HEEL SPUR SYNDROME/PLANTAR FASCIITIS is a common problem among people who are active. It starts as a dull intermittent pain in the heel and progresses to a sharp persistent pain. Classically, it is worse in the morning with the first few steps, after sitting, after standing or after walking. • Plantar fasciitis often begins with irritation and tearing of the fibrous band of tissue on the bottom of the foot, which may eventually result in the formation of a heel spur. • Contributing factors: Flat pronated feet, high arched feet, poor shoe support, increase age, sudden weight increase, increased activity level, family tendency. • 95% of our patients’ symptoms are resolved with conservative treatment, avoiding surgical intervention. • We also offer surgical procedures with the best post op success rates using Endoscopic Plantar Fasciotomy techniques (minimal incisions and scarring; often back in a shoe in 1 week).

Batavia Ophthalmology
TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Looks Like Acne, But It’s Not ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: I have never seen anything in your column about sebaceous hyperplasia. I read that it is quite similar to acne and that a person could use an acne treatment to keep the condition in check. Could you give your thoughts on this? -- R.G. ANSWER: Although sebaceous hyperplasia can be mistaken for acne, sebaceous hyperplasia happens mostly to middle-aged adults (or newborns). These bumps appear most commonly on the forehead and cheeks, and have an umbilicus (a small hole) in the center. They are enlargements of the oil-producing sebaceous glands. They happen particularly in people with oily skin. Treatment can be challenging. Reducing dietary fat and using a good-quality skin-care regimen for oily skin may help. Dermatologists can treat these when they are cosmetically important, not because they cause harm in themselves. Although they can be mistaken for basal cell cancers of the skin, they are not cancerous or pre-cancerous. They are mostly treated mechanically, and by that I mean using a surgical technique like cauterization or excision. But these techniques can leave scars. Laser and phototherapy have good cosmetic results but are expensive. Isotretoin, a systemic acne drug with significant side effects, also has been shown in a small study to be effective.
Dr. Peter Paulus, Dr. Eric Wu Providing our community with excellent and compassionate medical, surgical and eye care.
Batavia Ophthalmology 229 Summit St. • Suite 9 Batavia, NY 14020 • 585-344-0933
***
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am currently taking 20 mg of Xarelto daily, and have a screening colonoscopy scheduled soon. The preparation instructions said not to stop taking blood thinners, but didn’t specifically mention Xarelto. I contacted the office and spoke with a scheduler, who said those instructions applied to all blood thinners. Previously, I was told that I would need to go off of blood thinners for five days prior to a colonoscopy. Since this was a contradiction to the instructions from the clinic, I have tried to reach out to other medical sources to see if I could get a consensus on what to do, but no one has responded to me yet. There is a strong history of clotting problems in my family. Would you weigh in on this matter? The last time I had a screening colonoscopy was around 2005, and there weren’t any issues. I realize this is a scope and not surgery, but it has me concerned enough that I am considering putting this off until I can get a satisfactory response. -- B.R. ANSWER: Most screening colonoscopies now are done with patients still on their anticoagulants, although for patients on warfarin (Coumadin), it is preferable for levels to be on the low end of the therapeutic range. This is a standard recommendation by the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. The situation would be different for a high-risk endoscopic procedure, such as removing a large polyp. I have had to deal with this situation many times in my practice, and most often, all anticoagulants are stopped then restarted after the colonoscopy. There are some people who are at such high risk for clots that we use injection medications to prevent blood clots until the night before the procedure, but that is normally reserved for the highest risk of all. It’s a judgment call as to whether to use the injection anticoagulants to prevent clots around the colonoscopy. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. We Care About ut
Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy ORAL HEALTH LINKED TO PNEUMONIA There are more reasons to follow the dentist’s advice to floss and brush twice a day than simply to reduce the risk of developing dental caries and periodontal disease. According to recent research, poor dental hygiene can adversely affect respiratory health. When researchers studied the health of 506 seniors between the ages of 70 and 80, they found that those with the highest bacteria count living on their tongues were most likely to inhale bacteria that led them to develop pneumonia and other respiratory diseases. In 2015, over 540,000 U.S. seniors were diagnosed with pneumonia, and nearly 52,000 died as a result. In addition to getting a pneumonia vaccine, seniors (and others) should focus on preserving their oral health. We are strong believers in the im-

portance of education and preventive care as key components to optimal dental health as well as overall health. That’s why we are focused on a healthy smile as well as a healthy body for all our patients. To achieve these goals, we conduct thorough exams, review medical histories, and provide instruction on proper brushing and flossing techniques. If you are as concerned as we are about healthy teeth and gums, call our office today for an appointment for comprehensive dental care. Located at 6 Batavia City Centre, you can reach us at 585.343.4246. At BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, You Will Have A Positive Experience.

