HOW TO DETERMINE IF IT’S TIME TO DOWNSIZE Space: Many people love the extra space that single-family homes provide. But seniors can take a walk through their homes and see how many rooms they still use on a consistent basis. If much of the home is unused, seniors can probably downsize without adversely affecting their daily lives.

Data from the United States Department of Justice indicates that partner violence accounted for 20 percent of all violent crime in the U.S. in 2018. The World Health Organization defines intimate partner violence as behavior within an intimate relationship that causes physical, sexual or psychological harm. Such violence can include acts of physical aggression, sexual coercion, psychological abuse, and controlling behaviors. Violence perpetrated by both current and former spouses and partners falls under the umbrella of intimate partner violence. Domestic violence is so prevalent that the National Network to End Domestic Violence reports that it fields more than 19,000 calls on a typical day. Anyone who is a victim of domestic violence or suspects a loved one or acquaintance is being abused is urged to call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233 (SAFE) or 1-800-7873224 (TTY) right away.

2ND ANNUAL SUMMER BASH

at Farmer’s Creekside a Huge Success! BY AMANDA DUDEK As rays from the descending sun danced on the nearby banks of the Oatka, the 2nd annual Summer Bash was just getting into full swing. Farmer’s Creekside Tavern & Inn in LeRoy once again hosted this funfilled celebration to benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation of WNY (CFF). Genesee Valley Publications staff were joined by several friends, family members, and advertising partners to help make this event even bigger than it was last year.

The Summer Bash was indeed a terrific success. Not only did this stunning local eatery provide the perfect atmosphere for celebration, but they also went above and beyond in their generosity. Farmer’s Creekside Tavern & Inn donated three huge gift baskets to our silent auction which garnered over $600 for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation of WNY. On behalf of GVP and CFF, we would like to thank Creekside for donating so much in support of such a worthy cause!

The Summer Bash was open to the public, and guests gathered along the tavern’s creek level patio, enjoying the outdoor bar and moving to the live music—thanks to Encore Events—flowing from the outdoor stage. On this patio as well as on one of its deck areas, guests strolled between vendors for select wine, brews, and spirits tastings.

Since 1955, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (CFF) has been working hard to cure cystic fibrosis and to provide people with the disease the opportunity to lead full, productive lives. CFF funds research and drug development, advocates treatment tailored to the individual, and works to guarantee access to specialized care based on ever-developing best practices.

Sarah Christ and Kara Ivison of Home magazine produced by Genesee Valley Publications (GVP), joined Sarah Farmer and Maria Valencia of Farmer’s Creekside Tavern & Inn to make this possible. These vendors brought some of their finest and most popular selections. All were enthusiastic and gracious as they shared their specialties. Among these were such vendors as Thin Man Brewery, Opici Wine & Spirits, Ziobaffa Wine, Blue Nectar, Lockhouse Distillery, Ravines Wine Cellars, Rohrbach Brewing Co., Hercules Mulligan, Black Button Distilling, Genesee Brewery, BeerPass, Deep Eddy Vodka, Monsieur Touton, Norwhey Nordic Seltzers, and Iron Smoke Distillery.

Rochester’s Finest works with CFF in their mission to find a cure for all people living with CF. Thanks to the cystic fibrosis drug therapies now available, and thanks to the Foundation and its supporters, many people with CF are living into their 40’s and beyond! For more information about CFF and to purchase tickets for its end-of-the-year fundraising celebration at La Luna High Falls, visit https://finest.cff.org/Rochester.

