The precise etymology of the word “leprechaun” is unknown, though many scholars believe the word we use today is derived from the old Irish “Lú Chorpain,” which means “small body.” Some scholars point to the 8th century word “luchorpán,” meaning “sprite” or “pygmy,” as the origins of the word leprechaun. Another word, “lubrican,” which first appeared in the English language in a 1604 play written by Thomas Middleton and Thomas Dekker, also has been linked to the modern word leprechaun.

March brings breezes loud and shrill,

MUST-HAVES FOR YOUR PADDY’S DAY PARTY For many revelers, St. Patrick’s Day wouldn’t be the same without Guinness, which is among Ireland’s most famous exports. This world renowned and easily recognizable Irish dry stout traces its origins to 1758, when Arthur Guinness began creating it at his brewery at St. James’s Gate in Dublin. The black beer and its familiar white head instantly evoke images of Ireland for millions of people across the globe. While hosts outside of Ireland might not be able to find a keg of the black stuff for their Paddy’s Day party, it is widely available in cans.

We Care About

Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy CORRECTING YOUR BITE Malocclusion, or “bad bite,” is the technical term for crooked, crowded, or protruding teeth that don’t fit together properly. Most malocclusions are inherited, including crowding of teeth, too much space between teeth, extra or missing teeth, cleft palate, and other irregularities of the jaws and face. Some malocclusions are acquired. They can be caused by thumb-sucking, tongue thrusting, dental disease, premature loss of primary or permanent teeth, accidents, or medical problems. Left untreated, these problems can become worse. A bad bite can cause abnormal wear of tooth surfaces, chewing difficulty, and excess stress on supporting bone and gum tissue. The dentist may be able to treat mild to moderate cases of malocclusion with reshaping, bonding, or capping of teeth.

At BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, our purpose in presenting this column is to exhibit the virtues of professional care in achieving and maintaining a healthy, vibrant smile. Through a combination of proven techniques and innovative technology, we attempt to move our patients toward an optimum state of oral health. When was your last dental checkup? Now is a good time to schedule an appointment for comprehensive dental care at 6 Batavia City Centre. You can reach us at 585.343.4246. We accept most insurances. P.S. Crooked and crowded teeth are difficult to clean, which may lead to tooth decay and gum disease.

per day. I feel no ill effects and have no stomach discomfort, but my wife says water is better. A kidney specialist basically said, “fluid is fluid” and that as long as I am hydrated, coffee is fine. With studies showing that coffee has antioxidants and reduces certain cancers, what should I do? -- M.K. ANSWER: People with long memories may recall that in the early 1980s, coffee was linked to an increased risk of pancreatic cancer. However, the study has become a textbook example of poor design, and further studies have suggested that coffee drinking may be associated with lower risk of breast, prostate and oral cancers. I wouldn’t recommend drinking coffee just for this reason, as the effect size, if it really exists, is pretty small. As far as hydration goes, your kidney specialist is completely right. The caffeine in regular coffee is perceived as a diuretic (a substance that makes you urinate excessively), but that turns out to be myth as well, at least in regular coffee drinkers. One potential ill effect of caffeine is that it minimally decreases calcium absorption. However, this amounts to the equivalent of calcium in a tablespoon or two of milk, so it is unlikely to affect overall calcium balance significantly. Eighty ounces of coffee is a lot of caffeine, and some people will get jittery or have sleep disturbances. It also can have variable effects on gut motility (that’s a delicate way of saying that it commonly causes diarrhea, but it also can cause constipation). All that said, if you aren’t having any ill effects from drinking so much coffee, coffee is fine -- though I still think that, as your wife says, water is better for many people.

*** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 64-year-old male. I had a stroke and lost vision in my right eye in 2005. I am right-handed. I had very high blood pressure at the time, and it’s now under control with drugs. Since then, I can no longer wear polarized sunglasses. I have light-sensitive eyes, but most over-the-counter sunglasses are polarized. My ophthalmologist and other eye specialists tell me they’ve never heard of my problem occurring. With polarized glasses on, I see in 3-D. Blue lines in the roadway and sewer lids or any metal covering appear to be 3-D to me. I have to be careful stepping over the handicap space lines because they look like curbs. Have you ever heard of this, or am I unique? If I can locate nonpolarized lenses, then I have no problem. Thank you. -- J.O. ANSWER: While everyone is unique, this is a condition I have heard of before. In fact, I know people who deliberately watch television with one eye in order to enhance the 3-D effects. Polarized light does tend to accentuate lines and edges, so it doesn’t surprise me that with your one working eye you have an accentuated 3-D sensation -- your brain has learned to use cues that people with two working eyes might miss. In your case, the brain has interpreted things so strongly that you are having some optical illusions. Sadly, I don’t have any practical advice beyond finding nonpolarized lenses. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. “The Broad Majestic Shannon,” The Pogues: This song, from the legendary Celtic punk band’s 1988 album, was inspired by the River Shannon, the longest river in Ireland, and is sure to invite people to the dance floor with its opening notes. Lead singer Shane MacGowan, widely regarded as one of the most accomplished lyricists of his time, said the song is about an Irishman returning to his home along the Shannon after many years spent in London. That gives the song a somewhat autobiographical tilt, as MacGowan himself spent time living in London and Ireland.

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Although you tend to bore easily and leave others to finish what you start, this is one time when you’d be wise to complete things on your own. Then you can move on to something new. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Your indecision about a personal situation might come out of those mixed signals you’re getting. Best not to make any commitments until you have a better sense of how things are going. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A dispute appears to be getting out of hand. But you should be able to step in and bring it all under control soon. Be patient. News about a potential career move might be delayed. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) Career obligations could interfere with important personal plans. But using a combination of common sense and compromise helps resolve the dilemma to everyone’s satisfaction. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) A stressful situation drains some of your energy reserves. But you soon bounce back in time to finish your tasks and enjoy a well-deserved weekend getaway. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) This is a good time to throw a party for friends and colleagues, and surprise them with your dazzling domestic skills. You also might want to reconsider that career move you put on hold. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A sudden change of mind by someone you relied on could cause a delay in moving ahead with your plans. But those whom you’ve helped out before are prepared to return the favor. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) You start the week feeling too shy to speak up in front of others. However, your self-assurance soon takes over, giving you the confidence you need to make yourself heard. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) One way to deal with a pesky personal dilemma this week is to meet it head-on. Insist on an explanation of why the situation reached this point and what can be done to change it. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) The creative Capricorn finds several outlets for her or his talents this week. Also note that while a romantic connection looks promising, remember to allow it to develop on its own. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) You stand out this week as the best friend a friend can have. But be careful that you don’t take too many bows, or you might see gratitude replaced with resentment. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) What seems to be an ideal investment should be checked out thoroughly before you snap at the offer and find yourself hooked by an expensive scam. BORN THIS WEEK: Your wisdom is matched by your generosity. You are a person who people know they can rely on. (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

CROSSWORD

“A child educated only at school is an uneducated child...” ~ George Santayana It seems likely that professional educators subscribe without reservation to Santayana’s “thought.” Some parents seem to feel that the public schools are fully responsible for the education of their children, and they feel absolutely no responsibility for assisting. Indeed, the “support” from such homes may be negative. The schools have a child for a few hours each day. It is in the home where children learn some of the most important lessons. The parents who truly love their children will do all they can to supplement the school’s efforts, especially in the examples they set. We recognize the need of some families for a minimum services at minimum cost. We offer immediate disposition when such service best meets a family’s needs.

