HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Romantic aspects are high at this time for single Lambs looking for love. Warm and fuzzy feelings also are at enhanced levels for Rams and Ewes in paired relationships. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) This week favors what Taureans dote on -namely, love and money. Look for more meaningful relationships for both singles and pairs, as well as an improved financial outlook. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) All lingering shreds of that recent bout with boredom are dissipated as you eagerly accept a challenging offer. Your positive mood persuades others to join you in this venture. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) You might need validation for a possible solution to a situation involving someone close to you. Consider asking a trusted friend or relative to help you with this problem. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) Investigate carefully before agreeing to assist a friend or colleague with a personal problem. There might be hidden factors that could emerge later that will create problems for you. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Your decision to work with an associate rather than go it alone, as you first proposed, brings an unexpected bonus. Be careful not to be judgmental. Allow for free and open discussion. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A loved one’s health problem could, once again, make demands on your time and attention. But this time, make some demands of your own, and insist that others pitch in and help. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) This is a good time for the traditionally staid Scorpion to plan adjustments in your day-to-day schedules. Be more flexible and allow for more impromptu, off-the-cuff actions. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Avoid creating unnecessary fuss over a situation you don’t approve of. If it’s going to work, it will do so despite your objections. If it fails, it will do so without a push from you. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Working with a trusted colleague could open your mind to exploring some considerations you previously dismissed out of hand. The weekend brings news from a loved one. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) Resolving a recent problem leaves you in a good position to strengthen your influence on how things get done. But continue to encourage ideas and suggestions from others. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A new friend suggests an interesting opportunity. But check it out before you snap at it. It might be a good deal for some people, but it might not work in helping you reach your goals. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a way of helping people solve their problems, making you a most-respected counselor and trusted friend. (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

line behind someone with at least fifty items, that they may be in as just a big hurry as you are, if not more. I promise, that only takes a second or two. And leave your self-centered attitude at the door, for everyone else's sake. Just wondering why, you feel your time is more valuable than the other people who are waiting their turn patiently in a checkout line? I've worked retail for 30+ years and have It drives me absolutely NUTS seen plenty of rude and that you believe you are entitled entitled people who feel they to skip everyone else who has are more important than the been waiting in line as long, if rest. I have also been the not longer than you. Just because person in line with one or two you have "only an item or two" items behind a cart full. If doesn't give you the right to someone offers to let me ahead, bypass everyone else. Please I'm grateful but I certainly consider this next time you’re in

Thank you for Fargo Road Display! To the family on Fargo Road for the spectacular Christmas light display. We took our granddaughter last weekend and had so much fun. We are looking forward to next year. Hope to make this a new tradition. We loved the music, too. Thank you! A Batavia family Thank You Again, Avon Wesleyan Church! For sharing your time and talent with the community. Your living Nativity hayride was truly uplifting. The cooperation of the many volunteers was obvious in providing a well-organized, smoothly run experience for the many in attendance. The family picture, hot chocolate and cookies afterward were an unexpected bonus. Again, thank you so much for sharing.

Special thanks to the Totiakton Girl Scouts (and parents) who came caroling to our home in Honeoye Falls this past week. Really brightened up our day!! Keep it up. Thank you to those who are wishing us "MERRY CHRISTMAS." The "Happy Holiday" response is so insincere! Please don't be afraid of saying it. I am so tremendously grateful for the generous gift I received through the many fundraisers that the Avon High School Student Council put on in my name while I was going through chemotherapy through the first few months of the school year. I am overwhelmed with gratitude and I could never thank you all enough. I am so fortunate to work in a

don't get all huffy if someone does not. We all have things to do, places to be, jobs to get to and families to take care of, and our time is just as important as yours. You clearly know your area store is understaffed at check out, so, if you are incapable of being patient or don't have the time to wait your turn, save yourself the obvious hardship and shop at a less busy time. Every driver could use a refresher course in the rules of the road now and then, and your little sarcastic list was amusing until I read number eight. I disagree. Using your middle finger is never appropriate. It is cruel and hurtful. One young man found out too late how dangerous it was to flip someone

off in traffic. The insulted driver jumped out at the next red light and shot a bullet through the young man's head. You certainly sound proud of your ability to judge the rest of the driving world from your imaginary throne, but you fail to recognize that all human beings are battling some kind of crisis which may alter their driving skills from time to time. Learn to be humble and patient and maybe someday your opinion will actually sound intelligent. Post office moved drop box to steps of building. Makes mailing a letter very inconvenient. Rather than driving past the box, a person must park and get out of the car. Why was it moved?

community that cares so much, and I am overjoyed to be back at work with all the amazing students, faculty and staff. Thank you. There is a Secret Santa in Batavia, NY! I was having a rough time shopping because of a needed knee replacement and must use a cane. I hobbled into Dollar Tree, did my shopping, and loaded the car. I got in and drove about a mile and noticed an envelope stuck under my windshield wiper! I pulled over and got it off the windshield. I was thinking, "what the heck?" On the envelope was written Season's Greetings. Inside was a $5 bill! At that very moment the song came on, "It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year," then the sun came out, and then I cried tears of happiness. Little

did this Secret Santa know we had to bury my mother Christmas week and she is truly missed on Christmas. You really made my day! I will spread the joy further!

