WAYS TO ENJOY MORE DAIRY Sprinkle on some cheese. Cheese has less lactose than other dairy products, making it easier on the stomach for those who may have issues consuming dairy. Consider sprinkling some parmesan cheese on an apple or popcorn for an afternoon snack, or have an ounce of cheddar with a small portion of nuts for calcium and protein.

Discovering Cutting Edge Ag Tech with DeLaval

Laser Technology Green Laser Scarecrows: No, this isn’t science fiction; it’s a revolutionary technological innovation. As it turns out, birds—prevalent and extremely destructive agricultural pests—are sensitive to the color green. Armed with this knowledge, a University of Rhode Island researcher helped to design the first green laser scarecrow. Green laser light can reach out as far as 600,’ yet in sunlight, it is invisible to humans.

BY AMANDA DUDEK

T

here can sometimes be a tendency to think of farming, with its ancient roots and traditions, as archaic, filled with horse-drawn plows and milking cows by hand. While there are certainly those who still use these older methods, today’s modern farms are filled with incredible agricultural technology. Some of the latest innovations are so advanced they seem like the stuff of fiction, yet they are available right in our metaphorical backyards. Automated Dairy Installations & Faromatics – Robotics, A.I. and Big Data Robotic Herd Monitoring: The smaXtec TruRumi™ is an example of bolus technology for dairy cows. This incredibly advanced piece of technology operates a little bit like an internal “Fitbit” inside each cow. The internal device sits inside each cow’s stomach (or reticulum) where it remains without being digested or passed. There, it constantly monitors a cow’s body temperature, activity levels, and rumination, an important factor in milk production and quality. This system, using its own cloud, sends data 24/7, allowing dairy farmers to detect concerns affecting an individual cow or group of cows. Thanks to its own A.I., the system also presents recommended actions, sends calving alerts, and can even recommend optimal feeding for each cow based on pH value measurement. Automated, Data Reporting Milking System: The DeLaval VMS V300 is one of the most sophisticated robotic milking systems on the market. DeLaval, with its local branches, is proud to offer its VMS V300 with its advanced control and monitoring capabilities. The system is fully remote and provides visual reports, analysis, and individual cow status, activity, location, performance statistics and data. Not only does this robotic system provide quicker and better attachment rates as well as better, faster, and smother milking performance, but it also cleans each teat, automatically separates pre-milk, and self-cleans after each milking. Says DeLaval, “The key technology that makes this possible is InSight. What you see is the smoothest, fastest, and most accurate arm that we’ve ever created. Driving this performance is the interplay of our most sophisticated camera, hardware and software ever seen in a milking environment.” Other examples of cutting-edge livestock farming technology include automated cleaning systems, Armenta’s non-antibiotic treatment using acoustic pulse technology (APT), and automated feeder systems.

Ken Elliot of Elliot Farm in Lakeville, Massachusetts put these new green laser scarecrows to the test. Elliot created nine of his own green laser scarecrow prototypes and put them to work. The results were astonishing. Using these scarecrows in conjunction with bird distress calls, Elliot was able to reduce his crop loss due to bird damage from 80% down to 8%. Typically, farmers can expect properly utilized green laser technology to reduce crop damage due to birds by as much as 70-90%. Autonomous Equipment Precision Farming Technology: Self-navigating Tractors, unlike self-driving cars which have yet to become safe and feasible, are a reality. Available locally through businesses like Monroe Tractor, precision farming services offer several benefits. With features such as GPS mapping and guidance, precision farming reduces labor, increases the precision of such automated equipment as tractors, harvesters, seeding and weeding devices, and more. These time saving devices allow farm families to improve their productivity with increased time to spend on other tasks. The field of agriculture is by no means static. As global populations grow and the demand for food increases, technological innovations in agriculture also continue to develop at an astounding rate. Our local farm families are on the forefront of these advancements, continuing to embrace new technologies as they strive for peak efficiency and production.

641 East Main St., Batavia • (585) 219-4735 POTENTIAL CULPRITS BEHIND THINNING GRASS Leaf spot The Center for Agriculture, Food and the Environment at the University of Massachusetts Amherst notes that leaf spot diseases affect both cool- and warm-season turfgrasses. Various fungi can cause leaf spot. Symptoms and the timing of the appearance of leaf spot will vary depending on which fungi is causing the problem. For example, bipolaris sorokiniana, which affects grasses in warm, wet summer months, produces small spots that are dark purple to black. Dreschslera poae is another fungi that causes leaf spot, and it also produces dark purple to black spots. However, it tends to appear in the spring when the weather is cool and moist. Understanding the different fungi and when they typically strike can help homeowners identify what is causing their grass to thin. In such situations, professional landscapers can be invaluable resources as well.

