Summer has set in with its usual severity. ~Samuel Taylor Coleridge
NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * A tip from our good friend A.S.M.: “When buying berries packed in a basket, check the bottom to see if there’s a juice stain. This means that the strawberries at the bottom are crushed.” * “Here’s a great tip for use at bath time with baby: I have a sippy cup that changes color when the drink is hot. Oddly enough, it changes at the perfect temperature for baby’s bath. So, I fill the tub and toss in the cup. When the cup starts to change back to its original color (blue), I know the bathwater is not too hot. I always swish the water around and check with my wrist also, but it is a good visual clue to check.” -- P.B. in Idaho * “To remove muffins or rolls from a pan, set it on an old, damp towel for a minute. The steam must loosen the bottoms because they just slide right out. I thank my mom for this tip.” -J.R. via e-mail * When heating milk in a pan, “seal” the pan with unsalted butter to keep the milk from filming and sticking to the sides. Lightly coat all sides of the pan with butter, and the milk is sure to not leave scum, which can take away from the rich flavor of the milk. * Do you find yourself throwing away unused and spoiled fruits and veggies at the end of the week? Try setting aside time after you come home from the grocery store for prepping fruits and vegetables. Pre-bag snack sizes of carrots, celery, strawberries, grapes, cantaloupe and apples. Pre-cut veggies for meals to make later in the week. Slice tomatoes and onions for sandwiches, and tear and separate lettuce for salads. They all make great, healthy treats, and having them ready to go makes it easier to get that five a day!

Keyboard-Loving Cat Sees Computer as Rival
• Cleaning • Real Estate Inspection
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Whenever I’m videoconferencing from home, my cat insists on jumping into my lap and pawing at the screen and the keyboard. If I put him outside the room, he will meow loudly and nonstop until I let him back in. Once the call is finished, he quiets down and goes away. To my co-workers, this is just a funny distraction, but I worry that it will have a negative impression on clients. How can I calm him down? -Melanie in Pittsburgh

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * Sociologists have discovered an interesting correlation between economic health and women’s clothing: The worse the economy, the longer women’s skirts become, while the better the economy, the shorter they rise.

For participating insurances, visit:
DEAR MELANIE: This is a tough one that many cat owners have faced. And now that so many of us are exclusively working from home, it’s going to continue -- unless you take some proactive steps. Cats jump onto your keyboard because they know it gets your attention. They’re not trying to figure out how to write social media posts. They just want you to pay as much attention to them as you do to the laptop screen. And locking a cat out of the room can trigger separation anxiety or just plain frustration that they can’t get in to be with you. Try this: Before a video call, give your cat 10 to 20 minutes of undivided attention. Pet him, play with his favorite toys, scratch his belly. This may help stop or reduce the number of times he jumps into your lap. Use positive reinforcement to teach your cat to do more of what you want and less of the things you don’t want him to do. To learn more about this training method, go to napahumane.org and search for “cats, positive reinforcement training.” Its basic premise is to reward your cat when he does something right.

Diamond engagement rings are presented as tokens of love and affection during wedding proposals. The majority of first-time brides will receive a diamond ring, with surveys indicating only 13 percent opt for another gemstone. Researchers from Emory University determined that the average price for a diamond ring is roughly $2,500. However, grooms can spend much more. Diamonds have symbolized eternal love for centuries, perhaps since they were first discovered in India more than 2,000 years ago. The ancient Greeks actually thought diamonds were tears of the gods, while ancient Romans believed diamonds were splinters from heavenly stars.

