Rush-Henrietta Names West Henrietta Education Building for John R. “Jack” Gaffney By Travis Anderson, Submitted by Heather Campo
F
or decades, Jack Gaffney has been synonymous with the RushHenrietta Central School District. Now, his name forever will be associated with one of its buildings. Family members, friends, colleagues, and staff members gathered Thursday, May 9, for the dedication of the John R. “Jack” Gaffney West Henrietta Education Building, located at 649 Erie Station Road. A lifelong Rush resident, Jack is known by many for his long and successful career in Rush-Henrietta transportation circles. He began there as a substitute driver in 1957 and retired as a parttime driver in 2009. In between, he spent 25 years as the district transportation director. Fittingly, his office while serving in that capacity was located in the building which now bears his name. Jack was well known for his eye for detail. He developed a routing system based on index cards, thumb tacks, and string on a cork board that he used to develop safe and efficient routes for students. Times changed, though, and he realized computers - a novelty in those days - could help. He played a key role in (back) Jack’s son, John Gaffney; (front, l-r) daughter, Paula Harvey; transitioning to computerized bus routing. He also was the first Jack Gaffney; Carolyn Gaffney; daughter, Martha Mack transportation director in the area to understand the benefits of moving from gasoline-powered buses to diesel-powered engines, Jack’s community service includes serving on the Rush Town Board which provided better efficiency at a lower cost. and Rush Town Zoning Board. “America is a fabulous country! It is the only place where miracles not only happen, but where they happen all the time...” ~ Thomas Clayton Wolfe Most of us were born in this country and have lived here all our lives. We may be forgiven for not comprehending how the rest of the world looks at our country as the land of miracles..... of dreams come true! “Only in America could such things happen” is often heard, and indeed, we are blessed with opportunities which people in other countries never experience. We should never let our miracles grow commonplace..... we should be constantly aware of just how fortunate we are! When death occurs, your first call should be to us. we can advise you as to what must be done and we can handle many of the tasks for you.

(NAPS)—This year, as you look back at the many years your mother cared for you, consider the possibility that she may require care herself someday. Long term care insurance can help ensure that your mother will get the care she needs, should there come a time when she requires help managing some of the activities we associate with independent living. Millions of Americans require long term care during their lifetime,1 which includes assistance with simple tasks like bathing, eating and dressing—trivial things we do every day without a second thought. In reality, the type of care needed to provide assistance with these activities can be expensive and is generally not covered by traditional health plans or Medicare. It’s important to keep in mind that women, in general, live longer than men. This means that women may be more likely to need care at some point in their lives than their male counterparts.2 Should that need arise—whether it’s assistance to perform activities of daily living or supervision due to a severe cognitive impairment—it’s likely to be provided by a family member or friend. Unfortunately, this may not be an ideal option, with many families living far apart from each other. And, your mother may not be willing to place that burden on you or even a close friend. The good news is, she is eligible to apply for coverage under the Federal Long Term Care Insurance Program (FLTCIP). Encourage your qualified relatives to plan now The best time for your family members to consider long term care insurance is long before they need it. Because the FLTCIP is medically underwritten, it’s important for your qualified relatives to apply when they are in good health to avoid the risk that a future illness or condition may prevent them from obtaining coverage later. Also, premiums are directly related to age. This means the younger people are when they apply for coverage, the lower their premium. You may wish to consider applying for coverage as well, as a way to help secure your family’s future. With benefits designed specifically for the federal family, the FLTCIP offers a smart way to help protect your savings and assets should you or your loved ones need long term care services someday. Many members of the federal family are eligible to apply for coverage under the FLTCIP, including federal and U.S. Postal Service employees and annuitants, as well as active and retired members of the uniformed services. Certain family members, or qualified relatives, are also eligible. Qualified relatives include your spouse, domestic partner, parents and parents-in-law, and adult children. For a complete list of who is eligible to apply, visit LTCFEDS. com/eligibility. For personalized assistance, call (800) LTC-FEDS ( (800) 5823337)/TTY (800) 843-3557 to speak with a program consultant. 1