Volunteering Keeps Senior Active and Involved By Bonnie Marrocco

I

f you think of senior citizens as frail, white-haired couples sitting in rocking chairs on their front porches, think again! The Corporation for National and Community Service reported that in 2014 alone, 10.7 million older Americans spent a combined 2 billion hours volunteering. Senior citizens are an important part of the volunteer community and millions of them donate their time to help their communities every year. Gloria “Midge” Cotter is one such senior. Midge, who is 84 years old, has lived at 400 Towers in Batavia for almost twenty years. Her age hasn’t slowed her down a bit. For fifteen of those years, she has volunteered to make meals for her fellow residents three times a week. She does the grocery shopping and prepares the food by herself for 10-20 residents each meal. Residents, Midge’s friends and neighbors, sign up the week before, and Midge always makes extra for those who come at the last minute. “It’s the smell that gets them,” Midge says with a warm smile. “They smell the meatloaf or biscuits and gravy and decide they want to eat.” She is glad, but hardly surprised, observing that neighbors love her cooking. It is especially important that these neighbors, all seniors, are eating consistent, healthy meals. 400 Towers pays for the food and is reimbursed when residents purchase the meals ($3 for breakfast and $3.50 for lunch and dinner). The building is comprised of 148 apartments for senior citizens, so all residents have a kitchen and can prepare meals themselves if they prefer. “I get the satisfaction of seeing people who might be in their room alone eating toast, come down and visit,” Midge said. “It’s good for them to get out and socialize.”

Midge at her table, planning her next meal. Her dedication to family and community is evident. She lights up when she talks about her large family and proudly displays their photos. She finds fulfillment in cooking for her fellow residents and intends on doing so for as long as she can. Midge is also the building Bingo coordinator and runs games three times a week, while still managing to attend church every Sunday and babysit her grandchildren when needed. Although her busy schedule seems demanding for any age, this octogenarian has no plans to slow down. “As long as God gives me the strength, I’ll keep doing it,” Midge proclaims with a twinkle in her eyes. “I heard that the hospital is looking for volunteers too, I’ll have to see about that.”

Days after moving to 400 Towers, her husband of thirty-three years passed away and Midge knew she couldn’t sit around all day in her small, tidy apartment. “Once you get in that chair, you don’t get up,” Midge said. “Nineteen years ago, residents started asking me if I would make coffee and help in the kitchen. That turned into doing meals regularly for the past fifteen years.”

If you are thinking of volunteering, consider these popular forms of volunteering, according to the Corporation for National Community & Service:

Midge might be on to something. The National Institute on Aging found that participating in meaningful, productive activities, such as volunteering, may lower the risk of health problems, including dementia, and improve longevity. Studies reveal that older volunteers show lower mortality and depression rates, fewer physical limitations, and higher levels of well-being compared to others in their age group.

Gloria “Midge” Cotter is one of the inspiriting women we have chosen to highlight on International Women’s Day, (March 8th). To read more about the incredible things women are doing in our area, visit our website at www.gvpennysaver. com/my_hometown/ hometown_stories.

Midge, a Batavia native, the mother of 7, grandmother of 25, greatgrandmother of 44 and great-great-grandmother of 4…5… (she’s lost count!), has spent her life raising her family, working and volunteering. She understands and appreciates the social, mental, and physical benefits of staying active and involved by helping others and giving back to society. “I volunteered for the Elba Ladies Auxiliary for twenty years, the Salvation Army Ladies Auxiliary for twenty years, the VFW Ladies Auxiliary for twenty years and the Little League Snack Bar for four years,” Midge states. “I like to help and keep busy.” Some things never change. She started the “Over 90 Luncheon” fifteen years ago and pays for it with her own money. “I wanted to do something special every year for residents who were 90 or above, so I invite them to a special lunch of Swiss steak, mashed potatoes, green beans, cake and ice cream,” Midge states. “I want to do it from my heart, not from someone else’s pocketbook.”

• Collecting, serving, preparing, or distributing food • Fundraising or selling items to raise money • Engaging in general labor, like helping build homes or clean up parks • Tutoring or teaching • Mentoring youth • Collecting, making, or distributing clothing Seniors interested in volunteer opportunities can find them through their local senior center, religious institutions, membership organizations, places of employment, hospitals, schools and charitable organizations.

