EMPLOY SIMPLE FIRE PREVENTION MEASURES TO MAXIMIZE SAFETY Did you know that, according to the National Fire Protection Association, most people have a false sense of security regarding house fires, believing that they would have approximately six minutes to evacuate their home in the event of a fire? In reality, smoke and fire spread rapidly and can overcome occupants in less than three minutes. When a fire occurs, there’s no question that time is critical. The good news is there are several important steps you can take to maximize your escape time. With the following measures in place, you’ll create critical protection for what matters most -- your home and family. 1. Install smoke alarms. You should have one in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area, and on every level of the home, including the basement. For the best protection, make sure all smoke alarms are interconnected. When one sounds, they all sound. 2. Inspect and clean smoke alarms monthly. Replace batteries in spring and fall. To clean the alarm, open the cover and gently vacuum the interior. 3. Prepare and practice a fire escape plan. Draw a floor plan of your home, marking two ways out of every room - especially sleeping areas. Discuss the escape routes with every member of your household, and agree on a meeting place outside your home in case of emergency. Practice your escape plan at least twice a year. 4. Select building materials that provide passive fire protection. Passive fire protection is part of the core of the building and helps control fire by limiting its spread. One very effective form of passive fire protection is the installation of insulation. When adding or upgrading insulation, look for products made from naturally fireresistant, inorganic materials.

~ Voltaire We might at first assume that Voltaire was teasing when he suggests that one who answers every question was ignorant. Surely such a person must be extremely intelligent, perhaps the most intelligent person who ever lived! That is precisely Voltaire’s point. No one could possibly be so intelligent as to have the answer to every question. Only those so ignorant that they fail to understand their own limitations would try to answer every question that anyone might ask. Our understanding and compassion is the basis for the advice that we provide to families who must make decisions under stress. We do not take this responsibility lightly.

Livonia Third-Graders Make a Difference in the Lives of Homeless Animals
PENNY SAVER ONLINE POLL: New year resolutions are...? A really good idea! Not a good idea. Pointless Really useful I have no idea Poll Ends 1/9/17 Vote at: www.gvpennysaver.com Online Poll Question We’ll publish the results in next week’s Penny Saver.
Poll Results 12/27/16
What is your favorite Christmas comedy?
During the month of December, four third-graders put their passion for homeless animals and their plight to find their “fur-ever” homes to work by creating a campaign in conjunction with Livonia Central School to raise awareness of and bring in donations for Susie Q Dog ResQ and Hearthside Cats. Ultimately, they wanted to give pets a good Christmas even if they didn’t have homes. Sophie Beikirch, Gabby Peri, Aubrey Rivera and Molly Rowe researched several areas to donate to before coming up with Susie Q Dog ResQ and Hearthside Cats and then looked at the organizations’ websites to see what supplies the groups needed. After brainstorming their idea, they presented their plan to Principal Whittle who ultimately approved their idea. With the support of third-grade teacher Mrs. Willow Johnston, the girls worked hard on creating signs and making announcements to fellow students in the elementary school. Parents helped by posting the details of the drive on social media sites. Bins were put out in the school to accept donations of dog and cat food, cat litter, toys, blankets and towels, leashes and halters. They were able

to collect enough donations to fill the backs of two vehicles! Of course, without the support of their fellow students, teachers, administration and parents this would not have been possible. It was a true display of the meaning of small community support. The girls want everyone to know they can make a difference, too, by donating to these groups or even by adopting one of the many pets that are ready for adoption. Prevent stairway injuries Stairs are a necessity in many homes. While stairs serve a practical purpose, they also have the potential to be dangerous. According to the National Safety Council, more than one million injuries result each year from stairway falls. Staircase and stairway accidents constitute the second leading cause of accidental injury, second only to motor vehicle accidents. Each year, there are 12,000 stairway accident deaths. The Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation states that a large portion of Canadians who visit hospitals after a fall on or from stairs or steps in their homes are seniors (men and women age 65 years or older). However, many stairway falls can be prevented with some simple planning. · Install sturdy handrails. A common contributor to stairway falls is a failure to use handrails. Sturdy handrails can decrease fall rates. Even if a person slips, he or she may be able to prevent the fall by grabbing on to the handrails and regaining some of his or her balance. · Rely on highlighters or friction strips. According to a study titled, “Safety on stairs: Influence of a tread edge highlighter and its position,” by Richard J. Foster, fall risk may be reduced by using a highlighter positioned flush with the tread edge. This helps make stairs more visible, particularly for those with impaired vision. · Improve lighting on staircases. Failure to see steps may contribute to falls as well. Staircases should be well lit so that residents and guests know where to step. Subtle

