CONSERVE FUEL DURING YOUR DAILY COMMUTE Commuting is a part of daily life for many working professionals. According to the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2011 American Community Survey, the average American spends 25 minutes commuting to work each day. However, Citi’s 2015 ThankYou Premier Commuter Index says the average commute time in the United States is 45 minutes. The reasons for that disparity are unknown, though if one accepts the latter statistic as more accurate than the yearsold Census Bureau data, it’s fair to say Americans spend far more time getting to work than their neighbors to the north. But commutes in Canada also can be lengthy, as Canada’s National Household Survey found that, in 2011, commuters in Canada spent an average of roughly 25 minutes traveling to work each day. While many people enjoy their daily commutes, feeling it’s a time to prepare for the day ahead and, if using public transportation, to relax and let someone else do the work, it’s fair to say the majority of commuters would like to spend less time getting to and from work. Many would also like to spend less money getting to and from their offices, and finding ways to conserve fuel is an effective way to do just that.

CORNED BEEF & CABBAGE FOR ST. PATTY’S DAY Corned beef and cabbage might not be a part of many people’s diet regimens throughout the year. But come March 17, it’s not uncommon to find people from all walks of life indulging in this beloved meal.
Corned Beef & Cabbage
March 17 marks the celebration of St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. Over the years, the day has also become a celebration of the Emerald Isle. Such celebrations tend to feature corned beef and cabbage, even though the dish may have little to do with Ireland (and even less to do with St. Patrick). The precise origins of the link between corned beef and St. Patrick’s Day remain a topic of debate, but some historians say the corned beef enjoyed today can be traced to New York City’s Irish immigrant population in the 19th and 20th centuries, who popularized a salted meat made from brisket that was then sold by Jewish butchers.

Reuben too!
Regardless of the authenticity of its link to Ireland, corned beef is delicious and many modern Paddy’s Day celebrants wouldn’t think of going without it on March 17.

The color green is everywhere come St. Patrick’s Day, but celebrants may be surprised to learn that blue is the color that was once most affiliated with St. Patrick himself. Numerous paintings depict St. Patrick wearing blue vestments. But green is the color now most instantly associated with Ireland, which is widely referred to as the “Emerald Isle.” Ireland’s lush countryside and rolling green hills attract millions of visitors each year. The color green can be found just about everywhere on St. Patrick’s Day, even if Patrick himself was partial to blue.

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Lettuce will last longer if you store it in the crisper drawer in a clean paper bag. * “Try using an empty glass wine bottle (remove the label) for rolling out pie crust or any dough. It is the best thing I’ve ever used ... nothing sticks to the glass, unlike my wooden rolling pin, which is now in the back of my cabinet for good after using it for decades!” -- L.F. in Texas * Peas, spinach, sweet potato, squash and carrots can be pureed and added to baked goods to increase fiber and nutrients. They are especially useful in soups to thicken a broth without adding fat. You can sneak some veggies into unexpected places, too -- like cookies, pancake batter and pasta dishes, or make a flavorful sandwich spread. * “When you get a new pair of running shoes, treat the insides with spray starch. We have always done this, and it keeps them fresher longer.” -- S.M. in Indiana * Tubes make it easy to access toothpaste when they are full, but it’s sometimes hard to get that last bit out. Here’s a tip from C.W. in Oregon: “To get the last bit of a tube of toothpaste to come out, run the tube under warm water for a few seconds. There’s more still in there than you think!” * It’s easy to sort hardware using a muffin pan. If you get a pan that has 12 depressions, you can line up nails and screws and such according to size, making it even more convenient.

BENEFITS OF HIRING PROFESSIONAL CONTRACTORS
Cold Weather Is Here!
The DIY movement has inspired many homeowners to tackle home repair and remodeling projects on their own. DIY projects can be rewarding, and many homeowners who have embraced the DIY movement have discovered talents they never before knew they had. But no matter how simple popular home renovation television shows make remodeling projects appear, homeowners should know that such undertakings are far more difficult than they appear on television. Homeowners who overestimate their abilities and the time they have to complete projects can cost themselves substantial amounts of money. In fact, there are a variety of reasons homeowners might want to work with professional contractors when tackling home improvement projects.