Creekside itself offered a specially curated menu for the celebration, including select wines and brews, specialty cocktails, and delectable dishes such as its watermelon salad and its chicken French dip sandwich, not to mention mouthwatering hand-cut fries. As always, every possible item was made from scratch, right down to some of the simple syrups in the cocktails. Guests could simply could not get enough! “The Summer Bash at Creekside was awesome!” said guest and LeRoy resident Chuck Flynn. “The food, friends, food, music, & drink were superb! If you missed it, put it on your calendar next year, like, right now.” The Summer Bash was also part of GVP’s MacKenzie McGrain’s efforts as one of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s Rochester’s Finest. “I would like to thank everyone who participated in the silent auction to help raise over $2,000 in funds for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation,” said McGrain. “I am so grateful to my mentor, Christine White, for nominating me as one of Rochester’s Finest honorees this year, as well as to Patty Schwarzweller the director of CFF of Western New York. I would like to also thank Laurie Abbott, Sarah Christ, and Kara Ivison for guiding me to success before, during, and after the event. I am honored to be a part of such an amazing foundation.” Thank you to Carla Coots from Insight Photo for capturing our event!

Master

Gardeners Decades ago, a family member told us to plant English Ivy in the beds next to our fence in the back yard. Thirty years later it’s now taking over. What method do you recommend to stop it? Cutting it and pulling it out isn’t feasible. Thank you! It can be challenging, some might ask what harm it is in taking over as doesn’t require a mower. But, if you want to remove any unwanted plants the best way that I have found is using Lasagna Mulching. Lasagna gardening, also known as sheet mulching is a no-till no-dig gardening method that turns materials like kitchen waste, straw, and newspapers into rich, healthy compost. Everything you

from Cornell Cooperative Extension, Livingston County use is pretty much the same things you would use to compost. Now you are just adding them directly to form an organic garden bed, and you don’t have to move compost. It’s already there! You can start making your lasagna garden any time of the year, but you can layer it up in the fall as you are putting your beds to bed, cover it up with plastic, and when it comes time to take off the plastic, you have great new compost and plant on that! To get started, cardboard or newspaper make an excellent bottom layer because they will smother grass and weeds. Water this bottom layer to hold it in place and

encourage decomposition. Then add a 2-inch layer of a carbon-rich “brown” material on top of the cardboard or newspaper layer, such as leaves, straw, black and white newspaper, sawdust, tea bags, or wood ash. Then add a 2-inch layer of nitrogen-rich” green” material such as grass clippings, kitchen scraps from fruits and vegetables, well-rotted horse or cow manure, coffee grounds, or plant cuttings without seeds. Garden

debris that contains weed seeds or diseased materials should not be used. Alternate layers of carbon-rich and nitrogen-rich material until the mulch reaches approximately 3 feet. You don’t need to turn the pile. - Sandy Vanno Master Gardener Warren County CC

STEPS TO TAKE BEFORE AN APPRAISER’S VISIT Clean the house. A dirty home that is full of clutter will not make the best impression on appraisers. Dirty homes may be vulnerable to insect infestations that can lead to structural problems with the home. While a dirty home is not necessarily an indicator of infestations or a reflection of a home’s value, a clean home will create a stronger first impression with the appraiser.

GENERAL CONTRACTING EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED WHEN RENOVATING Dirt and noise: Homeowners can count on dust, debris and noise throughout the renovation process. Dust appears when walls come down or go up, and construction teams typically erect temporary walls or tarps to contain the debris. Air filtering systems also can limit dust particles. Noise is unavoidable. If it becomes troublesome, arrange to be outside of the home when the bulk of the construction is taking place.

WE CAN DO IT ALL!

Choose a theme. The right style allows hardscaping and softscaping materials to work together. For example, homeowners may want to give their yards an eastern feel, complete with a koi pond and decorative bridge or trellis. A formal English garden, however, may include manicured paths with stepping stones and ornate topiaries. Mixing too many styles together can take away from the overall appeal.

-Water Heater (installs & repairs) -Bathroom & Kitchen Remodels -Backflow Testing (NYS certified) -AC Repairs

The pros suggest looking at the overall plan of the design, even if all of the work can’t be completed at once. This way the eventual finished project wil be cohesive.

