STAY SAFE IN BRIGHT DRIVING CONDITIONS Observe speed limits. When glare is present, slow down and keep more space between your vehicle and the vehicle in front of you. If someone in front of you needs to brake suddenly, the greater distance between vehicles can give you more time to react and avoid accidents.

RIDESHARING SAFETY TIPS Avoid cash exchanges. Many ridesharing services automatically charge rides to passengers’ credit cards. Chip-in arrangements for other carpooling can be made via PayPal or other methods that do not involve cash. Avoid getting in a car with a driver who asks to be paid in cash.

Frequent breaks can help combat the stiffness and muscle aches that may not appear until gardeners finish their gardening sessions. Breaks help to alleviate muscles or joints that can become overtaxed when gardening for long, uninterrupted periods of time. When leaning down or working on your hands and knees, stand up to take breaks every 20 minutes or the moment aches and pains start to make their presence felt.

HOME IMPROVEMENT

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Things that usually come easily and quickly for the Aries Lamb might need more of your time and attention during the next several days. Try to be patient as you work things out. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) A changing situation can create some complications. But if you apply that sensible Bovine mind to what seems to be a hopeless tangle of confusion, you’ll soon sort things out. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Creating a new look for your surroundings is fun. Expect to hear mostly positive comments on your efforts, as well as some well-intended suggestions you might want to note. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Maybe you’d rather do anything else than what you’re “stuck with” right now. But if you stop complaining, you might see how this could lead to something with real potential. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Even a proud Leo ultimately recovers from hurt feelings. However, a damaged relationship might never heal unless you’re willing to spend more time and effort trying to work things out. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) There are lots of changes on the horizon, so be prepared to make some adjustments in your usually fine-tuned life. One change might even impact a personal decision you’ve been putting off. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Being the dependable person you are could work in your favor for a project that requires both skill and accountability. But check this out carefully. There could be a hidden downside. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A temperamental outburst about a mishandled project causes some fallout. Be sure to couple an apology with an explanation. A new opportunity beckons by week’s end. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Changing horses midstream is usually unwise but sometimes necessary. Examine your options carefully before making a decision. A trusted colleague offers good advice. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) While much of your time is involved with business matters, fun-time opportunities open up by week’s end. Enjoy yourself, but be careful that you don’t overspend. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A “revelation” opens your eyes to what is really going on in the workplace. What you learn could make a difference in your career path. Continue to be alert for more news. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Not wanting to make waves might be the safest way to deal with a difficult situation. But no substantive changes can be made unless you share your assessments with others. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a way of talking to people that makes them want to listen. You could find a successful career in politics.

Use ergonomic gardening tools. Ergonomic gardening tools are designed to prevent the types of aches, pains and injuries that can cut gardeners’ seasons short. Gardening injuries can affect any area of the body, but injuries or aches and pains affecting the back, wrists and hands are among the most common physical problems gardeners endure. Look for ergonomic tools that reduce the strain on these areas of the body. Even arthritis sufferers who love to garden may find that ergonomic tools make it possible for them to spend more time in their gardens without increasing their risk for injury.

Q &A

with the

Go beyond visual appeal when designing a garden. When gardeners tap into all five senses, they can enjoy their landscapes even more than they already do.

Look for this weekly column! Your questions answered by the local Cornell experts.

Master

Gardeners What is the best way to deal with slugs in my veggie garden? - Amanda D. Wet conditions and organic matter are favorable to slug problems. Depending on the extent of the planting slugs can be handpicked and removed. Organic mulch and plastic soil covers make excellent habitat and hiding places which can increase your problem. In some situations, wetted boards or heavy cardboard can be placed on garden soil and the slugs disposed of daily as they accumulate on the bottom. Replace the covers for the next night. Bait pellets containing iron are now available which will slowly kill slugs but will not pose a hazard to pets

from Cornell Cooperative Extension, Livingston County or other soil organisms. The previous generation of pellets containing metaldehyde or ormethiocarb can cause serious kidney damage to dogs and cats if they are eaten. Iron occurs naturally in soil, nothing else will be injured with this kind of product. Read the labels to find a product containing iron. And bear in mind - you must read the label for all use and precautions. (The label is the law, as they say in the trade.) Slugs do the most damage when plants are young. In fact, they’re great pre-emergence seedling killers. So, start your baiting early if you choose to bait - the “early and often” approach. No way can you put bait down once and consider your

problem solved. Sure, you might (if you’re lucky) kill the majority of slugs in your garden, but you have to stay on your game. Those populations will recover as time goes by. Additional strategies include reducing use of mulch in problem areas, and removing leaves that touch the ground on vulnerable plants.

