MOMENTS IN TIME * On Aug. 11, 1934, a group of federal prisoners classified as “most dangerous” arrives at Alcatraz Island, a 22-acre rocky outcrop situated 1 1/2 miles offshore in San Francisco Bay. The convicts were the first civilian prisoners to be housed in the new high-security penitentiary. (The History Channel)

W hat to Do w ith Your Old Electronics (Family Features) M obile phones, laptops, tablets, game consoles, cameras - electronic devices are a big part of American life. In fact, Americans ow n an average of 24 electronic products per household, according to the Consumer Electronics Association. W ith technology changing so rapidly and new “ it” devices hitting the market every few months, a lot of those devices get discarded quickly. That adds up to a lot of potential e-w aste. Fortunately, it’s easier than ever to keep old electronics out of the w aste stream. Donate. Donations give schools, nonprofits and low er-income families access to equipment they might not otherw ise afford. Before donating, check w ith the organization to see w hat they need. Trade Up. If you are ready to upgrade to something new, programs such as RadioShack’s Trade & Save let you sw ap retired technology for store credit tow ard your purchase. Recycle. Electronics in nonw orking condition should be recycled. Check w w w.Earth911.com or w w w.e-stew ards.org to find a recycling center near you. Don’t Forget the Batteries. Recycling your rechargeable batteries is another easy step you can take.
STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * Hans Steininger, who is said to have had the longest beard in the world, died in 1567 from tripping over that beard while running from a fire.
COMMON GRILLING MISTAKES

585-335-7902 REASONS TO SHOP FARMERS’ MARKETS Many farmers’ markets offer foods that are organically grown and are produced without GMOs. Farmers’ market retailers also tend to give firsthand accounts of where their foods come from and how they are grown or raised.
Playing with food: Grilling does not require much intervention. Repeatedly flipping and squeezing meat and poultry can cause flavorful juices to leak out. Then you’re left with dried-out food. Resist any urges to prod and poke food. And minimize how many times you lift the grill cover to take a peek, as that can cause temperatures to fluctuate. Use a thermometer to determine when food is done. And don’t forget that meat will still cook a bit after it’s taken off the grill. A life without love is like a year without summer. ~Swedish Proverb
NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Coffee filters make wonderful glass cleaners. They leave behind no streaks and no residual lint.
Take a moment to let a business owner know you saw their ad in the Penny Saver, tell a friend about an upcoming event or like any of our posts on social media. These small gestures make all the difference to us.
* Berries are in season, and there’s no greater time to stock up. But don’t feel like you have to make jam out of all the berries. Freeze in a single layer and transfer to a freezer-safe bag or container. Later they can be popped into muffins and quick breads, as well as eaten straight out of the bag for a delicious treat. * “Do you love burgers? Here’s a great thing our family does that saves money and is very handy: When ground beef goes on sale, we buy a large quantity and premake many burger patties, seasoned and shaped just as we like them. Then we separate them with butcher’s paper cut into squares. We put them in stacks, and then into empty bread bags to store in the freezer. When we are getting ready to cook out, the patties don’t have to be all the way defrosted, just put on the grill and cooked up!” -- A.J. in Florida * Okra, which is at its peak July through September, makes an excellent stew thickener. But it’s quite yummy on the grill as well, brushed with olive oil and lightly seasoned. Just be sure you don’t wash it until you are ready to use it. There’s a natural protective coating on it, and if you wash it off, it’ll get slimy. * Old socks can be fitted around the head of an old mop or Swiffer base. Spray with cleaner and clean away. When you are done, remove the sock and launder.

BANISH MOSQUITOES FROM YOUR YARD Inspect property for hidden pockets of water. While bird baths, pet bowls and kiddie pools are easy to find, homeowners may be unknowingly hosting mosquito breeding grounds elsewhere on their properties. For example, tarps used to cover pools, automobiles or grills that are not tightly secured can fold up, creating pockets where rain water can collect and give mosquitoes somewhere to breed. Mosquitoes also may use gutters to breed, so homeowners should routinely inspect and clean their gutters during spring and summer.

