Gardeners Would you kindly tell me why my hydrangeas will not bloom? I have a blue one - it had two flowers this year. I did give them the proper food to turn them blue - and they were blue. I also have a pink and red one. They have not bloomed in a number of years. I do leave the wood until the following spring. I do not trim them back in the fall. My oak leaf hydrangeas bloom beautifully. Any suggestions? They are in the front of the house and face west. Thank you! - Lisa D.
from Cornell Cooperative Extension, Livingston County
Your problem with a non-blooming macrophyla (big leaf) hydrangea is common. This plant has hardy roots, but the buds are not very hardy. They get frozen during the winter or are sometimes munched off by deer. Fluctuating temperatures during the winter have made this problem worse. Sometimes, these plants bloom for the first few years then the blooms diminish. You can try surrounding it with a wire cage, then filling it with mulched fall leaves to provide more winter protection. The website Hy-
drangeasintheNorth.com illustrates group. Your Oakleaf hydrangea is a different method of pruning which from another hardy group: Hydrangea may increase your blooms. You may Quercifolia. consider replacing it with a more reliable bloomer, including one from the Hydrangea Arborescens group, or a macrophyla bred to include some of the hardy genetics of the Serrata

STAYING ON TOP OF “GOING UNDER” The idea of being put under anesthesia can be stressful for some people, and many are unsure about the process when it comes to visiting their dentist. Is it necessary? Is it safe? First, if it’s local anesthesia, there is no loss of consciousness involved, merely a numbing of the area being worked on. However, with certain procedures, such as tooth extraction, sedation is often recommended, but because it is performed by a trained professional, it is a very safe procedure. Often the professional is the dentist, but some practices employ full-time anesthesiologists if they perform a high number of extractions and oral surgeries. While there are always risks associated with sedation, they are considered minimal. Modern dental technology is the result of years of research by
professionals dedicated to making dental care as painless as possible, effective, efficient, and long-lasting. For compassionate dental care, including complete restorations, cosmetic dentistry, and regular cleanings, our primary goal is to treat our patients with the best, most up-to-date, gentle dentistry possible. Office hours are by appointment at BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, 6 Batavia City Centre, a very pleasant place to get a new smile. Call for an appointment at 585.343.4246. We accept most insurances. P.S. In rare occasions, dental anesthesia can have side effects such as hematoma at the injection site, nerve damage, and rapid heart rate.

