6 FACTS ABOUT WATERMELONS Watermelons provide cooling, juicy refreshment during the warm days of summer. But while they’re most associated with summer, watermelons can typically be found in grocery stores yearround. Watermelons are members of the cucurbitaceae family, which includes other gourds, such as pumpkin, squash and cucumber. Watermelons can be considered a fruit or a vegetable. In some areas of the world, watermelons are considered a fruit used primarily in snacks and desserts. In Russia, watermelon rind is pickled, while some Asian countries stir-fry or stew watermelons. To quench one’s curiosity about watermelons, the following are six facts about this beloved food, courtesy of The Watermelon Board. 1. Washing watermelons before cutting into them will help prevent the transfer of any dirt or bacteria into the fleshy center. 2. An average 15- to 20-pound watermelon offers 90 6-ounce servings. 3. Watermelons grow in warm climates and are harvested from Florida to Guatemala. Residents of the United States who want to enjoy domestically grown watermelons should look for them in June, July and August. 4. Seedless watermelons contain small, white “seeds.” These are actually seed coats that didn’t fully form. Crossing watermelons that are a diploid plant (having two sets of chromosomes) with a tetraploid plant (having four sets of chromosomes) will form a fruit with a triploid seed three sets of chromosomes). It’s the triploid that produces seedless watermelons. 5. Whole watermelons do not necessarily need to be refrigerated. But once cut, any remaining pieces should be refrigerated. 6. Watermelons are 92 percent water, and they’re the perfect carrying case for beverages. Early explorers even used watermelons as canteens. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

As summer vacation winds down, thoughts turn from jaunts to the beach to readying for a new school year. To-do lists include many of the typical tasks that precede going back to the classroom, including shopping for new clothes, purchasing school supplies and finishing summer reading assignments.

Walter A. “Walt” Lindemuth July 24, 2020

Walter A. “Walt” Lindemuth, 97, of DeLand/ Orange City, Florida and Scottsville, NY passed away peacefully at home on Friday, July 24, 2020.

The family of Beatrice Warren wishes to thank all who sent cards and donations in memory of our Mom. Many sincere thanks to all who cared for our Mother at LeRoy Village Green, to Rev. Colleen O’Connor at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Stafford for her compassion and also for capturing Mom so well. Also, thank you to H.E. Turner Funeral Home.

Walt was born in Superior, Wisconsin on July 15, 1923, the son of Ellis and Winnifred (Thayer) Lindemuth. Walt grew up in Superior and graduated from high school in 1940 at the age of 16, the youngest in his class. Following graduation from high school, Walt proudly served in WWII in the Eighth Air Force in the 490th Bomb Group. After traveling and training in several military locations across the United States, in Utah, Idaho, Florida, Texas and Colorado, Walt, along with the 490th Bomb Group was stationed in Eye, England. After VE day, the 490th Bomb Group was eventually sent home to the United States in July 1945.

In appreciation, Jim, Bonnie & family Jerry, Marcia & family

Chrysanthemums Also known as mums,? chrysanthemums are frequently included in arrangements of flowers for funeral services. Particularly in some European countries, Korea, and Japan, the white chrysanthemum is symbolic of death, lamentation, and grief; therefore, its use is generally reserved for funeral services. In the United States, white chrysanthemums are often understood to symbolize truth. Life is really simple, but w e insist on making it complicated. - Confucius

Post War, Walt used his knowledge of working instruments and worked in the tool and die industry at Taylor Instruments in Rochester, NY. He soon met his wife Betty and they were married on June 5, 1948. Walt and Betty eventually ended up in Scottsville, NY, where they lived for 28 years and raised their two daughters. In Scottsville, Walt was an active community member. He was a life member of the Masonic Lodge, Oatka Lodge #759 F. & A.M., where he was a past Grand Master. In 2014, Walt traveled from Florida to attend a ceremony with his family, at the Oatka Lodge in Scottsville, to honor his 60th year in the Masons. Walt was also a member of The Scottsville Rotary Club, a member of the Union Presbyterian Church, and served on the Wheatland-Chili School Board. Retirement brought Walt and Betty to Orange City, Florida in 1986. There, Walt was again an active member of the community. Walt was best known in their retirement community for his lawn sprinkler work but was also active in their retirement community get togethers at the Club House, was a member of the Masonic Lodge #383 in Deltona and a member of the First Congregational Church of Orange City. Walt’s church family was an especially important part of his life. Walt and Betty moved to Woodland Towers in DeLand, Florida in August 2017.

