They’re easy to hold and help keep your favorite toppings contained. * Up-cycle an empty six-pack container into a convenient cookout caddy to hold napkins, condiments and utensils. Not only is it quick to grab and place on the table, but it helps keep napkins from blowing away in a breeze. * For kabobs, keep wooden skewers from charring by soaking them in water before threading on ingredients. * Prepare toppings the night before and arrange them in a disposable foil pan for a quick and easy DIY topping bar.

In 2015, 24 percent of employed people in the United States did some or all of their work at home, says the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Bringing work home means men and women will need a space to work. In tight quarters, bedrooms may be the only available area. An armoirestyle desk will blend in with the decor and can hide paperwork and electronics behind doors. Otherwise, a makeup vanity can serve the dual purpose of providing a place to get ready for a night out and a ready space to house a laptop during the day.

Ascochyta leaf blight Lawns suffering from ascochyta leaf blight will become straw-colored. According to the lawn care and pesticide experts at Ortho®, when a lawn is affected by ascochyta leaf blight, its healthy grass blades will be mixed in with diseased grass blades. Most prevalent in the spring, this disease can affect grass at any time during the growing season. That’s because the ascochyta fungi invade leaf blades through wounds, such as those that can result from mowing. Ortho® notes that dull lawn mowers can contribute to the disease, which might disappear on its own and can even return after it’s seemingly been cured.

111 CEDAR ST. • BATAVIA • 585-343-4899 www.cedarstreetonline.com REASONS TO PLANT A TREE There are plenty of reasons to plant trees. Trees provide a natural form of shade, reducing air temperature by blocking the sun’s rays. This can reduce reliance on air conditioning systems and make it more comfortable to spend time outdoors during the summer. North Carolina State University College of Agriculture & Life Sciences says trees absorb and block noise and reduce glare. They also can trap dust, pollen and smoke. Trees also absorb carbon dioxide and potentially harmful gasses from the air. One large tree can supply a day’s worth of oxygen for as many as four people, while also storing 13 pounds of carbon per year. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

POTENTIAL CULPRITS BEHIND THINNING GRASS

SMART TECHNOLOGY

Leaf spot The Center for Agriculture, Food and the Environment at the University of Massachusetts Amherst notes that leaf spot diseases affect both cool- and warm-season turfgrasses. Various fungi can cause leaf spot. Symptoms and the timing of the appearance of leaf spot will vary depending on which fungi is causing the problem. For example, bipolaris sorokiniana, which affects grasses in warm, wet summer months, produces small spots that are dark purple to black. Dreschslera poae is another fungi that causes leaf spot, and it also produces dark purple to black spots. However, it tends to appear in the spring when the weather is cool and moist. Understanding the different fungi and when they typically strike can help homeowners identify what is causing their grass to thin. In such situations, professional landscapers can be invaluable resources as well.

Home security: Wi-Fi enabled doorbells with video capabilities allow residents to see who is at the door without having to open it. Cameras can even be accessed remotely, simulating that someone is at home at all times. Never wonder if you’ve locked the door again with smart locks that can be engaged via a smartphone. Make sure that homes are secured or that pets are behaving while out with smart cameras.

Alarming Rate of False Positives Plagues Lung Cancer Screening ---

Discover the Human Touch in Hearing Technology

Accepting New Patients.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m a 74-year-old female who smoked a pack a day for 40-plus years, having quit smoking about 18 years ago. As a precaution, I asked my primary doctor to order a screening CT scan, knowing that I’m a candidate for lung cancer. The results showed a 3-mm nodule in one lung, and I was advised not to worry and that my doctor would order another CT scan in six months. I can’t help but wonder if this is cancer and if an oncologist, after six months, will ask me why I waited so long to see him. -- T.W. ANSWER: Medical professionals have been attempting to screen for lung cancer for decades. Chest X-rays proved insensitive: By the time cancer could be seen on X-ray, it was usually too late to do anything about it. CT scans are much more sensitive (maybe too sensitive; see below), and studies have shown that some lives will be saved with a screening program. However, the number of people who would benefit is relatively small. 256 moderate-to-heavy smokers would need yearly screening for three years in order to prevent one lung cancer death. There are two other significant concerns about lung cancer screening. The first is the issue you have now: an abnormal result and what to do about it. It’s extremely common. Almost 25% of scans will be abnormal, and 96% of the abnormal results will be false positives. But it will require multiple scans, and sometimes an invasive procedure, to prove it. This means a great deal of anxiety among people who get the type of result you did. The small size of your nodule means the risk that this nodule is cancerous is much lower than 1%. A follow-up scan is the usual recommendation, and if the nodule is the same size or smaller, the chance of it being cancerous is very close to zero. You should have had a careful explanation of the likelihood of false positive results before getting the scan. You also should have been warned of the possible need for a biopsy and the possible financial costs associated with follow-up testing. The second concern is that current smokers who consider screening should receive intensive advice and help in quitting smoking. A negative CT scan is not a “clean bill of health” for a smoker, and quitting remains to be the single most important thing most smokers can do for their overall health. ***