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On May 23, 1911, the New York Public Library, the largest marble structure ever built in the United States, is dedicated in New York City. It took 14 years to complete. The next day some 40,000 people passed through its doors. The collection already consisted of more than a million books. * On May 25, 1927, Robert Ludlum, the author of 21 best-selling thrillers, including the Jason Bourne spy novels, is born in New York City. Ludlum sold more than 300 million books before his death in 2001. * On May 26, 1959, Harvey Haddix of the Pittsburgh Pirates pitches 12 perfect innings against the Milwaukee Braves, only to lose the game on a two-run double in the 13th inning. It was the first time in major-league history that a pitcher threw more than nine perfect innings . * On May 24, 1964, a referee’s call in a soccer match between Peru and Argentina sparks a riot. More than 300 fans were killed and another 500 injured in the violent melee at National Stadium in Lima, Peru.
Good Ideas On Aging Well (NAPS)—May is Older Americans Month! Staying connected to the community is a key ingredient to healthy and successful aging. But for many older adults, staying connected can be difficult. Fortunately, older adults and their caregivers can contact the Eldercare Locator to learn about local programs and resources that can help them stay engaged and active in their communities. Programs funded through the Older Americans Act provide older adults with many ways to stay active and involved in the community. For example, exercise classes, educational programs, volunteer opportunities and other health and wellness activities are available to older adults in communities around the country. Need more help than that? The Eldercare Locator can also connect you to local resources designed to help older adults maintain their independence at home, such as transportation, in-home assistance with daily needs, home modifications and assistance with healthy meals. The Eldercare Locator is a free service of the U.S. Administration for Community Living that is administered through the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging. Contact the Eldercare Locator at (800) 677-1116, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. ET, Monday through Friday and online at eldercare. acl.gov. Older Americans and the people who care for them can get help and advice from experts.

Master
Gardeners How do you get rid of moles in your garden that are eating all your plants? - Diane S. If the animals are actually eating your plants, then they are not moles. Moles eat insects and earthworms in the soil. You probably have voles that can look similar to moles. Voles eat plants. Voles prefer the bark of young fruit trees as well as tender stems, foliage, flowers, seeds and fruits of grasses, sedges and many other herbaceous plants. They will make surface and underground tunnels. Cats, dogs, foxes, skunks and coyotes will eat voles as will some snakes and birds.
from Cornell Cooperative Extension, Livingston County dead. They do not like to be in the open due to the above mentioned predators. You can use live traps but it is illegal in NY to relocate the animals so you will need to kill and bury them on your property. You can use a half inch mesh to surround your garden or individual plants but you will need to bury it 6 to 10 inches or so underground and have it extend about 12 inches above ground. Voles are not much for climbing.
Keep a clean space around your garden. Mow it short or keep it
Is there a good homeDoes mixing coffee made deer repellent? grounds in your soil - Mary R. help with plant growth? I don’t recommend mixing home- Carmen W. For the most part they are as other organic material useful as a mulch on top of the ground or as an amendment to the soil after composting. Earthworms seem attracted to coffee grounds. The aeration of the soil from worm tunnels and recycling of nutrients by the worms eating the grounds and other soil contents will benefit the plants. This and other indications of value are anecdotal so not something to count on. They may or may not have some pest controlling activity.

