Small businesses have such a big impact on their communities, and the world at large, that it might be time to reconsider refering to them as “small.” According to the World Bank, small businesses have a major impact on the world economy, especially in emerging countries. In such nations, small and medium enterprises contribute up to 60 percent of total employment and up to 40 percent of national income. Small businesses figure to frame their economies in emerging countries in the coming decades, and they’re already doing so in developed nations, such as the United States and Canada.

Hi! My name is

Hope. I was rescued in October of 2017 by my Furrever Mom. She took me home to meet my sister Cassie (also a rescue). I am quite the joker and love to hide and sneak up on my Mom & Dad or peek out at them from under the armoire (upside down of course). I bring them presents all the time, but I don’t think Dad likes the snakes very much. I drive my sister nuts chasing her all the time. I love my mom & dad very much, and am very glad mom found me.

SIGNS OF UNSAFE DRIVING IN OLDER DRIVERS • Delayed response to unexpected situations: Frequent close calls and narrowly avoiding collisions when other drivers stop suddenly indicate reduced response time. • Becoming easily distracted while driving: Aging drivers who are easily distracted pose a safety risk to themselves and other motorists. • Decrease in confidence while driving: Only drivers will know if they feel confident enough to drive safely, and it’s vital that aging drivers be honest with themselves. • Having difficulty moving into or maintaining the correct lane of traffic: Lane-assist technology can help drivers recognize how often they’re staying in the correct lane of traffic. • Hitting curbs when making right turns or backing up: Hitting curbs when turning or backing up indicates drivers may be having difficulty controlling their vehicles and/or seeing the road • Getting scrapes or dents on car, garage or mailbox: These signs also indicate drivers are having trouble controlling their vehicles. • Driving too fast or too slow for road conditions: This indicates drivers are not as alert to their surroundings as they need to be to stay safe on the road. AUTO SECTION

Don’t just replace but upgrade your headlight bulbs. Bulbs that have started to dim need to be repla ced, but auto enthusiasts or maintenance-savvy drivers know they can upgrade their bulbs w hen replacing them. Indu stry experts recommend replacing headlamp bulbs every tw o years, and replacing them in pairs to make sure the vehicle’s lighting is equally balanced. But rather than sticking w ith the bulbs provided by the car maker, look for a bulb that makes it easier to see at night and during hazardous conditions. These headlights put more light on the road, helping to make up for poor w eather, dimly lit roads, aging headlights, and even the loss of n ight vision many drivers experience as they age. Capable of providing up to 100 percent more light than the stan dard halogen bulbs found on the majority of vehicles today, special headlights create a better beam patte rn that is dramatically longer than the standard bulbs, vastly improving driver vision and safety.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

Are Coyotes Really a Threat in Suburbs? DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I bought a house in the suburbs last month. My next-door neighbor warned me that there is a coyote in the area and not to let my cat outside. I’ve read that coyotes are very shy and won’t bother dogs, and they aren’t fast enough to catch a cat. Should I just ignore the warning? -- Pet Dad in Marlborough, Massachusetts DEAR PET DAD: Coyotes have made a comeback in the U.S. and are present in many suburbs and even in the city. While coyotes are less likely to attack larger dogs, they’ve been known to go after smaller dogs. And cats are not necessarily fast enough to escape, either. So, if the neighbors are reporting a coyote in the area, take heed. Don’t let your cat or dog out in the backyard unsupervised. Even if you have a fence around the yard, unless it’s over 6 feet tall (and not all municipalities allow that height) it may not discourage a coyote from hopping it and nosing around. Coyotes are mostly looking for food. They’re opportunists. If there is cat or dog food left outside, for example, they’ll eat it -- and probably come back later, looking for more. This is one way that conflicts with coyotes (and other local wildlife) can start. If they have a reason to come onto your property to begin with, and then start to see your pets as another food source -- you’ve got a problem. To sum up: * Supervise pets when they’re outside. Stay out there with them. * Don’t leave their food or water outside unattended; bring it in each evening. * Consider wildlife-resistant fencing to keep coyotes and other unwanted critters out of your yard. Send your tips, comments and questions to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