RECOGNIZE POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS HOUSEHOLD CHEMICALS All-purpose cleaners: Many cleaners list bleach and ammonia among their ingredients. Bleach may be listed as sodium hypochlorite. When used as directed in a well-ventilated space, bleach and ammonia can be relatively safe. However, fumes from bleach or ammonia can cause rashes and skin irritation and irritate the eyes and respiratory tract. Bleach and ammonia should never be mixed because mixing the two can produce a deadly chloramine gas. Vinegar and baking soda can be used as a replacement for many household cleaning products, and these alternatives have virtually no dangerous side effects.

Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy

THE FINE ART OF FLOSSING It takes less than 24 hours for plaque to form, so it’s crucial to floss at least once daily. Plaque forms under the gum line and between teeth where it’s impossible to remove with a toothbrush. That’s why it’s important to bring floss under the gumline to remove plaque. Start with 18 inches of floss wrapped around your middle fingers. Gently move the floss between your teeth and under the gunline, rather than snapping it into place, which can irritate the gums. Press the floss into your gumline and then form a C-shape that wraps around the tooth. Gently move the floss up and down both sides of your tooth. Don’t forget to floss the outside of your last molars.

HEEL SPUR SYNDROME/PLANTAR FASCIITIS is a common problem among people who are active. It starts as a dull intermittent pain in the heel and progresses to a sharp persistent pain. Classically, it is worse in the morning with the first few steps, after sitting, after standing or after walking. • Plantar fasciitis often begins with irritation and tearing of the fibrous band of tissue on the bottom of the foot, which may eventually result in the formation of a heel spur. • Contributing factors: Flat pronated feet, high arched feet, poor shoe support, increase age, sudden weight increase, increased activity level, family tendency. • 95% of our patients’ symptoms are resolved with conservative treatment, avoiding surgical intervention. • We also offer surgical procedures with the best post op success rates using Endoscopic Plantar Fasciotomy techniques (minimal incisions and scarring; often back in a shoe in 1 week).

Catholic Charities’ Home Visitation Program Receives $65,000 from Rochester Area Community Foundation BY LAURA E. JACOBS

atholic Charities has received a $65,000 grant from the Muriel H. Marshall Fund for the Aging of Rochester Area Community Foundation to continue to support Genesee County residents through its Home Visitation Program, which provides weekly visits to homebound adults 60+ who live independently or with family. Catholic Charities has been receiving funding since 2010, when it first launched its Home Visitation Program. The purpose of the program is to bring a sense of connectivity and friendship to program members. Volunteers engage in friendly conversation, partake in hobbies and special interests such as reading, crafts, baking or card games. Visits also may include phone calls. This grant is for a one-year period. “Due to physical restrictions or one’s shrinking social circles, seniors are more likely to become socially isolated and experience loneliness and depression,” said Linda Chadderdon, program manager for Catholic Charities’ Home Visitation program. “Thanks to the continued support from the Muriel H. Marshall Fund for the Aging, we are giving seniors throughout Genesee County a chance to feel connected again through weekly visits, conversation, and friendship.” Rochester Area Community Foundation engages philanthropists and community partners to improve its eight-county region by promoting philanthropy that helps to create an equitable community and strengthen the region’s vitality. Since 1972, the Community Foundation has awarded more than $590 million in grants and scholarships. For more information, visit racf.org. Yesterday, our beloved corgi mix, Shemp, was laid to rest. I feel so guilty. He passed from heatstroke after being out in the backyard for just one hour. I never realized that just the heat outdoors could be deadly to dogs. I always was conscientious about dangerous situations; I never once left Shemp in a hot car or walked him on hot sidewalks. Yet a few minutes of inattention, and my Shemp was suddenly in great distress. I rushed him to the veterinarian, but he just didn’t make it. Please warn your readers to keep their dogs inside on hot days and to monitor them closely for signs of heat stress. -- Devastated in Houston Dear Devastated: I am so sorry for the loss of your beloved Shemp. Thank you for warning other readers of the dangers of summer heat. Being outdoors during the extreme temperatures that we’ve experienced this summer, often passing 100 degrees in many states, is dangerous for dogs and other pets. Here are a few ways to keep them safe from heat injury. -- Walk dogs before sunrise and after sunset. Under a hot sun, sidewalks can quickly burn a dog’s paws, and heat and humidity can take a toll on their health. -- Do not leave pets outside unsupervised. Even if they’re just in the backyard, you might not notice their distress until it’s too late. -- Provide a shelter from the sun. A shelter with open sides and a solid top allows airflow and protects from the sun when your dog is outside. -- Make water available all day, everywhere. Carry water on walks, keep their indoor bowl full and provide a water bowl outside. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Games for Brain Training Cognitive brain training can keep our cognitive abilities functioning better for 10 years. The Advanced Cognitive Training for Independent and Vital Elderly (ACTIVE) is not a new study, but it bears looking at for what it offers seniors in terms of cognitive abilities. The government-funded study followed 2,832 seniors with an average age of 73 after they completed 10 training sessions and four booster sessions 11 and 35 months after the initial training. Participants were divided into four groups: memory training, reasoning training, speed of processing training and a control group with no training. What the study aimed to look at was cognitive abilities and performance in everyday activities, and they collected updated data at the one, two, three, five and 10-year points in the study. What researchers concluded was that seniors reported less decline in cognitive abilities for 10 years in the reasoning and speed portions, not the memory, which dropped off after five years. All this in only 10 training sessions plus four booster sessions? Authentic brain training programs can be found online but generally require a monthly fee. There are others, however, that we can sample for free to create our own training program. Try the dozen brain games at www.mentalup.co/blog/free-brain-games-for-seniors to see if you like these types of challenges. Look online for “free senior brain games,” and you’ll find many sites with free games to play without having to give any personal information or pay a fee. The best “brain stretching” might come from doing a variety of games. Choose from crossword, jigsaw, sudoku, chess, mazes, word puzzles, logic and more, switching around from day to day. Or go to Amazon.com and look for puzzle books. Look at the sample pages to see if they look too easy or too hard. For a great challenge, look for online Scrabble games where you play against the computer! (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

