HOW TO KEEP CHICKEN FROM STICKING TO YOUR GRILL

According to the grill manufacturer Weber, the keys to grilling chicken are temperature and time. But even cooks who have paid close attention to the temperature of their grills and the time their chicken spends over a hot flamehavenodoubtfallenvictimtochickenthatstickstothegrill.Thiscan affect the quality of a meal and make post-grilling cleanup that much more difficult. To prevent sticking, Weber advises cooks to put a light coating of olive oil and seasoning directly on the chicken prior to putting it on the grill. Once the chicken has been dressed, make sure the grill temperature remainsaround425Fto450F.Chickenwillsticktoagrillifthetemperature is too high, so pay close attention to the temperature at all times. Once the chicken has been placed on the grill, allow each side to cook for roughly 4.5 minutes. Here’s my idea; If banks can place exploding dye packets in bags of money, why can’t a similar device be placed in vehicles? Safe for the owners but explode when attempts are made to steal a vehicle. Thus the criminals can be located. Simple idea.

In response to the senior citizens who “really doesn’t know why people insist on bringing their dogs” to music in the park. It is because they are beloved members of the family. Just as you might bring a grandchild, others love their dogs and want to share good times with them and enrich their furry family members’ lives by including them in activities. If the presence of anyone else, human or canine, bothers you, there’s always the option of staying home. Please don’t begrudge others enjoying themselves. Live and let live… and don’t whine. I hear garlic is easy to grow around here. Do you have any tips for success?

Those who grow ‘their own’ know that homegrown produce tastes better than those bought at supermarket. This is also true for garlic! Garlic is one of the easiest vegetables to grow if a few critical requirements such as good soil, sufficient moisture, and correct planting and harvesting time are met.

This year’s spring was dry and irrigating the garlic helped greatly to keep it healthy while sizing up the bulbs. The leaf mold mulch we used kept the moisture in until the rains began in June. Coming July, it’s time to harvest your garlic crop!

There are two main types of garlic:

hardneck and softneck. Hardnecks form fewer but bigger cloves located around a hard central stem. The stem develops a curling top called a scape. Softneck garlic forms a higher number of cloves, the bigger ones are on the outside and smaller ones on the inside of the bulb. Softnecks tend to mature a week earlier than hardnecks. If you are growing Softneck Garlic, you need to look and see that at least 50% of it has fallen over and is laying on the ground. Then you know that your softneck garlic is ready to harvest.

Hardneck is usually ready in mid–July. Pull a few plants every few days and cut

a cross section of the bulb. Once you see space forming between the cloves and the central stem, your garlic is ready for harvest.

Harvest by prying up the entire plant with a garden fork or shovel. Don’t shake or bang against the ground, instead, remove the soil by rubbing it off gently with your fingers. Let the bulbs dry off thoroughly in a single layer in the sun on the ground for a couple of days. Hang

or lay them down on shelves, window screens etc. with a good air flow to dry. Clean off when fully dry 2-3 weeks after harvest. This is also time to cut the roots. Keep your garlic in a low humidity, wellventilated location with a temperature of 60 to 65*F.

MORCILLA CON SETAS (BLOOD SAUSAGE WITH MUSHROOMS, SPRING PEAS AND MINT OIL)

Serves 4

1 pound morcilla blood sausage

1 pound mushrooms, sliced

2 tablespoons olive oil

4 cloves garlic, slivered

Salt and pepper to taste

2 tablespoons white wine

1 cup shelled spring peas

1 tablespoon chopped fresh mint

2 tablespoons mint oil

Mint Oil

1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil

1/2 cup chopped mint

Pinch of salt

Cut the blood sausage into 12 slices. Sauté the mushrooms in olive oil with garlic, salt and pepper for 5 minutes. Add the wine and cook for 2 more minutes. Boil the peas for 2 minutes and drain. When mushrooms are done, remove from heat and stir in the peas.

