HOST A SUCCESSFUL YARD SALE Instead of giving away unwanted items that have gathered dust around the house, many people turn to garage and yard sales to transform their clutter into some extra money. Yard sales may not be a “get rich quick” scheme, but they present an environmentally friendly way to clean up a home. What’s more, they can be an ideal way to connect with neighbors and meet new people. Any money earned is an added bonus. Statistics collecting resource Statistics Brain says that roughly 165,000 yard/garage sales take place in the United States each week. Nearly 700,000 people purchase something at those sales, leading to millions of dollars exchanging hands.

ADDRESS WINDSHIELD DAMAGE PROMPTLY Windshields are designed to protect drivers and their vehicles from wind and other natural elements while the cars are in motion. Windshields are made from tempered glass, which is processed by controlled thermal or chemical treatments to increase its strength compared to normal glass. While relatively strong for a pieces of glass, windshields are not impervious to damage. All it takes is a single rock or piece of road debris to be kicked up from the roadway and hit the windshield to cause a problem. Every day, motorists encounter pebbles or other small missiles that bounce up from the road and come in contact with their windshields. Many deflect with no problem, but under high speeds, debris can cause chips, dings, and even cracks in the windshield. Cracks easily spread from road vibration and heat and can compromise the integrity of the windshield. If your car’s windshield is cracked and it shatters during a collision, you and your passengers are at great risk of injury. In addition, police officers can write tickets if windshields appear to be unsafe. So it’s in drivers’ best interests to repair damaged windshields promptly. Drivers may be able to repair small dings themselves with a do-it-yourself windshield kit available at automotive retailers. If a crack is less than six to 12 inches long, it can probably be repaired as well. However, more significant damage will require that the entire windshield be replaced.

DID YOU KNOW? Charcoal grills can remain hot for hours, even long after the flames have extinguished. As a result, charcoal grill users should recognize that their jobs are not done once the burgers, hot dogs and other foods have been removed from the grill. To safeguard against fires resulting from still-hot charcoal grills, grillmasters should avoid moving the grill while the coals are still burning hot. In addition, avoid placing any flammable objects close to the grill while the coals are cooling down. Potentially combustible items should also be kept far away from charcoal grills, ideally in locations where gusts of wind cannot blow them toward the grill. Charcoal grill owners can also inspect the metal grates on their grills to make sure they are not rusted. Damaged or rusted grates can make it possible for items to fall down onto surfaces below the grate, increasing the risk of fire. Another way for charcoal grill users to make using their grills more safe is to avoid the use of starter fluid or other igniters once the coals have been ignited. Doing so only increases the risk of fire or accident and is unlikely to help the coals maintain a strong flame that lasts long enough to cook foods quickly.

MOST POPULAR ETHNIC CUISINES ACROSS THE COUNTRY What constitutes “ethnic” food differs from person to person. Someone of Italian descent may dine regularly on garlic-infused pasta dishes, while a person from another area of the world may find such foods exotic. In the cultural melting pot of North America, various cuisines representing countries that span the globe are within arm’s length for many people. According to Technomic, a Chicago-based research firm, 77 percent of Americans enjoy ethnic foods while dining out once a month. Around 38 percent order ethnic food weekly. In addition, many more people prepare ethnic cuisine at home. A growing interest in ethnic foods is fueled by young people. Technomic notes that millennials are more apt to want to try various cuisines and then incorporate them into their regular dining experiences. The National Restaurant Association found that 60 percent of people are likely to “tie their favorite ethnic food to their family history.” Interest in ethnic foods tends to be highest in urban areas where restaurants and ingredients may be more readily available. When it comes to the top ethnic cuisines enjoyed throughout the states or provinces and territories, Chinese, Mexican and Italian rally for the top spots on diners’ plates. While the NRA has Italian cuisine as earning topbilling, Technomic’s list says that Chinese food, at 76 percent, followed by Mexican food (74 percent) and Italian (71 percent) comprise the biggest ethnic draws. Japanese or sushi comes in a distant fourth at 32 percent in the United States. The statistics portal Statista indicates that, as of January 2015, Chinese, American and Italian foods are quite popular in Canada. However, the percentage of people who cook these foods as opposed to eating them out at a restaurant varies. Chinese food is most widely enjoyed in a restaurant setting, while Italian food is frequently whipped up at home. As immigration tides change, ethnic cuisine may change with them. However, interest in experiencing ethnic dining is likely to remain consistent.