Traffic comes to a halt due to construction, but must we lay on the horns and curse at each other while we all sit in traffic? I can’t believe how nasty drivers have become all because there’s construction. F-bombs and horns are blowing with no one able to move. People have changed for the worst. This is no longer a sweet town with sweet people. You anger someone in a car, and you’ll get flipped off or crashed into or cussed out. Why? Please stop this behavior. We are all stuck in traffic, and no one is going to move any faster with swear words and horns.

Nope, right on my “butt.” If a deer runs out and I have to hit my brakes, guess what’ll happen? If the speed limit is too slow for you, just pass. What ever happened to common sense?

Small businesses have such a big impact on their communities, and the world at large, that it might be time to reconsider refering to them as “small.” According to the World Bank, small businesses have a major impact on the world economy, especially in emerging countries. In such nations, small and medium enterprises contribute up to 60 percent of total employment and up to 40 percent of national income. Small businesses figure to frame their economies in emerging countries in the coming decades, and they’re already doing so in developed nations, such as the United States and Canada.

Why is my lawn is turning brown while my neighbors aren’t, even though neither of us irrigate? On any given turf area or in a neighborhood, we can see a wide variety of responses to the current drought. Following is a list of factors

from Cornell Cooperative Extension, Livingston County that will affect how fast a turf shows droughty symptoms or dormancy: • Species: Tall fescue is one of the last to show drought symptoms, many days to weeks following bluegrass or perennial ryegrass. Since dormancy is a survival mechanism, Kentucky bluegrass and perennial ryegrass tend to survive drought better • Mowing height: Higher the mowing height, deeper the roots and the better the ability to find water lower in the soil, but the higher mowing height has to be established in the spring • Compaction/heavy soils: Compacted soils force shallow rooting • Sodded lawns tend to show drought faster

than seeded lawns because sod tends to have less root density than seeded lawns of the same cultivar and species, primarily due to soil texture differences between sod field and lawn • High fertility or heavily irrigated will show drought symptoms faster • Spring fertilizer vs heavy fall fertilizer: Better rooting with heavy fall fertilizer • Shade from an abiotic source like a building tends to keep area cooler and turf will retain

color longer • Shade from a biotic source like a tree will compete with turf for the water and turf always loses • Heavy traffic areas tend to show dormancy faster • Thick thatch leads to shallow rooting in the thatch and very rapid drought symptoms • Insect (grub) feeding or patch diseases also enhance dormancy symptoms

Jane P. LaPree June 24, 2022 Scottsville/Canandaigua: Jane passed peacefully on June 24, 2022. She is survived by her daughter, Michele Long and her son, Thomas LaPree. She is predeceased by her husband, Cliff and son, Timothy. She will be remembered as kind and loving by both her extended family and many friends. Jane’s life will be celebrated at a memorial service on Monday, August 8th, 10am at The United Church, Canandaigua with same day graveside burial at 3pm at the Garbuttsville Cemetery, Scottsville, NY. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in her name to the Union Presbyterian Church in Scottsville, The United Church in Canandaigua, United Cerebral Palsy of Rochester, or ARC of Monroe. UNDERSTANDING LIFE INSURANCE Choosing coverage. When choosing how much coverage to purchase, it’s easy to go overboard and aim for as much as possible. However, many financial advisors suggest purchasing enough coverage to pay for funeral costs and a level of income replacement you can comfortably afford. If your spouse does not work, you should consider purchasing enough coverage so he or she can afford to pay the family’s day-to-day cost of living expenses.

