HEALTH BENEFITS OF AVOCADOS Avocados can promote healthier bones. Because they’re high in vitamin K, a nutrient that is crucial for bone health, avocados may help reduce a person’s risk of developing osteoporosis, a condition characterized by bones becoming fragile and brittle due to loss of tissue. Vitamin K may help improve the intestinal absorption of calcium. That’s a significant benefit, as calcium deficiency has long been associated with a greater risk for osteoporosis.

I always have great rhubarb. I take good care of it. This year it won’t fill out. It’s mostly tall & spindly. Could it be this bad spring? -Ed S. The most likely reason why your rhubarb is tall and spindly is that it is overcrowded and needs to be divided. It should be divided after about 5 years of growth. The best time to divide is in the early spring, but it can be done in the fall. Dig around the root clump and lift the entire plant. Cut down through the crown between buds, with each division having at least one bud and prefer-

Plant at same depth as the original plant was growing. Another possibility is that due to the very wet spring, if your drainage is poor, your rhubarb may be experiencing crown rot. It damages terminal buds and results in spindly, weak stems. The plant will eventually collapse.
Can peonies be divided, or should they be moved as a whole plant? – Donna Y.
Palmiter’s Garden Nursery in Avon specializes in peonies and can provide information and advice about these beautiful plants.
Peonies really do not like to have their roots disturbed, but if you must move of divide them, the best time to do so is in the fall – September or October. Once divided or moved, they may take two or three years to settle in before they bloom again.

(NAPSI)—The next time you find yourself kicking your leg out of the side of your blankets to cool off or turning your pillow over because it’s too hot— you won’t be alone. Some 50 million Americans are affected by intermittent sleep problems, potentially created by bedding choices, according to the National Sleep Foundation—but you don’t have to be. Not many people realize it, but surrounding yourself with breathable fabrics while you sleep is essential for a restful night. Airflow matters because it lets heat naturally dissipate away from your body and helps keep your temperature regulated. Overheating can lead to a night of tossing and turning, leaving you groggy the next day because you didn’t recover properly the night before. What To Do So what’s the solution? It’s possible to get more out of each day by enhancing your sleep environment. There are options that can cater to your individual sleep position, body frame and temperature to help you maximize recovery at night.
Wishing You A FANTASTIC 4TH OF JULY!

Consider these facts and tips for a better night’s sleep: 1. There are 24 vertebrae in your back, eight of which are supported by a pillow and the rest by your mattress. Therefore, while you’re sleeping, 30 percent of your comfort comes from your pillow and 70 percent comes from your mattress. This is why it’s important to have the right fit of sleep equipment that supports your body’s needs. 2. Get personalized. It’s true that one size doesn’t fit all—especially when it comes to your bedding. You might want to check out Bedgear, which offers a personalized Performance Sleep System and a Pillow ID fitting process, used by professional sports teams such as the Boston Celtics and Dallas Mavericks. The process is designed to fit people with individualized products for the best sleep every night. 3. Spend the last hour before bed away from electronics. Taking some time to relax and unwind calms your body and helps your brain transition more easily into deep sleep. At the same time, you’re removing artificial sources of the blue light found in electronic devices that activates your brain to stay awake and can disrupt sleep. Personalization, coupled with fabric technologies that are engineered to promote airflow and assist with temperature regulation, can ensure that your sleep environment is optimized for the best rest. DID YOU KNOW? Children have long been drawn to expressing themselves through art. According to developmental experts, coloring stimulates creativity, contributes to better handwriting, teaches color recognition, and can promote hand-eye coordination. Coloring books can help children learn to recognize boundaries and structure and develop spacial awareness. Adults, too, have recognized the benefits that coloring can bring, which includes stress reduction and improved focus. Crayons have long been a favorite tool for coloring, and over the years certain colors have emerged as fan favorites. Crayola® conducted polls in 1993 and 2000 to find out the most popular colors of crayons in America. Blue was voted the favorite both times. Six other shades of blue, including cerulean, midnight blue, aquamarine, periwinkle, denim and blizzard blue, finished among the top 10. Purple heart, caribbean green and cerise rounded out the top 10.