eroes can come in many different forms. One is that of those who sacrifice and work hard for the betterment of their community. The Field of Thanks has been made to honor and memorialize those individuals.

The Field of Thanks took place from June 6th to June 13th, on the front lawn of St. James Episcopal Church in Batavia. The week-long event featured 70 American flags that were displayed to honor essential workers, first responders, and military veterans in the community. One of the flags displayed was bought by a patron to honor “News Media Professionals,” specifically WBTA, The Batavia Daily News, The Batavia, and your Genesee Valley Penny Saver. Dawn Mark is one of the coordinators of the event, and she shares an in-depth look on the event and why “News Media Professionals” were included. “This is the first time we have hosted a Field of Thanks, so these are all new heroes,” explains Mark, not that Phyllis Draycott conceived the project with the desire to bring the community together after a difficult 15 months. “There are 74 community members from all walks of life who were chosen by their neighbors for reasons ranging from appreciation for the simple, poignant love of a mother to heralding the bravery of one of the most dangerous of Army positions: the cavalry scout. Plaques reflect the grieving for creative lives cut short by COVID and by contrast, feelings of joy and victory felt by COVID survivors. The first responders and medical staff who are being honored worked many extra shifts to save lives and to keep our community safe and ticking along as normally as possible. Half of the plaques are military, ranging from WWI through those in active service. More than on Memorial Day or on Veterans Day, these plaques tell a bit more about the men and women behind the tribute. The pictures look like something out of a Hollywood movie. The bottom line is that there is a whole lot of love and pride reflected on this lawn, and that is the great unifier everyone involved has in common.” Mark also goes on to explain the circumstances leading to a patron purchasing a flag for multiple media outlets. “Each branch of the community media has its niche, and they are all vital,” she said. “The newspaper puts it in black and white in something you can tangibly hold, especially if you don’t have a computer and something as seemingly insignificant as the comics and puzzle section became something positive to look forward to every day.” Mark also praises online media for being a fast and accurate source of what is happening in “the now,” as well as the stability and comfort of voice that characterizes the daily routine of radio. “The Genesee Valley Penny Saver continued to provide the community a voice during the Pandemic. Each edition portrayed the struggle of businesses to survive, a hope of jobs to be filled, and a Hometown Happenings section that assured everyone of the resilience of the community to find creative ways to proceed with life in spite of restriction,” Mark noted. “Each media team was working together for the good of the community.” Discussing why she believes having a flag for the local media to be important, Mark explains, “The patron who recognized the News media appreciates the exhaustive efforts of anyone in the journalistic profession to obtain truthful and current information during this Pandemic in spite of all the political rhetoric. The ‘News’ was often a person’s only contact to the outside world, the only company for people locked in their homes. People glued themselves to these reports in hope that their county was faring better than the week before, that another local business didn’t close, that they didn’t see their best friend in the obituaries. The news became an obsession, and it was the media’s responsibility to ‘deliver,’ often at considerable risk to themselves.” The Field of Thanks was successful in the community, with many people coming to attend the closing ceremony at which every hero was recognized and given their flag and plaque. It was a refreshing site to see considering what the community had been through over the past year. Before, people could not gather and spend time with one another; now they were able come together and honor the heroes among them. Mark concluded by saying, “The Field of Thanks is giving everyone the opportunity to voice their many interesting reasons for their own definition of thankfulness. It is community thanking community.”

