Getting your child ready for the first day of school can be challenging for even the most experienced moms and dads. Use these great tips for first day success you can celebrate all week long! Set Sunday Evening Aside
Prep like a Pro
Lay out all of your and your child’s outfits for the week.
Buy the bulk of your child’s back-to-school clothes in October for the best deals.
We love it! Plan a fun evening activity for the first day that your kids will look forward to.
Pack extra outfits in gallon-size freezer bags.
Prep lunch-size portions of fruits and get kids involved in assembling their lunches.
We love it! Have your child leave his or her backpack out the night before the first day of school, and have the backpack fairy leave school or art supplies, a new lunch box, a new book or shirt, or maybe even a cool new backpack decoration by morning!
We love it! Write weekly meals on a chalkboard with one meal chosen by each child. Prep make-ahead frozen breakfasts for easy, warm-and-go mornings.
Shift your Schedule the Week Before
Throw a buffet dinner with your child’s favorite foods to celebrate the first day of school.
Set earlier bedtimes. A full 8+ hours of sleep improves health and focus.
We love it! Use a sandwich cookie cutter to press your child’s sandwiches into bite-size cubes!
Keep your kids reading fresh materials at a regularly scheduled reading time. Join in, too!
Best First Day Tips
We love it! With your child, pick one item from your summer bucket list and check it off together.
Get yourself ready first.
Backpacks & Paperwork Fill out all forms, i.e. immunization forms, permission slips, by the previous week. Keep a planner with a separate folder for each child’s paperwork.
We love it! Decorate your child’s door with streamers and balloons. They’ll walk out like a sports player or Rockstar! Use a timer to stay on pace as you get ready. Set a “Ten minute” and a “Leave now” bell. We love it! Write cheerful messages on the sidewalk for your child to read along the way!
We love it! Give an interest questionnaire to your child’s teachers to help you pick up some little Thank You treats for them throughout the year.
We love it! Leave encouraging notes in your child’s lunch box. Write your own or try adorable pre-printed ones like the ones on our Pinterest page!

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Changing your mind doesn’t come easily for Lambs, who place a high value on commitment. But new facts could emerge that might persuade you to rethink your situation. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) This is a good time to put that fine Bovine’s eye for beauty to work in redecorating your home or workplace. And don’t forget to indulge yourself in some personal time as well. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Your sense of loyalty to someone who asks for your help is commendable. But make sure there are no information gaps that should be filled in before you move too far too quickly. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Don’t let difficult people raise the Crab’s ire levels this week. Avoid them if you can. If not, resist telling them off, even if you think they deserve it. Things improve by week’s end. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Your suspicions about a colleague might be on the mark. But you also could be misreading the signals you believe you’re getting. Do some discreet checking before jumping to conclusions. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Take some time out from your many tasks and see if someone might be trying to reach out to you. You could be surprised to learn who it is and why you might want to reciprocate. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) You still might want to do more investigating before taking on a new commitment. Later would not be the time to try to fill in any crucial gaps in what you need to know about it. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A new opportunity should be carefully studied. It might offer some of the things you’ve been looking for. Or it could contain new possibilities you never considered. Check it out. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) You might have to work harder this week to get people to listen to what you have to say. But if you stay with it, you could start to get your message out to many by week’s end. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Although family matters again take up a big chunk of the Goat’s time, the week also offers a chance to explore a new career move you’d been contemplating for a while. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Applying your practicality (what does it offer me?) and your creativity (how can I improve on it?) could provide sound reasons for seriously considering that new offer. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) The single set will find that keeping their romantic aspirations on high gives Cupid a better target to aim at. Paired Pisces will find that this week helps reinforce their relationships. BORN THIS WEEK: You believe in encouraging others to demand the best from themselves. You would be a fine sports coach, as well as an enlightened teacher.