DID YOU KNOW?
By Keith Roach, M.D.
Diet Is Powerful Tool to Boost Heart Health --DEAR DR. ROACH: I have a strong history of premature heart disease in my family, and I have been having some unpleasant side effects of blood pressure medicine. I decided to try a completely plant-based diet: grains, vegetables, legumes, fruit, seeds and nuts. After about a month on the new diet, my total cholesterol dropped 44 points to 159, and the other numbers went from borderline to normal, as measured by my cardiologist. My blood pressure, which was often high in the mornings (typically 150+/90), was 118/68 this morning. I’ve only lost about 5 pounds in the past couple of months, and I’m probably still 8-10 pounds overweight. I am pleased with the results, but why didn’t any of my doctors recommend this? -- J.S.B. ANSWER: Diet is a powerful tool for improving overall health, especially heart health. I believe it is underemphasized by most physicians. Changing from a meat-based diet to a mostly plant-based diet often prompts improvements in blood pressure, cholesterol and weight. Your results are better than most, but by no means unheard of. You haven’t said how you feel, but many people feel more energetic as well. Many others are able to come off of some (occasionally all) of their medications, which of course reduces side effects. Why don’t physicians recommend it? I think it’s a combination of reasons. Some doctors don’t realize how powerful the effects of dietary change can be. A good deal of patients are highly resistant to making changes, so physicians are used to their dietary advice failing. Also, taking the time to get an accurate diet history is hard, personalizing dietary advice is harder, and writing a prescription is easy. It is not necessary to have a 100% vegan diet like yours to experience a benefit. A mostly plant-based diet has substantial benefits. It’s easier for some people to make incremental changes. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I’ve been taking Viagra for several years with good results for my wife and me. Recently my prescription drug coverage administrator has begun restricting my access to 12 pills every 30 days. I’ve requested an explanation from the company without success. My prescription is written by my heart doctor, and he is not aware of any reason to restrict my access to Viagra. Is there some danger in taking Viagra (sildenafil) on a regular basis? The literature supplied with the prescription, from Pfizer, does not indicate a limit on use. I’d appreciate your feedback on this, as it will affect my wife’s and my happiness. -- J.R. ANSWER: The insurance company isn’t worried about your safety: Sildenafil (Viagra) and similar drugs are safe for daily use in most people, and your cardiologist is certainly the right person to make that determination, not your insurance company. Instead, the drug limits are there to save money for the insurance company. People can make up their own minds about whether that is reasonable or not, but it is a near-universal finding now. One way many patients get around this (if they are taking 25 mg or 50 mg) is to get the larger-size tablet and cut it in half (a pill cutter can do this well), since the limit is on the number of tablets, not the number of milligrams. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. DID YOU KNOW? The World Health Organization notes that childhood obesity rates are on the rise across the globe, but things may be improving in the United States. According to the WHO, as of 2014, an estimated 41 million children under the age of five were overweight or obese. But while childhood obesity is on the rise in Asia and Africa, the U.S. has made strides in its efforts to curb childhood obesity. In 2004, 13.9 percent of children in the United States qualified as obese. By 2012, the figure had dropped to 8.4 percent. That’s welcome news in the U.S., as the WHO notes that children who are obese are likely to remain obese as adults, increasing their risk for heart disease, type 2 diabetes and asthma. There also are economic incentives to reducing childhood obesity, as the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation notes that the tab for America’s obesity epidemic is roughly $117 billion per year. Those costs include lost productivity at work and the medical expenses that can be directly linked to obesity.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH
The number of people who smoke is on the decline, as a 2018 report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention noted that the percentage of adults in the United States who smoke cigarettes declined from roughly 21 percent in 2005 to 15.5 percent in 2016. That decline has no doubt helped reduce overall cancer death rates, though the figures regarding smoking-related deaths are still staggering. According to the CDC, smoking accounts for more than 480,000 deaths each year in the United States. The 2018 report from the CDC indicates that men (17.5 percent) are more likely than women (13.5 percent) to smoke cigarettes. In addition, the report notes a correlation between education and the likelihood of smoking cigarettes. While smoking was lowest among people who had graduate degrees, with only five out of every 100 such adults being smokers, smoking rates were highest (40.6 percent) among adults with graduate education degree certificates, or GEDs. While people who had no high school diploma were less likely to smoke cigarettes than GED recipients, the CDC report found that smoking rates declined the more education people received.

“People seem to me to be happiest when they are working for nothing and can afford to do so…” ~ Robert S. Lynd
As an American sociologist of considerable note, Lynd spoke with the authority of experience. He observed that when people are engaged in volunteer work, they are usually doing what they enjoy best. Most people work for nothing because they truly enjoy the work for which they volunteer. Although this may seem to apply mainly to retired persons, most of us could afford to volunteer a few hours to projects where our help is greatly needed. Our reward would be rich…Happiness! The rewards of pre-planning one’s own funeral service are peace of mind and the satisfaction of knowing your desires will be carried out. NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Cooking a recipe with garlic and onions to start? Invite me to dinner! But first, remember to let the onions cook to nearly translucent before adding the garlic, which cooks much faster. If you put both in at the same time, the garlic will burn before the onions have a chance to deepen their flavor. * Automatic toilets are great for not having to touch the handles, but they can be scary for kids -- and some adults too, if I’m being honest. Try putting a sticky note over the sensor so that it will not flush until you take it off, giving you some control. * “For chores, I write tasks on sticky notes and put them up on our family board. The kids choose the things they want to do, and when they are done to my satisfaction I sign their ticket. At the end of the week, they can bring me the tickets to pay out. This is for extra money, so they don’t have to do it; I don’t have to chase them, and I don’t have to keep track of it either.” -- E.L. in Montana * Every so often, use a very diluted bleach solution to rinse out your reusable water bottles. Put them on a bottle rack to air dry completely before sealing them back up. * “I use the same grip tape that my son uses for his baseball bat on my hand tools, like my hammer and pry bar. I also have used it on my lawn tools. It makes a nice barrier that stays put.” -- C.R. in South Carolina * Things you should wash with soap and water more often than you think: hairbrushes, eyeglasses (and sunglasses) and keychains. Think about how often they get handled and how infrequently they get cleaned.

