I need a home Brooklyn

Through no fault of her own, was returned to Going to the Dogs Rescue after being adopted as a puppy. She’s a stunning 10-month-old blue brindle and white pit mix with green-gray eyes, and she has a lovely personality to match. She adores other dogs and plays nicely, but she’s probably a bit too intense for small dogs or anything but the most confident and dog-savvy cats. She’s sweet and affectionate with people, walks well on a leash, and has had some basic training.

Did you ever notice when you blow in a dog’s face he gets mad at you? But when you take him in a car he sticks his head out the window. ~Steve Bluestone

BE SMART WHEN SHOPPING ON YOUR SMARTPHONE Holiday shopping is an annual tradition for many people. But while it may be customary to exchange gifts with loved ones during the holiday season, how those gifts are purchased has changed dramatically over the last decade and a half. Thanks to advancements in technology, many holiday shoppers get their shopping done without ever setting foot in malls or shopping centers. And data indicates more and more shoppers are using their smartphones to do their holiday shopping. According to Nielsen Mobile Measurement, the number of mobile shoppers in December 2014 rose to 138.1 million users, an increase of nearly 14 million users from the same period just a year earlier. And mobile shoppers averaged nearly a full hour more shopping on the Web from their mobile phones in 2014 than in 2013. Convenience often drives shoppers’ decisions to use their mobile phones during the holiday season. But it’s important that shoppers not sacrifice security for the sake of convenience.

Impact of Running Away Is Chillier Than Winter

We make it easy for you to GO GREEN…

(NewsUSA) - Between 1.6 and 2.8 million youth run away each year in the U.S. The brutal cold of winter is only one of the threats that runaway youth will struggle to overcome. According to the National Runaway Switchboard (NRS) 2011 Runaway Youth Longitudinal Study, the long-term impact on their health, economic and legal outcomes as adults is another significant risk.

We will recycle your old phone books and magazines.

For adults who ran away from home as adolescents, the likelihood of having suicidal thoughts increases 51 percent, they are more than three times as likely to attempt suicide, the likelihood of them being a smoker is 2.4 times as high, they are 67 percent more likely to use marijuana, and they are 53 percent more likely to report having a sexually transmitted disease.

Simply bring them in to our Avon Office only during regular business hours. Our production team will shred and bundle this paper for trucking to the mill.

“Long-term consequences of youth running away should encourage parents, teachers and other adults to get involved earlier to prevent a runaway situation,” said Maureen Blaha, NRS executive director. “Hopefully, knowing the potential consequences also deters youth from running away.”

Running away doesn’t just affect health -- it also impacts the economy. As an adult, a former runaway’s annual income level is $8,823 lower on average and the likelihood of being a recipient of AFDC, public assistance or welfare is 76 percent higher. The negative effects of running away don’t stop there. Adults who ran away as adolescents are approximately 2.5 times more likely to be arrested, and they are 99 percent more likely to sell drugs. The key is runaway prevention, and NRS offers a few tips for parents to keep their child from running away: • Understand Your Child. Try to sympathize with what your kids are going through, and look at life from their point of view. • Discuss Feelings. Talk about what it feels like to be a parent, and encourage your children to talk about their feelings, too. When parents share their feelings, children know it’s safe to share theirs.

MOMENTS IN TIME • The History Channel • On Dec. 14, 1799, the first U.S. president, George Washington, dies at his Mount Vernon estate in Virginia. Two days earlier, he’d ridden out into freezing sleet and later refused to change out of his wet clothes. The next day he developed a severe respiratory infection.

CROWN PERFORMANCE When a tooth is missing or so damaged that it requires extensive repair, a dental crown is the restoration of choice. Also known as a “cap,” this type of cosmetic restoration has the longest life expectancy of all others. When cemented in place, a crown completely encapsulates the remaining portion of tooth and fully restores the damaged or missing tooth’s size, shape, function, and appearance. While gold alloy crowns last the longest, porcelainfused-to-metal crowns have a more natural appearance and are made to match the color of adjacent teeth. All porcelain or all-ceramic dental crowns provide the best natural color match, while pressed ceramic crowns have a hard inner core that replaces the metal liner used in the