LIFE IS LOUD—BUT YOU CAN STILL ENJOY A QUIET HOME (NAPSI)—Home life is changing, so sound dampening is more important than ever. Life is getting louder inside and around the home. Televisions, home theaters, computers and video games blare from almost every room. Family cell phones ring or buzz. Life gets loud. So much so, in fact, that the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders says as many as 26 million Americans have high-frequency hearing loss likely caused by exposure to excessive noise. Excessive noise is also linked to tinnitus, sleep deprivation, cardiovascular disease and an increased risk of mental illness. A German study found that depression and anxiety increased as annoyance from noise increased. Fortunately, there can be a way to protect yourself and your family. Your home’s insulation can do more than keep you warm in the winter and cool in the summer. The right kind can help transform your home into a quiet retreat and sanctuary from the outside world. The next time you have the opportunity to reinsulate your home, soundproofing insulation can be an excellent choice to help you escape everyday noise. Stone wool insulation is a top choice for professional recording studios since it’s an excellent acoustic barrier that actually absorbs the sound. One, Rockwool Safe ‘n’ Sound stone wool insulation, is a performance-tested product that provides higher sound absorption against low-frequency (bass) ranges that other types of insulation struggle to block. In addition, it’s: • Easily cut • Noncombustible, with a melting point of approximately 2,150° F • Fire resistant
May 19th
• Not likely to rot or promote the growth of fungi or mildew • Water and moisture resistant. For great soundproofing results, you can install the stone wool insulation in your home theater, basement, home office, laundry room, furnace room and even the washrooms. Its high-density and unique fiber structure reduces noise traveling from one room to another.

FIVE TIPS TO HELP YOU ON THE ROAD TO YOUR NEW HOME (NAPSI)—Whenever you rent a truck to move yourself from one home to another, keeping these five facts in mind can help you and your furniture all arrive in good order and good time. 1. Let time be on your side. When planning your trip, take into account the time of day you intend to travel and likely traffic patterns. Always leave lots of extra time and be aware of possible bottlenecks along the way. 2. Read the agreement. Most truck rental agreements say something like the language from the U.S. Department of Transportation that prohibits the “carrying or hauling of explosives and other dangerous articles.” That means you can’t pack paint, chemicals and cleaning materials, flammable solvents, propane, gasoline and the like. Check with your rental agent if you’re not sure about a particular item. 3. Don’t be blindsided. Trucks have big blind spots, what the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration calls the “No-Zone.” You should know where these areas are, especially when changing lanes or coming to a stop. 4. Know what you’re driving. Make sure you can find and understand the use of all the truck’s switches and gauges. Adjust the seat and side mirrors so they match your height and comfort zone. Also, remember, trucks are taller, wider and may weigh up to 10 times more than the average car, explain the experts on truck rental at Penske, so you have to be extra vigilant. 5. Be sure to insure. Most insurance and credit card companies won’t cover truck rentals under existing policies. If your insurance company is among them, consider signing up for additional coverage options to protect yourself and your belongings. You may feel more confident knowing there is a company that offers free 24/7 emergency roadside assistance. Learn More: For further moving facts and tips, go to www. PenskeTruckRental.com or call (800) GO-PENSKE.

Local Non-Profit Celebrates Nursing Excellence Submitted by Ink Young, Director of Organizational Advancement
N
ational Nurses Week is celebrated annually from May 6, also known as National Nurses Day, through May 12, the birthday of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing. This week is a time for everyone – individuals, employers, other health care professionals, community leaders, and nurses – to recognize the enormous contributions and positive impact of America’s 4 million registered nurses. The theme for National Nurses Week 2019 is “4 Million Reasons to Celebrate.” HomeCare & Hospice is a local non-profit organization that knows the impact and the difference that their nursing staff makes in the community every day. “I am grateful for every single member of our staff, but also especially proud of our nurses who deliver compassion and comfort with every visit, every touch. Our nursing team reflects the very core of our mission. Our communities are well served because of the nursing excellence demonstrated every day at HomeCare & Hospice,” says Carol Mahoney, CEO of HomeCare & Hospice. One of the most recognized representatives of the HomeCare & Hospice nursing team is Ronda Ehman, Senior RN Care Coordinator for the organization, who will celebrate her 30th anniversary as a nurse with the HomeCare & Hospice this coming Fall. “Ronda has been with us through so much of our growth and change. She has been a steadfast, caring and patient teacher of others who have followed her path in home care and hospice. It has been my privilege to work with Ronda these many years and to see all the wonderful things she has done to enhance the care and comfort of our patients. She is a treasure,” Carol Mahoney continues. Mrs. Ehman was with the agency when hospice services started in 1991. Over her years in nursing, she has seen the many advancements in medical science. “50 years ago, when I went to school, there was no cure for lymphoma. Now there are treatments and options for a multitude of conditions,” Mrs. Ehman says, adding that a hospice is a different way of looking at the nursing profession. “As a nurse, you are trained to help people get better. However, as a hospice nurse, someone comes to you with a poor prognosis, and instead you are able to help make their final days better and more comfortable. That is the best part of my job as a nurse.” Nikki Wiseman, Director of Patient Care Quality appreciates all that nurses do. “Our nursing staff are amazing in what they do daily. They go above and beyond to keep HomeCare & Hospice patients in their homes or other places of residence safe, symptom-free, and comfortable. They work as a team to cover all patient needs in the very rugged rural hills of the Southern Tier and Western NY. These nurses travel great distances and sometimes go deep into the woods on dirt roads to get to patient homes or cabins. They make visits day or night to make sure that patients have the care they need, even if it is just to comfort a

