DID YOU KNOW? The demand for qualified, talented nurses figures to grow in the years to come.According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, more than half a million nurses are expected to retire by 2022. Couple that with an existing nursing shortage, and the BLS projects a need for 1.1 million registered nurses in the near future. A shortage also figures to affect Canada, where the Canadian Nurses Association recently estimated that the country would be forced to confront a nursing shortage of roughly 60,000 nurses by 2022. Various factors are contributing to the nursing shortage in both countries, including an increasingly large aging population that will require more and more nurses to meet its health care needs. In the United States, the Affordable Care Act, which was passed in 2010, increased access to health care for millions of people across the country, thereby creating a greater need for nurses and other health care professionals. In addition, a greater emphasis on preventive care in many countries across the globe figures to compel more people to visit their physicians even when they’re otherwise feeling healthy. As more people prioritize preventive care, the need for more nurses will likely increase.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I have so many thoughts a er reading the letter from the woman with the shared driveway whose neighbor leaves her dog’s poop on her side.

I’m of the opinion that life would be more enjoyable if people learned to meet others where they are. e dog owner clearly doesn’t want to pick up her dog’s poop, and I don’t think checking with an HOA or municipal ordinance will change that. Maybe she has mobility issues. e writer says she and her neighbor “get along ne,” and there’s a LOT to be said for that. If I were her, I would simply buy poop bags and clean up a er the dog. If the neighbor sees her and says something, I would say: “I’ve asked that you pick up a er your dog, but I don’t want that to become a big issue between us because we get along so well. Your friendship means more to me than my taking a few minutes to clean up the driveway.” -- Susan W., via email

I have had this issue several times in the past. I have successfully resolved this issue every time it has come up.

I used a new tool to solve it -- the power of social media. My solution was simple: When I observed an individual allowing their canine to defecate on my property, I announced loudly from my front door that if they did not clean it up, I would locate their property and defecate on theirs as well. I made the same announcement on the neighborhood’s Facebook page.

SPRING CLEANING PROJECTS YOU DON’T WANT TO FORGET

FURNITURE: It’s easy to overlook furniture when tackling spring cleaning, but dust and dirt can quickly accumulate on couches and chairs over the course of winter. When possible, vacuum furniture to remove any debris that might have accumulated while windows and doors were kept shut, and shampoo any cushions or seat covers that don’t pass the smell test.

TIPS FOR STAYING SAFE DURING SPRING BREAK

It’s that time of year again when thousands of college students and young adults will flock to the far reaches of the world for spring break. Wherever your travels take you, it’s best to adopt the Boy Scout’s motto,”Be Prepared.”

1. Arrive safely. Traffic death rates are three times higher at night than during the day. This means an all-night drive to Florida or any other sunny locale is not a good idea. If you can’t avoid night driving, have someone stay up to talk you.

2. Secure your hotel room.Make sure your door is locked and important belongings like passports and wallets are in the safe.

3. Ensure you know the name of your hotel. Memorize the hotel’s address, and take a card to give cab drivers (especially if you don’t know the language).

4. Protect your personal information. Don’t tell new acquaintances your hotel name or room number. You never know who has innocent (or notso-innocent) intentions.

5. Employ the buddy system. Never leave a party with a stranger, but if you do, consider carrying a pepper gel key ring with you.

6. Practice safe drinking. Always have one friend who plans on minimal drinking to look out for everyone and watch cups and glasses as well. Only accept drinks you’ve watched get made or poured in front of you.

7. Ask for help. If you need help, call yourself. Don’t rely on bystanders to call for you.

8. Drink water and wear sunscreen. Too much time in the sun can leave you dehydrated and at risk for sunburn or sun poisoning. Take a water bottle and sunscreen when you go out.

TECH TO TAKE ALONG ON YOUR NEXT ROAD TRIP Chargers: Many people feel their devices are extensions of themselves, but such devices won’t be of much help if they are routinely running out of power. Bring along several chargers that can be plugged into your car so you and your passengers can keep your smartphones and other devices running throughout the trip. Though the idea of going off the grid might seem enticing, leaving the world behind is less romantic when you need roadside assistance or are in search of a restroom or a place to pull over and grab a meal. If you want to disconnect from the world, you can always switch your phone to airplane mode. But keeping the phone charged can help in case of emergency.

When it comes to vehicle maintenance, the rule of two has long reigned among professional automotive technicians and driving safety advocates. How can I keep my plants from being eaten by Japanese beetles? I lost so much over the last 2 years. How can I prepare or prevent Japanese beetles invading our blueberry bushes and one of our trees?

Japanese beetles are not easy to control. Garden centers sell traps that contain a substance attractive to these pests, but often the traps will attract more beetles to your yard. If you decide to try one, place it at least 30 feet away from your attractive plants, and make sure the prevailing wind blows the trap scent away from your plants.

These beetles are large and slowmoving, so they aren’t difficult to remove by hand. I just push them off the leaf into a coffee can of soapy water. Do this every day, or as often as you can, and damage will be reduced. The presence of beetles attracts more beetles, so you can make a big difference, though it’s time-consuming.

