Prevent bugs, sap and other substances from ruining a vehicle Tree sap Although tree sap won’t cause immediate damage to vehicle paint, it should not be ignored. Over time, sap can become more difficult to remove, etch through the clear coat on the vehicle and cause discoloration. When the temperature is hot, damage from sap can accelerate. On windows and windshields, drivers may be able to gently remove dried sap with a razor blade. However, use cleaning products on more delicate paint. Automotive stores sell speciality sap and tar cleaners. Otherwise, you can try rubbing alcohol. It may take a few attempts to remove sap entirely.

Gardeners We are being overrun by boxelder bugs! There are no box elder trees nearby that I can find. However, the tree that has those “helicopters” hangs over my garage (not my tree). HOW TO PREP YOUR YARD FOR SUMMER PARTIES Protect your guests from insects. Insects like mosquitoes can quickly turn a swinging soiree into a nuisance, so purchase some decorative citronella candles to repel mosquitoes. Tiki torches along walkways and around the patio furniture may also prove effective insect repellants. In addition, if there are any areas around your property where water has gathered, such as bird fountains or puddles from recent rains, do your best to get rid of that water. Water attracts many insects, which lay their eggs in the standing water. The less standing water around your property, the less likely any uninvited insect guests are to appear.

REASONS TO PLANT A TREE There are plenty of reasons to plant trees. Trees provide a natural form of shade, reducing air temperature by blocking the sun’s rays. This can reduce reliance on air conditioning systems and make it more comfortable to spend time outdoors during the summer. North Carolina State University College of Agriculture & Life Sciences says trees absorb and block noise and reduce glare. They also can trap dust, pollen and smoke. Trees also absorb carbon dioxide and potentially harmful gasses from the air. One large tree can supply a day’s worth of oxygen for as many as four people, while also storing 13 pounds of carbon per year.

STAY SAFE WHEN GARDENING IN HOT WEATHER Take frequent breaks indoors or in shady areas. Limit marathon gardening sessions to spring and fall when the weather permits. When gardening in harsh summertime heat, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises gardeners to take frequent breaks. Head inside to air conditioned rooms, if necessary, or find shady areas to sit, relax and drink some water. Sitting in the shade will give the body’s thermostat a chance to recover from exposure to extreme heat.

RECOGNIZE POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS HOUSEHOLD CHEMICALS Air fresheners: These seemingly innocuous products may be doing more harm than good. Information published in a 2015 issue of The Journal of Toxicological Sciences linked air fresheners to volatile organic compounds, or VOCs. They also may contain ultra-fine particles of formaldehyde and phenol. In addition, National Geographic’s The Green Guide states that many air fresheners contain nerve-deadening chemicals that coat nasal passages and temporarily block one’s sense of smell. Many widely available air fresheners use phthalates, which are linked to hormonal and reproductive issues, birth defects and developmental disorders. In lieu of chemical air fresheners, spray diluted essential oils around the house.

Any New Treatments for Essential Tremor?

Well known & respected

Jeffrey A. Goldstein, M.D., F.A.C.G.