When I moved into my home, 4 years ago, the front yard had an established garden with 4 different varieties of lilies. They have taken over the garden and need to be split and moved. When is the best time to do this? - Shirley S. Early spring--when you see the first shoots coming up. Dig up the clump, divide them and replant.

ACCLIMATING TO A NEW NEIGHBORHOOD For a number of people, this may be the year they relocate to a new home or apartment. The moving rate in the United States has remained steady since 2008, with roughly 12 percent of the population relocating each year according to reports from the U.S. Census Bureau. Movement to the suburbs continues to be high, and renters tend to move more frequently than others. People who move cite a new job or a job transfer as one of the primary motivators to relocate. Acclimating to a new home and neighborhood after a move can be challenging. Even after boxes have been unpacked and items put away, some people still feel unsettled. It could be because one of the most important parts of being in a new house is feeling at home. That involves meeting neighbors, having friends over for dinner and knowing all of the local haunts that help solidify a homeowner as a true member of his or her new neighborhood. It can take time to establish feeings of belonging.

THE BIBLE SAYS “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.” (Genesis 1:1) “All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.” ( John 1:3) “For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.” (Colossians 1:16,17) “Know ye that the LORD he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.” (Psalms 100:3) “For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.” (Luke 19:10)

Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE If the goal is to change the color, size, shape, and width of a patient’s teeth, porcelain veneers are a good option. By covering the front surfaces of teeth with thin, tooth-colored, custom-made porcelain “wafers,” the dentist can effectively treat chipped, stained, discolored, misshapen, narrow, or uneven teeth. Because this is a cosmetic procedure, the dentist must also take the patient’s age, gender, personality, eye color, and skin tone into account. For instance, keeping the edges of the teeth straighter creates a more masculine smile, while rounded-out corners produce a more feminine look. For older patients, having the front two teeth slightly longer than the rest can take 15 years off an older face by providing more lip support. If you’re not happy with your smile, we hope you won’t be shy about

examining the many options available today in cosmetic dentistry like porcelain veneers, bonding, whitening, and reshaping. Our interest in you extends beyond just fixing your teeth-we want you to feel totally unselfconscious about your mouth so that you will have every reason to break into a smile. Call BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL for an appointment to discuss your particular dental needs at 585.343.4246. New patients are always welcome at 6 Batavia City Centre. P.S. While ultra-bright white veneers may be suitable for younger patients, older patients may want to select slightly darker shades of white to achieve the most natural look.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Meningioma Is Tumor of Brain’s Lining ---

DEAR DR. ROACH: In January 2014, I was diagnosed with a benign neoplasm of my cerebral meninges (meningioma). I am a healthy 64-year-old Caucasian woman. I do not take any medications. The finding was incidental. I have no symptoms from the meningioma. I sometimes feel as if my mental capacity has declined somewhat (such as memory), but I attribute this to the normal aging process. I have been getting an MRI every year since the diagnosis. The last test showed that the tumor was 2.9 cm by 1.6 cm by 2.7 cm. The mass measured 2.3 cm by 1.3 cm by 2.1 cm when I had the first MRI in 2014. It seems to be slowly growing. What are your thoughts on this? Do you advise surgery at this time? -- C.C. ANSWER: A meningioma is a type of brain tumor that arises from the meninges, the lining of the brain. Most of these are benign, although they do range from benign to cancerous. Even the cancerous tumors very rarely spread. The main problem with this type of tumor is that they grow, and there is not a lot of room inside the skull to spare. An enlarging tumor can compress the brain, and that can lead to symptoms. Depending on the exact location of the tumor, it can cause weakness, loss of vision or loss of hearing or smell. Another common symptom is a seizure. Changes in mental function are less common, but I am very cautious about ascribing symptoms to aging. Although the change in size seems small, the tumor has approximately doubled in size since 2014. That is a clear indication for treatment. It will likely keep growing and cause symptoms. Surgery is a treatment option, as is radiation, but only an expert can make the assessment of what is best in your situation. If the tumor is in a favorable location, most authorities would recommend surgical removal of the tumor. ***