Just Kings Strengthens
and Inspires Batavia Community
BY AMANDA DUDEK
I
t started as a peaceful march for equality on June 7th. However, it quickly grew into something more: a group which is deeply enriching the City of Batavia and beyond. Beginning with ten men of color, Just Kings was established to better the Batavia community. The origin of their group name is inspiring. “We sat down and pondered what to call ourselves,” said Haven Armstrong, brother to one of the men who organized the march. “We chose Just for behaving according to what is good and right, or ‘just.’ ‘Kings’ is a term of high respect among black males.” Members began interacting with the community in many ways. “We get involved in pretty much everything from coaching kids to addressing community tensions to helping people addicted to drugs or alcohol,” stated Armstrong. They also held an event to help children have the things they needed for going back to school. “We held it in Austin Park rather than any particular neighborhood because we do not want to embarrass or offend anyone. My brother, owner of Royals, came out and gave haircuts to those in need, as well. Color, sex, religion, politics, or anything else didn’t matter. We just wanted to support these kids.” The group is quickly finding its footing. They have a community to reach, and they are connecting with other places to help out. They are also in the process of becoming a nonprofit. “We haven’t narrowed down exactly what we will focus on yet,” explained Armstrong. “Many people are reaching out to us such as Mayors and the Chief of Police, so we are helping around the city.” Recently, Just Kings chose Victor Thomas, who also organized their initial march, to be the group’s spokesperson and sit on the Police Reform Committee for Batavia. “We have all been subject to the system in one way or another, and while it is a bit better now, there is obviously a lot worldwide that needs to be reformed,” Armstrong explained, adding that Just Kings has had a lot of interaction and cooperation with the Batavia Police. “Growing up, we only saw the police for bad things,” he recalled, encouraging officers to be in their communities often, get to know the people, and help out. Batavia resident Sharena Majors believes the Batavia community is so fortunate to experience Just Kings’ involvement. “From the start, one of Just Kings’ missions has always been to stand up for the black community,” she said. “The Kings continually work towards educating our youth, members of our community, and members of neighboring communities as they mentor and set positive examples. It is amazing to see an organization of well-respected black men who are great fathers, brothers, and friends from our very own community. They are passionate, dedicated, strong and have such big hearts.” In keeping with their leadership mindset, Just Kings held the historic, first Juneteenth event ever to take place in Batavia, drawing congressmen, city officials and others to participate. “We saw that the knowledge we had gained over the years wasn’t being spread through the Black community,” said Armstrong. “It wasn’t until nearly 100 years after the first 4th of July celebration that we were actually free. So, we made up pamphlets about what it was and why we should celebrate it both in the African Community and the country as a whole. For our culture not to know what Juneteenth was – that was upsetting to us.” Educating and supporting area youth are of key importance. “In Batavia, there is little constructive to do,” shared Armstrong, a self-described ‘troubled kid’ who credits the army for saving him. “People lack education. I have a GED, and I do nothing but read and educate myself and my children. I like to have

conversations with anyone about anything at any time. Knowledge is a constant progression.” For Armstrong, education is largely self-education. “We see how our history is often portrayed in our schools,” he said. “My son came home and told us about our history starting with slavery, but our culture existed long before that. We have to educate young black students on what our culture actually was. Educating my children uplifts them and gives them a perspective on what had been accomplished so they can hold their heads up high.” Just Kings hopes to combine education with understanding. “We are not looking for apologies nor for people to be overly sympathetic, rather just an acknowledgement of what happened and what the system has been – and empathy,” said Armstrong. “Put yourself in our shoes and realize we need total reforms. Embrace what we are doing right now.” Violence, however, is unacceptable. “We should not be so vicious that we justify why people are being killed,” Armstrong explained. “The fact that a person was killed should make you feel some type of way, and if we have gotten to the point where we can justify that, that’s not okay. At the same time, while we do not want confrontation, we are not shy to expose or call out wrongdoing on the spot.” This bold, positive leadership inspires Majors. “It’s amazing to see them actively turn the wheel of change and bring about a new level of positivity and understanding,” she said. “The Kings always strive to bring our community together while providing knowledge and awareness and caring for our kids. That is huge because our children are the future. Just Kings plans to continue to bring positivity, knowledge, love, opportunity, and change to our community and the surrounding area.”

