale Health, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) does not recommend withholding the COVID-19 vaccine from pregnant and breastfeeding mothers. Also, “early data demonstrated a robust secretion of protective antibodies in the breastmilk of people vaccinated with the mRNA COVID-19 vaccines.” As always, talk with your health care provider before being vaccinated. Quick vaccine development is a good thing. Speed can sometimes be misunderstood as carelessness, but nothing could be further from the truth when it comes to COVID-19 vaccines. In fact, several incredible scientific and technological advancements as well as unprecedented funding, resources, and focus have sped vaccine research and creation efforts like never before. For example, vaccine creation technologies have been in development for years prior to COVID-19. One of these technological marvels, messenger RNA (mRNA), “allows a faster approach than the traditional way vaccines are made,” states Johns Hopkins Medicine. Another time-saving factor was widespread cooperation and information sharing. Social media allowed companies to reach out to the many potential study volunteers which the widespread and highly contagious coronavirus had created. People were eager to help, and these people, as well as many countries, shared information to speed along the vaccine development processes. Finally, vaccine developers conducted some testing stages simultaneously and began manufacturing vaccine supplies in anticipation of approval, all funded in advance by governments recognizing the need for a speedy solution. Vaccine side effects are typically short lived or nonexistent. It should be noted that while some people do not experience any side effects, others do, so everyone should prepare for them accordingly. The CDC states that common side effects on the arm where one gets one’s shot may include pain, redness, and swelling. The rest of one’s body may experience tiredness, headache, muscle pain, chills, fever, and nausea. Johns Hopkins Medicine notes that, if you have had COVID-19 already, the first shot may result in more noticeable side effects; whereas, if you have not had COVID-19, the second shot might result in more noticeable side effects. Be sure to consult your doctor before receiving a COVID-19 vaccine and if you experience vaccination side effects. Love to write? You could earn $25! HOME IMPROVEMENT PREVENT DIY INJURIES

Family of 1 $29,928 Family of 2 $39,144 Family of 3 $48,360 Family of 4 $57,564

Thousands of people try their hands at do-it-yourself home improvement projects every year. Whether working indoors or outdoors, wearing safety gear and exercising caution is a necessity when undertaking any home remodeling project. According to the Home Safety Council, one in five consumers will need medical attention this year as a result of home improvement projects. A 2013 survey by 3M TEKK Protection and the National Safety Council found that more than one-quarter of DIY home improvement projects ended with injuries to homeowners or someone else in the household. Falls from ladders, cuts from power tools and injuries from thrown debris account for many emergency room visits. Accidents involving chemicals and cleaning agents also can occur. Safety should be the utmost priority when renovating, and that means utilizing appropriate safety equipment.

HARDSCAPE AND HOW TO USE IT Choose a theme. The right style allows hardscaping and softscaping materials to work together. For example, homeowners may want to give their yards an eastern feel, complete with a koi pond and decorative bridge or trellis. A formal English garden, however, may include manicured paths with stepping stones and ornate topiaries. Mixing too many styles together can take away from the overall appeal. The pros suggest looking at the overall plan of the design, even if all of the work can’t be completed at once. This way the eventual finished project wil be cohesive.

TREE SERVICES GUIDE TO PROPER TREE PRUNING When deciding how much to prune, less is usually more. All pruning can put some level of stress on the tree and increase its vulnerability to disease and insect infestation. A good rule of thumb is to never prune more than 25 percent of the crown. According to experts at TreeHelp.com, living branches should comprise at least two-thirds the height of the tree. In some instances, the rules may need to be bent if trees are interfering with utility lines or to meet community laws. However, always prune minimally to avoid damaging the tree.

CHALLENGES OF GOING REMOTE WITH YOUR BUSINESS CUSTOMER SERVICE: Ensuring customers can seamlessly connect with your business, and your customer service staff in particular, should be a priority when switching to a remote work setting. Remote customer service employees won’t have the direct access to management and fellow team members that they had when working on-site, so business owners can employ central management platforms that make it easy to access information regarding new products and services and previous interactions with and responses to customers. That access can help solve issues while reducing the likelihood of substantial lag time as customer service employees wait to hear from coworkers and managers about how to respond to certain issues.

Lima, Avon & Caledonia

While many people visit yard sales looking for antiques or other unique items that likely can’t be found at traditional retailers, yard sale shoppers should know that their efforts can be great for the environment. Shoppers can browse through gently used items that no longer serve utility for the seller but may be just what buyers are looking for. Rather than throwing out belongings that get little use, people who organize a sale are reducing their contributions to nearby landfills.

YARD SALE DAYS Exit 9 Flea Market is having yard sale days on May 23rd. Bring your items and sell them all in one day. Many new vendors inside.Come early for the best spot. Please call Claude at 585-734-3789 for availability & pricing.

• Yes, absolutely! • No way!

HOST A SUCCESSFUL YARD SALE Instead of giving away unwanted items that have gathered dust around the house, many people turn to garage and yard sales to transform their clutter into some extra money. Yard sales may not be a “get rich quick” scheme, but they present an environmentally friendly way to clean up a home. What’s more, they can be an ideal way to connect with neighbors and meet new people. Any money earned is an added bonus. Statistics collecting resource Statistics Brain says that roughly 165,000 yard/garage sales take place in the United States each week. Nearly 700,000 people purchase something at those sales, leading to millions of dollars exchanging hands. Page 31

