There is no one who hasn’t experienced misfortune… illness, the loss of a loved one, businness reverses… yet we see some people who have overcome their sorrows and others whose sorrows have overcome them. There is no way to shield ourselves from unhappiness and disappointments, life is full of them. We must try to develop the ability to accept them with a sense of proportion. So, let us not pray for uninterrupted good fortune, but rather ask for the strength to meet whatever the day brings. Some people are unaware that complete funeral arrangements, including financing, can be made well in advance of need. Our plan provides peace of mind and will spare loved ones the task of making painful decisions under stress. Ask us for details.

Thank you, Jimmy Johnson at Johnson’s Automotive in Batavia. You are a fair and honest mechanic I can always trust. Bonnie Marrocco

To the party who left 2 bags of garbage at the end of my driveway on 1/15/19: You left it after the collector stopped at my house. I went through your garbage: Cheesecake factory, McDonald’s, Subway, Marketplace food take out, canned cat food, Powerade bottles, purple colored Friendly’s ice cream, dryer lint. And you left a piece of paper that identifies who you are. If you are having difficulty with the disposal of your garbage, there are resources to help you. Assuming you can just leave your trash at a random house, however, is not the answer. Please ask for help if you are in need. It is all around you, but you have to ask. If you can’t stand the natural odors of farm country - why build, buy or rent a home next to it? GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

The Avon Braves Girls Basketball team would like to thank the Avon community for all their support during the team’s recent sectional title run. We’d also like to thank all our fans along with our sponsors, Salvatore’s and Lattimore Physical Therapy, for helping us to raise $900 for the Avon Food Pantry.

HOBBIES FOR DIFFERENT PERSONALITY TYPES Book lovers also can channel their passions for the written word into a rewarding hobby. While reading might not seem like the most social activity, readers who want to use their love of books to grow their social networks can start a book club. People of all ages and backgrounds love to read, so starting a book club can be a great way to meet an array of people. Readers also can call their local libraries or schools to ask about reading programs for children. Volunteer to read to youngsters, helping the next generation discover the wonders of reading.

Notre Dame Student Plans Benefit for Autism Nature Trail Story Courtesy of Notre Dame High School sensory perception and integration through spatial orientation, pattern recognition, balance, and materials manipulation. Guides for increasing communication skills, language development, and body movement utilizing the Trail are in development by researchers. Staffing and programming will be coordinated by Camp Puzzle Peace/Family Autism Center of Rochester. Faith’s fundraiser on Saturday, March 23 in the Notre Dame High School gym features a family-friendly cornhole tournament, raffles and auctions. Local radio personality and Notre Dame alumnus Jimi Jamm has volunteered his time as MC for the event which runs from 4:00-6:30 PM.

Senior Faith Falkowski and Principal Wade Bianco kicked off Inclusion Month at Notre Dame High School in Batavia. (Photo used with permission)

Faith Falkowski of Batavia first heard about a nature trail designed for persons with autism spectrum disorder when she was a freshman at Notre Dame High School. Now, as a senior who is headed to D’Youville College in the fall to study occupational therapy, she has become a strong advocate for the planned Autism Nature Trail (The ANT) at Letchworth State Park - so strong that she is spearheading a fundraiser for the project at her school. The event has sparked a month-long set of activities at Notre Dame to promote inclusion in the school and community-at-large. Students will be encouraged to sign an inclusion pledge to accept people of all abilities, respect others and act with kindness and compassion, and include people with special needs in every aspect of their lives. Living with a family member who has special needs can limit the entire family when it comes to recreation and social activities. Most services are offered in urban centers, putting rural residents at an even greater disadvantage. “To have this first-of-its-kind trail so close to where I live and go to school is really exciting,” says Faith. The ANT is a 1.25 mile loop to be located in the state park voted #1 in the country in 2015. While this experience in nature has been designed (Photo used with permission) by experts specifically for those with autism and related disorders, it will be a popular destination for all who want to take advantage of a stunning natural environment in a safe and inclusive setting.