foot-level lighting can be installed to make it easier for people who frequently use steps at night. · Use slip-resistant materials. Slip-resistant surface material acceptable for normal floors should work on stair treads. Loose rugs should not be placed at the top or bottom of the landing. Outdoors, rough finishes are recommended, particularly on stairs that are subject to getting wet. · Improve step geometry. If slips and falls frequently occur on a particular staircase, consider the relationship between the rise and the run, advises the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety. The National Building Code of Canada says that, within a staircase, treads should have a uniform run and tread depth that does not vary more than 0.5 to 1 cm. Steep steps with high risers and/or short treads can increase the risk of falls. · Clear away clutter. One easy way to prevent falls is to keep stairs free of clutter. This means removing shoes, toys and other belongings that may be left on stairs or landings. Many falls on stairs can be prevented by being mindful of certain risk factors.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 76-year-old woman with diabetes. My body, as I have been told, is bad with arthritis, for which I have been prescribed Celebrex. I have been taking it for a few months now, and am definitely moving around with a lot less pain. I recently watched a program that devoted the entire hour to Celebrex. It scared me out of my wits upon hearing the side effects of the medicine. I am asking your advice about whether to stop taking the Celebrex. -- S.A. ANSWER: All medicines have risks, and in order to decide whether you should keep taking the medicine, you need to really understand what the risks are and balance them against the benefits you feel in your ability to move around more easily. In the case of Celebrex, we have a pretty good idea of what the risks are. Like all related drugs (including ibuprofen and naproxen), celecoxib (Celebrex) can damage the kidneys, so it isn’t recommended for people with kidney disease. There also can be allergic reactions, which may be related to allergies to sulfa drugs. A few people have had vision changes. However, the most concerning risk is heart disease -- both heart attacks and heart failure. These risks definitely are increased among users of celecoxib. However, the absolute risk is small: There were about two extra cases of all heart events, including heart attack and heart failure, per thousand people taking 400 mg once daily, and six extra events in people taking 400 mg twice daily. Those risks probably are higher if you are at increased risk for heart disease (which you probably are, because of your diabetes), but it still means less than 1 percent of people per year. If the medicine isn’t helping, the risk certainly isn’t worth it. However, only you can decide if the risk is worth the benefit. Drug companies get into big trouble when they try to hide the risks of their medications, and honesty demands that we admit that all drugs and supplements have risks. Only you can make that decision, but I think it’s up to us as doctors to have a frank discussion, especially about medications intended to be taken long-term. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 72-year-old female. My doctor told me four years ago that I would need a Pap test only every two years, which I have done. She told me recently that I would not need to have any more. My tests have always been negative. I am concerned, as I would rather be proactive and know early if I had cancer. What is your opinion, and what does the American Cancer Society say? -- B.L.S. ANSWER: All of the leading organizations, including the American Cancer Society, have recommended stopping screening at age 65 for women with no history of cancer and who have had adequate screening, meaning three negative Pap smears (or two negative combination Pap and HPV tests) in the past 10 years, with at least one in the past five years. The risk for cancer in this specific group is very low. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. ATTACKING PLAQUE Because “plaque” is constantly growing in the mouth, it is important to brush and floss teeth to prevent it from building up on tooth surfaces and hardening into “tartar.” Plaque is a sticky bacteria-laden film that forms continuously around teeth and gums and can cause real problems if it is not removed within 24 hours. Bacteria in plaque do their damage when they convert sugars and starches from food into enameldissolving acid and toxins that inflame the gums and cause them to pull away from teeth. As a result, tooth root surfaces become exposed, leaving them susceptible to cavity formation. When plaque is allowed to accumulate, it hardens into tartar, which requires professional treatment to remove with specialized scraping instuments.
Did you know that regular visits to the dentist today can save you time and money in the future? By receiving routine dental cleanings and exams, you can help prevent cavities as well as more significant and costly dental problems down the road. To schedule an appointment, please call BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL at 585.343.4246. Our office is conveniently located at 6 Batavia City Centre. P.S. While plaque is nearly colorless, tartar (also known as “calculus”) is characterized by tooth discoloration and staining.

Here’s what happens when you shop local 1. More of your money will be kept in your local economy For every $100 you spend at locally owned businesses, $68 will stay in the community. 2. You embrace what makes your community unique You wouldn’t want your house to look like everyone else’s in the U.S. so why would you want your community to look that way? 3. You create local jobs Local businesses are better at creating higher-paying jobs for your neighbors. When you shop locally, you help create jobs for teachers, firemen, police officers, and many other essential professions. 4. You help the environment Buying from a locally owned business conserves energy and resources in the form of less fuel for transportation and less packaging. 5. You nurture community Local business owners know you, and you know them. Studies have shown that local businesses donate to community causes at more than twice the rate of chains. 6. You conserve your tax dollars Shopping in a local business district means less infrastructure, less maintenance, and more money available to beautify your community. Also, spending locally instead of online ensures that your sales taxes are reinvested where they belong— in your community!
7. You create more choice Locally owned businesses pick the items and products they sell based on what they know you like and want. Local businesses carry a wider array of unique products because they buy for their own individual markets. 8. You took advantage of their expertise You are their friends and neighbors, and locally owned businesses have a vested interest in knowing how to serve you. They’re passionate about what they do. Why not take advantage of it? 9. You invested in entrepreneurship Creativity and entrepreneurship are what the American economy is founded upon. Nurturing local business ensures a strong community. 10. You made your community a destination The more interesting and unique your community, the more we will attract new neighbors, visitors and guests. This benefits everyone!