G VPEN N YSAVER THE HISTORY OF BOUTONNIÈRES

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne

Men wear boutonnières on special occasions, including weddings, religious ceremonies and prom night. At weddings, the groom and his groomsmen typically boutonnières. But some historians believe men have not always worn flowers strictly on special occasions. Some believe the modern-day boutonnière traces its lineage to sporting events in ancient civilizations, including Egypt. During those times, men might have worn certain colored flowers as a show of support for particular participants in sporting events, not unlike how many modern sports fans wear team shirts, jerseys and other attire to display their support for their favorite teams. But according to GentlemansGazette.com, the boutonnières of today likely started appearing just a few centuries ago. A 1771 painting of British Captain William Wade by the artist Thomas Gainsborough depicted Wade wearing a bouquet of flowers in his top buttonhole. And in the 19th century, men’s fashion included coats that folded over the top, revealing the inside of the buttonhole. Boutonnières provided an aesthetically appealing way to cover up that buttonhole. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

SMALL MOMENTS MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE (NAPSI)—There are about 74 million children in America today and if you’re a parent, here’s something you should know: involved fathers— whether they live with their kids or not—can help their children lead happier, healthier and more successful lives. Children who feel close to their fathers are two times more likely to go to college or find a job after high school, 80 percent less likely to end up in jail and 50 percent less likely to experience depression.1 The small moments kids enjoy spending with their fathers can make a big difference in their lives. If you’re like most fathers, you’re already doing what you can to be a great dad. Here’s a look at five easy ways to keep it up.

What Dads are Already Doing Recent research suggests fathers are already very involved:

• Garage Floors • Porches/Patios • Durable & Cost Effective

• 90 percent consider their role as a dad to be rewarding day in and day out.3

* With the start of barbeque season, here are two tips straight from my local butcher about grilling meat: First, let meats come to room temperature before cooking. It allows the meat to cook more evenly, and you won’t end up with a cold center and a burnt outside. Secondly, when your meat comes off the grill, give it time to rest before serving. This allows the juiced to redistribute throughout the cut of meat, and you’ll end up with juicy goodness in every bite. -- JoAnn

• 78 percent have talked to their child’s teacher about progress in school.4

• 61 percent have attended a PTA or other school meeting.5 6

• Over half have helped with a class trip, special project or activity. • Over a third of fathers have helped with coaching their children’s sports teams.7

Even though fathers are largely more involved than in previous generations, dads today still want to be more engaged. Nearly half say they don’t spend enough time with their kids and want to do a better job at parenting.8 To help more fathers understand the importance of their role in their children’s lives, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Administration for Children and Families, the National Responsible Fatherhood Clearinghouse (@fatherhoodgov), and the Ad Council (@ adcouncil) have partnered on a national Responsible Fatherhood Campaign. “All dads should be supported and celebrated for their efforts on Father’s Day and year-round because we know how the story ends for the kids whose fathers show up for them consistently—these children and families thrive,” says Kenneth Braswell (@braswellkenneth), Director, National Responsible Fatherhood Clearinghouse and Fathers Incorporated. The campaign drives to Fatherhood.gov a free resource that offers information, tools and more. Dads can visit the website for ideas to get involved and stay involved in their children’s lives. Other resources include activity suggestions, homework help, online games and a long list of dad jokes! No matter how busy you may be, make time for your children. It only takes a moment to make a moment. Learn More: For helpful tips, tools, information, jokes and resources, visit www.fatherhood.gov. 1 - Primus, L. (2017). SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles Help With COVID Funeral Expenses

No one wants to think about it, but it’s a fact of life. People are dying of COVID. They’re leaving behind families that, in many cases, are already struggling with financial worries. Add in the cost of a funeral, and many will need help. The Federal Emergency Management Agency is stepping in with funding. Under the Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act of 2021 and the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021, FEMA is offering financial assistance for funeral expenses incurred after Jan. 20, 2020. FEMA has started an assistance phone line (844-684-6333) that’s open Monday-Friday, 9am-9pm ET. Its representatives will help get applications completed. The call will take about 20 minutes, so they can get all the details right. Have all your information in front of you before you call. Once you’re given an application number, you’ll need to send supporting documentation to FEMA, typically by fax or mail. To learn more, go to the FEMA website: www.fema.gov. Scroll down the front page to the item dated April 12, 2021, Funeral Assistance FAQ. There are a number of criteria to see if you’re qualified for help. You must be a U.S. citizen, noncitizen national or qualified alien. You must be the one who paid the funeral expenses. Funeral homes cannot call for you. If several of you contributed to the expenses, tell them at FEMA, but typically there needs to be one application. There are a number of categories of funeral expense that might be covered, including headstone, casket, clergy services and more. A warning: Scammers are always looking for the next way to con people out of money. Now they’re calling people (possibly those who were listed in funeral notices) and offering to help fill out the applications for assistance. Don’t fall for it. FEMA is not going to call you. Miles Davis (1926-1991): Compared to other jazz legends, Illinois-born Miles Davis was introduced to music rather late. It wasn’t until Davis was 13 years old that his father introduced him to the trumpet, an introduction that would dramatically alter the course of jazz music. Under the tutelage of local music school director Elwood Buchanan, Davis learned to play the trumpet without vibrato, which Biography.com notes marked a departure from the style of trumpet-playing popular at the time. A true pioneer, Davis is considered one of the most influential figures in the history of jazz and 20th century music.