DEAR DR. ROACH: My 59-year-old son has cirrhosis, probably from a blood transfusion he had as a teenager. His gastroenterologist tells him he is two years away from going on the transplant list for a new liver. Do you know if someone with compatible blood could donate a piece of his or her liver? Would that provide him with enough healthy liver? Also, he heard that you live only about five years with a new liver. Is that true? -- B.M. ANSWER: Cirrhosis after a blood transfusion makes me suspect that your son’s liver disease is due to hepatitis C. If that’s the case, his gastroenterologist has had or will have a discussion with him about new treatments for hepatitis C that will hopefully keep him from needing a transplant. However, if he does need a transplant, it can be done from a family member or even from a nonrelated person. There are risks to the donor, but major complications happen in only 1 to 3 percent of cases. The transplanted lobe of the liver does rapidly regenerate. The results for the recipient are comparable to that of deceased organ donors. Only the transplant surgeons can recommend whether a living donor is possible. For adults in your son’s age group, the likelihood of surviving five years after liver transplantation is about 70 percent. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. YOUR FUNGAL CURE!! TOENAILS

Give Back

• Were you embarrassed this summer to wear sandals or go barefoot because of thick, yellow nails? Now’s the time to get treatment. • If left untreated, fungal toenails can cause: recurring athlete’s foot, infected ingrown toenails (requiring surgery) and discomfort wearing shoes, not to mention their unsightly appearance. • Patients with diabetes, poor circulation, and numbness to their feet can develop more serious complications. • There are safer, new topical medications available to help cure fungal toenails. • A simple one a day pill for 3 months will usually cure fungal toenails within 6-9 months from the start of treatment. • Treatment now may result in clear, thinner nails for the year 2016. • Call now for an appointment to determine if you’re a candidate for this newer treatment.

UNDERSTANDING LIFE INSURANCE When choosing coverage, you will no doubt be asked if you prefer term insurance or permanent insurance. Term insurance is the least expensive life insurance, and such policies only last for a predetermined number of years. Men and women may purchase life insurance policies if they only want life insurance until they retire or until their children reach adulthood. Permanent insurance is more expensive and will last from the moment you purchase the policy until your death. Many people choose permanent life insurance policies so the money their beneficiaries receive upon their death can be used to pay estate taxes. In addition, there is an investment component to permanent insurance policies, as a portion of the premiums on such policies is invested (policies will spell out how the money is invested) and allowed to grow tax-free so long as the policy is open. Term insurance only provides protection with no investments.

“In this world there are only two tragedies. One is not getting what one wants; the other is getting it. The last is much worse; the last is a real tragedy.....” ~ Oscar Wilde We all scurry through life, engaged in a constant struggle to “succeed”… to achieve our goals, of which many are materialistic. Wilde suggests that it is perhaps just as well that most of us fail to obtain all of the goals we pursue. We can all recall examples of this phenomenon. As children, it may have been a toy we simply had to possess. Yet, once obtained, the pleasure of possession fell far short of our expectations. The key to avoiding such a tragedy lies in setting goals which are more spiritual in nature, more difficult to achieve. Satisfaction will then come from wellspent effort. You can spare your loved ones the burden of making painful decisions. Let us explain the benefits of arrangements made prior to need.

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel • On June 9, 1772, colonists, angered by the British Parliament’s passing of the Townshend Acts restricting colonial trade, board and set ablaze the HMS Gaspee, an armed British customs schooner that had run aground. British officials found no one willing to identify those involved, and the inquiry closed without result. • On June 4, 1919, the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, guaranteeing women the right to vote, is passed by Congress and sent to the states for ratification. On Aug. 18, 1920, Tennessee became the 36th state to ratify the amendment, giving it the two-thirds majority necessary to make it the law of the land. • On June 3, 1937, the duke of Windsor -- formerly King Edward VIII -- marries Wallis Warfield Simpson, the American divorcee for whom he abdicated the British throne in 1936.