Entertaining guests is easier when there’s a dedicated space where visitors can feel at home. When furnishing a living room, keep the guest room in mind. A sofa that opens up to a bed or a convertible sectional can be a comfortable place for guests to lay their heads. Side tables provide guests with places to store their belongings, and an empty storage chest can house bed linens or guests’ clothing.

HOW TO CONSERVE WATER AT HOME Conservation is an essential component of an eco-friendly lifestyle. Conserving the planet’s natural resources can have a profound impact on the planet, and conserving at home is a great way for men and women to get the ball rolling on their conservation efforts. One of the most effective ways to conserve at home is to reduce water consumption. Few people give much thought to how much water they consume at home, as water bills tend to be considerably lower than other utilities like energy and phone. But even if efforts to conserve water at home may not make a dramatic impact on monthly utility bills, many measures can go a long way toward preserving one of the planet’s most precious resources.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

Look Into Crowdfunding to Rehome Inherited Pets DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’m writing in regard to the person who “inherited” her relative’s pets but is unable to keep them. While directly posting the pets for adoption on social media may not be a good option for all of the reasons you previously listed, I do think there’s an opportunity for Sherrie to harness the reach of those platforms to raise the money she needs to get them rehomed properly and to cover their medical care. I’m continually amazed (and encouraged) by the kindness of strangers on GoFundMe pages for pets. -- Lauren P.

MOMENTS IN TIME * On June 14, 1789, English Captain William Bligh and 18 others, cast adrift from the HMS Bounty seven weeks before, reach the East Indies after traveling nearly 4,000 miles in a small open boat. On April 28, they were set adrift with 25 gallons of water, 150 pounds of bread, 30 pounds of pork, six quarts of rum and six bottles of wine. (The History Channel)

DEAR LAUREN: That’s certainly an option to cover the cost of their care. Crowdfunding is an increasingly popular way to quickly raise cash to cover pets’ medical needs and care needs. GoFundMe has dedicated a page with several ideas for pet funding: https://www.gofundme.com/c/fundraising-ideas/ pets, and there is even a pet-specific crowdfunding organization, Waggle: https://www.waggle.org, which helps owners raise money for pets’ medical procedures. To crowdfund a pet’s care and treatment, do plenty of research first. Look at active fundraisers to see what messages are effective and double-check the rules about pet fundraising at each crowdfunding site. To rehome a pet, there is at least one online resource that may be helpful. Adopt-A-Pet and Petco’s rehome service (https://rehome. adoptapet.com/) is a go-between service that helps owners connect with people who are looking to adopt. I still recommend that Sherrie contacts the local shelter to get information about rehoming or, if all else fails, surrendering the pets safely to the shelter. But the above options may be a great help as she hunts for new owners for her relative’s pets. Send your questions, tips or comments to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

Gardeners Do the milkweed plants in my front perennial bed have any significant impact on monarch butterflies? I am trying to decide if I should keep or remove them. Thanks. I understand your angst. The number of monarchs is declining for several reasons, including habitat loss in central Mexico where they over-winter and summer habitat loss in the Midwest. There is a lot of talk about planting milkweed to help them out. But common field milkweed is not a very attractive plant, spreads invasively underground, and is difficult to remove. I wouldn’t want it in my front garden bed. One person’s milkweed plant probably doesn’t make a difference, but if many people plant it, it could make a difference over time. Common field milkweed, Asclepius syriaca, serves as both a preferred host plant (where these butterflies lay their eggs and larva/caterpillars feed) and a nectar source for adults. That’s why people encourage planting this specific plant.

