DID YOU KNOW? According to the American Osteopathic Association, one in five teenagers will now experience some form of hearing loss. That rate is roughly 30 percent higher than it was 20 years ago. Though various factors have contributed to that increase, the AOA notes that many experts believe an increased use of headphones among teenagers is partly to blame. Listening to headphones at high volumes for extended periods of time can lead to lifelong hearing loss for children and teens. Parents can encourage children and teenagers to listen to music at reasonable levels when using their headphones, and one effective way to control volume without sacrificing sound is to use over-the-ear headphones instead of earbuds. The Cleveland Clinic notes that over-theear headphones are generally more effective than earbuds at cancelling outside noise. That allows over-the-ear headphone users to listen to music at lower volumes, which can significantly reduce their risk for noise-induced hearing loss.

DID YOU KNOW? According to the National Autism Association, autism is a bio-neurological developmental disability that
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’ve been waiting more than three months to get my dog “Maisie” in for a regular checkup and shots. The veterinarian’s office says they are running behind and had to delay her appointment. Talking to a friend across the country this week, I learned that they are waiting months to get their pets to the vet as well. Is this a national trend? -- Cheryl K.
affects the normal development of the brain in various areas. Those areas include social interaction, communication skills and cognitive function. Autism generally appears before a child reaches his or her third birthday, and the NAA notes it is diagnosed four times as often in boys than it is in girls. Roughly 40 percent of children with autism do not speak, but parents whose children speak between the ages of 12 and 18 months should know that such youngsters can still ultimately be diagnosed with autism. In such instances, the NAA notes that children lose the words they previously learned. Incidences of autism appear to be on the rise, though the reasons for that remain unclear. According to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the prevalence of autism had risen to one in every 59 children by 2018. That’s twice as great as the rate in 2004, when the CDC reported one in 125 children were diagnosed with autism.
DEAR CHERYL: Unfortunately, it is, especially in major metropolitan areas. The wait for a vet appointment was already lengthening before 2020. After months of waiting, pet owners are all trying to get caught up on checkups and vaccinations. Many more people adopted pets during the lockdown in 2020 to keep them company. And many pandemic restrictions, such as building occupancy limits, are still in place. Add to this a chronic shortage of veterinarians -- an industry that sees some 2,000 vets leaving every year, citing a poor work-life balance. That’s twice the rate of physicians quitting their profession, says the American Veterinary Medical Association. And the lower availability of vet appointments can be seasonal. For large animal vet practices (which deal with livestock, horses, cattle, etc.), spring is their busiest season with calving and foaling taking place. The warm weather reminds pet owners to take their companion pets to the vet as well. Until the wave of catch-up appointments subsides, just be patient. Keep the appointment that is already set with the veterinarian and schedule Maisie’s checkup for next year, if possible. Send your tips, comments and questions to ask@pawscorner.com. WHAT SMALL BUSINESSES CAN DO TO ENGAGE THEIR COMMUNITIES Sponsor a local youth sports team: Youth sports team sponsorships are a relatively inexpensive way to create brand awareness. The National Alliance for Youth Sports, Inc., reports that sponsorship costs vary from organization to organization, though they may cost as little as $100 to around $5,000 for the season. In return for that investment, businesses gain exposure to athletes, athletes’ families and friends, volunteers, and countless others who may see players in uniform on game day. When compared to the cost of advertising online, on television or on the radio, youth sports sponsorship provides a great return on investment.

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Need a patch for old woodwork? Try mixing paint (whatever color you’re using) and flour. Make a paste, fill in the holes and let dry. It’s hard like cement, and can be sanded into shape if necessary. * Use baking soda to scrub away stuck-on food on your grill. Sprinkle it on the metal brush, and scrub away. If your grate is beyond the power of fire and baking soda, remove it and lay it on the ground on some newspaper. Spray with oven cleaner and let sit (keep pets and kids away from it). Rinse with a garden hose and replace on the grill.