Gardeners East Rochester soil is mostly sandy. What are some good ways to improve it for flower or vegetable gardens? For example, what about adding peat moss, bagged dirt from the garden/home store, other materials/ products? Someone mentioned a potential Garden Club for ER, so all may be interested in the reply. Thank you! – James K. Sand does not hold water or nutrients and lacks micro-organisms. There is a multitude of information on the subject of amending sandy soils, but all basically gets to the same answer: add organic matter to improve soil. Amending with Organic Matter
Organic matter improves soil structure, increases water-holding capacity, improves fertility, and reduces problems with soil diseases. There is no replacement for organic matter in improving soil health and providing good growing conditions for vegetables. Organic matter can be added in the form of plant waste (such as leaves or lawn clippings), composts, green manures, or aged animal manures. It is necessary to consistently add organic matter (every year or two) because it rapidly breaks down in the soil.

FUN FACTS
NOW ENROLLING! We celebrate Labor Day on the first Monday of September. Labor Day was created to honor the working people of America, and how they helped build our country’s strength and prosperity. It is usually celebrated with summer activities. Some people consider it the unofficial end to Summertime. Cookouts, parades and picnics are all common ways of celebrating Labor Day.

HOW PARENTS CAN SIMPLIFY STUDENTS’ TRANSITION TO COLLEGE LIFE Let kids handle more standard responsibilities. Adults tend to take more mundane responsibilities like making doctor’s appointments or grocery shopping for granted. But kids likely have no idea how to handle such tasks. Parents can encourage their high school seniors to make their own medical appointments. In addition, take kids along on grocery shopping trips, explaining how to find sale items and which foods to buy and which to avoid. Nutrition is not always foremost on the minds of college freshmen, but those who understand the importance of healthy diets are more likely to buy nutritious meals than junk food.

Summer health and beauty guidelines Get a healthier glow. Many people equate health and vitality to tan skin. However, spending time outdoors in the sun or using indoor tanning beds that expose you to UV rays can increase your risk of skin cancer, including dangerous melanoma. The American Cancer Society says melanoma will account for more than 73,000 cases of invasive skin cancer in 2015. Melanoma accounts for more than 9,900 of the roughly 13,000 skin cancer deaths each year. Sunless tanners and bronzers can give skin that sun-kissed look without the downside of exposure to UV rays. Those who must go out in the sun should wear a wide-brimmed hat and limit their exposure between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when the sun’s rays are at their strongest.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 75-year-old man in excellent overall health. Routine bloodwork recently showed an elevated potassium level of 5.6. For the most part, I follow a vegetarian diet, which includes a number of very healthy foods that also happen to be high in potassium. I exercise regularly. Two years ago, my level was 4.9. My cardiologist stopped my metoprolol, as he said that could have pushed up the potassium, and he felt that based on my routine tests it was safe to stop it. I also stopped the 500-mg turmeric supplement I was taking, as a precaution. I take no other drugs. I’d hate to have to give up bananas and the other fruits that contain potassium, which I eat in moderation as part of my regular diet. Do you think the 5.6 level is cause for concern, and could you make a recommendation? -- V.D. ANSWER: A potassium level of 5.6 is still in the normal range in my hospital’s laboratory. Although metoprolol can raise potassium, it’s not one of the medicines that is very likely to do so, such as an ACE inhibitor or spironolactone. Some people just have a high normal potassium. Turmeric, on the other hand, has lots of potassium, so stopping that was reasonable. I would recommend that you not worry too much about the potassium and keep up your diet, including fruits in moderation. In addition to avoiding turmeric, I would recommend that you avoid salt substitutes, since they have very high amounts of potassium. ***