SALOME’S STARS ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Your Aries leadership qualities can help bring order out of all that confusion, whether it’s on the job or in the home. But be careful to guide, not goad, others into following you. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Applying a more personal view to a job-linked issue could help provide better insight into those persistent problems. Use your keen Taurean logic to cut through the double-talk. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Taking some time off could be the best way to get through that seemingly endless round of demands. You’ll return refreshed and ready to tackle things from a new perspective. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Restoring a sagging professional relationship takes a lot of effort. By all means, state your position. But also make sure you pay close attention to the other person’s point of view. LEO (July 23 to August 22) A hot prospect intrigues the Big Cat, who is always on the prowl for a promising investment. But be careful that this “promise” has a chance of being kept. Check it out more carefully. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A friend could use some of your compassion and concern. If he or she doesn’t ask for help, be sure you step up and make the first move. Also, check out a new career possibility. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) You might have difficulty getting your opinions heard because of all the noise being made by the other side. But hang in there. Others should line up with you once they learn the facts. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Offering to help a colleague is commendable. But before you commit your time and effort, check to see if that person’s situation is all that he or she has led you to believe it is. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) You soon should be seeing positive results from your recent efforts on behalf of a family member. On another matter, check that you have all the facts regarding a job assignment. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Your aspects favor closer family relationships this week. Take time for visits, whether in person, by phone, by mail or in cyberspace. Let them know how important they are to you. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A missed opportunity isn’t always a negative. Maybe your instincts are telling you not to rush into something you “thought” was worthwhile. Make time for family this weekend. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Your sense of humor helps you get through a tricky situation. But some stick-in-the-muds might not be so willing to make the changes that you and others agree are necessary. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a gift for making everyone you know -- or even just met -- feel important and welcome in your life.
Spring Tire M aintenance

Salt, grim e and pot holes can take a toll on tires over the course of a typical w inter. Drivers w ill not get far this spring and sum m er w ithout tires in good repair, w hich is w hy tire m aintenance should be part of any seasonal repair checklist. Now is the tim e to use a tire pressure gauge to see if tires are at the ideal inflation levels. M any tires indicate the recom m ended PSI (pounds per square inch) on their sidew alls. Cold tem peratures m ay cause tires to deflate a little. Driving on im properly inflated tires can be dangerous, potentially affecting handling and braking distances. Check tires w hen they are cold for the m ost accurate reading. Properly inflated tires also w ill im prove fuel econom y. Exam ine the tires for tread w ear. Any uneven or abnorm al tread w ear could indicate that the tires need to be rotated and the w heels realigned at the very least. M echanics m ay recom m end rotating tires every 6,000 to 8,000 m iles, or about every six m onths for the average driver. Wheel realignm ent m ay be necessary after a season of driving over potholes and other irregularities in the road. Drivers m ay discover extrem e tread w ear, bulges or even cracks in the sidew all during a tire inspection. These signs indicate that it’s tim e to replace the tires.

PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM
HEMP HAS SIGNIFICANT HEALTH BENEFITS FOR PETS (NAPSI)—NaturVet’s veterinarian-formulated pet supplements have progressed over the last 25 years to keep up with the ever-changing needs of pet parents. NaturVet’s newest Hemp for Health product line includes four top products—Allergy, Calming, Immune and Joint— that are now available enhanced with Hemp Seed Oil and Hemp Seed Powder, sharing the same great original base formulas that pet parents have relied on for years.
The Purina Pet Care Center found that overweight pets may live two years less than ideal weight pets. Reduced life span is not the only problem, as carrying extra pounds can contribute to various maladies. These include osteoarthritis and poor joint health, type 2 diabetes, ligament injuries, heart and respiratory disease, kidney disease, and cancer.