all-ceramic crown-making process. At BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, we perform a variety of procedures, including crowns. We recommend regular check-ups, periodic cleanings, and x-rays when needed. We stress preventive dentistry for all members of the family. Located at 6 Batavia City Centre, we strive to teach you good oral hygiene. In the long run you will have better dental health. Please call 585.343.4246 to schedule an appointment. P.S. Pressed ceramic crowns are capped with porcelain, which provides the best natural color match. They are also more longlasting than an allporcelain crown.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m confused about the medical rule not to drink any alcohol while on antibiotics. After doing Internet research on reputable sites, I found, to my surprise, that the overwhelming medical opinion is that moderate alcohol use does not render most antibiotics ineffective. I do understand that alcohol should not be used with specific antibiotics, e.g. Flagyl, because of adverse physical reactions. I read that the warning not to mix alcohol with antibiotics stems from doctors fearing patients taking antibiotics to cure STDs would have lowered inhibitions and engage in unprotected sex. Could you please set the record straight for the public on this subject? -- K.L. ANSWER: I never learned the rule that alcohol shouldn’t be taken while on antibiotics, with the exception of metronidazole (Flagyl), the combination of which causes extremely unpleasant nausea and vomiting, headache, shortness of breath and other symptoms. This reaction can happen to a lesser extent with sulfamethoxazole (a component of Bactrim or Septra) as well as other, less commonly used antibiotics such as tinidazole and some cephalosporins. The antituberculosis drug isoniazid can cause liver damage in combination with excess alcohol. In general, if you are sick enough to need antibiotics, it is prudent to avoid alcohol, and certainly to avoid excess alcohol. But alcohol does not render antibiotics ineffective. Preventing STDs is much better than treating them, since not all can be cured. Part of being sexually responsible is making good decisions. You are correct that people are more likely to make unwise decisions with even moderate amounts of alcohol. That’s true with or without antibiotics. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I suffered from a very painful case of plantar fasciitis for longer than a year when my husband and I (both in our 40s) discovered that we were expecting a baby. I was terrified over the prospect for several reasons, including the already painful state of my feet. It turned out that my plantar fasciitis was completely cured by the end of my pregnancy. Now, at 47, with a darling 3-year-old, I’m wondering if there is any way of preventing the condition from returning. My OB/ GYN guessed that perhaps the hormones that make a pregnant woman more “stretchy” are behind my cure. Do you have any ideas about this? -- B.R. ANSWER: Plantar fasciitis is an inflammation in the strong band of connective tissue that runs from the heel to the toes and supports the foot. The major symptom is pain with walking, especially with the first step of the day. Pregnant women are indeed more likely to suffer from plantar fasciitis. Most authorities feel it is the relatively fast weight gain of a normal pregnancy, but some blame the hormone relaxin, which loosens the pelvic and other ligaments. This can change your gait and cause abnormal stresses on the feet, causing plantar fasciitis. Your obstetrician is suggesting that relaxin is acting on your already-existing plantar fasciitis, which I haven’t heard of, but it is an interesting thought. For prevention, regular stretching of the calf muscles, wearing shoes with good support and maintaining a healthy weight can help prevent recurrence. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. WISDOM TEETH Wisdom teeth, also known as “third molars,” are the last teeth to develop and erupt into the mouth. Unfortunately, they are the most common teeth to be ‘impacted’ or unable to fully erupt between the ages of 15-20, but can be seen earlier or appear much later in life. Impacted teeth are not able to erupt through the gum tissue fully or at all. This can be due to many reasons, including lack of room for the teeth (jaw growth), malposition of teeth or pathology. Nearly everyone has at least 1 impacted wisdom tooth. Why are wisdom teeth removed? There are many reasons wisdom teeth require removal; These include pain, swelling, infection, orthodontic treatment, periodontal disease, cavities, shifting of teeth, age and pathology (such as cyst development). If not removed, impacted wisdom teeth could lead to damage of adjacent teeth or cause infection, which is a very common reason that they are removed. If they do erupt fully, they often are difficult to clean and maintain, have bacteria associated with them which can lead to systemic infection and illness that can affect the heart and make management of other illnesses such as diabetes more difficult. If the teeth remain impacted as people age, other pathology can develop, such as cysts and tumors. Management of these situations is often compromised by anatomy and other medical concerns. Pain-free does not mean problem-free or pathology-free. If the wisdom teeth erupt fully, are hygienic and without pathology, proper follow up is in order with periodic exam and x-rays. What is the best age to remove wisdom teeth? Studies have consistently shown that removing wisdom teeth in the teen years is by far easier for patients. This is due to bone being softer, roots not being fully developed, better healing process, and an essentially uncomplicated or benign medical history. Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons and Wisdom Teeth If you have been recommended to have your wisdom teeth removed, you will most likely be referred to an Oral Surgeon (OMS) for evaluation. OMS’s remove thousands of teeth, including wisdom teeth, every year. They perform hundreds of anesthetics for various reasons every year, have advanced training in surgical and anesthetic complications and employ a team that is certified in anesthetic care giving. There are various types of anesthetics that an OMS can administer in a very safe and controlled environment. Most often, as a result of their extensive training and experience, teeth removed by an OMS results in less pain, swelling, infection and other complications.