“There is the noble art of leaving things undone. The wisdom of life consists in the elimination of non-essentials…” ~ Lin Yutang

Perhaps the greatest thief of our time is the notion that we must attend to all the countless little petty tasks that confront us daily. We try to take them in order, complete them if possible and hope for the day when we will have a little time for more important things. What would happen if we simply left the trivial chores undone? If we eliminated the non-essentials, we might find time for more important activity. We might even have time for that long-delayed self-improvement project. It is our belief that a funeral service should be a beautiful experience to remember. It should aid the bereaved in their difficult adjustment to loss.

Jeff Deragon

Over his life, Walt was dedicated to helping and serving others but he also enjoyed ballroom and square dancing, traveling with Betty, most particularly to annual reunions of the 490th Bomb Group, which took them to various locations all across the United States. In retirement, Walt was an avid reader, loved solving word puzzles, always looked forward to his weekly golf game with his “buddies,” and dining out with friends. Walt loved family visits and couldn’t wait to play card games every day of each visit. Surviving are his wife Betty of 72 years of DeLand, Florida; two daughters, Donna (Pat) Gilligan of Encinitas, CA and Janice Putnam of Naples, NY. Walt is also survived by cousins Forrest (Ronda) Skelton of Churchville, NY, Sue (Skelton) Huff (Rick) of Churchville, NY and Marion Bohannon of Cookeville, TN. Walt was preceded in death by his parents and infant brother Harold. The family would like to thank Woodland Towers and Vitas Hospice Care for the exceptional care that has been provided, most notably the Nursing Department at Woodland Towers for their selflessness and compassion at the end of Walt’s life. Unfortunately, no service can be planned at this time. To share a memory or a condolence, please visit: www.dignitymemorial.com/obituaries/orange-city-fl/walter-lindemuth-9277239 If donations are considered, Walt would be pleased to have them made to a Rotary Club of your choice, a Masonic Lodge of your choice, The Humane Society or First Congregational Church of Orange City.

My name is Theo. I am an about 13 years young orange tabby and have lived with my mom and dad since 2010. I am quite a conversationalist and love being with people, especially curled up on their laps. I am a good traveler, going with my snowbird parents south every winter. I sleep all day in my cat carrier and explore the hotel room all night. Then, I sleep again the next day until we arrive at our winter home. My favorite ritual, no matter where I am, is being brushed. Then you can hear me purr in the next county.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Help! I’m in over my head. I wanted a dog just like a cute, white, fluffy one that I saw on YouTube, so I bought one online called a “Samoyed” and picked it up at the airport. “Mikey” is cute, white and fluffy, but he’s also hyperactive and loud! He barks all the time. He wants to run outside my apartment. He won’t hold still for pictures. He chews everything, he smells terrible and he poops everywhere. I did not pay for this! How can I get my money back? -- Bilked in Buffal DEAR BILKED: You didn’t get cheated; you got a dog. That’s exactly how dogs behave! They are energetic, communicative, living beings. They love to chew things. Their breath smells kind of funny, and their fur can smell funky after a run outside. They need exercise, training, food and love. Samoyeds like Mikey are especially energetic, because they were originally bred for hunting and as guard dogs. You’ll need to keep him on a leash outside, because he will chase smaller mammals, especially cats and rabbits. He’ll get bigger, too; Samoyeds are medium-large to large dogs. Don’t try to return Mikey or get your money back (if that’s even possible since you bought him online). The trauma you’ll cause him may be unrecoverable. Instead, if you have friends with well-behaved dogs, talk to them and get advice. Pick up a book on caring for Samoyeds. And schedule some sessions with a dog trainer. You chose Mikey to be your family member. He depends on you. He’ll do his best to make you happy, but you need to care for him and show him how to be a good dog. Send your comments and tips to ask@pawscorner.com.

Every day is a new beginning. Take a deep breath, smile & start again.

THANK YOU, WALGREENS CASHIER! Went to Walgreens on Tuesday, July 28th, and Alex, the cashier was not only efficient, but kind, considerate, and patient with me. I had multiple orders, so I went to the check out three separate times. Each and every time, he did not rush me through my orders but was very helpful. As a customer, I really appreciate when a cashier is kind and considerate. Alex was accommodating to my needs, and he did so in a friendly manner. That means a lot to the customers.

