DID YOU KNOW? According to the American Osteopathic Association, one in five teenagers will now experience some form of hearing loss. That rate is roughly 30 percent higher than it was 20 years ago. Though various factors have contributed to that increase, the AOA notes that many experts believe an increased use of headphones among teenagers is partly to blame. Listening to headphones at high volumes for extended periods of time can lead to lifelong hearing loss for children and teens. Parents can encourage children and teenagers to listen to music at reasonable levels when using their headphones, and one effective way to control volume without sacrificing sound is to use over-the-ear headphones instead of earbuds. The Cleveland Clinic notes that over-theear headphones are generally more effective than earbuds at cancelling outside noise. That allows over-the-ear headphone users to listen to music at lower volumes, which can significantly reduce their risk for noise-induced hearing loss.

DID YOU KNOW? The demand for qualified, talented nurses figures to grow in the years to come. According to the U.S. Bureau
NOW HERE’S A TIP
of Labor Statistics, more than half a million nurses are expected to retire by 2022. Couple that with an existing nursing shortage, and the BLS projects a need for 1.1 million registered nurses in the near future. A shortage also figures to affect Canada, where the Canadian Nurses Association recently estimated that the country would be forced to confront a nursing shortage of roughly 60,000 nurses by 2022. Various factors are contributing to the nursing shortage in both countries, including an increasingly large aging population that will require more and more nurses to meet its health care needs. In the United States, the Affordable Care Act, which was passed in 2010, increased access to health care for millions of people across the country, thereby creating a greater need for nurses and other health care professionals. In addition, a greater emphasis on preventive care in many countries across the globe figures to compel more people to visit their physicians even when they’re otherwise feeling healthy. As more people prioritize preventive care, the need for more nurses will likely increase.

Hello, my name is . I’m a 3 year old Maltese and I only weigh 10 pounds. I love to wear whatever my Mom picks out for me. I’m very particular about my toys but I like using them to bait my friend into playing. My favorite thing to do is sit in my parents laps whether they are working, exercising, or just hanging out. Nothing stops me from trying to lay on them. I was born to snuggle.
Pet’s First Visit to the Veterinarian DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’m planning to adopt a cat soon. This is my first pet, and I’m looking forward to caring for it. The local shelter gave me a few instructions to follow, pre-adoption, including making an appointment for a veterinary checkup. Is there anything I should know about my cat’s first vet visit? -- Kara L., Buffalo, N.Y.

DEAR KARA: Congratulations on deciding to accept a cat into your life! It will be a rewarding experience. I’m also glad that you’re doing your homework ahead of time to give your cat the best start on a new life. Here are a few tips that will help with your first veterinary visit: * Research local clinics ahead of time. Is there one that specializes in cats? * Purchase a cat carrier that best fits your cat (in terms of size, not decor). This will make transporting the cat from the shelter and to and from the vet much easier and safer. * Keep all paperwork from the shelter in a folder and bring it with you. * You should be able to be present during the exam. It’s a great time to ask questions about caring for your cat. Be ready to take notes. * Listen to the vet as he or she gives you information about your cat’s general health. Vets or their assistants often talk to you throughout the process, telling you what they’re checking for and the result. * Follow the vet’s instructions. If a follow-up visit or more tests are needed, make sure you do it. Write down special instructions like how much and what type of food to feed your cat, or instructions on giving medication. And don’t be afraid to ask for clarification if you don’t understand something.

DID YOU KNOW? Modern cars are technological marvels, and it turns out drivers may value tech over all else, including their choice of automaker. A 2017 study from Autotrader asked 1,000 participants an assortment of questions about technology and car buying. Roughly 60 percent of millennial car shoppers and more than 40 percent of baby boomers indicated they would switch vehicle brands just to get the technology features they want. Drivers are even willing to pay extra for their preferred tech. The Autotrader study found that the average shopper would pay an extra $2,276 to get the right tech features. SIGNS OF WINTER LAWN DAMAGE Wilted grass: Many things can cause grass to wilt over the course of winter, so homeowners may have to put on their sleuth’s cap to determine why grass that was healthy as recently as late fall is now wilted as the spring bloom begins. Grass that’s adjacent to walkways and driveways might have wilted due to the application of deicing solutions. Such products can prevent the formation of ice on driveways and walkways. However, when they’re tracked onto the grass by people or animals or blown there by winter winds, grass can wilt. A deep watering in spring can flush any lingering solution from the lawn. In future winters, homeowners can be as careful as possible when applying de-icing solutions, making a concerted effort to avoid spreading any onto the grass and limited applications to areas of the driveway and walkways that are not close to the grass.

