REAL ESTATE SECTION

DID YOU KNOW? Prospective real estate investors who hope to buy, hold and rent out their investment properties should first interview potential property managers before buying homes. While it’s possible to find property managers willing to manage single-family homes or duplexes, the financial resource Bankrate.com notes that many property managers prefer to manage large apartment complexes instead. Managing properties is hard work, and without skilled property managers on their side, real estate investors may become overwhelmed by the responsibilities of taking care of their real estate investments while simultaneously trying to maintain their own residences. Before buying investment properties, prospective real estate investors should interview various local property managers or property management firms, inquiring about their fees and what is included in those fees. If the cost of hiring property managers drastically cuts into the profits investors hoped to make off their investment properties, they might be better off looking to invest their money in areas other than real estate. Prospective investors can compare the potential return on investment after the cost of property managers has been factored in to the return they might get from more traditional investments to determine if investing in real estate is a sound financial decision.

MOTHER’S DAY CELEBRATION IDEAS The Crafter Mothers who are avid crafters may enjoy a craft-themed Mother’s Day. A family crafting project can make for a fun afternoon and produce mementos that Mom will cherish for years to come. Dads and kids can plan the project in advance without Mom’s knowledge, arranging all of the materials ahead of time and setting up the crafting station the night before or while Mom is relaxing on Mother’s Day morning. Kids can even get a head start on the day by making their own craft for Mom and giving it to her as a Mother’s Day present. Dads can keep the craft theme going at dinner and get a laugh out of Mom by pouring her a craft beer when dinner is served.

The tradition of Mother’s Day in the United States dates back more than a century to 1908, when West Virginia native Anna Jarvis held a memorial service to honor her mother, who had passed away three years earlier, and all mothers in Grafton, West Virginia. Mother’s Day would ultimately become a national holiday in the United States in 1914, thanks in large part to Jarvis’ campaigning. As Jarvis, who never married and never had children of her own, grew old, she criticized Mother’s Day as overly commercial, even trying to have it removed from the calendar. Those efforts failed, and Mother’s Day remains popular now, more than 100 years after the idea for it was conceived.

Many pet owners would never intentionally harm their companion animals. In fact, pet owners often go above and beyond to ensure their animals are well cared for and content. However, many well-meaning people may be inadvertently harming their pets with something they provide each and every day: food. Obesity is on the rise among pets. The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention says that 54 percent of dogs and 59 percent of cats in the United States were categorized as overweight or obese in 2016. That marks an increase from 52.5 percent and 58.3 percent, respectively, from four years ago. The majority of veterinarians think that pet obesity is a significant problem and nearly half of pet owners admit that their vets have discussed a pet’s ideal weight with them during pet health visits. TOOTHPASTE SELECTION When selecting the right toothpaste to meet your needs, begin by looking at its fluoride content. Numerous studies confirm that fluoride in drinking water is a safe and effective way to protect tooth enamel and prevent cavities. Next, check for the American Dental Association (ADA) seal of acceptance, which confirms that the toothpaste meets the ADA’s strict requirements for containing fluoride and active ingredients to improve oral hygiene, is free of flavoring agents that contribute to tooth decay (such as sugar), and has scientific evidence to support that it is safe and effective. It is important to note as well that participation in the ADA program is voluntary, and not all good toothpaste brands will carry the seal.

At BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, we’ll be happy to tell you about products we know will help you maintain a healthy smile between routine dental checkups as well as demonstrate good brushing and flossing techniques. For an appointment for family dental care, please call us at 585.343.4246. Our full-service dental office is conveniently located at 6 Batavia City Centre. We accept most insurances. P.S. It is the mechanical action of brushing teeth with a bristled brush that is mostly responsible for removing plaque from teeth. Toothpaste can contribute to the effect by adding breathenhancing additives and fluoride.

