GREAT WEDDING GIFT IDEAS Airline miles: Though it might be unconventional, gifting airline miles to the happy couple may save them hundreds of dollars. Men and women with ample airline miles should determine if their agreement allows them to transfer those miles to a loved one. If so, transferring the miles won’t cost the person doing the gifting any money out of pocket, but it can save couples substantial amounts of money on their next trip, including their honeymoon if they have yet to book one.

“You’re Leaving?” Supporting your Furry Friends when You Return to Work By Amanda Dudek s Finger Lakes Region businesses continue through the phases of reopening, many pet owners who have been working from home are or soon will be returning to their places of employment. While humans are sure to miss their fourleggedóor wingedócompanions, they experience the process differently, understanding what is happening and why, while their furry or feathered friends may not. Taking steps to prevent your pet from experiencing anxiety, recognizing the signs if anxiety does occur and knowing how to help your pet adjust will help you have peace of mind when returning to work. Prevention: It’s All about Planning! Most pets feel calm and comfortable when they know what to expect. If you know the routine to which you will most likely be returning, you can begin taking steps to make your furry friendís transition easier. Plan these routines around the schedule you will have when you return to work and adjust your pet to the new routine gradually. • Feed your pet and the same time and place every day. • Many animals, like dogs, require at least 20-30 minutes of daily exercise to reduce boredom and maintain a healthy body weight, so plan a walk and playtime at the same time each day. • Find alternatives to leaving your pet chained outside or indoors penned, crated and isolated for long hours. • Continue training your pet, as knowing what to do can help prevent stress, as well.

A

appetite changes, isolation, digestive issues, lethargy, and increased sleeping. Stress-Busting Solutions for your Pet • Encourage independent play to reinforce the lesson that your pet will have to busy itself with toys from time to time. • Many dog-related problems result from ill-established leadership roles in a house. Constantly reinforce your role as pack leader as knowing the pack order can relieve some canine stress. • Exercise may help reduce anxiety, and exercise, discipline and then affection are the common mantras of dog trainers. • Don’t make a fuss when coming or going. Be calm and consistent, and only reward desirable behavior. • Provide comforting items, like worn clothes that smell like you. • Consider employing a dog walker or a pet sitter for less strain and stress on your pet as well as increased exercise opportunities. • Take another look at pet daycares! This care option can reduce boredom, improve pet socialization, increase exercise, help your pet relax and develop a more well-rounded temperament, and many locations have flexible care plans. • Talk to a vet if separation anxiety has gotten out of control. Temporary administering of a sedative may help pets and their owners as the dogs continues to be trained. Pet parents should be aware that there can be a transitional period as pets acclimate to their new routines. Housetraining regression as well as other undesirable behaviors may occur, requiring some retraining and rule reinforcement. As many pet owners will emphatically confirm, evidence suggests that animals such as cats and dogs experience emotions, so be extra patient and loving towards your furry companions as they adjust to your absence.

Recognizing Signs of Stress Research indicates that stress, especially constant sources of stress, can impact pet health and well-being. Animals experience stress for different reasons and exhibit stress in ways that set them apart from one another and their human companions. The following is a breakdown of what may contribute to stress in birds, cats and dogs. • Birds: It can be challenging to determine what is causing stress in birds. However, the appearance of stress bars on feathers, the sudden onset of aggression, fearful behavior, changes in appetite, and destructive behavior can indicate that stress is present. • Cats: Cats can become stressed over situations their owners may not consider major. Some of the easiest stress symptoms to spot include excessive self-grooming, urine spraying, aggression, extreme vocalization, and eliminating outside of the litter box. • Dogs: The British Small Animal Veterinary Association’s “Manual of Canine and Feline Behavioural Medicine” says that some of the most common dog stress triggers are novelty, housing changes, loud noises, changes in household members, and changes in schedule. Dogs may exhibit stress through

DID YOU KNOW? Prospective real estate investors who hope to buy, hold and rent out their investment properties should first interview potential property managers before buying homes. While it’s possible to find property managers willing to manage single-family homes or duplexes, the financial resource Bankrate.com notes that many property managers prefer to manage large apartment complexes instead. Managing properties is hard work, and without skilled property managers on their side, real estate investors may become overwhelmed by the responsibilities of taking care of their real estate investments while simultaneously trying to maintain their own residences. Before buying investment properties, prospective real estate investors should interview various local property managers or property management firms, inquiring about their fees and what is included in those fees. If the cost of hiring property managers drastically cuts into the profits investors hoped to make off their investment properties, they might be better off looking to invest their money in areas other than real estate. Prospective investors can compare the potential return on investment after the cost of property managers has been factored in to the return they might get from more traditional investments to determine if investing in real estate is a sound financial decision.

Sprayed by a Skunk!

