BEAT THE TRAVEL CROWDS THIS MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND Expect the trip to take longer than planned. Delays are possible, if unlikely, even if you travel during off-peak hours. Recognition of that can make traffic jams or flight delays a little easier to manage. Parents can prepare kids for delays by letting them know in advance that some setbacks are possible. Build expected delays into your itinerary so you aren’t stressing out about missing anything. If travelers luck out and experience no delays, then the weekend begins that much sooner.

Choose the right date and time Plan when to hold the sale by looking at the calendar and choosing an open weekend. Many people host their yard sales on Friday, Saturday or Sunday mornings, theorizing that this is when the most people will be free to browse their wares. Begin early in the morning so that shoppers will not need to disrupt their schedules much to visit neighborhood sales. A 7 a.m. start time will attract the early birds and free up most of the day.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * “Brave New World” author Aldous Huxley became almost completely blind as a teenager. HOBBIES FOR DIFFERENT PERSONALITY TYPES Men and women who have experienced great success in the world of business can pursue a host of low-stress opportunities with a goal of sharing their experiences with the next generation of business leaders. Teaching a course at a local college or university is one such avenue, and executives can even offer to work with high school students interested in pursuing careers in business. Teaching and mentoring might be less traditional hobbies than crocheting or woodworking, but they still provide a way for adults to pursue their passions away from the constraints of the office.

NOW HERE’S A TIP How to pack a suitcase: Roll pants and tops, adding to suitcase first, toward the handle side. Then add heavy items (shoes, boots) toward the wheel end. Make sure you choose the right size case for the trip; too much room will cause items to shift around.

Our society must make it right and possible for old people not to fear the young or be deserted by them, for the test of a civilization is the way that it cares for its helpless members. ~ Pearl S. Buck

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Walk Faster, Live Longer
We’ve known for years that walking is a good form of exercise for seniors ... we just didn’t know why. Now a new study not only explains how it works, but why brisk walking is even more effective. Ten years ago, researchers at Leicester University Biomedical Research Centre started looking at genetic data in the biobanks in the U.K. for clues about why seniors who walk seemed to live longer. They didn’t fool around with a dozen or so participants. No, they analyzed the information of over 405,000 people. And now we know: It’s the telomere length. Telomeres (aka leucocyte telomere length, or LTLs) are the “end caps” on strands of DNA, the building blocks of our bodies and an indicator of our biological age. Fast walkers have longer LTLs, and therefore better health ... and longer lives. That same study showed that as little as 10 minutes per day of brisk walking can equate to longer lives. (The Mayo Clinic prefers 30 minutes of activity per day, possibly broken into three 10-minute sessions.) The best walking pace appears to be 3 mph, although the research data was from wearable tracking devices like those we use to measure steps per day. But there’s more. A study at the National Institutes of Health concluded that the length of the telomeres is positively associated with consuming fruits, dairy, 100% fruit juice and coffee. On the other hand, food and drinks with high amounts of sugar and red meat can negatively affect the telomere length. The study gave a big thumbs up to the Mediterranean diet, with loads of nuts, fruits, vegetables, unrefined cereals, fish and olive oil. If you invest in a pedometer to measure your steps, be sure to look for one that tracks your speed. Ask your doctor about any recommendations they have for the trackers. INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT MEMORIAL DAY It took a long time for Memorial Day to become a federal holiday. Despite tracing its origins to the immediate aftermath of the Civil War, Memorial Day did not become an official federal holiday until 1971, more than a century after the war ended. This is the same year the holiday was officially designated as taking place on the last Monday in May. The designation has periodically drawn the ire of veterans and military supporters who suggest it is now more widely seen as the unofficial beginning to summer and not a day in which the sacrifices of fallen U.S. soldiers are honored to the extent that they should be.