EASY DOES IT! In an effort to keep their teeth clean and white, some people exert excessive pressure on their toothbrushes and/or use overly abrasive toothpastes and powders. This does more harm than good. The fact is that plaque (sticky bacterial film) is soft enough that minimal pressure on the brush, along with the detergents and mild abrasives in most toothpastes are all that is needed to remove it. Brushing harder does not help achieve a deeper clean, may cause sensitive gum tissue to recede, and can even erode tooth enamel. Proper brushing merely requires holding a soft-bristled at a 45-degree angle to the gum-line and using short, gentle strokes to clean one section of teeth at a time. Give your delicate gums a breaktreat them kindly with proper care and theyíll reward you with years of optimal
oral health. And be sure to keep up with regular professional checkups and cleanings, too. For dental care for the family, we welcome you to BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, conveniently located at 6 Batavia City Centre. You can reach us at 585.343.4246.
P.S. If you notice that you are brushing your teeth too hard, try moving the brush in a small, circular motion, rather than brushing back and forth.

and well 81-year-old woman. I take vitamin D, and exercise daily with walking and yoga. My recent bone density test showed my T-score for the hip at -2.2 and spine at -3.2. My primary doctor insists that I take Prolia or Boniva. I am reluctant to do this, as I am aware of the side effects and don’t trust the ultimate results of the medication. Nutrition centers have recommended calcium supplements. Your help would be greatly appreciated. -- L.B. ANSWER: Anyone can get an estimate of his or her risk for fracture using the FRAX calculation tool at www.sheffield.ac.uk/ FRAX. I made a few assumptions with the information you gave me and estimated your risk of a hip fracture in the next 10 years as 6%, and any major osteoporotic fracture as 17%. A medication like Boniva would be expected to reduce your risk to something like 4% and 14%. Prolia has been shown to reduce risk of vertebral and hip fractures, and the decreased risk of vertebral fracture might be even greater with this drug (perhaps 4% hip and 8% total), although Prolia and Boniva have not been directly compared. Guidelines would clearly recommend medication for you. Calcium alone is unlikely to significantly reduce your risk of fracture. “Insist” is a strong word, but given the reduction in your relatively high fracture risk, I would suggest that you reconsider. Boniva is given once monthly and Prolia twice yearly. The side effects are mild for most people. Taking the medication for three to five years is very reasonable, after which you’d re-evaluate. I hope this information makes it easier for you to make the right decision for yourself. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Venture off campus. Towns that rely heavily on colleges or universities to support their economies typically offer great deals to students willing to venture off campus. Local businesses, including bars, restaurants and entertainment venues like mini golf facilities or bowling alleys, may offer student discounts to entice kids to leave campus. Students can take advantage of these offerings to save on food and entertainment, which tend to be among the more pricey cost-of-living expenses college students contend with.