MASONRY & BASEMENT
Hiring a landscape architect may be a smart move for homeowners who are planning major overhauls of their properties. “The Operational Outlook Handbook” defines a landscape architect as “a person who designs parks, outdoor spaces of campuses, recreational facilities, private homes, and other open areas.” Landscape architects typically must be licensed and many hold degrees in landscape architecture from accredited schools. Architects who work on residential spaces often work with homeowners to design gardens, plantings, stormwater management, and pools. Landscape architects design spaces to do more than merely look good. Designs also are about functionality and meeting the needs of the homeowner. Outdoor spaces are designed after considering what the homeowner wants to experience and how homeowners want to use a given space. Landscape architects often do not plant and maintain these spaces. Rather, architects collaborate with other landscaping professionals to produce the final results.

STOCK UP ON HEALTHFUL FOOD (NAPSI) — During these challenging times, people are avoiding the supermarket and, instead, stocking up on shelf-stable and frozen foods. Unfortunately, these can often be loaded with preservatives and lack nutrition. Many families also resort to take-out foods that can be high in sodium, hydrogenated fats and refined sugars. “The best solution is to find healthy, prepared products that can be purchased in bulk at the supermarket, online and delivered to your doorstep,” advises consumer trends expert Merilee Kern. One of Kern’s personal favorites is Veggies Made Great, which offers easy, familyfriendly and delicious veggie-rich meals and snacks such as muffins, frittatas and veggie cakes. They can fill freezers and keep families healthy—even during stressful times. Vegetables including carrots, zucchini and kale are the first and primary ingredients in any Veggies Made Great item, and all are free of gluten, soy, peanuts and dairy. Available in the freezer section, each is individually wrapped and can be quickly and easily heated in the oven or microwave. It’s an easy and tasty way to have veggiedriven nutrition on the menu every day.
PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Surrendering a Pet DEAR PAW’S CORNER: When my grandmother passed away last fall, she left behind two beautiful cats. No one else in the family wanted to take care of them, so I took them in. However, I’m financially unable to care for them long-term, and the apartment complex I live in does not allow pets. I’m on borrowed time (and money) at this point, and praying that my apartment manager doesn’t find out about the cats. I contacted a shelter nearby to find out if they will accept the cats. They said there is a “surrender fee” of $200. No way can I pay that; I’m on a fixed income. What alternatives do I have? -- Sherrie R., via email DEAR SHERRIE: I’m sorry to hear about your predicament. You have extended your home and finances to care for two cats in need, and I salute you for it. But you’re right: the current situation is not ideal for you or the cats. When preparing to surrender a pet, the receiving shelter will request that you try every possible option first. Many shelters will provide advice and limited assistance for pet owners going through this. One option would be for you to contact family members and friends directly (not on public social media posts) to ask if they would be able to adopt the cats. If a surrender to the shelter is the last resort, contact your family to see if they can chip in for the surrender fees. After all, you’ve already taken on the cost of food, supplies and maybe medical care for them. You’ve taken on the risk of losing your lease, too. Speak calmly with your relatives about sharing the cost. Best of luck. Send your tips, questions or comments to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