University of Rochester School of Medicine

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH

essential tremor. I have tried many medicines. Currently, I’m taking propranolol and primidone, but nothing seems to help. The only thing that stops the shaking is a glass of wine. I have inquired about a laser procedure, but I found out that it’s risky. An MRI was normal. I am 82 and in excellent health. I would like to know if there is anything new to help me. -- J.M. ANSWER: A lot of people have essential tremor -- 5 percent of people worldwide. It causes a noticeable tremor, usually of the hands and arms, but also may affect the head or other body parts. The severity is variable. Some people will be annoyed by symptoms, while others have real difficulty eating or writing. An expert sometimes is needed to confirm the diagnosis, as it can appear to be similar to Parkinson’s disease or other neurological conditions. However, improvement with alcohol is suggestive of essential tremor. Unfortunately, alcohol is not a good long-term treatment, as people build tolerance. Propranolol is a beta blocker, and primidone is an anti-epilepsy drug. They are the most common pharmacologic treatments for essential tremor. You probably have tried gabapentin and topiramate, two other anti-epilepsy drugs that work for some people but may have significant side effects. My first patient to go through ultrasound treatment for essential tremor did so a few months ago. This uses many focused ultrasound beams to heat an area of the brain called the thalamus, destroying the cells responsible for the tremor. This procedure is effective for most people, but it can have side effects, including weakness, gait disturbance and numbness. It is not clear how long the relief will last. It is an option for people whose symptoms are significantly interfering with their quality of life and who have not gotten good relief from medications. Medicare is starting to approve payment for the procedure, but it is not yet covered by most insurances. You can read more about ultrasound treatment for essential tremor at http://bit.ly/2FPFlf9. ***

E-CIGARETTES AS HARMFUL AS TOBACCO Not only can cigarette smoking lead to yellow and brown stains on teeth, but smokers are also more likely to produce bacterial plaque that leads to gum disease. And because smoking prevents oxygen from entering the blood stream, infected gums heal more slowly, resulting in inflammation and the likelihood of tooth loss worsening. While some may believe that e-cigarettes are a safer alternative to conventional cigarettes, new research shows that vaping subjects the oral environment to chemicals that pose as much of a health risk as cigarettes, if not more. E-cigarette liquids contain nicotine and other chemicals that damage cells in the mouth to the point where e-smokers are at a higher risk for

gum disease, tooth loss, and cancer. Breaking (or better yet, never starting) the smoking habit now can greatly reduce your risk of losing your teeth as well as increase your chances of enjoying good health in the future. One of the most important things BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL can provide you with is education. Teaching you good oral hygiene, however, is only the first part. The rest is up to you. We’ll help you keep an eye on your dental health beginning with a thorough oral exam. Call us at 585.343.4246 for an appointment at 6 Batavia City Centre. New patients are always welcome.

DEAR DR. ROACH: On three separate occasions, I experienced a very audible high-pitched sound in my left ear, and immediately, without other warning, fell to the floor. One time I injured myself enough to require treatment from the emergency room. These happen without warning. Do you have any insight on the sounds and the falls that follow? -- R.C. ANSWER: Two concerns come immediately to mind; one is serious, the other not. The first is a simple faint, also called “vasovagal syncope.” Occasionally a faint is preceded by a loud rushing sound, although it usually is experienced in both ears. It’s a warning sign to sit down immediately -- that often can prevent the faint from happening. However, nearly everybody with a faint has some lightheadedness, so I am not 100 percent sure of this possibility. The second possibility is both rarer and more concerning. The blood vessels in the back of the skull can be compressed or made abnormal due to tumors, abnormalities in the bone and aneurisms. Some of these can be associated with sudden loss of consciousness, often with no warning. This deserves an immediate evaluation from your regular doctor or a neurologist, perhaps even an MRI scan. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. This is a public service message, too. If you are, or know of, an elderly person or a disabled person who has to cross the road to get to their mail box, you can get the mailboxes moved so the resident won’t have to cross as long as the mail delivery vehicle can turn around in your driveway Even if I were to entertain your notion that there’s such a thing as climate change and that it’s human caused, the explicit irony in your post as it pertains to “children” and the future is what has me shaking my head. Literally every single one of this nation’s problems can be trickled down to overpopulation. Animals are being plumped up and slaughtered younger because supply has to meet demand. Less trees for oxygen, more Section 8 housing, more kids, more drivers, more pollution, more people, more garbage at overflowing landfills. Once we began to understand that the Earth has finite resources, we can actually begin to acknowledge the real problem. To the reader who claimed that it is “sad to see so many Americans who don’t know their own history,” GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

as to not back out on the street. You need to contact the residents’ personal care provider to get a note stating the reason why it is dangerous for the elderly or disabled person to cross the road. Take that to your local post office, and they will assess your driveway, then move the mailbox to the same side of the road so the elderly or disabled person won’t have to cross the road any longer. It is legal, but many people don’t know about it.