STRANGE BUT TRUE by Samantha Weaver It was American poet and playwright Edna St. Vincent Millay -- the first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for poetry, by the way -- who made the following sage observation: “A person who publishes a book appears willfully in public with his pants down.”
Magic Maze SECOND LARGEST CITY IN ITS STATE
(NAPS)—If you’re like most people, changing the settings on your computer or smartphone can be a frustrating experience, full of technological jargon, confusing menus and complicated controls. That’s why the digital advertising industry decided to create a simple and intuitive way for people to get information and make choices about certain types of online ads they get. It’s as easy as clicking a blue triangle. In the corner of many online and mobile ads today, there’s a little blue triangle, sometimes labeled “AdChoices” or “Your AdChoices.” That triangle is known as the YourAdChoices icon, and it can be your gateway to trustworthy information and control over digital ads. When you see the blue triangle, it means the ad might be using information collected from other websites about your interests to help personalize advertising for you. The icon gives you information about how that process works, along with choices to “opt out” if you don’t want to see that type of advertising, which is known as “interest-based advertising.” It makes predictions about the types of ads groups of people might want to see based on data about the websites or apps they enjoy, such as sports, movies, hobbies or travel. To protect privacy, most advertising systems are designed to not connect that data to actual names or identities. Instead, those systems use a non-identifiable string of text—such as jsf284vn732ebu19dp—for each computer or mobile device, which lets them deliver ads to that device. Most people find that type of advertising more relevant and helpful than generic ads. If you’re shopping for a new camera, it can show you ads for discounts or camera accessories you might need. If your team won the playoffs, it can make it easy to buy the team’s new championship gear. If you love to travel, it can help you find bargains and little-known destinations. Perhaps equally important, those ads help fund the free websites, services, and apps you use every day, including e-mail, news, videos, social media, photos, maps and search. If you want to learn more about an ad or control your choices, clicking on the icon gives you information about the companies that brought you the ad and a way to turn off the collection and use of data for interest-based advertising from those companies in the future. In addition, to learn more or control your preferences for hundreds of companies at once, you can go to YourAdChoices.com, which serves as a control panel for companies engaged in interest-based advertising. A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel On Aug. 31, 1955, William Cobb of General Motors demonstrates his 15-inch-long “Sunmobile,” the world’s first solar-powered automobile, at an auto show in Chicago. On Aug. 29, 2004, Brazilian distance runner Vanderlei de Lima is attacked and dragged off the course by a spectator while running the marathon in the Summer Olympics. The spectator was a defrocked Irish priest dressed in orange and green. De Lima, who held a 30-second lead when he was attacked, finished in third place. On Sept. 1, 1864, renowned Confederate spy Rose O’Neal Greenhow drowns off the North Carolina coast when her craft capsizes while fleeing a Union gunboat. Greenhow was carrying Confederate dispatches and $2,000 in gold sewn into her underclothes. The weight of the gold pulled her under. On Aug. 30, 1776, Gen. George Washington rejects British Gen. William Howe’s second letter of reconciliation. Howe had failed to use Washington’s title of “general” when addressing the letter.
“People seem to me to be happiest when they are working for nothing and can afford to do so…” ~ Robert S. Lynd
As an American sociologist of considerable note, Lynd spoke with the authority of experience. He observed that when people are engaged in volunteer work, they are usually doing what they enjoy best. Most people work for nothing because they truly enjoy the work for which they volunteer. Although this may seem to apply mainly to retired persons, most of us could afford to volunteer a few hours to projects where our help is greatly needed. Our reward would be rich…Happiness! The rewards of pre-planning one’s own funeral service are peace of mind and the satisfaction of knowing your desires will be carried out. Let us provide further details to answer your questions, without obligation.

STRANGE BUT TRUE by Samantha Weaver Would you rather give up TV or your phone? In a Pew Research poll conducted last year in the United States, only 31 percent of those surveyed said it would be "very hard" to give up TV, while 52 percent said the same thing about their cellphone.

Beat the heat during a summer wedding Rely on shade and proximity to water. Shade can be your friend when the sun is blazing. If your outdoor wedding is in the early afternoon, keep temperatures under wrap by seating guests beneath umbrellas or inside a tent.

Prevent bugs, sap and other substances from ruining a vehicle Tree sap Although tree sap won’t cause immediate damage to vehicle paint, it should not be ignored. Over time, sap can become more difficult to remove, etch through the clear coat on the vehicle and cause discoloration. When the temperature is hot, damage from sap can accelerate. On windows and windshields, drivers may be able to gently remove dried sap with a razor blade. However, use cleaning products on more delicate paint. Automotive stores sell speciality sap and tar cleaners. Otherwise, you can try rubbing alcohol. It may take a few attempts to remove sap entirely.
All service customers receive a free hand car wash.

* On Sept. 7, 1813, the United States gets its nickname, Uncle Sam, when a newspaper picks up on the story of Samuel Wilson, a meat packer who supplied barrels of beef to the United States Army. Wilson stamped the barrels with “U.S.” for United States, but soldiers began referring to the grub as “Uncle Sam’s.”