Although marijuana and hemp come from the same cannabis family, the plants are completely different in function, cultivation and application. Hemp is grown specifically for agricultural purposes and has been used for hundreds of years in textiles, body care products, paper products, industrial products and building materials. Most importantly, hemp is nonpsychoactive and cannot get your pet high. Hemp has significant health benefits for pets. Hemp is high in fiber; a great source of plant-based protein; is rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids; and contains phytonutrients, antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and 20 amino acids. Hemp Seed Oil and Hemp Seed Powder work synergistically with other active ingredients to help provide support for allergies, stress and anxiety, joints, aches and discomfort, the immune system, and overall health and wellness. A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel
Setting The Record Straight: Common Myths About Vacation Rentals (NAPSI)—Vacation rental homes are becoming increasingly popular. In fact, 89 percent of travelers who have never rented a vacation home before would consider it, according to a recent study. However, popular misconceptions prevent some people from doing so. Here are a few facts that can help. Myth #1: More space = a higher price tag. Many travelers assume vacation rentals are more expensive than traditional lodging. Think again: When you break down the price per night and per room compared to traditional accommodations, vacation rentals typically offer better value—plus, you get added living areas. Rental homes can also prove more cost effective when you average in all the convenient amenities, such as kitchens to save money on meals, or washers and dryers to cut down on baggage fees because you can pack less.
* On July 8, 1951, Paris, the capital city of France, celebrates turning 2,000 years old. However, the City of Lights was most likely founded around 250 B.C., when a Gallic tribe known as the Parisii settled an island (Ile de la Cite) in the Seine River, which runs through present-day Paris. * On July 9, 1962, Bob Dylan records "Blowin' in the Wind," although it wouldn't be released for another year. The most well-known version was done by Peter, Paul and Mary, which became a hit. * On July 10, 1985, in Auckland harbor in New Zealand, Greenpeace's Rainbow Warrior sinks after French agents in diving gear plant a bomb on the ship's hull. Although French authorities denied responsibility, a British newspaper later uncovered evidence of French President Francois Mitterrand's authorization of the bombing plan.
Myth #2: I need to have a large group. Vacation rental homes come in all shapes and sizes, from studio units and condos in resort-style communities to larger, private homes with four or more bedrooms. Solo travelers, couples and families alike can enjoy rental homes for the convenience and can find the rightsized home for their needs. Myth #3: I have to stay for at least a week. Many vacation rental homes offer flexibility when it comes to length of stay. Travelers can often find rentals for weekend stays, especially during off-peak travel periods. Myth #4: You have to book far in advance. There is no set time frame for booking a rental home before your trip. While booking further in advance can give you a greater selection to choose from, there are often great last-minute deals in many popular vacation destinations for those who can’t plan as far ahead. Myth #5: If I need help, I’m on my own. This one depends on how you book your rental home. If you book directly with a homeowner through a listing site, you will have to work out any issues directly with the owner. However, if you book through a professional manager, such as Wyndham Vacation Rentals, there is someone available 24/7 to assist you and to serve as a liaison between you and the property owner. Wyndham even offers a “Vacation Rental Bill of Rights” that assures travelers that their expectations will be met. Learn more about vacation rentals at www.VacationDifferently. com. The travel resource offers great tips on family travel, ideas for vacation rental accommodations, and inspiration on a different way to travel. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Thank you to the good Samaritan who left a note on our SUV on 6/5 in Wegmans parking lot about the nail in our tire. We do not know who you are, so we cannot thank you personally, but it was very much appreciated. We were able to get it fixed that day and not get a surprise later. So again, thank you! A particular weed and grass killer contains [a chemical] which is said to be carcinogenic to humans. Why is there not a ban on spraying it? After six years of exposure to this chemical, there could be significant factors affecting one’s health. So, why does the landlord keep spraying this chemical around the well? This well is used by the renters daily for everyday needs. What about liability?