In a cast-iron skillet, sear the morcilla in a dry pan for 2 minutes per side. Arrange the slices of morcilla down the middle of a platter. Surround with mushroom/pea mixture and drizzle the plate with the mint oil.

For the mint oil: In a small saucepan over medium heat, heat olive oil to warm. Remove from heat and add the mint and a small pinch of salt. Allow to rest for 1 hour. Drain through a sieve. Reserve extra mint oil for other uses, such as vinaigrette.

National Play Outside Day is the rst Saturday each month. e next one is Saturday, August 5th. What is National Play Outside Day? On the rst Saturday, everybody in the nation plays outside, packing away cellphones and electronic devices. Put social media on pause and go outside and play, leaving monotony, work, and stress behind you.

Mother Nature is waiting for you and is eager to open her treasure chest of beauty, adventure, and exploration. is is the perfect opportunity to branch out to nearby trails, attractions, and recreational fun. ere is no limit to the resources near you. Get ready to stimulate your imagination!

As we move from the modern world of overstimulation, noise, pollution, and indoor air (which has been proven to retain a higher concentration of viruses as compared with outdoor air), our mental clarity resets and our immune function boosts tremendously. Check out their exciting programs for animal lovers of all ages, such as Pet First Aid and CPR, a very helpful lesson in providing rst aid measures to pets until you can get to the vet. Or check out the Egypt Park Playground, frequently visited by parents with young children. Down the road in Macedon you can also access the RS&E Trolley Trail for a more energetic experience. e total length is 8.8 miles. Many bird watchers and hikers love this place, and it is very popular with cross country skiers. Additional resources include Victor Hiking Trails, Inc. and Crescent Trail Hiking.

When the temperature soars, head to Durand Eastman Beach on Lake Ontario for a dip. Located on Lakeshore Boulevard, there are also picnic areas and trails. If you’re ready to be immersed in woodlands, wetlands, and stream crossings, the scenic Erie Canal Trail is a must. Whether on bike or on foot, this picturesque pathway will not disappoint! Eateries along the canal o er tasty options and a chance to unwind.

Perhapsdiscoveranew-to-youpark.OneofMonroeCountyParks’ best kept secrets, Oatka Creek park in Wheatland is touted as one of the more “strollable” in the Monroe County Park system on its beautiful 3.3 mile loop trail, perfect for observing wild owers and birds and insects that surround you. Stop in to the park for a quiet nature retreat.

Check out Brockport’s incredible Alpine Adventure Zone Natural Playground on the eastern side of Northampton Park. Or perhaps bike, walk, or run through the “Lightning Tree” aka “ e Tree of Life” at Genesee Valley Park in Rochester. From the Genesee Valley Park, you can also launch a kayak to explore the Erie Canal or Genesee River. Check out the 14-acre Centennial Park in Batavia, with its weekly summer concerts and famous sledding spots in winter.

We are truly blessed with natural refuges in the Rochester area. Whatever you decide to do this Play Outside Day, make outdoor time a priority, a good habit to nurture. Some people prefer the solitude of outdoor time to re ect on life and restore balance. Others look at outdoor time as a more social experience to encourage positive interactions. Finding time to read more may be difficult during spring, summer and fall, when parents must contend with their own hectic schedules as well as their children’s. Even individuals without children or empty nesters may find it difficult to carve out time to read in a typical day. But people who aspire to read more can take a book to the beach or out on the deck on a warm afternoon or evening. Leave the smartphone inside so you can relax and read distraction-free.

What Expecting Parents Can Do To Make Their Homes Safer

• Conceal cables and cords. Cable and cord concealers are inexpensive and easily installed. Often used to cover cords hanging down from mounted televisions, concealers also can be used to hide cords coming from computers, lamps and other items that can pose a threat to young children.