Plants depend on insects to transfer pollen as they forage, and many insects are quite beneficial to have around. While some pollinate, others are predators of other pests. • Antlion: A foe of ants, they’ll help eat and control ant populations and pollinate flowers. They pose no threat to humans, either. • Big dipper firefly: These colorful insects feast on earthworms, slugs and snails during the larval stage. Fireflies add drama to evening gardens with their twinkling lights. • Garden spiders: Although some spiders can be venomous, many are quite handy to have around the garden. They’ll help control pest populations that can damage plants and crops. • Dragonflies: These arial artists that zip around the yard are consuming smaller insects that would otherwise pester plants and humans. • Blue-winged wasp: This wasp attacks the larvae of Japanese beetles, helping to control beetle populations. • Bees and butterflies: Butterflies and bees are some of the best pollinators out there, and each can add whimsy to gardens.

3513 Thomas Dr., Suite 2

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have always read that when you are having your blood pressure taken, your arm should be elevated above your heart. When mine is taken this way, it is normal, around 120/70. When I go to the doctor, my blood pressure is taken with my arm hanging at my side. I often get a much higher reading taken this way, say, 140/90. Is there a correct way to take it, and does it affect the reading? My doctor said the position doesn’t matter and wants to prescribe medication. -- U.P. ANSWER: When taking the blood pressure, the goal is to approximate the blood pressure in the heart. That means that the blood pressure cuff should be at the level of the heart. If the blood pressure cuff is above the heart, then the blood pressure reading will be artificially low. If the blood pressure cuff is dangling below the level of the heart, the reading will be high. For every 10 cm (about 4 inches) above the heart, the blood pressure will be about 7 mm of mercury too low. If I stretch out my arm as high as I can above my heart, I can get it about 30 cm higher than my heart, which would be enough to explain the difference between the 140/90 and 120/70 you have observed. However, for most people when sitting up straight, a properly placed cuff on the arm will approximate the same level as the heart. Although you are right that the position matters, it sounds like the doctor’s office is taking the reading correctly. I should also note that the feet should be resting on the floor, not dangling, which can artificially raise the blood pressure. The arm should be supported while taking the blood pressure. I recommend taking the blood pressure three times and using the average. Given how important blood pressure is, correct technique is essential in order to properly recommend who should get blood pressure treatment. Evidence is increasing that a 24-hour home blood pressure device is more accurate at determining who might need medication, especially in suspected white coat hypertension, where the readings are artificially high just because a person is in the office (even if they don’t feel nervous). ***

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2022 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

DID YOU KNOW? The U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs estimates that around eight million adults in the United States experience post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in a given year. Women experience PTSD at a much greater rate than men. Estimates from the USDVA indicate that 10 percent of women and 4 percent of men are affected by PTSD. Instances of PTSD are similarly prevalent in Canada, where the Canadian Psychological Association estimates that around 8 percent of Canadians who experience a traumatic event develop PTSD. Though no one is immune to PTSD, rates of the disorder among combat veterans are significantly higher than the rates among the general population. USDVA reports that one study of 1,938 veterans found that the prevalence rate among Gulf War veterans was around 14 percent, while an older study from the American Psychological Association found that about 30 percent of Vietnam War veterans had PTSD in their lifetime.

AVOIDING AN ABSCESSED TOOTH A tooth abscess is a swollen pocket of pus caused by a bacterial infection in the tooth’s root. An abscess can occur at the bottom of the root or in the gums to the side of the root. Bacteria enters the root through an untreated cavity, chip, or crack in the tooth, causing swelling and inflammation. An abscess requires treatment and won’t resolve on its own. A dentist will drain the abscess and treat the infection. A root canal or tooth extraction may also be required. If a June night could talk, it would probably boast it invented romance. ~Bern Williams

