BELA

is a very loyal dog, more of a laid back dog who just loves to snuggle and be around you. She wouldn’t be considered high energy which is great. She is crate trained. Her biggest fault is that she is hard to photograph so you don’t get to see the pretty brindle markings in her coat. She really is a lovely girl who just needs a chance to live with a committed family.

Penny Saver Pet of the Week My name is Duncan and I found my parents when I was only 10 weeks old. They have shown me just how “cool” life can be when there is unconditional love. Besides lying in bed and snuggling with mom & dad, I love playing in the snow, so much that my mom and dad bought me my own coat and boots so I don’t get too cold playing outside…just don’t tell them I lost a boot! Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it as the “POW.” Featured pets will be entered in the Pet of the Year Contest and become eligible to win a gift. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. For return of photos, please include a selfaddressed, stamped envelope. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

NEW YEAR’S CELEBRATIONS ACROSS THE GLOBE Much of the world rings in the new year in grand fashion. Celebrations may include fireworks, concerts and, of course, champagne. But while there might be common elements to New Year’s celebrations regardless of geography, the parties can vary greatly depending on where celebrants happen to be.

“Great actions are not always true sons of great and mighty resolutions…”

~ Samuel Johnson This is the season for great and mighty resolutions. We analyze the nature of our lives and the direction they are taking, and decide how we could make improvements. We resolve to do better, either by eliminating some habit that is unworthy of us or by developing a practice that will enrich our lives. Johnson tells us that we also may be inspired to great action by circumstance rather than by resolution. When an opportunity arises, we may rise to the occasion with acts that do us credit and without the benefit of planning or high resolve. Arrangements made prior to need may include the assurance that adequate financing will be available. Our entire staff wishes all of our friends a happy, healthy and prosperous new year.

While life insurance seems like the kind of thing every person should have, that’s not necessarily the case. For example, single men and women with no dependents and no tax or debt concerns generally do not need life insurance. If you are single but have tax issues or a considerable amount of debt, then a life insurance policy can be used to pay those debts upon your death. Adults with dependents, such as a spouse and/or children, should consider purchasing life insurance, which can help your surviving dependents maintain their quality of life and pay their bills in the wake of your death.

HOW TO CONSERVE WATER AT HOME Conservation is an essential component of an eco-friendly lifestyle. Conserving the planet’s natural resources can have a profound impact on the planet, and conserving at home is a great way for men and women to get the ball rolling on their conservation efforts. One of the most effective ways to conserve at home is to reduce water consumption. Few people give much thought to how much water they consume at home, as water bills tend to be considerably lower than other utilities like energy and phone. But even if efforts to conserve water at home may not make a dramatic impact on monthly utility bills, many measures can go a long way toward preserving one of the planet’s most precious resources.

MOMENTS IN TIME • The History Channel • On Jan. 14, 1942, President Franklin Roosevelt issues Proclamation No. 2537, requiring aliens from World War II-enemy countries -- Italy, Germany and Japan -- to register with the Department of Justice. Under increasing pressure from California politicians and others, Roosevelt also signed an executive order to remove all Japanese Americans to internment camps.

FEELING SLEEP-DEPRIVED? Chronic sleep deprivation can put you at higher risk for chronic health problems such as high blood pressure, heart disease, and stroke. Oddly enough, the dentist is often the first person to diagnose a sleep disorder. In particular, “sleep apnea” is a condition that causes repeated breathing interruptions throughout the night. These breathing pauses can last anywhere from a few seconds to minutes, and may occur thirty or more times per hour. While snoring is the most common symptom of sleep apnea, toothgrinding (bruxism) is also a reliable indictator of sleep apnea. If the dentist finds evidence of tooth wear and/or receding gums, it may be an indication of nightly tooth grinding related to a potentially serious sleep problem. Chronic sleep deprivation can

also raise your risk of gum disease or making existing periodontal problems worse. Research suggests that it’s more damaging than either chronic stress or daily alcohol use. To schedule a consultation, please call BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL at 585.343.4246 or visit us at 6 Batavia City Centre. We believe that effective dental care comes when patients are provided with a comfortable, relaxing environment with compassionate dentists providing exceptional care. P.S. A small jaw, a tongue with scalloped edges, and redness in the throat (caused by excessive snoring) are indicators of bruxism and related problems.