Gardeners What is the best way to clean dust off my house plants? There are two main reasons to clean your house plants: aesthetics and health. A layer of dust will limit a plants ability to absorb light, which interferes with photosynthesis and slows growth down. One of the easiest ways to give a houseplant a refresher is to take it into the shower with you. Small plants do well with a quick dip in the sink, but consider bringing in the larger potted plants for a more immersive cleaning. This practice works best if you have a removable showerhead and can adjust the pressure. It is best to keep the temperature lukewarm. You could also use a spray bottle. Another method that works well on large sturdy leaves is to utilizing soapy water and a soft sponge or microfiber cloth. Mix 1/4 tea-
from Cornell Cooperative Extension, Livingston County spoon of dish soap with a half-gallon of room temperature water and gentle clean the plant with the sponge or microfiber cloth. When done rise the plant with clean water. When is the best time of the year to prune lilac bushes and grape vines? Grapevine pruning is performed all winter in many large commercial vineyards because this big job requires many hours. The “late dormant period” – FebruaryMarch--is the ideal time to prune, however, because the extent of winter injury to vines can then be determined. If injury has occurred, pruning severity can be adjusted. Pruning can affect the timing of bud-break. That difference may be cause for or prevention of frost dam-
age to buds in the growing season Do not over-prune lilacs. Let the plant develop several branches from the base, instead of only one or two. This allows you to remove stems that have grown too tall, or have been attacked by diseases or insects, and still have flowering wood. Pruning is unnecessary for the first 3 or 4 years. Thereafter, limit pruning to the removal of weaker wood from the center of the bush. This prevents a thicket from developing. You should do this soon
after flowers have fallen. Do not prune in late summer, fall, or winter; late pruning often results in removal of flower buds. Old bushes with runaway growth will need severe pruning. Large single trunks may be cut back to a stump to encourage growth of new stems from the roots. Clumps of overgrown stems may be thinned out about a third a year starting with oldest, weakest, and damaged.

Excessive energy bills can be a concern in spring and summer, just as much as they are in the winter. So how can you save money while keeping your home cool? The solution is simple: Top up your attic insulation. A poorly insulated attic is a primary source of energy loss, forcing your AC unit to work harder than necessary over the warmer months. Most attics are insulated, but oftentimes the amount of insulation present is inadequate - especially in older homes. Over time, insulation can settle and compact, allowing heat to escape through gaps. Topping it up is easy. Ideally, you want to aim for a depth of 16 inches of insulation for an overall R-value of 50. When existing insulation is present, simply level existing insulation to the top of the joist. Lay a fireand moisture-resistant batt insulation, like Roxul Comfortbatt, on top of joists, running perpendicular to the first layer. Ensure batts are butted against each other tightly. Fit batts closely to cross joists; cut batt if necessary (this can be done easily with a serrated blade or bread knife) and leave no space between layers. Don’t forget to insulate the attic hatch to the same level as the rest of the attic. Apply weather-stripping to the edge of the hatch to reduce air leakage. Keep in mind that only IC-rated electrical fixtures can have insulation placed with zero clearance. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and local building code to insulate around the chimney. When a house is insulated properly, energy savings can add up over time. Remember, insulation starts working the moment it is installed and can last for the life of the building.

* To travel with pleated skirts, use this packing trick: Turn the skirt inside out, and straighten all the pleats. Then tape the bottom so that all the pleats are held together. Next, feed the skirt into a leg of pantyhose with the foot cut off. You’ll end up with a nice tube, which you can tuck into the side of your luggage.
Gutters and downspouts are designed to move rainwater away from the home. Too often, however, gutters and downspouts become clogged or do not work effectively. Overflowing gutters will transfer rainwater down the side of a home, where it can puddle at the foundation. This water can ultimately suffocate a lawn, and it may cause interior damage to the home as well. First, inspect and clean all gutters. Leaves, nests, sticks, and even dead animals can block the flow of water in a gutter. Test downspouts by running hose water from the top of the gutter. Downspouts should be pointed away from the home and may need to be extended so they direct water away from the dwelling.