Faith and members of her family are sewing dozens of bean bags for the event with duck cloth donated by JoAnn Fabrics in Batavia and feed corn donated by Tractor Supply in Warsaw. Students in Jared Radesi and Scott Henahan’s Building Trades program at Genesee Valley Educational Partnership in Batavia are designing and building cornhole boards that can be used by other ANT volunteers for future fundraising tournaments. All the materials needed for the boards were donated by the Batavia Home Depot. Winners in each of 3 age brackets will receive trophies, compliments of Joe’s Pro Shop in Batavia. Raffle items come from far and wide and include gift cards for local goods and services, themed baskets, oneof-a-kind wood and metal items, and highly collectible pieces, such as a photo and ball cap autographed by actor Joe Mantegna (who is honorary chair for The ANT) and a celebrity package from the TV show “Modern Family.” The appeal of being involved with The ANT, according to Faith, is the ability to tie her future career interest to her current role as a student, to demonstrate that she and her Notre Dame classmates want all individuals to be able to access the jewel that is Letchworth State Park, and to help build a unique experience in nature that will be available for generations of special needs visitors. For more information about the event at Notre Dame on March 23, call (585) 201-8066 or email letchworthsensorytrail@gmail.com. GENERAL CONTRACTING SALOME’S STARS ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Putting yourself in someone else’s shoes isn’t easy for you. But if you do it, you’ll gain a better perspective of what you need to do to achieve your goals. Be open to new ideas. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) There are still some problems you might have to deal with before moving on to your next project. It’s a good idea to accept help from those who share your objectives. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) It’s time to recognize the difference between those who are truly concerned for you and those who simply plan to use your good nature to their advantage. New ideas become increasingly attractive. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Depending on a promise made becoming a promise kept could be more than a mite unwise at this time. It’s best to proceed on your own rather than wait for aid that might never arrive. LEO (July 23 to August 22) A recently revitalized relationship might not be quite what the Big Cat expected. But give yourself more time to deal with the changes. A little flexibility can go a long way. Good luck. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A major change could prompt more adjustments. Some of them might be difficult to deal with at first. But hang in there, and before you know it, you’ll be coasting to your next goal. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Your sense of justice prompts you to speak out against an unfair situation, even if you seem to be the only one who feels that way. But you soon learn that many others agree with you. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Creating a fuss is not usually your style. But that doesn’t mean you should tolerate an illmannered attitude. Speak up for yourself, and you’ll earn the respect of others. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) You might have a few loose ends to tie up before you can stamp your project as complete. But once that’s done, you might want to celebrate with someone special in your life. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Disappointment darkens the Goat’s mood. But close friends rally to pull you through with words of encouragement. Use their confidence in you to rebuild your own selfesteem. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) An upcoming decision might be more difficult with inaccurate information. Best to recheck the data you have at hand right now to be sure it won’t mislead you later. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) An offer you previously turned down might no longer be available. But if you do some checking around, you could find something else that would suit you just fine. BORN THIS WEEK: You believe in helping those who cannot help themselves. Although it embarrasses you, the fact is, people like you and tell you so.

PLANT A TREE FOR SUCCESSFUL GROWTH Now it is time to amend the soil. It’s not enough to enrich only the soil in the hole where the tree will be placed. Move out into a circular area beyond where the roots will start so that roots can expand and properly anchor the tree. The next method of success is to ensure that the tree has a large enough hole to contain the existing root ball and allow for roots to grow and expand. Better Homes and Gardens experts say to prepare a hole that is two to three times as wide as the root ball of the tree. Treat the root ball gently. If the roots are wrapped in burlap, remove the burlap or push it to the bottom of the hole. Backfill the hole with soil and check that the tree is straight. Stake the tree to help it stay upright and straight until the roots anchor it more effectively. A layer of mulch around the base of the tree can prevent weeds and reduce water loss. Water daily for several weeks until the roots have fanned out. It’s best to leave trees be for the first growing season, only removing broken or diseased limbs. Resist pruning and shaping until the tree has survived its first growing season.