SPYING In response to the person who complained about 11 cars parked in their neighbor’s driveway, I’d like to emphasize a few words you used in your rant. You said cars were parked in “his” driveway. Unmasked people were walking into “his” home. Your neighbor makes the rules on his property and in his home. Why are you spying on your neighbor anyway? Ever go to a store that you like to shop at, only to have a slow and unfriendly cashier have to check you out? I have, and it leaves an unpleasant experience in your mind. At Walgreens, in Brockport, I have never had that negative experience. So, Alex, thank you for being so attentive to the needs of your customers. THE PITTSFORD DAIRY What a fun, welcoming atmosphere to help cool down these hot days. Happy, helpful employees and they know how to make a shake! along the shoulder of the road. She was blowing all the grass and debris into the road on both sides. As I went by, I was peppered by grass and small stones. I looked to see if my car was scratched. Luckily, it wasn’t. I know it wasn’t intentional, but if my car had been scratched or dented, I would’ve gotten a police report and have had you pay to fix any my car. If you insist on blowing the grass into the road, at least stop as cars go by.

FOREVER GRATEFUL! On Friday, July 24th I took a hard fall in front of Aldi’s in Batavia. I just want to thank so many people who came to my aid that day. May God’s blessings fall on all of you for all you did on my behalf. I am forever grateful. Thank you; thank you! LIFESPAN’S LONG-TERM CARE OMBUDSMAN PROGRAM Lifespan’s Long-term Care Ombudsman program extends a heartfelt “thank you” to the 50+ volunteers who are trained to take pictures of children in a public place.

TOXIC NEIGHBORHOODS I am dismayed by all the pesticidetreated lawns. Grass lawns are the biggest mono crop in the US, covering more surface area, 40 million acres, than wheat and corn, and we douse it with pesticides year-round. Pesticides don’t magically become safe after application. Pesticide residues remain on the grass even if it’s dry. So far, we haven’t heard from the management. We feel we experienced price gouging! We won’t be going back to that place! BE NICE! Apparently, you think you own the public road you live on because it bears your last name. Please remember that your relatives were farmers who fouled up the intersecting state highway with manure, and no one in the neighborhood complained. Everyone else in the neighborhood is tolerant and understanding- except for you. It is unfortunate that you choose to be a bully and make everyone dislike you. Show us you can do better.

Rochester Accessible Adventures Promotes Inclusion of People with Disabilities in Recreation & Sports BY ANITA O’BRIEN

R

ochester Accessible Adventures, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, is responding to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic with an ambitious inclusion training movement. Rochester Accessible Adventures Promotes Inclusion of People with Disabilities in Recreation & Sports with Ambitious Online Training Movement During Covid-19. The #WeWillInclude movement connects youth ages 6+ and adults to free 3-hour online training which promotes knowledge and skills for creating inclusive recreation and sports settings. Rochester Accessible Adventures has set the goal of training 2,020 youth and adults in 2020. “In the face of the Covid-19 pandemic, it is imperative that we do not lose the momentum we have gained towards creating a community that is inclusive of youth and adults with disabilities,” said Anita O’Brien, executive director of Rochester Accessible Adventures. “We are very excited about new partnerships we are forming which will foster whole communities of Inclusion Ambassadors to promote inclusion and work with us to remove physical and social barriers which keep people with disabilities from accessing recreation and sports alongside their family members, schoolmates, peers, and work friends.” The #WeWillInclude movement has two components: a way for corporations and philanthropic giving groups to financially support the effort, and online training that is perfect for this extraordinary time when people are staying close to home and learning to rely on their screens for unique learning opportunities for themselves and their families. A number of groups that typically spend time in person during the summer are utilizing the online training for their staff and participants who continue to meet virtually. “Girl Scouts of Western New York values diversity, equity, and inclusion and is proud to join in the #WeWillInclude movement as a way to expand efforts to build a community of young leaders who promote inclusion,”said Alison Wilcox, CEO of Girl Scouts of Western New York. “We look forward to exploring ways our troop leaders, camp counselors, and girls can continue to build these principles of inclusion throughout all of our programs across Western New York as we conduct Summer Camp At Home and future Girl Scout programs.” A video about the ways to be involved in the movement is circulating on social media and outreach networks that have extended across the country, appealing to summer camp programs, schools, social and leadership groups. HOW TO SUPPORT BUSINESSES DURING MANDATORY RESTRICTIONS Recognize that more than food is available for takeout. In response to the COVID-19 outbreak, Governor Andrew Cuomo of New York announced relaxations on laws governing what can and cannot be obtained via takeout, allowing takeout on goods that were previously restricted in regard to takeout. For example, Cuomo announced that the New York State Liquor Authority intended to temporarily relax regulations regarding the takeout and delivery of alcohol. Utilizing such services can be a great way to support local businesses while still adhering to recommendations designed to slow the spread of COVID-19.