I took my Springer Spaniel, “Rog,” for a walk in the woods this morning. When we got back, I noticed he was trying to lick a spot behind his shoulder. I found a thin scratch on his skin. be healing, Rog should be fine. Check the area once a day and reapply antibacterial ointment. If it begins to appear puffy and red, or Rog seems very distressed by it, take him to the vet for further evaluation. Most minor scratches on a dog’s skin and paws can be treated at home using the household first-aid kit. You also can build a pet first-aid kit that is easy to access when you walk into the house. In addition to antibacterial ointment (avoid products with hydrocortisone), it should have antiseptic solution, water-based lubricant like KY (not Vaseline), clean towels, an empty squeeze bottle (like a ketchup bottle), tick-removal tweezers, a muzzle, small scissors and a disposable razor to gently remove fur. (Electric clippers are an even safer option.) To treat a small scratch or cut, fill the squeeze bottle with lukewarm water. Hold your dog securely, placing a muzzle on him to prevent bites if he gets agitated. Trim or shave away hair from the area. Gently clean the wound using the squeeze bottle of water. Pat dry. Dab the antiseptic onto the wound, then apply antibiotic ointment. Cover lightly with a bandage if possible; otherwise, prevent your dog from licking away the ointment for at least 10 minutes. Check and reapply ointment daily as it heals.

SIMPLE WAYS TO WINTERIZE YOUR HOME Leaky windows and doorways can cost homeowners money year-round, allowing cold air to escape on hot summer afternoons and letting cold air in on brisk winter nights. When such leaks aren’t fixed, homeowners are more liable to turn up their air conditioners or heaters, unnecessarily padding their energy bills along the way. Before winter arrives, check areas around windows and door frames for leaks, as well as any additional openings, such as chimneys, that may allow cold air in. Use caulk or weather strips to plug these leaks, and enjoy your warmer home and lower energy bills as winter weather gets colder and colder.

PROBLEMS THAT CAN LEAD TO LAWN DAMAGE
PLUMBING
Lack of sunlight: All plants need the proper ratio of sunlight to grow. Too much sunlight and plant blades can scorch. Too little sunlight and grass may turn brown and die. Although there are shade-tolerant varieties of grass, homeowners also can explore alternative landscapes. Work in a garden bed or create a design that utilizes gravel or mulch. Avoid aggressively pruning back trees to give the lawn more sunlight in that area, as this may just damage the trees.
Need A Plumber? • All water heaters including tankless • High efficiency furnaces, AC & boilers • Water conditioning systems & Goulds well pumps • All general household plumbing • Drain cleaning WAYS TO MAKE HOMES SAFER Repair loose floorboards and pull carpet taut if it has started to stretch out. Address cracks outdoors and ensure that patio stones, bricks and pavers are secure and level to reduce tripping hazards. Fix areas of the landscape where water may pool and freeze, creating potential hazards.

HOW TO AVOID THE COLD COMFORT OF A DRAFTY HOUSE For those who live in older homes, the transition to colder weather can be extra disheartening, as the vision of expensive heating bills, chilly rooms and drafty windows dance in their heads. However, it’s easy to change the outlook from cold to cozy with a few simple DIY solutions. The most effective way to improve the comfort level in your home is to properly insulate. Insulation can be inadequate in older homes. Over time, it can settle and compact, creating gaps. Topping up attic insulation will help keep the warm air in, reducing heating bills and preventing stress on your furnace. For easy installation, homeowners and professionals alike recommend a stone wool batt insulation. For attics, aim for an r-value of R-50 or a depth of 16 inches. A little preparation can go a long way to keep the cold at bay. Seal out drafts by replacing worn weatherstripping and caulking along windows, doors, baseboards, and trim. For other ways to beat the cold, consider inexpensive window insulation kits along with thicker drapes, and don’t forget to reverse ceiling fans to push warm air back down.