B-12 Shot Paralyzes Arm

Henrietta • 585.359.4987

---

DEAR DR. ROACH: Two years ago at my yearly physical, my doctor said I was low on vitamin B-12 and that the only way to increase it was through a shot in the arm. I received my first shot that day, and my arm was paralyzed for four days. I went in a week later for my second shot, only to have the same thing happen again. I didn’t get any more shots. It still hurts to this day, even though an MRI shows nothing wrong. The specialist says it was just coincidence. I cannot hold my arm over my head or stretch it out. What’s your take? -- D.R. ANSWER: Well, I don’t believe it was just coincidence. Nerve damage following injection is extremely rare, but it sounds like what you are describing. This can be due to direct trauma to the nerve by the needle, or by an inflammatory reaction. The treatment is physical therapy, but unfortunately for you, it works best if begun right away. I still think it is worth your while, however. Also, vitamin B-12 deficiency absolutely can be treated with oral vitamin B-12. Although pernicious anemia, the most common form of vitamin B-12 deficiency, is due to poor B-12 absorption, this can be overcome simply by giving much more B-12 than the body usually needs. A dose of 1 mg daily by mouth is a safe, inexpensive and effective treatment for vitamin B-12 deficiency. Many of my patients still want the injection, however, even though it seems inexplicable to me. ***

DEAR DR. ROACH: Yesterday, while walking barefoot in my back yard, I stepped on a bee. This has happened to me before, and it seems that each time the results are a little worse. After I removed the stinger from the underside of one of my toes, I put ice on the sting and took a Benadryl. Since this happened in the evening, I was able to elevate my leg for the rest of the night. In the morning, the area was swollen, red, hot and painful. Now, after my usual three-mile morning power walk, the swelling and soreness is spreading up my foot. I am notorious for going barefoot and stepping on bees. I just know this will happen again. Do you have any suggestions for what might help prevent a bee sting from going “viral”? ANSWER: Your best bet is not to get stung in the first place, which for you means not stepping barefoot where bees might be. It’s particularly important for you, as local reactions to bee stings do tend to get worse over time. Fortunately, they do not usually predict the life-threatening anaphylactic reaction. Once stung by a bee, remove the stinger, within seconds if possible, since the venom can continue to be released for several seconds. The local reaction usually lasts less than a day in most people, but it can last up to five days. The reason the swelling and soreness spread after your walk is that the exercise and increased blood flow to the area allowed the venom to move to different areas, and the inflammatory response also progressed. I would recommend that you continue cold compresses and avoid your power walks for at least another day or two after a sting.

Delivering The Freedom Of Choice RECOGNIZE POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS HOUSEHOLD CHEMICALS Homes are safe havens that people retreat to in an effort to relax and unwind. However, homes may be harboring some hazards that put their inhabitants at risk. Cleaning products and chemicals can be found in every home, but some may be putting people in jeopardy. Even seemingly safe items can prove dangerous when they are used and/or stored incorrectly. Individuals who make a concerted effort to educate themselves about common household chemicals can reduce the likelihood that such cleaners will hurt them in the long run.

Do you have HEEL pain or ARCH pain? HEEL SPUR SYNDROME/PLANTAR FASCIITIS is a common problem among people who are active. It starts as a dull intermittent pain in the heel and progresses to a sharp persistent pain. Classically, it is worse in the morning with the first few steps, after sitting, after standing or after walking. • Plantar fasciitis often begins with irritation and tearing of the fibrous band of tissue on the bottom of the foot, which may eventually result in the formation of a heel spur. • Contributing factors: Flat pronated feet, high arched feet, poor shoe support, increase age, sudden weight increase, increased activity level, family tendency. • 95% of our patients’ symptoms are resolved with conservative treatment, avoiding surgical intervention. • We also offer surgical procedures with the best post op success rates using Endoscopic Plantar Fasciotomy techniques (minimal incisions and scarring; often back in a shoe in 1 week).

