There are certain things you must do and should do if you plan to erect a fence. Most people find neighbors appreciate being informed of any decisions you are thinking of making to the property that can affect their views or their adjoining property. Before drawing up fence plans with a contractor, talk to the neighbors on either side of your home and gauge their receptiveness to a fence. At this point, you may want to consider offering to make the fencing project a joint deal to save money should the neighbors decide to install a fence as well. Contractors will often discount if they have several customers doing an installation at the same time. Property owners can save by splitting the costs of the shared walls of the fence where their property lines meet.
Grilled cobbler: Dutch ovens are one of the great tools of outdoor cooking. Dutch ovens are heavy, cast-iron pots that can be lowered into a campfire. However, Dutch ovens also can be placed in the belly of a grill. Line with foil and fill the Dutch oven with a favorite cake mix, the corresponding oil amount, fresh berries and even chocolate chips. Let cook for 30 to 40 minutes on low heat until the mixture is bubbly.

Home renovation projects can be both exciting and tricky. Do-ityourselfers are inspired by designs showcased in magazines, websites and their own communities. When DIY enthusiasts see a design they like, it’s understandable that they may want to emulate these looks at home. Remodeling is one of the larger DIY undertakings, and it goes beyond simple carpentry. Considering demolition, reconstruction, electrical, plumbing, and masonry work may be part of the DIY package, homeowners who are thinking about renovations must first stock up on the tools and other supplies of the trade. Having the right tools can mean the difference between a job well done and a job that needs to be redone.

A full-blown wet bar will require more construction, including plumbing and electricity if you need outlets for plugging in appliances. Wet bars are ideal in dens, renovated garages and finished basements.
Home bars can range from rolling carts to built-in wet bars to a single tray of items. Space in a home will dictate the kind of bar homeowners can have. Rolling bar carts are popular and versatile, and they can be kept stationary or rolled in and out of a room as needed. If a bar cart is open, organization is key, as you don’t want it to look unkempt.

According to the lawn care and pesticide experts at Ortho®, when a lawn is affected by ascochyta leaf blight, its healthy grass blades will be mixed in with diseased grass blades. Most prevalent in the spring, this disease can affect grass at any time during the growing season. That’s because the ascochyta fungi invade leaf blades through wounds, such as those that can result from mowing. Ortho® notes that dull lawn mowers can contribute to the disease, which might disappear on its own and can even return after it’s seemingly been cured. Maintaining a satisfactory level of disinfectant will help prevent the multiplication of bacteria and algae in the pool. Many pools are kept clean through the use of chlorine products. The ratio of chlorine to water needed to maintain the clarity of the water depends on the size of the pool, the sanitizer used, weather, sunlight and evaporation, and the pH. In many instances, the available free chlorine in a pool when tested should be between 3 and 4 ppm to offer adequate sanitation. Frequent testing will help pool owners gauge how well the pool water is holding chlorine and how to compensate if extra is needed.

The short answer is prune your sour cherry in the spring. For most fruit trees, spring (before the buds open into flowers and leaves) is the best time to prune unwanted limbs and branches.Growth and healing of live wood cuts begin right away and limit exposure of open wounds to insects and disease. One exception to that rule is sweet cherries. Since they are more susceptible to fungal and bacterial diseases, they should be pruned in late summer to minimize exposure.

Purslane is a vigorous weed that can be difficult to kill. Since it is close to your vegetables, you could carefully apply a weed killing product using a paint brush. Read the product label to make sure it is effective with this plant and follow all label instructions for your personal safety. A product that contains glyphosate will be absorbed into the roots and probably most effective, though repeated applications may be needed. If this weed is still growing after you have harvested your vegetables, you could use a tarp to cover the area and smother them where they are growing over the winter. - Julie Brocklehurst-Woods, Master GardenerVolunteer Should I prune my sour cherry tree in the spring orinthefall?

Online POLL For decades, people young and old have flocked to movie theaters for the latest film releases, but times are changing. Movies are increasingly and quickly available through streaming services in the comfort of one’s own home. Combined with what some have described as a “block buster desert,” this has led many movie goers to become movie “stayers.” How will you watch the next film that catches your interest?