Selling Your Home? · Look to paint. One of the least expensive improvement materials, but one that has a significant impact, is paint. Neutral, modern colors can easily liven up any space. If you paint with low-VOC paint, you also can advertise an ecofriendly home, which is very desireable these days. · Add illumination to rooms. A dark home is a dreary home. Adding light can mean including more overhead and accent lighting. Under-cabinet task lighting is a nice touch. Inclusion of skylights and sun tubes can bring natural light into rooms that may not have south- or west-facing windows.

CHRISTMAS COOKIES MADE SIMPLE Use a cookie mix. Who says you have to toil and make cookies from scratch? It’s the thought that counts, and any number of creative recipes can begin by utilizing a premade baking mix. These mixes already have most of the dry cookie ingredients sifted together, including flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt, and sugar. All you have to do is add the wet ingredients and any extra embellishments to make the mix your own. If mixes are too much work, purchase refrigerated or frozen cookie dough. Include your own add-ins, such as nuts, white chocolate chips, bits of dried fruit, or crumbled candy canes, to give the premade dough a unique flavor.

Cooking for one or two Seniors face many changes as they move into their golden years. Downsizing living spaces and vehicles is common, as is implementing certain changes to improve quality of life. Many seniors also scale back in the kitchen, where some must make changes because of medical conditions. While it seems like reducing food portions would be easy, those used to prepping meals for a large family may find it difficult. The following tips can make meal preparation efficient and cost-effective. • Divide and store. Supermarkets are increasingly offering larger packages of food products as well as “family size” offerings to compete with warehouse clubs. Buying in bulk can help individuals save money, but it may not always be practical for people living alone or with just a spouse. If you must buy in bulk, invest in a food vacuum sealer or freezer storage bags. Immediately separate meats and poultry into smaller portions before storing them in the freezer. Otherwise, look for bulk items that are individually wrapped to maintain freshness. Many canned and jarred items can be covered and stored in the refrigerator after containers are opened. • Plan meals with similar ingredients. To reduce food waste, use leftovers to create casseroles or mix them in with new meals. Broiled or grilled chicken can be used to make soups, stir-fry dishes, fajitas, and sandwiches. The fewer ingredients you have to buy, the smaller the risk of spoilage.

• Cut recipes in half. Recipes can be cut down depending on how many mouths need to be fed. When baking, cutting back on proportions of ingredients can be challenging. Search online for recipe-scaling programs that can make the work easier. • Cook on the weekend. Use a weekend day to prepare food and package it into small containers in the refrigerator or freezer. Then the containers can be taken out as needed and heated quickly in the microwave for fast meals. • Organize a meal-sharing club. Get together with a few friends who also have empty nests and split cooking duties. If you’re accustomed to cooking larger portion sizes, do so and then spread the wealth with others in the group. Then sit back and relax when it is your opportunity to have meals delivered to you.