DESIGN A GARDEN FOR ALL SENSES Aesthetic appeal is one of the most sought-after benefits of gardening. However, many homeowners put in so much effort planting for one particular season that they may not give thought to ensuring the garden looks vibrant no matter the time of year. Gardeners can research planting zones to find plants that will blossom at different times of the year so they can enjoy impressive, aesthetically appealing gardens year-round. Spring bulbs can bloom early on, while annual and perennial summer favorites will thrive under the summer sun. Beautyberry and caryopteris will fill out in the autumn, while holly or mahonia can look lovely in the winter.

HOME SERVICES

Save money and stay cool as temperatures rise Excessive energy bills can be a concern in spring and summer, just as much as they are in the winter. So how can you save money while keeping your home cool? The solution is simple: Top up your attic insulation. A poorly insulated attic is a primary source of energy loss, forcing your AC unit to work harder than necessary over the warmer months. Most attics are insulated, but oftentimes the amount of insulation present is inadequate - especially in older homes. Over time, insulation can settle and compact, allowing heat to escape through gaps. Topping it up is easy. Ideally, you want to aim for a depth of 16 inches of insulation for an overall R-value of 50. When existing insulation is present, simply level existing insulation to the top of the joist. Lay a fireand moisture-resistant batt insulation, like Roxul Comfortbatt, on top of joists, running perpendicular to the first layer. Ensure batts are butted against each other tightly. Fit batts closely to cross joists; cut batt if necessary (this can be done easily with a serrated blade or bread knife) and leave no space between layers. Don’t forget to insulate the attic hatch to the same level as the rest of the attic. Apply weather-stripping to the edge of the hatch to reduce air leakage. Keep in mind that only IC-rated electrical fixtures can have insulation placed with zero clearance. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and local building code to insulate around the chimney. When a house is insulated properly, energy savings can add up over time. Remember, insulation starts working the moment it is installed and can last for the life of the building.

If you think that the only way to exercise and burn calories involves gym equipment, think again. Yard work can be just as challenging as a thorough aerobics workout at a nearby fitness club. To reap the greatest benefits, gardeners should use as little motorized machinery as possible. Manual tools will get you moving and can burn a substantial amount of calories. Try to vary positions and alternate which hands you use to reduce strain and get an even workout. Fitness experts say that gardening can improve strength, increase endurance and assist with flexibility. According to a report in the UK publication The Telegraph, clearing a pond or weeding can burn some 300 calories in an hour. Forty-five minutes worth of gardening can burn as many calories as 30 minutes of aerobics.

We Care About

Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy GUM DISEASE’S EFFECT ON OVERALL HEALTH During the past few years, the admonishment to brush and floss twice daily has taken on added urgency since research has uncovered associations between gum disease and serious conditions including rheumatoid arthritis and cancer. The link between periodontal disease and systemic illness is particularly common among older adults. The CDC reports that 68 percent of Americans over age 65 have some form of gum disease but don’t realize it, a potentially deadly oversight. According to a recent study of 57,000 postmenopausal women ages 55 to 89 years, those with periodontal disease had a 17 percent higher risk of premature death than women with healthy gums. Those who had lost all their teeth had an added risk of cardiovascular disease. Acknowledging the inherent connection between oral health and a patient’s overall health, we will

use the many techniques available in today’s dentistry to diagnose, treat, restore, and promote total patient well-being. If we can help you maintain your healthy smile, either by answering questions or by providing comprehensive dental care, please call BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL at 585.343.4246. State-ofthe-art dentistry and a dedicated professional dental team make 6 Batavia City Centre the ideal place to achieve optimum oral health. P.S. “Gingivitis,”a mild form of gum disease, is characterized by inflamed, swollen gums that are prone to bleeding. Left untreated, it can advance to periodontitis, bone erosion, and tooth loss.

Stomach “Flu” Is Not Actually Flu

Well known & respected

Jeffrey A. Goldstein, M.D., F.A.C.G.