PLUMBING
FACTORS TO CONSIDER BEFORE CONVERTING AN ATTIC Access: Access is another aspect that must adhere to local safety guidelines. Many attics are accessible only through pulldown ladders, but that will have to change if homeowners repurpose their attic spaces. A staircase that complies with local laws will need to be installed, and contractors can work with homeowners to build that and estimate the cost. Homeowners who simply want to put desks in their attics without going with full-fledged conversions are urged to adhere to local access requirements anyway, as they’re intended to ensure residents can safely escape attics in the case of a fire or another emergency.

Heating, ROBLEE Plumbing, & Cooling HOW TO CONSERVE WATER AT HOME Conservation is an essential component of an eco-friendly lifestyle. Conserving the planet’s natural resources can have a profound impact on the planet, and conserving at home is a great way for men and women to get the ball rolling on their conservation efforts. One of the most effective ways to conserve at home is to reduce water consumption. Few people give much thought to how much water they consume at home, as water bills tend to be considerably lower than other utilities like energy and phone. But even if efforts to conserve water at home may not make a dramatic impact on monthly utility bills, many measures can go a long way toward preserving one of the planet’s most precious resources. One tool we can utilize is traps as a deterrent. The first one is to use burlap folded over and secured to the
tree to create an open suitcase or upsidedown V with the burlap. The caterpillars climb up the tree into the V suitcase and stop because they typically are not smart enough to crawl down the V and up again on the outside. We can then monitor and dispose of any found caterpillars in the trap. Another method is to use duct tape and to trap the caterpillars. You use the
tape to create a wide band around the tree and then create the V with the sticky side of the tape exposed so the caterpillars become stuck.