Gary Sheard’s Septic Service NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Add a cinnamon stick or softener sheet to your vacuum bag when you change it. As you clean, you will distribute the good smell throughout your home. * There’s been a lot of talk at my house about kitchen gadgets that do double duty, especially since I have made whipped cream for the first time -- in my coffeemaker! I have a French press that I rarely use, until now. Add heavy whipping cream and a bit of sugar to the pot, and use the screen to whip the cream by rapidly pumping it up and down. Magic! -- JoAnn * “To save money on electricity costs, hang jeans and other heavy clothing to dry first. White or light towels and garments especially love the sun. When they’re mostly dry, pop in the dryer to fluff. * “I love to eat pancakes, but I don’t have time to make them every morning. I make a very large batch on Sundays and reheat them through the week. In order to recreate that fresh-from-the-pan crisp (which you don’t get if you microwave them), I put them in my toaster.” -- P.E. in Ohio * “I use an extra coffeepot to brew a pot of hot water. I use the water for both tea and instant oatmeal packets in the morning.” -- M.S. in Nevada * “Before I go to the beach, I freeze an ice-cube tray full of lemonade. Then, we use the cubes in our travel cups. It keeps the lemonade cool, and as it melts (which tends to be quickly), it doesn’t water down the drink.” -- K.H. in South Carolina

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * New Yorkers went through a bizarre phase of wearing chameleons as living ornaments in 1894. They were fastened to cushions, scarves and women’s bodices with tiny chains and collars as little “jeweled playthings,” but thankfully the trend was shut down by the SPCA, which banned their sale -- though not until over 10,000 of the creatures were already running loose in the city.

The program runs for 16 weeks and culminates in a celebration of their accomplishments on October 14, 2021. Included in the program are opportunities for professional development, networking, and developing skills as a leadership volunteer. “Together with our community we are transforming cystic fibrosis from a deadly childhood disease to the best story in medicine,” said Patty Schwarzweller, AED of the WNY Chapter. When the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation was first founded, children with CF typically did not live long enough to attend elementary school. Today, people with CF are achieving milestones like going to college and starting families of their own. We are making incredible progress, but we can’t do it alone. We invite everyone in the Rochester community to help us make “CF” stand not for cystic fibrosis, but for “Cure Found”.

About the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation is the world’s leader in the search for a cure for cystic fibrosis. The Foundation funds more CF research than any other organization, and nearly every CF drug available today was made possible because of Foundation support. Based in Bethesda, MD, the Foundation also supports and accredits a national care center network that has been recognized by the National Institutes of Health as a model of care for a chronic disease. The CF Foundation is a donor-supported nonprofit organization. For more information, please go to www.CFF.org.

