Discover The Human Touch In Hearing Technology
TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Better to Sleep on Left Side or Right?
Lakeville 3513 Thomas Dr., Suite 2 Henrietta
---
20 Finn Road, Suite C
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a man in my late 50s. I now am told to sleep on my right side and not my left side, because it’s better for the heart. However, my sinuses seem to open up and it’s easier to breathe lying on my left side. What, if anything, will happen if I sleep on my left side? Can it damage the heart permanently or lead to an early death? -- M.N. ANSWER: Most people can sleep in whatever position they find comfortable without any problem. However, there are a few instances in which sleeping on the left side may potentially cause problems. One is in people with untreated obstructive sleep apnea, in which several studies have shown that sleeping on the left side leads to slightly more breathing problems than sleeping on the right. However, in people who are treated, that should not be a problem. Pregnant women should sleep on their side. Although women have often been recommended to sleep on their left side, either side is fine for the baby. Left-sided sleeping may reduce swelling in the feet. People with known severe congestive heart failure or coronary artery disease and who habitually sleep on the left side have a small increase in death compared with back or right-side sleepers. However, my opinion is that the benefit is so small that comfort and quality of sleep is more important. ***
Caring for you and the community since 2001.

Summer health and beauty guidelines Get a healthier glow. Many people equate health and vitality to tan skin. However, spending time outdoors in the sun or using indoor tanning beds that expose you to UV rays can increase your risk of skin cancer, including dangerous melanoma. The American Cancer Society says melanoma will account for more than 73,000 cases of invasive skin cancer in 2015. Melanoma accounts for more than 9,900 of the roughly 13,000 skin cancer deaths each year. Sunless tanners and bronzers can give skin that sun-kissed look without the downside of exposure to UV rays. Those who must go out in the sun should wear a wide-brimmed hat and limit their exposure between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when the sun’s rays are at their strongest.
DEAR DR. ROACH: I have read that many runners drink too much water and that this can be dangerous. What are the signs of drinking too much? -- H.C. ANSWER: Exercise-associated hyponatremia (“hypo” means “too little,” and “natremia” means “sodium in the blood”) is common for endurance athletes, such as long-distance triathletes and marathoners. It is caused by losing salt and water, mostly through sweat, and replacing it with only water. Most cases are mild and have few symptoms, but if there are symptoms, they are most commonly weakness, headache and dizziness. Severe cases cause disorientation and can lead to seizures and death. In a study of the Boston Marathon in 2002, 13% of finishers had hyponatremia, but only 1% had critical levels. To avoid hyponatremia, you need to ignore the advice to “drink as much as possible” during exercise. Further, most sports drinks do not have enough sodium to protect against hyponatremia. As simple as the advice is, drinking when you are thirsty when you exercise is the best way of preventing hyponatremia while still preventing volume depletion or dehydration. ***
DEAR DR. ROACH: You wrote last year about cod liver oil as a source of vitamin D and omega-3. Can you recommend a brand? -- M.E.T. ANSWER: I don’t like to recommend specific brands unless there are scientific studies showing a difference between brands, which I can’t find with cod liver oil. However, I would look for a brand that is labeled “certified USP,” meaning it is tested for contaminants, and one that has a low vitamin A level (below 10,000 IU daily). You also might want one with high (450 mg or greater) EPA plus DPA (the most commonly recommended omega-3 fats). *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. We Care About ut
Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy
DENTURES OR DENTAL IMPLANTS? For decades, dentures have been the standard replacement for missing teeth. Modern denture technology has improved to the point where customfit dentures, made of various materials, can look and feel exactly like natural teeth. However, times are changing, and both patients and dentists have come to view dental implants as their first choice for tooth replacement. Although implants may cost more initially, they can last a lifetime and donít have to be removed to be refitted or cleaned. Indistinguishable from natural teeth, dental implants also will not slip or move, which provides patients with more confidence when talking and eating. Once fully healed, dental implants allow for a normal diet and routine without any special considerations.
If you are interested in finding out how implants can be of benefit to you and your smile, just give us a call at 585.343.4246. We have years of experience turning imperfect smiles into ones our patients are proud to display. Join our list of happy patients. When you need dental care of any kind, BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL is here at 6 Batavia City Centre. P.S. If you notice that you are brushing your teeth too hard, try moving the brush in a small, circular motion, rather than brushing back and forth.

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson Here’s a great way to make waterproof matches for camping. Light a candle or use a wax melt in a warmer. When the wax is good and melted, get a box of matches ready (preferably strike-anywhere matches, but strike on box works, too). Dip each match head into the melted wax and set aside on a piece of parchment until dry and hardened.