New Survey Reveals BP Monitoring Habits Need To Improve (NAPS)—A new survey from the American Heart Association and the American Medical Association shows that 40 percent of people with high blood pressure (HBP), or hypertension, report their numbers were still too high at their most recent doctor’s appointment, and many don’t even know their numbers. The Problem HBP occurs when the force of blood flowing through your blood vessels is consistently too high. Ideally, blood pressure should be below 120/80 mmHg. It’s considered elevated if the top number (systolic pressure) is above 120 and high if systolic is 130 or higher, or the bottom number (diastolic pressure) is 80 or higher. Uncontrolled, it can lead to heart attack and stroke, and most of the time there are no obvious symptoms. What People With HBP Can Do Most people say they know what to do to lower HBP. Yet, according to the new survey, 44 percent of those with HBP didn’t know what a high reading is, and 27 percent didn’t know what their blood pressure was the last time it was checked. In addition, while 80 percent of those diagnosed with HBP say they take medication, 16 percent of those with HBP believe that as long as they take their BP medication, they don’t need to monitor their BP. “The first step to keeping your numbers under control is knowing what they are,” said Sondra DePalma, DHSc, a cardiology PA and certified hypertension specialist. “There are no symptoms of high blood pressure, so you can’t rely on how you feel to gauge your levels. You have to take the time—less than 10 minutes—to check it. That’s 10 minutes well spent, considering controlled blood pressure can add five years to your life.” Some people will need medication to keep their blood pressure numbers in a healthy range, DePalma said. “But that doesn’t mean you get a free pass on lifestyle changes to support your blood pressure– lowering therapy. Making healthier living choices helps your medicine work better.” DePalma added that under a doctor’s care, some people may be able to reduce their medication dose or wean off of it after making consistent progress with lifestyle changes. Lifestyle changes that help reduce blood pressure include: • Get regular physical activity: Ninety–150 minutes a week of aerobic activity can reduce systolic blood pressure about 5 mmHg. • Eat a well-balanced diet low in salt: Eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, whole grains and low-fat dairy, such as the DASH eating plan, can drop your systolic pressure up to 11 mmHg. Reducing your salt intake by about 1,000 mg per day has a similar effect on systolic pressure as increasing aerobic activity—dropping it about 5 mmHg. • Maintain a healthy weight: For about every two pounds lost, your systolic pressure could drop 1 mmHg. • Work together with your doctor to create a treatment plan. Learn More For more facts and tips about HBP and how to control it, go to www. heart.org/hbp. Many people with high blood pressure aren’t keeping close tabs on their condition.