Churchville-Chili’s Churchville Elementary & Chestnut Ridge Schools Go All In for 2022 Kid’s Heart Challenge BY AMANDA PULEO
C
hurchville-Chili elementary school students once again took the American Heart Association’s (AHA) Kids Heart Challenge: learning how to develop hearthealthy habits. The challenge is a longstanding tradition for students at both Churchville Elementary School (CES) and Chestnut Ridge Elementary School (CRS). This year, each school celebrated a bit differently, but everyone had a great time. Thanks to the incredible generosity of the Churchville community, both schools raised impressive donations for the AHA that will benefit local friends and neighbors.
• At Churchville Elementary, students school-wide participated in special activities in physical education classes. A remarkable 158 students volunteered to fundraise for the AHA, and they surpassed the school’s $10,000 goal with a grand total of $25,420.98 – the school’s highest total in their 21 years of participation. • As Chestnut Ridge carefully launched its first Kids Heart Challenge since the pandemic began, activities were limited to grades 2-4. The gym was transformed for two weeks into the Kids Heart Challenge Fitness Center with a variety of special equipment. Students were offered “Challenge by Choice,” a concept that gave them full ownership of their own workout plans. They planned balanced workouts by focusing on the four components of health-related fitness: cardiovascular endurance, muscle endurance, muscle strength and flexibility. Students enjoyed the activities and by the end of the challenge, they had raised over $10,000 for the AHA. Chestnut Ridge School, like CES, has also taken part in the AHA campaign for over 20 years. In 2012, the school was the top fundraiser in the nation. This year’s campaign was managed by longtime organizers PE teachers Greg Kincaid and Brooke Elnicky. Elnicky said, “Kids Heart Challenge is a great service learning program. It teaches students that being active and having good habits can be fun and keep them healthy. They learn that they can help save lives in their own community by raising money to support research, education and services used by peers and local families.” Students at Churchville Elementary had an extra treat - a special assembly on Feb. 15 - to recognize their success. The school’s two honorary Heart Heroes, students Aubrey and Ellianna, were acknowledged: The two had inspired classmates with their personal stories of coping with difficult heart problems. AHA representative William Mitchell was on hand to thank students

for their efforts and hard work. Top fundraisers were also named, each collecting more than $1,000 for the cause: Madelyn will enjoy being Assistant Principal for the Day, while Principal David Johnson will cede his title (and office desk) twice, to first-place winner Emma and second-place campaigner Evelyn – Principals for the Day. The highlight of the assembly was the choosing of five students who lined up with whipped cream pies and happily pushed them into the faces of PE teachers and program coordinators Bethany Matsko and Chester Palozzi along with teacher Kristina Zito, Assistant Principal Kim Giancursio and of course, Principal Johnson.
Johnson said, “It’s wonderful to see our students take part in all the heart-healthy races and exercises and learn about citizenship and making a difference. But it’s astounding to see how seriously they take this opportunity to help others, and it is truly inspiring to see how our families support their efforts.” More than 3,000 schools nationwide participate in the Kids Heart Challenge programs. The events are fun, promote sports and fitness, educate students in the risks of heart disease and stroke, and help lay the groundwork for life-long community activism and volunteering. Both Churchville Elementary and Chestnut Ridge schools have participated for many years and consistently place in the top echelon of the state’s fundraising schools.

ENJOY IRISH COFFEE THIS ST. PATRICK’S DAY
Scottsville Hollow Apartments
St. Patrick’s Day is synonymous with many things, most notably the jovial atmosphere of the various events celebrating both the life of St. Patrick and Irish culture. New York City’s St. Patrick’s Day celebrations are known for the Big Apple’s impressive parade up Fifth Avenue, while few who have partaken of Patty’s Day festivities in Chicago can forget the green Chicago River. Celebrations may vary from city to city, but it’s a good bet that celebrants will hear some traditional Irish music, enjoy a pint of Guinness and/or join the masses wearing green wherever they end up this St. Patrick’s Day. Drinking Irish coffee is another St. Patrick’s Day tradition many revelers enjoy. Few may indulge in Irish coffee throughout the year, but this special concoction can be a great way to warm up after attending a St. Patrick’s Day parade in the often chilly March temperatures. Cocktails made with coffee date back quite far, but Irish coffee does not have to go back too far to trace its history. In the mid-20th century, chef Joe Sheridan was working in Foynes, County Limerick when a group of United States-bound travelers found themselves stranded due to inclement weather that grounded their plane. Whether he was trying to warm them up or wake them up after their ordeal, Sheridan served the passengers coffee with a little bit of Irish whiskey mixed in. When the group inquired as to what they were drinking, Sheridan reportedly told them, “that’s Irish coffee.”

