GO GREEN WHEN SPENDING TIME OUTDOORS THIS SUMMER Embrace eco-friendly activities. Various activities, from organic gardening to planting trees to beach cleanups, provide a great way to get outdoors and help the planet at the same time. Men and women who grow their own vegetables can take solace knowing that the vegetables they’re eating each night did not require the depletion of any natural resources to go from garden to table. Signing up for beach cleanups can prevent trash, including harmful plastics, from making its way into the world’s oceans, and such cleanups provide a great excuse to go to the beach.

Many people may be tempted to discard rusty tools that have gone unused and sat in a garage or shed for a significant period of time. But tools encrusted with rust do not need to be relegated to the trash bin, nor do gardeners have to toil for hours scraping and sanding off the rust. There’s a much easier way to restore rusty tools that relies on a common household ingredient: vinegar. Pour vinegar into a deep enough vessel to submerge the metal part of the tool. Soak the tool overnight. The next day, use a scouring pad to rub off the rust. If the tool is too big to fit into a can or bucket, simply wrap it with a vinegarsoaked rag and cover the whole tool with a tightly secured plastic bag. Follow the same procedure the next day. After all the rust is gone, rinse the tool in cool water and dry thoroughly. Then return it to regular usage.

As the days get longer and the weather improves, this is the time to make sure that our homes or rental properties are well maintained.

Help plants survive sizzling summer heat Move plants when possible. Plant location can affect their chances of surviving summer heat. Driveways lined with flowers or other plants may look nice, but driveways exposed to the sun can radiate heat at temperatures that exceed the temperatures noted on the thermometer. If possible, move plants to locations on your property that are less exposed to the heat and/or less likely to be affected by the heat. Move container plants beneath trees on hot days, and consider summer heat waves before planting new flower beds.

739-1707 • cobletree@gmail.com STAY COOL THIS SUMMER WHILE LIMITING ENERGY CONSUMPTION Smart watering conserves water and saves money Place sprinklers correctly. If you do not have an in-ground irrigation system and don’t intend to install one, you will likely use lawn sprinklers to water the lawn. When placing these sprinklers, turn them on and then document their trajectory before moving on to the next area. You want to make sure the water from the sprinklers is not landing on sidewalks, patios or streets, especially if your community typically institutes drought restrictions that limit how much you can water. In such instances, you’ll need to make the best use of the water you’re allowed to use, so make sure none of it is watering the driveway.

Draw the blinds or close the drapes on especially hot days. Drawing blinds and closing drapes can keep the sun out of the home, lowering temperatures inside as a result. While many homeowners understandably do not want their homes to be dark all day long, on especially hot days when the summer is bearing down, drawing the blinds or closing the drapes can have a substantial impact on comfort levels inside the home.

from Cornell Cooperative Extension, Livingston County Where is a good place to buy milkweed seeds? – Bonnie Milkweed seeds may be purchased most readily from online sources including Prairie Moon Nursery, where I have been satisfied with my purchases. There are several varieties of milkweed native to the northeast. I would recommend butterfly weed (ASCLEPIAS TUBEROSA) as most appropriate for a home garden. Some people grow common field milkweed (ASCLEPIAS SYRIACA), but it has deep rhizomes (roots) that will spread over a large area.

I would like to plant some native flowers to attract butterflies and birds. Where do I get a list of such plants that are good for this area? – Bonnie There are so many interesting and beautiful native plants to choose from. The Finger Lakes Native Plant Society, website flnps.org, has an

exhaustive list of native plants in a 25-page printable list entitled “Native Plants Suitable for Wildflower Gardens & Meadows or Traditional Gardens in the NY Finger Lakes.” It is divided into 5 categories – 1. Herbaceous Plants-Annuals, Biennials, Perennials; 2. Ferns & Fern Allies; 3. Grasses, Sedges, Rushes; 4. Vines; 5. Shrubs & Trees.

Amanda’s Garden, Native Perennial Nursery. It is located in Sparta, NY (Dansville mailing address), at a beautiful site on Story Rd south of Hemlock Lake. The website is amandasnativeplants.com and contains an “Our Plants” section which includes images of native plants with brief descriptions. You can also sign up for their newsletter in which Anyone in our area interested they cover many aspects of native in native plants should know about perennial gardening.