History of the Festival The first Oatka Festival was held in 1989. It was Mayor Kevin Earle who wanted Le Roy to have a festival similar to what he had experienced in Dansville where he lived before moving to Le Roy. He spoke to Lynne Belluscio, curator of the Le Roy House, and Pete Weaver a local businessman and neighbor of the mayor. They visited Palmyra’s Canal Town Days several times to get ideas about the way to shape our festival. Together Lynne and Pete planned an old fashioned community gathering. The idea was to bring the community together for food, entertainment, and fun. It was a lot of work, but the reward is seeing the festival continue year after year. It has always been the idea of the festival committee that the size of the festival is perfect just as it is, and so it continues to have that old fashioned community gathering flair. Others have joined the committee that each year weaves a tapestry of Le Roy’s many features to present a festival that is one of the nicest family events in the northeast. Each year the festival, held on the banks of the scenic Oatka Creek, starts off with a gala musical parade. Many local churches and organizations provide the food choices and the continuous entertainment is family oriented. Another highlight of the festival is the arts and crafts show overlooking the scenic Oatka Creek. Many classes and families plan their reunions to coincide with this weekend and there is a “coming home atmosphere” for all who attend.

FUN WAYS TO KEEP KIDS OCCUPIED OVER SUMMER BREAK

FAST FACTS ABOUT THE SUN

Play dates: Play dates are a great way to make kids happy and take a little off of parents’ daily plates. Arrange routine summer play dates with children’s school friends, neighbors and/or cousins. Parents can alternate hosting responsibilities so they can get work done at home and enjoy a break when it’s not their turn to host.

Australia ranks near the top of the skin cancer risk list along with New Zealand. These countries are located close to the ozone layer hole over the Antarctic. In addition, during summer, the Earth’s orbit places Australia closer to the sun compared to other countries. That results in an additional solar UV intensity, according to Specialist Clinics of Australia.

HOW TO PROTECT YOUR HOME WHEN YOU’RE AWAY Keep quiet on social media. A Credit Sesame survey of former burglars in the United Kingdom found that 78 percent acknowledged monitoring social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter as they try to find homes to burglarize. Individuals about to go on vacation should avoid sharing that on social media.

Honey is nature’s sweet nectar. While honey certainly can add flavor to various recipes or be enjoyed straight out of the jar, it has many other surprising benefits as well. Used since ancient times as both a food and for medicinal purposes, honey can make for a versatile addition to anyone’s diet.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I live in hot, humid Florida and have the opportunity to adopt two kittens. My home has no air conditioning -- only ceiling and floor fans. When I return home during the summer, the indoor temperature can reach 95 degrees with high humidity. Can a kitten handle such high indoor temperatures and high humidity for nine hours a day? If there is any possibility of harm, I will not obtain the kittens. -- Ann T., via email DEAR ANN: If there’s doubt in your mind, you already know the answer. I commend you for thinking of the welfare of the kittens first. Now, I’ll tell you a similar story. During my first years out of college, I rented a small apartment in sunny, humid Orlando that had no air conditioning either. However, the first thing I purchased was a window unit air conditioner. Not for me, but for my cat. It was a significant expense, and it boosted my electric bill dramatically, but I didn’t think twice about it. Pets rely on us to keep them safe, fed and comfortable. An indoor cat doesn’t have control over the temperature and humidity in the home. As the temperature rises, they have few options to cool off -- no breezy, shady spots to lounge in, not much fresh air. At 95 degrees, even with a full bowl of water nearby, pets can suffer a heat injury. Kittens are even more vulnerable. If you’d like to adopt the kittens, first work out a way to keep your home’s temperature below 80 degrees. Pets are an investment in happiness. Their comfort and safety are part of that investment. Thank you again for thinking of the kittens’ safety. Send your questions to ask@ pawscorner.com.