from Cornell Cooperative Extension, Livingston County But Monarchs can use other types of milkweed in this region including Butterfly Weed (Asclepius Tuberosa), and Swamp Milkweed (Asclepius Incarnata). These two plants are much better suited for home gardens. They are more attractive and will not spread invasively like common milkweed. The article from the University of Vermont at the following link offers many details about monarchs and milkweed. https://pss.uvm.edu/ppp/articles/ monarch.html Our one-acre lawn is overrun with Creeping Charlie, and it is spreading daily. Is there a way to combat it without killing off the grass we’d like to save? Glechoma hederacea, better known as Creeping Charlie and ground ivy, is one of the most common and unfortunately hard to control lawn and garden weeds. A healthy lawn will help prevent creeping Charlie from getting established. Over-seeding bare spots in a lawn with an appropriate grass seed

will help crowd out the weed. Another strategy is to mow at a height of 3 inches. This allows grass to have healthier roots and blades as well as shade out weed seedlings. Hand weeding can be difficult and frustrating due to the fact that there are roots at many of the leaf nodes. If the soil is moist and you are careful to dig the roots, you will be more successful. Weeding them from garden beds is a lot easier. Removing them as soon as they show up is the key to success. A hoe, rake or dethatching tool can be helpful. If a herbicide is required, studies have shown that spring and fall are the best times to apply. More than a single season application may be needed. During the heat of the summer, plants are not growing as fast and not as susceptible to the effect of herbicides. These herbicides are directed at broadleaf plants, not grass, so are not likely useful in gardens or harmful to the grass. Lawn herbicides with multiple active ingredients are most effective against difficult to control weeds. Products that con-

tain triclopyr, such as Ortho Weed-B-Gon Chickweed, Clover and Oxalis Killer have proven effective. So has Ortho Weed-B-Gon Max plus Crabgrass Control with quinclorac. Other brand products are available. Read the label for listed controls and application directions. Some information from http://erie.cce.cornell.edu/ resources/article-42-creeping-charlie-may-2017

Can She Donate Plasma Despite Gene Mutation?

Discover the Human Touch in Hearing Technology

Accepting New Patients.

Lakeville

DEAR DR. ROACH: When my mother

3513 Thomas Dr., Suite 2

discovered she has a factor V mutation, everyone in the family decided to be tested as a precaution. This is a hereditary item, which I am sure you know. It was determined that I carry the gene. I am 65. I have had no issues, and it probably never would have been discovered if we did not go looking for it. This was discovered over 10 years ago and is listed on all my charts. I would like to donate plasma for extra money. I am not on any type of blood thinners except for a baby aspirin every morning. I take a statin for cholesterol control. Can I donate my plasma? -- S.S. ANSWER: Factor V is a blood clotting factor made in the liver. A common mutation in the gene, called factor V Leiden, confers a small increased risk to developing blood clots. People with factor V Leiden and who have never had a blood clot are generally not started on medication to prevent one; however, they may need more aggressive prophylactic treatment to prevent clot at a time of surgery, for example. Although some experts use aspirin in this situation, there is not good evidence to support it. People with factor V Leiden may donate blood, platelets or plasma safely, as long as they are not on an anticoagulant such as warfarin. Only a very few medicines prevent people from donating blood. In addition to anticoagulants, these include medicines that can cause serious birth defects (such as Accutane, used for acne; finasteride and dutasteride, used for prostate enlargement and baldness; and Aubagio, a treatment for multiple sclerosis) and those which might cause infection risk (human-derived growth hormone).

Antibacterial products: Antibacterial soaps, lotions and wipes may contain triclosan, triclocarban and at least 17 additional ingredients that are linked to various negative health effects. In September 2016, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration banned the use of these antibacterial agents. These chemicals can disrupt hormone cycles and cause muscle weakness. “There’s no data demonstrating that over-the-counter antibacterial soaps are better at preventing illness than washing with plain soap and water,” the FDA said in a press release issued shortly after the rule was announced.

Most teeth whitening techniques use either hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide to lighten teeth. While there are several at-home, over-the-counter teeth whitening options, these generally contain a lower percentage of peroxide, can take significantly longer than clinical treatments, and don’t produce as effective or long-lasting results as a professional treatment. Treatments supervised by a dental professional offer at-home options as well, in addition to in-clinic treatments. Custom-made whitening trays are fitted to your teeth, filled with peroxide-based gel, and can be applied at the clinic or in the comfort of your home. Other in-office options include peroxide gel application and power bleaching with a peroxide solution, both of which can be enhanced with LED light application.

What is Wrong The United States should stop sending all these billions of dollars to other countries to help their war efforts. Next, it will be troops. We have too many places that need that money here for food, health care, jobs...I could go on and on. The idea is we need our tax dollars here. The government can’t take care of the Veterans we have now. (I know because I am a disabled Veteran.) I see all the time how we are taken care of. We should get rid of all the rich politicians and put middle class Americans in their jobs! Also, I just heard that the shooter from the Buffalo shooting pled not guilty. Come on! Let’s get real and call a murderer a murderer, and stop all the nonsense!