Thank you, Five Star Bank in Brockport. Everyone is always so nice when you go into the before going on to claim fictitious explanations for the Civil War: It is a shame that after more than 150 years, many people are still philosophically fighting the Civil War. Much of this extends to current politics and justification for unpopular beliefs. The writer of the post claimed that Northerners stole and “took over (Southern) farms by any means necessary, even murder.” Such expression of madeup history is a sad factor of today’s modern internet society where people can post outrageous lies without any accountability. The poster then went on to use this ill-informed claim as the justification for flying the Confederate Flag.

branch. I have only gone in perhaps three times, but when I did, they were cheerful, and a teller one time went above and beyond the call of duty to assist me. Also, Jon was very polite, efficient, and helpful when I called and spoke to him on Friday, June 28th. He helped me with my problem without me having to go in!

Kudos to the residents and staff members of the M.M. Ewing Continuing Care Center, Clark Meadows, Ferris Hills at West Lake and all of Canandaigua. On “The Longest Day,” a June 21st Alzheimer’s Association event to raise awareness out of session, there is a playground there. There is no need to do 50 miles an hour on these streets. Police are rarely there to see this happen. Some kind of blinking light should be installed so people know to slow down!

good thing. Take it to flea markets.

Every summer, there are some people who have these every weekend. It’s like a business. I wonder why these townships don’t do anything about this. It is a distraction, annoying to go around parked cars, etc. Once in a while is all right, but there are even people continually putting different cars out for sale almost every weekend. I wonder if you are supposed to have a permit to do this. Our town has a limit of two yard sales Please slow down in front per year. One has been at a of the schools. Many busy intersection every year people speed down the almost every weekend. I street by the intermediate think it’s a distraction to those school. Even if school is who are driving and not a

and funding, the senior living locations used their fitness centers for NuStep marathons, with sign-up sheets so the recumbent exercise machines were in use all day. Those who “stepped up” collectively surpassed 100,000 steps, also raising money for the cause. In addition, Ferris Hills hosted a pancake breakfast to raise even more money, which will go toward the UR Medicine Thompson Health Senior Living Team’s contribution to the Walk to End Alzheimer’s, to be held this October in Canandaigua.

I am going to have a yard sale, but if it will be like the last one I had years ago, I’d almost rather not. Three women came and murmured and complained about prices, though I paid a lot more for the new and nearly new things I put out. I mostly sold for half what I paid or even less. You are on my turf, my land. One lady even spun gravel in my driveway because she was unhappy that I wouldn’t sell my car mats really cheaply. People were rude. I did not say anything back to them, but I was shaking. If you are at my place, treat me with respect. Next time, I will politely tell you to put the things down and exit.

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Technology snafus tax your patience. But before you throw that computer or other hardware into the trash, take a deep breath and call someone knowledgeable for help. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Don’t be too upset if your generosity goes unappreciated. These things happen, and rather than brood over it, move on. A new friend could open up some exciting new possibilities. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A loved one helps you get through an especially difficult emotional situation. Spend the weekend immersed in the body and soul restorative powers of music and the other arts. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) You are pretty much in charge of what you want to do this week. However, it might be a good idea to keep an open mind regarding suggestions from people you know you can trust. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Another chance to shine (something always dear to the Lion’s heart) might be resented by others. But you earned it, so enjoy it. The weekend brings news about a family member. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A suggestion that never took off could become viable again. Dust it off, update it if necessary, and resubmit it. In your personal life, a new relationship takes an “interesting” turn. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Confronting a new challenge to your stated position could work to your advantage by settling all doubts once you’re able to present a solid defense backed up by equally solid facts. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) You enjoy doing nice things for others. But this is a good time to do something nice for yourself as well. You might want to start by planning a super-special getaway weekend. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Some changes you feel you need to make might be reasonable and appropriate. But others might lead to new problems. Think things through carefully before you act. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Good instincts usually keep the sure-footed Goat on the right path. So, what others might see as stubbornness on your part, in fact reflects your good sense of what is worth supporting. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A period of introspection could lead to some surprising conclusions -- and also equally surprising changes -- involving a number of your long-held positions on several issues. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) The financially practical Pisces might want to take a sensible approach to spending as well as investing. Being prudent now pays off later. A romantic situation moves into another phase. BORN THIS WEEK: Your sense of curiosity keeps you continually alert for what’s new about people, places and things.