It had fallen out of my bag. I was so VERY GRATEFUL!! It was so encouraging to see the help that she gave, along with the help that Hegedorn’s had given by calling my phone also. I will be sure to respond, in the future, when I see a need.

Last Saturday when I was at Hegedorn’s in Webster, I realized that I had lost my phone. I went to the service desk to see if someone had turned it in. No one had turned it in. I started to retrace my steps in the store, when a very nice lady who overheard the conversation, said that she would call my phone and we could listen for the ring. When we didn’t hear it in the store, she suggested we go check my car. It was there!

It’s refreshing to see and read, and then realize that there’s someone at the “Genesee Valley Penny Saver” who respects and cares about the English language. Whether you call it “copy editing” or “proofreading,” the publication has an expert professional who knows a lot about correct spelling, syntax, and grammar. Easy on the eyes and brain, even though we’re talking about advertising here, your publication presents an errorfree reading experience!

To the Venters sick of line budgers - Those are our “privileged” shoppers, and we deal with their “I’m in a hurry” daily. Some customers are extremely impatient, and when the lines are long, the quiet remarks and huffing and puffing aren’t going to change a thing. They realize that but continue to complain anyway. Also, why customers feel that it’s no big deal to rip open packaging and leave merchandise everywhere is mind boggling. We’re talking adults here. Working retail was difficult this holiday season. Some customers are so miserable that I feel sorry for them. They are wasting a beautiful life being that way, but they shouldn’t take it out on the cashiers.

Many years ago, I bought 2 acres from a farmer who raised cows. We had a very enjoyable 12 years there. We had great neighbors. Yes, we had 2 to 4 days each year that we could smell the natural fertilizer being spread, when the wind was blowing in the right direction. No big deal. 363 days had air quality so pure you can’t find it anywhere in the city. We also had unchlorinated water that contained natural calcium. The worst noise pollution was on the very hot nights when we were trying to sleep. Boy, the crickets can be loud! My advice to anyone buying a house near a farm is to perform due diligence. Think about it. If a couple of days of odor will ruin your life, don’t buy near a farm. For all others, I

Neighbors happen out of our choices! I am grateful to have nice neighbors, but on top, our next-door neighbor is really like our lucky charm. Moving from TX, I bought my very first home, with a 200+yard driveway in beautiful SUMMER, forgetting about WINTER. I was confident I could learn it all despite being female and foreigner and being housetrapped with 2 kids was not in my imagination. Well, either this is the worst winter in a while, or it’s me experiencing the homeowner reality... The 1st snow storm, my John Deere was still in summer mode. The 2nd storm, without chains it could barely move. The 3rd storm, I got snow tires instead. The 4th storm, it finally works! Every time, our driveway is magically cleared because a

lovely neighbor “quietly” sent the elves over!!!

My husband and I go to a local restaurant for a fish fry. Last Friday, February 23rd, we went and the hostess came and asked us for our drink order, but most important is, she took extra time getting ready for work that day. She was dressed in long black pants and a real nice black top, very professional. Kudos, young lady. Stop by and see for yourself at Gunsmoke Restaurant. Diane & Norm Thank you to my wonderful neighbor Bob for keeping my driveway cleared out. It is appreciated.

say, enjoy! If life hadn’t interfered, we would still be in that house and on that land. This is to the person who complained about being wished “a happy holiday”. You need to think before making such a comment. Not everyone celebrates Christmas. Some are Jewish and celebrate Hanukkah; others may celebrate other religious holidays. Bottom line, not everyone celebrates Christmas. So as not to offend those whodon’t and because you may not know what they celebrate, wishing them “Happy Holidays” is very appropriate and considerate. To the person who wrote that wishing others a “Happy

Holiday” is insincere: There are a handful of holidays in December, some that are far older than Christmas. To insist on wishing one and all a “Merry Christmas” is insensitive and disrespectful. It becomes all about you. Wishing others a “Happy Holiday” indicates a generosity of spirit and an enlightened mind. It is an acknowledgment that other’s holidays are just as important to them as Christmas is to you. It is no more and no less valid than any other. Further, treating everyone equally does not indicate an attack on Christmas. Whatever holiday you are celebrating, I wish you a happy and safe one.