C. Diff Tricky to Treat, But Rarely Terminal

Discover the Human Touch in Hearing Technology

---

DEAR DR. ROACH: In December, I developed an abscess in my jaw from food getting caught in my tooth. I went to see a local dentist who prescribed clindamycin and metronidazole. I came down with a case of C. difficile. I have since found evidence that multiple antibiotics and clindamycin are causes of C. diff. I am getting mixed messages about my prognosis. Some medical people are telling me it’s not a big deal and to just wash my hands a lot. My primary physician, however, gave me the impression that this is basically a terminal diagnosis. She told me how sorry she was and that I had been a very healthy person but am not any longer. She told me that it will most likely recur, and every time it does it will be more difficult to treat until I become antibiotic resistant, and that people die from it. She also told me that she would set me up for the standard yearly appointment, but that I should come see her whenever I need to. I am paranoid about what my future holds and what, if anything, I can do. I would like your opinion of this situation. Any guidance you can give me would be greatly appreciated. -- Anon. ANSWER: Clostridium difficile (“C. diff”) infections are common but can be serious. As you correctly note, many antibiotics are associated with the acquisition of symptomatic C. diff infections, and although clindamycin is the best known, other antibiotics (quinolones, amoxicillin and related penicillins) are actually more common. The antibiotics kill off large numbers of healthy bacteria, allowing the unhealthy C. diff to take over. The cardinal symptom of C. diff is watery diarrhea, at least three loose stools in 24 hours. Abdominal pain and cramping, nausea and poor appetite are common. Fever is less common. Symptoms can start during antibiotic treatment or up to a month after completing antibiotics. Treatment is stopping the antibiotic if possible and if still being given. Antibiotic treatment against C. diff is with the newer drug fidaxomicin or with oral vancomycin; unfortunately, fidaxomicin is ridiculously expensive -- a course of fidaxomicin is $3,000 via goodrx.com in the U.S. at the time of writing. A course of oral vancomycin costs much less, often less than $200 through the same website. If neither of these is available, metronidazole is a less-expensive alternative. Fidaxomicin has the lowest risk of recurrence of the infection, and many experts will reserve it for a person who has recurred after oral vancomycin. For the unusual person who continues to recur after antibiotic treatment, fecal microbiota transplants (processed from stool of healthy donors) have been safe and effective. I am disturbed that you got the impression that C. diff is a terminal diagnosis. Although in rare cases, hospitalized patients can get so sick that they can die from C. diff, this would be very unusual in less severe disease, as in someone who is able to go home from the hospital. Handwashing is necessary to reduce infection to others. Avoiding drugs like Prilosec that suppress acid can help prevent recurrences. Finally, probiotics (live healthy bacteria) may be of use in reducing infection and recurrence. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. DID YOU KNOW? Men and women often make an effort to lose weight before special events such as weddings or vacations. While many people do so in healthy ways, others take their weight loss efforts to the extreme. For example, many brides-to-be aspire to shed excess weight before their weddings so they can look as slim as possibly in their wedding gowns. The New York Times even reported in 2012 on a bride who spent eight days on a feeding tube to strictly limit calories so she could fit into her wedding dress. Such efforts are dangerous and could put individuals’ long-term health in serious jeopardy. Healthy weight loss for any occasion requires a long lead time, so that individuals can safely shed between one and two pounds per week with a healthy mix of diet and exercise, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Trimming between 500 and 1,000 calories per day from their diets can help individuals lose weight safely.

WISDOM TOOTH REMOVAL Having wisdom teeth removed almost seems to be a rite of passage, but it is not always necessary. For some people, this third set of molars arrives in the back of the mouth healthy and with plenty of space to grow. However, wisdom teeth sometimes do not have enough room to grow properly, which can cause crowding, pushing the other teeth out of place. For some patients, the third molars grow in crooked, which can lead to cysts, tumors, and gum disease. In most cases, a dental visit will expose any potential problems with the development of wisdom teeth and they can be removed before they cause any issues or symptoms.

Whether it involves wisdom teeth, implants, cosmetic work, simple fillings, or complex restorations, any program we suggest for your dental health will be thoroughly discussed with you before we begin. When you are looking for state-of-the-art, personalized dentistry from people who really care, welcome to BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL. Our dental team works smoothly and efficiently together, devoted to making your dental experience comfortable, as well as enhancing. Call us at 585.343.4246 for an appointment at 6 Batavia City Centre.

P.S. Wisdom teeth are usually removed in a patient’s late teens because the tooth roots have not fully formed and they are easier to extract.