When I realized my low tire pressure warning light was on, I drove over to Chip’s on Lake Rd. Chip and Jason pulled a roofing nail out of my tire, put a plug in and wouldn’t accept any payment. Thank you for your fantastic hometown service! I really appreciate it!! Your shop has all my business!
was fine, but the other women asked her why the dog was barking, and she said it was because the dog was nervous because of the two girls standing there. My daughters were not yelling or talking loudly or running around, they were just calmly walking around with the rabbit. The woman had no right to yell at them, telling them to leave. They were not disturbing anyone. If you want the dog to be quiet then take him away from the window so he doesn’t get “nervous” at two girls walking around.

So-called climate change sounds like some quasiscience in order to drum up more money. Seasonal change is really what it is. It happens all the time, and the Earth will survive. It has for millions of years, anyway. What is making more negative ‘climate change’ are the oodles of wind and solar farms. Nature has survived for eons without solar farms and wind farms, which do not help the problem at all and make it worse. A moratorium should be put in place to stop them from being built.

On Friday, June 14th in the Batavia Kmart parking lot a good Samaritan found an envelope/utility bill payment I had dropped on the ground getting out of my car. They took time out of their day to bring it back to my home. Thank you so much. I appreciate your kindness.
Thank you, Christine and Lisa, for the flowers at the Lima Town Hall and at the 4-corners. They are beautiful!
If you love nature, let nature shine; don’t ruin it with ugly structures. I was surprised to see that vitriolic rant entitled, “Be a Mother,” about the widow of two years. Whoever wrote that is so judgmental and lacking in compassion. I’m sure they think of themselves as a caring Christian. Haven’t they heard “Let him who is without sin cast the first stone?” It has to be tough enough to be a young widow without some nosy neighbor second guessing every parenting decision you make. Shame on whoever wrote that.

Visit consignment stores: Consignment shops and Goodwill(R) stores are popular places to buy preowned items. These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale. When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available. Page 23

Persistent Underarm Odor Can be Minimized ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: I have underarm odor. I wash daily, use deodorant and change my shirts daily. I use mostly cotton shirts and undershirts. I launder my shirts with soap mixed with bicarbonate sodium (baking soda) to eliminate odor. In spite of all this, deodorants seem to work for few hours and then fade away. What other solutions do you have for this problem, whether it’s what to use for the underarm or what to wash the clothes with? Thanks. -- N.I. ANSWER: Body odor comes mainly from bacteria that grow in the moist areas, like axillae (armpits). Keeping them dry and minimizing bacteria are then the ways to minimize body odor. Antiperspirant, rather than deodorant, is effective at keeping the axillae dryer. Applying at nighttime after shower or bath may be more effective. Occasional use of a topical antibiotic to the axillae can keep bacteria growth down as well. Diet can have a role, too. Sulfur-containing foods like garlic, along with onions and many curries, can cause a strong odor. As far as washing clothes, most detergents do a very good job of removing the odor-causing bacteria.
ZERO IN ON XEROSTOMIA The condition called “dry mouth” is a symptom that occurs when the salivary glands do not produce enough saliva to prevent the mouth from drying out. Also known as “xerostomia,” dry mouth is no small matter since saliva not only limits the growth of cavity-causing bacteria, but also bathes the teeth in minerals that can help early-stage cavities to “remineralize” (or heal). Xerostomia can also promote halitosis, cracking of the lips, increased plaque accumulation, tongue ulcers, and other complications. Drinking plenty of water can help keep the oral environment moist during limited use of mouth-drying medication. Long-term use of medications such as anti-depressants and those for high blood pressure is likely to require medication to increase saliva production.
No matter what your oral concerns may be, we want you to be comfortable coming to our office. We try to make all our patients’ visits as relaxing as possible. If you are hesitant about visiting the dentist, for dry mouth, cosmetic matters, or other oral issues, we invite you to call us at BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, where You Will Have A Positive Experience! For full-service, patientfriendly dental care in a comfortable atmosphere, make an appointment today at 6 Batavia City Centre. You can reach us at 585.343.4246. P.S. The dentist may prescribe pilocarpine (Salagen) or cevimeline (Evoxac) to stimulate the production of saliva when treating dry mouth.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I went in for an annual examination with my primary-care doctor, and she took my blood tests in the laboratory. She told me that I have high potassium, 5.5, and had me retake it. I did, and the test came back with a much lower level of 4.3! What could have caused the level to go up so high? Was this due to eating a lot of avocado and yogurt on a daily basis? I was eating a whole avocado in the a.m. for breakfast and a yogurt with apple and peach. Should I be seeing a specialist to recheck it? Please describe potassium and its job, and advise what I should do. -A.V.R. ANSWER: Avocados and yogurt are high-potassium foods, and peaches and apples are medium-potassium foods. However, most people can take in high amounts of potassium without worry, since the kidney is very good at getting rid of potassium if the body doesn’t need it. I more often see low potassium levels, from poor intake or from medications, such as diuretics, which can cause the body to lose potassium. However, some people with kidney disease (especially severe kidney disease) need to carefully watch and limit oral potassium intake. By far the biggest reason for a potassium blood test to come out abnormally high relates to the lab itself. Samples that sit around a long time or that are shaken will have broken blood cells, which release high levels of potassium into the serum, causing false elevations in the lab. If you didn’t change your diet between the two tests, there is no reason to worry at all. Your primary doctor is the right person to see.
Youth sports injuries are common but preventable. Warming up, being in good physical shape and not overtaxing a growing body can help kids avoid pain and impairment.