The precise etymology of the word “leprechaun” is unknown, though many scholars believe the word we use today is derived from the old Irish “Lú Chorpain,” which means “small body.” Some scholars point to the 8th century word “luchorpán,” meaning “sprite” or “pygmy,” as the origins of the word leprechaun. Another word, “lubrican,” which first appeared in the English language in a 1604 play written by Thomas Middleton and Thomas Dekker, also has been linked to the modern word leprechaun.

ST. PATRICK’S DAY FUN FOR YOUNGSTERS Many families decorate their homes for St. Patrick’s Day. While such decorations are rarely as extensive as Christmas decorations, parents can encourage their kids’ creative sides by organizing crafts projects for youngsters and their friends. Design projects where kids can create some of the symbols of St. Patrick’s Day that appear in popular culture, such as four-leaf clovers or leprechauns.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Late Relapse Possible in Breast Cancer Patients ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: I just read another sad story about a woman who had breast cancer, fought it and seemed to win, but after five years, it came back and took her life. The same sequence of events happened to my wife two years ago. She fought the second round of cancer for a year and a half, but it was just about everywhere. What is this connection between the initial breast cancer occurrence and it coming back five or six years later even more widespread throughout the body? Is screening stepped up during that period? -- Anon. ANSWER: I am very sorry to hear about your wife. With most cancers, no evidence of disease five years out from diagnosis usually means a cure, that the person will not have a recurrence of that particular cancer, although people who’ve had one cancer are at a higher risk of developing a second, unrelated cancer. Breast cancer is one of the exceptions. Late recurrences (after five years) are possible, even very late recurrences. I have seen 20 years afterward, and there are reports of even longer. Although the reasons why breast cancer seems to hide for many years are not known precisely, we do know some risk factors for recurrence: Larger tumors are more likely to recur. Those with positive lymph nodes are at high risk, and women with estrogen receptor positive, progesterone receptor positive and HER2 negative tumors are more likely to experience recurrence. Screening is absolutely appropriate in women who have had breast cancer. There is not a consensus about the type and frequency of screening, but many experts choose yearly mammography. Breast MRI has been considered, but it has not been proven to be better in women with a history of breast cancer. A healthy lifestyle, including regular exercise, a diet with plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, abstinence from smoking and minimal alcohol intake, has been shown to reduce cancer risk in women with a history of breast cancer. ***

TALKING OF TONGUES A pink, healthy tongue is a vital part of oral health. Neglect or lack of proper care of this essential organ can lead to the harboring of destructive bacteria that adversely affects overall dental health. Regular dental examinations include evaluations to appraise the tongue’s color and texture since these factors are vital to oral health. Discoloration of the tongue, any color other than pink, or changes in the normal, smooth texture, could indicate a number of oral or other underlying health issues that need to be addressed. The human tongue is actually a muscle, essential to numerous bodily functions like speaking, breathing, and eating. It is susceptible to a multitude of diseases including tongue cancer.
so we can establish a baseline against which we can measure your future oral profile and progress. And whether we’re dealing with tongues or teeth, regular professional checkups make it possible to watch for developing concerns and address them while they are still small, before they can turn into something more serious. For an appointment for advanced, gentle dental care, please call us at 585.343.4246, 6 Batavia City Centre. P. S. The tongue is a complicated part of the human body, requiring over 8,000 various motor signals to help it move.