5122 Clinton St. Rd., Batavia (585) 343-0642 • www.terryhills.com DID YOU KNOW? Pizza continues to remain a popular comfort food and go-to staple for quick, family-friendly meals. Statistics Brain reports that 93 percent of Americans eat at least one piece of pizza per month. Five billion pizzas are sold worldwide each year, and the United States accounts for three billion of those pizzas. The average person will eat 46 slices of pizza each year. The world can thank Raffaele Esposito for creating the first pizza that resembled the pizza the world knows today. Esposito created the pizza for Italy’s Queen Margherita when she visited Naples in 1889. The crust was garnished with tomatoes, mozzarella and basil to represent the national colors of Italy: red, white and green.

CONTEMPLATING RETIREMENT? First…MAKE THESE LISTS! TIPS FROM LOCAL WRITER, DP DUNN
R
etirement: that goal of every hard-working American. Time to do—what exactly? Before you dive into that great unknown, give a bit of forethought, dare to dream and contemplate, cogitate and ruminate, even! Then, make your retirement lists. Lists are powerful tools. They help us to organize, prioritize, and even discard. Writing a list can be cathartic; lists get ‘stuff ’ like emotions or ideas out of our head, heart and mind, and onto paper where they can be handled differently. Writing makes ideas visual and real. Our daily work provides us with structure, money (always useful), socialization, connection, and purpose. It comes at a cost, however. When working, you do the bidding of others, like your boss, your clients, even your customers. You are paid for your time, ideas, labor, creativity, insight, and skill. It sounds great, but sometimes we desire change, renewal, and feel the need to explore. In retirement, you can become who you want to be or need to be beyond the context and confines of your career. As you contemplate that great retirement change, consider starting with a few lists:
List 1: Things you will miss A paycheck? Meaningful work? The structure of a daily routine? Intelligent conversation with smart, educated, well-read and interesting people? Solving problems and fixing things or processes? Free coffee? When you leave, there will be a void in your life. By identifying the ‘good stuff ’ at work, you can identify other ways to fill those pleasant voids. It is easier that you might think. Be creative. Ask other like-minded people you know who have already retired.
List 2: Things you don’t like This is easy. Simply list every aspect that causes you grief, worry, heartburn and headaches. No names or titles, please. ‘Jeff ’ in accounting might not think highly of you, either! This shouldn’t be personal; note activities, situations, or tasks that stress you to your limit, things that make you sad, angry or crazy. What hurts your spirit or does not fit with who you are or who you want to be? What holds you back or gets in your way? Write. Get it all out. There, that feels better!
List 3: Life events you have missed A wise person once wrote: “Show me your calendar, and I’ll show you your priorities.” While your relationship with your employer has been mutually beneficial, you have likely forfeited or delayed some of your life in exchange. You were compensated for your time, but what events were sacrificed? Your work calendar shows your work priorities. Now, look for the priorities that are missing from your calendar; see what is not there. First, list specific events you have missed because of work such as your child’s first words or first steps, a family reunion, a destination wedding, opportunities to sit quietly and contemplate, changes to create or renew important relationships or friendships. Maybe there are more events and experiences you’ve missed. Write them down and get these losses out of your head and your heart. Next, look for common themes within your listed items like Family & Friends, Travel, Exploration, Spirituality and Faith, Fitness, Organization, Downsizing, or the Pursuit of Hobbies and Pastimes. Now, you are ready to plan.