PLUMBING
HOW TO CONSERVE WATER AT HOME Conservation is an essential component of an eco-friendly lifestyle. Conserving the planet’s natural resources can have a profound impact on the planet, and conserving at home is a great way for men and women to get the ball rolling on their conservation efforts. One of the most effective ways to conserve at home is to reduce water consumption. Few people give much thought to how much water they consume at home, as water bills tend to be considerably lower than other utilities like energy and phone. But even if efforts to conserve water at home may not make a dramatic impact on monthly utility bills, many measures can go a long way toward preserving one of the planet’s most precious resources.

Plants, including various fruits, vegetables, nuts and more, rely on pollinators to ensure to transport pollen. Though many plants are self-pollinating and others are pollinated by the wind or water, many others rely on insects and animals to become pollinated. The U.S. Department of Agriculture says birds, bees, bats, butterflies, moths, flies, beetles, and small mammals all can work as pollinators. Examples of crops pollinated by pollinators include apples, squash and almonds. Animals and insects help pollinate more than 75 percent of the world’s flowering plants, and nearly 75 percent of all crops, according to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. Unfortunately, pesticide use can diminish the number of natural pollinators. Natural gardening and pest-control can help protect the habitats of pollinators. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

3513 Thomas Dr., Suite 2
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am on blood thinners, so I am unable to take ibuprofen or naproxen for pain. Do you know of anything I can take to help with pain? -- K.B. ANSWER: The body has two ways of clotting blood: the blood clotting factors and platelets, which are special blood clotting cells. Warfarin (Coumadin), like newer agents such as dabigatran (Pradaxa) or rivaroxaban (Xarelto), work as anticoagulants, blocking proteins that help clot the blood. They don’t actually “thin” the blood; that would mean a change in viscosity. Clotting factors are needed for a mature, effective blood clot. Aspirin and NSAID drugs, like ibuprofen or naproxen (Aleve and others), affect platelets, the specialized blood cells that start clotting the blood when necessary. If both the platelet system and the factor system are decreased due to medication (or underlying clotting disorder), then the risk for abnormal bleeding goes up. This does not mean people can never take aspirin or NSAIDs if they are on a medication to reduce clotting risk, but it does mean that a careful evaluation must be done, based on a person’s unique circumstances, to determine the safety of doing so. In other words, your doctor should be able to tell you how often, if ever, you can take these over-the-counter pain relievers. If you can’t take any, then acetaminophen (Tylenol) is usually the safest bet. However, too much acetaminophen can increase the effect of warfarin (measured by your INR level). ***