LeRoy’s Natasha Sutherland of Stein Farms Shares her Dairy Farming Passion BY AMANDA K. DUDEK
J
une is Dairy Month, and no one is more aware of this than LeRoy dairy farm owner, Natasha Sutherland. Natasha’s family, the Steins, have been dairy farmers in Genesee County since in the 1950s and are still going strong. Filled with both challenges and incredible advancements, dairy farming continues to be Natasha’s passion. “Stein Farms, LLC is a third-generation dairy farm founded by my grandparents in 1956,” said Natasha. “My dad is one of 42 first cousins, so there are many Stein family farms in the area.” Having a lot of family around is one of the things Natasha most appreciates about working on the family farm. “I love that I have the gift of working with my family every day, although we all go to our separate homes at night,” she said. “I get to see my mom, dad, uncle, cousin, and brother often. My grandmother still lives a quarter mile from the farm, and I see her almost every day. That family connection is a gift.” In fact, 98% of dairy farms are family owned according to the American Dairy Association North East. “There is no such thing as a factory farm,” she stated. “Everyone’s terrain and management are different. Every cow is an individual and needs to be treated as such.” Stein Farms, LLC, a family business with four partners in ownership and 18 staff, continues the longstanding Stein tradition of self-reliance. “We raise all our own forages and do some custom harvesting for neighbor properties,” explained Natasha. “We have such a strong can-do attitude that we also ran our own steel fabrication business, RS Fabrication, for almost 30 years.” Natasha also enjoys life on the farm where she is the “Herd Mama.” “I spend all day with my cows. That is my joy for absolute sure!” she said, adding that Stein Farms currently boasts 1,000 mature cows as well as 800 young cows. “I make sure the cows are healthy. I have a ‘special needs’ group, as well. One cow in the group is a special needs girl who gets bullied all day if she is out with the other cows, so she stays pretty close to me. Knowing that I made a difference in their life, that they are happy and healthy, that reward is so worth it.” Incredible developments in technology are making this individually attentive care even more possible. “There is a new device that is like a Fitbit for a cow,” explained Natasha. “It is swallowed, but not passed, by the cow, and it hangs around in her stomach, giving us very accurate information about many things including her temperature, how many steps she takes, how many times she chews her cud (ruminates), and more. Right away, I receive an alert if something is not right with a cow or a whole pen of cows. This tech shows us the individual’s needs even though they live in a herd setting.” “It is amazing to see where big tech is going with Ag,” Natasha continued. “They are helping us realize new ways we can use technology.”
agricultural community as well as milk prices which are determined federally. Nevertheless, she feels local farmers are essential to their communities. “Every dollar we earn, we triple out into our community,” said Award-winning Stein Farms, LLC Natasha. “We enable this beautiful green landscape to flourish, but we don’t just exist here, we spend here. The economic impact we have is epic.” She encourages neighbors to think of the scent of manure, not as an odor, but as the smell of sustainability. “What we earn goes right back out again into some commodity we purchase locally like diesel, fertilizer, gloves, and tractors. We are the breadbasket of New York, and milk is one of the most locally sourced foods in our entire nation. When you drink milk from here, it hasn’t traveled more than two days from farm to table.” It is, in part, in the flexibility and diversity of dairy products that Natasha sees its place in the future. “A boom is coming to our population,” she said. “We are the ones who are going to feed the world. Milk protein is easy to transport anywhere in dried form, and we are becoming more efficient at producing it.” In spite of the difficulties facing local dairy farmers, Natasha says dairy “Dairy is here is here to stay, thanks in no small part to stay!” to local dairy processors who create - Natasha Sutherland products like cheese and yogurt. “We thrive on a challenge,” she said. “We will be here in spite of these things. We will find a way to be here. Western New York is beautifully filled with Right to Farm communities, and we appreciate our neighbors for that courtesy and support.” Want to support your local farm families? Natasha says it’s as simple as buying a gallon of milk and supporting your local farmers market. In fact, as the weather warms, ice cream sounds just perfect! Enjoy this article? STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * In early 2015, Mattel released Hello Barbie, an interactive talking doll that didn’t just repeat preprogrammed phrases, but could actually hold a twoway conversation. The doll raised major concerns over privacy, however, since the discussions between it and child owners were recorded and sent to thirdparty vendors. Goodbye, Barbie!

STATISTICS SHOW JUST HOW BIG SMALL BUSINESS IS Small businesses have such a big impact on their communities, and the world at large, that it might be time to reconsider refering to them as “small.” According to the World Bank, small businesses have a major impact on the world economy, especially in emerging countries. In such nations, small and medium enterprises contribute up to 60 percent of total employment and up to 40 percent of national income. Small businesses figure to frame their economies in emerging countries in the coming decades, and they’re already doing so in developed nations, such as the United States and Canada.

Statistics Brain reports that 93 percent of Americans eat at least one piece of pizza per month. Five billion pizzas are sold worldwide each year, and the United States accounts for three billion of those pizzas. The average person will eat 46 slices of pizza each year. The world can thank Raffaele Esposito for creating the first pizza that resembled the pizza the world knows today. Esposito created the pizza for Italy’s Queen Margherita when she visited Naples in 1889. The crust was garnished with tomatoes, mozzarella and basil to represent the national colors of Italy: red, white and green.