Each list has a purpose! List 1: The first list shows you what you need to retain post-retirement. A financial planner will help you analyze the cash-flow while addressing your missing paycheck and your insurance concerns. Social interaction: You may need to add some new friends. You can meet with the old friends from work when they’re available. Try not to gloat; they don’’t like that! Where will you meet new friends? And what about your ‘meaningful work and purpose’ goals? Considering your skills and knowledge developed during your career, perhaps you can volunteer or teach others to do what gave you joy and purpose for so many years. List 2: What is the purpose of the second list? That list is for six months after you leave. You might start thinking, “Gee, it wasn’t so bad. Maybe I should have stayed longer.” Stop! Pull out list number two and re-read it. Take a deep breath and feel affirmed in your decision. List 3: List number three is your roadmap. Look at what you missed and focus on filling your remaining time addressing those voids and deficits. You’re likely still young and healthy, interesting, and interested. Go forth! Do! Pursue what you wanted to when you didn’t have the time. Explore! Grow! Forethought and planning (Some may say daydreaming!) can help us prepare for change while growing in the right directions at the right times. At the same time, this roadmap is not cast in stone; modify it and make it your own. Time’s short, so prepare and live your best life. Mr. Dunn retired in 2020 mid-pandemic. He contemplates the profundities of the human condition, and why pickle jars can be so difficult to open, while sitting under a large willow tree, sipping a beer, enjoying summer breezes, and watching cars zip by his Webster, NY home. This is his second article for GVPS. Enjoy this article? When the weather warms, many people take to the outdoors to enjoy the sunshine and rising temperatures. Summer road trips or vacations are the norm, but it is important to realize that hot weather can take its toll even on a new, well-maintained vehicle. High temperatures can cause all sorts of damage to a vehicle, from zapping battery power to overtaxing the cooling system. Recognizing potential hotweather risks and performing routine checks on the vehicle are the keys to keeping vehicles in top form. STAY SAFE WHEN SELLING YOUR CAR Millions of people across the globe sell their used vehicles each year, and many of those sales go smoothly. But selling to strangers carries some risk, and sellers must consider their safety when putting their vehicles up for sale. Arrange to meet prospective buyers in public. While it can be inconvenient to drive to a public place each time a prospective buyer expresses interest in your vehicle, sacrificing convenience for security is worth the extra effort. Many people would not invite strangers to their homes under typical circumstances, so it makes no sense to do so when selling a vehicle. If possible, invite buyers to meet you in the parking lot of your office. Or if the car you’re selling is not the car you drive to work each day, then arrange to meet with buyers in a mall or grocery store parking lot. Meet buyers with a buddy in tow. There’s safety in numbers, so bring a friend or family member along when meeting prospective buyers. Many buyers won’t pose a threat to sellers, but some may be criminals looking to steal a vehicle or cause harm to sellers who are complete strangers. Criminals are less likely to attack or take advantage of two or more people than one person. And should anything go wrong with a sale, having a witness around to back up your version of sale terms cannot hurt. Let prospective buyers know you want to see some identification. When prospective buyers respond to your ad, let them know you will want to see some valid photo identification before you allow them to take the car for a test drive. Letting prospective buyers know this in advance of meeting them can prevent an awkward, potentially confrontational situation when you meet in person. Don’t be afraid to turn away buyers who seem suspicious. While your goal might be to sell your vehicle as quickly as possible, don’t hesitate to turn away prospective buyers who make you feel uneasy. If they insist on seeing the vehicle, hang up the phone after informing them you intend to contact the authorities. AUTOMOTIVE

How t o prot ect your car’s resale value Periodically examine the vehicle history report. Today’s preow ned c ar buyers know to ask for a vehicle history report before buying a c ar. If your vehic le history report c ontains any suspic ious or inac c urate information, you may be forced to sell the car for less than it’s w orth or delay selling until you can have any issues corrected. That w on’t necessarily happen overnight, but you can avoid dealing w ith a host of issues all at onc e by periodically examining the vehicle history report. Any discrepancies on the report can be brought to the attention of your insurance company, w ho can then w ork w ith you to correct the issues and restore your vehicle’s reputation.

HOW TO CONSERVE WATER AT HOME
IT'S FINALLY HERE… AIR CONDITIONING SEASON
Conservation is an essential component of an eco-friendly lifestyle. Conserving the planet’s natural resources can have a profound impact on the planet, and conserving at home is a great way for men and women to get the ball rolling on their conservation efforts. One of the most effective ways to conserve at home is to reduce water consumption. Few people give much thought to how much water they consume at home, as water bills tend to be considerably lower than other utilities like energy and phone. But even if efforts to conserve water at home may not make a dramatic impact on monthly utility bills, many measures can go a long way toward preserving one of the planet’s most precious resources.