The facts about glaucoma SENIORS AND EXERCISE: TIPS TO AVOID INJURIES, GET HEALTHY Start slowly. Seniors who have not been physically active for some time should take a gradual approach to exercise. Instead of heading right for the treadmill, exercise bike or elliptical machine, start walking every day. When it rains, find a treadmill you can walk on. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons recommends seniors begin by determining how many steps they can take in a day and then gradually working toward 10,000 to 15,000 steps per day. Utilize step counting apps on your smartphone to track your progress. Apply the same slow approach to strength training exercises, lifting only very light weights at first before gradually increasing weight as your body acclimates to the exercises.

When one’s vision is compromised, his or her whole life can change in the blink of an eye. Many conditions can affect a person’s vision, and one of the more common is glaucoma, a leading cause of blindness across the globe. The global impact of glaucoma is significant. The World Health Organization estimates that 4.5 million people are blind due to glaucoma. In addition, the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness notes that some estimates have suggested that there will be approximately 80 million people with glaucoma by 2020. If such estimates prove true, that would mean an additional 20 million cases of glaucoma were diagnosed between 2010 and 2020. Vision loss is often associated with glaucoma. However, the National Eye Institute notes that early detection and treatment can protect the eyes against serious vision loss. That makes it imperative that individuals from all walks of life learn about glaucoma, its risk factors and how to recognize it. What is glaucoma? Glaucoma is a term used to describe a group of diseases that damage the eye’s optic nerve. When such damage occurs, vision loss and even blindness can result. What is the optic nerve and why does it matter? The NEI notes that the optic nerve is a bundle of more than one million nerve fibers that connects the retina to the brain. The retina is the lightsensitive tissue at the back of the eye that contains cells which are sensitive to light. These cells trigger nerve impulses that pass via the optic nerve to the brain, where visual images are then formed. Because its role is so significant, the optic nerve must be healthy for good vision. What are the most common types of glaucoma? According to the IAPB, primary open angle glaucoma, or POAG, and primary angle closure glaucoma, or PACG, are the most common types of the condition. POAG is most common in white Caucasians and black individuals of African origin, while PACG, which is associated with a greater risk of blindness than POAG, is most common in people from southeast Asia. The Glaucoma Research Foundation says that POAG develops slowly and is the most common form of glaucoma and is caused by the slow clogging of the drainage canals that produces increased pressure on the eye. PACG, which the GRF notes is quick to develop, results when the drainage canals are blocked, resulting in a sudden rise in intraocular pressure. What are the symptoms of glaucoma? Because POAG develops slowly, its symptoms often go unnoticed. Symptoms of PACG, however, are often very noticeable and may include severe and sudden eye pain; blurred vision; bright halos appearing around objects; eye redness, tenderness, and hardness; and nausea and vomiting. Can glaucoma be treated? While there is no cure for glaucoma and vision lost to it cannot be restored, the NEI notes that treatment for early-stage POAG can effectively delay progression of the disease.

TIPS TO MAKE AN OLDER HOME MORE ENERGY EFFICIENT Switch to LED light bulbs. Some LED light bulbs have a lifespan of up to 10 years, and are 80 to 90 percent more efficient than incandescent bulbs. They are generally more environmentally friendly than CFLs and safer, too, since they produce less heat. The return on investment is excellent, as LED bulbs often pay for themselves through energy savings within the first year.
CONSERVE WATER WHEN TEMPERATURES RISE Spring and summer are synonymous with increased hours of sunlight, warm temperatures and, oftentimes, an increased reliance on water to feed recreational pursuits and lawn and garden needs. The Water Information Program states that 3.9 trillion gallons of water are consumed in the United States each month and the average person uses 176 gallons of water per day. Water conservation may be essential when the risk for weather-related drought looms. Practicing year-round conservation efforts can help ensure smart usage of local watersheds, lakes and reservoirs and help maintain these water sources for years to come. It also helps the average person reduce his or her carbon footprint while saving people a little money along the way.

FALL IS FOR PLANTING A lot of people ask why fall is for planting. Fall has distinct planting benefits. Autumn’s cooler air temperatures are easier on both plants and gardeners. The soil is still warm, allowing roots to grow until the ground freezes. Fall has more good days for planting than spring does, when rain and other unpredictable weather can make working the soil impossible. Furthermore, our nurseries that we select our quality perennial, annual, ornamental, and tree products from would rather sell their remaining product than store their stock over winter. With that in mind, our nurseries that we work with pass along a discount on their stock to us, and we like to pass that along to our exsiting and new customers. With that being said, don’t hesitate. Call our office today or e-mail us at the link below to start rejuvinating and/or building a new landscape with some beautiful spectacular plantings to your home or business!