What You Need To Know About Heart Valve Disease (NAPS)—More than 8 million American adults have a condition known as heart valve disease (HVD). While it can be managed, too many people who have HVD don’t know it. To help that situation, the American Heart Association, with support from Edwards Lifesciences Foundation, answers seven frequently asked questions. 1. What is HVD? In HVD, heart valves don’t work as they should. A heart valve should open one way and seal tight when closed. Sometimes, either due to congenital heart defects, side effects of cancer treatment, or secondary heart disease, the valve allows leaks, putting a strain on the heart and prohibiting proper circulation of blood. 2. Who’s at risk? HVD can happen to anyone at any age, but the risk increases with age and in those with congenital heart valve defects or who have had a heart attack, rheumatic fever, hypercholesterolemia, or an infection in the lining of the heart walls or valves. These individuals should speak frequently with their health care providers about HVD. Currently, HVD prevalence is greater in older Caucasians, though African Americans and Hispanics tend to have lower ideal heart health levels, which can lead to HVD. 3. Is HVD preventable? No, but it can be managed through a healthy lifestyle including proper nutrition, exercise, not smoking, weight management and medication. Most people who get treatment experience improved symptoms and can continue to live longer, healthy lives. 4. What are the signs and symptoms? • Shortness of breath • Feeling easily fatigued • Swollen ankles or feet • Heart palpitations (rapid rhythms or skips) • Chest tightness or pressure. Symptoms can be subtle and are often attributed to aging or other diseases. If you experience any of these, see your doctor. 5. What treatments are available? The heart valve can be repaired, or replaced with an artificial one. 6. Who can help? There’s a group of volunteer ambassadors comprised of heart valve disease survivors and caregivers who represent the face of heart valve disease in America. They work to raise awareness about heart valve disease and share available resources for patients and families. You can connect with them at sharefromheart.heart.org. 7. Where can one learn more? You can get further information from the American Heart Association at sharefromheart.heart.org.

• On May 10, 1877, President Rutherford B. Hayes has the White House's first telephone installed, although he rarely received phone calls. In fact, the Treasury Department possessed the only other direct phone line to the White House at that time. The White House phone number was "1." • On May 12, 1949, an early crisis of the Cold War comes to an end when the Soviet Union lifts its 11-month blockade of West Berlin. The blockade had been broken by a massive U.S.-British airlift of supplies to West Berlin's 2 million citizens.

When caught early, heart valve disease can be treated to help you have a longer, healthier life. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

“Our fathers teach us what we should become; our mothers teach us what we are…” ~ Peter Davidson

Lucky is the child who has two devoted parents. Guidance from both mother and father may be equally important, but it’s apt to come from slightly different viewpoints. It’s perhaps natural that a father wants to help us amount to something and avoid the troubles that could damage our lives. Mothers want that for us, too, but they’re more likely to be realistic. They are better at helping us to recognize our strengths and weaknesses… to understand our potential in terms of what we really are. You may call on us for advice and guidance such as you would expect from your closest friends. Our goal is to be worthy of your trust. A Happy Mother’s Day to all mothers, from our staff.