GENERAL CONTRACTING

FRESHEN UP YOUR HOM E FOR THE SPRING SEASON

WHAT TO DO WHEN A PROJECT STALLS Honestly assess whether or not you can finish the job. Do-it-yourselfers may have the abilities to complete a project, but they should not let their pride get in the way of their ultimate goal, which is the completion of the project. In addition to money, time or lack thereof, is often the culprit behind stalled projects. Homeowners with full-time jobs, families or both may not be able to find the time to complete a job in a timely fashion. If the project has been stuck in neutral and no sudden windfall of free time is on the horizon, start contacting contractors to finish the job for you.

ROOFING MATERIALS TRANSFORM THE LOOK AND FUNCTIONALITY OF A HOME

TREE SERVICES

When renovating a home, homeowners may not give ample thought to the roof unless there is a leak or another sign of damage. It’s easy to forget about the roof when materials are working properly. Some people put off replacing or repairing a roof simply because of the costs of such undertakings. However, the right roof can improve the appearance of a home and provide protection against the elements, potentially preventing damage to a home’s interior as well.

Landscaping is typically viewed as a chore by homeowners, many of who enjoy doing some work on their lawns and gardens. But only few homeowners may recognize the potential dangers of lawn maintenance. The Consumer Product Safety Commission reports that more than 230,000 people per year are treated for various injuries resulting from lawn and garden tools. Common injuries include loss of fingers, lacerations, broken and dislocated bones, eye injuries, and burns. Many of these injuries are entirely preventable if homeowners prioritize safety when tending to their lawns and gardens.

S E V RA God bless volunteer firefighters! On May 8th, 2021, our worst nightmare happened. Five townhouses in Penfield caught on fire. The Penfield Fire Department, along with seven other companies, responded around 5AM to the fire. By then, it was at least a 5 Alarm fire, burning like an inferno. The firefighters worked so hard and risked their lives to save our homes. Three of the townhomes were a total loss, and two, including ours, were heavily damaged with smoke and water. In the following weeks, a lot of people, some neighbors and some we don't know, have rallied around us with donations of clothing, personal products, laundry products, and gift cards. There are many hugs and meals being offered. I have been a volunteer firefighter daughter and wife. Now my son is a 3rd generation volunteer firefighter. I have served as the fire dispatcher. I have never been the on the other side, and now that I have, I have a better appreciation for the men and women who serve this community. Thank you, Penfield Firefighters!

Drones It makes me sick that it is legal for anyone to fly drones equipped with cameras over private property. Parents have no way of knowing who may be taking pictures or videos of their children, and there’s nothing to be done about it. It’s illegal to block the drones’ signals but not for them to surveil private property and families.

Enough Trump A man on a road I travel on had a Trump 2021 sign that was put up in his front yard AFTER the election. He recently replaced that with a Trump 2020 sign that he had up before the election. It’s time to take down all Trump signs.

Political signs Let’s stop the back and forth about the Trump signs. Some people will leave their signs up forever! Let’s enjoy having who we have in the White House.

Fundraiser disappointment A dinner fundraiser was advertised at a local school, which I get every year. The ad said you could either buy a pre-sale ticket or tickets would be available at the door. After driving there, I was told they had sold out. Very disappointed.

Beautiful Downtown Hats off to the Avon Garden Club and Avon Village Crew for planning, planting and maintaining our beautiful downtown gardens. Always a pleasure to drive around the circle and take in all the islands and the blooms of the season. To all those who plant, weed and water, your efforts are truly appreciated.