I tried covering my plants one year with nylon netting, sold in fabric stores. I used clothes pins to attach it snugly, but they crawled up inside the netting from the bottom.

Prescription Costs

$500 for a Month’s Supply

DEAR DR. ROACH: What can you tell me about a prescription of 145 mcg of Linzess, and why a doctor would prescribe a pill over $500? What are the advantages to taking this? Surely, there must be something less expensive that will provide the same results. -- J.P.

ANSWER: Linaclotide (Linzess or Constella) is a medicine used for constipation, either in people with irritable bowel syndrome or in people with constipation for no particular reason. It works by activating a protein to allow chloride and bicarbonate (along with fluid) into the intestine. Since it is not absorbed into the body, it has few side effects. The major side effect is that it can work too well and cause diarrhea. This is enough of a concern that the medicine is not used in children under the age of 2. There are three different strengths: 72, 145 and 290 mcg.

If you are asking me to defend pharmaceutical pricing, I can’t do that. I very seldom use this medicine because there are so many other options for constipation -- starting with a different diet without using any medicine at all. But in people with occasional constipation despite having a good diet, I usually start with fiber supplements. If those don’t work, I recommend a surfactant such as docusate (Colace), which allows more water to enter the stool. Yet another option would be nonabsorbable substances like polyethylene glycol (MiraLAX and others), lactulose, sorbitol and magnesium. All of these are much less expensive. However, there are still people who don’t do well with any of these less-expensive (and also tried-andtrue) alternatives. Linzess has made a real difference in the lives of several of my patients. It is usually prescribed by an expert (a gastroenterologist) at least in the case of my patients.

Finally, Linzess is roughly $20 a pill or about $500 for a month’s supply in the U.S. without insurance. Some people only need it occasionally and are very willing to pay, even if insurance doesn’t cover it.

How to protect

Professionals recommend you reapply sunscreen every two hours. You should not rely solely on sunscreen to protect your skin. Wear suitable clothing to increaseyourprotectionandfindaspotin the shade when the sun is at its hottest.

HELPING KIDS FIND HOBBIES

Much like adults can benefit from participating in hobbies, children can reap rewards from engaging in hobbies. According to the Child Development Institute, hobbies give children a chance to express themselves. The CDI also notes that hobbies can play an important role in children’s self-discovery and boost their self-esteem.

Some children may discover hobbies on their own, requiring little if any assistance on the part of their parents. For example, some kids may display an interest in music that parents, even those with no such musical inclination, can foster by purchasing certain instruments. But some children may need a little more prompting, and parents of such boys and girls can take certain steps to help their youngsters find rewarding hobbies.

Involve kids in your own hobbies. Kids look up to their parents and often want to emulate what their mothers and fathers do. If possible, involve children in your own hobbies. Gardeners can teach their youngsters how to grow and tend to a garden, while painters can host family painting nights where everyone is encouraged to create their own masterpiece. Parents whose hobbies are more adult-oriented, like woodworking, can still involve their children. For example, work with children to design a new item, then show them how the item goes from paper to finished product; just avoid allowing them to use any unsafe tools or machines.

Let kids choose an activity. While some children might take to hobbies their parents favor, others might need to be given some freedom to find their own activities. Afford youngsters this chance, recognizing that it might take some time before kids find an activity that genuinely sparks their passion.

Be a source of encouragement. Some hobbies may prove more difficult than kids first imagined, requiring some perseverance before they can be enjoyed fully. In such instances, observe youngsters while they engage in the activity. If they appear to be enjoying themselves but are periodically frustrated, encourage them to keep trying. If kids appear to be disinterested in overcoming any struggles, then they might benefit by pursuing another hobby.

Don’thesitatetofocusonfun.Hobbiescanteachkidsvaluablelessonsand provide a sense of fulfillment, but it’s important that parents not overlook the importance of fun in regard to their children’s hobbies. Hobbies can provide children with the same respite from busy schedules that they do adults, and that break should be as fun as possible.

Better Function in Bathrooms

Often when people develop mobility or dexterity issues, they find their existing bathrooms are not in a convenient location in the house, or aren’t configured with safety in mind. They may need to add a bathroom in a small space or reconfigure the ones they have. When renovating an existing bath or creating a new bathroom where one did not previously exist, homeowners should keep key considerations in mind.

Multiple light sources can help reduce glare and shadows - two dangerous visual effects in bathrooms, where most home falls occur. Flooring material should be slip-resistant and grab bars are essential in showers, bath tubs and near toilets. Shower heads should be on a slide bar that allows the spray to be raised or lowered depending on the needs and height of the user. Showers and faucets should be controlled by levers, rather than knobs, and all showers should have thermostatic controls to reduce the risk of burns.

May 31st is World Otter Day. Zoos around the world celebrate their otters. Rochester’s Seneca Park Zoo celebrates the whole weekend, with talks, demos, and videos throughout the days. Enjoy enrichment behind the scenes and check out the fundraiser for the River Otter Ecology Project. Watch as a zookeeper puts a canvas with paint next to it and uses food to incentivize the otters trekking through the paint to create a unique painting as the keeper slides the canvas under them.