DEAR DR. ROACH: Could you please explain the difference between irritable bowel syndrome and irritable bowel disease? What is the treatment for each? I saw in a health magazine that there is a blood test to determine which one someone may have. -- ES ANSWER: Although the two names are very similar, the conditions are very different. Irritable bowel syndrome is a common condition, more frequent in women than in men, of abdominal discomfort and bowel changes, such as diarrhea and/or constipation. It is managed by diet (such as the low-FODMAP diet I have recommended several times), stress management and sometimes medications. It can cause significant changes in one’s social life, in addition to pain and discomfort. IBS is a clinical diagnosis, and there is no blood test to confirm it. Primary-care doctors manage IBS, and severe cases may benefit from the care of a gastroenterologist. Irritable bowel disease -- of which there are two types: ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease -- is a potentially life-threatening condition of the GI tract. In ulcerative colitis, there is inflammation that’s limited to the colon, whereas in Crohn’s disease, the inflammation can be in any part of the GI tract, from the lip to the anus, though it is most frequent in the far end of the small bowel and the colon. IBD should be managed by a gastroenterologist, preferably one with special expertise in these diseases. IBD usually is diagnosed by colonoscopy or other endoscopy with biopsy. Many blood tests can be abnormal in IBD, but only the pathologist’s report is definitive. Most people with IBD will need medication treatment, although symptoms and therefore treatment may change dramatically across time. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 83 and recently began having sciatica pain down my right thigh. My doctor recommended using a hotwater bottle. Are there any painkillers I can use? Are there any other products I can use? -- G.L.B. ANSWER: The sciatic nerve is a very large nerve that runs down the back of the leg. When the nerve is pressed on in the back -from a herniated disk in the back or from spinal stenosis -- there can be intense pain that feels like it is coming from the back, or anywhere from the top of the thigh to the foot. Since other nerves besides the sciatic can be affected, the condition is called lumbar radiculopathy. A herniated disk is when the shock-absorbing material in between the vertebrae comes out into the space where the nerve root is, on its way out of the spinal column toward the leg. Spinal stenosis is a narrowing of the bony canal through which the nerve travels. In most cases, people get better within four to six weeks. Standard pain medications, such as acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen, can be helpful. If pain is severe and not responsive, there are other treatments, including a short course of steroids and narcotics, which should be given only during that initial period of pain. Pain that persists for a longer period of time, or pain with weakness, especially with progressive symptoms, needs expert evaluation. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. Your Assistive devices help people remain mobile Disabilities affect people from all walks of life. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that around 55 million Americans have a disability of some kind. Of these people, 33 million have a disability that makes it difficult for them to carry out some daily activities. Statistics Canada states that, as of 2012, 13.7 percent of the population age 15 years or older reported having a disability that could impact daily life. People with disabilities may need assistive devices to reclaim some measure of their independence. For example, millions of people rely on wheelchairs or walking aids to get around. These are called assistive technology and rehabilitative devices, which include tools, equipment or products that can help people with disabilities get around more easily. These devices may be as small as magnifying glasses for reading to as large as wheelchairs. The National Institutes of Health state that 2.2 million people in the U.S depend on wheelchairs for day-to-day tasks and mobility. More than six million use canes, walkers or crutches to assist with mobility. The following are some of the common types of mobility devices available for purchase. · Canes: Canes are handheld devices that provide a little extra stability or support to weakened limbs. Canes are easily transported and can assist those who need only a little help. · Standard walkers: Also known as medical walkers, standard walkers offer substantial support and must be lifted