Office Open in Batavia Now seeing patients & doing procedures at:

---

190 Washington Ave., Batavia, NY

DEAR DR. ROACH: With the flu season coming on, would you please discuss the difference between what people call the “stomach flu” and what the flu really is? I have two friends who said they weren’t getting the flu shot anymore because despite having it, they got the flu. They each described several hours of throwing up, but feeling better the next day. I suggested that they probably had a gastrointestinal episode and not influenza, which is a respiratory disease. They insisted that they had the flu, and they’d always learned that the stomach flu is influenza and the flu shot is meant to prevent it. Since then I’ve spoken to two others who believe the same thing. -- G.C. ANSWER: You are right that there is much confusion about what influenza is. Influenza typically begins with sudden onset of fever, headache, fatigue and severe body and muscle aches. Influenza occurs about two days after exposure. There also often are symptoms of cough, sore throat and nasal discharge, just as there are with the common cold, but the sudden onset, fever (commonly 100 to 104 degrees) and muscle aches help distinguish cold from flu. Gastrointestinal symptoms -- such as nausea, vomiting and diarrhea -- are less common in influenza, and these symptoms in absence of the major manifestations listed above makes the diagnosis of flu very unlikely. In late fall through early spring, some diarrheal illnesses (mostly viral) are common, but you are correct that these are NOT influenza. The flu shot contains viral proteins, not live influenza, and it is incapable of causing the flu. Many people will have a sore arm and sometimes mild fever and body aches after a flu shot. This is just part of the body’s reaction, and it goes away by itself within 24 hours. There is a live influenza vaccine given by nasal spray, which also generally has mild side effects. This may be given to adults under 50. The flu shot is not perfect: You still can get the flu after receiving the shot. However, the flu shot is effective at reducing the most serious cases of flu, such as influenza pneumonia, which can be life-threatening or fatal.

Dr. Andrew M. Steinhilber is a board certified Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon with 6 years of surgical residency training and over 20 years of surgical practice. He has extensive training in extractions of all types, including wisdom teeth and Dental Implants.

recently had my gallbladder removed. What are the effects of not having this organ? -- I.T. ANSWER: The gallbladder stores bile and release it when necessary after a meal. Bile is made by the liver and is needed for proper digestion, especially of fats. After gallbladder removal, usually because of gallstones, the liver takes over the job by storing bile in bile ducts, and releasing it at the right time, under the influence of hormones, such as cholecystokinin. After surgery, most people have no problems with digestion, as their body gets used to the new status quo after a few weeks. Rarely, people who have had their gallbladder removed can develop postcholecystectomy syndrome, which manifests as upper abdominal pain. There are several possible causes. Discovering it requires expert evaluation, usually by the surgeon, and it often involves CT scans and a special kind of MRI (MRCP) to evaluate the biliary tract. Retained stones in the bile ducts, leakage of bile and strictures (narrowings) in the bile ducts are the most common causes of PCS. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Behavioral side effects Behavior also can be affected by stress, which may cause some people to abuse drugs or alcohol. Some may even turn to tobacco, either becoming a smoker or smoking more if they’re already smokers. Smoking has been linked to a host of negative physical side effects, including an increased risk of developing cancer. Angry outbursts, social withdrawal and overeating or undereating are some additional potential side effects of stress on the body.

Four Ways To Remain Mentally Sharp In Retirement

\(NAPS)—Many retirees share a fear of gradually losing their ability to think as clearly as they used to or remember simple information such as other people’s names. And while everyone has the occasional “senior moment,” medical research indicates that aging by itself is generally not a cause of cognitive decline. “Studies have shown that you can help prevent cognitive decline and reduce the risk of dementia with some basic good health habits,” according to Harvard Medical School’s Healthbeat newsletter. Here are four simple steps to keep your mind sharp at any age: 1. Exercise: It’s important to stay physically active. Simple routines such as taking exercise classes at your health club or taking walks in your neighborhood every day can do wonders for your mental health. Just get moving. “The cognitive benefits of exercise have been understood for so long,” notes the Center for Retirement Research at Boston College. 2. Serve: Research published by the American Psychological Association found that volunteering in later life “is associated with significant psychosocial, physical, cognitive and functional benefits for healthy older adults.” Science is now confirming what many have learned by experience: People often feel better after they have served others and enjoyed the time spent helping someone else. 3. Learn: Experts think that ongoing education and learning new things may help keep you mentally sharp simply by getting you in the habit of staying mentally active. Take a class from a senior center or community college, make it a habit to visit the library and pick up a new book each week. “Challenging your brain with mental exercise is believed to activate processes that help maintain individual brain cells and stimulate communication among them,” according to Harvard Medical School. 4. Finances: A study published by The Journals of Gerontology found that “financial strain was a strong and robust predictor of worsening mental health” among older adults, including anxiety and depression symptoms. Another way to help keep yourself mentally healthy in retirement is to make sure you have ample cash on hand to help pay off unexpected health care bills or fund any renovations that might need to be made to your home. Many seniors are surprised to learn that one potential asset for generating immediate cash is a life insurance policy. A life insurance policy is considered your personal property and—as such—you have the right to sell that policy anytime you like. When a consumer sells a policy in a “life settlement” transaction, the policy owner receives a cash payment and the purchaser of the policy assumes all future premium payments—then receives the death benefit upon the death of the insured. Candidates for life settlements are typically aged 70 years or older, with a life insurance policy that has a death benefit of at least $100,000. To learn more about life settlements, visit www.LISA.org or call the LISA office at (888) 672-3917.