• Avoid hand-me-down kids’ furniture. The older a piece of furniture is, the less likely it is that the item will meet current safety guidelines. Some parents may be tempted to let their children sleep in the same crib they slept in as kids decades ago, but it’s safer to eschew nostalgia in favor of products that meet the latest safety standards.

• Get rid of potential choking hazards. Prior to bringing their babies home, expecting parents can remove all small trinkets and other items that curious children may want to put in their mouths. WOMEN IN STEM

Despite the widely held notion that men exceed the number of women in Science, Technology, EngineeringandMathfields,data indicates that there isn’t actually much disparity among the sexes. According to the National Science Foundation, women equal men in terms of bachelor’s degrees awarded in most of the fields of STEM, including biosciences, social sciences, mathematics, and physical sciences. The only STEM fields in which men still outnumber women are computer science and engineering. Women are just as capable as men to meet the demands of STEM careers. Raw IQ tests from the British Psychological Society have indicated that women and men frequently score equally well, with some studies suggesting women have the edge. In terms of mathematics prowess, girls score a mere 3 percent lower than their male counterparts on themathportionoftheScholastic Aptitude Test, according to the College Board.

Boredom is certainly one of the worst of afflictions. Try to imagine how the dreary hours must drag when one is totally bored! Happily, there is no reason why anyone should ever be bored. In this wonderful world there are so many wonders we can explore… so many more delightful things to know about than we can possibly investigate.

It starts with childhood. The curious child is happy as he inquires and learns. There is no reason why we should ever lose this childlike thirst for knowledge, especially since curiosity leads to happiness.

Heart Attacks Occur After Treatment of Infections

DEAR DR. ROACH: My mom had a throat and palate infection that was treated in 2017, and about two weeks later, she had a heart attack. In 2023, she had pneumonia, and was briefly hospitalized and treated, but again about two weeks later, she had another heart attack. We asked her cardiologist if there is a relationship between either the infections themselves or the treatment of infections and heart attacks, but he was not aware of any. This seems too unlikely to be a coincidence. What is your experience on this? -- A.C.S.

ANSWER: A heart attack happens when the demand for blood from the heart is greater than the ability of the blood vessels can provide. In practice, this almost always means that there are blockages in the blood vessels. However, an increase in the workload of the heart, such as strenuous exercise or an infection (fever tends to increase heart rate, and the blood flow from the heart usually increases with serious infection), can be what leads a person to have a heart attack. It’s possible that this is what happened with your mom. The timing of two weeks after the event is longer than expected, but it’s possible. Whether from chronic infection or inflammatory conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, inflammation in the blood increases the risk of heart disease in the long term, so if there is a connection, and it’s not just coincidental, that would be the most likely cause. ***

DEAR DR. ROACH: You wrote about the dangers of testosterone replacement in men over 70 in your column a few months ago. Could you please describe the dangers of this again?

My husband is 73 and injects testosterone every 10 days or so. He’s not feeling too well overall, but he doesn’t know why. He’s been to the cardiologist, but the studies came back fine. He says he feels nerves in his stomach and a bit of shortness of breath. He’s also tired and without much energy. -- E.D. ANSWER: There are clear dangers with excess testosterone use, especially in older men. Some men use very high doses of testosterone or other androgens for muscle building, and this can cause heart damage, blood clots and stroke. I strongly do not recommend doing this, but it is generally used illicitly. By contrast, for men in whom testosterone therapy is given appropriately, the dangers are quite small, and in most men, the benefits outweigh the risks. Men should have a clear reason to receive testosterone therapy, such as having low bone density, low libido, loss of body hair, or development of breast tissue, in addition to repeatedly low testosterone levels (including a level taken between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. when testosterone levels are highest). In these men, the goal is to stabilize the testosterone level, and the risks of the catastrophic outcomes listed above appear to be very small, or even zero. Testosterone levels should also be measured during therapy. I can’t speculate on the cause behind your husband’s symptoms. Nonspecific symptoms, such as low energy, can be caused by low testosterone, but unless there are more specific symptoms of low testosterone, I generally do not recommend testosterone replacement.