SCOOTER/ WHEELCHAIR REPAIRS!!! Call me for an evaluation!! Depend on DuPont!!

to move. That requires upper body strength, which can be difficult for some to maintain on long trips. · Rolling walkers: Rolling walkers are similar to standard walkers. But rolling walkers have wheels, either on the front only or on both sets of legs. They are somewhat less stable than standard walkers. Rolling walkers with wheel-locking devices may offer stability when needed. Some rolling walkers are called “rollators.” · Wheelchairs: Standard wheelchairs must be powered by the person in the chair or by someone pushing it from behind. This can be difficult for people with minimal upper body strength. Mechanical wheelchairs are powered with a lever or button. Some people may opt for motorized scooters over bulkier wheelchairs when possible. Assistive devices can be highly effective, but only when they are used properly and safely. Assistive devices should be measured for each user. Many walkers are height-adjustable. The width of a device also is important. A walker or another device that is too wide can affect mobility or require modifications to be made around the home. Weight is another consideration. The device should be lightweight so it can be maneuvered, but also weigh enough to provide enough stability to keep users upright. Users should proceed slowly and favor their stronger sides when relying on canes or walkers. Devices should not be used to climb atop other items like step stools. Children should not be allowed to play with or ride on assistive devices. If there are safety belts or locks on any assistive technology, they should be put in place before use to prevent further injury.

MOMENTS IN TIME • The History Channel • On Jan. 12, 1995, Qubilah Shabazz, daughter of Malcolm X, is arrested conspiring to kill Louis Farrakhan, who believed was responsible for assassination of her father in 1965.

What a blessing it was to have the Classical Conversations group visit the Genesee County Nursing Home. The residents thoroughly enjoyed the caroling, cards and poinsettia pins. Thank you for spreading Christmas cheer! My car was stuck in a snow bank last night in absolute awful weather. Even though seeing right in front of you was difficult, two people stopped and made sure I was okay. When we live in a world where everyone has a cell phone, we often think not to stop – how much more are we going to be able to help this person when they have probably called someone and are getting help already? Well, I will think to stop next time because it was reassuring, especially since I was out on rural roads with nothing nearby. Thank you to all who stop and offer to help when they see someone stranded as well as those who tow out our cars and brave the storms to help others. You are all appreciated! Nicole Darrow, Holley To the Caring Residents and Businesses of Avon – Thank you for all the support you give to the Avon Food Pantry! A big thank you to Jennifer, who is now heading the operation, and to Chris for the work she has done. There are so many businesses and residents who give so much to help the ones less fortunate. I’ve lived in Avon for 78 years and have seen how caring the community is – what a blessing! Also, thank you Lions Club, for your gracious support. Thank you everyone! You know who you are! Merry Christmas & God Bless You All! Louie To Merri Mathes, Thank you for your dedication, caring, hard work and enthusiasm in making the Adventures 4-H Club AMAZING every year! The Palmer/Rusin Family!

I love this time of year. Laughs are less about being nervous and more about genuine joy. Hugs are given with a harder squeeze. Thanks are said with meaning and not just to be polite. Surprises are found hidden in candy-filled Christmas mugs. More hands are lent to those in need. Don’t stop, you kind & wonderful people, keep bringing happiness and encouragement. It’s contagious. ~Anonymous I want to thank the Good Samaritan who brushed all the snow off my truck this morning. It was a pleasant surprise after all the snow we had received the night before. Thank you again for your kindness! May you have the happiest of holidays and a blessed new year. A heartfelt thank you to the Livonia Ambulance, Livingston County EMS Medics, Noyes Memorial & Strong Hospital Emergency Departments along with the all the staff of the 6th floor 1200 unit at Strong Hospital for the care provided to our mother Diane Dillon on her recent stay. May you all have a blessed holiday season and Happy New Year 2017! Lynn, Ron & Jason Forrester A special thank you to everyone who helped put on the Christmas party at the Community Free Library in Holley on December 2nd. It was a special event and we love our library! What a wonderful blessing it is for the community!