It’s an imperfect world we all live in and no doubt we all experience situations that give us good cause to feel hurt sometimes very deeply hurt. Somehow we feel that if we “nurse our grudge” and vow never to forgive the one who hurts us, we are somehow getting even. Actually, such repressed hatreds hurt us much more than anyone else. Even if we fail to understand why someone has acted hatefully toward us, if we can forgive them and forget the incident, we have established control and we will be happier for doing so. We serve all faiths, creeds and fraternal orders with perfectly appropriate services. No one is ever turned away for lack of funds.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) An unexpected development could change the Arian’s perspective on a potential investment. Keep an open mind. Ignore the double talk and act only on the facts. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) A surge of support helps you keep your long-standing commitment to colleagues who rely on you for guidance. Ignore any attempts to get you to ease up on your efforts. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Family continues to be the dominant factor, but career matters also take on new importance. You might even be able to combine elements of the two in some surprising, productive way. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A realistic view of a workplace or personal situation helps you deal with it more constructively once you know where the truth lies. Reserve the weekend for someone special. LEO (July 23 to August 22) As much as you Leos or Leonas might be intrigued by the “sunny” prospects touted for a potential investment, be careful that you don’t allow the glare to blind you to its essential details. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A friend’s problem brings out the Virgo’s nurturing nature in full force. However, don’t go it alone. Allow others to pitch in and help share the responsibilities you’ve assumed. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A business decision might need to be put off until a colleague’s personal matter is resolved. Use this time to work on another business matter that you’ve been anxious to get to. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Relationships (personal or professional) might appear to be stalled because of details that keep cropping up and that need tending to. Be patient. A path begins to clear soon. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A promotion could cause resentment among envious colleagues. But others recognize how hard you worked to earn it, and will be there to support you if you need them. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Handling a delicate personal matter needs both your wisdom and your warmth. Expect some setbacks, but stay with it. The outcome will more than justify your efforts. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Resist the temptation to cut corners just because time is short. Best to move ahead step by step so you don’t overlook anything that might later create time-wasting complications. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Use the good will you recently earned with that wellreceived project to pitch your ideas for a new project. Expect some tough competition, though, from an unlikely source. BORN THIS WEEK: Your love of family extends beyond your personal life to include others to whom you generously extend your care and affection. (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

Thank you to Richard of R.A. Haitz Company. Your company really went above and beyond for me. Everyone was so helpful I would like to alert computer users (seniors and younger users) of a very clever SCAM going around that I fell victim to. I started having trouble accessing my e-mail – the man would say, “Hmm can’t locate that info right now.” Then the screen would teasingly say, “Here’s your e-mail!” Then it would disappear. Then pop-ups would appear from an IT with an 800 number – “Please call us, we see you’re having trouble.” I didn’t call them. Suddenly she was on the phone and had contacted me! “I can see you’re having trouble. It’s an e-mail block! We can fix it! We “clean” it and add an antivirus and protection for just $249.99!! What’s your credit card number?” Like a fool, I gave it to them. It’s so much more convenient they told me. I can have new icons with news channels and an icon just for email. My banker today said he didn’t know why this SCAM company is still in business at all. I should try the 800 # to cancel, but I doubt they would do it. I have to file

What kind of people would take advantage of a Retired United States Army Veteran? Obviously, it’s the kind of people who have no morals or conscience. The audacity and greed of this particular landlord and his wife, knowing what they have been doing for the past 6 years. These two individuals live in our very own community. You know who you are, and you both should be ashamed of yourselves. And why are landlords not held accountable for their rental property? In particular, privately owned residences with apartments or houses. They should be up to code; not every landlord complies with the law. It’s a terrible injustice when a landlord can avoid fines and penalties for providing substandard rental units. Can someone enlighten me with some legal information pertaining to this topic? #CARMA
