BETTER SOONER THAN LATER No one should ever put off necessary dental procedures due to financial concerns. A recent survey of 2,000 Americans reveals that half of those polled postponed a necessary procedure or diagnostic test because they were apprehensive of the bill. Unfortunately, this misplaced concern often backfires when the postponement leads to a worsened condition that requires emergency treatment that costs far more. As the old adage has it, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” If the hygienist or dentist spots early signs of tooth decay, it may be possible to reverse the process with fluoride treatment and anti-bacterial rinses. If not, it is less expensive to fill a small cavity than to get a crown.
Teeth are meant to last a lifetime, but you have to work at it; you have to want to keep them badly enough to do what needs to be done. And if that means protecting them by attending to the little problems before they become serious issues, then we hope you’ll turn to our full-service dental office at BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL. We’re always on your side in putting your healthiest smile forward. A visit to 6 Batavia City Centre, may be just what you need to enhance your quality of life. Call 585.343.4246 for an appointment.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Use Keto Diet Only in Short-Term ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: What is your opinion of the keto diet? I have been doing it for a few weeks now and lost a few pounds, but it goes against everything I usually eat -- high quantities of red meat, lots of full-fat foods and dairy. Since I am losing some weight and actually feel better and am sleeping better, I like the short-term results, but I cannot see this as a long-term way of life. I am concerned about all that fat going into my body and clogging my arteries. I exercise every day with Zumba, jogging, etc. -- J.P. ANSWER: The ketosis diet favors very large amounts of fat -60% to 80% of calories, with 15% to 20% of calories from protein and 5% or less from carbohydrates. The theory is to cause ketosis, a physiological condition of ketones in the blood as a result of high fat intake. It has been used since the 1920s as a treatment for seizures, but now is used for weight loss. Like every diet, it has both good and bad aspects. On the good side, it is effective at short-term weight loss. However, much of the apparent early weight loss is due to water weight, which is a universal finding on a high-fat diet. Weight gain is likely when stopping the diet. It is highly restrictive. Further, many of the foods that you can’t eat on this diet are those that have been shown to be associated with improved health, especially vegetables and most fruits. Most people will have a substantial increase in cholesterol levels (by as much as 50%). The red meat and saturated fat probably present an independent risk of heart disease and cancer (even apart from its effect on cholesterol), although this remains somewhat controversial. I do not recommend the keto diet for long-term use, at all. It may have some benefit in helping with short-term weight loss, but I think there are much healthier alternatives for most people. ***
DEAR DR. ROACH: Your column about the 58-year-old woman who felt like she had oil in her eye reminded me of having a very similar situation. I described it to my optometrist, and he also diagnosed ocular migraine. I wanted another opinion, because the only symptom I had was the oil, no headache or visual disturbances. The ophthalmologist diagnosed blepharitis, or clogged oil glands at the base of my eyelashes. She recommended placing a warm pack of rice in a sock over my eye and then washing the eye area with baby shampoo on a washcloth. I did this for a week or two, and on my visit with her to recheck the eyes, the problem was gone. -- J.P. ANSWER: Thank you for writing. Blepharitis is caused by changes in the meibomian glands, oil glands that are present in both eyelids, often associated with changes in bacteria. I usually see people with this condition noticing red eyes and a gritty sensation. However, you are quite right that it includes blurry vision, and the eye-care professional sometimes can see an oily or foamy film over the eye. The treatment the ophthalmologist recommended works for most people. Gentle lid massage may help get additional oily material out of the glands. However, antibiotics or other treatments are sometimes necessary. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Batavia’s Salvation Army to Host Back to School Backpack Bash By Amanda Dudek On Wednesday, August 21st, the Salvation Army of Batavia will celebrate Genesee County families at its Back to School Backpack Bash. For several years, the Salvation Army has reached out to Genesee County families, offering backpacks filled with supplies to each child in need. Batavia’s Salvation Army is on track to equip a record number of Genesee County children for the upcoming school year. “Our goal this year is to provide over 200 children with the supplies they need to start their school year out on the right foot,” said Salvation Army Captain Rachel Moore, Corp Officer and Administrator. Moore and her husband have been administrators with the Salvation Army of Batavia since 2016. “In 2017, we supported 130 children, and in 2018, we supported 180,” she recalled. “This year, we are hoping to support more than 200 children.” Salvation Army volunteers go above and beyond, tailoring the supplies to each student. “We have small cards with some basic information about each child,” said Moore. “Things like the child’s name, boy or girl, age and grade as well as school. Using school supply lists from each school, our Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary fills each backpack with the specific supplies each child needs.” Moore adds that Wal-Mart and Target, among others, also have supply lists for most area schools available on their websites. Providing so many filled backpacks is no small undertaking. “Many local companies and organizations sponsor backpacks with us, including Chapin, Graham and The Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary,” Moore explained. “Chapin International, Inc., for example, an industrial equipment supplier in Batavia, donated funds specifically for backpacks and school supplies.” Community members spontaneously give donations, too, often walking right in off the street with cash and school supply donations in hand. “This year, we also worked with Wal-Mart and its national program, “Stuff the Bus,” said Moore, adding that Wal-Mart has a national agreement with the Salvation Army. “They allowed us to stand next to the Grocery Entrance at their Batavia store from 10am until 6pm. We collected supplies and thanked the very generous people of this community.” Children will receive their backpacks at the Salvation Army’s Back to School Backpack Bash on Wednesday, August 21st. Children, their families, friends, neighbors and community members are invited to attend the bash at the Salvation Army Store on 529 E. Main Street in Batavia. “It will be a carnival atmosphere with cotton candy, face painting, games, slushies and more fun,” said Moore. “Most children pick their backpacks up at the Bash, but we do hold them until the first day of school just in case.” Moore hopes that by providing backpacks and supplies, struggling families will have one less financial stress. “These families are always very, very grateful,” shared Moore. “When you are living from paycheck to paycheck, and you are faced with this whole list of items on top of things like new shoes and new clothes,