DID YOU KNOW? The U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs estimates that around eight million adults in the United States experience post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in a given year. Women experience PTSD at a much greater rate than men. Estimates from the USDVA indicate that 10 percent of women and 4 percent of men are affected by PTSD. Instances of PTSD are similarly prevalent in Canada, where the Canadian Psychological Association estimates that around 8 percent of Canadians who experience a traumatic event develop PTSD. Though no one is immune to PTSD, rates of the disorder among combat veterans are significantly higher than the rates among the general population. USDVA reports that one study of 1,938 veterans found that the prevalence rate among Gulf War veterans was around 14 percent, while an older study from the American Psychological Association found that about 30 percent of Vietnam War veterans had PTSD in their lifetime.
We Care About
Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy
UNDER PRESSURE Toothaches can have a variety of causes, including sinus inflammation and sinus infections. Toothaches often occur in the upper teeth along with sinus pressure and inflammation because the roots of the upper teeth are located near the sinuses. How can you tell the difference between a sinus toothache and a toothache caused by a cavity, abscess, or periodontal disease? When the cause is sinus related, the pain usually occurs in more than one tooth and possibly in both sides of upper teeth. Tooth pain caused by sinus pressure should subside as the sinus infection or inflammation clears. If the toothache persists beyond the sinus infection, it’s time to visit your dentist to rule out any dental-related causes.
Page 24
A painful toothache is the body’s way of announcing that something is wrong and needs attention. Ignoring the pain means you also ignore the underlying problem, and treatment becomes a more serious undertaking. Be smart! For excellence in dental care from a caring staff committed to your comfort, well-being, and sunny smile, call BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, 585.343.4246, for an appointment. Emergencies are also welcome at our full-service, state-of-the-art dental office at 6 Batavia City Centre. We accept most insurances. P.S. Grinding your teeth can be a source of dental pain.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Young Puppy Just Can’t ‘Hold It’ DEAR PAW’S CORNER: We adopted a puppy last month. “Jake” is having some problems adjusting to his new home. He has soiled his own bed three times so far (we crate him at night) and doesn’t make it through the day -- he starts whining by the door around lunchtime and, if we’re not home, will just go anywhere in the house. How can we fix this? -- Carl B., via email DEAR CARL: How old is Jake? It sounds like, barring any unknown physical issues or illness, he is a young puppy with a small bladder. He simply can’t hold it as long as a fully grown dog. The fact that Jake makes it a point to whine by the door means that the house training is effective, but you may be waiting much too long to take him out. When he has to go, he will go. That includes soiling his crate, which is an absolute last resort for a dog. Follow this guideline, published by the American Kennel Club, called the “month-plus-one” rule: Take your puppy’s age in months, and add one. That gives you a rough estimate of the maximum number of hours Jake should wait before going outside to pee or poop. For example, if Jake is four months old, add one to that number. The total, five, means he should be taken outside every five hours. Every puppy is different, so Jake may need to go out a little sooner. And yes, that means he may need to go out in the middle of the night, or on a pee pad. He should always be taken out just before bedtime and first thing in the morning, regardless of his age. Send your questions, comments or tips to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