DEAR DR. ROACH: Does sunlight make chickenpox blisters appear more quickly? -- S.V.A.
ANSWER: I have heard that, too, but can’t find any evidence that it’s true. The rash of chickenpox certainly will come, even in darkness. Sunlight can worsen scarring from chickenpox, and the affected skin is more susceptible to burning, so those with chickenpox rash should be kept out of the sun. Chickenpox is also very contagious; restrict contact with anyone who hasn’t had it or the vaccine. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. HEEL SPUR SYNDROME/PLANTAR FASCIITIS is a common problem among people who are active. It starts as a dull intermittent pain in the heel and progresses to a sharp persistent pain. Classically, it is worse in the morning with the first few steps, after sitting, after standing or after walking.
And Feel Rewarded
• Plantar fasciitis often begins with irritation and tearing of the fibrous band of tissue on the bottom of the foot, which may eventually result in the formation of a heel spur. • Contributing factors: Flat pronated feet, high arched feet, poor shoe support, increase age, sudden weight increase, increased activity level, family tendency. • 95% of our patients’ symptoms are resolved with conservative treatment, avoiding surgical intervention. • We also offer surgical procedures with the best post op success rates using Endoscopic Plantar Fasciotomy techniques (minimal incisions and scarring; often back in a shoe in 1 week).

CROSSWORD
“We are inclined to believe those whom we do not know because they have never deceived us…” ~ Samuel Johnson Each year we read new stories about victims who have been duped by confidence men. The same old crooked schemes work on people who should know better but who put an almost childlike trust in total strangers. Johnson speculates that we tend to believe stangers becuase they have no record of deceit. The people close to us may have “fibbed” to us or misrepresented facts, perhaps only to tease. The stranger’s record is unblemished until we learn to our sorrow that he, too, might lie to us for gain. There are definite advantages in making funeral arrangements well in advance of need. Let us review these with you…no cost or obligation.