The Honeoye Falls-Mendon Volunteer Ambulance (HFMVA) HFMVABOD@yahoo.com • call/text 585-298-2257 The Honeoye Falls-Mendon Volunteer Ambulance (HFMVA) has been providing basic and advanced levels of emergency medical care to Mendon, Honeoye Falls, West Bloomfield and surrounding communities in Monroe, Livingston, and Ontario counties either as the primary emergency health care provider or under mutual aid for over 50 years. In a time-honored American tradition, citizen volunteers respond to over 1,000 calls each year from our neighbors and transport patients to local and regional hospitals. In addition, HFMVA conducts training in the community for CPR and AED use, loans medical equipment to injured neighbors, and provides emergency medical stand-by services for many events held by other volunteer organizations, all free of charge. Volunteers help manage the organization, drive ambulances, and serve as emergency medical technicians. Currently, we are in need of drivers for the ambulances. Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age. Volunteering is a great way for retirees to serve their community. We provide free training for volunteers. To learn how you can volunteer, visit the Volunteer page on our website: www.gvpennysaver.com. Interested in being a featured nonprofit? Contact us at Hometown@gvpennysaver.com.

In the 2015 version of its annual survey of colleges and universities to determine which majors earn students the best starting salaries, PayScale.com collected data from 1,000 universities, including 86 percent of American schools with undergraduate enrollments exceeding 5,000 students. The average mid-career salary for early childhood education majors was $38,000, the second lowest mid-career salary of any major included in the study. Child and family studies majors had the second lowest starting salaries, earning an average of $31,200. Rounding out the five lowest starting salaries were culinary arts ($31,900), child development ($32,200) and early childhood and elementary education ($32,300). HOW STUDENTS CAN HANDLE THE TRANSITION TO MIDDLE SCHOOL
Your amazing support is why:
Participate in a school-based transition program. Middle schools frequently host open houses for elementary school students, who can take tours of the campus. Parents can take part in these events with their children. If your schedule does not allow you to attend, then schedule a private tour with the middle school principal or a faculty member. Middle school guidance counselors or guest speakers also may make the rounds, visiting elementary schools directly. Be sure your student attends such information sessions so he or she can get an idea of what to expect during middle school.
“We are a gift TO the Community made possible BY the Community.” See You Next Year in July! Plan on attending our 4th Annual Christmas Sale November 29th & 30th, 9am-3pm Are you interested in helping with our fundraisers? We have MANY volunteer opportunities available! Please contact Diane Sia at 585-343-3892, dianesia@crossroadshouse.com for more information.

STAY COOL THIS SUMMER WHILE LIMITING ENERGY CONSUMPTION
STRANGE BUT TRUE by Samantha Weaver Those who study such things -- and who, evidently, have way too much time on their hands -- claim that there are 108 stitches in a baseball.
Install ceiling fans. Cool people in a given room by installing ceiling fans in areas of the home that might be warm but not too hot during the summertime. Modern ceiling fans with the ENERGY STAR® logo can be as much as 75 percent more efficient than older models, and ceiling fans typically consume far less energy than air conditioners. Install fans that can rotate forward and in reverse, as the direction the fan is rotating can actually heat or cool a room. Consult the owner’s manual to determine which direction fans should be rotating in on hot and cold days.

FALL IS FOR PLANTING A lot of people ask why fall is for planting. Fall has distinct planting benefits. Autumn’s cooler air temperatures are easier on both plants and gardeners. The soil is still warm, allowing roots to grow until the ground freezes. Fall has more good days for planting than spring does, when rain and other unpredictable weather can make working the soil impossible. Furthermore, our nurseries that we select our quality perennial, annual, ornamental, and tree products from would rather sell their remaining product than store their stock over winter. With that in mind, our nurseries that we work with pass along a discount on their stock to us, and we like to pass that along to our exsiting and new customers. With that being said, don’t hesitate. Call our office today or e-mail us at the link below to start rejuvinating and/or building a new landscape with some beautiful spectacular plantings to your home or business!

TIPS TO MAKE AN OLDER HOME MORE ENERGY EFFICIENT Top up or replace old insulation in your attic. A poorly insulated attic is a primary source of energy loss. Also, over time, some types of insulation can settle and compact, allowing heat to escape through gaps. Experts recommend installing a dimensionally stable batt insulation. Aim for an r-value of at least R-50, or a depth of roughly 16 inches.