DID YOU KNOW? Without pollinators, more than 100 crops grown in the United States would not be able to thrive. Plants, including various fruits, vegetables, nuts and more, rely on pollinators to ensure to transport pollen. Though many plants are self-pollinating and others are pollinated by the wind or water, many others rely on insects and animals to become pollinated. The U.S. Department of Agriculture says birds, bees, bats, butterflies, moths, flies, beetles, and small mammals all can work as pollinators. Examples of crops pollinated by pollinators include apples, squash and almonds. Animals and insects help pollinate more than 75 percent of the world’s flowering plants, and nearly 75 percent of all crops, according to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. Unfortunately, pesticide use can diminish the number of natural pollinators. Natural gardening and pest-control can help protect the habitats of pollinators. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

DAIRY DIETARY GUIDELINES Low-fat or fat-free dairy options are recommended. Low-fat or fat-free products can quell common concerns about dairy products, including that they’re high in fat, calories and sodium. The organization American Bone HealthTM reports that low-fat or fat-free dairy products provide more calcium, potassium, vitamin A, and vitamin D per calorie.

POOL SAFETY ESSENTIALS TO LIVE BY Keep water sanitary. Make sure pool water is chemically balanced so that it is comfortable to swim in and will not harbor any pathogens that can make swimmers ill. The pool equipment company Pahlen says the ideal water pH is 7.4 because that is the same as the pH in human eyes and mucous membranes, and it also supports good chlorine disinfection. The free chlorine content of a pool can range from 0.5 to 1.6 to keep it sanitary. A quality testing kit can help pool owners balance water.

* If you like taking baths, you can invest in a second rubber bathmat to drape over the side of the tub. The edge will be nonslip, so you can hold on for support, and your hands will not slide. *Before frosting a cake, brush both layers with apricot nectar. This will secure any crumbs and provide a smooth surface. -- L.H. in Illinois * For drains slowed by grease, sprinkle a half-cup each of salt and baking soda down the drain, and follow it with an entire kettle or pot of boiling water. * If the smell in your cedar chest has faded, bring it back easily with extra-fine sandpaper. A very light sanding is all it takes in most cases. * For delicious baked potatoes, boil a pot of salted water, add whole potatoes with skin, remove from heat and let stand for 15 minutes. Finish in oven for a sturdier skin. Start checking for doneness after 15 minutes in the oven. Baking time can be cut in half! -- J.L. in Florida * Remove that musty smell from stored clothes by adding either vinegar or ammonia to the wash water. Be sure to check for smell removal BEFORE drying, as the dryer can bake the smell into clothes, making it more difficult to remove.

Many people need not travel far for a little summertime fun, as many communities host fun events throughout the warmer months.

Emerging trends in crafting – Bringing the outside in: An ecologically sound and creative trend for spring involves crafting your own garden terrarium. Terrariums can be made out of just about any shaped glass or plastic container. Use hardy plants and a moisture-holding substrate to help your terrarium flourish. Terrariums can be interesting focal points for any room, and they’re a creative use for empty vases, aquariums and other containers collecting dust.

ENJOYING THRILLS AT AMUSEMENT PARKS One of the more beloved ways for thrill-seekers to spend a day off is to visit an amusement park. Amusement parks take many shapes. Some may be small, traveling carnivals, while others are large parks that draw visitors from all over the country. Amusement parks typically feature hair-raising rides, games of skill, tasty food, and gift shops. That means there’s something for everyone. Although they may seem like a relatively modern concept, amusement parks, fairs and carnivals actually have storied histories. In fact, historians say that carnivals and local fairs have been around since the Middle Ages. According to History.com, amusement parks, once dubbed “pleasure gardens” and “trolly parks,” sprung up across the United States and Europe in the 19th century.

Seriously? There is a noise ordinance in town. Next time you feel the need to rev up late at night, the Sheriff will be called.

S E V RA

What is wrong with people? I help a neighbor who runs a consignment shop outside of [local town]. It has clothing bins for donations of clothing and shoes outside in her parking lot. People keep leaving items like glassware, children’s toys, old furniture, etc. The truck only picks up the clothing donations in the bins. The store owner must then pay to dispose of all the stuff people leave there. We even left a note out there asking people to please donate [those items] elsewhere or to put it at the end of their own driveway with a “free” sign. If it’s junk, please dispose of it yourself. It has been costly for the shop owner, who runs a small business, and hurtful (to say the least) to find a new pile of stuff there every week!