RECOGNIZE AND AVOID YOUTH SPORTS INJURIES Repetitive use activities: Swimmers, tennis players, pitchers, and quarterbacks may experience something called a repetitive use injury. This is pain in an area of the body that is used over and over again. Inflammation of muscles and tendons may appear, but repetitive use injuries also may result in stress fractures, which the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases defines as hairline fractures in bones that are subjected to repeated stress. Rest between exercises can help alleviate these types of injuries. Ice, compression, elevation and immobilization may be used if pain is persistent.

www.salmonorthodontics.com THREE WAYS TO RELIEVE ARTHRITIS PAIN by Dr. Bob Arnot
! " # $ % & '( ( ! %
(NAPSI) — Over the course of my career as a physician, chief medical correspondent and war correspondent, I’ve been exposed to a wide variety of pain management drugs and approaches. One thing I’ve seen is that the United States is much more reliant on taking pills for pain than the rest of the world, where topical analgesics, physical therapy and other approaches are more widely used. A problem with pills is that many of them come with side effects that can be severe, especially if the medications are used in greater quantities or for longer than they’re supposed to be. That’s one reason for back, muscle and joint pains, I believe it’s best to start with topicals. What’s more, the Centers for Disease Control, the American College of Rheumatology and other medical experts agree it’s a safer approach. Fortunately, if you are an arthritis sufferer and want effective relief, there are two topicals that are FDA approved the same way Ibuprofen, Naproxen Sodium and other prescription pain medicines have been through the demanding new drug application process. While both help relieve arthritis pain, it is important to know the differences between Salonpas Pain Relief Patch Large and Voltaren Arthritis Pain gel. Salonpas Pain Relief Patch Large was the 1st topical approved by the FDA and provides relief for up to 12 hours. It begins to work in one hour and can provide clinically meaningful pain relief in the first day. Since it is a patch, the medicine is pre-measured and easy to apply. Not only does this patch help relieve arthritis pain, but it also works for back, muscle and joint pain as well. On the other hand, Voltaren Arthritis Pain gel is not labeled for immediate relief and may take up to 7 days to help achieve relief. To apply this gel, you must first measure out an amount based on a dosing card. Voltaren is effective for up to 6 hours and should only be used for arthritis pain. In addition to topical relief, joint and muscle pain can be treated with physical therapy. It can keep stiff joints from getting stiffer, reduce strain on joints during daily activities and help you get back to normal life without pain or difficulty. Also helpful are hot and cold compresses. Heat is good for joint stiffness and cold compresses can ease joint pain. Just remember, don’t apply heat to a joint that’s already hot. If you feel a burning sensation in your joint, cool it with the cold compresses. Dr. Arnot is board certified in internal medicine and an award-winning journalist, author of twelve books on nutrition and health and host of the Dr. Danger reality TV series. S E V RA Above & Beyond While my husband and I were at Maple Tree Inn this past weekend, we happened to witness a business that went above and beyond for a customer who was in great distress. They didn’t have to do what they did, and most businesses wouldn’t have. It was very heartwarming to see, and I for one applaud them. A great example of customer service and compassion. My Fair Lady Cheers to the Rochester Broadway Theatre League for bringing to Rochester the musical “My Fair Lady.” What a wonderful show it was, and I liked it even better than the original movie! It was that good! March Madness What a wonderful time of year it is for all of us hoop fans - it’s March Madness! Shout Out! Shout out to all of the fire, EMT, and other emergency responders for their hard work during the wind storm on Sunday. You are appreciated!
No Denying I’m confused regarding this back and forth about global warming. Who’s denying it? We all know it’s changing. The only question is how much does man really impact these changes? Sure, there’s a lot we can do to lessen our impact, but the changes of warming and cooling have been proven over and over again to be a part of our planet’s history. So, who’s denying it? Local Dog Walker It is great that you pick up after your dog when you walk our local neighborhood. However, it would be really great if you also took that little black bag back home with you! Today while walking, one of the people in the neighborhood put your 10 bags (yes 10 bags), in the middle of the sidewalk and this from just a short distance of a walk for most of us. We are all looking for you, and when we find you, the local police and dog warden will also know you. Why is it so hard to take the bag back home with you like a responsible person? The people’s lawns that you leave the little packages on are really tired of them. There is a law, you know, and you are not above it. We know it is from one person, and everyone is on the look out for you. Clean up and take your bags home. This is also your neighborhood, but you are not a good neighbor, that is for sure. Choices In response to Choose One: No, we should use either paper or plastic, metal or glass wherever appropriate. Paper bags, plastic cars? Yes, I hate to see a tree come down, but trees (and wood and paper) are renewable resources; oil is not. Paper is biodegradable; plastic is not. It’s that simple. We should choose the ones that are least damaging to the environment case by case.