Young Girls Race Towards Health with Endlessly Outdoors By Amanda Dudek

P

hysical Education teacher, Brianne Blaszak is a dedicated educator and runner. These twin passions motivated Blaszak to start Endlessly Outdoors Company (EOC), a company that brings communities together one adventure at a time and includes the Young With Miles To Go program (YWMTG) that trains adolescent girls to run well. Now, in its second official year, EOC continues to impact teens for the better, and several of its young ladies took part in the Oatka 5k on Saturday, July 13th. “I teach teens,” said Brianne. “They’re at a crucial age. I saw a gap between teaching and getting the kids outside to reconnect with their parents and their community. I started YWMTG to get these girls running and fill this gap.” Blaszak hopes this group will help girls get through those critical years. When Blaszak was coaching soccer in LeRoy last fall, a couple of her players took an interest in running. These girls, YWMTG charter members, went from not running to completing the Evl 5k in October. “We also worked a lot on team building and nutrition, the healthy components of running and the benefits of it,” she said. By the end of this past March, Blaszak had 11 girls from LeRoy join her running group. Two businesses sponsored them. “Those girls ran the Happy Half 5k in Ellicottville this past May. Two more girls ran the Oatka 5k this month.” EOC will started another session in Warsaw this week, and that group of girls will run the Oak Tree 5k in Geneseo in September. Blaszak purposefully chooses local races to highlight them. “We also do a mock 5k and prep for the actual race,” she said. “We have families and the community come out and cheer for them, bringing communities together.” LeRoy and Warsaw have embraced EOC. “They are really on board, and they think it is a wonderful idea. When they see us running around town, they step out to cheer us on and ask how our training is going.” There is more to the program than running. “On some nights, we learn the basics of using a compass or we go geocaching along local community Park Trails,” said Blaszak. “It’s fun and it’s included in the program. It shows the young ladies that running can truly show you the beauty of a community” EOC also includes Scavenger Hunt night as part of the YWMTG program. “I ask the girls to put the signs they have made in businesses and yards,” said Blaszak. “Then the girls run around and take photos with the signs. It is our way of supporting local businesses.” EOC girls also learn the value of developing solid relationships. “The girls have to get outside of their comfort zone,” explained Brianne. “A lot of girls come to the realization that if lo they truly have a support system, they th can believe in themselves and achieve ca this goal. When they first start, they th think, “I can’t run for 5 minutes, so how th am I going to run 3 miles?” Then they discover that if they have an amazing di support system which believes in them, su they can believe in themselves, too.” th There is also a positive social impact. “Many girls said they loved our running “M group because they made friends with the gr girls they didn’t think they could,” shared gi Blaszak. Noting that even adults struggle Bl with weight and body issues, EOC offers wi the same program for adults, includth ing a free, weekly running and walking in group typically held on the Castile side gr

