Featuring the experience and ingenuity of Porter Hunt, who comes to us from Wegmans Organic Farms, we produce the most flavorsome fruits and vegetables, including heirloom varieties, with our sustainable growing methods. This produce -- including garlic, potatoes, onions, squashes, peppers, tomatoes, broccoli, sweet potatoes, salad greens, melons and cucumbers – will be offered seasonally. We grow our produce and raise our livestock in small quantities, focusing on quality, flavor and sustainability. We use only organic seeds, fertilizers and pest control methods in our gardens which are hand-tended by the monks who live here. Our pigs and heritage turkeys are raised on a carefully selected non-GMO feed mixture as well as their pasture and woodlot foraging. Four Scottish Highland cattle are also joining our farm this year, and we will be offering shares of succulent, grass-fed beef in the future. This year’s pork shares are selling fast with only 5 of our 20 pigs still available. Our heritage turkeys, new this year, will be ready just in time for Thanksgiving and are sure to move just as quickly.

Penny Saver Pet of the Week Hi, my name is Mya Rose. I am a Toy Yorkiepoo who is active and fun loving. I love retrieving my toys and playing tug-a-war with my family. At only 7.5 lbs, I try to be fierce and brave to secure the premises, but will quickly roll over for a good belly rub. My favorite places to enjoy are being cuddled by my adopted friend, Naomi, in her wheelchair; laying beside my big, cockapoo brother, Reese; or curled up and snuggled beside my adopted mom or dad. By the way, I hate bows in my hair!
Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it as the “POW.” Featured pets will be entered in the Pet of the Year Contest & become eligible to win a gift. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. For return of photos, please include a selfaddressed, stamped envelope. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

WASHINGTON INSPIRED PRESIDENTS’ DAY Established in 1800, Presidents’ Day once went by a different name. Known as Washington’s Birthday, which is still the legal name of the holiday, this day was meant to celebrate the first President of the United States, George Washington, whose birthday was February 22. Congress declared that day a federal holiday more than 200 years ago, and eventually the holiday grew to become a celebration of President Abraham Lincoln, who was born on February 12, as well. The holiday is now a celebration of the lives and accomplishments of every U.S. president.

PRESIDENTS’ DAY On the third Monday in February, Americans stop to remember the contributions of the many great leaders who have served as President of the United States. Certain Presidents’ Day traditions have developed over the years, including an opportunity for shoppers to find great deals on a host of items. Originally established in 1885 to recognize President George Washington, the day we now know as Presidents’ Day was then known as Washington’s Birthday and was traditionally celebrated on February 22. The holiday became known as Presidents’ Day after it was moved to the third Monday in accordance with the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, which enabled the nation’s workers to enjoy more threeday weekends. In addition, the Uniform Monday Holiday Act served as a way to combine the celebration of Washington’s birthday and Abraham Lincoln’s birthday, which is February 12.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 63-year-old man. A visit to my urologist did not answer some questions I have. I was told by my regular doctor that aging is a factor in men losing leg hair. Is that true? I am losing pubic hair, and even hair up to the navel. Why is that? Years ago, I found that I had lost the hair between my legs. A medication I was prescribed (Lexapro/Celexa) had bad side effects for me. It caused sexual problems and the loss of perineum hair. Could there be a connection? It is funny that I have only slight chest hair reduction and little back hair loss. Maybe the urologist brushed me off, but it is important to me. I had been under a lot of stress during the summer. -- T.K. ANSWER: When I see leg hair being lost, the first thing I worry about is the circulation in the legs. This can be an early sign of peripheral vascular disease, which is important to recognize because it is treatable and also predicts greater risk of heart attack and stroke. If you have any risk factors for vascular disease, I would talk to your doctor about getting this tested, which is easy and noninvasive. However, the loss of pubic hair makes me concerned about a drop in testosterone. This can cause sexual troubles as well, but it sounds like your sexual issues were related to the medication, which is not uncommon with both Lexapro and Celexa. That’s a simple blood test. Severe stress can rarely cause loss of all body hair, alopecia universalis, but that is really ALL hair, including eyebrows and eyelashes, which is not what you have.
*** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am an 80-year-old female, and I bruise from the slightest tap on my skin. My skin is very thin. When you press too hard on my arm or leg, it hurts. I have seen vascular specialists, but I have been told it is because of my thin skin. I feel like I should live in a bubble. My doctor says the same thing as the specialists. Do you have any suggestions to make my veins stronger? I am taking vitamin C, as I read that this might help. -- J.C. ANSWER: Easy bruising is a common problem in the elderly, and although it sometimes is an indication of serious disease, most of the time it is benign. I begin to worry when I see bleeding from the gums or nose, with multiple large bruises with no trauma, or in people with a family history of bleeding. Some simple laboratory tests can help decide whether this is likely a sign of internal disease. In the majority of cases, with none of the worry signs above, people can be reassured. Vitamin C and vitamin K deficiency can cause easy bruising, so foods high in these nutrients or a supplement can be tried. I recommend getting these through food rather than supplements, if possible. A few years ago, a study showed that a bioflavonoid supplement helped with easy bruising, and most pharmacies and health-food stores carry bioflavonoid supplements if diet is inadequate. Many fruits and vegetables are high in these compounds, especially citrus fruits, legumes, hot peppers and onions. These certainly can’t hurt, and may help. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. We Care About
Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy PALE BY COMPARISON When gums are healthy, they should be a relatively consistent shade of pink. While there may be variations (slightly lighter around the teeth and darker around the sides of the mouth), gums that become pale should be brought to the attention of the dentist. In many cases, pale gums are related to “anemia” (when the body is not getting sufficient oxygen-rich blood). Anemia can result from a lack of iron, folate, or vitamin B-12, or a medical condition. Pale gums may also arise from oral “leukoplakia,” which can cause uniform, thin, white patches to develop on the gums. In most cases, leukoplakia patches are harmless; however, they can transform and become cancerous. The dentist can help with a diagnosis. At BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, one of our fundamental
philosophies is teaching our patients the importance of taking charge of their dental health and doing what is necessary to prevent, arrest, or control their own dental conditions. We work together as a team with our patients to achieve the long-term benefits that quality dentistry affords. From sound advice about healthy gums and periodontal care to routine well visits to major dental reconstructions, we’ve got your dental needs covered. Our office is located at 6 Batavia City Centre. You can reach us at 585.343.4246. We accept most insurances. P.S. Pale gums can be caused by “lichen planus,” which is a film of web-like, slightly raised white threads that develop throughout the gums’ mucous membranes.

CROSSWORD
Protecting Your Vision From Diabetes (NAPSI)—Diabetes kills more Americans each year than AIDS and breast cancer combined—and can cause serious problems throughout the body. According to the National Eye Institute, eye health, for example, can become critically compromised. Around 30.3 million Americans, or 9.4 percent of the population, are living with diabetes, with about 1.5 million more being diagnosed every year. The longer someone has diabetes, the greater his or her chances are of developing diabetic retinopathy, or damage to the blood vessels in the retina. According to the National Eye Institute, between 40 and 45 percent of people diagnosed with diabetes have some degree of diabetic retinopathy. While being overweight and leading a sedentary lifestyle are certainly linked to diabetes, social and environmental factors such as poverty, stress, and lack of safe housing and access to a healthy diet can also compromise your health and ultimately contribute to the development of type 2 diabetes. According to America’s Health Insurance Plans, addressing these social determinants of health has become a top priority for Medicaid programs. “We encourage our members with diabetes to have regular eye exams to rule out complications,” said Dr. Andrea Gelzer, senior vice president of medical affairs at AmeriHealth Caritas, a national leader in Medicaid managed care and other health care solutions for those most in need. “We educate our members so they understand that living a healthy lifestyle, controlling their blood sugar and having regular eye exams can help save their vision.” Simple steps can help mitigate the effects of diabetes and may potentially delay complications from diabetic eye disease, including controlling your blood sugar and blood pressure, monitoring your cholesterol, seeing your doctor regularly, and having a dilated eye exam at least once per year—or more if recommended by your eye care professional. AmeriHealth Caritas is part of the Independence Health Group in partnership with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and one of the nation’s leaders in health care solutions for those most in need. The Genesee County YWCA: Overcoming Crisis; Embracing Change By Amanda Dudek