Brockport Professor Earns Global Fulbright Award By Amanda Dudek

D

r. Lauren Lieberman, a distinguished service professor at the College at Brockport has been a part of the Brockport community for 24 years, and she has run Jennifer & Kiersten, Camp Abilities Camp Abilities for 23 of them. Camp Abilities, a one-week educational sports camp for children and teens who are blind, visually impaired, and deafblind, felt like a natural next step for co-founder Lieberman. This year, her vision and hard work have earned her the Global Fulbright Award. Having taught for several years at the Perkins School for the Blind, Dr. Lieberman, who currently teaches physical and adapted physical education in Brockport’s Kinesthesiology Department, said that while all disabilities are important, helping kids with visual impairments is her passion. “Years ago, we did not have a program for them,” she said. “So, in 1996, I started Camp Abilities, and we have served 150 children with visual impairments every year since then.” Quickly, Camp Abilities had more camp applicants than it has space. “People were sending their children from other states,”said Dr. Lieberman. This led to the founding of Camp Abilities educational sports camps in other states. “In 2001, we started a Camp Abilities in Alaska,” said Dr. Lieberman. “We have continued starting camps in other states, and even countries, since then.” Receiving the Global Fulbright award, an honor given to those whose work around the globe supports understanding between the United States and other countries, offers Camp Abilities a tremendous opportunity. “The Fulbright award is given to both professors and college students,” explained Dr. Lieberman. “It is not easy to receive, but if you do, you obtain comprehensive funds to continue your work in two or three other countries” “I want to get Camp Abilities on other continents!” Dr. Lieberman exclaimed. “Right now, many people have to come to Brockport to see Camp Abilities in action. My award proposal was to start a Camp Abilities on three different continents, reducing travel time and expenses significantly.” Thanks to the Global Fulbright Award, Dr. Lieberman’s vision for Camp Abilities is about to take a giant leap forward. “This coming fall I will be going to Ghana, Ireland and Brazil to start camps in those countries,” she said, describing the reaction in Ghana when she shared her Camp Abilities plans last year. “They are very excited about starting this.” “All too often, people with visual impairments around the globe are treated like second-class citizens,” Dr. Lieberman continued. “Sports is one way to value them and showcase what they do. It is a very relatable medium.” According to Dr, Liberman, Camp Abilities camps have been started in Portugal, Costa Rica, Puerto Rico and Canada. “Seeing the benefits of Camp Abilities helps communities to understand and value it, making them much more likely to start their own.” Sports instruction at Camp Abilities is unique. Group sports instruction does not work well for a child is blind or visually impaired. Instead, one-to-one, tactile teaching is offered. Each class has sports specialists. be physical education teachers, teachers of the visually impaired as well as those interested in physical and adapted physical education work at the camp each year. “Teaching and including children with visual impairments is not something these students would normally learn in college,” Dr. Lieberman shared. She explains that this is why Camp Abilities also equips visiting children Sports is one way to to advocate for/and take value these children a leadership role in their own inclusion. “These and showcase what children often have to they do!show others how to teach them,” she said. Dr. Lauren Lieberman, “Our tools and methods Camp Abilities Director help make inclusion successful.” “One of my biggest goals is to continue to help start other camps, giving these children the camp experience,” said Dr. Lieberman, who has written a Camp Abilities start-up manual. “These camps won’t work unless you are purposeful in making all of the sports accessible,” she explained. “These children, ages 9-19, stay at the camp for an entire week. It is important to create camps that are safe for them.” Meanwhile, many exciting events are still ahead. “Five students and their P.E. teacher will be visiting us to learn how to set up Camp Abilities this summer,” Dr. Lieberman said. “Next weekend, we are hosting a deafblind family weekend here in Brockport. College students and I will be working with the New York State Deafblind Collaborative in New York City for this event.” In June, Dr. Lieberman and Camp Abilities will also hold a camp in the Catskills for children from Orthodox families. “We are very inclusive,” she added. In addition, Dr. Lieberman will be coordinating an International Symposium on Physical Activity and Visual Impairment in conjunction with the Scottish Sensory Center to be held at the University of Scotland in Edinburgh. She enthused, “People from 27 countries will be learning and sharing through sports with people who are visually impaired.” For more information, visit the Camp Abilities website at www. campabilities.org. Modern technology has forever transformed the classroom. As calculators replaced abacuses, mobile phone apps have now replaced calculators, and such advancements continue to change how students learn. One way schools are notably different from those of the past is through the absence of a once major component of the classroom layout. Chalkboards are either missing or completely retrofitted in modern learning environments. In the 1800s, slate blackboards were the new technology, replacing handheld tablets of wood or slate. Within the last few years, schools have increasingly opted for cleaner “white boards” or “smartboards,” which are digitally connected to computers and offer touch interfaces similar to those on tablets and smartphones. As ebooks replace textbooks and more assignments are handed in via digital documents, lockers may be the next to vanish.