Donato DiRenzo, Seneca Park’s Communications Coordinator, coordinated a meeting with General Curator David Hamilton and Zookeeper Catina Wright. Hamilton began as a zookeeper working with primates at the Knoxville Zoo. He then became a carnivore keeper and started working with otters. A er that, he took the position as Studbook Keeper, managing the population and tracking the family tree and locations of North American River Otters for the past 24 years.

Most of Seneca Park’s sta have degrees in life sciences, such as biology or zoology. Zookeeper, Catina Wright, has been at Seneca Park for 18 years, ve years as a volunteerthenjoinedthezookeeper ranks a er she earned her bachelor’s degree in biology. Every two years there is an otter keeper workshop, exploring vet care, diet, enrichment, and enclosure types and exhibits.

Otters are motivated, food driven, and highly intelligent. ere are seven di erent subspecies of otters. Ashkii and Sailor are the two living at Seneca Park Zoo. ey have di erent personalities. Ashkii was born in 2016 and came to Rochester from the National Zoo in March 2020. She is at once skittish, cautious, and very energetic, always swimming and playing.

Sailor was born in 2007. He came to Seneca Park in May 2012 from a private facility in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. He is more laid back and adventurous. Sailor was named in honor of a previously nauticalnamed otter, Admiral. e average life expectancy of an otter is 12 years, but Admiral lived to age 21, which is comparable to a human living to 100.

Watching Ashkii and Sailor in their element is exciting. Otters need enriching activities. Seneca Park includes a wide variety of enrichment, including hammocks, swinging baskets, and hollow logs. As we chat, Wright tosses sh encased in ice cubes in the water. e otters eat mostly sh, mackerel, herring, and salmon. Occasionally, they get ounder, tilapia, clams, squid, scallops, and so shell crab. ey also eat other meats, fruits, vegetables, and hard-boiled eggs. Otters are carnivores but eat some produce, preferring vegetables over fruit.

is super red compared to other animals that are pinkish. Otters have special kidneys because they’ve been in marine habitats. It helps them deal with salt water.”

Otters don’t have a blubber layer like marine animals. eir coat is double layered, keeping air trapped in the hairs, insulating them from getting wet. eir skin isn’t necessarily wet when they are swimming because they have outer guard hairs and inner u y layers.

Hamilton is involved in otter breeding and transfer plans. ere is a signature Species Survival Plan (SSP) for North American River Otters. is information prevents inbreeding by knowing who is who and where otters are from. Gene diversity is crucial for breeding.

Researchers perform genetic studies of the otters to help otters survive and avoid extinction. North American River Otters in Western New York almost disappeared due to predators and hunters encroaching on their habitat. ankfully, the Department of Environmental Conservation and Seneca Park Zoo supported otter repopulation.

Seneca Park Zoo featured the otters in a viral Earth Day recycling video (youtube.com/watch?v=7DyxQD0oBao), in which they trained to put newspaper and bottles into recycling bins to help show people to recycle and not trash rivers. It helps everyone, including otters, when we clean up the environment and be careful what goes down storm drains.

Last week I took my Tacoma to the new oil change place in [local town]. They offer a free state inspection. The next morning I noticed that one of my hubcaps was missing. I checked the inspection report and this hubcap belonged to one of the wheels they removed, When I checked the other wheel they removed, it was not installed properly. I returned to the location and was told "it sometimes happens" and that they "installed them properly.” If they cannot install hub caps properly I would not trust them to touch my engine. Tacoma hubcaps do not fall off if they are installed properly.

Saved The Runaways!

A few days ago our 2 young dogs pushed their way out of the house and took off like a shot. Within seconds they were a few acres away and out of sight. The next thing we knew there were several vehicles stopped on the road including a contractor who was using their lights to alert other drivers. The dogs were with them and came when we called. I was so busy getting the dogs back to the house, I did not even acknowledge those who helped. So, whoever you are, thank you so much for your role in getting the "kids" back to us. That was a real kindness. Thank you, thank you, thank you and God Bless you!!

Regarding the rant about the maintenance at the local cemtery. Being a caretaker of one, I wondered when the last time they donated was. Most small town cemeteries are struggling to get the funds to mow, weed eat, and for maintenance. People spend big money on flowers. How good are they going to look if you can't see them with the grass taller than the headstones. Please donate to your local cemetery. Your loved ones are there along with veterans.

Annoying Dogs

Living in town can be a challenge during the summer months with loud lawn mowers, weed eaters, power washers, etc. But those sounds are to be expected. My complaint is people who tie their dogs outside for hours on end. The dogs literally bark nonstop. Is there no law against this? It is difficult to enjoy gardening or just simply relaxing and enjoying a conversation with a friend with a dog barking constantly. Why do people do this? It can't be good for the dog and it certainly is annoying to nearby neighbors. Please stop leaving dogs tied outside if they are going to bark all day!