The German death toll was more than 2,000. Delivering The Freedom Of Choice RECOGNIZE POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS HOUSEHOLD CHEMICALS All-purpose cleaners: Many cleaners list bleach and ammonia among their ingredients. Bleach may be listed as sodium hypochlorite. When used as directed in a well-ventilated space, bleach and ammonia can be relatively safe. However, fumes from bleach or ammonia can cause rashes and skin irritation and irritate the eyes and respiratory tract. Bleach and ammonia should never be mixed because mixing the two can produce a deadly chloramine gas. Vinegar and baking soda can be used as a replacement for many household cleaning products, and these alternatives have virtually no dangerous side effects.

WHEN TEETH HINT OF DISEASE Just as the eyes are windows into many health conditions, so the mouth serves as a door. For many people with celiac disease, a visit to the dentist and not the gastroenterologist is the first step toward discovering the condition. The autoimmune disorder known as “celiac disease” (an immune reaction to eating gluten) can cause damage to the small intestine that will interfere with nutrient absorption. If the disease blocks calcium absorption, it can cause “dental enamel hypoplasia,” the medical term for white, yellow, or brown spots on the teeth. This weakening of tooth enamel affects as many as 40 percent to 50 percent of new pediatric celiac patients compared with 6 percent of the healthy population.
To give our patients the best dental care possible, we are committed to continual learning and education. Because we want our patients to feel confident knowing that we are a team of skilled clinicians, we stay informed about the latest research, new techniques and equipment, and the latest products that a dental office can offer its patients to provide state-of-the-art dental care. We invite you to take advantage of our commitment to the highest quality dental care by calling BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, 585.343.4246, for a convenient appointment. general good health. He never washes his hands when he comes in from working as a public accountant. He doesn’t wash his hands when he sneezes, or after touching meat and poultry when he cooks. He smokes and is a functioning alcoholic. He says it’s not necessary to wash fruit before you eat it and tells me I don’t know what I am talking about. He has been on Lipitor for several years and eats steak almost every night. On the other hand, I wash my hands when I come in from work and before preparing meals, and have always washed fruit before eating it. What’s his secret? Does he have strong genes? -- T.M. ANSWER: Eating well and taking good care of yourself don’t guarantee a long, healthy life. The converse is true as well. I have heard so many stories about Aunt Martha (or Gertrude or Helen), who drank, smoked and lived on bacon until she was 105, but your lifestyle does give you a better chance at living longer and healthier, and of feeling better right now. Smoking increases the risk of dying from any cause. A 74-yearold man who has smoked all his life has about the same risk of dying as an 82-year-old nonsmoker. One can do a similar risk analysis with diet. But some people, through a combination of good genes and good luck, manage to live long, healthy lives despite poor lifestyle choices. Even though some individuals will not have the expected outcome, smoking is still bad. So is eating steak every night. Washing (or at least rinsing) produce is a good idea. ***
DEAR DR. ROACH: Last year, I started getting Raynaud’s. I can remember from my youth that my father had it, so it didn’t seem too terrible. It’s not just the fingertips that turn white, but also some of my toes are affected. I asked people who know of it or have it how one gets this. What is the cause? No one knows. So I asked my doctor. Even he said he did not know. How do I get these episodes, and what can I do to prevent them? -- R.S. ANSWER: Raynaud phenomenon is an exaggerated response to cold or stress, causing color changes in the skin of the fingers and toes. There is a long list of causes of Raynaud phenomenon. Often, no cause is ever found (in which case it is called primary Raynaud, which just means we don’t know what’s causing it). The most common known causes are the autoimmune rheumatic diseases, especially scleroderma, lupus and Sjogren’s syndrome. Hypothyroidism is an unusual cause, and some drugs can cause it as well. The current thinking is that primary RP is caused by abnormalities in the alpha receptors in blood vessels (alpha receptors respond to adrenaline and similar molecules). Keeping the whole body -- and especially the hands -- warm is the first step. Sudden temperature changes can trigger the effect. Warming the hands in warm water at the onset of an attack can stop it. Anxiety makes it worse, so a positive attitude can really affect this condition. Medications, such as amlodipine, may be necessary for prevention in more severe cases. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. How can I get my hydrangeas to bloom? - Mary R. There are several reasons why macrophylla hydrangeas don’t bloom. They need winter protection to keep the buds from freezing. Deer often will eat the buds, which form the previous season. And often they gradually reduce their blooms each year because they don’t thrive in our cold winters. There are other kinds of hydrangeas that do bloom reliably in our weather. Both panicle hydrangeas and arborescens hydrangeas bloom very well here. The arborescens varieties are most deer resistant. I spray the buds on my panicle hydrangeas with deer re-