TACKLING THE ULTIMATE WORKFORCE CHALLENGE (NAPSI)—Today, many people in business talk of diversity fatigue, says Barbara Adams, PsyD, author of “Women, Minorities, & Other Extraordinary People: The New Path for Workforce Diversity” (Greenleaf Book Group Press). But, she adds, that means “we’ve momentarily lost sight of the magnitude of opportunity before us.” Her book can serve people in leadership positions who recognize, “the tremendous strategic value of having diverse, inclusive workforces,” but have struggled to commit to it. For all the many well-meaning diversity initiatives that organizations have undertaken lately, “personal mindsets and beliefs are what count,” she writes. “People in leadership positions,” Dr. Adams adds, “have the ability to replace judgment and bias that naturally occur in us with curiosity about differences.” And that, she concludes, is “truly the beginning of embracing the opportunity that lies in workforce diversity and inclusion” and can make companies and organizations more successful. Her book reframes the journey ahead through an organizational lens, highlighting the importance of cultural norms, challenging misconceptions, and providing research and practical tools. DID YOU KNOW? Through the years, cars have evolved so much that certain parts once integral to their operation have now become obsolete. Only time will tell which components and features of today’s cars will disappear in the future. However, present drivers can reminisce about how cars have evolved even in the last 20 to 30 years. The following are some once-standard parts and features that have all but disappeared from modern vehicles. Ashtrays and cigarette lighters: Smoking-related accessories began to vanish as the dangers of smoking became more apparent. Ashtrays in the dashboard and in the rear armrests are no longer standard. Full-sized spare tire: The “doughnuts” of today can be driven on for only limited distances and look awkward on larger vehicles. The full-sized spare enabled drivers to repair the flat tire on their own schedules. Control knobs: Push buttons and digital dashes have replaced the manual knobs of the past. Levers often enabled drivers to adjust the heat without taking their eyes off the road. Bench seats: Front bench seats have given way to two seats separated by a center console. No longer is it possible to fit three or four people in the front of a vehicle. Whip antenna: Remember those thin, flexible antennas? Many modern vehicles feature more solid antennas that can be unscrewed for trips through the carwash or an antenna that is modeled into the car in an inconspicuous way. If drivers exhibit a preference for satellite radio in the years ahead, traditional antennas may soon become obsolete as well. AUTOMOTIVE

Check tire pressure. Right before you pack up the car to hit the open road, check each of your tires ’ pressure, making sure the pressure in each tire is at the level recommended in your ow ner’s manual. Inflating tires to the proper pressure takes just a minute or so, but that minute can protect you and your passengers w hile also saving you money at the filling station.

Once upon a time, there was an airline named Pan Am. Pan Am bought a very special plane from Boeing called the 747SP - the “SP” stood for “special performance.” Indeed, when it first took flight in 1975, this plane - though not as big as other planes - could go faster and farther than all other commercial airliners. Only forty-five of these special planes were ever produced. One of them was named “Charles Lindbergh” after the ultra-famous aviator, and flew its passengers between New York, London and Hong Kong. But fate had in store something even more special for this quick little plane...

To Infinity and Beyond! On January 7th, 2019, mankind learned a little more about how stars are born. No, I’m not talking about Lady Gaga! I’m talking about literal stars, born in stellar nurseries. What did we learn? When a star is born, a great wind called feedback is produced that blows away all the other baby stars surrounding it. This was a big surprise, because, until now, scientists believed that only the very oldest stars, called supernovae, had any effect on the formation of new stars. Turns out the very youngest stars matter, too!

Search Sofia Observatory Plane Stars Stellar Supernovae Telescope Stratosphere Nebula

How was this discovered? Remember that little plane? After it was retired from commercial flight, NASA purchased it and turned it into SOFIA, or the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy. Now, instead of carrying passengers to see distant lands, the SOFIA carries a 45,000 lbs. telescope that takes us closer to the stars. In order to do this, the SOFIA needed to make some major changes. Instead of flying around 30,000 feet like it had always done, the SOFIA had to fly up into the stratosphere - up to 45,000 feet! Why? The air up in the stratosphere is extremely dry, meaning there is no water vapor to form clouds that block the view of things like stellar nurseries, nebulae, or black holes that the SOFIA sees with its infrared light. This is how the SOFIA was able to investigate the birth of stars in - By Nicole Karam our closest stellar nursery, the Orion Nebula. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

CML is a form of leukemia which starts in the bone marrow where cell production is started. In CML cell formation is altered and doesn’t allow for normal blood cells to be made. These abnormal cells over produce and crowd out normal cells making it difficult for the body to perform normal everyday tasks. Chase will need to be on oral medication at this point and will have frequent visits to Roswell throughout his life. Chase is a great kid who is known for being kind and a friend to people he meets. He has been recognized by his teachers and was most recently named Student of the Month. When not involved in his school activities, Chase can mostly be found on the basketball courts where he not only plays but supports the varsity team. Any support from the community to help lessen the burden for the family is greatly appreciated. Donations for food at door. Please have basket donations to Lisa or Elaine by May 10th please. What does it take to get the movie “Unplanned” screened in your theater? I understand you hedged your bets that it would underperform on opening weekend. However, after Unplanned exceeded expectations with an opening weekend of $6.3 million, landing it in 4th place for weekend box office sales, it is still not on your screens for the first week of April. Instead you have continued to carry the 5th and 6th best-selling movies from the weekend. Is this deliberate censorship GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