HILTON 7 Upton Street Sun., Aug. 2nd, 12 noon Preview (10am) WAREHOUSE TOOL AUCTION hosted by Village Auction See photos at Village Auction website.

PAW'S CORNER

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: We were camping this weekend, and on our last day in the woods my dog “Jumper” had a run-in with a skunk. He is really rank. I tried washing him off in the lake, but it didn’t seem to help the smell at all. We had to drive home with this incredibly bad smell permeating the car. Jumper smells almost as bad today as he did on Sunday. How can I get rid of the odor? -- Rick in Burlington, Vermont DEAR RICK: That odor really lingers! Good job trying to wash Jumper’s coat in the lake as soon as possible; that may have helped a little bit. You’ll have to use a bit of chemistry to remove the oily skunk spray. Tomato juice is recommended by many people, and it does have some effect because it’s a little bit acidic and can break up some of the oils. Its aroma also helps mask the skunk scent, at least temporarily. Another cleaning recipe, found on American Kennel Club’s website (www.AKC. org), mixes baking soda with mild detergent and household hydrogen peroxide (3% strength). The foaming mixture can be worked into your dog’s coat, left on for about five minutes and then rinsed away. With any solution or recipe you use, be careful to not let it get into Jumper’s eyes, ears or nose. Many of the ingredients are irritants that can cause a lot of discomfort. Deodorizing your car will take some extra effort. You can gently clean the upholstery, floor mats and headliner with a cloth dipped in a solution of water and baking soda. The baking soda will dry to a haze and needs to be vacuumed off. Follow up with a shampoo formulated for car interiors.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

A Healthy Diet Includes Omega-3 and Omega-6 --DEAR DR. ROACH: It seems that eating a healthy diet with an emphasis on nuts and seeds, fruits, vegetables and grains is the best choice for anyone. It’s been well-documented that omega-6 is inflammatory, whereas foods containing omega-3 are not. It seems to me that we should be consuming foods that have more omega-3 in them. The only problem is that, from my research, all nuts and seeds with the exception of chia and flaxseeds have a much higher ratio of the omega-6 to the omega-3. This appears to be the case with most foods, no matter which food group they are in. How can any of the healthy foods be beneficial when so much more of the “bad fats” are being ingested? -- Anon. ANSWER: Dietary fats are categorized into four groups: monounsaturated, polyunsaturated, saturated and trans-saturated. It is accepted that monounsaturated fats have a healthy effect, reducing heart disease risk, while trans-saturated fats are clearly harmful. The effect of saturated fats on health is mixed, but those that come from processed meat increase heart disease and diabetes risk. Saturated fat overall has little effect on heart disease risk, but swapping saturated fat with unsaturated fats (both polyunsaturated and monounsaturated) appears to reduce heart disease risk. Polyunsaturated fats are categorized into the omega-3 family and the omega-6 family. I also have read in many places that omega-6 fats are “bad fats,” causing inflammation. The best evidence, a 2014 review of all controlled trials published, showed that omega-6 fats are NOT inflammatory and that they DECREASE risk of heart disease compared with meat-based saturated fats. We should be consuming both omega-3 and omega-6 polyunsaturated fats, mostly from plant sources. The data support that nuts and seeds are foods we should be eating more of, but we also should be eating good sources of omega-3, including fatty fish, the chia and flaxseeds you mentioned, as well as walnuts and canola oil. Most people have to work harder to get omega-3 oils but get plenty of omega-6. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have recently started transitioning to a plant-based diet for preventative health reasons. While discussing the benefits of nuts and seeds with a dietitian, they had a disclaimer that flax seed can interfere with medications and to eat them two hours before or one hour after taking medications. I would not sit down and eat a handful of flax seeds, but now I am afraid to use them in the meals I prepare at all. Can you help me make a good decision in using them? -- J.E. ANSWER: For people eating reasonable amounts (like a handful or two) of flax seeds as part of a meal, it is unlikely that they would interfere with medications enough to cause any significant problem, for most medications. There are two situations that might merit concern: In powerful anti-clotting agents, such as clopidogrel, flax seeds might prompt increased activity. Secondly, flax seeds may lower blood sugar a small amount. In combination with insulin or oral diabetes drugs, the blood sugar could possibly dip lower than expected. I doubt either of these interactions is likely to cause harm, but it is reasonable to discuss with your doctor if you are on one of the classes of medications mentioned. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. BANISH MOSQUITOES FROM YOUR YARD Time spent in the backyard on spring and summer afternoons and evenings contributes heavily to the popularity of these times of year. Many homeowners go to great lengths to make their outdoor living spaces as luxurious as possible, only to be bothered by uninvited and bothersome guests: mosquitoes. Mosquitoes are not just pesky nuisances, but they’re also harmful. According to the American Mosquito Control Association, more than one million people across the globe die from mosquito-borne diseases every year. Such diseases include malaria, dengue, yellow fever, West Nile virus, and the Zika virus. The AMCA notes that many of the diseases transmitted by mosquitoes can be linked to travel to endemic areas. But mosquitoes in North America can still be harmful, and bites may result in severe skin irritation through an allergic reaction to mosquito saliva.