FORTIS SCHOOL OF NURSING AT ALL-STATE CAREER SCHOOL LAUNCHES PRACTICAL NURSING PROGRAM Program Meets Underserved Nursing Need in Philadelphia Area (NAPSI)—By 2030, the baby boomer generation, totaling more than 2.1 million in Pennsylvania, will be over 65. Many will require medical care at nonhospital settings such as long-term care facilities and community health centers. Yet, our country’s ability to care for this population will be impacted by the dwindling number of nurses. In response, All-State Career School, a leading postsecondary institution in Essington, has launched a new Practical Nursing (PN) program to provide a pipeline of support to hospitals and other health care facilities in the South Philadelphia metropolitan area. “One of our goals for this new PN program is to increase the number of well-prepared, professional, caring nurses who can be employed in this community,” said Dr. Sheila Burke, Vice President of Nursing for Education Affiliates. The new Fortis School of Nursing at All-State Career School in Essington is the most recent offering in a network of schools managed by Education Affiliates, Inc., one of the largest nursing education providers in the U.S. The system currently educates over 4,000 nursing students nationwide and operates 29 nursing programs in 10 states. “Southeast Pennsylvania is in dire need of nursing professionals and we’re excited to offer this new program to serve the community,” said Edward Rito, Area Campus President of All-State Career School in Essington. “We look forward to replicating the great success Fortis Institute’s practical nursing programs have experienced at its Scranton campus.” The Fortis School of Nursing at All-State Career School in Essington offers an accredited 60-week practical nursing program. The program was granted initial approval by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing. To learn more about preparing for a career in nursing, contact 610-3621124 for more information.

Many students believe that the next natural step after graduating from high school is to go off to college. Secondary education has become such a common transition that many parents begin saving for college tuition as soon as their children are born. Although college can be the next chapter in a student’s education, many teenagers still choose to attend trade school. Television personality Mike Rowe says the country is in the midst of a skilled labor shortage because workers lack the necessary training to fill the hundreds of thousands of available jobs. Lack of information may drive the notion that trade jobs are nothing more than a backup plan if college doesn’t pan out. However, by realizing that trade jobs, along with short-term vocational training, is a smart investment - and eventually a lucrative career choice - attitudes about trade schools and laborintensive jobs may shift. A great number of college graduates enter the workforce with degrees that may not help them land jobs. And these students typically carry thousands of dollars in tuition debt. Many college grads are underemployed and working in jobs that aren’t even in their fields of study. Career and technical schools help students develop specialized skills that make graduates immediately marketable in their chosen fields, and trade salaries can be very competitive.

BOOST ENERGY AT THE OFFICE Make sure you’re getting enough sleep. Failing to get adequate sleep can have an adverse impact on your career. According to the Division of Sleep Medicine at Harvard Medical School, failure to get enough sleep, even for just one night, can impair a person’s ability to function by affecting his or her ability to focus and access high-level cognitive functions. A panel of experts from sleep, anatomy and physiology, as well as pediatrics, neurology, gerontology and gynecology convened by the National Sleep Foundation in 2015 recommended adults between the ages of 26 and 64 get between seven and nine hours of sleep per night. Make a concerted effort to get more sleep if you’re falling short of those recommended guidelines.

IMPROVE ALERTNESS DURING THE WORKDAY Avoid high-fat foods at lunchtime. Foods that are high in fat should always be avoided thanks to their connection to a host of health problems. Such foods also negatively affect energy levels when consumed in the middle of the day. The University of Rochester Medical Center notes that the body digests and absorbs high-fat foods very slowly. That means workers who eat highfat foods for lunch won’t get the afternoon energy boost that lowfat, healthy lunches will provide.

3154 Main Street, Caledonia NY, 14423 WORKING PARENTS CAN CREATE BETTER WORK-LIFE BALANCE Many working parents struggle to maintain a healthy balance between their responsibilities at work and their obligations to their families. An inability to maintain that healthy balance can have adverse effects on men and women’s careers as well as the relationships they have with their families. A 2015 survey of more than 2,000 adults commissioned by the workplace solution provider Workfront found that 38 percent of survey participants have missed life events because of a bad work-life balance. Access to technology that means work is never too far away might contribute to poor work-life balance, as 57 percent of respondents also acknowledged feeling that technology has ruined the definition of a family dinner. Finding a healthy balance between work and life at home may require a concerted effort on the part of working parents, but there are ways to successfully juggle a career and family.

China refused Clinton’s calls for four days and banned American films and music in protest.

BE SAFE, HEALTHY AND HAPPY IN THE WORKPLACE WHILE PREGNANT The first thing pregnant working women should know is that they have the right to work while pregnant. In the United States, it has been illegal to discriminate against pregnant women in the workplace since 1978, when the Pregnancy Discrimination Act was passed. But in spite of those laws, some employers may be less receptive to their female employees’ pregnancies, with some insisting they harbor good intentions, such as the woman’s safety. Businesses cannot fire employees for being pregnant, and many courts have ruled that decisions about the safety of the woman and fetus are up to the employee and her doctor, not her boss. On the same token, a company cannot refuse to hire a person simply because she’s pregnant.

WORK AT HOME IN COMFORT AND SAFETY (NAPSI) — According to Darrell Smith, executive director of the International Window Film Association, window film makes a lot of sense for homeowners eager to save money on their energy bills. “Solar-control films can block as much as 80 percent of the solar heat coming through glass into a building, decrease the heat load on the air-conditioning system and reduce energy costs,” Smith says. With more people working and studying from home, window film allows in abundant natural sunlight while blocking 99 percent of the sun’s harmful UV rays to better protect the skin (from possible cancer) and eyes (from cataract development), while reducing the fading of floors and furnishings. Smith estimates that 40 to 60 percent of color fading is caused by UV exposure. Windows may also be upgraded for safety, as window film helps to hold glass pieces together if the window is impacted and broken. For even a 3,000 square foot home, window film may be installed in a day or less with minimal disruption. Window film installers clean the glass before installation, keep the work space clean and practice safe contact as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control.