STRATEGIES TO DISCONNECT MORE OFTEN Turn off your notifications. According to research from the Business of Apps, the average smartphone user in the United States receives 46 app push notifications each day. The sound of a smartphone notification has become as recognizable as any sound, and the volume of notifications the average users receive in a 24-hour period no doubt contributes heavily to how much time they spend on their phones. Turning off notifications makes it easier to disconnect from devices, and may even make individuals more productive.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles
Before You Sign Up for Senior Discounts We all want to save a dollar every place we can. Discounts aimed at seniors are a good way to get our attention, but now and then it’s just not a good idea to sign up. For example, if you’re low income, Amazon Prime offers a reduced-price membership. With Prime you get free shipping, access to movies and music, and more. Your membership is only $5.95 per month -- after you furnish an image of your Social Security, Medicaid (not Medicare), TANF or SNAP card. You’ll need to renew this every year to keep getting the discount to ensure you’re still on the program. You can stay on this reduced rate for four years. The dilemma is that you’re providing your personal information -- Medicaid number, Social Security number and so on -- to people you don’t know. Where does that information end up? If you cancel your membership, is that information destroyed? Reduced prescription costs are available at certain drugstore chains, but generally on a limited basis, perhaps one day per month. One chain will offer to let you link a new account with them to your existing AARP membership. With another one, should you prefer not to give them your email address, they’re more than happy to take your name and phone number instead. A number of phone companies have reduced plans for seniors. But they do verify your age. With two of them you need to go into the store with a valid ID. With another they’ll use the information they already have on file from when you started your original service with them. How
securely have they kept that information? Before you snap up a senior discount deal, consider what you need to give up to get that discount. Think about whether the information you give can be used for identity theft. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

D id You Know ? If you have psoriasis, an autoimmune skin condition marked by red, flaky patches on the body, you also could be at risk for a certain type of arthritis. Psoriatic arthritis, w hich causes stiffness, sw elling and pain in and around the joints, affects up to 30 percent of people w ith psoriasis, says the National Psoriasis Foundation. W hile psoriatic arthritis can develop at any time, it is most common in people betw een the ages of 30 and 50. This type of arthritis can develop slow ly or come on quickly and be severe. Just like psoriasis itself, psoriatic arthritis tends to go through periods of flare-up and remission. Typically, the skin condition precedes the joint disease in 85 percent of patients. Keep in mind that a severe case of psoriasis w ill not necessarly translate into a severe case of arthritis. Psoriatic arthritis may be treated like other forms of arthritis. Doctors may prescribe anti-inflammatory drugs, antirheumatic drugs, exercise, and complementary therapies. Those w ho have psoriasis and have begun to experience joint pain and stiffness should talk to a doctor about potential therapies.

WHY DOES THE WORLD CELEBRATE ST. PATRICK’S DAY? March 17 is a special day for people of Irish heritage and other celebrants across the globe. Each year, millions of people pay homage to St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, with parades, parties and religious services. Celebrations occur even though many celebrants may know little about this legendary saint. Although St. Patrick’s Day has evolved into a festivity filled with clovers, frosty mugs of beer, green clothing, and lively music, the day was once a religious feast day honoring the man many credit with bringing Christianity to Ireland. St. Patrick was born in Britain circa AD 387. Many are surprised to learn he was not Irish. In fact, St. Patrick first spent time in Ireland when he was captured by Irish pagans as a teen and taken to their country as a slave. After six years working as a shepherd, Patrick became familiar with the customs and spirit of the Irish and “found God.” He was able to eventually escape his imprisonment, vowing to one day return to Ireland as a free man. Patrick was schooled at monasteries and was ordained a priest and later became a bishop. Under Pope Celestine I, he was commissioned to become an apostle to Ireland and spread the news of God and Christianity. St. Patrick spent many years evangelizing in the northern half of Ireland and converted thousands of people from paganism to Christianity. According to legend, St. Patrick used the three-leaf clover to explain the Holy Trinity to the Irish. Patrick’s efforts to drive out the pagans became an allegory in which he drove “snakes” out of Ireland. Although green has become the primary color of St. Patrick’s Day celebrations, and green remains widely associated with Ireland, during the 18th century, the Order of St. Patrick, an Anglo-Irish chivalric order, adopted blue as it’s official color. That led to blue being associated with St. Patrick. However, “wearing of the green” eventually fell back into favor, and the color green and an association with St. Patrick’s Day grew during the 19th and 20th centuries. Although St. Patrick’s Day originated as a religious celebration in honor of a man who brought Christianity to Ireland, it has since become a larger representation of Irish pride and culture. Page 27