Now’s the time to get treatment. • If left untreated, fungal toenails can cause: recurring athlete’s foot, infected ingrown toenails (requiring surgery) and discomfort wearing shoes, not to mention their unsightly appearance. • Patients with diabetes, poor circulation, and numbness to their feet can develop more serious complications. • There are safer, new topical medications available to help cure fungal toenails. • A simple one a day pill for 3 months will usually cure fungal toenails within 6-9 months from the start of treatment. • Treatment now may result in clear, thinner nails for the year 2016. • Call now for an appointment to determine if you’re a candidate for this newer treatment.

INTERNAL MEDICINE

By Keith Roach, M.D.

Is ‘Beaver Fever’ Cause of Digestive Trouble?

BOARD Certified

PULMONARY DISEASE

---

• PRIMARY CARE - Internal Medicine

DEAR DR. ROACH: Last summer I went camping and ran out of clean water. I had to boil water and drink it without any treatment tablets. That evening, I had painful cramps in my stomach, and in my upper abdomen, under my ribcage. Since then, my digestion has been horrific. I have constant rank gas and bloating when eating foods I’ve never had a problem with before, even fruits and vegetables. I have been a big eater of probiotic foods, with no digestive disturbances. However, since this incident, any form of probiotic, whether from capsule or natural foods like sauerkraut or kimchi, gives me the worst gas and bloating I’ve ever had. I had parasite and bacterial stool testing done with my doctor, and I came up clear. I feel like I need antibiotics or something to clear whatever is going on with my digestive system, but I’m hesitant because I have had four rounds of antibiotics in 2017 from surgeries. I am worried about “beaver fever.” What do you recommend? -- A.L. ANSWER: There are several infections one can get from drinking unprocessed water while camping. “Beaver fever” is a name for infection from the parasite Giardia lamblia, which is found in water where animals (especially beavers) are found. It’s a reasonable thought -- it’s one of the few waterborne infections that can persist for months. However, I think Giardia is unlikely. Symptoms from Giardia normally begin one to two weeks after exposure, and the parasites are killed very rapidly by boiling water. Your symptoms are very much like irritable bowel syndrome, and I do wonder if it might have been triggered by some event that day you were camping. Usually, three sets of cultures for parasites are done to make sure there isn’t an unwelcome guest in your intestine causing symptoms. A gastroenterologist would be a good choice to help you track down an identifiable cause and to get some symptomatic relief. Antibiotics are not recommended without knowing what you are treating.

Summer health and beauty guidelines Try tinted moisturizer. A carefree, breezy look often means not being weighed down by a lot of makeup. It may be possible to skip foundation and rely only on concealer to cover up small blemishes or alleviate dark circles under the eyes. Another option to try is tinted moisturizer, which can keep skin supple and offer a light amount of color to even out pigment. BB creams also can provide you with an all-in-one beauty product, as such creams frequently contain sunscreen, color tinting and anti-aging ingredients.

Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy

***

DEAR DR. ROACH: Seven years ago, I had a stroke. I was immediately put on Lipitor and Plavix. The statin drugs made my arms and shoulders ache, and the doctor tested me and found no reason for it. He said anecdotally that he had many patients who complained of the same thing. He then put me on fenofibrate. The pain stopped immediately. Now he says new research shows that any cholesterol-lowering drug makes the blood tests show lowered cholesterol levels but it does not prevent heart attack or stroke. So he took me off it. I wonder if you know anything about this study that said there was no benefit to taking statins. I did not really understand what he said. -- G.C. ANSWER: It sounds like the message got a bit confused. The evidence that statin drugs reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke in people at high risk, such as those who have had a previous event, is very strong. However, the evidence for fibrate drugs, such as fenofibrate, is much weaker. Statin drugs often cause some muscle aches. Pravastatin and fluvastatin are least likely to cause this problem, so it’s worth a try switching, in my opinion. Some people get relief from muscle aches with a CoQ10 supplement. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. PREGNANCY GINGIVITIS Among the many changes that women go through during pregnancy is the development of swollen gums that may be sore and vulnerable to bleeding. This form of gum inflammation, known as “pregnancy gingivitis,” is prompted by hormonal changes that lead to increased blood flow to the gums, making them swollen, sensitive, and irritated. It should also be noted that hormonal changes during pregnancy also slow the bodyís response to bacteria that cause gum infections. As a result, bacteria-laden plaque is more apt to accumulate on teeth, causing them to be more susceptible to gum disease. With all this in mind, pregnant women should schedule regular visits to the dentist to preclude potential gum problems.