INFLUENTIAL JAZZ MUSICIANS Scott Joplin (c. 1868-1917): Born into a musical family that included his mother, a singer and banjo player, and his father, a violist, Scott Joplin grew up in Texarkana, learning to play the guitar and later the piano at a very young age. By the time Joplin was a teenager, he was working as a traveling musician and eventually became the foremost composer of ragtime jazz. Biography.com notes that Joplin was a true student of music, studying at the George R. Smith College for Negroes in Missouri during the 1890s. Though one of history’s most celebrated jazz musicians, Joplin also composed ballets and operas.

DESIGN A GARDEN FOR ALL SENSES
Residential & Commercial
Aesthetic appeal is one of the most sought-after benefits of gardening. However, many homeowners put in so much effort planting for one particular season that they may not give thought to ensuring the garden looks vibrant no matter the time of year. Gardeners can research planting zones to find plants that will blossom at different times of the year so they can enjoy impressive, aesthetically appealing gardens year-round. Spring bulbs can bloom early on, while annual and perennial summer favorites will thrive under the summer sun. Beautyberry and caryopteris will fill out in the autumn, while holly or mahonia can look lovely in the winter.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) There’s nothing an Aries Lamb likes less than having to tackle a humdrum task. But finding a creative way to do it can make all the difference. A more exciting time awaits you this weekend. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Finishing up a job on time leaves you free to enjoy your weekend without any Taurean guilt pangs. A romantic attitude from an unlikely source could take you by surprise. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Moving in a new career direction might be seen by some as risky. But if you have both the confidence to see it through and the facts to back you up, it could prove rewarding. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Holding back on a decision might be difficult, considering how long you’ve waited for this opportunity. But until you’re able to resolve all doubts, it could be the wiser course to take. LEO (July 23 to August 22) You still need to move carefully where financial matters are concerned. Better for the Lion to move slowly than pounce on a “promising” prospect that doesn’t keep its promises. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A rejection of an idea you believe in can be upsetting. But don’t let it discourage you. Get yourself back on track and use what you’ve learned from the experience to try again. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) The early part of the week could find you looking to balance your priorities between your family obligations and your career responsibilities. Pressures begin to ease by week’s end. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) An associate’s problem could cause unavoidable delays in moving ahead with your joint venture. If so, use the time to look into another project you had previously set aside. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Although a financial problem could be very close to being resolved in your favor, it’s still a good idea to avoid unnecessary spending for at least a little while longer. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Support for some unwelcome workplace decisions begins to show up, and continues to build, so that by week’s end, the gregarious Goat is as popular as ever. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Congratulations. Deciding to attend a social function you might have earlier tried to avoid could turn out to be one of the best decisions you’ve made in a long time. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Getting into a new situation could prove to be a more difficult experience than you expected. Don’t hesitate to ask for advice in coping with some of the more irksome challenges. BORN THIS WEEK: Your strong sense of duty makes you a valued and trusted member of your community. Have you considered a career in law enforcement? (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc

www.conradsgeneseo.com THE HISTORY OF CORSAGES The term “corsage” was once a reference to the bodice of a woman’s dress. The first corsages were actually worn on the bodice, which is the part of a woman’s dress that is above the waist, and some believed the corsage could ward off evil spirits. According to PollenFloralDesign.com, by the 1900s, corsages were worn closer to the shoulder than the bodice. At this time, the flowers were pinned on upside down, with the bow at the top. The corsages were also larger at this time than they are today. The tradition of giving corsages to young ladies on their prom nights is relatively recent. In fact, many historians agree that this practice likely began in the 20th century in the United States when gentlemen would typically arrive to pick up their prom dates bearing bouquets of flowers for their dates’ parents. The young men would then remove one flower from the bouquet and attach it to their dates’ dress.