Some Things Never Change Some people forget the past. Those who believe that disarming a society makes everyone safer, I believe, are those people. When this country was founded, guns were used against the government at the time, which had become too powerful, and was trampling on the rights of its subjects. The founding of our country was, in part, because the right of the citizens to keep their government in check, was of utmost importance. Through the centuries, history has shown us that when a society is disarmed, they become subjects of the ruling class. The most recent example has been China, where they have subjected the population to the heavy fist of control. Even though our government has more powerful weapons than its citizens, we’ve also seen how a determined population can defend and beat back mighty military forces, as has happened in Afghanistan. I have never had any one of my firearms injure anyone on its own. If inanimate objects are the problem, best to get rid of cars and booze.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles How to Defend Against the Newest Scams They’re getting better at what they do, more sophisticated and slick ... scammers, that is. They’ve had lots of practice, and many are truly skilled, but what they all have in common is that they want your money and your information. Scams against seniors get worse by the year, and the pandemic hasn’t helped. Many of the current scams are COVID-related: A scammer will offer to send you a box of at-home test kits -- for a fee. A fake contact tracer will call and claim to need to know your Social Security number for identity purposes. Some will say that your latest doctor bill won’t be paid unless you give them your Medicare number. Others will claim to need your banking information so they can do a direct deposit of the stimulus money the government is sending you. Some are new for this year: Supposed Amazon employees will call or send email to warn you about a large purchase. Fake rental-assistance payment scammers will try to get your personal information. Far too many seniors are scammed each and every day. In 2020, seniors lost over $1 billion to fraud, with an average loss of over $9,000. But you can stop it for yourself and not be a victim. Feel free to be rude. Hang up on people who are likely scammers. Don’t even bother saying goodbye. Just slam the phone down. Delete emails that have any links without clicking on them. Don’t bother opening the door to people you don’t know. Use a black marker to cover the information on old pill bottles. Bonus Tip: Invest in a shredder. Look for one that does confetti cuts (small pieces instead of strips). Shred everything that has your name, address and account or credit card numbers. Even envelopes with your name and address can give clues to scammers. Shred them.

This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

“Absence extinguishes small passions and increases grest ones, as the wind will blow out a candle and blow in a fire…” ~ La Rochefoucauld

. . . . and much more!!

Call to schedule a tour and inquire about specials! (585) 344-2345

This observation by the great French writer and moralist of the early 17th century, explains the apparent contradiction of the two old adages…”Out of sight, out of mind” and “Absence makes the heart grow fonder.” If an attraction is but a passing fancy, it may very well be eliminated by a period of separation. But, if two people enjoy a great mutual love, an absence…even of prolonged duration…will only increase their devotion to one another. Thoughtful people may wish to make all arrangements for their own funeral services, well in advance of need. Financial aspects can also be pre-arranged. Out staff will discuss this with you, in your home if you prefer. Phone us, no obligation.

ADVICE FOR A SUCCESSFUL CAREER CHANGE Research the job market. Look into the industries for the field you are considering. Is it the right time for success in this field? Industries tend to ebb and flow. Do not leave a job only to find the next career has few, if any, openings. Job growth projections are available through resources like the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Having a yard sale? Here’s a great way to put out extra signs when you don’t have a way to stake them into the ground: “Write your sign advertising your yard sale on the sides of a big box. Place it where you want it, and add a large rock to the inside, then tape shut. We did this when we had no poles to tape signs to or any other way to get them to stand up. It worked really well!” -- D.R. in Georgia

When nurses go to work each day, many report to hospitals while others work at private practices. For others, a day at the office takes place at research labs. According to the online nursing resource Nurse.org, research nurses develop and implement studies to investigate and provide information on new medications, vaccinations and medical procedures. Research nurses, sometimes referred to as clinical nurse researchers or nurse researchers, typically have advanced degrees, and many first work as research assistants, clinical data collectors and/or clinical research monitors to gain some practical experience as they pursue or consider pursuing their degrees. Some research nurses even conduct independent research, though Nurse.org notes that such professionals need advanced degrees such as an MSN or Ph.D. to pursue such a path. More information about becoming a research nurse can be found at www.Nurse.org. EMPLOYMENT