It is our mission at BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL to create and maintain healthy and beautiful smiles for our patients in a nurturing and peaceful environment. We feel it is advantageous to educate our patients on the importance of preventive, quality dental care. Change your life with just a smile here at 6 Batavia City Centre, where we provide the optimum dental solution for each patient in our care. Call 585.343.4246 for an appointment. We accept most insurances. P.S. The severity of pregnancy gingivitis usually increases during the second trimester of pregnancy.

HOROSCOPE

LIVONIA

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Your honesty is, as always, admirable. But you might want to be more tactful in discussing a sensitive issue with a family member. Remember: You can give advice without giving offense. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) An unexpected workplace snag should be handled quickly and efficiently so that it leaves you time for family get-togethers. Also, you might soon get that long-sought apology. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Aspects favor family matters, especially where children might be involved. Spending time with loved ones helps restore some much-needed balance to your typically busy schedule. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) That seemingly clear-cut agreement might not be quite so straightforward after all. Recheck for language that could make you liable for hidden costs and other unpleasant surprises. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Careful, Kitty. Better to deal with someone with proven reliability than with a big talker who promises much but can’t confirm that he or she will deliver. Your social life really zings this weekend. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Your matchmaking skills are at peak performance levels both in helping to staff workplace teams for upcoming projects and for bringing people together on a more personal basis. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) You’re finally seeing some progress with your new venture. But be prepared for it to continue at a slower pace than you’re used to. Meanwhile, a loved one could be preparing a surprise. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A family member’s success pulls you into the spotlight as well. Enjoy it, but don’t let it overshadow or otherwise obstruct what you’re doing with your own creative projects. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Using what you already know might not be quite enough to get a proposed project off the ground. Look for any new information that might help tilt the scales in your favor. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Good news: While a changing workplace environment can be daunting for some, it could be the challenge you’ve been hoping for. If so, confront it with confidence and move on. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) It’s a good time to recheck travel arrangements for any changes that could work to your advantage. Aspects also favor strengthening and restoring old, fraying relationships. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Using your intuitive reasoning helps you cut right through the double-talk and go straight to what’s really going on around you. Stay the course until all your questions are answered. BORN THIS WEEK: You radiate light and warmth, and others love being close to you. (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

Simplify vacations and savor the fun Leave work behind. The United States is one of the few countries that does not guarantee paid days off. The Center for Economic and Policy Research says one in four working Americans do not get paid time off. The employment site Glassdoor notes that among those who do get paid vacations, 75 percent of employees chose not to use all of their time in 2013. By comparison, Canadians get an average of 19 days of vacation time per year. Stress about making up work or falling behind makes some professionals worry about using their vacation time, and those who do travel may stay connected to the office in some shape or form. Splitting time between leisure and work responsibilities on a vacation can be taxing and take away from the time you need to relax and recharge. Cut work ties and immerse yourself in the vacation experience.

Health Benefits Of Plant-Based Nutrition

HOW TO MAINTAIN MENTAL ACUITY Stay socially connected. Maintaining social connections with family, friends and community members also can help women prevent cognitive decline. Epidemiologist Bryan James of the Rush Alzheimer’s Disease Center studied how social activity affected cognitive decline, ultimately noting that the rate of cognitive decline was considerably lower among men and women who maintained social contact than it was among those with low levels of social activity.