Great Job! Great job to the crews, RG&E, Frontier, Spectrum and the multiple tree service companies and anyone else for cleaning up the mess after the big storm. They worked nonstop, and I appreciate it. Thanks! The Gnomes did it! We have a back shade garden in our yard. There are gnome houses, and gnomes running rampant through the garden. Someone added to our Gnome Village. Thank you to whoever installed the three little gnomes to Summers Street. They are a great addition! Very thoughtful of you!

Time to End This is a touchy subject, but I’ll say it anyways. When will we start considering impeachment of all our leaders in Washington? I’m not taking sides in politics, but at what point do we all realize what’s happening across America? If I don’t do my job at work, I get fired. I see no difference here.

Thank you, Minnehan's Restaurant! A huge "thank you" to Tim Minnehan and Minnehan's Restaurant for providing every camp participant in the Livingston County Baseball/Softball Camp with free ice cream and Mini Golf! Thanks, James! I visited the Burger King in Geneseo the other day and had the pleasure of being served by James. He was very patient with me while I made my decision. His friendliness and excellent customer service towards me and the other customers in the restaurant was refreshing. James, you are a gem!

“No one ever prayed heartily without learning something.....” ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

Prayer is a highly personal thing, since we all discuss our affairs with our own version of a Supreme being in our own way. Everyone prays..... especially at times of extreme stress. Just as “there are no atheists in foxholes” so, too, there is no one who doesn’t turn to his God for help when he knows his own resources are not adequate for the need at hand. People in dire straits are the ones who are most apt to pray “heartily.” And, in telling God about our problems, we are very apt to gain new perspective..... perhaps even discover solutions for ourselves. In fact, this could be God’s answer to our prayer. Families of all faiths and creeds can be certain of perfectly appropriate services when they put their trust in us.

Things to think about while planning a eulogy * Some churches do not allow eulogies during a church service. Others permit a brief reflection before the service or at the end. If you want a eulogy to be part of a church service, discuss this with the minister. Ask when during the service it is preferred and if there are any guidelines or restrictions to be aware of. * Other appropriate times for a eulogy may be during an evening service, during a visitation or following the remembrance service at a luncheon or reception. * If there are to be any readings during the service, the eulogist should be informed. * If there is to be more than one eulogy given, review this with the minister and coordinate with each speaker. Each speaker should avoid similar stories and themes, and each should be brief. Preplanning a funeral may not be something to look forward to, but doing so can protect families and provide men and women with some peace of mind.