of Letchworth State Park. People are free to join and run at their own pace. “We also provide emotional support,” said Blaszak. “The mother of one of our runners was diagnosed with cancer, and her daughter kept on running. The group helped her focus on questions like, What do you want to do with your life? and Do you want to show how brave you are through running? “YWMTG connects what they need with this positive outlet,” Blaszak added. EOC also receives a lot of positive feedback from the runners’ families. “They say, “Thank you.” “They love what we are doing and that their girls are outside.” Some families have even thanked Blaszak for being such a good role model. “I didn’t set out to do that,” Blaszak blushed. “I just love running, and it has helped me through a lot of things in my personal life. Like Blaszak, EOC girls know running will always be there for them when they need it. Blaszak encourages girls considering joining Endlessly Outdoors Company’s YWMTG Program to “realize this gives you a lifetime fitness activity you can do regardless of your ability. Whether reaching your goal takes 5 weeks, 10 weeks, 5 years or 10 years, you can do it, and when you do, celebrate big!” For more information, visit www.endlesslyo u t d o o r s c o m p a n y. c o m . A turtle is most safe when all of him is tucked into his shell, but he makes no progress until he sticks his neck out. There is always some hazard in everything we do. If we get up in the morning, we may slip in the shower and break a leg. If we never get out of bed, we may develop bedsores. Life is a constant succession of risk-taking activities. We should not let this dismay us. We should do everything possible to minimize the risks, then go ahead, if we expect to make any progress. Let us explain the advantages of making one’s own funeral arrangements well in advance of need. Phone for an appointment in our office or in the privacy of your own home, if you prefer.

BANISH MOSQUITOES FROM YOUR YARD (Family Features) Families are alw ays looking for w ays to enjoy vacation time together that maximizes fun, w hile minimizing the budget. To help your family reduce costs on summer travel: Be flexible. Keep in mind the highest rates for hotels and entertainment stops are typically on w eekends. Puzzle Answers This Week

Time spent in the backyard on spring and summer afternoons and evenings contributes heavily to the popularity of these times of year. Many homeowners go to great lengths to make their outdoor living spaces as luxurious as possible, only to be bothered by uninvited and bothersome guests: mosquitoes. Mosquitoes are not just pesky nuisances, but they’re also harmful. According to the American Mosquito Control Association, more than one million people across the globe die from mosquito-borne diseases every year. Such diseases include malaria, dengue, yellow fever, West Nile virus, and the Zika virus. The AMCA notes that many of the diseases transmitted by mosquitoes can be linked to travel to endemic areas. But mosquitoes in North America can still be harmful, and bites may result in severe skin irritation through an allergic reaction to mosquito saliva.

Atrial fibrillation is the most common type of arrhythmia, w hich is a problem w ith the rate or rhythm of the heartbeat during w hich the heart can beat too fast, too slow or w ith an irregular rhythm. Atrial fibrillation, or AF, occurs w hen rapid, disorganized electrical signals cause the atria, w hich consists of the heart’s tw o upper chambers, to contract very fast and irregularly. According to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, w hen a person is suffering from AF, blood begins to pool in his or her atria. W hile that blood pools in the atria, it is not being pumped completely into the heart’s tw o low er chambers, and this prevents the low er and upper chambers from w orking together effectively. Though AF does not alw ays produce noticeable symptoms, some people w ith AF experience chest pain or heart failure, especially w hen the heart rhythm is rapid. AF can increase a person’s risk of stroke, and it may surface periodically or become an ongoing problem that lasts for years.