HOW COUPLES CAN BENEFIT FROM HIRING LOCAL WEDDING VENDORS: Individuals who take great strides to conserve resources by reducing their energy consumption and protecting the environment often find that shopping local is beneficial. Local vendors are more likely to source their materials from other local businesses, reducing their carbon footprints along the way. For example, local caterers may rely on local farmers for their foods, affording couples the chance to host eco-friendly or even farm-to-table weddings.

Our magnolia tree is dropping some kind of black residue on the ground. Wondering if it has a fungus problem? What should be done to eliminate it? - Pam M. Yes, your Magnolia tree does have a problem but it is not a fungus. Rather, the problem is an insect called “Magnolia Scale.” This is an insect that starts out as a small, six-legged crawler in early spring which finds a tender spot on a branch, attaches itself and begins feeding on the sweet sap of the Magnolia tree. As it feeds, it grows a protective shell or covering which looks like a scale and turns whitish. The scale insects

excrete excess sap called “Honey Dew” which drops down on lower leaves and on anything below the tree. A fungus called “Sooty Mold” grows on the coating of honey dew and turns black. While the black residue is sticky and unsightly, it is usually not harmful. The scale infestation, however, can weaken the tree and cause limbs to die back.

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles

Getting Up Off the Floor With aging, we lose muscle. With all the staying home we're doing now, we're losing more muscle. We have to fight against that. One serious result of losing muscle at our age is the simple task of getting up off the floor. It can happen to anybody our age: You look for something at the back of the bottom shelf of the refrigerator, and suddenly there you are, sitting on the kitchen floor, unable to get up. Even if you can reach the phone to call for help, think about what happens next. The EMT crew will show up, but they won't come rushing in. Not nowadays. Now they want to determine whether or not you're likely to have the COVID virus. If there's any risk at all, they're likely to suit up with all their biohazard gear before they even come in the house. The best way to avoid all that drama is to not lose those muscles and to know a few techniques for getting up again. Put these search words into YouTube or even your browser: "seniors get off floor muscles." Some specific YouTube channels you can search through for helpful exercises and techniques are "Eldergym Fitness for Seniors," "Ernie Schramayr" and "Bob & Brad." (These last two guys are physical therapists with a great sense of humor. In fact, click Videos and look through all their offerings.) When you find something you like, bookmark it. Then, when you have the muscles and the technique, test it once a week. Get down on the floor, get up. Even if you're certain you'd have no problems, test it anyway. With aging you never know.

This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

Most people think that aging is irreversible and we know that there are mechanisms even in the human machinery that allow for the reversal of aging, through correction of diet, through anti-oxidants, through removal of toxins from the body, through exercise, through yoga and breathing techniques, and through meditation. ~ Deepak Chopra

Use fans. Consumer Reports tested the efficacy of oscillating pedestal fans to keep mosquitoes from invading decks and patios and found that such fans cut mosquito landings by 45 to 65 percent for those sitting closest to the fans. When hosting backyard barbecues, homeowners can set up several such fans on their decks and patios to keep mosquitoes at bay.