Your 6 ways to make bathrooms a safer place Homes should be safe havens. But each year injuries in and around the home contribute to millions of medical visits and many fatalities each year. Although anywhere in a home can be the scene of an accident, bathrooms tend to be the most dangerous room in the house. Slippery tile, the presence of water, stockpiled medications, and many sharp and hard edges in a small space pose several different hazards in the bathroom, particularly for young children and people age 65 and up. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says falls, which can result in serious injuries like hip fractures and head trauma, are the cause of 80 percent of all bathroom accidents. Many bathroom accidents are preventable with some easy modifications. 1. Reduce slippery surfaces. Wet tile is a recipe for slick conditions. Bath rugs with rubber backing can provide traction in the bathroom, as can nonslip mats placed on the floor of the bathtub or shower enclosure. Water-resistant flooring made from recycled rubber is another option. It is softer, less slippery and more forgiving than traditional tile flooring. 2. Install lever-style fixtures. Round knobs in the bathroom can be difficult to grasp, especially for the elderly or those with arthritis. Lever-style fixtures are easier to maneuver and can help alleviate scalding from not being able to adequately adjust the water temperature. 3. Utilize transfer benches and shower seats. A transfer bench can help reduce injuries that occur when trying to climb over a tub wall. Benches are placed outside of the tub and a person sits and then swings his legs over the ledge. Transfer benches also can be

used in conjunction with shower seats. This is a chair or bench that allows people to sit while they shower. 4. Discard old medications. Clean out the medicine cabinet of old or expired medications, including both prescription and over-the-counter drugs. This reduces the likelihood of medication confusion, and does not put potentially harmful pills and syrups into the hands of children. 5. Install grab bars. Properly installed grab bars around the shower and toilet area can provide leverage and stability. AARP says many injuries to seniors occur when they are attempting to sit or get up from the toilet. Grab bars or an elevated toilet seat can help. 6. Install motion-detecting lights. These lights turn on automatically upon detecting movement, making them beneficial for people who routinely visit the bathroom in the middle of the night. Adequate illumination also can help reduce fall risk. Bathroom safety should be made a priority. Various modifications can make bathrooms safer for people of all ages.

We Care About

Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy AVOIDING THE NIGHTLY GRIND When enamel on the molars develops wear spots, it may be due to “bruxism,” which is the involuntary grinding, gnashing, or clenching of teeth at night or during the day. Because bruxers are usually unaware that they are grinding their teeth, the dentist or hygienist is usually the first to spot the signs of tooth-grinding. Otherwise, those who grind their teeth may be alerted to the problem by symptoms such as sore jaw muscles, earaches, headaches, and disturbed sleep. It is important to pinpoint and treat the cause of bruxism, which can usually be traced to stress, malocclusion, or an issue with the temporomandibular joint. After that, the dentist can fabricate a custom-made mouth guard that helps prevents tooth damage.

Undereye circles and swelling can be alleviated when people get to the source of the problem. A combination of treating the sources and masking the issue can help. In severe cases, individuals should visit their dermatologists.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Rare Cardiomyopathy Ends Football Season --DEAR DR. ROACH: My 18-year-old grandson has just been informed that he has left ventricular noncompaction cardiomyopathy. He has been VERY active his whole life, playing football, baseball, basketball and soccer all through high school. He had no symptoms. This was found when getting a physical for college, where he was supposed to play football, and he has been told that is now out of the question. The doctors are saying it’s a very rare condition, and they want to put in a defibrillator ASAP. -- Anon. ANSWER: Left ventricular noncompaction is a cardiomyopathy (disease of the heart muscle) that is rarely diagnosed, but it probably has been under-recognized. It can run in families, so it’s recommended to examine relatives for the condition. It is diagnosed by echocardiogram, and some cases can be identified through genetic analysis. LVNC can lead to heart failure, arrhythmias and stroke. There is no specific treatment for LVNC, so people with the condition are treated for the manifestations of their disease. For people with heart failure, this means they are treated with the appropriate medications, which hopefully will prevent or at least slow down any damage to the heart. Management also can include an automated internal cardiac defibrillator (AICD) if the heart muscle is seriously weakened. People with LVNC and a history of serious arrhythmias should get an AICD as well. Since arrhythmias are very common in LVNC, AICDs may be used more frequently than with other causes of heart failure. Also, it is likely that your grandson’s doctor has more expertise than I in managing this condition, and certainly has more knowledge about his heart, so I would take the recommendation for AICD very seriously. It is strongly recommended he avoid competitive endurance sports and weightlifting. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m 40 and was diagnosed with sarcoidosis recently. It was found in my left eye when my eye doctor noticed inflammation. I also was having vertigo and face pain. It wasn’t until I had a PET scan and they biopsied a lymph node that I got the diagnosis. I am on steroids and recently started taking methotrexate. I’m having horrible side effects (mostly mouth sores and losing my hair), and my original symptoms are coming back. I feel like my doctors don’t know how to treat this disease. I have been told that it is rare in my area. Where can I learn more about this disease and see if there are better and more current treatments? -- J.O. ANSWER: Sarcoidosis is a multisystem disease with an unknown cause. It most often affects younger people and women of African descent. The most commonly affected organs are the eyes and lungs, and lymph nodes are commonly enlarged. The severity can range from quite mild to life-threatening. The diagnosis is confirmed by biopsy. Initial treatment usually consists of steroids, and methotrexate is often used. However, mouth sores and hair loss are both common complications. To find an expert with special expertise in treating sarcoidosis, I would start with your closest teaching hospital. Even though you haven’t told me about any lung disease, pulmonologists tend to have expertise in treatment of sarcoid, even when it affects organs other than the lungs. Most large hospitals have websites where you can search for doctors with expertise in a certain disease. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. “Great actions are not always true sons of great and mighty resolutions…”