Get a healthier glow. Many people equate health and vitality to tan skin. However, spending time outdoors in the sun or using indoor tanning beds that expose you to UV rays can increase your risk of skin cancer, including dangerous melanoma. The American Cancer Society says melanoma will account for more than 73,000 cases of invasive skin cancer in 2015. Melanoma accounts for more than 9,900 of the roughly 13,000 skin cancer deaths each year. Sunless tanners and bronzers can give skin that sun-kissed look without the downside of exposure to UV rays. Those who must go out in the sun should wear a wide-brimmed hat and limit their exposure between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when the sun’s rays are at their strongest.

FOODS TO AVOID FOR DENTAL HEALTH

Some foods and drinks cause more plaque buildup than others. Sugary foods cause oral bacteria to release acids that wear down tooth enamel, causing tooth decay and cavities. Some foods are worse than others. Sour candies contain extra acids and stick to your teeth longer. Saliva breaks bread down into sugars than can be just as hard on your teeth as sweet treats and may also stick to your teeth longer than other foods.

Alcoholic beverages dry out your mouth,reducing the saliva that helps repair tooth enamel and prevents bacteria from sticking to your teeth. Carbonated beverages also reduce saliva and contain high levels of acid. Citrus fruits, potato chips, and dried fruitareotherfoodstoavoid.

Statistics from U.S. Youth Soccer indicate that millions of children across the country are taking to the sport that was once primarily associated with Europe and other parts of the world beyond the United States. According to U.S. Youth Soccer, more than three million youth players were registered to play soccer in 2014. That marks an amazing increase from just 40 years earlier, when barely more than 100,000 youths registered to play soccer. While the reasons behind the growing popularity of soccer within the United States are not officially known, one might reasonably trace American youths’ embrace of the sport to the U.S. Men’s National Team’s appearance in the 1990 World Cup. Though the team was defeated in each of its three matches in the 1990 World Cup, the appearance marked the United States’ first since 1950. In fact, participation in youth soccerintheUnitedStatesin 2014 marked an 89 percent increase since 1990. In addition, the United States hosted the 1994 World Cup, likely generating even more interest in soccer, which many American youths now consider their favorite sport.

DIFFERENT GENERATIONS CAN LEARN AND BENEFIT FROM ONE ANOTHER

In the not-so-distant past, extended families frequently lived in close proximity to one another. Such families shared meals and experiences and essentially grew up together. Nowadays, families separate for various reasons, such as job opportunities and cost of living concerns. While there are advantages to spreading out, there are also some disadvantages, namely that grandparents and grandchildren may not see one another frequently enough. Even though people of different age groups may not entirely have the same interests, the interactions between generations can benefit both young people and their aging relatives. Fostering intergenerational connections is a great way to broaden social circles, improve communication and learn new things.

WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT CAT REPRODUCTION

Cat pet parents must be especially diligent in their quest to squelch reproduction to help control cat populations. According to The Spruce: Pets, female cats that are not spayed will come into estrus (heat) as early as age four months. The animal health resource BondVet says a cat can go into heat as often as every two to three weeks. Generally, though, cats are seasonal breeders, indicates the United Kingdom-based RSPCA, which means heat cycles slow down in autumn.Another thing to note is that cats do not enter menopause like people and other animals. That means a female cat can continue to reproduce well into her senior years.

Cat’s frequent vomiting a cause for concern

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My 10-year-old shorthaired cat Vic has always had a sensitive stomach. About once a week, he would vomit right a er eating. However, in the past couple of weeks, he has vomited every other day, at least. I feed him a canned food for senior pets along with a handful of dry kibble each day. Changing the type of food doesn’t seem to help. Is it time to call the vet? -- Carolyn K., Gatlinburg, Tennessee

DEAR CAROLYN: I think your instinct is right on. A sudden change in a pet’s daily patterns o en indicates that something is going on. Contact the veterinarian, who will schedule Vic for an exam within a couple of days. ey will look for possible signs of illness or injury.