“Goodwill is earned by many acts; it can be lost by one…”

~ Duncan Stuart Goodwill is priceless. It can exist between individuals, such as neighbors and friends. A company needs the goodwill of those with whom the company does business. When goodwill exists, each party regards the other in a friendly way. Every action is assumed to be motivated by good intentions. Goodwill is built gradually by a long series of transactions in an atmosphere of trust and friendship. A single act which betrays a confidence or takes an unfair advantage can shatter a relationship which has been built slowly over a long period. We believe that a funeral ceremony should be a beautiful experience, helping the bereaved in their first step towards adjustment to their loss. Call us first.

STEPS INVOLVED WITH ESTATE PLANNING An aspect of estate planning concerns funeral arrangements. Many people prefer to make their own funeral and burial plans so that these heart-wrenching decisions do not fall on the shoulders of grieving family members. Funeral planning may include choosing a burial plot, selecting a casket, indicating cremation, and paying for everything in advance so there is no financial burden on surviving family members.

Here’s what happens when you shop local 1. More of your money will be kept in your local economy For every $100 you spend at locally owned businesses, $68 will stay in the community. 2. You embrace what makes your community unique You wouldn’t want your house to look like everyone else’s in the U.S. so why would you want your community to look that way? 3. You create local jobs Local businesses are better at creating higher-paying jobs for your neighbors. When you shop locally, you help create jobs for teachers, firemen, police officers, and many other essential professions. 4. You help the environment Buying from a locally owned business conserves energy and resources in the form of less fuel for transportation and less packaging. 5. You nurture community Local business owners know you, and you know them. Studies have shown that local businesses donate to community causes at more than twice the rate of chains. 6. You conserve your tax dollars Shopping in a local business district means less infrastructure, less maintenance, and more money available to beautify your community. Also, spending locally instead of online ensures that your sales taxes are reinvested where they belong— in your community!

7. You create more choice Locally owned businesses pick the items and products they sell based on what they know you like and want. Local businesses carry a wider array of unique products because they buy for their own individual markets. 8. You took advantage of their expertise You are their friends and neighbors, and locally owned businesses have a vested interest in knowing how to serve you. They’re passionate about what they do. Why not take advantage of it? 9. You invested in entrepreneurship Creativity and entrepreneurship are what the American economy is founded upon. Nurturing local business ensures a strong community. 10. You made your community a destination The more interesting and unique your community, the more we will attract new neighbors, visitors and guests. This benefits everyone!

Light Hill / Canandaigua Comfort Care Home opened nearly six months ago to care for our residents at their end-oflife. Prior to that, there were months of renovations at the hands of several extremely talented and skilled volunteer craftsmen. The home’s operation is only possible because of our incredible family of volunteers. They have come for different reasons from different backgrounds, willing to care for our residents with a caring heart. NOVEMBER is NATIONAL HOSPICE & PALLIATIVE CARE MONTH, the ideal time to express our deep gratitude for the love, care and compassion with which they fill our homes every day. In addition, there are many more who keep our place running just like any other home. Every day at Light

Hill is brighter because of our volunteers, the heart of our home.

From the man in the red truck and his dog Skipper: I’ve been taking my dog Skipper for rides in my truck for many years now. He looks forward to it and enjoys it! I’m sure it bothers many people, for he is barking all along the way. It was so encouraging and kind of the neighbors on Chick Rd. to write up a positive comment. Thank you for seeing the bright side of our story!

Wouldn’t it be nice at this time of THANKS GIVING…That we remind ourselves of how fortunate we are to have loving people and warm surroundings to our table of blessings. Perhaps instead of acrimonious debate, we could bring warm thoughts and good conversation to our table of gratitude. May it be so… Namaste… Randy Pawley

It was great to see the Homecoming Parade. As I have done for SO many years, I took a plastic bag with me. This was PARTIALLY to collect the candies and gifts thrown by the participants. But after the parade is over, it is ALWAYS the same ~ I backtrack and go along the route to the beginning of the parade picking up the wrappers left behind by the litterbugs. It would be SO nice if one year, I went along, and found NO WRAPPERS left behind. I am sure the residents along the route would agree! As for the candy that is missed, think about this: I am sure the residents along the route appreciate the ants that the missed candy brings. PLEASE look around to be sure you haven’t missed any candy! You can ALWAYS donate what you don’t want. PLEASE also look around to see if you can pick up wrappers!