* When you get near the end of a roll of paper towels, save it to put in your car. Put together a kit with the following items: a small bottle of Windex or other cleaner, a squeeze bottle of water, some wet wipes and the short roll of paper towels. Now you’ll always be ready for a quick on-the-road cleanup. * “I have a plastic cup that changes color when the drink is hot. Oddly enough, it changes at the perfect temperature for my baby’s bath. So, I fill the tub and toss in the cup. When the cup starts to change back to its original color (blue), I know the bathwater is not too hot.” -- P. in Idaho * “To remove muffins or rolls from a pan, set it on an old, damp towel for a minute. The steam must loosen the bottoms, because they just slide right out. I thank my mom for this tip.” -- Janey R. via e-mail * Sprinkle baby powder in dish gloves to help them slide on in an instant. Gardeners Are there plants that help with mosquitos? Make your garden work for you in the quest to combat mosquitoes by planting varieties that naturally deter them. Options abound for mosquito-repelling plants, although there’s minimal research to prove they actually work reliably. Thus, you may need to experiment with several to see what might work for you. Popular choices include mint, lemon balm, marigolds, basil, chrysanthemums, eucalyptus, rosemary, lavender, lemongrass, catnip, peppermint, sage, and more. Another strategy is to spread cedar mulch throughout the garden. It offers double benefits by deterring
from Cornell Cooperative Extension, Livingston County mosquitoes with its scent and soaks up and retains moisture in the soil. Why are my Cherry tree branches dying? It most likely has Black Knot disease. Black Knot is a disfiguring and potentially lethal disease of trees and shrubs in the genus Prunus. This genus includes stone fruits such as wild, fruit-bearing and ornamental plums and cherries. The disease is present only in the woody parts of trees, occurring most frequently on twigs and branches and sometimes on trunks and scaffold limbs. The warty swellings first become visible in late summer or the following spring
on new shoots. At first the knots are somewhat greenish and corky, but with age they become black and hard. When they occur on twigs and small branches, prune out the infected branches about 4 inches below the knot. On large branches and trunks, the knots can be cut out. This is done most successfully during August when the fungus does not extend far beyond the visible swelling. Be sure to remove any infected branches in the winter if black knot returns after August. Remove the diseased wood and about 1 inch of clean wood around the knot. It is best to remove knots before growth begins in the spring and to take them away from the orchard, as they will continue to produce spores for several weeks after re-
moval. Be sure to destroy infected tissue to limit spread of spores. Unfortunately, this disease is hard to control and might require the replacement with a tree not in that family or susceptible to Black Knot.

Modern cars are technological marvels, and it turns out drivers may value tech over all else, including their choice of automaker. A 2017 study from Autotrader asked 1,000 participants an assortment of questions about technology and car buying. Roughly 60 percent of millennial car shoppers and more than 40 percent of baby boomers indicated they would switch vehicle brands just to get the technology features they want. Drivers are even willing to pay extra for their preferred tech. The Autotrader study found that the average shopper would pay an extra $2,276 to get the right tech features.

In 2015, 24 percent of employed people in the United States did some or all of their work at home, says the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Bringing work home means men and women will need a space to work. In tight quarters, bedrooms may be the only available area. An armoirestyle desk will blend in with the decor and can hide paperwork and electronics behind doors. Otherwise, a makeup vanity can serve the dual purpose of providing a place to get ready for a night out and a ready space to house a laptop during the day.

Climate control: Attics are converted to provide residents with more livable space. Converted space is only livable if the climate within the attic can be controlled so it’s cool in the summer and warm in the winter. An existing HVAC unit needs to efficiently heat and cool an extra room. If it can’t, bills might spike because the rest of the home likely won’t be as comfortable, forcing homeowners to adjust thermostats to offset that discomfort. That also could affect the unit’s life expectancy. Before going forward with an attic renovation, homeowners should contact HVAC professionals to determine if attic spaces can be serviced with the existing units and ductwork, or if an alternative arrangement must be worked out to make the spaces livable.
Planning an Outdoor Oasis (Family Features) - If it’s time to think about making some improvements or additions to your home, outside may be the best place to get started. D efin e th e Sp ace.An outdoor room could be the entire yard, or just a small part of it. Think about it having walls, a ceiling and flooring, just like an indoor room. • Walls are vertical elements that help define a space, such as hedges, trees, lattice screens, raised garden beds, railings, a gazebo or fence to frame your space. • Ceilings provide shelter and shade. Think of awnings, umbrellas and pergolas. Or use what’s naturally there, like the branches of a shade tree. • Flooring could be the existing lawn, a mulched pathway or a created floor such as a concrete or flagstone patio, or deck. Decide the Elements. Once you know where your oasis is, it’s time to figure out what needs to go in it. • Decking - A low-maintenance composite deck adds versatility and beauty that you can customize to meet just about any need. When planning a deck, don’t make the mistake of building one that’s too small. Mark the area you want to use, then put your outdoor furniture in it to see if you have the space you need. Use an online planning tool to explore designs, materials, colors and accessories. Be sure to check on local building codes and permits needed before starting any construction. Fire and Food. Use your outdoor room any time of day by planning a place to cook and eat. • An outdoor kitchen can be as simple as a portable grill or as elaborate as your budget will allow. A DIY pizza oven can also be a fun way to enjoy cooking outside. • Fireplaces, fire pits and chimineas bring coziness along with great function - and they help extend the outdoor enjoyment in cooler weather. Accessories. Just like indoor room, outdoor rooms benefit from appropriate accessories. Make sure you plan for them in your budget as well as in your designs. • Lighting - Landscape lighting, lanterns, candles or strings of white outdoor lights can all add beautiful ambience. • Sound - Add pleasing audio with outdoor stereo sound systems, trickling water features or even just simple wind chimes. • Color - Garden art, tablescapes, container plantings and fabric can put colorful finishing touches on your outdoor room.