A night out on the town means different things to many people. Taking in a movie or dining at a favorite restaurant make great nights out for many people. But men and women looking to stray from the norm are increasingly combining seemingly unrelated activities for a night out that is both social and creatively rewarding. “Paint-and-sip” or “paint-and-snack” businesses have grown increasingly popular in recent years. The premise is quite simple. Patrons reserve a spot (and canvas) and work their way through a painting, all the while conversing with friends and enjoying a spirited beverage or two along the way. Painting events have helped many men and women tap into their inner artist and make a few new friends along the way. The goal of such events is to have fun and teach adults about painting, and many men and women find the relaxed atmosphere encourages them to express their individuality and artistry. Paint-and-sip events come in various styles. One of the more popular scenarios has people working at an established painting studio, which provides the necessary artistic equipment while guests provide their own drinks and appetizers. Some bars and restaurants also host social painting evenings. Easels and canvasses may be brought into a venue, where participants can paint as they relax with a drink. Food and beverage specials may be part of the package price, or guests may buy items a la carte. Painting events can be organized for private parties, and such parties may take place at private residences or at restaurants or bars. Painting parties have begun to replace more traditional party themes. Some find such parties an entertaining alternative to traditional bachelor or bachelorette parties, while others host birthday parties or baby showers with painting themes. Painting parties also can be a fun way to get friends together for a girls’ or guys’ night out. In addition to a fun night out, participants get to take home their own work of art, which can be gifted or displayed for years to come. To find a painting party by you, simply inquire about companies such as Paint Nite, Paint Along or Pinot’s Palette. Prospective Picassos also can inquire with local restaurant or bars if they will be hosting upcoming painting events or even encourage such establishments to do so if no they do not have any events on their schedules.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
CPAP Machine Can Help With Sleep Apnea ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: How are sleep apnea, sighing and heart failure related? Recently, I was told that I have severe sleep apnea and that I must use a CPAP machine. I have noticed that during the day I frequently take a spontaneous deep breath. Is that sleep apnea while awake? I have coronary heart disease and have three stents. Will the CPAP machine help me in any way? -- A.P. ANSWER: It’s complicated. By far, the most common type of sleep apnea is obstructive sleep apnea. This happens in people who are overweight, or in people whose neck anatomy predisposes them to the condition. During sleep, the upper airway collapses, preventing proper inspiration. This can be noticed by a sleep partner as choking, gasping or just not breathing for a prolonged time. The person eventually will wake up enough, due to lack of oxygen, to be able to take in a good breath, but will then fall back asleep. The process may happen hundreds of times a night, with the person often unaware. Sleepiness during the day (from never sleeping properly at night) and snoring are the most common symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea. CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure), which uses high pressure to keep the airway open, is the most common initial treatment for obstructive sleep apnea. In severe sleep apnea, the oxygen level in the blood can be so low for so long that the heart and lungs can be damaged, eventually leading to a type of heart failure of the right side of the heart. However, the situation is even more complex. People who have other kinds of heart failure, such as from repeated heart attacks, can develop the less common form of sleep apnea, central sleep apnea. Although this also may be treated by CPAP, it is critical to treat the underlying heart failure as well. Your doctor can tell you whether you have central or obstructive sleep apnea. Spontaneous deep breaths, sighs, are a part of normal human physiology. Sighs have several purposes, but the most important is to help keep the lungs properly expanded. Sighs might be more common in people with heart failure, but I do not know of any correlation with sleep apnea. ***
Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2022 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

We Care About
Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy
TOOTH ENAMEL EROSION Did you know that tooth enamel is the hardest tissue in the body? Enamel is the thin, outer coating on your teeth, which helps protect them from daily use, bacteria, and chemicals. However, as tough as enamel is, it can still erode, chip, and crack. Enamel is not made from living cells, so it cannot regenerate itself once it’s damaged. Enamel erosion occurs when a person consumes too many acidic foods and drinks or eats starchy foods that convert to acids after consumption. The best ways to protect enamel is to limit acidic drinks, foods, and starches; rinse your mouth with plain water after eating or drinking acidic or starchy foods; and receive regular cleanings from a dental professional.
Has tooth enamel erosion taken a toll on your teeth, causing them to be yellowed and overly sensitive? If you’re not happy with your smile, we hope you won’t be shy about examining the many options now available for turning it into one you’ll be proud to show. Our interest in you extends beyond just fixing your teeth—we want you to feel totally unselfconscious about your mouth so that you will have every reason to break into a smile. Call BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL for an appointment to discuss your particular dental needs at 585.343.4246, 6 Batavia City Centre. P.S. Saliva helps protect enamel by coating teeth in a healthy layer of calcium and minerals.