WALGREENS IS THE BEST! Mary Ann is always so nice and kind at the checkout counter. She was one of the main reasons why I started going to Walgreen’s in Brockport. She is very capable when it comes to voiding items that will not be accepted on my insurance card. Not only does she do her job very well, but she is always very pleasant. From what I have experienced since shopping at Walgreens for the past 10 months, they seem to train their employees not only to do an excellent job, but also to treat their customers the way customers should be
treated. Keep up the good work! It does not go unnoticed, and it is very much appreciated, especially during these difficult times. Thank you!
MUSIC My suggestion to the person who hates neighbor playing music is to re-locate in the country where you will not have to contend with anyone and anything. Do dogs barking bother you? How about children in a neighbor’s yard? You should be ashamed of yourself for complaining about such a trivial thing. There are so many more serious issues in this world. Consider yourself blessed if the worst thing your neighbors are doing is playing music. Perhaps if you listen to some music, it will bring you much needed relief for whatever is going on in your mind.
RABBLE-ROUSERS People who oppose a new business in a town before there is even a public hearing to hear the proposal, and they do not even live in the town or hamlet, people who wrongly say they are speaking for everyone else, saying they know for a fact that most of the people don’t want this, people who say instead of a chain store they’d like to see a small family-owned business or a business unique to the community take over the space, then why don’t those of you opposing the “chain store” be the ones who open a small family-owned business or a business unique to the

I wish to thank the staff there and hope that their work continues to be properly funded.
community in the proposed space? Don’t talk the talk unless you can walk the walk. PLEASE BE CONSIDERATE I have to wonder why some customers can’t follow store rules during this pandemic. Working as a cashier at a retail store, I too often need to ask people to keep their distance from a current customer and to stand back and wait to be called up to the register. Too many times, I get berated by customers who can’t read the signs or follow instructions. If you can follow these rules in a grocery store, why is it so hard to also do it in a retail store? Cashiers do need to take

Please be kind, don’t throw fits, or your stuff, on the belt until we’re ready. Be considerate of others or take advantage of home delivery or outside pickup services. Thank you.

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles It's hard nowadays to know where to get accurate free information online. Here are two trusted, responsible places we can go. Consumer Reports: While CR would like you to subscribe to their monthly print or online magazine, you don't have to do that to get information. Sign up for their various newsletters (weekly or monthly) and zero in on what you'd like to know about: a weekly What's New, home (appliances and products), cars, health (nutrition, drugs, fitness and safety), food, money (finances, investing, tax planning, retirement) and shopping. You can opt to receive one, a few or all of these in your email. Go online to www.consumerreports.org, scroll to the bottom and click on Sign Up for CR's Free Newsletters. Kim Komando: Known as a Digital Goddess, Kim Komando been on the Internet (as well as radio) for many years. She won't steer you wrong. A recent email newsletter covered 10 cybersecurity myths, how to tell if someone is snooping in your computer, a Windows patch that fixes 100 new flaws, and more. The website even has a coronavirus section with makes-sense information and news. There are 12 email newsletters to choose from, some daily and some weekly, including breaking tech news you need to know, tech tips & how-tos, weekend digital digest and weekly roundup, fraud and security alerts, and more. Go online to www.komando.com and scroll to Subscribe at the bottom of the page. You can opt out or change your mind at any time, and they won't give away your personal information. I've been a subscriber for close to 10 years, and I've never suspected my information was given out. If you want to listen to Kim Komando on the radio, look for Find A Station at the top of her web page and put in your ZIP code. It will give you the stations, date and time of the radio shows. Stretch. Bodies that have been inactive for lengthy periods of time are inflexible, and lack of flexibility increases your risk for injury. The AAOS recommends that seniors warm up their bodies before stretching with five to 10 minutes of low-intensity activity such as walking. Then stretch gently, remembering to relax and breathe during each stretch.

The cost of college tuition is a concern for many college-bound students and their families. The cost of a college education continues to rise, but it’s not just tuition and room and board that students and their families must account for. College students may underestimate cost-of-living expenses when planning their school-year budgets. But such expenses can be substantial, catching even the most well-prepared students off guard. Fortunately, there are several ways for college students to save money on living expenses and still make the most of their time on campus.

TECH TO TAKE ALONG ON YOUR NEXT ROAD TRIP Chargers: Many people feel their devices are extensions of themselves, but such devices won’t be of much help if they are routinely running out of power. Bring along several chargers that can be plugged into your car so you and your passengers can keep your smartphones and other devices running throughout the trip. Though the idea of going off the grid might seem enticing, leaving the world behind is less romantic when you need roadside assistance or are in search of a restroom or a place to pull over and grab a meal. If you want to disconnect from the world, you can always switch your phone to airplane mode. But keeping the phone charged can help in case of emergency.