was all over the local news. The YWCA of Genesee County was Ia tinsignifi trouble, and its doors were not expected to stay open. “There was cant amount of debt with no cash reserves, zero, not a penny. Everything had been depleted,” YWCA Executive Director Millie Tomidy-Pepper explained. “The mound of bills simply sat here. Payroll was due, but there wasn’t any money.” Millie Tomidy-Pepper, who took over as the Executive Director of the YWCA in Genesee County on February 5, 2018, describes the situation as dire and partially due to a delayed system of resources which requires billing for payment after services are rendered. “We do depend on a lot of grant funding, which is always 3 months in arrears,” explained Tomidy-Pepper. “We have to voucher for it. So, you could be looking at up to 4 months to receive the money necessary for agency expenses including payroll.” By the time Tomidy-Pepper came onboard, there was no credit and no more endowment. “There was nowhere to go,” stated Tomidy-Pepper. “The phone calls kept coming in, demanding money, and the Board decided they had to close their doors.” It was in this darkest hour that a generous community member came forward and donated enough money to keep the YWCA afloat for a few months so that the Board could evaluate This is just the beginning. The YWCA started support groups and its programs and figure out how to continue to serve its community. educational groups. It started an 8-week, Teen Support group and an 8-week “We had to evaluate the inflow of money with the outflow of Empowering Women group, which are concluding this month. The YWCA services,” explained Tomidy-Pepper. “We evaluated all the programs, will begin its second round of classes and groups in March, including a 4-week Adult Self-Esteem class, a 6-week Parenting After Violence class and we cut the ones and a Help Restoring Hope group. “We are re-establishing ourselves in the that were losing money community while staying true to our roots,” explains Tomidy-Pepper. “We and were not viable. We are the oldest women’s organization in the world and the first women’s determined what services organization in Genesee County. In fact, we are celebrating our branch’s we offered that were 110th anniversary in 2020 and we are already planning for the celebration.” unique to the YWCA. Our domestic violence program, including our safe house, was one such program. Another was our program at the courts and our children’s center, which provides free daycare. Another was My Sister’s Closet which supports the domestic violence program by providing clothing for women and their children.” Tomidy-Pepper said that YWCA kept these programs under its own umbrella. However, she explained that the YWCA was not willing to simply abandon their other programs. “We looked to see what businesses were in place to take over our other programs. Our after-school Adventure Program, which provided after school care in 8 school districts was taken over by Healthy Kids. We transitioned CACFP, which was a food reimbursement program for daycare providers, to Healthy Kids, also, and our Care and Crisis hotline for mental health was assumed by Niagara County.” Tomidy-Pepper explained that the YWCA was especially concerned that the daycare and after-school care programs not suffer, see any cost increases, cut staff salaries or lose any staff. Thankfully, the transitions were seamless.
When describing the Genesee County YWCA’s vision for the future, Tomidy-Pepper draws inspiration from the past. “We have always been a social justice organization,” she said. “Our history shows how hard women worked to get organizations like ours going. The YWCA mission — eliminate racism and empower women — remains our vision today.” Tomidy-Pepper explained that when the YWCA is asked why racism comes first in its mission statement, she replies, “If any woman is discriminated against, then none of us are empowered.” Tomidy-Pepper also stated that the YWCA recognizes that women’s needs are different than they were when it was formed 110 years ago, and meeting those 21st century needs will be part of its strategic planning process moving forward.
