HOW TO SAFELY NAVIGATE WET ROADS
Keeping a car waxed and sealed can help maintain a durable exterior finish. This includes not only the paint, but the rubber and vinyl parts of the car’s exterior.
Winter is a good time to switch to a heavy-duty synthetic wax that can shield against water and road salts. High-quality sealants can be used on bumpers, trim and rubber door seals as added protection. Speak with an automotive retailer or even the car dealership if you are unsure which products will make your car’s parts most durable for winter weather.
DID YOU KNOW?
Do not stop washing your car just because the weather is cold. Slushy, wet roads and snow-melting salts can speed up the formation of rust or other decay on the undercarriage of the vehicle. These materials will need to be periodically cleaned off. Flush the underside of the vehicle whenever possible, taking advantage of any dry, slightly warmer days.
Fall is a great time of year to hit the open road, as fall foliage is colorful and provides a wonderful backdrop for weekend getaways, while the mild temperatures of fall make this an ideal time to enjoy the great Thoughoutdoors.autumn is often a mild time of year with regard to weather, fall foliage enthusiasts can still encounter adverse conditions on road trips. According to the automotive group AAA, wet pavement contributes to nearly 1.2 million traffic accidents each year. The size of the area you want to level will determine the tools you need. For a small area, you can use a shovel to move soil from the higher to lower area, then smooth it out with a garden rake. Larger areas can require use of earthmoving equipment sized to the scale of your project. A rototiller may be a good tool to start with at any size. You should also consider

* Eating Kentucky Fried Chicken on Dec. 25 is such a popular tradition in Japan that the chain asks customers to place their orders at least two months in advance. The custom started in 1974 when it was introduced to Japan for visitors who were looking for a dinner that resembled a traditional holiday meal.
According to a survey of its users, the home improvement resource HomeAdvisor found that the average kitchen remodeling project took six weeks to complete. While some homeowners might be turned off by the prospect of having little or no access to their kitchens for more than a month, HomeAdvisor warns that the length of time it takes to complete a kitchen remodeling project depends on a host of factors, including the scope of the project. Some homeowners reported to HomeAdvisor that their projects lasted for several months, though those projects required extensive work, including moving walls and rearranging plumbing. Others who only replaced the flooring and countertops in their kitchens were back in business in just three weeks. Homeowners should always receive a projected completion date when soliciting estimates from contractors. But it’s also important that homeowners plan for unforeseen problems that may arise during the project, thereby extending the length of time necessary to complete it.

POTENTIAL INDICATORS OF ROOF TROUBLE Moss: Moss on a rooftop may give a home character, but that added character is costly. Shady areas of a roof can be susceptible to the growth of moss and fungi because moisture can be trapped in such areas. If possible, remove moss or fungi from a roof with a stiff brush or hire a professional to do the job instead. Moss may come back even after brushing it off, so homeowners should keep an eye on areas of their roofs that get little sunlight. In addition, trapped moisture can be very harmful to a roof, so it may be wise to exercise caution and have roofs with mold or fungi growths inspected.

Guinea Pigs Hide Signs of Illness
I’ll refer to the late Peter Gurney’s brilliant Guinea Pig Health Guide. One suggestion, which you may be able to apply to your surviving guinea pigs, is to have the vet listen to their heartbeat. A heart murmur can indicate valve problems. Another possibility is an undetected fungal or bacterial infection that got into Dale’s system, eventually causing a heart attack. But as you pointed out, he showed no external signs of illness.Forthis mystery, I’ll turn to my readers. Any suggestions for Julie on monitoring her two surviving cavies?Sendyour tips, comments or questions to ask@pawscorner. (c)com.2022

DEAR JULIE: Sadly, it o en can be di cult to tell when a guinea pig is getting ill. ey’re very good at hiding signs of illness, and often they are acutely ill before their owners can tell what’s wrong. It’s clear that you pay close attention to your guinea pigs, as you were aware of Dale’s weight and normal behavior. However, guinea pigs can become ill very quickly. You were right to contact the veterinarian immediately a er noticing Dale’s strange behavior, which I agree, could have been a sign of a stroke or heart attack.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My male guinea pig, Dale, was always healthy. He was fat and not losing weight. One day, we cleaned his cage and noticed that he was sticking his head out repeatedly and opening his mouth -- like yawning. e vet said to come in right away, and within ve minutes of hanging up, Dale was dead. e vet looked at him and said he looked healthy and that maybe he had a heart attack or stroke, but I didn’t see any symptoms. Any help would be great, because we have two others. -- Julie G., via e-mail

There are several herbal treatments (such as saw palmetto, South African star grass, stinging nettle and Africatn plum) for an enlarged prostate with recurring symptoms. Some of my patients take them and feel like they are effective, but the evidence is not definitive. Supplements are not subject to the same standards of purity that prescription medications are. Consequently, I do not recommend these treatments. Tamsulosin (Flomax) and similar drugs are safe and well-tolerated for most men.
Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu.
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 55-year-old male in good health and was diagnosed with a slightly enlarged prostate several years ago. My primary care doctor said he wasn’t concerned enough to prescribe any medications. I get an annual physical, and there haven’t been any changes. However, in the past couple of years, there have been times when, once I get the urge to urinate, I’ve got to get to a restroom posthaste. But, it’s comical at times! Once, I was halfway through a three-hour road trip and started thinking I should stop. I made it all the way home without a problem, but couldn’t make it from my driveway to the restroom. I read up on Flomax, which appears to work for those who have trouble urinating. Are you aware of any over-thecounter medications for my situation? -- R.J.