MEMORIAL GIFTS HONOR LOVED ONES he loss of a friend or loved one is seldom easy, particularly if a person had been suffering from an illness. Close friends and family honor the memories of their deceased loved ones in different ways. Charitable giving can be a great way to honor a loved one’s memory while helping others. Survivors often find comfort in the knowledge that they can do good in the name of a loved one. Tributes or memorial gifts can be approached in different ways and serve as an ongoing reminder of a deceased loved one. Create a charitable foundation: Those who have the time and resources can establish their own charitable groups in the decedent’s name. This method of charity requires the most time and effort, but can prove to be quite an impactful memorial. Individuals who would like to go this route can consult with financial and tax professionals about the best way to establish a charitable group. Community foundation: Families can focus on something their loved one cared deeply about, such as animal rescue, children, the arts, or even particular places in a community - such as a local park. According to CarePages, a company that produces free patient websites and offers community support for those coping with illness, families can choose to have their donations funneled to specific charities or nonprofit groups. Otherwise, funds can be allocated to a third party community fund that will distribute money to various organizations no matter where they are located. Medical tribute: Memorial gifts that assist medical associations or groups working to find cures or offer treatments for diseases are quite popular. If a loved one passed away due to a specific illness, it is common to ask for donations to a specific organization that specializes in information and services pertaining to that illness. Many such groups have a “donate in memory” option on their websites. Oftentimes families are notified regarding who made memorial donations in their loved ones’ names, but the amount of the donation need not be revealed. Personal intentions: Those who would like to make a donation but cannot think of a charity to associate with their deceased loved one have a host of options at their disposal. Consider donating to a school or library, requesting materials be purchased in the decedent’s name. Otherwise, donate to a general scholarship fund, possibly at the decedent’s alma mater. Finish their work: If the decedent was engaged in a charitable project prior to their death, volunteer to help complete that project. Giving back after the death of a loved one is a great way to keep the memory of that person alive.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Study: the Second Half of Our Lives Sometimes the results of research and studies are suspect if we don’t trust the sources, but AARP and National Geographic recently published a joint study on the realities of the second half of life, and it doesn’t get any better than that. Their study covered the big topics as we age: health, relationships, financial security, housing, independent living, end of life, retirement and more. Here are some highlights: • We care most about our brain health, our independence and our relationships, in that order, as we move into our 70s. By the time we reach our 80s, it’s relationships that spike to the top of our list of concerns. • Guess what plunges by the time we reach our 70s? Work, and it’s no surprise. We’ve been there and done that, and the idea of climbing the ladder of success at work no longer appeals to us. • Health is a curious category, but it makes sense once you think about it. It seems that those who are the healthiest are the ones who are most concerned about their health, likely because they’d like to stay that way and remain active. They’re into walking and exercising and taking flu shots, whereas the ones who have a serious medical condition are less concerned, perhaps having accepted the reality of less-than-stellar health. But age plays a part in that: We’re most concerned about health in our 60s, much less concerned in our 70s, and very concerned again in our 80s, mostly about stamina, strength and flexibility. There’s something to be said for picking a form of exercise and sticking with it, especially if it helps with those three concerns. At the end of the day, the older we get, the more we care about meaningful relationships. As AARP noted, “Friends, family and community are the hallmarks of finding happiness. According to Gallup’s 2021 Economy and Personal Finance survey, the average individual in the United States is retiring earlier than many people might expect. Gallup found that the average retirement age was 62, which is two years earlier than the working respondents indicated they planned to retire. Canadians are retiring a little bit later than their American counterparts, as Statistics Canada reports the average retirement age in Canada is just over 63 and a half. The average retirement age is worth noting, as studies routinely find that many working professionals greatest concern about retiring is that they won’t have enough money saved to meet their needs. By recognizing that they may end up retiring earlier than they initially planned, professionals can make a concerted effort to save more money in the years ahead.

People with multiple hobbies recognize there are many great ways to spend one’s time. But even people with plenty of ways to pass their time may find themselves wasting time each day, a phenomenon that seems to be growing. In its 2014 “Wasting Time at Work” survey, Salary.com found that 89 percent of participants acknowledged wasting time at work each day. That marked a sharp increase from a year prior, when 69 percent of workers surveyed reported wasting time at work. Thirty-one percent of workers surveyed admitted wasting roughly 30 minutes per day, while another 31 percent estimated they waste around one hour each day. Perhaps the most surprising finding from the survey was that 4 percent of participants admitted they waste four or more hours, or at least half a typically eight-hour workday, at work each day. Some people might be wasting time out of sheer boredom, but many may be able to trace all those squandered minutes and hours to inefficiency.

HOW TO INVOLVE MORE YOUNG PEOPLE IN AGRICULTURE Encourage agriculture-based curriculum. After recognizing that the majority of Kenyan students had no access to farming training and education, the organization Farm Africa initiated a program to make agriculture more accessible to students. Students who participated learned about everything from keeping livestock to marketing produce for global markets. Similar programs can be encouraged in developed countries where opportunities in the field of agriculture figure to increase in the years to come.

WAYS TO IMPROVE YOUR MOBILE PHONE ETIQUETTE Always use appropriate language. When using a mobile phone in public, refrain from peppering conversations with expletives or graphic language. Children may be nearby without your knowledge, but even if there are no young people in the immediate vicinity, your fellow adults likely don’t want to hear foul or graphic language.