HOW EVERYDAY CITIZENS CAN PROTECT LOCAL PARKS Leave nothing behind. Memories are not the only things park visitors should take with them when they leave the park. Estimates suggest that as much as 100 million pounds of garbage are generated at California’s Yosemite National Park each year. Significant damage can result if even a tiny fraction of that garbage is left behind. In addition, park officials forced to expend their limited resources on garbage pickup may not have enough resources left to address other issues, further threatening the park. Whether you’re hiking or camping, make sure everything you take into the park comes with you when you leave. If you have trash, make sure it’s deposited into the appropriate receptacles. SPORTS QUIZ By Chris Richcreek 1. In 2018, Texas’ Adrian Beltre became the all-time major league leader in hits by a Latin American-born player. Who had held the mark? 2. Who were the last pair of Philadelphia Phillies before Maikel Franco and Aaron Altherr in 2018 to each hit a grand slam in the same game? 3. How many times have the Kansas City Chiefs won three consecutive AFC West titles? 4. Entering 2019, the University of Miami’s (Fla.) men’s basketball program has had five players who were chosen in the first round of the NBA Draft. Name three of them. 5. How may consecutive seasons have the Pittsburgh Penguins reached the NHL playoffs? 6. In 2019, Gregg Berhalter became the first coach of the U.S. men’s soccer team to also have played for the team in a World Cup. When was that? 7. When was the last time before 2019 (Country House) that the winning horse of the Kentucky Derby had odds of winning as being at least 65-1? (c) 2019 King Features Syndicate, Inc.
Answers 1. Rod Carew, with 3,053 hits. 2. Ryan Howard and Raul Ibanez, in 2009. 3. Once (2016-18). 4. DID YOU KNOW? Many an amateur landscaper has encountered grubs while tending to their lawns, but even the most attentive green thumber may have a lawn infested with grubs and not know it. According to the pest and weed experts at Roundup®, grubs often go unnoticed until late summer, when they’ve already done substantial damage to a lawn. Oddly enough, one of the telltales signs of a grub infestation is not the grubs themselves but the animals looking to dine on them. Fully grown grubs make for hearty meals, so homeowners who notice raccoons, skunks, armadillos, and/or birds digging up their lawns may have a grub infestation. That’s because these unwanted guests like to dine on mature grubs who have spent summer feasting on organic matter in the soil. Another sign of a possible grub infestation is a lawn that feels spongy when stepped on. Patches of dead grass that peel back easily are a sign that grubs have eaten the roots that keep healthy grass in place. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

SMELLY FIREPLACE? After a long season of use, fireplaces need to be cleaned. Many homeowners think this is a job that can be put off until the fall, but spring is an ideal season to have the chimney and flue cleaned and inspected. One reason to include scrubbing the chimney as part of spring cleaning is to cut down on odor. After using a fireplace, a buildup of creosote forms in the chimney. As the weather gets warmer, creosote deposits can start to smell sour and that odor will seep into the home. In addition, moisture can mix with the creosote and start to degrade the flue liner, necessitating costly repairs. The sooner a chimney and flue are cleaned the better. A chimney sweep can do a thorough job of scrubbing down the chimney and fireplace and ensuring that everything will be in working order come next season.

A pply online at rh net.org Experien ce the R-H A dvan tage! GET A HANDLE ON WORK-RELATED STRESS Work-related stress is an all too common problem in workplaces across the globe. According to the American Institute of Stress, 80 percent of workers report feeling stress on the job. Perhaps most troubling, nearly half of those people admit they need help in learning how to manage their stress. The American Psychological Association notes that stressful work environments can contribute to a host of physical problems, including headache, sleep disturbances and short temper. Chronic stress can produce more serious consequences such as high blood pressure while also weakening sufferers’ immune systems. Stress at the workplace also can make it difficult to concentrate, which in turn can compromise workers’ abilities to perform at the peak of their abilities. That supports the notion that stress is a problem for both employees and employers. As a result, finding ways to reduce that stress should be a team effort. Getting a handle on stress can be difficult. Since so many people trace their stress to the jobs they need to get by, they might think it’s impossible to address that stress without derailing their careers. But there ways for professionals to get a handle on their stress without negatively affecting their careers.

BOOST ENERGY AT THE OFFICE Squeeze in a midday workout. Numerous studies have shown the many benefits to daily exercise, but professionals may not know that exercise can help improve their productivity at the office. A 2005 study from researchers at the then-named Leeds Metropolitan University in England asked 200 workers to answer questions regarding their productivity on days when they exercised at lunchtime and days when they did not exercise. Sixty percent said their job performance, including their ability to meet deadlines and manage their time, improved by a considerable amount on the days when they exercised.