Memorial Day: Remembering our Fallen Heroes & Honoring their Sacrifice BY AMANDA DUDEK

I

t is no exaggeration to say we are living in tumultuous times. Some of those serving in our nation’s military are in combat even today. Meanwhile, others have found “battles” being waged on the home front. In fact, it has been said that we are “more divided than ever before.” But are we? Memorial Day, a hallowed day when we remember our nation’s fallen military men and women, has its roots in the American Civil War. This war between the states, in which brother took up arms against brother, was a truly divided time in American history. Thankfully, no matter how vehemently we may disagree with each other today, we have yet to draw battle lines, wage war, and amass combat’s tragic death count on our own soil. The Civil War was fought for many reasons, not least of which was the despicable and heinous practice of slavery which had to be forever abolished. At the same time, the impact of such a massive internal conflict devastated much of our country. It was in this devastation, on the battlefields littered with our dead, over the aching pain of their loss that unity slowly returned once again. General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, was the first to officially declare a Memorial Day in 1868. Taking place in Arlington National Cemetery, the first Memorial Day (then Remembrance Day) was a time to place flowers on Confederate and Union soldiers’ graves. In death, these soldiers were no longer enemies, only brave human beings who gave everything for what they believed in. But oh, the cost! With the advent of World War I, Memorial Day became an official national day of remembrance for every American soldier who gave the ultimate sacrifice to protect our freedoms. One of those freedoms,

Freedom of Speech, is a right which demands tolerance, a tolerance that is necessary for the coexistence and peace of any diverse population. Our nation is beautifully diverse in so many ways, yet there are many issues which threaten to divide us, which threaten to engulf our nation in bloodshed, but if violence should come, what then? How many of our estranged neighbors, friends, and even family would no longer be enemies, only men and women who also paid a terrible price? Since World War I, other wars have come and gone, and our present conflict may be drawing to a close. Our valiant soldiers have laid down their lives in defense of a country whose many freedoms we all enjoy. This Memorial Day, may we remember our many ancestors and loved ones who paid dearly for these precious freedoms, and may we honor them always. As we gather together this weekend with our friends, family, and neighbors – especially those with whom we do not see eye to eye – let us remember our fallen heroes. May their sacrifice inspire us to seek peace over violence, to choose tolerance rather than anger, and to reject division in favor of common ground. Love to write? “Conditions are never just right....” ~ William Feather Feather is talking to those of us who never seem to manage to get started toward our goals. We resolve to do better, to accomplish more, to eliminate our bad habits or to help others, but somehow we never actually start. We explain (to ourselves) that we’re waiting for the right conditions to prevail. In truth, the conditions may be exactly right but our excuses are based on labeling current conditions as unsuitable. If we really want to accomplish anything, we must accept conditions as they are, or alter them to better suit our needs. Meniscal Tear in Knee Might Not Need Surgery

Sue DeBruyne, Au.D. Doctor of Audiology

Discover the Human Touch in Hearing Technology

Lakeville 3513 Thomas Dr., Suite 2

---

Henrietta

DEAR DR. ROACH: While chasing my cat, I dove to the ground and both my knees took a beating. They were bruised but felt fine. A few days after this, my left knee started to bother me. I put on a brace to see if that would help (as it usually does), but it didn’t. I went to my chiropractor a few days later and had an adjustment and deep tissue massage. The next day, I was walking my dog and had to stop, as I couldn’t move my knee. About 13 years ago, I had a torn meniscus in the same knee, and it healed without surgery with the assistance of my chiropractor, massage therapist and acupuncture. I called my doctor’s office, and he was out of town. His nurse suggested that I go to an urgent care facility to have an X-ray of my knee, which I did. The doctor said that nothing was broken but that I should follow up with an MRI. I saw my doctor a few days later and brought my X-ray, etc. He said I don’t need an MRI. I am not looking for knee surgery, but wouldn’t an MRI indicate if it is a torn meniscus, pulled ligament, osteoarthritis, etc., so I could get the proper treatment? What would that be? -- R.Z. ANSWER: The menisci are ring-shaped cartilage structures that sit on top of the tibia and provide stability and shock absorption to the knee. Given the mechanism of injury and your prior history, a meniscal tear is a very likely possibility. Symptoms that support a tear in the meniscus would include a locking of the knee or a giving sensation while walking, often associated with pain. A careful physical exam can usually make the diagnosis of a meniscal tear. A suspected meniscal tear does not usually require an MRI, as most will heal with conservative management. (I refer nearly all to physical therapy rather than the treatments you used, but I won’t argue with your success.) I reserve the MRI for people in whom surgery would be contemplated. Since surgery is no better than placebo for many people with a torn meniscus (based on a fascinating 2017 study from Finland), I am particularly careful to refer only people who have not gotten better with a good trial of conservative management. ***