Recently, Golden Coin Laundry/Dry Cleaning was kindly helpful, without their customer even asking. A partly disabled, senior citizen was helped getting some drapes with special instructions washed, then when dry and pressed, back out into the car again. There was good, honest, communication So tonight, I was out walking my dog in our peaceful village as I often do. My dog is, of course, leashed with doggy bags on hand and is on the municipal side grass. My dog is in her senior years and likes to stop and piddle periodically, even if there’s nothing left. Out of nowhere, this woman pulls over and proceeds to proclaim that I must pick up the dog poop, insinuating my dog had pooped in her yard, with a hoity toity attitude. My dog had not pooped at all, and if she had, I certainly don’t need to be pre-advised of my responsibilities. The woman quickly rushed away, surely realizing her own arrogance and haste. My dog is a good judge of character, and we both concur hers really stinks!
and empathetic, capable assistance. That was such good, local customer service, one could recommend them for future business. Thank you, Golden Coin.
The Avon Circle looks beautiful with the Military banners hanging and the gardens planted and starting to bloom. The Avon Garden Club always does a beautiful job with the flowers throughout the village. The help from the village crew makes it all possible too. Without the volunteers and village crew it wouldn’t be possible. Thank you and Happy Memorial Day!
new units. Two electricians showed up on time but slow walked the job. After 3 hours, both of them had only managed to install 4 thermostats total. Turns out they were overheard talking to each other about how they had hooked the wires up incorrectly, and when the units were placed back in the wall, the wires actually came loose! These novice mistakes, including troubleshooting them, took up valuable time that we were paying for by the hour. When I contacted the owner to voice my concern, he unfortunately made more excuses for his employees than he did offers to help me, his customer. I felt duped.
put on a grave need to be brought back or enforced. It looks trashy. You will find Christmas decorations, Easter decorations, multiple containers of fake flowers, multiple figurines, and even beer cans, beer cans on graves of young people who died because of alcohol. This is not showing respect for the dead. We are in May, and the holiday wreaths are still on the graves. I understand our need to grieve and to display our love for someone who has passed, but we can’t overdue and infringe on the rights of neighboring graves. We have to keep things neat. Please, everyone go clean up your loved one’s grave.

Recently an individual commented within a post about increasing hate towards certain groups across the country. I have to disagree with that and am offended by that opinion.
Page 32
I have no hate feeling for any group and hope that the poster of that comment feels the same way. We, as a country, need to move forward. Just a reminder of the bravery and sacrifice of our service members, who put their lives in harm’s way to protect our values and way of life. Just because people have money, doesn’t mean they are above the law. Compare your house to your rental? Really? That means you, Mr. & Mrs. Landlord, for not providing a rental that was up to standards and codes. Talk about multiple violations!!! You both should receive citations.

BE SAFE, HEALTHY AND HAPPY IN THE WORKPLACE WHILE PREGNANT The first thing pregnant working women should know is that they have the right to work while pregnant. In the United States, it has been illegal to discriminate against pregnant women in the workplace since 1978, when the Pregnancy Discrimination Act was passed. But in spite of those laws, some employers may be less receptive to their female employees’ pregnancies, with some insisting they harbor good intentions, such as the woman’s safety. Businesses cannot fire employees for being pregnant, and many courts have ruled that decisions about the safety of the woman and fetus are up to the employee and her doctor, not her boss. On the same token, a company cannot refuse to hire a person simply because she’s pregnant.