it really starts to add up. It can be overwhelming.” Often, this financial stress results in a trickle-down effect. “If we can help remove some of that financial stress, we find it often helps to alleviate emotional stress, as well, and we are happy to be a part of that,” Moore concluded. “Kids already face so many obstacles; even interacting with other children on a day-to-day basis can be a challenge,” said Moore. “We often hear so much about bullying, and this is just one more thing we can do to get kids ready for school and set a positive tone for the rest of the year. That is really what we hope to accomplish.” Moore also encourages families and individuals to connect with additional Salvation Army programs. “We have several emergency programs such as our food pantry and emergency rental assistance,” Moore shared. The Salvation Army also has a youth development program, “Music and More,” which offers a free hot meal for kids every Friday night along with free music instruction. “At Music and More, we invest in our youth, give them a safe place to be and encourage them to grow in music and the arts,” Moore stated. “We have many instruments here, and we are looking into grant opportunities so that we can secure more instruments and more people for tutoring.” Moore added that, while the Salvation Army has a musically talented volunteer staff, they are always looking for musically skilled volunteers for this program. A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel Ways to Make the World a Better Place for Seniors (Family Features) By 2050, the senior population (adults age 65 and older) will be more than double that of the world’s youngest citizens, and the number of people living beyond age 80 is expected to triple over the next 30 years. As the aging population increases, some 11.3 million seniors are living alone, according to the Institute on Aging. In addition, women are twice as likely as older men to live by themselves. Without proper support, seniors may face a wide range of issues including limited mobility, chronic conditions, improper nutrition and feelings of loneliness. For example, older adults can have problems chewing or may take medications which interfere with their appetites. However, research shows lack of companionship may be the biggest challenge. In fact, an AARP survey found 1 in 5 adults over the age of 40 were “socially disconnected,” which can impact health. People who reportedly experienced loneliness and isolation had lower mental well-being scores, and those who were dissatisfied with their level of social engagement were more likely to report a decline in cognitive function, as well. While anyone can benefit from a kind gesture, seniors are some of the most in-need members in many communities. There is likely a wide range of opportunities to enhance the lives of seniors in your area. Numerous programs and agencies exist to help you determine the best way to make a difference.
On Aug. 9, 1974, Richard Nixon officially resigns as president of the United States, departing in a helicopter from the White House lawn. Minutes later, Vice President Gerald Ford was sworn in. Ford spoke in a television address, declaring, "My fellow Americans, our long national nightmare is over." On Aug. 10, 1937, the electric guitar is recognized by the United States Patent Office with the award of Patent No. 2,089.171 for the Rickenbacker Frying Pan. The guitar used a heavy electromagnet that surrounded the base of the steel strings like a bracelet. On Aug. 11, 1806, explorer Meriwether Lewis is shot in the hip, probably by one of his own men. Private Cruzatte, who was blind in one eye and nearsighted in the other, insisted he had not shot his captain. Lewis, however, had the offending bullet: A .54 caliber slug from a modern U.S. Army rifle, identical to the one carried by Cruzatte.
One example is Ready to Care, an initiative from Home Instead Senior Care that challenges people to complete weekly care missions. Each activity guides members through various ways to give to senior-related causes, learn about the aging crisis and issues impacting seniors, and serve seniors through small actions of kindness. Most care missions are simple acts, such as opening a door, learning about Alzheimer’s or helping with a chore. Each week, a new mission is delivered to participants’ phones via text message. Small gestures, like these simple acts of kindness, can go a long way toward improving a senior’s day. Physical assistance: Most seniors are eager to retain their independence, but everyday tasks can pose fall risks or require exposure to harsh weather conditions that can be dangerous to older adults. • Offer to bring in the daily newspaper or mail. • Mow their lawn or offer to help with other yardwork. • Lend a hand in caring for pets, such as taking a dog for a walk or helping clean up waste from the yard. • Offer moral support and a sense of physical safety by volunteering to join them on a walk. Social support: Loneliness is common among seniors, especially those who live alone. Show seniors in your area they have a meaningful place in the community and options for companionship. • Offer a friendly wave and say hello when you see them out. • Invite them to dinner, either at your home or at a restaurant. • Have your children or kids you know in the area draw pictures or write letters. • Make a date for an afternoon or evening of entertainment, such as cards, a movie or board games. Practical solutions: For various reasons, some seniors may be unable to complete everyday tasks. Offer a helping hand in their daily routines when possible. • Lend your time to take them to run errands. • Deliver baked goods or a home-cooked meal to improve access to nourishing foods. • Help arrange for professional assistance and services, such as an audit to ensure homes are safe GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