MICROCEPHALY BROUGHT INTO THE LIMELIGHT Conception and childbirth are miracles of life. While parents experience many joys during pregnancy and delivery, they must discuss potentially uncomfortable conversations that need to be addressed. This includes the potential that babies will born with birth defects. Over the last year, microcephaly, a rare but serious disability, has garnered substantial attention. Microcephaly is a neurological condition in which an infant’s head is significantly smaller than the heads of other children of the same age and sex, advises The Mayo Clinic. The condition is typically the result of the brain developing abnormally in the womb or not growing as it is supposed to after birth. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says microcephaly can be an isolated condition, or it can occur in combination with other major birth defects. Depending on the severity of the condition, children with microcephaly can face any number of symptoms. According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, symptoms of microcephaly include impaired cognitive development, delayed motor functions, dwarfism, seizures, difficulties with balance, and other neurological abnormalities. Although microcephaly is rare, according to the National Birth Defects Prevention Network, it may become more common. That’s because microcephaly has been linked to mothers who were exposed to the Zika virus while pregnant. Exposure to in utero substance abuse, as well as genetic or chromosomal issues, also can lead to microcephaly. Dr. Nassim Zecavati, an assistant professor of pediatrics and neurology at the Georgetown University School of Medicine, says essentially anything that slows down brain growth in the womb or causes a severe deprivation of oxygen and blood flow before, during or after delivery can be problematic. Unfortunately, no treatment exists to return a child’s head and brain to normal size. Instead, treatment focuses on reducing the impact associated with neurological disabilities and subsequent physical disabilities. Early childhood intervention programs that include speech, physical and occupational therapy may be part of a child’s course of treatment. Certain medications can be prescribed to help with seizures or hyperactivity. Thanks to its link to the Zika virus, microcephaly has garnered considerable attention over the last year-plus. Though still rare, microcephaly is something expecting parents and couples planning to have children should familiarize themselves with.

CONSERVE WATER WHEN TEMPERATURES RISE Spring and summer are synonymous with increased hours of sunlight, warm temperatures and, oftentimes, an increased reliance on water to feed recreational pursuits and lawn and garden needs. The Water Information Program states that 3.9 trillion gallons of water are consumed in the United States each month and the average person uses 176 gallons of water per day. Water conservation may be essential when the risk for weather-related drought looms. Practicing year-round conservation efforts can help ensure smart usage of local watersheds, lakes and reservoirs and help maintain these water sources for years to come. It also helps the average person reduce his or her carbon footprint while saving people a little money along the way.

Even if there are no visible signs of damage, homeowners whose roofs have some years under their belt may want to consider replacing them. HOMETOWN PHOTOS Yard salers beware! So much work goes into setting up a yard/garage sale. Ours was last Friday & Saturday in [local town]. Sales were very slow, and on Saturday, we had a thief visit us. When picking up, we noticed a $10 item was missing. Someone was low enough to steal it. It must have been someone without a conscience. Thanks a lot! So everybody, watch all the people you let into your sale. Like I said, sales were very slow, and it takes so much work to put things out and pack things up afterwards only to have someone do this, too.

S E V RA St. Martin's Sale Thank you to everyone who supported the St. Martin Lutheran Annual Garage Sale, either through your donations or purchases. Proceeds go to support underprivileged children in our area. Unexpected generosity This past week, I ran into Penfield Wegmans to pick up a few things we needed for Dad's Day brunch. When I went to check out, I couldn’t find my wallet. I carry a huge purse which makes finding things a challenge. While I was still searching, a woman came up out of the blue and offered to pay for my groceries. I thanked her for her generosity. I am a firm believer in paying it forward which I will do in some fashion! Clean up thanks! To all those - Village Crew, Law Enforcement, Fire Department, Utility Crews & more - who helped clean up the village and restore power to Avon after the storm on Monday: thank you! Your hard work is very much appreciated! Play ball! It was great to have Avon Little League back this year! Thank you to all of the parents who made it possible, taking care of everything from organizing to coaching!