Beat the heat during a summer wedding Wear breathable fabrics. Opt for lightweight fabrics instead of heavy gowns and full tuxedos for the bride, groom and wedding party. Cotton and linen allow air to flow through clothing, helping people to stay cool. Light colors also will help deflect the sun. Bridal gowns made of chiffon, silk or satin may feel luxurious and help tame the heat.

Scott Joplin (c. 1868-1917): Born into a musical family that included his mother, a singer and banjo player, and his father, a violist, Scott Joplin grew up in Texarkana, learning to play the guitar and later the piano at a very young age. By the time Joplin was a teenager, he was working as a traveling musician and eventually became the foremost composer of ragtime jazz. Biography.com notes that Joplin was a true student of music, studying at the George R. Smith College for Negroes in Missouri during the 1890s. Though one of history’s most celebrated jazz musicians, Joplin also composed ballets and operas.

ENJOYING THRILLS AT AMUSEMENT PARKS One attraction that is synonymous with fairs and amusement parks is the Ferris wheel. The original Ferris wheel was designed and constructed for the 1893 World’s Fair in Chicago by George Washington Gale Ferris, Jr. Since then, Ferris wheels have become the most common type of amusement rides at state fairs and other attractions. However “pleasure wheels” and “great wheels” have appeared throughout history in areas of Persia, India and Bulgaria.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Studies Don’t Support CDB Oil for Depression
Celebrating 20 Years
---
Serving Our Community!
DEAR DR. ROACH: My son is taking hemp-based CBD oil for depression. He purchased this at a health food store. His doctor prescribed pills that he was unable to tolerate due to suicidal thoughts. He is unable to go outside when taking CBD. We would like to know if it will show up in a drug test as part of a job interview. Should he be taking it? -- D. ANSWER: There are animal studies and some preliminary data suggesting that cannabidiol, a nonpsychoactive substance found in cannabis, might be effective for anxiety and depressive disorders. I hope that CBD will be proven to be a useful treatment for depression, as what we have now certainly isn’t perfect. However, there are not yet high-quality studies supporting this use. The fact that your son can’t go out while taking the CBD suggests to me that it may not be effective. While the pills he had previously cannot be used, there are many treatments available for depression that have better safety and effectiveness data than CBD. Most forensic drug testing uses THC and its metabolites, so if what your son is taking is truly CBD, then it should not be identified during testing as THC. There is a chance that the “CBD oil” he purchased has THC in it: In one study, 57% of CBD oils sold were found to have measurable THC, which would show up on a drug test. Unfortunately, 25% of the oils contained no CBD at all. I remain convinced that these drugs, THC and CBD, need to be properly studied, and when found to be useful, tested for purity and content in the same way as pharmaceuticals.

Mosquitoes may be the biggest nuisance, but biting flies and wasps also make formidable foes. Use insect repellent to keep the bugs away. Wear long pants and check for ticks after hiking.

TEETHING IS TOUGH Even the sweetest, most cheerful babies are going to become irritable, crying infants when they start the teething process because they are in pain and they don’t know why. It can be equally frustrating for parents when they are unable to soothe their screaming tots, but there are some time-tested and dentist approved things you can do to help teething babies. Cold is the key. Try frozen teething rings and pacifiers. If you feel these may be too hard, try a clean, cold wash cloth or compress. If the pain is persistent, use the recommended dose of baby acetaminophen (Tylenol). Once those teeth start popping up, be sure to schedule baby’s first dental appointment.

Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass under the trees on a summer’s day, listening to the murmur of water, or watching the clouds float across the blue sky, is by no means waste of time. ~John Lubbock, “Recreation,” The Use of Life, 1894

~ Chinese adage
There is no one who hasn’t experienced misfortune… illness, the loss of a loved one, businness reverses… yet we see some people who have overcome their sorrows and others whose sorrows have overcome them. There is no way to shield ourselves from unhappiness and disappointments, life is full of them. We must try to develop the ability to accept them with a sense of proportion. So, let us not pray for uninterrupted good fortune, but rather ask for the strength to meet whatever the day brings. Some people are unaware that complete funeral arrangements, including financing, can be made well in advance of need. Our plan provides peace of mind and will spare loved ones the task of making painful decisions under stress. Ask us for details.

S E V RA Sending our thanks The Teresa House Board of Directors, Staff and Volunteers would like to send many thanks to all of our 2021 United Way and SEFA donors. We are constantly amazed by the generosity of our community! Your donations are used in the day-to-day operations of caring for the terminally ill and their families. It is only through your generosity that the ministry of Teresa House can continue. Special thanks to the many donors who contribute every year. We are blessed to live in such a caring community. A friend during the storm I would like to thank Amy Catto for all her support when I was going through a tough time with my husband. I met her when I was going for a walk in the park. She noticed I was sad and asked me what was wrong. I told her about my situation, and she comforted me. She and I met every day after that, and we drank coffee and chatted. I am not having problems with my husband anymore! She gave me more support than a marriage counselor would, and she did it for nothing! I hope to help you and your family in the future, Amy! Brockport Labs are the best! On Tuesday, August 3rd, I went to the lab to get blood drawn and another test as well. What a job to have, but at Brockport lab the phlebotomists always do an excellent job. I have bad veins, as well as being “chicken little” when it comes to getting blood drawn, so they have to be extra attentive so that I don’t turn green. Yes, I was told one time (another lab) that I actually turned green when they had difficulty finding a good vein. So, a shout out to Cassandra Taylor who had to deal with me and my bad veins! Not only was she pleasant and made me feel comfortable, but she knew what she was doing. It was painless and quick. I didn’t even bruise, which is a telltale sign when someone doesn’t do their job correctly. Cassandra, I look forward to seeing you next time around, which will be about 3 months from now! Thank you for doing a job well done!
Fragrance chemicals Not many know this but manufacturers are not required to list their fragrance ingredients on product labels. Often only one word, “fragrance” is used on the label and can hide a cocktail of more than 100 toxic ingredients. This is because fragrances are considered to be “trade secrets.” The fragrance industry regulates itself, so that safety testing does not have to be confirmed by regulators before products are sold to consumers. Fragrance also contains phthalates, which are toxic. Fragrance is classified as allergens, hormone disruptors, asthma triggers, neurotoxins, and carcinogens. These chemicals can pass from your skin (from clothes) into your blood. You also breath them in. Many products sold are scent boosters which is a boost containing many of these toxins. It’s not real scent; it’s all chemicals. Please be careful to your health. Fragrances are in almost every product we use. Speaking truth I want to agree with the person who vented last week about the senior apartments in a local town. I have had bugs in my apartment for a few years now. My carpet is disgusting. I’m embarrassed when I have company come visit. If someone dies or moves, they might paint or put down another cheap carpet. There are a couple of buildings that have had no fire alarms for a month now. The owner has everyone over a barrel. They know we are senior and are on a fixed incomes, and now we got a notice that our rent is going up at least 35.00 starting next month and 3% every year after. But never has anything been said about routine maintenance and upkeep. [Local town] needs more senior apartments that are modestly priced. If anyone is in agreement, please let your voice be heard! Stuck in intersection The person complaining about the rude, impatient driver is a rude, inconsiderate driver. A driver is required to ensure they can make it through an intersection before entering. The person who got stuck is in the wrong. They should wait behind the stop line until the intersection clears before going through. If the light changes while they are waiting, they cannot just go through because they waited. The timing of the lights ensures that too many vehicles can’t go through an intersection so that the flow of traffic is as smooth as possible. People trying to beat the light to avoid being forced to wait another light cycle cause delays for everyone. So, stuck in the middle of the intersection is the rude inconsiderate driver here.