BRICK HOMES FIGHT FIRES THE LONGEST

PLUMBING
(NAPSI)—Firefighters report that it takes about an hour and a half for a fire to breach a brick home-as compared to fiber cement in under an hour and vinyl siding in just minutes. Choosing brick exteriors to protect their own firehouses, firefighters say brick homes help slow the spread, offering the extra few minutes to help save lives and property as this brief video shows. While the International Residential Code (IRC) does not require cladding on singlefamily homes to have a fire rating, the International Building Code (IBC) acknowledges that fired-clay brick has tested to provide a minimum one-hour fire resistance rating alone, regardless of backing material. This is something that synthetic materials—such as fiber cement—cannot claim.
Need A Plumber? • All water heaters including tankless • High efficiency furnaces, AC & boilers • Water conditioning systems & Goulds well pumps • All general household plumbing • Drain cleaning
Primarily made of clay, brick is classified as a noncombustible material that will not burn, melt or combust. In a one-hour severe fire test conducted independently for the Brick Industry Association (BIA), vinyl siding burned after only 18 minutes, fiber cement failed within one hour and fired-clay brick withstood the flames after one hour. The test was conducted in accordance with ASTM E119, the Standard Test Methods for Fire Tests of Building Construction and Materials. Learn More: BIA is the nationally recognized authority on clay brick construction representing the nation’s distributors and manufacturers of clay brick and suppliers of related products. The World Health Organization defines intimate partner violence as behavior within an intimate relationship that causes physical, sexual or psychological harm. Such violence can include acts of physical aggression, sexual coercion, psychological abuse, and controlling behaviors. Violence perpetrated by both current and former spouses and partners falls under the umbrella of intimate partner violence. Domestic violence is so prevalent that the National Network to End Domestic Violence reports that it fields more than 19,000 calls on a typical day. Anyone who is a victim of domestic violence or suspects a loved one or acquaintance is being abused is urged to call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233 (SAFE) or 1-800-7873224 (TTY) right away.

Honesty at Work As I was standing in line in a Canandaigua store, a customer ahead of me purchased an item costing $50.00. The cashier picked up only the two $20 bills. The customer picked up the $10 bill and left the store with her item. Moments later the customer came back and paid the remaining amount. She taught my daughter that honesty is always the right thing to do. She did the right thing, and it was definitely noticed. Missing Parts Please beware of thieves who steal catalytic converters from cars parked in public parking spaces next to apartment buildings. It happened to me while borrowing a friend's 2000 Honda Accord. When I parked it on Tuesday, May 3rd, it was purring like a kitten. The next morning, I started it, and it was as loud as an outboard motor. This was in the middle of [local town], a well-guarded suburb. For a thief, this part would net $100-150. For the owner, it will cost $2,300 because of the costly connections and labor for a new catalytic converter. The salvage yards I called all swore they don't deal with catalytic converters. What will they steal next? I suggest using a garage or carport. - Sadder but Wiser Contact Us Why do so many businesses, services and stores even have in their sites a “contact us” form where you can ask a question or make comments? Some give you the runaround just to find the form. Others don’t respond to questions or return an answer. Recently, I submitted one asking a simple question. Nothing. I submitted it a second time, still nothing. I finally went to their competitor and got the answer I was seeking. I’m sure they’ll probably use the COVID excuse. Well, word of mouth carries a lot of weight, especially in a small community. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