SENIORS AND EXERCISE: TIPS TO AVOID INJURIES, GET HEALTHY Start slowly. Seniors who have not been physically active for some time should take a gradual approach to exercise. Instead of heading right for the treadmill, exercise bike or elliptical machine, start walking every day. When it rains, find a treadmill you can walk on. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons recommends seniors begin by determining how many steps they can take in a day and then gradually working toward 10,000 to 15,000 steps per day. Utilize step counting apps on your smartphone to track your progress. Apply the same slow approach to strength training exercises, lifting only very light weights at first before gradually increasing weight as your body acclimates to the exercises.

Gardeners I am an avid wild life lover. I feed all the birds and critters. Recently, a hawk has discovered my Bird feeders and stalks it. It has killed numerous birds around my feeders. I have tried plastic owls, pinwheels, next is a scarecrow. I have numerous trees which is a perfect cover for it to swoop in & attack the birds. I have even moved my feeders near and underneath a tree to protect them. But this hawk is a great stalker! Please help! – Anna
from Cornell Cooperative Extension, Livingston County vary for this length of time needed so is not absolute. Moving the feeder under a tree makes it more attractive to the hawk since it will watch to see where the birds go. The trees will just shelter the hawk from other birds such as crows which might attack it. Leaving feeders in the open is a better location since it allows the small birds a chance to see and escape the hawk. Obviously at this point, that is not an effective solution.
How do you help flowers withstand heat waves?
• Water at the appropriate times of day. The National Gardening Association notes that it’s best to water in the early morning and evening because less water will be lost to The best thing is to take down the feeders evaporation during these times of day than for a month to give the hawk incentive to during the afternoon, when temperatures look elsewhere for food. Recommendations tend to be at their hottest.
• Choose the right watering method. It’s not just when but also how you water that can affect flowers during summer heat waves. Aboveground sprinklers might be great for lawns, but the NGA notes that such sprinklers can encourage the spread of disease on certain plants, including roses. Many gardening professionals recommend soaker hoses when watering flowers because they promote deep watering that can help the plants withstand the summer heat. If you must use an overheard watering system, set the timer so plants are watered in
early in the morning or evening. • Routinely check the soil moisture. Soil moisture can help gardeners determine if their flowers have enough water to withstand the heat. The NGA advises gardeners to dig a 12-inch deep wedge of soil from their gardens to determine its moisture levels. If the top six inches of the soil is dry, water. If that area is still wet or moist, the plants have enough moisture to withstand the heat. Check these moisture levels more frequently during heat waves than other times of year. - Answer from Metro Creative

“Absence extinguishes small passions and increases grest ones, as the wind will blow out a candle and blow in a fire…” ~ La Rochefoucauld
This observation by the great French writer and moralist of the early 17th century, explains the apparent contradiction of the two old adages…”Out of sight, out of mind” and “Absence makes the heart grow fonder.” If an attraction is but a passing fancy, it may very well be eliminated by a period of separation. But, if two people enjoy a great mutual love, an absence…even of prolonged duration…will only increase their devotion to one another. Thoughtful people may wish to make all arrangements for their own funeral services, well in advance of need. Financial aspects can also be pre-arranged. Out staff will discuss this with you, in your home if you prefer. Phone us, no obligation.