RECOGNIZE POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS HOUSEHOLD CHEMICALS All-purpose cleaners: Many cleaners list bleach and ammonia among their ingredients. Bleach may be listed as sodium hypochlorite. When used as directed in a well-ventilated space, bleach and ammonia can be relatively safe. However, fumes from bleach or ammonia can cause rashes and skin irritation and irritate the eyes and respiratory tract. Bleach and ammonia should never be mixed because mixing the two can produce a deadly chloramine gas. Vinegar and baking soda can be used as a replacement for many household cleaning products, and these alternatives have virtually no dangerous side effects.

We Care About

Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy

DON’T LET STAINS RUIN YOUR SMILE When bright white teeth are your goal, it’s good to know the causes of dental stains so you can avoid them. There are many products and procedures for whitening your teeth available at local drug stores as well as your dentist’s office, but if you want to maintain whitened teeth, there are some foods to avoid and habits to change. If you smoke... stop now. Foods with bright colors are likely to leave their mark on your teeth, so if you can’t brush after enjoying berries, pasta sauce, or curry, try rinsing your mouth with water and/or chewing some sugar-free gum to loosen some of the staining particles. Do the same after drinking coffee, tea, or red wine.

In addition to the way other people see you, the many methods of cosmetic dentistry can greatly improve the way you see yourself. Thanks to procedures such as whitening, bonding, veneers, contouring, and implants, you can have the smile you’ve always wanted. Here at BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, we will use all our skills, artistry, and experience to design a treatment plan that exactly suits your needs and lifestyle. For an appointment at 6 Batavia City Centre, please call 585.343.4246.

P.S. Be careful when using tooth-whitening products since overuse can actually cause permanent discoloration of teeth.

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On May 29, 1914, in one of the worst maritime disasters in history, heavy fog causes a collision of boats -- the Empress of Ireland and the Storstad -- that kills 1,073 people on the St. Lawrence River in Canada.

FUNGAL CURE!! YOUR TOENAILS • Were you embarrassed this summer to wear sandals or go barefoot because of thick, yellow nails? Now’s the time to get treatment. • If left untreated, fungal toenails can cause: recurring athlete’s foot, infected ingrown toenails (requiring surgery) and discomfort wearing shoes, not to mention their unsightly appearance. • Recent studies show that fungal nail infections lead to a weakened immune system. During times like this we all need to keep our immune systems functioning optimally. • Patients with diabetes, poor circulation, and numbness to their feet can develop more serious complications. • There are safer, new topical medications available to help cure fungal toenails. • A simple one a day pill for 3 months will usually cure fungal toenails within 6-9 months from the start of treatment. • Treatment now may result in clear, thinner nails. • Call now for an appointment to determine if you’re a candidate for this newer treatment.

How quickly life seems to go by in our electronic lives these days. Growing weary of the constant digital intrusion in your life? It’s called digital fatigue and it’s getting worse.

Welcome Back to Sanity

DID YOU KNOW? Modern technology has forever transformed the classroom. As calculators replaced abacuses, mobile phone apps have now replaced calculators, and such advancements continue to change how students learn. One way schools are notably different from those of the past is through the absence of a once major component of the classroom layout. Chalkboards are either missing or completely retrofitted in modern learning environments. In the 1800s, slate blackboards were the new technology, replacing handheld tablets of wood or slate. Within the last few years, schools have increasingly opted for cleaner “white boards” or “smartboards,” which are digitally connected to computers and offer touch interfaces similar to those on tablets and smartphones. As ebooks replace textbooks and more assignments are handed in via digital documents, lockers may be the next to vanish. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

But in certain ways, the reliance on technology has made working as a team more complicated. People have grown accustomed to spending large quantities of time alone working at computers or on phones and tablets, potentially compromising their ability to work directly with others when the need arises. According to Monster.com, when it comes to choosing a candidate for a new job or promotion, employers consistently say they want a team player. That means it’s advantageous for professionals looking to further their careers to brush up on their team-building and social skills.