Local Gem Linwood Gardens Opens for Rare Extra Saturday By Amanda Dudek

A

long York Road towards Pavilion appears a rather inconspicuous sign bearing the name Linwood Gardens at the mouth of a wooded drive. Upon entering, an entire secluded world opens up, and visitors are welcomed to the Linwood Summer House, overlooking the Genesee Valley. For select days each year, Linwood Gardens offers guests a peek into its unique beauty during its Tree Peony Festival of Flowers. The year was 1935, four years before the outbreak of World War II, and William H. Gratwick III (W.G.) was looking to Japan for very different reasons. “He had a lot of interests,” said W.G.’s granddaughter, Clara Mulligan. “He was a horticulturist, a landscape architect, an artist; he raised sheep. He was quite the man.” W.G.’s father, William Henry Gratwick II of Buffalo, had built Linwood Gardens between 1901 and 1910 as a summer home for his family. When he died in 1933, W.G. moved his family to Linwood Gardens permanently. W.G., an avid horticulturist, created a rare plants nursery at Linwood. “My grandfather began importing flowers in the 1930’s-1940’s,” said Clara. Then, chemistry professor, A. P Saunders, had introduced him to Japanese tree peonies. Known as the King of Flowers and grown in monasteries, temple courts and Imperial Palaces, Japanese tree peonies, themselves hybridized from Chinese tree peonies, are rough, woody-stemmed bush-like plants which grow 4-6 feet in height and almost equal width. Their large, colorful blooms are delicate, perfuming the air with their gentle fragrance. Gratwick imported 115 named tree peony cultivars and 500 tree peony seeds from Japan. Gratwick and Saunders began hybridizing new tree peony varieties; Nassos Daphnis, an artist from New York City, was attracted to the beautiful flowers and, in 1945, joined them in hybridizing tree peonies, as well. Gratwick continued to raise and propagate the original Japanese imports, the Daphnis and Saunders hybrids, and his own introductions from the original acquisition of the 500 seeds. He also added sculpture and new garden areas to Linwood, which currently displays twelve structures to visitors: the Entrance Gate, the Summer House, the Swimming Pool, the Italian Garden, the labyrinth, Saunder’s Hill, Dwarf Village, the Vegetable Garden, the Tree Peony Nursery, the Walled Garden, the Lily Pond and the Chapel. Linwood is not trying to be grandiose, explaining that they can only handle a certain number of visitors at a time with the volunteers they have. “We like it when about 1,500 people visit us annually,” Clara said. These funds provide a means of maintaining Linwood. “Everything is 100 years old now,” Clara pointed out. The family has already restored the Summer Home to its current state after a devastating fire in 1973. “Our goal is not to restore it completely,” added Clara. “This is manageable.” “Linwood Gardens has always welcomed the public,” said Clara, referencing her grandmother’s community music school and a host of cultural activities held at Linwood in the past. “We hold the festival because the tree peonies are blooming,” Clara explained. “The gardens are at their peak right now, and this is our way of letting the public participate.” Mulligan added that since there were hardly any blooms during the festival’s first weekend this year, Linwood Gardens has added Saturday, June 8th. While Linwood Gardens nonprofit holds these events, Clara Mulligan points out that Linwood is a private residence. “It is my mother’s place,” she states. “The nonprofit takes over the house and the gardens for events. We see it as a way of serving our community.” Clara Mulligan’s mother, W.G.’s daughter, Lee Gratwick, currently lives at Linwood, and Clara Mulligan, along with her own daughter, gardening enthusiast Holly Watson, help Mrs. Gratwick to preserve,

Fresh raindrops on tree peony blossoms care for and improve it. “My mother has been on the property full time since 1980,” Clara shared. “My generation is very involved, as well, and my daughter, Holly, is very keen on the property and collection.” “It serves our community as a sanctuary,” Clara continued. “It is very quiet and peaceful. You would never know we are surrounded by active dairy farms. It was originally designed as a very formal garden, but it all grew up. Now, my mother is trying to tame it, but we are blending wild and tame. It is much more calming, rather than feeling overmanaged.” Linwood Gardens offers visitors the opportunity to explore on their own on select days. It also offers tours, which include the many garden rooms and takes, according to Clara Mulligan, about an hour and a half to complete as well as hosting open gardens days and workshops during the summer. “Photographers, painters and more come and enjoy,” Clara said. “Many visit and want to come back.” It is a joy to the Gratwick family to share the beauty of their tree peonies with these guests. “We go crazy in the middle of the week sometimes when all of the peonies are blooming!” exclaimed Clara. “We are so excited for the weekend because we truly have something to show you. We see the most extraordinary things, and we can’t wait to share them.” For more information, visit www.linwoodgardens.org. Have something interesting you’d like to share with our readers? HOW COUPLES CAN BENEFIT FROM HIRING LOCAL WEDDING VENDORS: Individuals who take great strides to conserve resources by reducing their energy consumption and protecting the environment often find that shopping local is beneficial. Local vendors are more likely to source their materials from other local businesses, reducing their carbon footprints along the way. For example, local caterers may rely on local farmers for their foods, affording couples the chance to host eco-friendly or even farm-to-table weddings.