TECH TO TAKE ALONG ON YOUR NEXT ROAD TRIP Navigation system: Many vehicles are now equipped with built-in navigation systems. But drivers whose vehicles are older or not equipped with such technology should consider purchasing one before embarking on trips. Though some travelers may feel navigation systems go against the adventurous spirit of road trips, it’s easy to get lost on the open road, especially in an era when many people have grown accustomed to roundthe-clock access to information, including maps, on their smartphones. Even if you have no set itinerary in mind, a navigation system can ensure you spend more time enjoying the open road and less time trying to figure out just where you are at any given moment.

What is the best product to grow grass? If I remove some tree roots that are poking through the ground will that kill the tree? Laurie O. There are numerous grass seeds and seed blends available in a wide range of prices. A Northeast blend is best for our area. In our northern cool-humid region, lawn grass must be perennial, winter hardy, able to withstand frequent mowing, and relatively disease free. A typical lawn mixture might be something like 65% Kentucky bluegrass, 20% fine leaf fescue, 15% perennial ryegrass. This type of blend is more expensive than seed that is all or primarily ryegrass. Kentucky bluegrass is the predominant high-quality lawn grass for our climate. It is the best species for full sun, it forms good sod because it

spreads with rhizomes (underground lateral stems), and can withstand frequent mowing and foot traffic. It takes about 2 weeks to germinate and 6-8 weeks to produce dense sod. Perennial ryegrass is a popular component of grass seed mixtures because it germinates quickly, often in 2-4 days, providing a uniform lawn in about 2 weeks. Fine-leaf fescues are well adapted to infertile or acidic soil and can tolerate shaded conditions, but cannot withstand heavy traffic. Therefore, a blend provides the best qualities of each variety for an all-purpose lawn grass. Follow directions on the seed bag for seeding process and rates (lbs/1000 sq ft). The hot dry summertime is not the optimum time for grass seeding, but if you must, then mulch with straw and water (sprinkler works best) daily. When you begin mowing, leave clippings on the lawn for the nutrients

they provide. Fertilize in the fall with a sure that the tree remains stable and fertilizer that has a high percentage of healthy before taking out more. The fewer above ground roots you remove, slow release nitrogen. If tree roots are causing disruption in the less likely you are to damage the your lawn, it is okay to prune a few tree. small roots away, but care must be taken not to injure the tree. Do not cut away any root that is more than 2 inches in diameter. A rule of thumb is to measure the diameter of the tree about 4 ft up from the ground and prune out only roots that are 3-5 times that distance away from the trunk (2í trunk diameter, go out 6-10í to take out above ground roots). Never take out more than 20% of the roots showing, then wait a year or two to be

It would be easier and less potentially damaging to mulch. Use a 3-4 inch layer of mulch around such trees with exposed roots that make mowing more difficult. Do not form a “volcano” of mulch which seems to be too popular in the landscape and can do severe damage to the tree.

SAFETY IN AND AROUND THE POOL

Big or Small, We Rent Them All.

Create barriers. Preventing accidental drowning means removing easy access to pools. Pools should be surrounded by secure fencing with an automatically latching gate. Fences should not be accessible by climbing. Extra precautions like installing a safety cover on inground pools and removing or securing ladders when the pool is not in use can help as well.

PAINTING/PAPERING

ROOFING & SIDING

MAINTAIN SPARKLING CLEAR POOL WATER Nearly every pool owner has had to deal with algae at some point in his or her life. One of the best ways to minimize algae spores in the pool besides high-sanitation levels is through routine brushing and vacuuming. According to Leslie’s Pool Supplies, pool walls, floors and steps are the most common places to find algae in a pool. If left untreated, algae can burrow their roots inside the cracks on these surfaces, making them very difficult to remove. That’s why weekly (or more frequent) brushing and vacuuming can help keep surfaces clean and algae-free. Vacuuming also helps remove debris that has fallen into the water and sunk, which can decompose and contribute to water cloudiness.

WALKING Just want to say thank you to the kind, considerate, and unselfish drivers who slow down a little bit and move over a little bit as you drive by us while we are walking along the edge of a country road where there are no sidewalks to use. To all the other drivers, it would not kill you to slow down a little bit and move over a little bit When you drive by us walking because it could kill us.