WAYS TO IMPROVE YOUR MOBILE ETIQUETTEPHONE the rules. Movie theaters, airline cabins, libraries, and various other places have rules in place governing the use of mobile phones. These rules are designed to ensure everyone has a safe, enjoyable experience. Breaking these rules can be a safety risk in certain situations, but is more often merely inconsiderate of those around you. If you must use a mobile phone but you’re in a restricted area, excuse yourself and tend to the matter elsewhere.

The Livingston County Board of Supervisors has designated the month of September as the thirty-day period for submission of petitions by landowners for inclusion of land that is highly suitable for a commercial farm operation into an existing Agricultural District.
Petitions cannot be accepted for removal of parcels from an Agricultural District.
ATTENTION FARMERS IN LIVINGSTON COUNTY
Use an appropriate extension cord. String lights above outdoor living spaces like decks and patios can create a warm, relaxing nighttime vibe. Those lights need to be plugged in, which increases the risk for electrical accidents. When utilizing an extension cord outdoors, never use a cord designated for indoor use. Outdoor extension cords are better insulated than cords made for indoor use. That insulation provides better protection against the elements, including sunlight, changes in temperature and moisture. When using an extension cord outdoors, make sure the cord is secured and not left lying on a deck or patio where it can easily become a tripping hazard.
If you would like to have your land included in an existing Agricultural District, please submit your written request, along with the tax map identification number and a description of the farming activities on the land, to the Livingston County Planning Department, 6 Court Street – Room 305, Geneseo, NY, 14454 by September 30, 2022.

DEAR DR. ROACH: As a 90-year-old man in mostly good health, I have been taking one Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim) pill per day for several years now, preventatively for recurrent urinary tract infections. I am very pleased with this successful treatment. However, my urologist has mentioned that I might have to relinquish the Bactrim at some point without a full explanation of why. Is there any danger in the habitual use of Bactrim? -J.M. ANSWER: Both men and women who get recurrent urinary infections are sometimes treated with prophylactic antibiotics, such as the sulfa-based antibiotic you are taking. The main risk is not toxicity of the medicine, it is that you might acquire a bacterial strain that is resistant to the antibiotic treatment. You are fortunate that you have gone several years without this developing, and you may go many more successfully, but other people periodically need to change the antibiotic they are Prophylactictaking.

antibiotics are not the first-line treatment to prevent recurrent infection. Urologists, the specialists for the urinary tract, will evaluate the urinary system to try to identify a correctible condition. I trust your urologist has considered other options before prescribing your current treatment.