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel

How To Never Miss A Day Of Your Medication (NAPS)—Most people can’t go a day without a cup of coffee or checking their e-mail. But with the demands of everyday life it’s not surprising that about 50 percent of patients sometimes fail to take their daily medications as prescribed. According to a new survey by WebMD, over the past six months one-third of respondents either sometimes or most of the time missed taking their medication as prescribed even though 76 percent know it can cause their condition to worsen or symptoms to return. When asked why they’d missed a dose, 66 percent of survey respondents said that they forgot, 38 percent said they experienced side effects, and 26 percent weren’t able to get to the pharmacy to refill their prescription on time. “Not following a prescription correctly can seriously impact your health,” said Jamal Downer, a Walgreens pharmacist. “Your local pharmacist is an expert who can help you understand your medications and provide tips on how to use tools like smartphone apps that make it easier and more convenient to stay on track.” Steps to help you take your medications include services online, through apps and in store: • Getting help whenever you need it: A pharmacist is an integral part of your support team, and now they are available anytime via phone. Walgreens Pharmacy Chat service provides 24/7 access to pharmacists who can answer questions to help you better understand your medications, including side effects and how the other medicines you take and food you eat may interact with another drug. • Setting reminders: Whether you need a quick prompt to take your pill or a text alert that your refill is available, calendar notifications and free tools like a pill reminder can help ensure you always have your medication on hand. • Simplifying your refills: Pharmacists can also coordinate your prescription refills to a single pickup date with the Save a Trip Refills® program for free. Refilling your prescription can be made more convenient by switching to a 90-day supply or setting up automatic refills. • Making refills convenient: Just like you can order purchases online from your phone, you can have refills shipped directly to your home. With Walgreens Express™, patients can prepay and pick up prescriptions in a dedicated line or get their eligible medications delivered. From pill reminders to tools for conveniently managing your condition, the answer to improved health and saving money could be in the palm of your hand. Download the Walgreens app or ask your local pharmacist how they can help you stay on track with your medications. For further information, go to http://bit.ly/redphone-wakeup. On July 26, 1775, the U.S. postal system is established by the Second Continental Congress, with Benjamin Franklin as its first postmaster general. Franklin set up more efficient colonial routes and standardized delivery costs based on distance and weight. On July 22, 1933, American Wiley Post returns to Floyd Bennett Field in New York, becoming the first aviator to fly solo around the world. Piloting a Lockheed Vega monoplane named the Winnie May, he circled the globe in 7 days, 18 hours and 49 minutes. On July 27, 1949, the world's first jet-propelled airliner, the British De Havilland Comet, makes its maiden testflight in England. The jet engine would revolutionize the airline industry, shrinking air travel time in half. On July 24, 1959, during the grand opening ceremony of the American National Exhibition in Moscow, Vice President Richard Nixon and Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev engage in a heated debate in a model kitchen set up for the fair. The "kitchen debate" became one of the most famous episodes of the Cold War.

DID YOU KNOW? Wedding insurance can provide couples who are about to tie the knot with some peace of mind on their big days. Many wedding venues require couples carry liability coverage in the case of accidents, injuries or incidents. But wedding insurance policies may even surprise couples with regard to what they cover. Each policy is different, and couples may be able to customize wedding insurance policies to cover a host of items. Many policies cover couples in the wake of cancellations or postponements due to weather, damage to the facility or even a change of heart on the part of the couple holding the policy. But some policies may provide coverage for couples should their photographers and/or caterers fail to appear. Policies may also cover lost, stolen or damaged items, including equipment rentals, bridal growns, jewelry, and/or gifts. Couples should speak with their wedding venue representative to determine if the venue offers extended coverage and ultimately compare those offerings to policy estimates they receive on their own.

After being stagnant in a collector role with my previous company for over 6 years I was finally able to advance my career with Coast. BOOST ENERGY AT THE OFFICE Make sure you’re getting enough sleep. Failing to get adequate sleep can have an adverse impact on your career. According to the Division of Sleep Medicine at Harvard Medical School, failure to get enough sleep, even for just one night, can impair a person’s ability to function by affecting his or her ability to focus and access high-level cognitive functions. A panel of experts from sleep, anatomy and physiology, as well as pediatrics, neurology, gerontology and gynecology convened by the National Sleep Foundation in 2015 recommended adults between the ages of 26 and 64 get between seven and nine hours of sleep per night. Make a concerted effort to get more sleep if you’re falling short of those recommended guidelines.

The Canadian Nurses’ Association, formerly the Canadian National Association of Trained Nurses, was developed in 1907.