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) It might not be wise to pursue goals involving others, unless you can stop impulsively rejecting new ideas. Either open your mind or wait until next week, when this “ornery” mood passes. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) It’s a good time for the Bovine to be creative and practical for yourself and your surroundings. Shop wisely, not impulsively, and keep your Bull’s eye focused on quality, not quantity. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You should feel more confident about moving ahead with plans that had to be delayed by an unexpected turn of events. Also, family matters might need more time than first anticipated. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Be considerate of others as you move into a new area in your professional life. Take time to meet people and discuss mutual goals. The more you get to know each other, the better. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Creating a fuss could get your ideas noticed quickly. But it would be best to present your case, and then wait for a reaction to follow in due course, rather than try to force it to happen. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Unkept promises might cause plans to go awry this week. You can either grumble about people “letting you down” or find a way to make the best of it and move on. The choice is yours. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Putting off making a commitment early in the week could be a good move. Best to act when you know you’re making an informed decision. Expect more facts to emerge by the week’s end. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A recent act of kindness on your part could take on special meaning this week. Also, look for signs of upcoming changes in both your personal and professional relationships. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Many of the tougher communication barriers between you and others in the workplace or at home could begin breaking down this week. Expect some surprises to emerge. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Your “tough love” attitude toward someone you care for could be misunderstood. Try to be less judgmental and show more consideration in the way you relate to that person. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) An unexpected workplace challenge could be daunting. But take what you know (and you know more than you realize) and apply it to the problem, and you should see positive results. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Recent relationship changes for both single and paired Pisces continue to influence much of your week. Keep your focus on developing the positive aspects as you move along. BORN THIS WEEK: You set your goals with assurance and influence others to follow suit. You would be an excellent philosopher and teacher. (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

OTHER RESTORE RUSTY TOOLS Many people may be tempted to discard rusty tools that have gone unused and sat in a garage or shed for a significant period of time. But tools encrusted with rust do not need to be relegated to the trash bin, nor do gardeners have to toil for hours scraping and sanding off the rust. There’s a much easier way to restore rusty tools that relies on a common household ingredient: vinegar. Pour vinegar into a deep enough vessel to submerge the metal part of the tool. Soak the tool overnight. The next day, use a scouring pad to rub off the rust. If the tool is too big to fit into a can or bucket, simply wrap it with a vinegarsoaked rag and cover the whole tool with a tightly secured plastic bag. Follow the same procedure the next day. After all the rust is gone, rinse the tool in cool water and dry thoroughly. Then return it to regular usage. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

A giant thank you to Steve Clarke (and the entire Clarke family) in Groveland Station for helping Jim and me with our emergencies. You are wonderful neighbors, and we can’t thank you enough.
A couple of weeks ago, a grandmother and her three granddaughters each made a couple of batches of cookies. They packaged them, set up little stands in their neighborhoods in different areas of Avon and sold the cookies. They received over $250 that they then took to a grocery store to buy food for the Avon Food Pantry. They brought the groceries
Sassy’s story in the August 23rd edition of Pet Pal touched my heart more than any other I have read. I hope that Sassy and her Mom are together for many more years to come. Her picture is especially heartwarming. She looks like such a sweet girl.

While at a local restaurant and inn, having eaten our food, we left our payment in the bill holders and left. Someone stole the money we left for one of our bills (We had 3 separate checks.) That money had to be replaced by the young waitress we had. It came out of her pocket. The person who took the money had no conscience. Needless to say, I will never leave until the money gets to the waitress from now on. So, everyone, please make sure your payment gets to the waitress, including any tip. It is not fair that they lose money because someone else is a thief!
they are a schoolteacher with the summer off, or maybe they are a farmer? The heat can be hard on individual’s midday. Maybe they have a health condition or are trying to avoid heat stroke. I would rather my neighbor mow nightly between 5-8pm maintaining their yard instead of letting their yard turn into a tick paradise. Maybe you could offer to help you neighbor, or you could move to a city or town. True country folk would not bat an eye at this. Be a kind person and talk to your neighbor to learn their story. Good luck.