Lest We Forget BY DP DUNN
M
emorial Day is often heralded as the unofficial start of summer; yet its origin, traditions and intentions are far more profound and meaningful.
Memorial Day has its roots in Remembrance Day celebrations which began after the War Between the States. Families reflected on the loss of their fathers, sons, cousins, and neighbors. It was a solemn day set aside to pause and reflect on war, service to the nation, and the losses incurred during a long and difficult war. Remembrance Day was later called Decoration Day, and its popularity and practice grew after World Wars 1 and 2 resulting in every state practicing some formal date of remembrance for the nation’s fallen warriors. In 1968, the US Congress instituted the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, moving the celebration of Memorial Day to the last Monday in May. The United States Department of Veterans Affairs cites the purpose of Memorial Day thus: “Memorial Day, which is observed on the last Monday of May, commemorates the men and women who died while in the military service. In observance of the holiday, many people visit cemeteries and memorials, and volunteers often place American flags on each grave site at national cemeteries. A national moment of remembrance takes place at 3:00 p.m. local time.” While is it always appropriate to thank an active duty member of the armed forces, and living Veterans, for their service, Memorial Day belongs specifically to those members of the US military who have died while serving their nation. We thank them through our recollection of their sacrifice to keep us safe and free. Meet PFC Ray Bowman, born in Rochester on April 2nd, 1924. He was the fifth of seven Bowman children. They were a lively bunch. Ray served in D Company of the 23rd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division. Ray was a machine gunner. On Tuesday, April 10th, 1945, Ray wrote this letter home: Dear Mom, How is my favorite Mom? I know you are wondering why you don’t get more mail from me but you can see from the papers we are moving fast and there is hardly even time to wash anymore. This is sure a strange war and right now it is for the better for we are motoring [motorized?] Yesterday we freed quite a few Americans, English, and Russians in a rotten prison camp. The Americans and in Jan [?] had walk [sic] 500 miles from near Poland and they had less than nothing to eat. They were so thin and sick the Germans could not take them back with them. I often wondered about Ray S. and some of the other fellows I know. I sure hope we find them soon. The Russians were slave workers and were mostly women. Oh boy what a celebration we had last night. We are far away from there now tho. On the average I’ve had 2 hours of sleep per night for two weeks now.
We had a radio for tonight and it is swell to hear music again. Gosh sometimes I get so homesick for all those things that I left behind. You should have seen the me after 4 days of no washing. I still have not taken all the dirt off. It’s now one o’clock in the morning, Mom and chow is at 5:30 so guess I’ll hit the hay. Please send me a fruit cake when you can. Love, Ray Eight days later, PFC Raymond J. Bowman died in Leipzig, Germany. Ray was 21 years and 17 days old. This is why we celebrate Memorial Day. Because we cannot thank Ray in person for his sacrifice. He served, and we benefitted as we still do today. Meet 1st Lt. Hiram Appelget of the 95th Bomber Squadron. Lt. Appelget was killed in action on March 1st, 1943. Steven Appelget said of his great uncle, “[Hiram, or ‘Hi’] was a pilot of a B-26 Marauder – the ‘Barrelhouse Bessie’,” Steven said. “When I started seriously working on family history, I made up a slogan for our family: ‘We showed up’. [Hi] showed up. He wasn’t looking for a big military career or even to ‘whup’ the [enemy]. He had a job to do, and he did it – and complained about the food and the conditions along the way. He had a ship to fly and guys to watch out for. And that’s what he did. He showed up.” Hi and Ray both showed up. They both did their jobs. Neither wanted to be a hero. Neither, I imagine, woke up that particular morning expecting to die. Although, when serving in combat, that is a constant possibility. These men made choices to serve their nation. Many served in non-combat positions, and all accepted the risk willingly for home, family, and nation. It is estimated that approximately 1,304,702 men and women have lost their lives serving in the United States military, in armed conflicts, since 1775. That’s one million three hundred four thousand seven hundred two reasons to say a profound and sincere “Thank You!” this Memorial Day. They all ‘showed up’, did their jobs, and gave their lives, and we are in their debt. Remember Hi, Ray and the many others this Memorial Day. Set an alarm for 3pm. Say a prayer for the repose of their eternal souls if you are so inclined, but at least have awareness and gratitude towards all of these departed men and women who will not be marching in any parades, tipping a beer with you, shopping, fishing, camping, playing ball, boating, gardening, or grilling. That’s exactly why we celebrate Memorial Day.

The first recorded road trip across the U.S. began in 1903 with a bet. Someone bet Horatio Nelson Jackson (a physician and automobile pioneer) that he could not travel from San Francisco to New York City in less than 90 days. Accompanied by mechanic Sewall K. Crocker and a dog named Bud, they set off in a 20-horsepower Winston to prove them wrong. Despite numerous mishaps, Jackson and Crocker completed the trip in 63 days.