It was a success, serving several area families and individuals in need. Thank you so much to the many wonderful volunteers who gave their time and energy to make this event possible with everything they do from donating goods to setting up the personal and household cleaning products to assisting guests throughout the event to completing inventory and clean up afterwards. You are all a tremendous blessing, and the HBB is very grateful for your hard work and service. God bless you!
Changing Times Some people live only in the past. Those who believe in no gun control are, I believe, some of those people. When this country was formed, guns were a necessary part of life. Many, if not most, people depended on their guns to provide food for the table and to defend themselves against wild animals. There was also the threat that the country would be attacked by another country. While that is always a possibility, even today, I would have to say that guns would be of little help now since there are much more effective weapons in today’s world. Today, guns are more of a problem in America than a solution. Every day on the news, there are stories of innocent people being killed or injured by guns. Too often, stories tell of mass shootings with young children being the victims.

Local Mother of Six, Maria Wehrle, Supports Fellow Moms through MINO BY SUE LEDOUX
D
espite Rochester’s poverty level, we are a community with a generous heart. Sometimes, it takes only one person with an idea and a tremendous drive to tap into that generosity to make a difference.
Recently, I spoke with Maria Wehrle, Rochester area mom, founder and director of Mothers in Need of Others (MINO). In 2004, she took a course to discover her “spiritual gifts.” Maria hoped it would help her learn what she might do next with her life. It was the last day of class, and Maria, a mother of six, had not gotten any answers yet. Then a woman stood up, panicked and in tears. “She just found out she was having triplets,” said Maria. “I only had mine one at a time and didn’t know what it was like to have a bunch at once. I knew what it was like to have a large family. The emotional and financial stress is a real challenge. My heart went out to this lady...I was trying to figure out how I could help her. As I cooked dinner that night, I saw M-I-N-O in the back of my mind.” Mothers in Need of Others (MINO) started simply. “I gathered 14 women from my church,” said Maria. “We made meals, collected car seats, strollers, anything for moms in a crisis in our church.” Two years later, Maria received a call from someone in Rochester. Would she be willing to help moms in the inner city? She did not hesitate. “I packed up my car, and we drove around, delivering things to moms.” Because of the number of families for which MINO now provides, it is no longer able to deliver supplies directly to families. Instead, MINO works with case managers who make these deliveries during their regular visits to their clients. Maria explained, “We are a short term, emergency assistance program. Therefore, it is in the best interest of the mom to be connected to services prior to reaching out to us. If she isn’t, Maria Wehrle in the resource room that’s where calling 211 can help with referrals to programs with case managers. The case manager not only acts as her advocate in accessing supplies from us, but he or she can also assist the client/mom in making arrangements to secure extended services, if those are required. We also act to ‘fill in the gaps’ when that person applies for WIC, for example, so that her baby isn’t without diapers, baby food, or formula while the paperwork is being processed.” Case managers pick up the supplies for their clients at MINO headquarters, and take them directly to their clients’ homes, thus overcoming three common barriers to access:
wrapped feminine products and nursing pads, unopened, unexpired formula and baby food, hygiene products, cleaning supplies, and baby gear (strollers, pack-n-plays, highchairs, activity seats, etc.) “People are so generous, especially in Rochester... all you have to do is make your needs known.”
Facing economic challenges, MINO needs your help!
MINO, like many agencies, is struggling now to stay afloat and help the many who rely on it. “We partner with 141 agencies, churches, schools, and daycare programs, providing them with emergency supplies for families they work with who are in crisis situations. Only a handful of those programs reciprocate with supplies,” explained Maria. She continued: “A small number of agencies, churches, schools, and the Childcare Council have stepped up to share resources, make donations, and do donation drives for us. There were also a few very helpful grants over the past couple of years, too. What we need is funding on a consistent basis. We are struggling to figure out how to find sustainable funding sources so we can survive.” Despite the challenges, MINO closed for only one month during the worst of Covid to restructure their distribution process, utilizing a “no contact” phase. They repacked distributions that would go to “We partner with 141 families once restrictions were agencies, churches, lifted. With inflation, the cost for MINO to fill its shelves for a month (once $300-$400) is now $1,000. And those shelves are looking bare indeed. Unless MINO can raise $16,000 for rent, salaries, and products to fill its shelves, it faces a dim future.
schools, and daycare programs, providing them with emergency supplies for families they work with who are in crisis situations.” - Maria Wehrle
To support MINO, be it donations of items, money, your talents, or if you or someone you know needs help, email MINO at mothersinneedofothers@ gmail.com or call (585) 348-8596. For MINO, it all boils down to people reaching out to others with love.
•
Mom may not have transportation to get to MINO.
•
Moms do not need to find babysitters while they are gone to get supplies.
•
It protects their privacy and is convenient. They usually receive 3 or 4 heavy bags of donations, and don’t need to struggle to get them home.