A few weeks ago, I was at Walmart in Batavia. I was in a hurry to move my car closer to the exit. My mom was waiting for me inside. She couldn’t walk far, so she was on my mind. After we got to her house, I couldn’t find my purse. I called the store, and customer service had it. Someone had found I used a wheelbarrow to put my yard debris by the roadside. It makes it easier to take out more than one bag at a time and bring them back in when they aren’t removed weekly. While taking out my trash I noticed that someone had dumped my yard bags and stolen my wheelbarrow! REALLY?!! Please return - no questions asked. I went in to make a deposit in my husband’s checking account. The teller wouldn’t accept my cash because, even though I was a beneficiary on the account, it was not a joint account. She said it had something to do with money laundering. Really? I told her that it was just a few hundred dollars, not $10,000. I asked how we could make GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

this happen. Finally, she said that she could put the money in my checking account, then transfer it into my husband’s account. At one point, she even asked me if I opened the account in NY. I had, right at that branch. Then, she wouldn’t accept my checks, because my husband’s signature was needed since it was my son’s check, even though my son had already signed it. This teller was unfriendly, not pleasant and just made the bank lose three customers. Never again!

I couldn’t believe my eyes; my heart was pounding due to the thought of almost hitting him! Imagine if his mom got a call on Mother’s Day letting her know that someone had hit her son. He could have been seriously injured, if not DOA! I would have felt terrible, and I almost pulled a U-turn to talk some sense into his head. HOBBIES FOR DIFFERENT PERSONALITY TYPES Men and women who have experienced great success in the world of business can pursue a host of low-stress opportunities with a goal of sharing their experiences with the next generation of business leaders. Teaching a course at a local college or university is one such avenue, and executives can even offer to work with high school students interested in pursuing careers in business. Teaching and mentoring might be less traditional hobbies than crocheting or woodworking, but they still provide a way for adults to pursue their passions away from the constraints of the office.

DINING OUT WITH INFANTS New parents often need a respite from the near-constant demands of infants. Dining out can be one of those breaks. When a babysitter is unavailable or if you’re not yet comfortable leaving a little one with someone else, bringing baby along may be possible. First, find a family-friendly restaurant or try an establishment that has outdoor seating where you can quickly distance yourself from other diners if need be. Time dining out around the baby’s feeding and sleeping schedule. Babies sated by a recent feeding and a relaxing car ride may be more inclined to sleep through your restaurant meal. Just in case, pack an extra bottle or prepare to breastfeed to keep your baby happy.

LOCAL DINING SPOTS FOSTER COMMUNITY Dining out is a great way to celebrate life’s milestones or simply reconnect with friends and loved ones. Research firm NPD Group found that, by the end of 2015, restaurant visits by consumers increased by 700 million compared to just five years prior. While chain restaurants invest heavily in advertising, independently owned restaurants do not have those same resources. Multi-unit chains also have more pull with suppliers and might be able to negotiate better deals, or can spread operational costs across various locations. Too often diners are not aware of the vast array of tasty, well-priced and artisanal foods awaiting them just down the street. Much can be said about the advantages of patronizing local eateries. Men and women who want unique dining experiences can give local, independently owned establishments a try.

CALL Independent Living of the Genesee Region 585-815-8501 x403 BE SAFE, HEALTHY AND HAPPY IN THE WORKPLACE WHILE PREGNANT The first thing pregnant working women should know is that they have the right to work while pregnant. In the United States, it has been illegal to discriminate against pregnant women in the workplace since 1978, when the Pregnancy Discrimination Act was passed. But in spite of those laws, some employers may be less receptive to their female employees’ pregnancies, with some insisting they harbor good intentions, such as the woman’s safety. Businesses cannot fire employees for being pregnant, and many courts have ruled that decisions about the safety of the woman and fetus are up to the employee and her doctor, not her boss. On the same token, a company cannot refuse to hire a person simply because she’s pregnant. EMPLOYMENT

THINGS TO LOOK FOR IN A NEW JOB Work/life balance: Before beginning your search for a new job, think about why you want to switch careers or companies. Long hours often leads to burnout. If you’re looking for a new job because you’re burned out, try to find a job that affords you a better work/life balance. A study from the Happiness Research Institute in Copenhagen found that, with the curious exception of people who work more than 55 hours per week, stress rises accordingly with the numbers of hours worked each week. Keep that in mind if your goal is to find a job that affords you a better work/life balance.

ADVICE FOR A SUCCESSFUL CAREER CHANGE Use your network. The notion that “it’s not what you know, but who you know” has some truth to it. Successful jobseekers continually expand their professional contacts. This is achieved by going to informational interviews, attending trade association meetings and reviewing trade publications. Target people who work at the companies where you see yourself, so you can get the inside track about job openings.