Some say the United States should not send troops into the Russia-Ukraine conflict because allegedly Ukraine is of strategic importance to the United States, many Americans do not want a war, and the danger of a superpower confrontation. Considering the fragile state of Ukraine and in light of the already senseless loss of life with further atrocities expected from the Russian military, should the United States become involved militarily to defend Ukraine?

COPING WITH THE LOSS OF A LOVED ONE Reach out to others. Grief often can turn a person inward, and your feelings may be bottled up. Talking about your emotions, whether it’s with a trusted friend or even a therapist, may help. Online message boards that cover grief and loss may provide the support you need. Leaning on others who have been in your shoes may help you recover more quickly.

Tips on planning a memorial service • Set the date and time. Memorial services should be planned in consideration of any family members who have traveled from out of town. Set a date close enough to the funeral or anniversary event that visiting friends and family can attend. •␣Choose a location. Arrange a memorial service at a location that is large enough to accommodate the number of people you’ve invited. Know how many chairs you need, tables for food and arrangements and a podium for a guestbook. •␣Compile a guest list and send out the invitations. Stay organized when planning a memorial service by making a list of all friends and loved ones of the deceased for sending out invitations. •␣Personalize decorations and music. Make the memorial service a reflection of the person whose memory you’re honoring by choosing decorations and music the individual would have liked. Use floral arrangements with the person’s favorite flowers or colors and compile a play list of favorite songs or types of music to be played throughout the service. •␣Get input from loved ones. Ask friends and family members of the deceased individual for input about special touches that will best help remember their loved one. •␣Arrange for guest speakers. A key component of many memorial services is having a series of guest speakers who can provide their personal perspective on the deceased person’s life and the legacy being left behind.

When visiting a grocery store without a shopping list, shoppers are bound to forget items, necessitating follow-up visits to the store, and waste time wondering what they need. THE RIGHT WAY TO UPDATE A RÉSUMÉ Embrace keywords. Many employers now use application tracking software to sift through the scores of résumés that are submitted for each opening they post. Keywords make it easy for employers to sort through thousands of résumés. The right keywords will flag your résumé and increase your “relevancy score” in the main HR/recruiting software programs available. Adapt your résumé for each application you submit. Use some of the words listed in the initial job posting and description. In addition, look at similar job postings and incorporate some keywords listed in those ads so that you have all the bases covered.

GET A HANDLE ON WORK-RELATED STRESS Take more time off. According to the “State of American Vacation 2016” report from Project: Time Off, American workers failed to use 658 million vacation days in 2015. Vacation is not just a time to get away, but a valuable, effective way for workers to recharge. The APA notes that avoiding the negative effects of chronic stress and burnout requires workers to take time away to replenish and return to their pre-stress level of functioning. Taking time off to disconnect from work and avoid thinking about work can be just what workers need to overcome their work-related stress. And plenty of workers have the time to take off; they just need to take it.
Pay is $17.00/hour to start. Part-Time Associates have the benefit of flexible scheduling, with options to work either days or evenings, 401k plan and paid birthday off. To apply: http://www.anderson-dubose.com or http://www.a-d.us