Tom was a longtime faithful member of the LaGrange Baptist Church where he built their Baptistery. He was a fan of all kinds of racing especially NASCAR. Tom belonged to a racing crew, racing at Perry Speedway all through the 60’s. He was a quiet man but dedicated to supporting his family in every way. Tom was preceded by his sister, Nancy Mooney, and two brothers, Roger and Allen Pease. Survivors include his beloved wife of 55 years, Fay A. Howard Pease, whom he married on November 5, 1966. Also surviving are two daughters, Alice I. Pease of Pavilion, Della F. (Steve) Merritt of Batavia, a brother, James H. “Worry never solved a problem…” ~ Frederic Harrison There are probably very few of us who don’t let worry get the best of us from time to time. It’s perfectly natural that we tend to be concerned with the problems that affect us. But, it would be strange, indeed, if we didn’t make an effort to correct the situations that upset the equanimity of our lives. However, worry over matters beyond our control only serves to add more stress and unpleasantness to the normal quotas of worries we must deal with in everyday life. It may be helpful to realize that most of our worries never really materialize! Our staff is qualified to provide answers to your questions regarding Social Security or Veteran’s benefits. Phone for information or for an appointment, at our office or in your home if you prefer. No obligation.

Flower Meanings If you would like to customize your arrangement of funeral flowers further, there are more flower meanings that might express your sentiments in this time of grief and remembrance. Though they may not be the traditional funeral flowers, any flowers that share your sympathy with the bereaved and celebrate the deceased’s memory are appropriate for a funeral. The xeranthemum symbolizes eternity and immortality. Cyclamens say “goodbye”¤? and forget-me-nots send a message of faithful love and memories. Marjoram conveys comfort and consolation. The nasturtium celebrates patriotism. If you are aware of flowers that were a favorite of the deceased or that a member of the bereaved family particularly favors, those blooms may also be a good choice for a funeral gift. Whatever flowers you choose to send, your thoughtful message of sympathy will certainly be a comfort to those who are mourning the loss of a loved one.

CHALLENGES OF GOING REMOTE WITH YOUR BUSINESS CUSTOMER SERVICE: Ensuring customers can seamlessly connect with your business, and your customer service staff in particular, should be a priority when switching to a remote work setting. Remote customer service employees won’t have the direct access to management and fellow team members that they had when working on-site, so business owners can employ central management platforms that make it easy to access information regarding new products and services and previous interactions with and responses to customers. That access can help solve issues while reducing the likelihood of substantial lag time as customer service employees wait to hear from coworkers and managers about how to respond to certain issues.

Building a strong professional network takes patience and hard work. But the right network can pay dividends for years to come.

RELIEVE STRESS THROUGHOUT THE DAY

CDL A TANKER POSITIONS

Stress affects people from all walks of life, and the causes of stress are as varied as the people it afflicts.

Home Daily

In its 2017 Stress in AmericaTM survey, the American Psychological Association found that the three most common sources of stress were the future of the nation (63 percent), money (62 percent) and work (61 percent). According to the National Institute of Mental Health, routine stress that becomes chronic can result in a host of negative side effects. Such stress can suppress the immune system, disrupt digestion and have an adverse effect on sleep. But men and women who feel stressed at the end of each day need not resign themselves to sleepless nights and/or weakened immune systems. A proactive approach to alleviating stress during the day can help men and women reduce their stress levels and avoid the negative side effects associated with chronic stress.

ADVICE FOR A SUCCESSFUL CAREER CHANGE Don’t choose a career based on salary alone. Monster.com says that being financially strategic when choosing a new career is important, but shouldn’t be the only factor. Your personal values, experience and other factors such as family should weigh heavily into your decision as well. Page 41

Keep water sanitary. Make sure pool water is chemically balanced so that it is comfortable to swim in and will not harbor any pathogens that can make swimmers ill. The pool equipment company Pahlen says the ideal water pH is 7.4 because that is the same as the pH in human eyes and mucous membranes, and it also supports good chlorine disinfection. The free chlorine content of a pool can range from 0.5 to 1.6 to keep it sanitary. A quality testing kit can help pool owners balance water.