Shopping locally is a great w ay to benefit your community and, in many instances, your bottom line. W hen consumers shop locally, they help stimulate their local economies, creating jobs for their neighbors by helping local businesses grow and thrive. Shopping locally also saves shoppers long trips to the mall that can w aste expensive fuel, especially if consumers don’t find w hat they’re looking for. Shopping locally is especially important w hen the economy is struggling, as smaller businesses are not alw ays as capable of bearing the brunt of a recession as larger ones. Discover The Human Touch In Hearing Technology
TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Pulmonary Fibrosis Needs Exact Diagnosis ---
Lakeville 3513 Thomas Dr., Suite 2 Henrietta 20 Finn Road, Suite C
DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband was recently diagnosed with mild to moderate pulmonary fibrosis. His mother died from pulmonary fibrosis. From what we have read there is no cure, only palliative care. The thought of doing nothing to try to stop the progression is totally unacceptable when there have been such successes with immunotherapy and stem cells. Would he receive more aggressive treatment going to a pulmonary fibrosis care center that has lung disease programs? -- C.D. ANSWER: There are several diseases that may cause fibrosis of the lung, so having an exact diagnosis made by an expert is critical for getting the right treatment. The most common type of pulmonary fibrosis is called “idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis” (it also has been called “usual interstitial pneumonia” and “cryptogenic fibrosing alveolitis”), and I am going to discuss that diagnosis. The cause of IPF is unknown (both “idiopathic” and “cryptogenic” mean “of unknown cause”), but cigarette smoking is a risk factor. It is usually diagnosed in people who are their 50s and 60s, although some familial cases may come on earlier. IPF can run in families. Although it is a rare disease, it seems to be on the rise. The major symptoms are cough and shortness of breath. There is no cure for IPF, but there are treatments available. Two drugs, pirfenidone and nintedanib, are approved for use in the U.S. and Canada. Both of them slow progression of lung disease, reduce exacerbations and have been proven to reduce mortality from the condition, if only slightly. I am concerned that you and your husband apparently haven’t heard of these drugs. I strongly advise you get a referral to a center for lung disease in order to get your husband the best care. I found 35 IPF trials recruiting patients in the U.S. and six in Canada. A clinical trial will help scientists understand this condition as well as determine the best current treatment. You also can find out what centers have expertise on this condition by seeing where the trials are conducted at www.clinicaltrials.gov. The most aggressive treatment isn’t always the best, but you and your husband deserve to hear about all the options. The Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation can help you find experienced centers for treating this condition. You can find them online at www.pulmonaryfibrosis.org. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: My niece recently was diagnosed with breast cancer. Radiation was recommended. Her mother said that first she’d have to boost her immune system. Is it possible to actually do that? -- P.P.L. ANSWER: Radiation is a common treatment after breast cancer surgery. It’s done to reduce the risk of recurrence, depending on the exact type of cancer. Boosting the immune system is a new adjunct for many types of cancer. There are several ways to do this: One is to genetically modify the patient’s own immune T-cells, but many other techniques are in trials now. However, if your niece’s mother is talking about supplements, I’d be cautious. Supplements that are promoted to boost the immune system generally are ineffective at doing so. Making sure your niece has proper nutrition, gets good sleep and experiences as little stress as is manageable are ways to prevent stress on the immune system. Everyone could benefit from those deceptively simple steps, but especially a person being treated for cancer. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles
Getting Through the Day Some random thoughts for getting through the day. Have you heard of custom puzzles? They’re available at a number of places online. (Read the reviews before you order and look for U.S. companies.) Select a favorite vacation or family photo, decide on the size of the puzzle and the number of pieces, send in your order and you’ll get back all the pieces to create a puzzle of that image. Call the company first to be sure of the details. Buy stamps by mail and stay out of the post office. Ask the local post office to have your mail carrier bring out a stamp order form and envelope. Check off the ones you want, write a check payable to Postmaster and slide it into the envelope. Leave it in your outgoing mail and within a few days your stamps will be delivered to you. If you miss playing chess with others, you can play online. See www.chess.com/play/computer and play against the computer. Better yet, play against a pal using an old-school method: set up a board on each end and send your moves to each other via email. On the other hand, too many people are trying to cut their own hair nowadays since too many salons and barber shops are closed. If you think you want to cut your own hair, don’t. If you really insist you need to cut your hair and haven’t done it before, go online to YouTube and watch a few dozen how-to videos about cutting hair. Then rethink your plan again. Whatever you do, don’t use regular kitchen or paper scissors. If you have to do this, invest in proper haircutting shears.
This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

EXPLORE THE HISTORY AND FACTS OF CROSSWORD PUZZLES Even though a type of word puzzle was found inscribed on the wall of an ancient Egyptian tomb, the first known crossword puzzles are credited to journalist Arthur Wynne, who designed his “word-cross” in 1913. Wynne’s puzzle appeared in a Sunday newspaper called New York World. Since its inception, the crossword puzzle has become one of the world’s most recognizable puzzles, attracting enthusiasts from all over the world, and now appearing in virtually all newspapers.