A big Thank You to Gretchen, Tammy and all the other amazing moms who put on the annual Gift away at the Brockport Elks Lodge! Because of you, hundreds of children will have gifts for the holidays. A special thanks to everyone who donated! I want to thank the people who volunteer their time and resources for the many needed activities in our communities. Also, those who work diligently to cover end of the year vacations in any business, seasonal staff who often work long and sometimes thankless hours, and our emergency and road crews who work through the night to keep us safe, a big THANK YOU! For at least 20 years I have avoided going to the dentist because of fear. Needless to say I needed a lot of dental work done. I was having a lot of pain, and that’s when I found White

Spruce Dental. They were professional and caring, but most of all they did not criticize me for neglecting my teeth. I am no longer afraid of going to the dentist, which is huge for me! Dr. Nozik and his entire staff are wonderful. I would like to say a special thank you to Lisa and Zeypeh. I recommend this office all the time and will continue to do so. Suzanne
This year, I was diagnosed with a form of leukemia. I have encountered many wonderful service providers along this journey that have been so kind to me during this time. From receptionists, doctors, customer service people at my insurance company, to my hair stylist who helped me cut my hair since it was falling out. I have been treated better than I ever have in my life. While I really appreciate people’s caring nature and friendly ways, I challenge this mindset at the same time. I shouldn’t be treated any differently because I have a disease. We are all fighting a battle of some sort in our lives. Your battle may not be my battle, but it’s important whatever it may be. Being kind to others is a selfish act for me since my diagnosis. I challenge you to see if you feel the same.

about abuse of animals by psycho killers who progress to committing these crimes on humans.
How long does it take to repair the bridges? This work has been going on for months and still isn’t totally completed yet. It seems that there is a mini crew taking their time on this job. Traffic is backed up due to lane closures all along this route and sometimes no work is even taking place at all. It sure seems like this small crew of workers is taking their sweet time with little regard to the motorists trying to get to work or home after work. Everyone knows we can avoid offensive sites, but there is one thing I don’t understand. A site I used to enjoy has so many beautiful photos of flowers and my greatest love, animals. I was browsing baby animals and the most gruesome photos were included in this pin. It only took one to get me weeping and turning off my computer, although there were many more. Cruelty is not normal. We all know
To the person who vented in the last Penny Saver about having to spend $0.02 for an envelope and $0.46 for a stamp to pay your High School tax: If you are leaving NYS because of $0.48 it sounds like you have a first world problem. Also it seems that you are paying all of your bills with checks since you emphasized that you didn’t get a return envelope as you do with your other bills. Welcome to 2016 where we have this thing called the internet. You’re squawking about paying $0.48 and threatening about being the next one to leave NYS... Feel free to leave. Trust me... the money you pay for your high school taxes and $0.48 to pay the bill to send in your archaic check won’t be missed. Ciao! Can the village and water / sewer please fix the manhole covers? The last paving by the village added too much material without having the manholes covers raised. My car will be out of alignment or someone will swerve and hit oncoming traffic.

For busy professionals, compromised energy levels can be especially problematic, causing workers to fall behind and maybe even forcing them to work extra hours just to catch up. While infrequent days of low energy should not pose too great a threat, working professionals who routinely find their energy levels sagging by the end of the workday might want to take certain steps to boost their energy and ensure their productivity doesn’t wane.

I have the impression that cycling is no longer a game but rather an employment... a job. ~Bernard Hinault BE SAFE, HEALTHY AND HAPPY IN THE WORKPLACE WHILE PREGNANT Under the Family and Medical Leave Act, women in the United States are entitled to 12 weeks maternity leave. Women can choose to use a portion of that maternity leave even before their children are born if physical limitations are making it challenging for them to continue working. Women should put their health and the safety of their unborn children ahead of their responsibilities at work. In addition, women should not hesitate to speak with their employers about their comfort levels while pregnant. If an issue arises, speak with your boss, who deserves the benefit of the doubt. In some instances, breastfeeding also is protected by law at job sites or at the office. It is best for women to familiarize themselves with breastfeeding policies ahead of time so they can make the proper accommodations. Pregnant women should discuss with their doctors which work activities are permissable and which should be avoided at particular times in the pregnancy. Every effort should be made to avoid toxic substances, and pregnant women should not lift heavy items or engage in any potentially risky physical activity. For more information about workplace rights, visit the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission at www.eeoc.gov.