Removing Gallbladder Didn’t End Gallstones ---

Lakeville 3513 Thomas Dr., Suite 2 Henrietta 20 Finn Road, Suite C

DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband had his gallbladder removed many years ago. In the past few years, he has had six ERCPs to remove gallstones from his bile duct, as he is still making them. He has been told to drink lots of water but that there is no preventive remedy. Do you have any suggestions for how to prevent these gallstones from forming? -- B.A.P. ANSWER: Ordinarily, removing the gallbladder stops new gallstones from forming. Having a gallstone left after surgery is not uncommon, but it is very uncommon for people to make multiple new stones years after surgery. One possibility is a diverticulum of the common bile duct. The common bile duct drains bile from the liver and gallbladder into the small intestine; it drains pancreatic fluid, too. A diverticulum is a blind pouch. It’s possible for a stone to form there, so you should find out if he has one. They should have seen it on one of the ERCPs (a special endoscopy that looks at the bile and pancreatic ducts). If present, a diverticulum can be removed surgically. I asked my colleague at Weill Cornell, Dr. Arun Jesudian, for his expertise, and he said he has seen multiple stones in the liver due to parasitic infections, often in Asian patients. That may require surgical treatment. He also discussed doing a sphincterotomy, which is a procedure to open the end of the common bile duct, to let stones pass through easily. Your husband may benefit from expanding it. Finally, there is a medication to reduce gallstones, ursodiol (Actigall), which Dr. Jesudian feels had no real downsides and might well help. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m a female, 53, who suffers from and is being treated for IBS. I have a history of colon cancer in my family. My family members and I go through regular screenings and so far, we’ve been clean. Once in a while, I wake up feeling a sharp, stabbing pain in my rectal area that lasts no more than 20-30 minutes before going away. These pains occur no more than once a month, sometimes every few months, but the pain often happens while I’m asleep and wakes me up. Luckily, there have been no bloody or black stools or urine following this, much to my relief. I’ve talked to my gastroenterologist about it, and he’s as clueless as I am. I do exercise and watch what I eat. Could it be gas? At least the pain is short-lived, so it doesn’t interfere with my daily activities or routine. -- A. ANSWER: Irritable bowel syndrome is a common problem, found more frequently in women, that ranges from annoying to lifechanging. Although it does not predispose to cancer or reduce life expectancy, IBS can have dramatic effects on a person’s social and work lives. The hallmarks of IBS are bowel changes (diarrhea, constipation or sometimes both, alternating) and abdominal discomfort. The discomfort is usually described as cramping, but it is not unheard of to be described as sharp or stabbing. I believe a colonoscopy is appropriate to be sure IBS is not actually a different problem, such as inflammatory bowel disease. Black or bloody stools would be concerning for IBD not IBS. Your symptoms are not typical for colon cancer, which often has no symptoms until it is quite advanced, making regular screening so important. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. www.salmonorthodontics.com HOW TO ENCOURAGE KIDS TO TAKE CARE OF THEIR TEETH Parents of young children know that getting kids to brush their teeth can sometimes feel like pulling teeth. Kids have a long history of disliking dental care, which can frustrate parents who know the importance and long-lasting benefits of proper dental hygiene. While many youngsters may never excitedly run to the bathroom to brush their teeth, parents can try various approaches to get kids to embrace proper dental care. Start early. Parents should not hesitate to begin cleaning kids’ teeth once the first tooth appears. The earlier dental care is part of a child’s routine, the more likely he or she is to accept it as part of everyday life. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends using a softbristled brush with a small head. Ideally, use a toothbrush designed for infants, brushing teeth once per day at bedtime. The AAPD advises taking kids to visit a pediatric dentist when the first tooth appears, or no later than the child’s first birthday. Make it a group effort. Young children love to imitate their parents’ actions and behaviors, and moms and dads can use that adoration to their advantage when trying to get kids to brush their teeth. Brush teeth together as a family, making it seem like an enjoyable twice-daily activity. Get down on kids’ level and show them how to brush. If kids are resistant, engage them in conversation while brushing so they don’t even realize they’re cleaning away. Involve kids in choosing their dental care products. While parents should be mindful of the type of toothbrush their children use, always sticking with products recommended by their child’s pediatric dentist, let youngsters choose their toothbrush and toothpaste. Kids might prefer a particular flavor of toothpaste, and a colorful toothbrush with a favorite film or television character might make kids more enthusiastic and less fussy about brushing. Compliment kids after positive dental appointments. When pediatric dentist appointments go well, compliment children and express your pride in them for taking dental hygiene as seriously as they do.

The number of people who smoke is on the decline, as a 2018 report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention noted that the percentage of adults in the United States who smoke cigarettes declined from roughly 21 percent in 2005 to 15.5 percent in 2016. That decline has no doubt helped reduce overall cancer death rates, though the figures regarding smoking-related deaths are still staggering. According to the CDC, smoking accounts for more than 480,000 deaths each year in the United States. The 2018 report from the CDC indicates that men (17.5 percent) are more likely than women (13.5 percent) to smoke cigarettes. In addition, the report notes a correlation between education and the likelihood of smoking cigarettes. While smoking was lowest among people who had graduate degrees, with only five out of every 100 such adults being smokers, smoking rates were highest (40.6 percent) among adults with graduate education degree certificates, or GEDs. While people who had no high school diploma were less likely to smoke cigarettes than GED recipients, the CDC report found that smoking rates declined the more education people received. Page 27

Simplify vacations and savor the fun Keep your itinerary flexible. Scheduling right down to the minute can remove the fun of the trip. Leave opportunities to just sit and enjoy your surroundings. Perhaps other members of the family or traveling party have their own ideas for entertainment. A rigid timeline can make the vacation seem more like a commitment rather than an opportunity to let loose and stop watching the clock.