Crossword puzzles are word games in which the answers correspond to numbered clues. The words are put into a grid of horizontal and vertical squares to form completed, intersecting words. When all of the words are supplied correctly, the puzzle is complete. In North America and Great Britain, crossword grids traditionally have 180-degree rotational symmetry. The diagram, or placement of black squares within the grid, must be symmetric diagonally. This means that the pattern of the puzzle will appear the same if the puzzle is turned upside down. American crossword puzzles conform to a set of established rules made popular by publisher Simon & Schuster, the original crossword puzzle publisher. The standard puzzle grid size is 15x15. However, 17x17, 19x19 and 21x21 also are used. Smaller 13x13 also are accepted. Many crossword puzzles do not use two-letter words, and three-letter words are kept to a minimum. In addition, every letter square must be part of both an Across and a Down word. Crossword rules are different in other parts of the world. For example, in Japan, the corner squares of a crossword puzzle must be white. Despite once publishing a statement describing crosswords as a “sinful waste in the utterly futile finding of words the letters of which will fit into a prearranged pattern” in 1924, The New York Times routinely produces what many consider to be the world’s most challenging crossword puzzles. Stanley Newman is credited with completing a New York Times crossword faster than anyone in history. In 1996, Newman completed a crossword in two minutes, 14 seconds. Crossword puzzles appear in newspapers, magazines and kids’ activity books and are even used in school lessons to supplement vocabulary lessons. Doing these puzzles also may be good for one’s health. According to a University of California at Berkeley study, crossword puzzles may help in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease. Researchers found that the more often someone engaged in mentally stimulating activities such as crosswords, the less buildup of beta-amyloid plaques in the brain, which are hallmarks of the disease. Doing crossword puzzles also may offer a distraction that helps people reduce stress. Crossword puzzles have a storied history. They are completed recreationally and in competitions, and cruciverbalists look forward to new puzzles in their newspapers every week.

We never know when we will witness the hand of God, but He is and was in Honeoye that day and worked a miracle through my friends. Praise God Almighty!

INEFFICIENCY I am 39 years old. I have grown up around dogs, and my dad used to adopt from (local shelter) years ago. (Local shelter) now forces you to make an appointment to even enter the building. I saw two dogs on their website that I wanted to look at, so I made an appointment that put me a week out. By the day of the appointment, the two dogs I was interested in were already adopted. The whole point of making the appointment was to view these dogs. What a completely inefficient way of conducting your operations, and don’t you dare blame it on coronavirus. I don’t appreciate having my time wasted. Am I left to assume I have to make an appointment and hope there happens to be a dog I want at that moment, or else I’m out of luck? You are making adoptions more difficult than they have to be!
ABUSING HOTELS AND MOTELS I manage a hotel in (local town) and want to vent about unacceptable behavior I’ve observed over the last 7 years. Local people, almost exclusively from (local city), will reserve a room by pooling money amongst 6-10 friends to afford the room. Once in the hotel, they play loud music, smoke, come in & out throughout the night, have parties, making excessive noise. They bring many non-guests to the swimming pool, and we’ve needed to shut down our pool on several occasions because of poor water quality. They have absolutely no consideration for our other valued guests. Here’s a suggestion to those trashing our hotels: stay at one of your friends’ houses, smoke, drink and make as much noise as you want. Don’t do it in a hotel!