If it is a result of bad planning, I hope that, in the future, you would know your audience better and show movies that support life, family, marriage, hope and God. It is certainly better than the average garbage put out by Hollywood on a monthto-month basis. I use the local library often. I grew up respecting that others are there reading and studying. However, I can’t seem to find a time of day to go where it is ever quiet. In the morning, mothers are there with their little ones who are understandably running and/or screaming. TWICE A VICTIM: FINDING A PATH FORWARD AFTER AN ACCIDENT (NAPSI)—Each year, hundreds of thousands of Americans are injured in serious accidents. Though the causes may be different, one thing is increasingly common: Because there are often long delays in collecting payments for legitimate insurance claims, injured parties can become “twice victims.”

An All-Too-Common Story “The bus accident caused serious injury to my right wrist and I broke my left ankle,” said Debra A., a school aide working with disabled children. “During a class trip, the school bus was in an accident and my entire life changed in an instant. While there were safety features on the bus for the children, there were none for the adults. When we crashed, I flew forward and quickly realized I was seriously hurt,” she added. Debra’s injuries were so serious she could not return to work. Soon, she faced mounting medical bills, she was delinquent on her mortgage, and all her general household and family expenses were piling up. She had nowhere to go and no one to turn to for financial support. There were no family members who could loan her money and since she was out of work, no bank would either. Debra was a victim, not once, but twice. She was hurt in the accident and soon thereafter, she was hurting from the financial realities of life.

With the assistance of her attorney, Debra sued the bus operator whose insurance company fought her for years. “I never dreamed it would take 10 years for the insurance company to pay me the money I was entitled to,” she said. “Everything I worked for, everything I owned was soon going to be lost because the insurance company was finding every reason not to settle. The most insulting part of it all was that during the entire insurance settlement process, I had the feeling that the insurance company was simply trying to wear me down by offering me much less than my attorney felt my claim was really worth. They probably assumed I was getting desperate and they figured I’d jump at a low settlement offer. I almost did.

“With my back against the wall and no place else to turn for financial help, I found a silver lining in LawCash, a leader in the presettlement legal funding industry. The cash advances from LawCash saved my house, gave me the freedom to take care of necessary expenses, and more important, the advances gave me peace of mind to continue to pursue my case. I felt empowered,” Debra added. “Once my case was resolved on terms that were fair, I paid back my legal advance and I was able to move on with my life.”

How Presettlement Funding Works The service does not promote or encourage litigation. All its clients must be represented by legal counsel and must have filed a legitimate claim before LawCash will accept an application. Nor does it influence the case, as all decisions related to the legal approach and overall strategy are between the victim and his or her lawyer. Perhaps most important, the presettlement funding is not a loan. If the case is lost, the claimants owe nothing. In addition, they’re not required to put up collateral or make interim payments, and the advance has no effect on their credit.

After the accident, Debra was not able to work with her disabled students any longer, but she has not lost her interest in helping others. She is even asking her State Legislators to think about their constituents when considering access to this critical legal funding resource.

Mother’s Day is right around the corner, and this special holiday serves to honor all those women who devote so much time and effort to their families. While gifts and other trinkets are certainly part of the celebration, a vast majority of children opt to treat Mom to a night out on the town come Mother’s Day. Not only does this give mom a night off from cooking, but also it presents an opportunity to get dressed up and spend time together as a family.