Fairport ADEPT Program Donates to Foodlink By Christina Lewis Gursslin

Go Figure!

Even Exchange Tiger, Tiber

Students in the ADEPT program at Fairport High School show the three barrels of food they collected as part of a food drive to help support Foodlink, in December.

Students in Ms. McGrath’s and Mrs. Burgess’s ADEPT (Accessing and Developing Employment, Personal and Transitions skills) classes at Fairport High School (FHS) recently hosted a food drive for the Foodlink BackPack Program. As a result, the class was able to donate three full barrels of food and was awarded third place during the Tops Markets Food for Families Weigh-In Challenge this month to help support tens of thousands of children in the 10-county service area who receive free or reduced-price meals at school. “Our students were amazing as they created and displayed posters all over the school, were part of the morning announcements each day

publicizing the project and encouraging donations, along with collecting and graphing the food we collected,” said FHS Special Education Teacher Assistant Julie Vaisey. Vaisey said students will be visiting Foodlink in early 2017 to help assemble the backpacks in an effort for students to see the process from start to finish. Foodlink is a regional food hub and the Feeding America food bank serves 10 counties around the region. In the 2015-16 school year, the BackPack Program served more than 4,000 children and distributed nearly 45,000 bags of food.

LAST-MINUTE HOLIDAY SHOPPING TIPS Shop local. National chains and big box retailers are renowned for rolling out great deals during the holiday season, but such stores may have very limited or unimpressive inventory left by the time last-minute shoppers begin shopping. Local retailers are often incapable of slashing prices as significantly as their larger competitors, and that may mean they have more extensive inventories available throughout the holiday shopping season. In addition, shoppers who stick with local retailers won’t have to pay shipping costs to ensure items arrive on time.

Holiday shopping season typically begins the day after Thanksgiving and extends all the way to Christmas Eve. While that’s a considerable amount of time for shoppers to find gifts for everyone on their shopping list, many people will still find themselves putting holiday shopping off until the last minute. In certain ways, last-minute holiday shopping is easier than ever. Thanks to online retailers who can ship products overnight, men and women who delay their holiday shopping have more options at their disposal than they did before the arrival of the Internet. And unlike the days of yore when the best deals were largely exclusive to Black Friday, some shoppers find that competition between online retailers and traditional brick-and-mortar stores is so great that deals can be found regardless of when they begin shopping. But while waiting until the last minute to begin holiday shopping may not be as risky as it used to be, shoppers may still benefit by sticking to certain strategies so they can find the perfect gifts without breaking the bank.

DID YOU KNOW? Each January 1, people all over the world make resolutions for the new year. Many of the same resolutions pop up on popularity lists each year. According to a study by GoBankingRates, which in December of 2015 asked 5,000 people what their New Year’s Resolutions would be for 2016, the top resolutions included: • Enjoy life to the fullest. • Live a healthier lifestyle. • Lose weight. • Spend more time with family and friends. • Save more, spend less. A study by Thomas Cook UK, a United Kingdom-based travel company, indicated many people in Britain planned to cut back on social media as a top resolution as well. It should be interesting to see which resolutions play out upon the arrival of 2017.

Workloads may be hefty on both fronts, and the pursuit of a healthy balance between home and career may seem like an unattainable goal. Stress can build from feelings of being pulled in too many directions. According to Mental Health America, stress can compromise a person’s ability to concentrate, lead to feelings of irritability or depression, negatively affect personal relationships, and weaken immune systems, increasing a person’s susceptibility to a variety of ailments. Research even indicates chronic stress may double a person’s risk of having a heart attack. The desire to have a fulfilling career and a full life at home is a goal shared by millions of people across the globe. But it’s important that one’s pursuit of such goals not come at the expense of personal health. Finding the right balance between work and family requires some maneuvering and practice, but it can be achieved with planning, organization and communication.