DENTAL SEALANTS
TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH
ANSWER: I’m glad you can see the humor in the situation. With even one episode of incontinence, I would consider medication if the person wanted it after a discussion.
Prevention is the keystone of optimum oral health. Through sealants, avoidance of tooth-harming foods and beverages, regular visits with the hygienist and dentist, plus
Having dental sealants applied is a quick and painless process. Just as the name implies, sealants are used to “seal” teeth with an added layer of protection from food and bacteria. They are generally applied to molars’ jagged, uneven surfaces that harbor food particles and can be difficult to clean. Sealants have been shown to reduce the risk of tooth decay by 80 percent in molars. Children without sealants have almost three times as many cavities as those with sealants. Sealants are not just for kids, either. For placement of sealants, the earlier in life the better, but they can be applied at any age. They can even be applied to teeth with small cavities to prevent further decay.

Make sure to see your healthcare provider.

Once I found those two sites I went on a hunt for more and found a public library database titled “Finding Recipes for Ingredients You Already Have.” You can check it out at www.penningtonlibrary.org/ nding-recipes-for-ingredients-you-already-have.Maybeyoudon’tneedanothertripto the grocery store, at least not yet. e woman who told me about this talked about a website she discovered where all manner of ingredients could be entered, with the machine scouting the internet for recipes that could be created using those ingredients.Whoever created the SuperCook website (www.supercook.com) did a fantastic job. Meats, grains, fruits, vegetables, dozens of cheeses, nuts, spices, dairy substitutes ... it’s all there, ready to be clicked. We would like to thank the person who found and turned in our black checkbook at the Wegmans in Geneseo. We accidentally left it in our cart outside of Wegmans. We had already left when we discovered our mistake. When we got there, the cart and the checkbook were gone. The checkbook had been turned in to Wegmans by a very kind person with the words, “Keep it safe.” This person has our heartfelt thanks and deepest gratitude. He or she has rekindled our faith in people. Thank you from a very grateful couple!
Our summer is nearing the end, yet the flowers in the Avon Circle Park and the hanging baskets are beautiful and thriving! Thanks to the Avon Garden Club and those who keep them watered.
Flags are flown for many reasons. They show all who drive by our homes what we believe in; what we feel; what we enjoy and, more recently, what we hate. The flags that used to adorn our neighborhoods have quickly changed from inviting to dividing. This is all well and good; as freedom is what the most important of all the flags stands for: the American Flag. For anyone who flies flags, remember that the American Flag is to be respected. Rules have been laid out in the United States Flag Code. One of the most important rules being this: "No other flag or pennant should be placed above or, if on the same level, to the right of the flag of the United States of America.” This rule in particular seems to have been forgotten by some. If flags of hatred & vulgarity are that important to you, go on and fly them. Just be mindful of their placement on your flagpole.

You have to wonder just how serious some folks are about "climate change" and the environment in general. I drove past a very popular coffee shop in [local town] and noticed a line of 9 cars waiting in the drive thru to purchase rather costly coffee or items. How do they think sitting in their cars with engines running and spewing pollution of $5.00 per gallon gas is going to save the world for climate change?

Recently, I was putting a melon in my car parked in the BJ’s parking lot. A boy grabbed my purse and ran. The woman parked next to me asked, “How can I help?” Then, she called the police. A woman parked across from me said, “I’ll follow him in my car.” When the thief ran into an overgrown area, she called her husband who was in line to get gas. He came and went into the bushes after the boy, retrieving my purse. These good Samaritans stayed with me until the police left, losing at least an hour of their day. The police were professional and equally concerned. I offered compensation to my good Samaritans, which they refused, saying they were glad they could help.

* Make your own bed buddy hot pad with a long sock and rice. Use a sock that’s knee high, and fill it about two-thirds with plain, uncooked white rice. Knot it an inch or two from the top of the rice, so it’s nice and loose. Once it’s secure, you can stick the sock into the microwave for 1-2 minutes. The rice heats up and the heat is stored in the rice. It’s wonderful for aches and pains -- or just for keeping toes toasty!

* “When I was a kid, the side of my yard was soft sand, but it’s where my brother and I kept our bikes. I liked my bike to stand up, because it kept the sand out of my gears. The kick stand was sinking in the sand, and my dad gave me an old tennis ball that he had poked a hole into. I put it on the kick stand, and from then on, it stayed standing up. Thought I would share.”

When it comes time to bag the leaves, use biodegradable paper bags or look for mesh-like bags that are made from cornstarch. These are more eco-friendly than plastic bags, which can take much longer to decompose.

* Shower caps can be placed over a planter and used to make a kind of greenhouse for planting cuttings. Just water and place it in a sunfilled window. Be sure to check it often, because even though it may be moderate or even cool out, your little greenhouse can get pretty hot with only a few hours of sun.