CONCRETE PATIOS/SIDEWALKS Portable vs. Standby Generators Prepare your hom e for a pow er outage (Family Features) Understanding the distinction betw een these options w ill help any family determine w hich is the better choice for their home. • A portable generator is an immediate, but temporary, solution. A portable gas generator is less expensive than a standby unit and doesn’t require installation time. Its benefits have limits, as it can only pow er a few home appliances for a few hours before needing refueling. • A standby generator w ith an automatic transfer sw itch provides a seamless and permanent backup pow er solution. It is professionally installed outside the home and can pow er more of your home’s appliances for long periods of time. Pow ered by natural gas or liquid propane, recent pow er management technology has allow ed homes to still receive w hole-house backup electricity, but w ith a smaller, more affordable generator than in years past. W ith an emergency kit on hand and the right backup pow er source available, the frustration of w eathering a storm can be greatly lessened. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) This is a good week to look at healing bruised feelings and re-establishing weakened relationships. It’s also a good week to start new projects and make new job-linked contacts. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Music and art dominate the week, giving the sensual Bovine a lot to appreciate. On the practical side, deal firmly, but fairly, with those who might try to undermine your work efforts. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Good feelings continue to flow from your recent efforts to reconnect with family and friends. But be ready to defuse a dispute before it can disrupt all that peace and harmony. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A practical view of a romanticized situation could help to clarify some of its more confusing aspects before you make a decision that could be tough to undo later on. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Pay more attention to what a recent spate of workplace criticism might say about your performance and not what you think it implies about you personally. Some flexibility might be called for. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) With new information, and new promises of support (not to mention growing selfconfidence), this could be a good time to restart a project you couldn’t quite handle before. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Before you decide to close down a problem-loaded project and make a fresh start with someone else, try once more to reach a compromise with your balky partner. He or she might surprise you. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) While you continue earning points for your sharp negotiating skills, be alert for an attempt to undercut your efforts. You’ll need to provide solid facts and figures to stay in the game. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A minor health problem might cause you to ease up on your usually busy schedule. But you’ll soon be back in the saddle and ready to pick up the reins and charge ahead. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) The adventurous Sea Goat might be eager to take on a new challenge. But before you do, you might want to take some time to check out previously overlooked factors. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A feeling of being overwhelmed by all that you have to do can be eased by setting priorities. Deal with the most urgent and time-sensitive situations first, and then work down the line. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Creating a calm, peaceful place for yourself in the middle of a roiling emotional whirlpool this week starts when you, and no one else, decide how to make decisions about your life. BORN THIS WEEK: Your determination to stick with your principles wins the admiration of everyone who knows you. (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

HELPFUL INSECTS

GENERAL CONTRACTING

Plants depend on insects to transfer pollen as they forage, and many insects are quite beneficial to have around. While some pollinate, others are predators of other pests. • Antlion: A foe of ants, they’ll help eat and control ant populations and pollinate flowers. They pose no threat to humans, either. • Big dipper firefly: These colorful insects feast on earthworms, slugs and snails during the larval stage. Fireflies add drama to evening gardens with their twinkling lights. • Garden spiders: Although some spiders can be venomous, many are quite handy to have around the garden. They’ll help control pest populations that can damage plants and crops. • Dragonflies: These arial artists that zip around the yard are consuming smaller insects that would otherwise pester plants and humans. • Blue-winged wasp: This wasp attacks the larvae of Japanese beetles, helping to control beetle populations. • Bees and butterflies: Butterflies and bees are some of the best pollinators out there, and each can add whimsy to gardens.

AVOID ACHES AND PAINS WHEN GARDENING People who have not spent much time in a garden may not consider this rewarding hobby much of a threat to their health. But as veteran gardeners can attest, gardening can contribute to nagging aches and pains that can force even the most ardent green-thumbers indoors. Gardening is a physical activity that, despite its peaceful nature, can be demanding on the body.

Paving stones are used around the house in many different applications, including on walkways and patios. Sometimes, however, paving stones are beyond homeowners’ budgets. Fortunately, there’s another alternative that may look just as attractive and save homeowners money. Stamped concrete, also called textured or imprinted concrete, is a design element that replicates the look of stone, brick, wood, slate, or other materials in concrete. Stamped concrete can be used for patios, sidewalks, driveways, and pool decks. Stamped concrete also may be incorporated into interior flooring designs. Homeowners can explore their options with regard to stamped concrete by speaking with a masonry expert or landscape architect. Page 42

BOOST ENERGY AT THE OFFICE Squeeze in a midday workout. Numerous studies have shown the many benefits to daily exercise, but professionals may not know that exercise can help improve their productivity at the office. A 2005 study from researchers at the then-named Leeds Metropolitan University in England asked 200 workers to answer questions regarding their productivity on days when they exercised at lunchtime and days when they did not exercise.