Already in 2019, the YWCA participated in the January 19th Women’s March in Batavia and plans to hold a Stand Against Racism event in April. “In recognition of our 110-year Anniversary we will be offering a commemorative calendar highlighting the YWCA of Genesee County throughout the decades as well as ceramic purse banks in honor of Susan B. Anthony who is quoted as saying, “Every women deserves a purse of her own,” added Lucille DiSanto, Secretary and Fundraising Chair of the YWCA. “We will also host our YWCA Spring Fest on June 9th which will include tons of family-friendly fun. There will be over 130 vendors, 10 food trucks, face painting, bounce houses and much more.” With its struggles behind and a promising year ahead, both DiSanto and TomidyWith fiscal stability restored, it was time to plan for the present. Pepper confidently state, “The YWCA of Genesee County is here to stay.” “We paid down smaller debts, negotiated and fundraised,” said TomidyHave something interesting you’d like to share with our readers? HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Try to say as little as possible about the work you’re doing through the end of the month. Then you can make your announcement and accept your welldeserved plaudits. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) You face a more difficult challenge than you expected. But with that strong Taurean determination, you should be able to deal with it successfully by week’s end. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Before you act on your “feelings” about that upcoming decision, it might be wise to do a little fact-checking first. You could be very much surprised by what you don’t find. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) A recent workplace success can open some doors that were previously closed to you. On a personal level, expect to receive some important news from a longtime friend and colleague. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) Put your wounded pride aside and do what you must to heal that misunderstanding before it takes a potentially irreversible turn and leaves you regretting the loss of a good friend. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) One way to kick a less-than-active social life into high gear or rebuild an outdated contacts list is to throw one of your well-organized get-togethers for friends and associates. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Getting out of an obligation you didn’t really want to take on can be tricky. An honest explanation of the circumstances can help. Next time, pay more attention to your usually keen instincts. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Use your Scorpion logic to push for a no-nonsense approach to a perplexing situation. This could help keep present and potential problems from creating more confusion. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A friend’s problem might take more time than you want to give. But staying with it once again proves the depth of your Sagittarian friendship and loyalty. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) The Sea Goat can benefit from an extra dose of self-confidence to unsettle your detractors, giving you the advantage of putting on a strong presentation of your position. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) You might want to ask a friend or relative for advice on an ongoing personal matter. But be careful not to give away information you might later wish you had kept secret. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Use the weekend for a creativity break to help restore your spiritual energy. Once that’s done, you’ll be back and more than ready to tackle whatever challenge you need to face. BORN THIS WEEK: You get great joy out of creating beautiful things and sharing them with others who appreciate them. (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

Snowy Thoughts By Rita Lambert In winter when the snowflakes fall and spread a blanket over all our feathered friends fly all around and find no food upon the ground. I’m sure they’re pleased with all the folk that know that hunger is no joke, those faithful ones that meet their needs with suet tied upon their trees and feeders filled with seedy treats. How do they thank them for these eats? The joy to see their colors bright eating away with such delight is all the thanks they really need for doing this most gracious deed.

To the person who vented about a medical scooter in the road: while the sidewalks may have been plowed, they are also very badly uneven. Cracks, whether from wear or roots can stop mobility equipment abruptly, sending the user over the handlebars.
Often, ramps to get onto and off the sidewalk also have tall lips. People on a fixed income, such as the disabled often are, may not be able to afford reflective vests and lights. Rather than demanding the disabled stay home, why don’t you contact the town for better maintenance and lighting for the sidewalks, and perhaps keep reflective items in your car to give to a disabled person who does not have them? To the person who stole my package the week before Christmas: I waited weeks for that package to arrive with gifts for my loved ones. Because of you I wasn’t prepared for my aunt’s
Christmas party. Karma will catch up with you! I work at a home for homeless veterans in a canal town. I have a 79-year-old veteran who walks up to 12 miles daily. That is not bad for a 79-yearold Vietnam veteran. A local lady walking her dog told this vet he couldn’t walk down her street, near her or even in her area. How could you be so arrogant and unwelcoming to a veteran in your community? This man not only served his country in a bad era but now is told that he is not welcome to walk down your street, as well. Who are you to tell him that? This man is healthy and loves your community, yet this is how you treat your fellow
neighbor? A Veteran? Thank God the community for the most part has been absolutely wonderful to our house because you left a poor impression on his and our staff ’s minds. Thank God the rest of the world isn’t as heartless. It’s so disconcerting to see Christmas trees on the side of the curb within walking distance of a local park where they recycle them for free. Please check your town’s website. There is so little space left in the landfills. My town uses the chips to put on their trails. Some will give you the mulch. At least take off the tinsel and lights so they don’t get put in the landfill with the trees.