IN RESPONSE TO NOSY NEIGHBOR Upon reading the post, I don’t feel that the person was nosy or spying. You also stated that the person makes the rules on his property. Well, in the times we live in, I think, in some ways, that is changing. As the Governor stated long ago, no one has the right to make anyone else sick with corona virus. They are enforcing wearing a mask, if you haven’t noticed, also social distancing. I would be disturbed if I saw neighbors, whomever, blatantly disobeying common sense things, such as social distancing, and the wearing of masks. That does not make a person nosy, just alert to what is going on in their surroundings. Disobeying such things as having a large group over your house, without social distancing, nor masks, can potentially be life threatening to the rest of us.

MUSIC This is for “Turn down your music”. You really can’t complain much since it was during day. If it bothered you so much you should have gone over to ask them to turn it down in a nice way. And you have to consider that these days music may help a person deal with all that is going on. I know it does me at times. Also, that person may have a hearing loss you don’t know about. As for taste of music being different, everyone has a different taste of music they like. You can’t change that. That’s for sure. If it goes on into the night, then call the police.

RECIPES FOR FUN: If you’re preparing a meal, it could be a good time to teach children of reading age how to review a recipe. Evaluating ingredients to learn how food transforms from raw to cooked or how a dish is created can help kids learn kitchen skills. FOOD GROUPS FOCUS: Get kids involved in making dinner by setting a rule that each food group must be represented. Give them a warmup activity by asking which food groups are found in family favorites like chicken soup, lasagna or meatloaf. Asking kids to guess which ingredients are used in these dishes and identifying which food group each ingredient belongs to can help them understand dietary balance.

They pride themselves in recognizing the incredible accomplishments of their Queens and competitors, achieved both on and off the pageant stage. The experience directors (who together have over 35 years of dedication to the pageant community) along with their staff, have worked diligently to create a pageant organization focused on the competition aspects that really work the best and that delegates enjoy the most. Beauty is not only on the outside, but the inside as well, which is why they have based their system around the aspects of personal judge’s interview, community service and involvement, as well as poise Maggie Dempsey, and personality during 2020 International United Miss on-stage competitions. BANISH MOSQUITOES FROM YOUR YARD Use fans. Consumer Reports tested the efficacy of oscillating pedestal fans to keep mosquitoes from invading decks and patios and found that such fans cut mosquito landings by 45 to 65 percent for those sitting closest to the fans. When hosting backyard barbecues, homeowners can set up several such fans on their decks and patios to keep mosquitoes at bay.

TURN YOUR SUMMER VACATION INTO A STAYCATION by Samantha Clayton, certified personal trainer
Bidding closes Tuesday, August 25th at 6pm
(NAPSI) — For many people, social distancing brings concern about summer plans. In previous years, summertime was when families planned their vacations. The kids would be out of school, the weather could be fantastic, and the days are longer— allowing optimal time to venture to new places, catch some sun and spend more time with friends and families.

Since you may have already been spending a lot more time with your family then you ever imagined due to coronavirus outbreak, you may be looking for ways to keep your family entertained. Between possibly working from home, managing your kids’ schoolwork and maintaining a functioning household, this time probably hasn’t felt much like a vacation. Social distancing guidelines are likely to remain in effect in many places during the summer. Activities and entertainment options, lodging, and dining will be affected. The good news is, you really don’t have to totally give up on enjoying the summer at home with your family. Here are some tips to make your staycation exciting for the whole family:

(Family Features) Families are alw ays looking for w ays to enjoy vacation time together that maximizes fun, w hile minimizing the budget. To help your family reduce costs on summer travel: Be flexible. Keep in mind the highest rates for hotels and entertainment stops are typically on w eekends. Plan a mid-w eek getaw ay, or start your vacation on a Sunday to take full advantage of off peak discounted tickets and overnight stays.
Magic Maze ISMS
Fit Focused Days Plan hiking trips or long walks or bike rides close to home. Enjoy nearby parks and take time to look over the architecture in your neighborhood. A quick Google search of interesting facts can help you to plan what you want to go to see. Being a tourist in your own community will help you have a greater appreciation for the place. Challenge your kids to identify certain plants, landmarks or wildlife when you’re out walking. It will make the walks more engaging. Having prizes helps with motivation, too. Additionally, backyard games can be a blast—sprinklers, hula hoops and jump rope are things kids love. Embrace The Farmers Markets A trip to a farmers market is not just a treat, it’s a great way to shop locally. Many of them have adopted social distancing guidelines, so they can be safe for family outings. These markets usually have beautiful fresh and seasonal options to explore, and perhaps find some fascinating new fruits and vegetables. Also, getting the kids involved in selecting ingredients for your meals may help spark their interest in healthier eating. Breaking your usual grocery shopping routine by browsing the stalls in beautiful weather can help spark a vacation vibe. Create Your Own At-Home Retreats With a little planning, you can make your own backyard or home feel like an enchanting vacation spot. For a spa weekend, buy or make your favorite products, and set up time to relax and treat yourself. Turn off all your tech distractions, set up a space outside or in a quiet room. You can even make spa water by cutting up some cucumber or fruit to flavor the water. Consider creating your own yoga retreat. Turn to your favorite online trainer, set up your mat in a designated space, light some candles or incense, and be sure to practice daily, with relaxing music. It’s all about being creative. Travel With Your Cooking With travel on the back burner, consider themed cooking nights to help transport your taste buds to any destination. It can be really fun to make drinks, shakes and meals with ingredients from places that are on your future travel list. Enjoy a nice Italian spritzer with your pasta one night, try cooking a beautiful curry meal or ordering take-out from a restaurant you’ve never tried before. Take it a step further and print out some fun-facts you can find online or rent a movie about the particular culture you’ll be indulging in that night; it’s a great opportunity for your family to learn about other cultures through food. Finally, take time to plan out your staycation in the same way you would with a travel vacation. Having an itinerary of what you want to do helps to prevent the lazy, do-nothing blues from taking over. A vacation is about rest, relaxation, discovery and recreation—all of those things can be accomplished right where you are. Studies have shown a positive correlation between taking vacation time and an overall feeling of well-being, so no matter what’s on your itinerary, make sure to thoroughly enjoy yourself. Ms. Clayton is the vice president, Sports Performance and Fitness, Herbalife Nutrition. She’s also the mother of four and lives in Los Angeles with her family. WHAT IT TAKES TO BE A TEAM PLAYER The ability to communicate, interact and work collectively with others is both a professional and personal asset. But in certain ways, the reliance on technology has made working as a team more complicated. People have grown accustomed to spending large quantities of time alone working at computers or on phones and tablets, potentially compromising their ability to work directly with others when the need arises. According to Monster.com, when it comes to choosing a candidate for a new job or promotion, employers consistently say they want a team player. That means it’s advantageous for professionals looking to further their careers to brush up on their team-building and social skills.

Individuals change jobs for many reasons, including greater professional satisfaction, money or a change of location. The financial experts at The Balance say that people change jobs more frequently than many people may think, noting today’s average worker changes jobs 12 times during his or her career. It is not uncommon for workers to change careers several times in a lifetime. The notion that the job a person starts out in directly after graduation is the one that he or she will have for the rest of his or her life - or at the very least, several years - is no longer the norm. Many younger workers migrate between jobs for greater compensation and fulfillment. Older workers, too, are faced with career stagnation. A survey from the University of Phoenix School of Business found 59 percent of working adults say they’re interested in taking the leap of a midlife career change. Once the idea for a career change has been planted in a person’s mind, he or she may be anxious to jump right in. However, career coaches and other experts say that it is better to take the transition slowly and confirm that changing careers is truly the path to take. Finding the right time for the transition is equally important. OATKA EDITION

RÉSUMÉ WRITING RULES TO FOLLOW Be brief yet effective A concise design is key. Many recruiters spend little to no time reviewing the hordes of résumés they receive. In fact, automated résumé bots may initially screen the documents to thin the crowd. According to data from the 12th annual Mystery Job Candidate survey by CareerXRoads, the average recruiter spends six seconds looking at a résumé. If a résumé is lengthy or doesn’t attract attention, it will likely be ignored. Stick to a single-page and make sure wording is brief but meaty.