Before risking discoloration or scratching, try some ingredients that are may be lying around the house. For example, use a wet sponge dipped in baking soda as a mild abrasive to clean resin. Just be sure to thoroughly rinse off the powdery residue afterward. Automatic dishwasher detergent mixed with a gallon of warm water also may do the trick. The detergent contains a mild bleaching agent that will not cause damage like straight bleach.

Thank you to Sent by Ravens Food Center in Livonia. You are all so kind and generous with your time and talents. Thank you for sponsoring Foodlink as well. Small towns are the best! Grateful
Thank you to the honest person who found my purse in the shopping cart at WalMart on 8/12/19 and turned it in to the Service Desk! Great job to the town highway departments working on Mumford Road. It was a huge improvement. Thank you for keeping our town and county roads in good shape.
Instead of being the lawn police, be a good neighbor yourself! Find out how you can help, and then help! This is America where we have tolerance for each other. Walk a mile in my shoes before you complain about how I don’t have time, money, or strength to make my yard parade ready for you, nor do I care what you think. Don’t judge a book by its cover. I’m a taxpayer, too, and I don’t have to impress you to live here. You’ve got too much time on your hands if all you see is what you can complain about. Go help someone; be a better American.
A special thank you to Wegmans for the very generous donation to BSA Troop 4045 in Perry. We truly would not have been as successful in raising funds to send our boys to camp this year without your help. Your donation was used to offset the cost of our annual Chicken BBQ fundraiser. We were able to send 10 boys to summer camp this year! Again, thank you for helping the Boy Scouts.
on you. In this day and age where social media has made this world so unsocial, a total stranger wanted to help you, and you wrote such a nasty post about it! Why? There will be a time that you do need someone’s help, and I hope you will be more grateful then. No excuse for your ignorance here.

On Monday, August 19th, I was entering Top’s in Hamlin, when I saw three delightful children, excited about finding a hidden rock/stone. I began conversing with them and their mom. I complimented the youngster on how pretty the stone was. I kiddingly inquired as to where I would have to look to find one. As we were speaking, his brother found another stone in the bushes. I jokingly said that everyone found a stone but me. Next thing I knew, the young boy who found the initial stone, reached out to give me his. His mother assured me that if he wanted to give it to me, that I should take it. So, I want to say thanks to the young child, (Nathan?) for being so giving, thoughtful, and kind. Those are attributes that are missing today in people.
You will always be in my thoughts! A great lunch was prepared for the crew by members of the Avon Zion Episcopal Church. It was excellent and so energizing as we returned to building after eating! Thank you! Habitat construction crew Thank you, Mercy EMS! Your open house on 8/24/19 was a great family event! My 3-yearold had so much fun and has been talking about it nonstop since we left! Bash from Home Depot did a wonderful job helping the kids with the crafts and everyone was so happy to be there. It’s so nice to see a free, family-oriented event for the kids!
we feel we can just take it because it’s there? Stop developing and leave some greenery! A July 26 rant discusses some of the global problems that “can be trickled down to overpopulation” but fails to credit some leaders that are profiting from addressing these issues. One book documents the millions [politician] takes in to pass legislation that promotes smoking – this curtails overpopulation after birth. Promotion of fossil fuel consumption while simultaneously reducing health care coverage helps reduce population on many fronts and will ultimately warm the earth to the point where the human species is eliminated.

Why are all the cars parked on the street? It’s very hard to drive down some of them because cars are on both sides. An emergency vehicle certainly couldn’t. I think tickets need to be issued since common sense is in short supply! I would like to remind my neighbors that it is neighborly to pick up after your dog when walking them. I picked up three piles of dog poop from my front yard this morning, and I don’t have a dog. Please be considerate of the people in your neighborhood. I am sure everyone would appreciate it.