Brighter Side Thank you, East Rochester PD! Sunday night, I had to go in to work by 8. I was outside by 6:15 knowing it would be outrageous out. I drive a little Mazda. I managed to bulldoze (in reverse) to the street. However since the sidewalks had been plowed, I got stuck on the packed snow. I saw a police officer exit his SUV and approach. Without hesitation, this man (also without gloves) helped me free my car by giving it a push back in my driveway then taking his steel shovel to break up the packed ice and snow. He had no cause to stop and help but chose to, and it saved me an incredible struggle. Thank you, Officer Bryant Ferry! R.C.
Our Pittsford Seniors program participants collected 100 coats during Monroe County’s “Coats for Seniors” campaign this past December. The coats are sent to area shelters where they are distributed to those in need. Thanks to partnerships with several community groups and organizations - including our seniors! - the Coats for Seniors Campaign has collected and distributed over 10,000 coats during its 15-year history. Love thy neighbors: Many thanks to my “snow removal elves!” My driveway has been cleared every storm, thanks to my caring neighbors and
daughter. Much appreciation to Kati, Rod, Vicky, Steve & April. Their Luck Lady – Kitty It is hard enough to lose a pet. The event is made even more difficult when the decision as to whether or not to euthanize falls on the shoulders of the pet owner. Dr. Carrie DiCarlo at Perry Pet, along with all her staff, should be recognized for their sympathetic and respectful attitudes towards both their patients and their owners, especially at such an emotional time of loss. My family also received written condolences from Roger’s Hair Salon, where another wonderful group of compassionate people work. We are blessed to have such truly caring and compassionate
people in our community. So many people go to work and just “go through the motions.” The people at these two local businesses put their hearts into their work; it is truly appreciated!

All programs are sponsored by the Friends of the Chili Public Library.
We are greatly touched by the outpouring support and the overwhelming number of donations. We would like to thank everyone who shared stories and memories of Liz throughout the week. For all our family and friends, almost too many to count, we are so thankful for all those who quickly came to help with meals and to spend time together. For everyone in the Avon Central School community, thank you for the heartfelt notes from both the students and staff and for all those who attended the funeral on Friday. The impact Liz had on the Avon community is evident with all of you. Thank you to the first responders and medical professionals at United Memorial Medical Center. Thank you to the Falcone Funeral Home for the arrangements and accommodating all who came to calling hours on Thursday night.
With each passing day, we are reminded of Liz’s strong presence within this community and are amazed by how loved she was.
Thank you and God bless you.

All interested landowners MUST ATTEND an information workshop prior to submitting an application. Submission deadline is March 29, 2019. PDR Workshops: Thursday, February 28: 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. Saturday, March 9: 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 pm Both workshops will be held in Room 205/208 of the Livingston County Government Center, 6 Court Street, Geneseo. “He that plants trees loves others besides himself…”
~ English Proverb
Lots of us have an affinity for the soil. Whether or not we have a “green thumb,” we enjoy working with growing things. We plant flowers that we expect to later delight us with their lovely, fragrant blossoms. We may plant a vegetable garden and hope to enjoy some truly fresh (and quite inexpensive) vegetables for our table. The one who plants trees is thinking less of his own enjoyment than of his children or others who will benefit from the shade or the fruit from the trees for many years. Remembering those who planted the trees we enjoy today, let’s plant trees now for tomorrow. Whatever a family chooses to pay for a funeral, we always render the finest, most considerate service possible.