IRRESPONSIBLE Teenagers really need to be more cautious at nighttime, especially around midnight. I’ve been seeing teenagers walking around and riding skateboards at nighttime, especially around 12:30-1 o’clock at night without any reflective gear or flashlights. They are wearing dark clothing, and drivers cannot see them. People who are driving may not see them due to the teenagers’ irresponsibility. Parents shouldn’t be allowing their teenagers to be out this late. Both teenagers and parents should be more responsible. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

HABITAT VOLUNTEERS Thank you to all the volunteers for Habitat for Humanity of Livingston County for coming out last Saturday. You generously gave of your time and talents to build a basement for the home that already means so much to my children and I. We are so incredibly grateful. May God bless you all!

THANK YOU ROCK STARS To the individuals leaving beautiful painted rocks with positive quotes around the local parks. They are so fun to find and to place someplace else for someone else to find.

CEMETERY UPKEEP I cannot believe the way the [local] Cemetery looks. There were not any American flags at the gravesides of service men and women for the Memorial Day holiday. The lawn needs to be mowed and weed wacked, the flowers trash bin needs to be emptied, and the American Flag at the entrance of the cemetery is worn and tattered. It is just sad; it is a beautiful cemetery. I am not sure if there is a group who does this, or is it volunteer? If it is volunteer, then maybe more volunteers are needed, if you did need more volunteers, maybe post something looking for help.

WHAT A GIFT!Ê What a generous gift!! Thank you to the woman at Wegmans Geneseo who paid for my son’s groceries when he was short of money...no questions asked.

PAINTED TRASH IS TRASH Painted rocks are trash and litter. If you like them, fine, but keep them in your own yard, not in public places. STOLEN SOLAR HYDRANGEA This is a time when everyone should be thankful for what they have. I work very hard for everything that I have. I enjoy gardening and my yard. I am select when I choose any decorations for my yard. I take great pride in how my yard looks at night. I have many solar lights, that brighten up my yard. I bought an expensive, unique, beautiful purple hydrangea that was solar and had very pretty lights. Why did someone feel the need to steal from my backyard? First of all, who is creeping in my backyard? That is

The lights are for me to enjoy, not you! You are a thief, and you disgust me. I hope you enjoy my light. Don’t forget, karma will get you when you least expect it! WHY LOOK AT COLOR? A person matters because God loves them, and they matter to Him. We just need to acknowledge God more, and each of us will feel like we indeed do matter to Him. It sounds simplistic, but why make it complicated? Have the faith of a child to know God is good and live like God matters to you. Treat others the way you want to be treated. It isn’t about what you look like on the outside, but what your heart looks like on the inside. Be brief yet effective A concise design is key. Many recruiters spend little to no time reviewing the hordes of résumés they receive. In fact, automated résumé bots may initially screen the documents to thin the crowd. According to data from the 12th annual Mystery Job Candidate survey by CareerXRoads, the average recruiter spends six seconds looking at a résumé. If a résumé is lengthy or doesn’t attract attention, it will likely be ignored. Stick to a single-page and make sure wording is brief but meaty.

WORKING PARENTS CAN CREATE BETTER WORK-LIFE BALANCE Request changes to work schedules. While technology may have largely eliminated the separation between the office and home, working parents can use that to their advantage by asking their employees to alter their work schedules. Telecommuting one or two days a week can help parents feel more connected to their families, while flex schedules can ensure working parents don’t miss any of their children’s dance recitals or weekday afternoon ballgames.

Gift giving in the workplace can be challenging territory to navigate. And as anyone who has received an inappropriate gift or something that really wasn’t useful can attest, he or she probably doesn’t want to face a situation in which a gift leads to office gossip. According to a poll conducted by Harris, around half of workers plan to gift at least one business associate around the holidays but are confused about what to give. Too often it’s up to workers to navigate these etiquette minefields on their own, but the following tips can help the process go smoothly. Keep it impersonal. Impersonal doesn’t mean it’s acceptable to grab anything off the shelf. But the gift should not be something that would offend tastes or sentiments. Avoid clothing, perfume, jewelry, or accessories. Lotions and other scented items are also ill-advised. Skip your boss. Etiquette experts say that gifts should flow downward not upward in the realm of employment ranking. That means it’s best to stick with gifting colleagues who are on the same level as you. Buying a gift for the boss may look like you’re simply trying to score brownie points instead of offering a meaningful gift. Give group gifts. Rather than gifting individuals, it can be safer to give a group gift from which many can benefit. This can include coffee and pastries from a nearby bakery, or a bouquet of flowers to brighten up the office environment. Keep prices modest. Office giving is not about illustrating who can afford the most expensive gift. Remember, some people will not be able to reciprocate, and they shouldn’t feel uncomfortable for being on the receiving end of a lavish gift. Follow the rules. Gift exchanges should be cleared with supervisors or human resources professionals. It pays to check if there are rules in place for gifting others. Avoid cash gifts. Giving cash or checks is not a good idea. Money should only come by way of bonuses from higher-ups. If you’re stuck on what to give, a gift card to a store that a coworker visits is acceptable.