(NAPS)—As people continue to look for ways to live healthier lifestyles, the plant-based diet continues to gain momentum. A plant-based diet describes a way of eating in which there is an emphasis on plant foods in the form of colorful fruits and vegetables, legumes and whole grains. Supporting Your Health with Plant-Based Foods Benefits of eating more plant foods are numerous. Plant foods are nutrient dense, which means that they provide an abundance of nutrients relative to their calorie cost. Fruits, veggies, beans and whole grains are terrific sources of vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients and they’re naturally cholesterol-free. Most contribute a fair amount of fiber, too, so they help to fill you up and keep your digestive tract running smoothly. When you include plenty of these nutritious, filling foods in your diet, it leaves less room in your stomach for less healthy fare. That said, as the proportion of U.S. consumers who adhere to a vegan diet grows, so does the desire for these people to get more protein. In fact, a Nielsen HomeScan survey recently found that 39 percent of Americans are actively trying to eat more plant-based foods and 60 percent want to get more protein in their diets. Identifying Sources of Plant-Based Proteins The major sources of plant-based protein include beans, peas and lentils but whole grains are also important. You may think of whole grains as more of a carb than a protein and that’s true—most grains have more carbohydrate calories than protein calories. But whole grains contribute important essential amino acids to the diet. Most vegans know that in order to get the full complement of essential amino acids (the building blocks of proteins in the body), it’s important to consume both legumes (beans, peas, lentils) and whole grains. Soy is one of the few complete plant-based proteins, meaning it contains the nine essential amino acids that your body cannot produce on its own. How Much Protein Is Right For You? Protein is important for maintaining lean body mass. Susan Bowerman, Registered Dietitian and Senior Director of Worldwide Nutrition Education and Training at Herbalife Nutrition says the Institute of Medicine recommends you eat 10 to 35 percent of your total daily calories from protein. You can estimate your protein needs based on your current body weight. Simply, multiply your body weight by 0.7. The number you get is a reasonable target for the amount of protein, in grams, that you should eat each day. For instance, a woman who weighs 140 pounds should aim for about 100g of protein a day. A 220-pound man should shoot for at least 150g of protein. Introducing Other Plant-Based Proteins While most plant-based diets place an emphasis on whole foods, other plant-based foods that are derived from these whole foods can be included. So, in addition to legumes and whole grains (brown or wild rice, oats, quinoa, millet and the like), other sources of plant-based protein include soy milk, soy cheese, soy yogurt, tofu, tempeh, and protein powders made from plant sources such as soy, pea, rice, hemp, oats or quinoa. To help, Herbalife Nutrition’s Formula 1 Select and Protein Drink Mix Select are two new plant-based nutrition mixes specially formulated with a high-quality blend of pea, quinoa and rice proteins. Formula 1 Select is specially formulated to provide an excellent balance of protein and other key nutrients for optimal nutrition, is an easily digestible source of high-quality plant protein and fiber, and contains no artificial flavors or sweeteners. A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel On July 19, 1884, President Chester Arthur issues a proclamation that grants him and the federal government the power to quarantine persons entering the U.S. to avoid the spread of “pestilence” (tuberculosis). On July 17, 1941, New York Yankees center fielder Joe DiMaggio fails to get a hit against the Cleveland Indians, bringing his historic 56-game hitting streak to an end. DiMaggio also lost the $10,000 promised to him by Heinz ketchup for matching the number “57” featured on its labels. On July 21, 1959, Elijah Jerry “Pumpsie” Green makes his Boston Red Sox debut, becoming the first African American ever to play for the Red Sox, the last team in the major leagues to integrate. On July 20, 1972, a two-year study by the U.S. Department of Transportation concludes that 1960-63 Chevrolet Corvairs are at least as safe as comparable models of other cars. In his book “Unsafe at Any Speed,” Ralph Nader had targeted the rear-engined Corvair due to its tendency to roll over.

HOW TO KEEP GRILLED FOODS WARM Create a tin foil tent and place foods inside. The tent can then be placed on a less hot area of the grill or placed into an oven that’s not on. Avoid tenting foods that are meant to have crispy skins, as tenting can moisten the skin.

HOBBIES FOR DIFFERENT PERSONALITY TYPES Book lovers also can channel their passions for the written word into a rewarding hobby. While reading might not seem like the most social activity, readers who want to use their love of books to grow their social networks can start a book club. People of all ages and backgrounds love to read, so starting a book club can be a great way to meet an array of people. Readers also can call their local libraries or schools to ask about reading programs for children. Volunteer to read to youngsters, helping the next generation discover the wonders of reading.

“I would rather be a poor man in a garret with plenty of books than a king who does not like reading…” ~ Macaulay

The person who loves to read is never alone…he has his choice of good friends, all available in the pages of books. Reading gives unlimited access to every point on earth, or even into far corners of the universe. The man who has plenty of books is wealthy…wealthy in terms of travel, of adventure, of knowledge that he can put to use in countless ways. He is much better off than others, even a mighty king, who have never learned of the satisfaction to be found between the covers of a book. UNDERSTANDING LIFE INSURANCE When choosing coverage, you will no doubt be asked if you prefer term insurance or permanent insurance. Term insurance is the least expensive life insurance, and such policies only last for a predetermined number of years. Men and women may purchase life insurance policies if they only want life insurance until they retire or until their children reach adulthood. Permanent insurance is more expensive and will last from the moment you purchase the policy until your death. Many people choose permanent life insurance policies so the money their beneficiaries receive upon their death can be used to pay estate taxes. In addition, there is an investment component to permanent insurance policies, as a portion of the premiums on such policies is invested (policies will spell out how the money is invested) and allowed to grow tax-free so long as the policy is open. Term insurance only provides protection with no investments.