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Save Money With Phone Plans, Price Matching With the price of everything going up, we need to save our dollars every place we can. Here are two ideas: PHONE PLANS -- If you want to save money on your cellphone plan or the cost of a new phone, there are a dozen or so providers that offer reduced-rate plans for seniors. Some offer a new phone, some will let you use your existing phone and many will let you keep your current phone number. Most offer unlimited talk and text, but prices will vary based on download speeds and data caps. Most also don’t require a contract, but if part of the deal is to buy a new phone from them, you might run into a penalty if you cancel before the phone is paid for. Call around to the phone service providers in your area and ask about senior plans. Be sure to look at their websites to check out the phones. You might need larger buttons or other special features. Better yet, if they have a store near you, go look at the phones in person. Don’t let yourself be talked into a long contract that you don’t want. PRICE MATCHING -- This is a good way to get deals on things you want if you hunt for bargains. Some stores make it their policy to match lower prices found elsewhere. You’ll need to have proof, however, meaning they’ll need to see the current price on the competitor’s website. Your best bet is to call and ask whether they’ll look online right from their store, or if it’s enough for you to print out the competitor’s online ad. It’s mostly the bigger chains that have these policies, but even a local store might be willing to price match just to get your business. Remember to ask for your senior discount everywhere you go! Baby Boomers, make up the largest generation of Americans born in United States history. DEAR PAW'S CORNER: I use dog treats to train my 18-month-old puppy, "Jif." At the dog park, an owner said that using treats is bad and that Jif will eventually get fat. That's hard to believe, as he is really energetic. He only responds when he knows there is a treat after each command. What do you say? -- Lee in Alexandria, Virginia DEAR LEE: Ah, to treat or not to treat! That's a big issue for many pet owners. Ultimately, you are in charge of Jif 's training and health. Unsolicited advice from other dog owners is only a little helpful, at best. I've interviewed and observed champion breeders and trainers, and one thing I've noted over the years is that some dogs get a treat at every turn, for seemingly every move they make. Other dogs do fine with a treat at the end of their routine. And backstage, when show dogs are being groomed, primped and prepped? They're getting treat after treat. These are champion dogs in top shape. Things to note with using treats: * Treats help build a positive association with specific commands or actions. * The pros use treats that are as healthy as possible: no byproducts, no preservatives. They're often homemade. * Treats are cut into very small pieces. They can be given more frequently without adding too many calories. * Dog treats don't replace meals. Make sure your puppy is fed on time each day with the recommended amount of food for his age and weight. It's possible to replace some of Jif 's treats with other positive associations. Praise, attention, a favorite toy -- things that bring him joy. Build that anticipation of reward in different ways. Check out a few training books, or work with a dog trainer on new ways to reward Jif. Send your tips, comments or questions to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * Eating more candy in one sitting causes fewer cavities than spacing it out through the day.
WAYS TO IMPROVE YOUR MOBILE PHONE ETIQUETTE Keep private conversations private. When the phone rings while you are in public and you don’t want to allow the call to go to voicemail, answer the call and immediately and politely explain that you are in public. This indicates to the person on the other end of the line that you do not want to broadcast potentially sensitive information to strangers, while also showing those around you that you respect them enough to reserve such conservations for private settings.

REAL ESTATE SECTION
ACCLIMATING TO A NEW NEIGHBORHOOD For a number of people, this may be the year they relocate to a new home or apartment. The moving rate in the United States has remained steady since 2008, with roughly 12 percent of the population relocating each year according to reports from the U.S. Census Bureau. Movement to the suburbs continues to be high, and renters tend to move more frequently than others. People who move cite a new job or a job transfer as one of the primary motivators to relocate. Acclimating to a new home and neighborhood after a move can be challenging. Even after boxes have been unpacked and items put away, some people still feel unsettled. It could be because one of the most important parts of being in a new house is feeling at home. That involves meeting neighbors, having friends over for dinner and knowing all of the local haunts that help solidify a homeowner as a true member of his or her new neighborhood. It can take time to establish feeings of belonging.