MAINTAIN SPARKLING CLEAR POOL WATER Nearly every pool owner has had to deal with algae at some point in his or her life. One of the best ways to minimize algae spores in the pool besides high-sanitation levels is through routine brushing and vacuuming. According to Leslie’s Pool Supplies, pool walls, floors and steps are the most common places to find algae in a pool. If left untreated, algae can burrow their roots inside the cracks on these surfaces, making them very difficult to remove. That’s why weekly (or more frequent) brushing and vacuuming can help keep surfaces clean and algae-free. Vacuuming also helps remove debris that has fallen into the water and sunk, which can decompose and contribute to water cloudiness.

ONLINE POLL: With recent shootings killing 22 in El Paso, Texas and 9 in Dayton, Ohio, many are suggesting changes to firearm legislation. Is this the answer? • Yes, more laws would reduce access to firearms. • Yes, fewer laws would arm more civilians, deterring violence. • No, firearm legislation is not the solution.
CONSERVE WATER WHEN TEMPERATURES RISE Spring and summer are synonymous with increased hours of sunlight, warm temperatures and, oftentimes, an increased reliance on water to feed recreational pursuits and lawn and garden needs. The Water Information Program states that 3.9 trillion gallons of water are consumed in the United States each month and the average person uses 176 gallons of water per day. Water conservation may be essential when the risk for weather-related drought looms. Practicing year-round conservation efforts can help ensure smart usage of local watersheds, lakes and reservoirs and help maintain these water sources for years to come. It also helps the average person reduce his or her carbon footprint while saving people a little money along the way.
Poll Ends 08-13-19
Results from 08-06-19 For the first time in 16 years, the United States Federal Government plans to enforce the death penalty with the scheduled executions of five death row inmates. Should the federal government be permitted to use capital punishment?

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) A chaotic atmosphere taxes the patience of the Aries Lamb, who prefers to deal with a more orderly environment. Best advice: Stay out of the situation until things settle. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Tension runs high in both personal and workplace relationships. This can make it difficult to get your message across. Best to wait until you have a more receptive audience. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) This is a good time to take a break from your busy schedule to plan for some well-deserved socializing. You could get news about an important personal matter by the week’s end. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) An offer of help could come just when you seem to need it. But be careful about saying yes to anything that might have conditions attached that could cause problems down the line. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Sometimes a workplace colleague can’t be charmed into supporting the Lion’s position. That’s when it’s time to shift tactics and overwhelm the doubter with the facts. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) You continue to earn respect for your efforts to help someone close to you stand up to a bully. But be careful that in pushing this matter you don’t start to do some bullying yourself. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Don’t ask others if they think you’re up to a new responsibility. Having faith in your own abilities is the key to dealing with a challenge. P.S.: That “private” matter needs your attention. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) This is a good time to use that Scorpian creativity to come up with something special that will help get your derailed career plans back on track and headed in the right direction. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) While change is favored, it could be a good idea to carefully weigh the possible fallout as well as the benefits of any moves before you make them. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) The Goat continues to create a stir by following his or her own path. Just be sure you keep your focus straight and avoid any distractions that could cause you to make a misstep. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A colleague’s demands seem out of line. But before reacting one way or another, talk things out and see how you might resolve the problem and avoid future misunderstandings. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A personal matter appears to be making more demands on your time than you feel you’re ready to give. See if some compromise can be reached before things get too dicey. BORN THIS WEEK: You’re able to communicate feelings better than most people. Have you considered a career in the pulpit or in politics?

Tipping isn’t even mandatory. I am a hairdresser, and I always tell people to do what they can. People who are on fixed incomes or don’t make a lot occasionally treat themselves. There was time a lady could only afford to give me $2, and I told her, “It’s fine; you do what you can. It’s the thought that counts,” and I depend on tips, too. People are doing the best they can in this world and shouldn’t be shamed for it. If someone is at least leaving a tip, it’s better than nothing.

During a recent visit to the ER, two of the nurses were not kind and not friendly. It is such a shame that they would act in such a manner, particularly in the profession they have chosen. Cold would be a good word to use in describing them. I’ve had vet technicians who were kinder to my dog! I am seeing a lot more parking spaces designated for those who are too lazy to do their own shopping. The first 6+ parking spots are taken. Handicap, I understand. even need to leave your car or house! Walking and fresh air are good for you. It’s a weeknight at almost 10pm. Normally, the street is peacefully quiet at this time. People are in bed because they have to work in the morning, and you’re mowing your lawn? I live houses away from you, and I could hear it. Imagine the poor people right next to you! Have some respect. I’ve seen your car there during the day, at all hours, when you could be mowing, and regardless, common sense is free.