REAL ESTATE SECTION
Condition of the property: Product shortages were another trend to emerge during the pandemic, and disruptions to the supply chain will not necessarily go away anytime soon. In addition, the cost of various products associated with home improvements, including lumber, skyrocketed during the pandemic. The National Association of Home Builders noted that while lumber prices declined in 2021, the price of lumber packages quoted to builders remained high. That means real estate investors who invest in properties that will need work could be forced to pay a lot to fix these properties. And ongoing supply chain issues could extend the time it takes to renovate a property. Investors must be able to bear these costs and lag times to make the most off their real estate investments.

---
DEAR DR. ROACH: My partner and I are in our 60s, exercise regularly (three to five times per week), eat a well-balanced diet and are of average weight. Recently, we went bowling for two games and found ourselves sore in the area right below our buttocks. We were very sore for several days, making walking difficult, especially up and down stairs. What would have caused this area to get so sore? We named it “bowling butt” for lack of a medical term. -- M.B. ANSWER: Starting a new activity will often cause people to overuse some muscles that aren’t used to the strain. Bowling involves forceful extension of the thigh, which is the gluteus maximus muscle, as well as other muscles in the hip to maintain stability. Two games were enough to exhaust that muscle, and the untrained muscle will often suffer small tears, which take days to heal properly. The fact that you were sore with activities involving thigh extension helps confirm the diagnosis. Some people think it’s lactic acid in the muscle, but that is gone after a few hours. Naming a disease is serious business, and I did a look for similar names in the literature. I did find “Wii butt,” a pain sensation after playing games, including bowling, on the Wii video game system, but none for actual bowling. I’m not sure “bowling butt” will catch on, however. ***
Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2022 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

CHOOSING THE BEST BRUSH With so many options available, choosing the right toothbrush for your specific needs can be daunting. Follow these easy guidelines to pick the best brush. Consider the size of the brush head: the best size for most adults is one that’s one inch long and half an inch wide. Choose a brush with good grip for better control. Bristles come in soft, medium, and hard; for most people, soft bristles are the safest choice. Straight bristles can do more harm than good, so always go for rounded bristles. Most importantly, choose a brush that’s ADA or CDA approved—this ensures that the bristles are safe and secured, the handle is sturdy, and the brush helps reduce plaque and gum disease.

AUTO SECTION
Don’t just replace but upgrade your headlight bulbs. Bulbs that have started to dim need to be repla ced, but auto enthusiasts or maintenance-savvy drivers know they can upgrade their bulbs w hen replacing them. Indu stry experts recommend replacing headlamp bulbs every tw o years, and replacing them in pairs to make sure the vehicle’s lighting is equally balanced. But rather than sticking w ith the bulbs provided by the car maker, look for a bulb that makes it easier to see at night and during hazardous conditions. These headlights put more light on the road, helping to make up for poor w eather, dimly lit roads, aging headlights, and even the loss of n ight vision many drivers experience as they age. Capable of providing up to 100 percent more light than the stan dard halogen bulbs found on the majority of vehicles today, special headlights create a better beam patte rn that is dramatically longer than the standard bulbs, vastly improving driver vision and safety.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Prepare to Age in Place? Been There, Done That I read an article the other day encouraging seniors to make plans to age in place. Aging in place means to stay in our own homes as we get older so we can maintain our independence. Planning for it means making whatever changes are necessary to ensure that our homes are safe. Planning also can include surrounding ourselves with a network of people and services for support. My first thought was ... that’s what we’ve been doing for the past two years, and we certainly didn’t have time to plan for it before COVID sent us all into lockdown. Yet here we are ... we survived. And how did we do that? We created our own little support networks, mostly by phone since our meetings were canceled. We checked in with each other when the store finally stocked long-missing items. We baked and left cookies on the porches of those we knew would appreciate them. We learned Zoom and other online video conference programs so we could have face-to-face meeting with family and friends. We beefed up our computer skills, at least enough to enable us to place togo grocery orders at the store or arrange for delivery and to make purchases that Amazon could bring to our door. We roamed YouTube in search of exercise videos for seniors and took free classes of all types. We took up the scatter rugs that could cause trips and falls because we knew that the EMTs who came to our rescue would be leery of COVID and come through the door fully outfitted in biohazard suits. We dared to ask questions and learned that the library will deliver books and the pharmacy will mail prescriptions. All in all, we survived our forced aging in place just fine. We seniors are a tough bunch. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