GAS IN A CAR WON’T STAY FRESH FOREVER Can gas go bad? Yes it can, the lighter, more volatile components of gasoline evaporate over time. Old gas can compromise engine performance, potentially causing a car to hesitate or stall. Gas that has gone bad can begin to smell like varnish. To determine if gas smells differently, drivers should remove the gas cap and stand next to the car where you would normally put the gas pump. If you detect an aroma of varnish, then the gas has likely gone bad. Gas can begin to go bad in as little as three months, so drivers who haven’t driven much over that period may have bad gas in their tanks. One way drivers can combat bad gas, even if they aren’t driving much, is to add fuel stabilizer when filling up the tank. Fuel stabilizer keeps gas from degrading, but it’s only effective if it is mixed with good gasoline, hence the reason to add it when filling up and not when you detect the gas already in the car has gone bad.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles A Trip to the Museum
A local art museum, lacking many patrons because people are still avoiding crowds due to COVID, came up with a great idea: open the place to seniors. Those of us who’ve been locked down for too long, turning up our noses at proposed activities at the senior center, thought this was a swell idea. We did, however, decline the offer of a van. Instead, we all drove in our individual vehicles to avoid being breathed on by others. The museum was ... lovely. So excited was staff to have real and actual patrons that they pulled out all the stops for us. Young docents-in-training hovered, but not too closely, as we spread out in the large, high-ceilinged rooms clutching our brochures. Spend more than 10 seconds in front of a display of Mediterranean antiquities, and a docent would appear, many steps away, to tell us about the artifacts. Squint at the detail of a Winslow Homer painting, and there would be a docent offering a magnifying glass and talking about brush work. Look at the artistry of the Native American baskets and wonder how they got all those varied colors, and a docent would know. It didn’t hurt our feelings at all to be told later that these docents-in-training were students at a local art school and would get extra credit for their participation. They did a fine job. The senior center staff did too, surprising us with a bagged lunch on the museum grounds after our visit. There were enough picnic benches for us to spread out in the sunshine, and a male spouse was commandeered to tote around a cooler of iced drinks to hand out, along with a wide variety of chips for us to trade like school children. It’s a good thing I had my checkbook in my purse. Before I left, I purchased a membership as a Friend of the Museum. I’ll be back. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

Loud Obnoxious Neighbor! I’ve enjoyed my porch for 20 years. Four years ago, enter my new neighbor’s wife, who seems to enjoy screaming every sentence that comes to mind, including yelling at her 2 year old and yelling into the telephone like it was two tin cans connected by a string. Guess what? Your neighbors don’t want to hear it. I no longer enjoy sitting on my porch as I can’t stand the constant yelling that has replaced the birds chirping.
S E V RA Teamwork After last Saturday’s event involving farm equipment and electric lines (and cable lines and telephone lines) in Oakfield, I wanted to put in a good word about how all the agencies involved worked diligently together for safety, protection, and repair during this incident. Although our services were off for a bit, the agencies involved responded quickly and efficiently. Having a bird’s eye view of this provided first-hand knowledge of all that was involved and the extent it took to repair and return full service to the residents of Oakfield. In present times, it is hard to justify the rising cost of just about everything, but to witness the manpower, the equipment involved, and to see how these people worked together as a well-oiled machine, (and it is dangerous work), I can understand where at least some of the money goes when paying for these services. So, I would like to say thank you again [to these people] for all they do. Lab Visit I just went to get my blood work done. I have bad veins and am always nervous when I have to get blood drawn. I love going to [local] labs because they cater to my individual needs and always do a good job. This time I got [name]. She had a beautiful personality. Although she had trouble getting my blood to go in the syringe, she [did] get the job done. She had to stick me twice. I always tell people that they get just one chance with me. After she had trouble with the initial stick, I told her that I would come back. For her to talk me into [trying] again was, in itself, a miracle...I want to thank her for getting me through the process. Hats off to her. See you [again next time]. Helpful Staff Thanks to Avon Officer Hall and the Landpro driver who each stopped to see if we needed help after driving over an object that left a gash in our tire.