What were you thinking?! I was backing out of a parking space at a local grocery store. Half way out, a lady with a cart walks right behind me. Of course, I hit my brakes. Then, she has the nerve to yell at me to watch out. Wait, I’m in motion, and you kept walking. What were you thinking? Why, if anything happened, would I would be at fault? No matter how careful I look around and how slowly I’m backing out, you still walked behind a moving vehicle.
S E V RA Thank you! Thank you to the kind person who returned my butterfly cane to the lost & found on Friday, May 13th at the Geneseo Walmart. Cookie I want to express my heartfelt gratitude and thanks to all of the people who helped me look for my dog "Cookie" on Sunday, May 15th. She accidentally got loose in Batavia near Centennial Park and took off like a rocket. Thanks for the help, chicken snacks, kibble, and supportive comments. If you're looking for kind neighbors and amazing people, there's no need to look any further than Batavia! My helpers ranged from small children to mature adults and everyone in-between, walking along the streets calling out for Cookie! This story has a happy ending. Miraculously, I found Cookie a couple hours later. She was worn out, but otherwise, she was fine! Thanks again to everyone for all of your help. God Bless you! A Very Special Thank You! To my little buddy, and my big buddy, my Father, and my Grand-dad. They both served honorably, James C. Marsh, aka Cactus Jack, in the US Navy, during WWII, mostly in the Atlantic fleet. And my Father prepared to be shipped over as a medic in the US Army during the Vietnam war. So thank you for ending that. I love my Dad. A salute to my uncle Mike and my cousin, Rick. Bless you and yours to all those that serve honorably in our armed forces, law enforcement, and the medical field. Be well & many better tomorrows!
Buddy Shoppers Buddy shoppers helping: It’s a very wonderful thing you’re doing, shopping for the elderly who can’t get out. But please respect them and wear a mask. You don’t know if you are sick without symptoms. You could be sick. Even if they are vaccinated, they still could get very very sick and hospitalized due to numerous medical problems. Many of those elderly people think it’s safe for them now to unmask. But it’s really not. Just top off the wonderful thing you’re doing by respecting them and masking up. I know some of those Shoppers who have gone in without masks numerous times. It’s their space; respect it please. My friend had a buddy Shopper like this, and she said he wasn’t masking up, so she had to cancel him for her safety. Chicken Shortage? Wow, what’s next? Ready? The local grocery store had a sign: “No rotisserie chickens due to tornado in Kentucky.” Really? Chickens must be raised only in Kentucky. Don’t farmers raise chickens in New York State, too? Local stores can’t buy from local farms anymore? These excuses never end! Gas Prices There is way too much stupidity in Government. Add ethanol to the pumps to “help” the fuel crisis? Ethanol ruins conventional engines that are not designed for that fuel additive. Ethanol reduces mileage and creates more pollution. It’s funny: the plan to reduce tax on gas begins in June, but since the announcement, look how high prices have risen. Sure, the way it’s going, anything will help. It’s sort of like giving you a quarter back on a hundred dollar purchase.

“There is the noble art of leaving things undone. The wisdom of life consists in the elimination of non-essentials…” ~ Lin Yutang
Perhaps the greatest thief of our time is the notion that we must attend to all the countless little petty tasks that confront us daily. We try to take them in order, complete them if possible and hope for the day when we will have a little time for more important things. What would happen if we simply left the trivial chores undone? If we eliminated the non-essentials, we might find time for more important activity. We might even have time for that long-delayed self-improvement project. It is our belief that a funeral service should be a beautiful experience to remember. It should aid the bereaved in their difficult adjustment to loss.

WORKING PARENTS CAN CREATE BETTER WORK-LIFE BALANCE Many working parents struggle to maintain a healthy balance between their responsibilities at work and their obligations to their families. An inability to maintain that healthy balance can have adverse effects on men and women’s careers as well as the relationships they have with their families. A 2015 survey of more than 2,000 adults commissioned by the workplace solution provider Workfront found that 38 percent of survey participants have missed life events because of a bad work-life balance. Access to technology that means work is never too far away might contribute to poor work-life balance, as 57 percent of respondents also acknowledged feeling that technology has ruined the definition of a family dinner. Finding a healthy balance between work and life at home may require a concerted effort on the part of working parents, but there are ways to successfully juggle a career and family.
IMPROVE ALERTNESS DURING THE WORKDAY Avoid high-fat foods at lunchtime. Foods that are high in fat should always be avoided thanks to their connection to a host of health problems. Such foods also negatively affect energy levels when consumed in the middle of the day. The University of Rochester Medical Center notes that the body digests and absorbs high-fat foods very slowly. That means workers who eat highfat foods for lunch won’t get the afternoon energy boost that lowfat, healthy lunches will provide.

HOW TO HOST A MEMORABLE MEMORIAL DAY BBQ Prep the grill and yard in advance: Memorial Day may be the first big event of the season, and chances are that the grill and yard could use some attention. Make sure all the burners are clean and working properly. Clear clutter from the yard and give patio furniture a thorough cleaning. Add outdoor furniture if you need more seating. Have a spare propane tank on hand so you won’t run out of fuel. If you have a pet, be sure that the yard is cleared of waste.