True Colors Flying the American Flag means freedom for all Americans. Freedom means freedom of choice, freedom to live your life as the best you can, freedom to let other people live their lives regardless of color. Too many times lately, people are only looking at the color of someone’s skin but not what is in their heart. The color of a person’s skin does not define the kind of person they are. To those who only look at skin color: shame on you! Social Security Theft From every paycheck since I was 15, the state of NY has taken out taxes and social security. For 40 years, I have been paying Social Security and have been receiving an annual letter detailing what my Social Security benefit will be based on what I earned and paid into it. I could not opt out of it and use that money for the here and now. So, it is my Social Security. It was established by FDR in 1935 to give the working class some financial security as they reached retirement age. It’s not for the politicians to spend or for the offended-by-everything generation to spend. It’s mine. It’s your parents’ and your grandparents’, not yours to denounce as not our right to recieve. If you want it abolished, go ahead and lobby for its end, but don’t you dare tell us 50+ individuals that we are causing the deficit. We paid into it and deserve what we were told was coming to us. What you are suggesting is the equivalent of stealing, and you should be ashamed of yourself.

Thank you, neighbors! Thank you to all our neighbors for helping us pick up our fallen tree limbs and to the people who stopped to see if we were okay! We live in such a great community!

DEAR LARRY: I experienced similar nightly fireworks throughout the pandemic. There are many theories as to why fireworks were so popular, but I prefer to go with the most obvious: Some people had little else to do, and no regard for their neighbors. My pets are not too fazed by the occasional crackle of firecrackers, which still goes on here even though the pandemic restrictions are mostly lifted. But some of our neighbors had much bigger fireworks and enjoyed setting them off around midnight or later, with no warning. My pets came flying into the bedroom when these were set off. As a pet owner, it’s frustrating to see our companions suffer from someone else’s carelessness. Even worse, authorities haven’t seemed interested in enforcing noise or fireworks regulations. As we head into the Fourth of July weekend, plan ahead to make things easier for your pets. Create a safe space for your dogs to go to when fireworks go off. Some dogs absolutely need this and can’t be comforted by a hug or treats. A friend of mine created a little den in the corner of her mudroom using scrap plywood, putting bedding and old clothes inside so her giant mutt “Ollie” can hide from loud noises. Talk to your dogs’ vet as well about medication to keep them calmer through the holiday, which may help them better deal with the trauma caused by fireworks. SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Staying Hydrated in Summer Heat If there is any mantra we need to repeat this summer it’s this one: drink more liquids. A university study revealed that 80% of heat-related deaths were in people over the age of 60. We need to do everything we can to avoid dehydration when the weather is hot. As we age, many of us don’t have the same body temperature regulation. Poor circulation and lack of thirst can make us vulnerable to the effects of heat. Of those, lack of thirst is the easiest to address, and drinking more water doesn’t need to be a chore. Find out from your doctor just how many ounces you need to drink in a day. Some medications, such as diuretics, might change how your body reacts to heat and dehydration. Ask whether you need an electrolyte-replacement drink for added potassium and sodium. By the numbers: Buy several smaller water bottles and fill with water as many as you need each day to reach the required number of ounces. Keep them on the kitchen counter, where you’ll see them. Keep oranges, strawberries and watermelons handy, or make your own fruit popsicles. Keep an eye on the TV news and weather. Know what temperatures and humidity are expected during the day, especially early afternoon. If you walk for exercise, try to go in the morning. Make a few calls and find out about any cooling stations near you, or air-conditioned spaces such as a mall, if you don’t have air conditioning at home. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

The great secret that all old people share is that you really haven’t changed in seventy or eighty years. Your body changes, but you don’t change at all. And that, of course, causes great confusion. ~ Doris Lessing

“No one is more unhappy than he who never had bad luck; he could never test himself...” ~ Seneca

A Celebration of Life Will be held at the Caledonia Country Club

Wednesday, July 7th from 4PM-7PM

STEPS INVOLVED WITH ESTATE PLANNING Medical directives. In addition to a will, estate planning includes your wishes if you become incapacitated or suffer from a serious medical condition that precludes you from making decisions about your care and finances. Spouses can be named to make important health decisions, but you may want to indicate other information, such as life support measures or organ donation, as well. If you have strong opinions on treatment, medical directives and living wills are a necessity.