Sleep apnea is a sleeping disorder in which a person repeatedly pauses or stops breathing. People with sleep apnea have higher rates of teeth grinding, and recent studies have shown that sleep apnea actually causes teeth grinding in some patients. Teeth grinding during sleep may also be caused by stress, anxiety, an abnormal bite, and missing or crooked teeth. Over time, teeth grinding can wear teeth down, loosen them, damage the jawbone, and cause tooth loss. Not sure if you’re a teeth grinder? Your dentist can look for signs such as jaw tenderness and excessive wear of the teeth. A dentist can also fit sleep apnea patients with a mouth guard that protects teeth during sleep. If you have questions about sleep apnea and bruxism (teeth grinding), be sure to discuss your concerns with us at BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL.
P.S. In addition to teeth grinding, signs of sleep apnea include loud snoring, morning headaches and dry mouth, insomnia, and excessive sleepiness during the day.
SLEEP APNEA LINKED TO TEETH GRINDING We bring you our weekly dental column in order to keep you up-to-date on the latest research, innovations, and procedures available in dentistry today and to inform our friends and neighbors here in Batavia how the many benefits of modern oral care can enhance their lives. Back-to-School
BY AMANDA DUDEK
• We love it: Make the rst day fun! Set the tone by decorating your child’s door with streamers and balloons!
Set First Day Expectations:
• Unsurprisingly, frequent hand washing continues to greatly reduce the risk of many communicable illnesses. Pocket-sized, great smelling hand soaps might encourage your child to scrub, scrub, scrub!
Shi your Schedule the Week Before:
• We love it: row a bu et dinner with your child’s favorite foods to celebrate the rst day of school.
• We love it: Have your child leave his or her backpack out the night before the rst day of school so the “backpack fairy” can leave a fun surprise (like a cool new backpack decoration) by morning!
• Prep grabbable, lunch-size portions of fruits and other healthy lunch “building blocks” to get kids involved in choosing their lunches.
• Avoid the sudden jolt of a much earlier wake up. Set earlier times incrementally leading up to the rst day of school, dialing back both the bedtime and the wake-up time 15 minutes, 30 minutes, or even an hour earlier every 5-7 days, as necessary until you reach your desired school schedule bedtime and wake up time. A full 8+ hours of sleep improves health and focus.
• Children are o en aware of—and worried about—more than we think. Ask your child about any questions or concerns they have about back-to-school. Let them know what plans are in place in case any situations arise. Knowing what to expect should decrease any anxiety they may feel.
• Buy the bulk of your child’s back-to-school clothes in October for the best deals.
• Make the half hour before lights out reading time. Reading before bed has been found to improve sleep while reducing anxiety and stress. Join in, too!
celebrate—and hopefully stay healthy—all year long!
etting your child ready for the rst day of school hasn’t felt quite the same since the pandemic, but for the rst time in nearly three years, children are returning to the classroom with some semblance of what could be considered pre-pandemic normalcy. Need a little help getting back into the swing of things? Try our refreshed and updated tips for rst day success to help you
• Before you wake your child, get yourself ready.
• Fill out all forms, i.e., immunization forms, permission slips by the week preceding the start of school. Find out what your school’s most updated policies are regarding vaccinations, masks, distancing, Covid testing, etc.
• Use reminders to stay on pace as you get ready. Try setting an hour, half hour, een-minute, ve-minute, and leave now reminder, if necessary.
• Sanitizing is still important, so make sure your child has access to hand sanitizer, perhaps in mini bottles.
• Keep a planner with a separate folder for each child’s paperwork.
Prep like a Pro:
• We love it: Create a “drop zone” for your child’s things right next to where they walk in the door. Don’t forget a tray or stand for forms, notes, and other papers! Love to write? Riga Recreation's annual Summer Camp was a smashing success these past seven weeks! This summer experience for our youngsters could not have taken place if not for the following individuals/organizations:
Camp Director Dave Childs, along with his counselor staff that included counselor Gladys, the Churchville Elementary School custodial staff, the CCCSD Continuing Ed. Dept., Bauer Karate, CCMS Gardening, Rose Garden Bowling, The Magic Guy, Air Affair Bounce House, Arlene's Air Brush Tattoos, and Pizza 151 for making this summer a special one! - David Thomas, Recreation Supervisor, Town of Riga Thank you!

Private Property, Indeed! I’m responding to the rant regarding the person troubled by a family posing their children for a photo in front of their farmland. “Personal boundaries” have become quite ridiculous in our country. Unless it’s a public park or state land, every piece of land is off limits and usually filled with those all-too-familiar posted signs. When my family traveled to Scotland a few years back, I quickly noticed the utter lack of those nasty posted signs. When I inquired with the host of the place we stayed at about the absence of Keep Out signs, we were told that there was a mutual respect of property there and that people were free to hike or roam on any piece of open land. I took her up on that and enjoyed that great freedom while feeling uneasy as it was so unusual to me. How nice it would be to have that same attitude here! I know there are those that abuse the privilege, but a true form of “common decency” allowing such a harmless act would remind us that America IS the land of the free.
A huge thank you to Tom from the Rose Garden Bowl in Bergen for donating 20 used bowling pins for a NEW recreation program called FOWLING. This is a brand new game which combines "FO" (football) and "OWLING" (bowling). Without Tom's generous donation, we could not have made this possible! - David Thomas, Recreation Supervisor, Town of Riga
Trash Thrown in Hayfield Today at 5:30 AM, I saw a vehicle stop so that the driver could toss a pile of filthy trash into our hayfield on (local road, local town), of mostly cigarette packs, many receipts identified with their debit card number, and a quantity of hard seltzer cans. I just picked it all up; metal fragments, in particular, can kill animals ingesting the baled hay. Be aware that your vehicle’s lights illuminated you! Fair warning: Next time, you will be reported to the sheriff’s office, because we become weary of picking up after pigs. The numerous convenience stores from which your garbage originated all have trash cans! gvpennysaver.com