~ Samuel Johnson This is the season for great and mighty resolutions. We analyze the nature of our lives and the direction they are taking, and decide how we could make improvements. We resolve to do better, either by eliminating some habit that is unworthy of us or by developing a practice that will enrich our lives. Johnson tells us that we also may be inspired to great action by circumstance rather than by resolution. When an opportunity arises, we may rise to the occasion with acts that do us credit and without the benefit of planning or high resolve. Arrangements made prior to need may include the assurance that adequate financing will be available. Our entire staff wishes all of our friends a happy, healthy and prosperous new year.

Old Fort Niagara and the Great Lakes Region Caledonia Library

Old Fort Niagara is a thirty-acre complex of stone buildings, redoubts, which are supporting “mini-forts,” and earthworks that sits along the south shore of Lake Ontario, just east of where the Niagara River enters the southwest corner of the lake. Well worth a visit, it is one of the most spectacular and important historic sites in North America. Fort Niagara was born of a time in history when the fur trade was a dominant economic force and when much of the travel throughout North America was accomplished by the use of birch or elm bark canoes along well-established water routes. Construction of the fort was begun by the French in 1725, its location chosen in order to control one of the most critical of these water routes. Travelers using this route could traverse the many lakes and streams from the Saint Lawrence River, or the Hudson River, all the way through the Great Lakes Region with only a few portages along the way. This route was very important to the then thriving fur trade as Indians and fur traders brought furs from the Great Lakes Region to processing warehouses in Montreal and Albany. By the 1750s, the French had erected a series of forts to the west of Montreal and all the way down the Mississippi River to New Orleans. These forts were not self-sufficient and needed to be constantly supplied. Fort Niagara served as the storage and distribution center to service these western forts. For over thirty years, Fort Niagara flourished under French control. Several events in 1754 led to the French and Indian War, a conflict between France and England, to determine which world power would control North America. Fort Niagara played a pivotal role in this war as a supply depot and military base for the French until late in the war. In July 1759, a large British force arrived in front of the fort under the command of Brigadier General John Prideaux. Prideaux’s forces numbered three thousand soldiers and about six hundred Iroquois warriors led by provincial officer Sir William Johnson. Prideaux began a siege of the fort on July 6, 1759. On July 29, 1759, the fort finally surrendered to the British following the resounding defeat of a French relief column by the Iroquois. In September 1760, the French surrendered all their territory in North America east of the Mississippi River to the

British, effectively ending the French and Indian War. Although the war had ended, Fort Niagara was to change hands several more times. It was captured by American forces, or Patriots, during the American Revolutionary War. After being briefly recaptured by the British during the War of 1812, American forces regained control of the fort in 1815, and it has remained in American hands ever since. Today, Old Fort Niagara serves the public as a wonderful example of an eighteenth-century fort. Visitors can walk the inner perimeter and view its various buildings, including the supply warehouse, barracks, officer’s quarters, two redoubts, a powder magazine and a bake house. Dominating all of these is the incredible threestory stone building known as the “Castle.” Inside the Castle are dining areas, kitchens, barracks, officer’s quarters, a chapel and the room in which fur trades were transacted. Visitors may also be interested in the demonstrations enacted by authentically dressed guides, including an hourly detailed demonstration of the legendary English military firearm called the “Brown Bess.” Finally, there is a very fine museum located in the building which also houses the ticket counter and gift shop. Old Fort Niagara is truly one of the most exciting historic sites in North America. Located about an hour and a half from the Rochester area, it can be reached by following the Thruway west to Fort Niagara State Park in Youngstown, NY. As with any historic site, learning as much one can about the fort’s history before one’s trip will help travelers experience the most enjoyment during their visit.