Age Healthier With These Five Tips (NAPS)—As your wisdom grows with age, so can the number of pill bottles in your medicine cabinet. For those “young-at-heart” seniors, sticking to healthy habits is the key to aging well. With some simple steps, you can keep a healthy routine that also gives you more time to do the things you love. Joe Koren, pharmacy manager at Walgreens, shares his top five tips for managing your health with a busy schedule: 1. Consult the experts You know to go for regular checkups with your general practitioner, but don’t forget that pharmacists can also be accessible experts to answer questions about your health. In fact, your pharmacist is a licensed professional who provides different health care services including immunizations and can help you understand why and how to take your medications to support effective treatment. Some pharmacies offer extended hours, and 24-hour chat with pharmacy staff is available whenever you need it. Many locations also have health care clinics to treat minor injuries and illness, which can be a convenient and cost-efficient alternative to a doctor’s visit. 2. Let your smartphone help you With a packed list of to-dos, friends to meet and grandchildren to watch, medication routines can easily slip the mind. Luckily, your mobile phone is a helpful tool to keep track of your medications, right in the palm of your hand. For example, the Walgreens app can help you set daily pill reminder notifications, so you never miss a dose. You can also find closeby health care providers and arrange a video call for a face-to-face consultation with a physician or specialist through the app. If using your smartphone comes with its challenges, ask one of the pharmacy staff or a family member to help set it up for you. 3. Simplify your prescription refills Multiple prescriptions can mean multiple trips to the pharmacy each month. A trained pharmacist can recommend convenient refill options such as aligning multiple refill trips to one single date, switching to 90day refills or having eligible prescriptions sent directly to your home. All these services can make it easier to stay on your medication schedule and help save time. 4. Find perks in your Medicare D plan So you’ve signed up for your Medicare Part D plan, but are you using it to save money? Fortunately, many prescription drug plans include Walgreens in their preferred pharmacy network, which could mean a convenient way to lower your co-pays. A little bit of research into the right combination of plan, provider and pharmacy can go a long way to help you save money. Walgreens pharmacies even conduct senior days, giving you extra advice on health care topics and special offers. 5. Maintain a healthy lifestyle They say age is only a number, and when you’re in control of your health, that’s very true! With the time and money you’ll save from these tips, think about how you can embark on and maintain an even healthier lifestyle. Why not challenge yourself to walk for at least 30 minutes a day, connect with friends and family, or take the time to prepare nutritious meals? These five small steps can all contribute to a healthier life, and free up time and head space for the things you really love. For additional information on tools to make medication management more convenient, visit www.walgreens.com/pharmacy. Your pharmacist may have more ways to save you time and money than you realize.

DEBUNKING MYTHS ABOUT IRISH CULTURE The Irish are not enamored with leprechauns. Come St. Patrick’s Day, leprechauns are purported to be mischief makers who can rev-up the fun. But within Ireland, the only places you’re liable to find leprechauns is in tourist gift shops. In fact, while the origins of leprechauns may date back to ancient Ireland, many people now believe the image of the fighting, illtempered leprechaun is offensive to the Irish people.

In a survey of 3,500 working professionals, Allied Van Lines found that 17 percent had relocated for a job. Roughly 50 percent of those who relocated did so for career advancement and/or more money, while 8 percent moved to be closer to family or for other relationship reasons. Moving is often characterized as stressful, and 31 percent of survey respondents who moved indicated that finding a home was the most challenging part of relocating for a job. Acclimating to a new community (29 percent), finding services such as utilities and medical care (13 percent) and making friends (12 percent) were also cited as some of the most challenging parts of relocating for a job. As difficult as relocating can be, 64 percent of those who had relocated expressed positive sentiments toward their job relocation, while just 7.5 percent harbored negative feelings about relocating (28 percent were neutral).