e senior center commandeered a large space at the rec center to use in an experiment. eir goal: to determine if we actually meant what we said about not coming in for exercise classes in a cramped senior center space where we’re all breathing on one another. Find more room, we’d said, room to spread out. Hence, the borrowed space at the rec center (which had to cancel the Tots and Mommy Workout Hour ... something about a stay-at-home father objecting to the name of the class).

e rec center space was nicely decorated with blue painter’s tape X spots across the oor, 10 feet apart. en before we started, we got a little talk. “How many of you haven’t taken an exercise class in two years?” asked the too-young male exercise coach we’d never met before. Hands went up. ere was a knowing nod from the coach and the admonishment: “We’ll be taking this nice and easy. Do not push yourselves. If you need to stop and rest, then do that. Nobody will judge you.” He cast a erce look around the room as he said that. e routine the coach put us through was a perfect combination of nearly everything, starting with mild stretching, moving into a few minutes of yoga poses, some cha-cha steps, a few ballet moves, leg li s, toe touches andDuringmore.our cool down (although we hadn’t actually worked up a sweat) the coach inquired: “How many want to do this again? Twice a week, same time.”Hands went up, because, yes, we wanted more of this. We each took a handout at the door as we le , instructions for doing these exercises at home in case we didn’t like the rec center setup. But I have a feeling we’re all going to show up next week. It’s the rst bit of normal in two years.

WHAT IT TAKES TO BE A
TEAM PLAYER
The ability to communicate, interact and work collectively others is both a and personal asset. But in certain ways, the reliance on technology has made working as a team more complicated. People have grown accustomed to spending large quantities of time alone working at computers or on phones and potentially compromising their ability to work directly with others when the need arises. According to Monster.com, when it comes to choosing a candidate for a new job or promotion, employers consistently say they want a team player. That means it’s advantageous for professionals looking to further their careers to brush up on their team-building and social skills.

On the flip side, however, first-time business owners have only an 18 percent chance of succeeding. So how to bridge the gap between the dreamers and the triumphant? If you’re a student looking for a way to make your passion into your career, you may be glad to learn there’s a college program that can put you on the right path, while also providing you with a classic liberal arts education.
The program is headed by Marshall D. Welch III, the Sloter Endowed Chair in Entrepreneurship at Lycoming College, who is an accomplished entrepreneur with extensive experience advising and managing organizations, merger integration and emerging growth companies. He also approaches entrepreneurship differently from others. Welch believes that entrepreneurship, at its core, is finding and creating value, and that studying entrepreneurship as an academic discipline helps students learn to be innovative in whatever field they ultimately pursue.
The program is built on the notion that any student’s core education, regardless of academic major, can be augmented with the practical knowledge and skills necessary to take a business idea to fruition, such as innovation, digital marketing, intellectual property and financial skills.
In less than one year, Lycoming College’s entrepreneurship classes have become a sought-after, valued addition to many students’ class schedules.
“My No. 1 objective is to create a world-class experience for students by joining the liberal arts with entrepreneurship,” said Welch. “I believe that the core knowledge of any entrepreneur is first his or her primary field of study, whether that is biology, archaeology, music or any of the other majors at Lycoming. Then add the practical knowledge and skills necessary to help our students become successful entrepreneurs or even work for entrepreneurial companies.”
The new Entrepreneurship minor course of study at Pennsylvania’s Lycoming College provides a modern approach to a liberal arts education, while preparing students to start a company of their own, to work for another entrepreneurial company or to be more entrepreneurial within a larger company.