BIG IDEAS FOR BUSINESSES OF ALL SIZES (NAPSI)—If you own or run a business, you’re not alone. There are some 30 million businesses in the U.S., ranging from small storefronts to large enterprise entities, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. While businesses of all sizes play a critical role in the economy, each workplace faces its own unique challenges, especially as it relates to growth and scalability. With company and workforce growth comes changing telecommunication needs. You might need to hire staff in new areas or cater to mobile millennials. Employees often expect their employers to provide them with flexible communication tools. Most business professionals want multiple connectivity options from their business phone solution, according to recent research from leading tech firm IDG. If you’re like most managers, you desire top-of-the-line technology that can help drive operational efficiencies and cater to your growth projections. Growing a business can be expensive but you shouldn’t have to miss out on communications solutions that can empower your workforce and spur continued growth. When you’re looking at your telecommunication needs, keep these important factors in mind. First, consider durable, affordable Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) deskset phones, which can manage Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) calls. Moving your telecommunications to the cloud can expand your phone system while maintaining central control. Cloud-based VoIP scales up or down, making it easy to add new locations or increase head count. SIP can also improve your business if you’re upgrading from an Ethernet jack or a traditional circuit transmission. This technology provides clear audio and reduces the need for costly installation and maintenance contracts. Some SIP desksets offer excellent user experience. Think color LCD screens for easy navigation, second screen displays with programmable keys, HD sound quality for natural conversations, and Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free headset calls. Secondly, take an introspective look at what’s truly needed from a communications perspective of your business. Evaluate what your operational landscape looks like. You may require full-featured desksets and handsets, which can hold, transfer, conference and intercom. Or you may need cordless solutions to dramatically improve mobility around a busy workplace. Cordless handsets and wireless headsets let people take calls as they move around a restaurant, warehouse or large office, for example. Also consider whether you’ll need the ability to expand your communications system as your business grows. You may find multiple cordless handsets or desksets, with their own phone numbers or extensions, essential to future-proofing your company for more employees and customers. Remember, the right communications tools can have a major effect on the productivity, experience and growth of your company. Select a phone solution that meets your unique needs, as well as one with flexibility, mobility features, dependable call quality, advanced call handling, reliable U.S.-based technical support, and warranty coverage. Good examples of these solutions include the new ErisTerminal SIP desksets and cordless mobility solutions from VTech Business Solutions. DID YOU KNOW? In a survey of 3,500 working professionals, Allied Van Lines found that 17 percent had relocated for a job. Roughly 50 percent of those who relocated did so for career advancement and/or more money, while 8 percent moved to be closer to family or for other relationship reasons. Moving is often characterized as stressful, and 31 percent of survey respondents who moved indicated that finding a home was the most challenging part of relocating for a job. Acclimating to a new community (29 percent), finding services such as utilities and medical care (13 percent) and making friends (12 percent) were also cited as some of the most challenging parts of relocating for a job. As difficult as relocating can be, 64 percent of those who had relocated expressed positive sentiments toward their job relocation, while just 7.5 percent harbored negative feelings about relocating (28 percent were neutral).