Peter Gozelski June 15, 2021

We may pity the poor soul who has consistent bad luck but he has one advantage over his fellows who have had nothing but good fortune… he knows that he can survive the worst that fortune has in store for him. A Roman philosopher of the first century, Seneca recognized this seeming paradox. The person upon whom fortune continually smiles is made unhappy by uncertainty. Never having been tested, he wonders how he would manage if his good luck changed to bad. It may help to keep this in mind when we experience a run of bad luck. We have no “standard” service. Each family we serve has unique needs and we tailor our service to meet these. Our best references are from the families we have served.

Clifton, New York 14428

Dear Community Members, The Clifton Fire Department has made the difficult decision to cancel our 2021 Parade and Carnival scheduled for August 6th and 7th. Since 1935 this annual event has been important to our community and members. This year we are celebrating our 86th year of service to our district and surrounding neighbors. Even with the New York State guideline changes and the pandemic slowly subsiding, our priority continues to be the health and safety of our members and loyal supporters. Our annual carnival is our largest fundraising event. Therefore, we will feel the loss of this income from our annual budget. We are and will continue to look for other possible fundraising events. The Clifton Fire Department annual fund drive letter will be sent out to our fire district residents in the coming weeks. If you are not a district resident and would like to make a tax deductible donation, you can mail a check payable to the Clifton Fire Department Inc., 53 Wheatland Center Rd., Clifton, NY 14428. Thank you all in advance for your continued support. Please be assured that in the event of an emergency, we will be there. Stay safe and healthy. We look forward to seeing you at next year’s carnival when we can gather with family and friends to continue making great memories. Sincerely, The Members of the Clifton Fire Department and Ladies Auxiliary

GREAT WEDDING GIFT IDEAS Airline miles: Though it might be unconventional, gifting airline miles to the happy couple may save them hundreds of dollars. Men and women with ample airline miles should determine if their agreement allows them to transfer those miles to a loved one. If so, transferring the miles won’t cost the person doing the gifting any money out of pocket, but it can save couples substantial amounts of money on their next trip, including their honeymoon if they have yet to book one.

Simplify vacations and savor the fun Keep your itinerary flexible. Scheduling right down to the minute can remove the fun of the trip. Leave opportunities to just sit and enjoy your surroundings. Perhaps other members of the family or traveling party have their own ideas for entertainment. A rigid timeline can make the vacation seem more like a commitment rather than an opportunity to let loose and stop watching the clock. Page 31

IMPROVE ALERTNESS DURING THE WORKDAY Avoid caffeine in the late afternoon. Some professionals rely on caffeinated beverages such as coffee or energy drinks to combat afternoon drowsiness. While that afternoon caffeine fix might provide an immediate, if temporary, jolt of energy, it might also affect a person’s energy levels the following day. A 2013 study published in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine found that caffeine consumed as early as six hours before bedtime can significantly disrupt sleep. Professionals who reach for a cup of coffee in the late afternoon might get a sudden boost of energy, but their energy levels the following day might be lower due to a poor night’s sleep. Retirement can seem like it will never come for young professionals. But time can be a sieve, and retirement age can arrive in the blink of an eye. Young adults who have not planned accordingly for retirement can find themselves in financial straits at a point in their lives when they want to kick back and enjoy themselves. Financial experts from Money, CNN and The Motley Fool advise that financially solvent people should begin saving aggressively for their retirements early on. Ideally people should start saving in their 20s when they first leave school and begin their careers. The sooner one saves, the more time money has to grow. Vanguard says that the person who saves $4,500 per year over a career spanning 45 years can reach a goal of having more than $1 million in savings by the time he or she retires. Compounding interest and investment matches from employers can further secure professionals’ financial futures.

Experience a plus. Valid driver’s license a must. 401K, health care package.