The Least Intelligent Recently, we heard of another mass shooting. This shooting was caused by what I consider the least intelligent type of person. That is, those who are prejudicial. Prejudicial people seem to believe that they had a choice in who their birth parents were. If people had that ability, then everyone would probably be wealthy and belong to a loving family, the same race, gender, and ethnic background. We would be so much alike that nobody would be able to tell us apart. That is not the case, and any intelligent person knows that. I thank God for our differences because it is those differences that make life more interesting. Lazy Jogging Pet Owner I was standing at the front door and checking out the start to a beautiful Sunday when I saw a woman jogging with her white dog through my front yard. I didn’t mind until the dog stopped for a bathroom break and proceeded to poop on my front lawn. I opened the door and made eye contact with the woman. She started pulling her dog and jogging away. Seriously, carry dog poop bags and clean up after your pet! It’s just rude, and I would have given you a bag! Busted To the couple who swiped my geraniums off my porch Saturday night: you’re on video! Enjoy my Mother’s Day flowers from my kids.

Lima/Avon: Marc J. Stevens was born on September 4th, 1960 in Warsaw, NY and passed away on May 24th, 2022 at his home in Lima. Predeceased by his father, Charles Stevens; mother, Laura Iler and sister, Donna Burdick. Marc is survived by his brother, Donald Stevens; sisters, Joni Hayes, Julie Stevens and Jeanette (Larry) Commanda. No funeral services will be held. Marc’s ashes will be scattered in places that were close to his heart.
General eulogy preparation tips: * Eulogies are for the living, and for everyone at a remembrance service. * Be brief. People listen for three to five minutes. After five minutes, people stop listening. * Do a bit of research. Talk to others. What are some childhood memories? Was there a favorite lesson learned? Was there a favorite quote or an inspiring song? What was the deceased like at work? What were some favorite accomplishments? * Write out the eulogy. Even if you are an experienced speaker, during the emotional time of a rememberance service it is especially easy to wander. * Write and speak from the heart. Be yourself. * Practice the eulogy. Time it. Rehearse in front of an audience (one or two people). Listen to their feedback. Edit. Practice again. * Have a back-up plan. In case you are unable to begin or finish, have someone else prepared to deliver the eulogy for you.
He was a devoted Mets and Buffalo Bills fan. He enjoyed playing golf and shooting darts and won 2 Rochester Dart championships. He worked at Kodak for many years and then worked at Chloride in Caledonia before retiring. He was a life member of the Mumford Fire Department and past president. He really enjoyed announcing all of the Cal-Mum youth football games for years. He will be sadly missed by all his friends (The Brothers) from Watertown and by anyone who had the privilege of knowing him. There will be a celebration of his life on June 18 at 2 PM at the Mumford fire hall. Anyone wishing to donate in Doug’s memory may do so to the Mumford Fire Department at PO Box 477 Mumford, NY 14511.

But in certain ways, the reliance on technology has made working as a team more complicated. People have grown accustomed to spending large quantities of time alone working at computers or on phones and tablets, potentially compromising their ability to work directly with others when the need arises. According to Monster.com, when it comes to choosing a candidate for a new job or promotion, employers consistently say they want a team player. That means it’s advantageous for professionals looking to further their careers to brush up on their team-building and social skills.

HOW TO MAKE YOUR OFFICE MORE ECO-FRIENDLY Turn computers off at quitting time. Frequently turning computers on and off can produce small surges of energy each time the computer is turned on. But the United States Department of Energy notes that this energy surge pales in comparison to the energy consumed when computers are left on for long periods of time. When going home for the day or leaving your desk for more than 20 minutes, whether it’s during lunch hour or to attend a meeting, turn your monitor off. If you expect to be away from your computer for more than two hours, turn both the computer and the monitor off. Employers who make these suggestions to their employees may reduce their office energy consumption and save money along the way.

CONSERVE ENERGY AROUND THE OFFICE Conservation methods can help save energy and preserve natural resources, but business owners may also be intrigued by the potential cost-savings of conservation. Utility costs vary depending on the size of a business, but the U.S. Small Business Administration notes that prospective business owners must estimate and include such costs when seeking loans to start their businesses. Estimated utility costs can be intimidating, especially for those owners who have never before owned their own businesses. Traditional conservation methods like recycling and reusing are great ways to conserve and save around the office, but business owners also can embrace some other ways to lower their office energy costs while benefitting the planet at the same time.