CROSSWORD

DID YOU KNOW? Broadening one’s horizons through crafting can be a worthwhile pursuit. Crafting can serve as a relaxing pastime and provide an opportunity to learn rewarding skills. Learning to crochet is one way for men and women to combine creativity and practicality. Crochet is a form of handwork using yarn and a crochet hook. According to the Crochet Guild of America, there’s no way to know just how old the art of crochet is. However, crochet expert Annie Potter has said the modern form of the art originated in the 16th century, primarily in France and England. Others surmise crocheting traces its origins to Arabia before it spread westward through various Mediterranean trade routes.

I am writing this letter to convey my most deep and sincere appreciation for the incredibly supportive help I received during an emergency at my home in early June. Words cannot express my gratitude to Mike Kellogg, my neighbor who was there for me and went above and beyond to ensure my safety as well To those who are defending flying the Confederate flag: It is the 21st century, not the 19th. Regardless of your reasons for flying the flag, it has come to represent white supremacy. By flying it you are self-identifying as and aligning yourself with these terrorist groups, intentionally or not. It’s like flying a swastika and claiming you are not a Nazi sympathizer. Good luck with that. Then there is the issue of the Civil War ending over 150 years ago as did the Confederacy, so what’s your point? It’s time to let it go and move on. It’s not like you were around then and had a personal investment in the Southern cause. There is no place for the Confederate flag in the 21st century, save for in history museums. as to the First Responders whose determination to assist me helped save my life that day. Mike, your continued support and selfless acts of kindness to make things easier for me has not gone unnoticed; I am forever in your debt. To my family of 47 years at Graham Manufacturing, thank you for your love and kindness and inquiries, you are all unsung heroes in my book. I thank you all from the bottom of my heart. Sincerely, Lance Frens On the evening of June 12, 2019, my cat Kitten got hit by a car on Black Street Rd. in LeRoy. I would like to thank the lady kids could not play on a privately-owned, church playground: Empathy has nothing to do with it. That play equipment belongs to the church. I expect they are not in a position to maintain it for public use nor take on any liability for misuse. Having special needs does not mean your children are allowed to play with items that aren’t theirs. There are plenty of public play spaces.

for stopping and checking on the condition of Kitten. Unfortunately, Kitten did not survive. I am very grateful that the lady stopped. More motorists should abide by this example. Congratulations Staff SGT David Belavia for your medal for heroism. You made us proud. Not only for winning the Medal of Honor but additionally to your community service via radio show and support for local Veterans. As a Retired Veteran myself, you gave me “goose bumps” watching the presentation. Well done! I wanted to write a short note to express my appreciation for you and everything you do to help with There are so many liability reasons that they would not want to make it open to the public. Plus, there is the cost of upkeep. While town taxes go to paying to keep town playgrounds kept in working order, private donations go to keeping church playgrounds in working order.

You keep everyone safe, while moving traffic along to help those, like myself, get to work. You are always smiling and greeting the parents and students, even if it’s just with a friendly wave. You probably should have stopped, but I get it, you may be a high school kid and were scared. My neighbors have regularly let the dog roam our neighborhood for years. Their previous dogs as well. They were reported many times to the dog warden but continued to subject us to their dog’s urine and feces. People need to wake up and be responsible for their pets and be considerate to neighbors. I am just glad I didn’t see it happen.

BANISH MOSQUITOES FROM YOUR YARD Time spent in the backyard on spring and summer afternoons and evenings contributes heavily to the popularity of these times of year. Many homeowners go to great lengths to make their outdoor living spaces as luxurious as possible, only to be bothered by uninvited and bothersome guests: mosquitoes. Mosquitoes are not just pesky nuisances, but they’re also harmful. According to the American Mosquito Control Association, more than one million people across the globe die from mosquito-borne diseases every year. Such diseases include malaria, dengue, yellow fever, West Nile virus, and the Zika virus. The AMCA notes that many of the diseases transmitted by mosquitoes can be linked to travel to endemic areas. But mosquitoes in North America can still be harmful, and bites may result in severe skin irritation through an allergic reaction to mosquito saliva.

Dogs suffer from heat stroke when their body temperatures exceed 104 F and the built-in mechanisms they rely on to cool themselves - including panting - cease to function properly. But any temperature 103 F or above is considered abnormal. According to PetMD, heat stroke is a form of non-fever hyperthermia that can lead to multiple organ dysfunction.