Why doesn’t the [local town] start fining a local business owner for all the junk cars he has at three of his businesses? It makes the town look bad. The fire department has warned him numerous times about cars blocking the entrance to his yard in

to the pantry and put them on the pantry shelves to help people in need. What a great learning experience. Many life skills were learned, ending with the good feeling of helping others in the community. A great big thank you from the Avon Food Pantry to that giving family! case of fire. All these junk cars attract rats and mice. Maybe if fines were imposed, he would clean up his mess. Make him get rid of this junk at all three businesses!
I am an elderly woman who has lived in several places across the country. I have always appreciated the work that [business] does. Through the years, my family, friends and I have made donations of clothing and household furnishings. We have always been impressed by the friendliness, courtesy and assistance the staff have given us. In most places, the staff members come right out and cheerfully offer to help to unload the car. I am downsizing and have started my donations. Recently I parked near the entrance to the Donation Center, went in and asked for assistance. I was ignored at first, then told, “We can’t leave

the front door. If we do, we get yelled at.” I was grudgingly given a cart. I am concerned about the heavier items I will be bringing soon. I now feel that my donations are unwanted. Please keep your mess out of the street when mowing your yard. Not only is it unsightly, but it can also be hazardous. Last year, my husband ran over grass in the road, and unfortunately, a bolt from the mower was in the debris and punctured his tire. The tire deflated quickly. This could have caused a blowout which could have ended badly. It’s your grass; keep it in your own yard.

Heather Colella of Holley Helps Local Medina Family By Amanda Dudek
O
n Thursday, July 18th, Heather Colella and her company, DC Hauling, Excavating and Snow Plowing laid a beautiful, new, pressed gravel driveway for a Medina family in need. This family’s 15 year-old daughter has several health and special needs, and the family’s dirt driveway contained several large, gaping potholes, causing her to be jostled violently in her wheelchair as she was transported to and from her own home. A caregiver called DC Hauling on behalf of the family. It immediately became clear why the 15 year-old’s grandmother and primary caretaker was having difficulty navigating the driveway as her granddaughter’s bus aide to and from the Batavia School for the Blind. The family was not only concerned that their daughter might be injured maneuvering their driveway, but also that the bus may be damaged or worse, other disabled students on the bus may be injured, as well. “We went out to the home and determined that a proper driveway repair would require 30 tons of stone,” said Colella. The family was unable to afford replacement costs, but Heather Colella assured them that, one way or another, their daughter would receive the safe driveway she deserved. Colella set up a Facebook Fundraiser for the family’s driveway repair and set the goal at $300, an amount she honestly did not expect to reach. Within the hour, it had passed its goal, eventually tapering off around $800. “I am still so grateful and blown away by the selfless acts of kindness from the amazing people in our community,” said Colella. “Lipson Total Care gave us the use of the roller for the driveway. The owner of Heather and Dan Colella pitch in Keeler Construction at Homesteads for Hope! donated 30 tons of stone!” Giving back is nothing new for Colella. “I collected coupons for years,” she said. “So, people turn to you when others are in need. We would always go out of our way because we had extra. When I started my company, I became the director of the Holley baseball program. I sponsored a team, and I ran the program for a couple of years on my own.” Colella also had previously volunteered as the videographer for Holley’s high school football program and has since donated the use of a trailer as a float and for transporting the high school band in a Holley Homecoming Parade. Colella also volunteered as a bell ringer at JP’s and helped out at Homesteads for Hope in Spencerport with Founder Jenny Brongo whom Colella says she admires. “I am always looking for ways to give back, checking the Genesee Valley Penny Saver and other papers, attending

The successful nonprofit helps motorcycle accident victims and their families. Colella also hopes to get involved with some golf tournaments next year. Colella plans to do more for those who are disabled, Veterans and disabled Veterans in the future, as well. “Giving is a lifestyle for me,” shared Colella. “I believe we were all put here for that reason. If you give selflessly for no other reason than to help others, it changes you inside. You want to continue because of how it makes you feel, not for the results or to get something back or because someone thanks you. The good you are doing will not always be returned by the person you are helping, but it will Medina family driveway view before & after. come back to you many times over in other ways. “Worry never solved a problem…” ~ Frederic Harrison There are probably very few of us who don’t let worry get the best of us from time to time. It’s perfectly natural that we tend to be concerned with the problems that affect us. But, it would be strange, indeed, if we didn’t make an effort to correct the situations that upset the equanimity of our lives. However, worry over matters beyond our control only serves to add more stress and unpleasantness to the normal quotas of worries we must deal with in everyday life. It may be helpful to realize that most of our worries never really materialize! Our staff is qualified to provide answers to your questions regarding Social Security or Veteran’s benefits. Phone for information or for an appointment, at our office or in your home if you prefer. No obligation.