The Band’s Visit - In this joyously offbeat story, set in a town that’s way off the beaten path, a band of musicians arrive lost, out of the blue. Under the spell of the desert sky, and with beautiful music perfuming the air, the band brings the town to life in unexpected and tantalizing ways. Even the briefest visit can stay with you forever. THE BAND’S VISIT rejoices in the way music makes us laugh, makes us cry, and ultimately, brings us together. STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * The stage before frostbite is called -- wait for it -- frostnip.
THE HISTORY OF CORSAGES The term “corsage” was once a reference to the bodice of a woman’s dress. The first corsages were actually worn on the bodice, which is the part of a woman’s dress that is above the waist, and some believed the corsage could ward off evil spirits. According to PollenFloralDesign.com, by the 1900s, corsages were worn closer to the shoulder than the bodice. At this time, the flowers were pinned on upside down, with the bow at the top. The corsages were also larger at this time than they are today. The tradition of giving corsages to young ladies on their prom nights is relatively recent. In fact, many historians agree that this practice likely began in the 20th century in the United States when gentlemen would typically arrive to pick up their prom dates bearing bouquets of flowers for their dates’ parents. The young men would then remove one flower from the bouquet and attach it to their dates’ dress.

DID YOU KNOW?
Auto Body Technician
Brief breaks during the work day can dramatically improve one’s ability to focus on a task. A 2011 study published in the journal Cognition found that brief mental breaks can improve focus on a prolonged task. The study’s authors tested participants’ ability to focus on a repetitive computerized task for 50 minutes under various conditions. The control group performed the task without breaks or diversions. The switch group and non-switch group memorized four digits before performing the task and were directed to respond if they saw one of the digits on the screen while performing the task. The switch group was the only group to be presented with the digits twice during the experiment, and both groups were tested on their memory of the digits at the end of the task. Most participants’ performance declined considerably over the course of the 50-minute task. However, the performance of those in the switch group did not decline at all, as the two brief breaks to respond to the digits allowed them to maintain their focus throughout the experiment. The researchers behind the study concluded that the switch group’s performance was steady because the brain is built to detect and respond to change, and its performance will actually suffer if it must maintain prolonged attention on a single task without taking a break. Professionals with a lot on their plates may see their performance improve by taking frequent mental breaks throughout the workday.

WORKING PARENTS CAN CREATE BETTER WORK-LIFE BALANCE Look for ways to be more efficient. Interactions with coworkers can make work more enjoyable, but working parents should not spend too much time shooting the breeze with their fellow employees. Doing so wastes time and only contributes to work-related stress. Commuters who don’t drive themselves to work can be more efficient by using their commutes to read emails, arrange meetings or catch up on projects. Doing so allows for more time to get work done while in the office, which can make it easier to go home on time. Page 29

THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT RETURNING TO SCHOOL Adults who decide to return to school after a long layoff are following a popular path. According to the education resource Education Corner, a growing number of career colleges and vocational training schools now offer bachelor’s and graduate degree programs geared toward working adults. People return to school for various reasons, including the chance to learn new skills or further develop their existing skills. Some return to school because they are changing careers, while others may have lost a job or desire a promotion and feel that attaining a higher level of education or new skills can make reaching that goal more likely. Adults who hope to return to school might be surprised to learn that the educational landscape has changed considerably since they were last in a classroom.