It’s possible that nothing will turn up on the exam. at’s good, because it rules out more serious issues. But the vet will have you be more observant than usual and look for additional symptoms like lethargy, insistent meowing or continued frequent vomiting. ey’ll also have you monitor his water intake to make sure he’s not getting dehydrated.

ey will also probably recommend an entirely di erent brand of wet cat food, or even a prescription food on a temporary basis. is ensures that Vic continues getting the nutrition a senior cat needs.

ink about any changes to Vic’s environment that took place recently. Did you bring a new pet into the home, or a new person? Was a room redecorated? Did you travel for a few days? Anxiety can cause noticeable changes in a pet’s behavior. Also, were any potential toxins introduced, such as a pest control treatment or a new carpet installation? Write down any possibilities.

Maintains accurate screening, ongoing assessment, classroom, educational and family contact records and prepares reports at direction of program Leadership Team. Year-round, 40 hours per week. Requirements: Infant and Toddler Child Development Associate (CDA) credential or comparable credential with training or coursework in early childhood development with a focus on infant and toddler development. Candidates currently enrolled in a CDA or related program that will be completed within 1 year may be considered. Two years’ experience related to caring for children, one of which must be related to caring for infants or toddlers.

Teacher Assistant (Aide) & Cleaner - Batavia

Responsibilities: Direct work with children in classroom, on bus and performing tasks such as sanitizing. Entry level positions for those interested in early childhood education. Responsible for basic janitorial tasks including classrooms and common areas. School year, 32.5 hours per week. Requirements: High school diploma required. Some experience with children age birth – preschool is expected and some janitorial skills preferred.

Kitchen Assistant - Batavia

Responsibilities: Assists in preparation and delivery of meals for children. Washes dishes, pots and pans, cleans and sanitizes kitchen; cover for Cook in his/her absence; may include heavy li ing (50 lbs.), bending and li ing. School year, 33 hours per week.

WORKPLACE GIFTING ETIQUETTE: GET GIVING RIGHT

Giftgivingintheworkplacecanbe challenging territory to navigate. And as anyone who has received an inappropriate gift or something that really wasn’t useful can attest, he or she probably doesn’t want to face a situation in which a gift leads to office gossip.

According to a poll conducted by Harris, around half of workers plan to gift at least one business associate around the holidays but are confused about what to give. Too often it’s up to workers to navigate these etiquette minefields on their own, but the following tips can help the process go smoothly.

Keep it impersonal. Impersonal doesn’t mean it’s acceptable to grabanythingofftheshelf.Butthe gift should not be something that wouldoffendtastesorsentiments. Avoid clothing, perfume, jewelry, or accessories. Lotions and other scented items are also ill-advised. Skip your boss. Etiquette experts say that gifts should flow downward not upward in the realm of employment ranking. That means it’s best to stick with gifting colleagues who are on the same level as you. Buying a gift for the boss may look like you’re simply trying to score brownie points instead of offering a meaningful gift.

Give group gifts. Rather than gifting individuals, it can be safer to give a group gift from which many can benefit. This can include coffee and pastries from a nearby bakery, or a bouquet of flowers to brighten up the office environment.

Keep prices modest. Office giving is not about illustrating who can afford the most expensive gift. Remember, some people will not be able to reciprocate, and they shouldn’t feel uncomfortable for being on the receiving end of a lavish gift.

Follow the rules. Gift exchanges shouldbeclearedwithsupervisors or human resources professionals. Itpaystocheckiftherearerulesin place for gifting others. Avoid cash gifts. Giving cash or checks is not a good idea. Money should only come by way of bonuses from higher-ups. If you’re stuck on what to give, a gift card to a store that a coworker visits is acceptable.
